It's in the description of this episode.
Three to two, the final score from T-Mobile Park.
Mariners take game one against the Rangers and walk off fashion.
J.P. Crawford with a two-run double over the head of Evan Carter
as the Texas bullpen implodes once again, Colby,
this terrible, terrible Texas bullpen,
I almost called them Houston, Texas bullpen,
which gave the Mariners plenty of chances.
down in Arlington.
Unfortunately, the Mariners were not able to get the job done that time around,
but this time around, they do.
They did nearly blow it.
They had bases loaded.
Nobody out in the bottom of the ninth against a Raldus Chapman.
Then Jonathan Hernandez came in.
And yes, bases loaded, no outs.
That is the enemy.
That has been the enemy of the 2023 Seattle Mariners.
Mike Ford with a shallow flyout.
Josh Rojas pops out in Fowell Territory.
But thankfully, the captain put the sea on his chest already.
J.P. Crawford comes through, find some grass, scores a couple of runs, walks off the Rangers, spoils all their fun for tonight, at least.
Still three games left in this series.
So plenty of opportunities for the Rangers to clench the AOS.
But for now, we are still not crowned thanks to J.P. Crawford.
Colby, your thoughts?
J.D.P.
He is that dude.
Oh, captain, my captain, like put the sea on the chest already.
Let's get this done.
What are we waiting for?
Yeah, it was incredible because, you know, it's throughout most of the night,
the bats were just awful.
And, you know, you're just kind of sitting there.
And at some point you get to the point where you're like,
okay, well, let's just get Montgomery out of this game.
We can go up against this bullpen.
And then the bullpen came in and it made you look bad.
And it's over.
at that point, and you know how important this game is.
It's critical to have any shot really whatsoever.
You needed this game to get within one of Houston, much more manageable to make up one game
in three than it is to make up two.
So yeah, you absolutely needed it tonight, and you just wasn't looking like it.
And then, you know, credit to Cal Raleigh who comes up and gets a big hit.
Credit to Dylan Moore who comes up.
He gets a big hit as well.
And, you know, Ty France goes out there.
and try to expand the zone, doesn't try to do too much.
Now, granted, those pitches weren't all that close to the strike zone,
but whatever, that hasn't stopped him from swinging at pitches like that in the past.
So, you know, he draws the walk,
and you just kind of start to feel the energy in that building kind of pick up
and fans start to believe again.
But then, you know, they make the pitching change really quick,
and here comes Hernandez, and it's forward.
over Kelnick and you know it's that seems weird and then it's Rojas who doesn't get the job done
and you're just kind of sitting there and it's it's JP man it's JP who has been the best hitter
one of the best hitters in baseball with the bases loaded he has been a lot better the last couple
days than he was the previous four or five and you're just kind of sitting there hoping that he gets it
done but really feeling like man they're really going to blow this they are they're going to
you know their season is essentially going to end because they couldn't get a guy in from third
with less than two outs with the game on the line.
Like that is so fitting.
But J.P. says no.
He gets 97, 98 down the middle of the plate,
kind of inside out, swing, slices it over,
just over the head of Evan Carter out in left field.
And the rest is history.
You know, the Mariners live to, you know,
live to fight another day and they desperately need it because, I mean,
tomorrow they're thrown Brian Wu.
But tonight we're celebrating JP.
Tonight we're celebrating a really gutsy performance.
from the Mariners pitching staff too is definitely going to be overshadowed,
but Logan Gilbert was fantastic, gave up a couple solo home runs.
But other than that, he held it down.
And Isaiah Campbell came in, he gives up a hit.
And then he, you know, just walks it down.
And Gabe Spire comes out, and he was fantastic.
Did exactly what you needed him to do.
Gets five outs, looks really dominant against the lefties in this lineup.
And then Munoz comes in and finishes it off,
and your bullpen is right back in good shape again.
You should have Munoz tomorrow.
You should have Brass.
You should have top.
even Spire for a couple out should be available.
So, yeah, the pitching staff was just gritty,
and they held down a really good lineup,
and they held them to two solo home runs.
I think they only had three hits the entire game.
Not a ton of traffic.
They didn't walk anybody.
Like, Mariner's pitching was exceptional tonight,
and it just felt like you were just going to waste it
because that's kind of been what you've done this month.
Either you get the really good offense,
and the pitching doesn't hold up their end,
or it's the other way around.
And tonight, it certainly felt like that.
and then J.P. Crawford walked to the plate and kind of grew his legend as, you know,
Mariner fan favorite. And it was, it was much needed, both, you know, obviously for playoff
picture and stuff like that, but also just for the soul of this team and the soul of this fan base.
Like, man, people, people are down bad. They're down bad, us included, mostly you.
Right.
But yeah, they needed it, and it injects a little bit of hope into this weekend.
And it does give you a realistic shot to still kind of backdoor your way into the playoffs.
And that's what captains do.
They step up with the game on the line.
And they get the job done.
They find a way to get it done.
And even when they don't get it done every single time, you still feel good about your chances that that guy's going to give me a good at bat.
That guy's going to give me a shot.
And that's who JP has been most of this year.
and that's who he was tonight and you needed it.
And you got it.
The captain delivered.
Yeah.
And as far as the, you know,
playoff picture goes,
this was a huge win because you were an out away
from being two games back of the Astros.
Now you are one game back of the Astros with three to play.
So we're going to talk more about that a little later on the show.
But yeah,
hell of a moment for J.P. Crawford,
who is undoubtedly the captain of this team.
And, you know,
You don't have to ask me.
You can just ask Cal Raleigh, who I just lost the quote,
but I'll bring it back up here from Shannon Dreher,
Cal Raleigh on the field saying that's the reason why he's the leader of this team.
He came through in the clutch and he's done it over and over again.
Yes, he certainly has.
J.P. Crawford.
Great night.
And of course, we have to mention what happened after the walkoff.
The great moment.
I'm sure if you are on Twitter,
you have seen it.
Unfortunately, we can't repeat it on here,
but let's,
let's fricking go.
Let's freaking go.
LFG, baby.
Also to sign the camera afterwards,
the camera lens.
JP's just so cool.
He's so cool.
And Brad Adam, of course,
you know,
he comes on right after he says,
you know,
we have to apologize,
et cetera, et cetera,
everything he has to say
to appease the FCC.
But afterwards,
says, you know, but you kind of get it though.
Kind of get it though, right?
Like, yeah, absolutely.
This team needed this.
Even if they don't make the playoffs, I'm still very much on the boat that it's, it's
most likely a wrap because they still have to have some things outside of their control
to happen.
They still have to have a really good series here against Texas.
But if they can just end this season on a fairly positive note and don't completely go out
like chomps. That would be good for morale at least. I mean, obviously, this season is still
wholly a disappointment if you don't make the postseason. But if you can at least not just
get your ass beat by Texas before we get out of here, that would be nice. So let's talk about
Logan Gilbert, who had a really strong start. Might be his last start of the season. We'll see.
We're going to talk about that in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the

two of the series on the Marrers hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via the SXM app tomorrow night.
So Logan Gilbert made his first.
Final start of the regular season tonight, and he went six strong.
Six innings pitch, like I said, two run runs on a couple of home runs, solo home runs,
just three hits, overall, five strikeouts, no walks for Logan, and only six hard hit balls on the night.
What did you think about his night?
Yeah, he was really good.
He was aggressive in the strike zone, but he was also on the corners, you know, struggled a little bit in the first half, or the first inning.
pitch count. It wasn't that he was making poor pitches or anything like that. It's just,
you know, Texas was able to foul off a bunch of pitches. I think he threw 21 in the first inning.
And typically that can kind of basically every 20 pitch inning more or less cost you an extra
inning at the end. So yeah, that was, again, the pitches were sharp and they were on the corners
and just Texas was making them work. And so with the bullpen and the position it's in right now
without your, you know, probably two of your three best guys available tonight.
That was a little concerning early on, but he really settled in.
And again, the stuff was never an issue for, for Logan tonight.
A couple of pitches got away from him, hung a couple.
Those were both hit for home runs.
Go figure.
But, yeah, it was, you know, against a righty heavy lineup.
He went slider primarily tonight.
It was 39% slider, 29% four seam,
24% split.
So mixed it up a little bit,
but the slider was the primary weapon tonight.
Average exit Velo on the slider,
just 85 miles an hour.
So it was a really good pitch for him.
Seven whiffs on 25 swings.
Not a great number.
Not terrible.
But yeah, it's kind of interesting.
His best swing and miss pitch was actually the knuckle curve.
He threw only eight of them.
He got two whiffs on three of those swings, though.
So yeah, you know,
it wasn't a night where he was.
He was just blowing the ball by guys.
He wasn't, you know, just dominating and, you know,
but it was, he was pitching.
He was pitching effectively on the corners, going after guys, not a lot of deep counts,
you know, just being really aggressive with the fastball up in the zone and the wipeout
slider against the righties and some really good splitters against Corey Seeger in particular,
which is always the key.
You can hold down Seeger in this lineup.
You have a good shot.
So, yeah, he was very good.
Um, it was, you know, it was, it was Kirbyesque where there weren't a ton of strikeouts.
It wasn't just like domination from the start, but it was just really good, consistent, solid execution of a game plan.
Uh, and yeah, he, uh, he took advantage of a cold night, you know, and he wasn't afraid to be really aggressive with his stuff.
And, and you hope that it's something that, uh, you know, the next three guys can carry over into their starts.
But Gilbert was very good tonight.
And, you know, it's not, it's not the first time we've seen Gilbert be really good in these big moment games.
Remember, he started the clincher last year against Oakland.
And I think he went eight, eight innings of one run ball.
So, yeah, it's not the first time.
We know that he's stepped up big against teams like the Astros, the Rangers.
He's pitched three times against the Rangers.
He's given up two runs each time that he's pitched against them.
So he has managed this lineup better than any Mariners starter.
and he did it again tonight very well done very nice job for by Logan gilbert tonight so he wraps up his third season in the majors
second full season i would say he did throw 120 innings in his rookie year but i would say this is his
second full season because he started you know on opening day with the big league club uh career high
192 thirtnings pitched 892 ks per nine a career low 1.7 walks per nine 3 7 3 7 3 7 3 7
3 ERA 385 FIPP 377 X-FIP.
We'll see if he gets another shot to pitch.
It would be fun to see him.
But, you know,
the Marriers obviously have quite a bit of work to do
in order to make that happen.
Right. Don't roll him out for Sunday out of the pen.
It's unlikely,
but if you get into a situation where you have to win on Sunday
and, you know, you need a couple innings.
Kirby or Gilbert should be able to give them to you.
again, it's high risk, high reward.
You would want Gilbert, in theory, to start two days later if you did sneak into the playoffs.
But you got to do what you got to do.
And he only threw 97 pitches tonight.
I mean, it wasn't 110.
It wasn't 115.
So he should be relatively well rested for his next start if he indeed gets it.
And if he doesn't, you know, it's another step forward season for Gilbert who continues to show that he is at worst, a high, you know, a high functioning mid, mid-rotation number three type of
starter at worse. And obviously we've seen plenty this year to suggest that there's still yet
another gear for Gilbert to find. So great year for him. It was capped off by a great night.
You know, hopefully again, he does get another start because that means your, your Mariners are
in the playoffs. But if not, this was a great way to end it. And it's really two starts in a row where
he has handled a very good Texas lineup and his offense almost let him down both times.
I'd, uh, I'd also be remiss not to, uh, to mention Julio, uh, tonight. Um, you know, obviously,
we know what happened last night.
He came back early to the ballpark today.
Got some early work in the cage.
And then, you know, just one for four night tonight.
But that one hit really mattered.
It was the only time the Mariners' offense was able to get to Jordan Montgomery
tonight opposite field home run for Julio.
That's just what Julio does.
Oppo home runs.
So, yeah, so, you know, props to Julio.
Again, you know, not like an amazing night whatsoever, but he helped.
and he helped this this team stay stay in it.
Right.
He also had a slicing line drive in the eighth that Tavares made a really nice play on.
So easily could have been two for four with a homer in a double tonight.
But, you know, sometimes it goes like that.
The home run just barely clears right field.
I think it actually hit off of Adolus's glove.
And that's kind of what propelled it over the fence.
But still a really nice piece of hitting.
It was a curve ball low and away on the outside corner in Julio.
Still is able to barrel up and drive it in a pretty cold and wet night.
in Seattle. So good piece of hitting from Julio. That's what we talked to me. He's needed to step up.
These guys, Julio, Gino, Teo, they need to step up in these next few games. And, you know,
Julio did his part tonight. He looked much better at the plate, much more comfortable.
And, you know, Gino, you know, some really horrible outbats, but he did have a double.
Unfortunately, Seattle not able to take advantage of that. But yeah, you know, it is what it is.
So Ryan DeVich confirms the mayor will be starting Brian Wu tomorrow night.
He thought they might use an opener, maybe go bullpen day or use Wu after the opener, something like that.
But it will be Wu taking a bump to start that one tomorrow night.
So we'll see how that goes.
Yeah.
Real fast.
I think the underrated star of this ball game is Gabe Spire.
Yes.
Five innings tonight, only through 20 pitches to get five outs.
Uh, listen to this.
He threw five innings tonight.
Oh,
sorry,
five outs tonight.
Uh,
he only threw 20 pitches to get,
uh,
the five outs.
And that's good because again,
with Wu on the mound tomorrow,
you have to be quick on that trigger.
I wouldn't be shocked if Wu gets ganged after three,
even if they're scoreless.
Like you have to,
you have to do what you got to do here.
And this is why I would be really good if the mayor scored some runs against
Avaldi,
I believe tomorrow.
Um,
but yes,
fire tonight,
uh,
he threw 10 sliders,
right?
Got six swings.
four whiffs.
Yeah, one slider put in play.
It was an 89-mile-an-hour exit velo, no damage there.
He also threw five fastballs, and he got four swings and three whiffs on that pitch.
So of the 20 pitches that spire through tonight, 12 of them resulted in a swing.
Seven of those 12 resulted in a swing and miss.
He was absolutely nails when he needed him to be, and particularly against Seeger.
and low to really kind of give you a fighting chance to get back in this game.
So JP gets all the credit.
Of course he does.
He deserves a lot of it.
And Logan has obviously had another great start.
But you don't win this game tonight.
If Gabe Spire didn't do what he did.
And so we should recognize that.
Yeah, that's some mighty fine pitching there by Gabe Spire.
And we'll see who's available tomorrow night, given Wu starting.
I wouldn't expect.
even if Wu goes scoreless, like you said,
I wouldn't expect that he's going to go very long here.
You're just going to try and get whatever you can out of him
and hope that you can survive off of that.
All right, so we're going to talk about the playoff picture.
What is this wind do for the Mariners?
What do they have to do the rest of the way?
What else do they need to have happen?
All that good stuff in just a moment.

Bandwale, official partner of the NFL.
And you're listening to the Locktime Mariners Postgame show.
Thank you again for making us your first listen after the Mariners'
3-2 walk-off victory over the Texas Rangers.
You can catch game two of this series as the Mariners look to stay alive
and keep the Rangers away from that AL-West crown on the Mariners' hometown broadcasts
with Sirius XM via the SXM app.
So, as we mentioned earlier in the show,
It was huge to get this win because you were an out away from being two games back of the Astros.
But now you go into the final three games, just one game back of the Houston Astros.
So, Colby, break it down for us.
How do the Mariners, there are multiple ways this can happen.
But how can the Mariners get into the postseason still?
Right.
So the easiest way is to win one more game than that.
the Houston Astros this weekend.
That's the most straightforward way.
You'd be the six.
You'd go to Minnesota.
You have the tiebreaker over Houston,
even though they beat you in the last series.
So if you finish with the same record,
you're getting in ahead of them.
That is the easiest way.
It's the most straightforward way.
So, you know, I really still think you have to go three and O.
You have to win these next three to have a great shot.
But, you know, you never know if Arizona can find a way
to take two of three.
You're in a really good spot.
you know, this weekend.
So that's the most straightforward way.
There is a path where you get in over Baltimore,
but that is a 30-0-Toronto.
Sorry, Toronto.
That is a 30-0 sweep in both directions.
Toronto has to get swept by the rays,
who really don't have anything to play for at this stage,
and the Mariners have to sweep Texas,
and both of those teams have a lot to play for.
There is a fun scenario that is probably the least likely thing
in the history of the world to play out.
But there is a scenario
where your Seattle Mariners
still win the American League West.
And not only do they win the AL West,
they knock Houston out of the playoffs.
Yeah.
Now, here's what would need to happen.
And this is why it's just ridiculous.
But the Mariners would need to win all three games this weekend.
Yes, yes.
Houston would need to go two and one.
If that happens, there is a three-way tie for the A.L. West,
all three teams would have 89 wins.
In a three-way tiebreaker,
the first tiebreaker would head to head,
but since there's three teams, that doesn't apply.
The next tiebreaker is record versus your division.
The Mariners with three wins would have the best win percentage
against the American League West of those three teams.
And here's kind of the cherry on top of that one.
In the one in a billion shot that it plays out like that,
Houston would be the team that would miss the playoffs.
Texas would get in.
So there is a universe of, you know, Dr. Strange visited 14,000, 6505,
universes.
There is one where the Mariners win the division and knock Houston out of the playoffs entirely.
But again, the most straightforward way.
Colby, I've seen the timeline.
There's only one way we can win.
I mean, if we get to Sunday and that's a possibility, good.
Then we can think about that.
but that is the only way you can get in via the division,
you know,
division title,
but just something to think about it,
put it in the back of your head,
probably win the next two against Texas,
and then you can worry about that.
But in all reality,
your only shot is to win one more game than Texas this weekend.
And if you do that,
you're in,
or one more game than Houston this weekend.
If you do that, you're in.
If you go 3 and 0,
you feel really good about your chances to go in.
Just simply because tomorrow,
when you look at the pitching matchups, for example,
tomorrow it is
Zach Gallen
versus Hunter.
Is it Hunter Brown?
Or is it?
Yeah.
It's Christian Javier.
I think it's Hunter Brown.
Yeah, no, because we saw Javier.
Right.
It's a huge advantage to Arizona.
Game two is a pretty decent advantage.
It's Merrill Kelly versus,
I don't remember who it is,
but not one of their big guns.
And then Sunday.
It's actually, it's J.P. France tomorrow.
JP France, okay.
So yeah.
And then.
It's Verlander on Saturday and then to be determined on Sunday.
Right.
So it looks like they might have moved Verlander.
And then I think Kelly, Merrill Kelly is pitching.
So you have a shot.
I think to get in, though, you probably have to sweep Texas.
So, you know, you have to treat all these games, these next three games, like they're must win.
You have to treat them like you did tonight.
And you have to treat them like you did, you know, against Houston on, what was that, Tuesday?
like you have a five run lead doesn't matter we have to go to munoz we have to go to brash you
have to win out is kind of the the methodology you have to take and then at the end of the night you
can look at the scoreboard and say okay do we did did this loss end our season yes no well then
i guess we didn't need to win out but i think the mentality that mariner fans need to have
and the mentality that the mariners themselves are going to have is that we have to win the
next three to give us to give ourselves a shot it's totally not out of the realm of possibility
that arizona sweeps houston and then you
only have to win one.
How great would that be?
I wouldn't count on it.
I definitely wouldn't count on it.
Just assume that you have to win three to give yourself a shot.
And I think that's how Scott Service will manage these next three games.
And hey, you know what?
We don't have to see that awful lefty pitcher lineup.
We get to see, you know, Cal Raleigh hitting third or whatever, and Teo hitting four.
And we get to see Mike Ford, DH.
And like, we don't have to watch Sam Haggarty.
Who had a pretty nice game tonight, though?
Like, that's.
He did.
Sam had a nice game.
Props to Sam Haggody.
Yeah.
Last couple games.
He's pretty nice game.
Yeah.
So, you know, didn't result in much.
But Sam, Sam was, Sam's been fine.
Sam's been fine.
Dill Moore on the other hand, but Dylan's scores the game winning run tonight.
So it doesn't matter.
That's right.
That's right.
It all by himself.
That's right.
Dillam Moore won this game.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He did.
But.
So what you're saying is we need to give Thanos the timestone.
And then we win the division still.
Right?
right that's what you're saying right what i'm saying is that i did a solo episode of c tz today
our patreon show yeah it and i made it i made it free for everybody so if you're still on the fence
you can listen to it just click the link in our description below patreon dot com for it slash control
or just use the link down below and you can listen to the episode for free and you guys can see
how I how like I am unburdened when tie is not there trying to drag me down because I've already
gotten a couple messages about how pleasant the tone of that episode was and how like uplifting
and further proof that Colby does this as a bit to annoy me and contrast me although what what is
yeah but what's the common denominator here you're not there I'm the I'm the I'm the more
level headed guy so right right provoke me so right sure
that out but yeah at the end of the night it was I think it's more that you just have to make it up
because you have to make up for the lack of my optimism so I think that you're just like a dark
force that just kind of like brings everybody down so yeah fair fair I mean because I hate
Julio obviously like I'm just the biggest hater in the world of Julio he's not allowed to
have any fun he's not allowed to have bad games you know
etc, et cetera, et cetera.
Yeah.
There are those who believe that.
Yeah, no, they're really, they really are.
They really are.
Yeah.
No, but yeah, it's a fun night.
You know, they stay alive for another night.
Early as they can be eliminated as Saturday night.
So they're going into at least game 161 with a shot.
Not exactly where you want to be, but you're happy that you're at least there.
And, you know, anything can happen.
It's baseball game.
It's crazy.
For all we know, Wu goes six scoreless tomorrow or the Mariners score seven off of
Valde or what we don't know we don't know how it's going to play out maybe this is the the one
timeline where the Mariners still win the American League West who knows but the the point is is
that the Mariners have gotten themselves to at least game 161 with a shot to still make the
playoffs you know and and tomorrow I hate those words I hate the words game 161 yeah I mean
we're talking about game 161 and games 162 whenever they're eliminated trust me I got that
that barrel loaded.
You're going to be there on Sunday, too.
I am.
I am.
It wouldn't be the first time I've gone to a marriage's game at 161 or 162 just to watch
them lose and miss the playoffs by a game.
But hopefully we don't do that this year.
How about this?
How about the marriage just win the next two and the Astros lose the next two?
That would be very up.
Why don't we just make this easy?
Really.
You know the answer to that.
To quote Aaron Goldsmith on Twitter tonight,
what?
You thought they were.
we're going to win six to one.
There you go.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We'll see.
But hey,
you know what?
We got a shot.
We're heading into the weekend with a legit shot to make the playoffs.
And, you know,
it's not exactly where we want to be after where we were just a couple of weeks ago.
But it is what it is.
And opportunity.
Sometimes that's all you need.
I traveled through the multiverse.
I saw the timeline.
Let's make it happen.
You could change the world with a swing of the bat.
There you go.
Let's get it done this weekend.
There you go.
All right.
On that note, that's going to do it for our show.
