The Mariners partied like it was 2025 last night.

On today's show, we got some injury news to talk about,
specifically with Brennan Donovan and Colt Emerson.
But first, we start with a, frankly, stunning 9-2 win for the Marriers
over the red-hot Phillies last night,
snapping Philadelphia's nine-game winning streak.
And, I mean, over the course of this entire season,
we have seen this Marrers' offense get dominated consistently by Joe Ramos.
random with like a four and a half five plus ERA.
But then Zach Wheeler,
one of the best starting pitchers in all of baseball comes to town.
And it's light work for these guys.
Eight earn runs on nine hits and five walks.
They crush four home runs against Wheeler in his four innings of work.
Nine hard hit balls in total.
Julio Rodriguez with a three run blast to kick things off.
Cal Raleigh with two of his three home runs on the night off of Wheeler.
Cole Young, who's been struggling mightily, gets a home run as well off of Wheeler,
a little bit of a wall scraper, but it all counts the same.
There for Cole Young.
They smoke this, dude.
And like, what?
Where did that come from?
I mean, like, this is something that the 2025 Mariners did a lot against some of the best
pitchers and all of baseball.
But the 2026 Mariners, that, yeah, we haven't really seen that from them.
So it was nice to see a little bit of a throwback to 2025.
Obviously, Cal stealing the headlines, of course, naturally and deservedly so with what he did last night.
But overall, that was a very 2025 win for the Seattle Mariners.
It was, one that is not too dissimilar from when they had earlier in the week, or I guess early last week, where a day after being dismantled by a superior, you know, or NL Central team, the Mariners bounced back the next day, scored early, really took it to a team that we would say, is I think all agree, is far more talented and then just better and certainly playing better than the Mariners.
And they came back and they, you know, whooped them.
And so I, you know, as for whether or not that matters, like the ability to bounce back after bad losses.
Maybe, maybe not.
But we've seen them do it three times now.
Now, two of them were blowouts.
The other one was a, you know, a blown lead and extras against the Astros.
And they came back the next day and they won.
So the Mariners, really, if you've been looking for it, you've been willing to accept that this is a possibility,
they've been playing pretty good ball for the last 10 days or so,
two weeks, even against the raise.
Again, this couldn't get really anything to fall,
but they played okay at Yankee Stadium.
Probably should have won two out of three there,
if not for, you know, Bryce Miller.
They played okay, and obviously they won the series in Houston
probably should have been a sweep.
They really, you know, played okay in Milwaukee,
minus the one game.
It just George didn't give them any chance to win the rubber match there.
and then obviously they just took a series from the Cubs with a blowout in there.
And now they're in decent position to take a series from the Phillies after winning last night.
So again, if you're willing to look and you're not and you're willing to just like understand that blowout losses don't count any worse for you than just a regular two to one loss,
then the Mariners have actually played pretty good ball against really good teams.
We talked about this being a part of the schedule.
they just have to kind of try and survive.
And well, right now they're doing that and doing it a little bit better at a time where the Astros are slumping as well.
So, yeah, the Mariners ability to bounce back after difficult wins or difficult losses, I should say,
which we have not seen at the beginning for most of this year.
We are seeing now.
And they have done a very nice job of bouncing back from either embarrassing losses or like just, oh, man,
I can't believe we let that game get away from us.
type of losses and they're doing it with
some offense early, which is really nice to see.
So yeah, obviously, you know, this team,
we've talked about it all year.
This team is going to go as far as Cal Raleigh and
Julio Rodriguez can take them.
Big night for both of those guys last night,
particularly Cal.
And you just see the impact of those two guys when they're
damaging the baseball.
It's a completely different team.
So, yeah, it was a really fun win.
Great to see.
And again, it is a continuation of what we've seen over the last 10 days to, you know, two weeks.
If you've been looking and if you've been paying attention, you've seen that the Mariners are actually starting to play some pretty good ball against the best teams, like the hardest stretch of their schedule.
Now they're starting to play pretty good baseball.
If they had played like this, like they played the last 10 days over the course of the entire season, they'd be eight games up in the division, nine games up in the division.
So again, frustrating as it has been, and they still have quite a mountain to climb to make the playoffs.
They are playing good ball.
They need to continue to do it.
That easy part of their schedule is not really all that close to coming up yet.
But they are playing acceptable ball.
They're hitting a little bit.
They're pitching a little bit.
And again, yes, there have been mental mistakes.
Yes, there have been two blowout losses.
But those count all the same as if they had lost five to four.
So ultimately, the Mariners are playing pretty solid baseball.
as of late.
This is far from the Mariners
only big win of the season,
only impressive win of the season.
But when they've had these kinds of wins,
we've gotten on this show and we've talked about,
like, is this the turning point?
This has to be the turning point.
If this isn't going to be the turning point,
nothing will be and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
So on and so forth, right?
So here we are again, another big win for the Mariners.
And what does it mean?
I don't know.
What's important here is,
that last night, I had fun
to learn the parents play baseball,
which is something that I haven't been able to say a lot
about this team over the course of this season.
And that's what matters the most to me at this point now.
Just give me something to feel good about.
Give me something that I want to watch.
And like you said,
the quality of the product has been significantly better.
This has been, to me, the best stretch of baseball
the mayor has played all season.
long and that includes when they went on that like seven game win streak or whatever early on in
the year yeah they're just they're playing better fundamental baseball their offense looks a lot more
competent the one issue has been the pitching the pitching has been wildly inconsistent and just
straight up garbage at times over the stretch but overall like even with the 22 to nothing loss
and the 19 to 2 loss mixed in there this stretch has been more often
of the not enjoyable to watch.
We've seen good playoff atmosphere at the ballpark for the last, you know,
handful of games.
And it really is a good reminder of that, like,
this ballpark gets rocking, you know, you start playing well all of a sudden.
It might only take 80 wins to win this division,
81 wins to win this division.
And you get into the playoffs and anything can happen.
And if Cowell Raleigh is going to get hot and if Cowell's looked really good on this
homestand and the at-bats have slowly been getting better,
if Julio can get hot,
if you can stop punting these games because, you know,
Bryce and George have no idea what they're doing out there.
Things can get really interesting, really fast.
And again, they're playing really good teams.
This is the part of the schedule we've had circle since the schedule was released last year.
We looked at and we're like, man, this stretch right here is brutal.
And they're managing it.
They're surviving it.
They just clinched a winning or at least a 500 home stand against two of the, what,
top three or four teams in the national league,
therefore in baseball probably.
So, you know,
and they still have a decent shot. They get Nola tonight.
We'll see what they can do against him.
They get Lazzardo.
So, I mean, they're not facing Sanchez or anybody like that.
So they have a shot to win another series,
and it would be a pretty impressive series.
And then they go on the road to play what is essentially a playoff series
against the Blue Jays.
You're both kind of battling for that last playoff spot.
you got a tough one against the Red Sox who are, you know,
in the hottest team of baseball for, what, two months now?
And after that, though, you can just kind of manage that and stay kind of where you are.
It's a lot of the Angels.
It's a lot of the A's.
It's a lot of the Rockies.
Like, you do have an opportunity.
If they play like they're playing now in the month of September,
they're going to have a great record in September.
And that will give them a shot.
So we'll have to see again.
This team doesn't really get the,
the benefit of the doubt and like, oh, yep, that's the switch.
They flipped it.
Now they're just, no, no, no, no, no.
This team had five months to earn that, that, you know, benefit of the doubt.
And they didn't.
And in fact, every time we've given it to them, they've screwed us.
So they don't get that.
But this team really is playing better baseball.
The very least it's fun baseball.
It's entertaining.
They're not rolling over.
I mean, we've seen them a couple times, really fight through like early adversity,
which is not something they did from, you know, March to,
July, you know, to the end of July. And we've seen them kind of, you know, punch back and
battle back and claw back. And they're doing it against really quality opponents. So, again,
cautiously optimistic that this thing can still turn the way that you wanted to. But obviously,
you know, they dug themselves such a big hole. We'll see if they can get out of it. But at the end of
the day, they're playing much better baseball over the last 10 days. And not surprisingly,
it's been a pretty good last 10 days for Cal Rale. So I think that's probably correlated.
let's talk more about cow rolly and there was also a relief appearance in this game that caught
my eye that I want to talk about as well we'll go over that in just a moment but first a reminder

So since the start of the last road trip in New York, Cal Raleigh is slashing 211, 388, 605.
That is a 181 WRC plus. Now, last night's game is admittedly carrying a lot of that.
So if you remove that game, he's hitting like a buck 43 and it's like a 104 WRC plus.
he's been walking a lot over the last 22%.
Yeah, 22%.
So he's been walking a lot since the start of the last road trip.
But still, it's been better from Cal.
Still hasn't been great.
Still hasn't been where you wanted to be.
I mean, last night, it was absolutely where you wanted to be and then some.
But aside from last night's game, still not exactly there, but better from Cal,
actually productive from Cal.
he's finding ways to contribute at the plate.
And that's really all you can ask for at this point from Cal because the alternative is, well, it's a loss year for him.
The thing that impressed me the most last night or the thing that just like stood out to me the most last night was that he was able to catch up to the fastball.
First home run of the game is that fastball at the top of the zone that we've seen him try to get to that he's chased after.
a lot. And even
when it's been in the strike zone, he has
swung through so many times
over the course of this year. Not last night.
Gets that pitch,
destroys it.
And then his other two home runs
come off of cutters.
You know,
it wasn't like hanging right in the center of the plate
from Zach Wheeler, the other one from
Sugar is at the bottom of the zone.
It doesn't matter though.
How many times have we seen Cal Raleigh
get that pitch and miss it?
over the course of 2026.
The fact that he got to those pitches consistently
and three of his four plate appearances
and he walks on the other one,
that is potentially a big development here for Cal.
You got to stack it for quite a bit longer
when you had the year that Cal's had
before anybody's going to buy into it.
But the two things since the start of that last road trip
that's staying out to me is,
the strikeout rate down to 22%
that is massive.
And the other thing, his
zone contact percentage,
85% in that span.
So he is swinging and missing
at fewer pitches inside the strike zone,
which as we know is an absolute killer for him.
And he's not only is he,
you know,
making contact with those pitches, he's also chasing a little bit less.
He's drawing the walks.
He's starting to lay off of that fastball.
that's like at his eyes, which he just cannot hit.
Nobody can.
But he's starting to lay off.
He's still not perfect.
He'll still chase up there on occasion.
But it just feels like things are starting to trend in the right direction for him.
And that would be huge because obviously if you get anywhere close to 2026 or 2025 Cal for the rest of the season, it's a complete game changer.
It really is because he is that good when he is locked in.
So, you know, are we going to see that?
I don't know.
We've seen it for one night.
We've seen 20, 23, 2024, Cal for probably the last two weeks.
And if that's what you get for the rest of the year, that's also a game changer.
That's just how low down the totem pole, how Raleigh was, you know, prior to last night.
And so, again, it's one game.
We don't want to freak out over one game.
But there are numbers, there are eye tests that show us that over the last two weeks or so,
Cal's put himself in a position to get back to a, you know,
all-star catcher, you know, caliber type of guy who could hit 30 home runs,
35 home runs, maybe not 60, but could he hit 35?
I mean, no, because the year's almost over, but like,
can he be on a 35, 40 home run pace for the rest of the year?
Yeah, I think he probably can be.
And we'll see again.
He has to stack these type of performances back to back to back to back before
anybody's going to buy in.
Doesn't have to hit three home runs every night.
but could be fun.
I love to see him try.
Could be fun.
But yeah, I think Cal is in a better place right now than he has been at any point this year.
Could that all evaporate over the next two games?
Yep, sure could because Cal Raleigh has been consistently terrible all year.
So you can't 100% say he's back or anything like that.
And honestly, there's probably not going to be a point this season where we're going to be like,
yep, he's back.
Like this is Cal Raleigh as we've expected it.
But if he is not a black hole in that lineup and if he can provide some thump and he can go back to, you know, dictating how lineups attack or how pitching staffs attack this entire lineup because they have to worry about where Cal is in it.
That would be massive.
So we'll see what happens.
But last night, obviously, it's best game of the year.
And a, you know, a reminder, I think to a lot of people that Cal Rale is a really good baseball player having a really good.
difficult year.
So hopefully last night was a launching point, but we shall see.
It's much like the Mariners themselves, it's going to take a lot more games like that
for me to trust them, that they're back or that they've flipped the switch or anything
like that.
But it doesn't mean it's not fun to watch and that it wasn't something that we, and I think
Cal more importantly, really needed to have happened for them.
So before we wrap up on last night, sir, or as we wrap
up last night's game.
Sir Anthony Dominguez, I thought, had his best outing as a mariner.
I saw him use the splitter quite a bit.
Throw seven splitters last night.
Second most used pitch on the night.
Only got one whiff on that pitch, but I thought it looked really good.
He also filled up the strike zone with fastball.
Seven called strikes plus whiffs on the night with the four samer.
It's not Dominguez looked really good
And he was able to cover two innings last night
Which is also huge for this bullpen that
Been used a lot over the course of this homestead
Especially yesterday
Or two days ago
I mean
Yeah, I'd like to see Dominguez throw that splitter a lot more
It's funny when you look at it
He's foreseeing sweeper sinker like significantly more
Than the split
But when you look at the batted ball data
And you look at the expected number
and all that on the splitter.
It's been his best pitch over the last two years.
Super high whiff on it.
Opponents hitting under 200.
There's no slug.
It is a lethal, lethal weapon.
He just doesn't use it that often.
So, you know, and obviously, you know,
splitter's kind of a feel pitch.
And there's also some concerns with like blisters and stuff like that
when you throw the split.
And there are even some concerns about the strain it puts on your elbow to throw the
split.
And so, again, it's tough for you to be a fastball splitter.
if you just don't really have conviction with that pitch.
But statistically speaking, Dominguez and splitter is his best pitch,
and he barely uses it.
But what we saw last night was a good splitter,
but a guy who just attacked.
And he was in the zone.
You don't have to be too fine with the stuff that Dominguez has.
You just need to throw strikes.
But he was also, you know, on the corners last night.
He wasn't just piping it down the middle and saying, here it is.
He was, you know, working the corners a little bit.
Again, not super fine.
he doesn't have to have, you know, 80 grade command with his stuff.
But if he can have 50 command and he can just kind of put it near within an inch or two
where he wants it to go, he's one of the filthier relievers in baseball.
Like that is a possibility for him.
That is an outcome every time he takes the mound.
It's just, unfortunately, another outcome is that he can't throw a strike and then
he pipes a fastball right down the middle, trying to get back into a count.
And all of a sudden, it's a three-run homer and you're screwed.
So there is a wide variance here.
but Dominguez, I think for the most part,
he's looked pretty good since that first outing.
And who was that against Detroit?
I think he's looked pretty good since there.
Again, it's just he's not,
he's a solid middle guy who, you know,
you can go to if you need a big strike.
Like if contact absolutely kills you,
this is probably the guy he should go to because, yeah,
he might walk in the tie and run,
but he's also more than likely going to get the strike.
or well, he's more likely going to get a strikeout than anybody else in your bullpen,
except for maybe Munoz, but we're not having that conversation again,
because God forbid you use your best guy before the ninth inning.
What if we have the lead in the ninth?
Oh, man, then what would we do?
Anyways, so, yeah, Dominguez looked really good last night.
And again, I really think they should throw the splitter more.
And it does feel to me, I don't have the numbers to back this up,
but it does feel to me like he's used the splitter a lot more since coming to Seattle.
And I just wonder if that's the adjustment they want to make.
like is this the guy that is do you want to pay any middle reliever guy 11 million dollars no no you really
don't uh but this is a guy who could potentially be leverage he has been at points in his career
and he's more than likely going to be a part of your or your bullpen next year anyway so it's
really good to see him go out there and pitch and you kind of need this guy you need this pivot guy
badly and it's been an important role for the mariners for years until recently i guess for some
reason.
So maybe,
just maybe if he can be the pivot guy,
uh,
and it would help everybody else slide into more natural spots.
And we'll see.
Dominguez certainly capable of getting big leverage outs.
We saw what he did in Houston.
Uh,
but, uh, he also,
you know,
there,
there's a lot of hit and miss,
uh,
in,
in his profile and,
and there's going to be a time where he's going to go out there and he's
going to walk three guys in a row.
And,
and that's just kind of part of it,
unfortunately.
But the stuff,
who, man,
The stuff is maybe probably second best stuff in the bullpen right now behind only Munoz.
But the consistency, just not there.
It never really has been.
But dude's filthy.
All right.
Coming up, we will talk about some injury updates on Brendan Donovan, J.P.
Crawford, Colt Emerson.

So Colt Emerson's rookie season is officially over.
He will undergo left wrist surgery tomorrow.
And he will be monitored over the course of the off season and have some limitations
placed upon him in terms of what he can do with his offseason work, including not swinging
the bat.
so Cole Emerson actually might be someone who could
benefit from the lockout and things getting delayed and pushed out a little bit further
so we'll see on that but Cole Emerson might be a little bit behind by the time that he is ready to go in 20207 as well
because of this wrist thing which sucks j b crawford is expected to be activated from the injured list today
before tonight's game and i would assume play shortstop for
the Mariners against his former team in the Phillies.
Of course, he heard that
Philadelphia was back in town and
had to come back in time for
that for the Revenous Series. So we'll
see if he can make something to happen here over
these two games against
the Phillies. But good to see
that JP is going to be back in
the swing of things.
And then lastly,
yeah. And then lastly,
Brennan Donovan.
Of course, now on the
concussion I.L. He
will be first eligible to return on Saturday and Toronto.
Not sure if that's actually going to happen,
but that's when he's first eligible to be able to be activated from the concussion
I.L.
But yesterday he was seeing him with his hood on and sunglasses on.
And we learn more details about what exactly happened to him before Saturday's game.
So apparently he was taking some swings on the cage against a live pitcher without a helmet on.
and according to Justin Hollander,
a freak accident happened,
and he was hit in the head.
And the Mariners have not identified who it was that through the pitch,
which if you do identify who that,
that is,
then, you know,
people are,
you know,
there's going to be freaks on the internet who try and go
in that person's DMs and all that.
So I'm totally fine with them not saying who it was,
but,
uh,
yeah,
this team,
man,
this team,
this is a,
Yeah, yeah. Donovan, I feel terrible for the guy. He's just had a season from hell.
But, like, is this not the perfect encapsulation of the 2026 Seattle Mariners?
You just get an injured guy back and he performs right away and he completely changes the outlook of your entire lineup because he's such a consistent, you know, consistently good at Pat at the top.
And, you know, he gets in there against who I assume is a rehabbing reliever or some kind.
uh and uh whatever how i don't know maybe fell the ball off the net and it came but down and hit him like
the what's uh the guy from rookie of the year uh the rhone gardner uh movie uh the pitching coach
uh hot ice baby hot ice but uh yeah it's maybe it was something like that maybe just got
bean i don't know and yeah the mariners of a player like yeah fine that's fine like we don't
we don't need to know who through the pitch we can speculate but whatever either way it sucks
no matter what, it sucks for Donovan, who has really performed every single time he's been healthy.
It's just, unfortunately, that's been for what, 45 games this year, if that.
You know, and not even like really stuff that's his fault.
It's the lingering stuff from his core surgery last winter, and it's, you know, hitting the bag a little bit wrong and that just wrecking him.
And then now it's this, this, you know, batting practice incident where I just, man, live.
Just you can't get lucky.
I mean, you can't stay healthy.
And again, it's not like he pulled a hammy and then like, oh, you know, oh, and then he, it's not the soft tissue stuff.
It's stuff from surgery and it's a concussion.
So, you know, certain people will complain that that Donovan's soft.
And those are the people who also think it's the worst thing in the world that they pay 12 cents for a grocery bag.
So who cares what they think.
Donovan's a tough dude who's having a really rough year.
And you see the difference when he plays.
in what the lineup looks like and how good do you feel about the lineup.
It's significant.
Like Donovan changes the outlook of this lineup.
And unfortunately,
he just hasn't been available for parts of it for most of the season.
And that stinks.
And you can remove him.
You remove JP from this lineup.
And you kind of remove the two guys who are like,
you know,
the contact, draw walks, work counts, like that type of player.
And it puts even more pressure on the guys who need to hit home runs to hit home runs.
because you're not creating offense the old-fashioned way, you know?
So it really is a sucky year for Donovan on the injury front.
But you've seen the proof of concept.
And he works incredibly well at this ballpark, his versatility,
which we haven't gotten to seen either because of other injuries,
not even related to him, have kind of forced him at third base.
So we've barely gotten to see the versatility that he provides.
And even still, you've seen what a valuable player he can be.
And so hopefully next year he's 100% healthy.
Hopefully he can get back this year.
and the concussion doesn't have any lingering symptoms.
That's the thing.
You never know how long it's going to take,
and you never know how long it's going to take you.
Even once you're cleared,
you don't know how long it's going to take you to get back on track.
So who knows what we get from Donovan the rest of the year.
But hopefully he's really healthy next year because he's a bit of a game changer
when he's in that lineup.
And so we shall see.
But yeah,
it's nice to have some clarity on Colt Emerson,
at least,
although it sounds like he's not going to be able to swing a bat until spring training.
Maybe invest a little bit of money
on that veteran infielder
who's going to be on the bench
might be a good time to do it if you're ever going to do it
but yeah we'll see how
Colt does and all that
and then yeah JP
yeah we'll see
sounds like there's a good chance he might be activated
today but
maybe not Tacoma wasn't playing yesterday so maybe they
just he just wanted to be around the boys
and isn't Justin Crawford
like his cousin? Well
Hollander said that
activated oh he's okay I saw that
you might be activated by today.
So, okay, so that's good.
He will help, certainly.
And, you know, it's,
Brock Rodden certainly, you know,
provided a spark here when he got called up.
And, and,
but, uh, the at-bats are,
are steadily getting worse.
Uh,
the defense hasn't been at short as,
as,
as you would hope.
Uh, so he might be headed back down.
Uh, could be Leo Rivas,
too,
uh,
but Rivas is looking a lot better as of late,
uh,
than Rodden.
But, uh, yeah,
nice to have JP back.
The Mariners are actually five games over 500 in games that JP starts.
So JP MVP,
perhaps some people are saying.
But yeah,
it'll be nice to have JP back.
And I assume he'll hit at the bottom of the lineup,
but I don't think they're going to throw him back into the leadoff spot,
at least not for a while.
So,
but he will be,
it'll be good to see him.
Again,
the wrist stuff,
that stuff,
tends to linger, man.
And so you never really know how his performance is going to be,
but at the very least, it's nice to have JP back.
And, yeah, I think the clubhouse missed him a little bit.
And I think that him playing shortstop,
while it's not the prettiest watch in the world,
there is a level of trust there from the players on the field.
And obviously what he can bring offensively is the significant upgrade over,
you know, the Brock Roddens and the Leo Reevosses.
So we'll see what move the Mariners are going to make on that front.
really good really going to be really happy to see jp
and yeah I'm happy that he's healthy enough to
at the very least get a send off of some kind
here in Seattle as he is approaching what is probably his last
30 games as a Seattle Mariner.
All right, that is going to do it for our show.
