Starting point is 00:00:00 What does Jorge Polanco have to do over these next two months to change the Marrars minds and have them pick up his 2025 option? Starting point is 00:01:01 Let's get into. you your questions here. We're going to start with Doug who wants to know. What do you think Jorge Polanco has to do rest of the season for the Mariners to exercise his, what, $10.5 million player option? I believe it is. Yeah, something like that. So obviously, first and foremost, he's got to check out healthy. You know, right now he's got a knee thing that he's dealing with. So obviously the extent to which that knee is going to be a problem. going forward is going to play a factor here. But on the field, if he's, you know,
Starting point is 00:01:38 240, 3, 20, 4, 50, somewhere in that range, then it probably makes a lot of sense. I mean, the Mariners are going to have to fill, you know, probably at least four or five lineup spots this off season. So if Polanco is, you know, good enough, if Polanco is an average bat the rest of the way, honestly, you probably should consider it because $10.5 million for a
Starting point is 00:02:03 average bat at second base or third base is not that much money. And, you know, it's one less position you have to fill. So there's no question about it. Palanco still has to be pretty darn good over the next two months for him to, you know, earn that option. But, you know, based on how he was in July and just in general how he looks right now, it does seem like he's maybe turned a corner a little bit and can actually put the mayors in a position where exercising that option makes sense. Again, it's only $10.5 million. The Mariners might think they can do better with that $10.5 million, but then they're opening up another hole that they have to go and fill.
Starting point is 00:02:41 So if they think that they can eliminate one more thing, they have to go buy this offseason, then they're probably going to take it. So I think if he's about league average, which I think right now is only like 230, 315, 380, something like that is about league average across the line. then they'd probably consider it. If he's better than that, you probably accept it because there's no guarantee that somebody like Cole Young is ready to go. And would you rather pay Jorge Polanco with his track record $10 million?
Starting point is 00:03:12 Or would you rather go give, you know, like Adam Frazier and what he's done the last couple of years, five or $6 million. So I think he's just got to be average the rest of the way for them to strongly consider picking it up. And if he's above average and assuming the knee checks out and all that stuff, then I'd say there's a lot of. a pretty decent possibility that they pick up that option because at the end of the day, it's just
Starting point is 00:03:34 not a ton of money and there's just not a lot of really good options that are going to be available in free agency. We're also talking about a guy here that was in the same organization since he was 16 years old now had to move organizations and maybe that led
Starting point is 00:03:52 to some of the struggles. Who knows? But if he gets it together here in the second half continues to play the way that he's been playing, maybe the marriage just look at it and kind of attribute it to that and whatever else and they go you know what we're going to trust the track record we're going to trust what we saw in the second half maybe he helped them you know in the postseason or whatever and uh you know we're going to pick up that option right because it's very reasonable especially with how limited options are going to be at second base still um
Starting point is 00:04:19 if you're able to have a veteran who you feel can at least produce at a lee average rate i think you probably have to take that shot yeah um you know and also there's some versatility there where it's like hey we can go get like nico horner or whatever this winter well okay polanco still makes sense as your third basement so yeah i think there's a pretty decent shot that they pick it up now if he falls off the table and it's you know april may polanco for the rest of the year then there's no shot they'll just have to figure something out there but as long as he's pretty good for the next two months i would say it's uh at least a true 50-50, which, you know, a month ago, we would have said it was 95% no that they were going
Starting point is 00:05:06 to pick up. Colin wants to know. Thoughts on bringing up Troy Taylor as a bullpen option. Seems to be doing really well down in AA Arkansas. He's one of the guys that we're planning on talking about here on a future episode, maybe tomorrow. We're going to go over some guys that are not on the 40-man roster that it could eventually be added and help the mirrors.
Starting point is 00:05:27 at some point here over the next couple of months. So what do you think about Taylor without giving too much away about what we're going to talk about possibly tomorrow? Yeah, interesting. Our kind of a funny story. He's the guy that the Mariners drafted, couldn't get signed, and then they just drafted him the next year and then signed him.
Starting point is 00:05:45 It's been moving up pretty quick. He's in AA this year. It's been a pretty rapid ascension. He's been good, pretty solid. To me, he profiles more as a middle reliever type right now. and we have to remember Seattle's already going to add J.T. Sharkaw to their bullpen this weekend. So that'll probably be for Diaz. And then if Santos has to hit the I.L, there's a couple options there.
Starting point is 00:06:12 You know, Cody Bolton is still a thing. He's still floating around out there. You know, Carlos Vargas has been on the 40 man all year and then consistently passed him over. He's been throwing the ball a little bit better last time I checked. I don't know if he's continued that or not. So there are other options who are on the 40-man, and the Mariners right now have a full 40-man roster. So they might prefer to give that a shot.
Starting point is 00:06:36 But Taylor certainly is one of those guys who could come up. He could be a solid middle, you know, middle-innings type of guy, like your Austin both or your Trent Thornton type. But I think my guess is that if they do have to make an additional move like Santos going on the I. They would just roll with Bolton. they would just roll with maybe even Vargas this time around. Maybe they just bring up Hancock and they kind of piggyback or they do something like that. But I do think that will most likely be somebody on the 40 man.
Starting point is 00:07:08 I think if we see Taylor, it probably wouldn't be until September. But maybe. It's certainly a possibility that he could be called up, you know, sometime on this homestand because he's certainly one of the guys that warrants. discussion and conversation as one of the eight best bullpen arms in your in your organization right now. Yeah. Since June 13th, 054 ERA down in AA Arkansas, it's a 1026
Starting point is 00:07:37 K's per 9, 216 walks per 9. Pretty good. Pretty solid. Just a 125 opponent average. 0.66 whip. Yeah. Might be something there. And again, the Mariners could use more swing and miss in their bullpen. So if Taylor is someone that you think can provide that, yeah, might be worth the call. All right. So we're going to answer more of your questions here in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown-Ares podcast is brought to you by Liquid Ivy and Supply House.

All right, let's get back into your questions here. So we're opening up the mailbag on a rare mailbag Thursday, folks.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Mariner Blue wants to know, is it possible that we see Harry Ford up in the big leagues this year, especially with Garver's complete falloff? What about Cole Young? On Ford, I would say probably not likely, especially now that he's dealing with this concussion that he's landed on the aisle with. I would say this, though, if he does get called up, I would think it's probably not as a catcher. he's probably playing somewhere else which we know he's played
Starting point is 00:10:57 at least one game in left field do you play any others after that? Okay, a couple now, yeah. Yeah, I would say that he's probably playing somewhere else because look, they're should they DFA Garver is a
Starting point is 00:11:11 different question than will they DFA Garver, right? So, and they're just, they're not going to DFA Garver. So, um, so he's the backup catcher. So they're not going to be looking at at Ford to essentially replace Mitch Garver, as I have seen suggested in our comment section.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Cole Young is kind of an interesting discussion, especially depending on how long it's going to take J.P. Crawford to get back. What do you think about that possibility? Because I assume he's another guy that we're probably going to talk about tomorrow, along with like Troy Taylor and some of those other guys. Sure. Young is having a nice year. He's been in Arkansas the entire year. And as a 20-year-old, the youngest hitter at the beginning of the year, at least who was, the youngest hitter in the Texas League, he's really held his own.
Starting point is 00:12:04 And it's been a very good year for him. Hasn't been as good recently. So not that he's been bad. Just, you know, he hasn't been tearing the cover off the ball or anything like that. So is he better right now than Dylan Moore? I don't know. Again, he's 20 years old. You know, young very well could come up and he could survive. He's probably going to make a lot of contact.
Starting point is 00:12:26 We know that he's, you know, pretty surehanded shortstop. Maybe not a spectacular one. But, you know, we'll make the routine play in front of him. So it's not impossible to think that he could be up. But I don't think his numbers at double A have quite, you know, reached the point where it's like, okay, he's ready for the challenge or anything like that. So I think they're probably just going to roll with Dylan Moore for the rest of the way until J.P's back. I don't love that.
Starting point is 00:12:50 But I don't know if I want to throw a 20-year-old, you know, who's never played even AAA ball. I don't know if I want to throw that guy in shortstop in the middle of a pennant race. The other thing with Harry, too, that I would keep an eye on is like maybe I can wrap my head around it easier if we start seeing him play elsewhere around the field. Like if he's playing in left field again, you know, with some form of regularity, or maybe he's playing second base or he's playing third base or something like that. Yeah. Then maybe like at that point I'm like, oh, okay, seems like they might be preparing to do that.
Starting point is 00:13:25 They're preparing to call them up. Right. With Young particular, I mean, Bliss is still in AAA. Samad Taylor is still in AAA. So there are other middle infield options that the Mariners almost certainly would rather use in, you know, big situations than the 20-year-old Cole Young. So wouldn't say zero percent chance on Young. is a pretty close to 0% chance on Harry Ford. But we'll see.
Starting point is 00:13:51 Things can change pretty drastically in just a couple weeks. And Marys might get to a point where they feel like they don't have a choice. Right. And we still need to see if Harry is able to make it back from his concussion. Obviously, those can be very, very tricky. And every concussion is different for people. So we don't know how he's going to take to it and how long it's going to take for him to get back to 100%. Alex wants to know,
Starting point is 00:14:17 Do you think Heston Kirstad could be a Mariners target in the offseason? Seems like the Orioles don't really care to truly give them a shot. Isn't there just a lot of Dom Kanzone in that profile? Like, I mean, yeah, yeah, yeah. There's more path to success to me with Kirsta than Kanzone. Right, but look at what Kanzone is right is for you right now. You know, he's the fifth outfielder right now. Now obviously, you move on from Hanager.
Starting point is 00:14:45 Robles is a free agent. So there's a path and you will have DHAAPs to give. So Kierstad probably, you know, would make some sense in a vacuum for Seattle. The question is how do you acquire him? Because the, you know, the Orioles are probably going to want to use him in a package to go get an impact major leaguer. It's like what impact major league are you trading off of your roster for Kirstad that the Orioles would want? Like you're not trading them a starting pitcher for Kirstad. Well, what I was thinking is like you're trading them losing.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Castillo and Kyrsad's just part of the package, right? Kyrsad's one of the several guys that you acquire. Right. So, yeah, in theory, in a vacuum without, you know, getting into the details. Yeah, I think there's some fit there. I think Seattle would have some interest. But overall, I think this is a guy that you just kind of like, yeah, we can take, if we can get a price on him that we like and we can take the shot, fine, we'll take it.
Starting point is 00:15:39 But he's not a guy I'm prioritizing this winter. It's just kind of, you know, a fallback plan. And I kind of want guys who have hit, you know, some consistency at the big leagues. And so, yeah, Kier said to me, he's kind of the fallback guy. If you could play second or third base, I might be more willing to take a shot on him. But he's first base, bright field, DH type of guy. The Mariners have more than a few of those in their org right now. All right.
Starting point is 00:16:04 So we are going to answer more of your questions here in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Maris podcast is once again brought to you by game time. You can catch all the action between the Marrers and the Phillies on the Marrish hometown broadcasts with Sirius v, the SXM, the SXM app. All you have to do to find that is search the word mariners.
Starting point is 00:17:20 All right, let's answer the last couple of questions we got here out of the mailbag. Ben wants to know. At what point do we consider Victor Robles, a serious option for the future? Do you think he's just a flash on the pan? Or do you believe he may really have turned a corner and is finally living up to his potential?
Starting point is 00:17:38 When should the front office just pull the trigger and try to extend him? two thoughts on that one if you're victor why wouldn't you want to at least go out into the market and see right especially if you're able to finish out this year strong and healthy of course like that's the other key thing here like with the plonka discussion is like how healthy is he um and then two with the mariners like yeah maybe you're interested in an extension right now and trying to lock him up before he goes out and test the market because you have so many spots on your that you're theoretically going to have to fill this off season. But you're going to want to try and protect yourself in case he does fall off a cliff because you're basically basing your interest and an extension off of a month worth of good games. So, yeah, if you're the Mariners, you're going to try and sign him to a very team-friendly deal, both in terms of length and also money.
Starting point is 00:18:40 and again, if you're Victor at that point, when you want to just go out into the market and see if you can get something that's more beneficial to you? I mean, if you want to stay in Seattle, because we've heard about how they've helped him with his swing and they've helped him make changes and they've essentially been pretty critical in terms of helping him turn his career around.
Starting point is 00:19:02 I mean, the guy literally got outright released by the team that developed him and he won a World Series with. So he kind of hit rock bottom just recently in his career. So maybe he just feels like, you know what? I owe a lot to the organization. I want to be here. I feel comfortable in this organization.
Starting point is 00:19:21 I feel comfortable in Seattle. I like playing with Julio, et cetera. Maybe he just wants to say, right? But again, if the Mariners are, are interested in doing that, they're going to try and do it at a very team-friendly cost. And for him, I just, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:19:37 I don't think that's the smartest decision to just jump into that before he at least sees what's out on the market right if you're victor robles you're looking at a free agent market that's not great you're having a fantastic year you can play center field for a lot of teams in this league you're only 27 years old like i don't think he turns 28 until march or next year so he is entering he'll be entering his age 28 season which is still his he'll be one of the youngest free agents yeah right and so like if you're seattle you want to protect yourself in case this guy is just a flash in the pan. And so what are you offering?
Starting point is 00:20:10 Like one year, $3 million and one year, four million dollars? Like, you're probably only interested in a one year extension. If you're Robles, it's like, it might be like a one plus one.
Starting point is 00:20:20 Right. But if you're Robles, you're like, heck, like sometimes these guys go out here and they get seven, eight, nine million bucks to be a fourth outfielder. Like,
Starting point is 00:20:29 why can't I get seven, eight, nine million dollars? And obviously Seattle, as far as we know, is going to have to be kind of careful with their money because John Stan. Obviously, they did some adding at the deadline,
Starting point is 00:20:40 which was nice to see, but until they do it in the winter, who knows if that's something that's here to stay or that was just a one-time thing. So you do have to be a little bit careful with how you spend your money. But if you are going to pursue an extension, this is the time,
Starting point is 00:20:54 the month of August is a really good time to try and get extensions done. So I wouldn't be shocked if they tried. But I think, like, for me, if I'm Robles, I'm like, okay, let's go like three and like 16 or something like that to give me some security. And if I'm the mayor, I'm like, I don't know if I want to give you three full years. What if I give you like one and then like a mutual option of like with some incentives?
Starting point is 00:21:20 Like there's definitely a deal that could be worked where both sides are happy. But like you said, if you're Robles, it's like, okay, well, if I have that deal in my back pocket, why don't I just go out there in two months and see what's out there? And if I can't get a deal that I like better than that, I'll just come back to Seattle. I like it here. So I have that in my back pocket. So for me, if I'm Robles at 27, this also kind of depends on how he finishes,
Starting point is 00:21:43 you know, the rest of this year. If he just goes back to Nationals, Victor Robles for the next two months, mares aren't going to be interested. Obviously, he's not going to be this good for another two months. But if he is just like a really solid fourth outfielder,
Starting point is 00:21:57 then yes, Seattle actually kind of needs that type of profile in their, in their system. They don't have a true backup center fielder. in their system and one who's 27 years old he can run around you know he's got some pop like yeah i do think that they are going to be interested assuming that he is you know at least a league average bat the rest of the way but i do think that ultimately what's going to happen is victor's going to say let me just see what's out there let me go let me go check steve anybody wants to beat your offer
Starting point is 00:22:24 and if not i'll come back so i don't think an extension gets done i do think the mariners are interested in bringing him back and i do think robles would be interested in coming back it's just a practical standpoint of just like let's just wait and see all right last question of the day comes from mark and this is about something that uh we touched upon uh at the end of yesterday's episode um has there ever been more of a time to let someone know we have their back now with a standing ovation for Mitch garver i know he struggled but getting death threats can't help him get over the hump nothing else it's a way of the fan base apologizing for the idiot fringe in their group because you know honestly like at the end of the day maybe Mitch Garber doesn't work out here
Starting point is 00:23:11 and certainly it doesn't look like he's going to but you know at some point like you've crossed the line so much where like should Mitch forgive the Mariners fan base because they've gone after his family. They've gone after him. Like, you know, and it may, it's probably just a couple of people, but that's still, like at some point, you have to apologize for a couple people too many. Right. And so, you know, to me, like the same ovation may not even be about like, hey, we got your back or we believe in you or anything like that. It's just like, we're sorry that you've had to deal with this, uh, because some, you know, lunatic fringe, uh, is making this a personal thing. And so, you know, we just want you to know, that's not all of us and that's not we we don't accept that as fans that that should just be part of
Starting point is 00:24:01 this so yeah i do think that you know organizing the standing ovation would be pretty cool um you know you're willing to do it for hulio uh so uh and by all accounts by the way Mitch garber is just he's a great dude uh he's very well liked in every clubhouse he's ever been in uh you know real family guy and and so it just you know it sucks it sounds like this is like a genuinely good dude who is going through, you know, struggles both physically and mentally right now. And now he has to deal with all this extra stuff that nobody should have to deal with. Nobody should, you know, have their life threatened or anything like that. Nobody should, nobody should have their family, you know, receive these messages because
Starting point is 00:24:42 they're struggling at a game for our entertainment. Like that is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. So, yeah, I do think it would be really cool. Yeah, I do think it would be really cool if, you know, somebody wanted to. organize that. I don't know he's going to be on the lineup on Friday or not. So who knows, but I do think that there needs to be some recognition from the fans in the stadium that, you know, hey, this isn't okay. Like we're not accepting this. We're not excusing this. And kind of the only way you can show that is some kind of demonstration at the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:25:18 And that would be a standing ovation. So I do think that would be warranted. I think that'd be really cool. And I think it's more deserved than when they tried to do it for Julio. Because Julio was just struggling, right? As far as we know. So Garver, I think like nobody's more disappointed in Mitch Garver than Mitch Garver.
Starting point is 00:25:38 Just keep that in mind. And that these are people. And sometimes you just need to be, you know, reminded that you're not alone and that you know, we got your back on a lot of things. So hopefully somebody organizes it.
Starting point is 00:25:54 I'm not going to be at the ballpark this weekend. But yeah, if somebody wants to try and organize that and reach out to us, we'll see what we can do to help. But I do think that, you know, the fan base needs to make some kind of statement to Garber on a very public forum or platform. And like, hey, man, like we got your back. We got your back, dude.
Starting point is 00:26:17 Yeah. But yeah. Like him saying, this though doesn't make him exempt from criticism right doesn't let him off the hook just want to reiterate that and secondly yeah he makes a lot of money playing a game
Starting point is 00:26:30 yeah there's idiots in every fan base players receive stuff like this unfortunately and on any team in any sport it's just how things unfortunately are but that's no justification
Starting point is 00:26:46 for it that's no excuse for it that's no excuse for it that's no reason to gloss over it, right? That's a very serious thing that Mitch Garber is saying has happened to him and potentially his family as well. And there's no place for that. And like I said, yesterday, like, if you don't like that or you participated in that, if you don't appreciate us saying that, see you. Like, we don't want you here.
Starting point is 00:27:15 Like, you listen to Lockedown Marries and you're doing that stuff or you, or you, you know, you're fine with that happening within the fan base. I'm good. You don't need to listen to our show anymore. Just remember, guys, saying like, that's awful, but it's basically donning what is happening. Like, you're not saying anything. You're just trying to shield yourself from extra criticism because that's awful, full stop, end of sentence. Yeah, I've seen far too many comments, particularly on Twitter that are like, yeah,
Starting point is 00:27:48 you know death threats are never okay but he is making 24 million dollars nope no what you're really saying there is that death threats are okay because he's making 24 million dollars yeah he'll wipe away his tears with his money blah blah blah blah whatever we get it guys rich playing a game right totally get it right he has far less issues than most of us right totally understand that still a human being at the end still human being at the end of the end still shouldn't be subjected to garbage like that. Full stop. All right.
