So on the show today, we're going to talk about how the playoffs are a bit of a different animal
from the regular season, which of course, duh, but we're going to go over some of the examples of
some things that might be a little bit different.
the postseason from how you know you see these games play out during the regular season we'll also
talk about what we're going to be watching for in the tiger's guardian series which is already underway
actually got it going here on the second monitor so we'll talk a little bit more about that
mostly talk about what we're looking for in game two of that series and hopefully a game three
which is kind of the biggest takeaway or biggest thing for us spoiler alert but we're going to start
here the baroners have announced their taxi squad
for the post season and it's pretty lengthy.
There's 11 guys on it.
All of these guys you'll be able to see if you're going to the simulated games,
either tomorrow or Thursday.
I believe it's only $10 to get in and the,
all the money goes to Mariners Care.
So that's pretty cool.
There are six pitchers on the taxi squad,
Logan Evans, Michael Folmer, Austin Kitchen,
Casey Legamina, Colin Snyder, and Troy Taylor.
No real surprises there.
then on the position player side of things,
catcher Nick Raposo,
infielder slash outfielder,
Samad Taylor,
outfielder Ryan Lynn Thomas,
and infielder Ben Williamson,
and finally,
most notably,
Cole Emerson is on this taxi squad,
which might not mean a whole lot in the end,
but the Mariners also didn't have to put him on their taxi squad,
but they did. So it's kind of interesting
after his nice little couple,
coffee with the raineers.
So you'll be able to see Cole Emerson if you head out to the simulated games.
Do you know if they're televising those, by the way?
I don't believe they are.
Yeah, not like streaming them on mirrors.com or anything like that.
You think they might, but no, as far as I know, they have not announced any kind of
YouTube stream or anything like that.
They used to do that a little bit with the summer camp games.
You remember back in the 2020, they used to be on YouTube.
and I think they actually streamed one or two of them on or they played one or two of them on route,
but they haven't made those announcements.
I kind of doubt they will.
But yeah,
those are available to you if you're in the area and have $10.
I believe they're only going to be six inning games, though.
So,
you know,
keep out of mind.
Yeah.
So I guess a lot of you are probably wondering,
like,
does this mean Cole Emerson can potentially make the roster?
I don't think so because I,
like,
you're not going to give him starts,
even if he did make the roster.
So what does he bring to the table coming off the bench or what have you?
I don't know if there really is a whole lot to, to, you know, rush him, essentially.
And also go like, hey, if you're going to make your major league debut,
it's going to be in like the highest leverage, you know, game possible.
Right.
So, yeah, I don't know.
He is a well above average defensive shortstop, which the Mariners do not have on their current roster.
That's basically the only role.
Emerson's on the rock.
Like most of these guys are on the roster, not roster.
Most of these guys are on this made-up taxi squad.
It's not a real thing, guys.
It's not like an officially MLB sanctioned thing.
But they're all here because they very clearly serve a specific role.
You have a lefty just in case one of your lefties get hurt.
You have an outfielder just in case one of your outfielder's get hurt.
And Colt Emerson is clearly here in case J.P. Crawford or potentially Leo Rivas got hurt because, you know, those are the only two short stops on your 26-man roster right now.
and one of them goes down, you know, in a game, the other one has to play,
and then you're going to need a shortstop.
Like you can't just not have a backup shortstop on ready to go.
It's too important of a position.
So Emerson's very clearly here to just be like the emergency shortstop.
If something happens to JP, then he'll be the guy that they replace JP with.
But I wouldn't read too much into it.
But, you know, yet another indication that the Mariners may think that, you know,
Emerson
dude might make the team out of spring training next year.
I think they're going to give him an opportunity to do so.
But yeah,
I think this is just like,
hey,
reward for a good season.
And also,
yeah,
if JP goes down,
you're the best shortstop in the organization.
We're going to need that.
And so let's have you here and,
you know,
taking the reps and staying loose and,
you know,
staying warm and all that.
So I think that's what that's about.
Yeah.
So any of these other guys that I'm,
mention any of them that you think could have a shot of making the roster or you would like
to see make the roster?
Sure.
We'll talk about the roster over the next couple days.
I'm sure it'll be something we get into tomorrow and also kind of a official discussion
on Thursday or Friday, probably Thursday.
So, yeah, but obviously a guy like Samad Taylor makes some sense because he can steal bases.
He's a fast runner.
You don't need to give him at bats, but.
You could if you needed to, but you're just kind of looking for very niche roles here when you're filling out this roster.
So a guy who's just a pure pinch runner makes sense in the playoffs, and Samad Taylor is probably the best option for that.
You know, Ben Williamson is probably the most interesting one to me.
How seriously are the Mariners going to take defense?
Because the Mariners' infield defense at its best is mediocre.
Yeah.
And it's worse is tragically bad.
And do you want to have, you know, JP and Gino and Polanco all on the field in the eighth, ninth inning, trying to protect a one-run lead?
Yeah, yeah.
When you could have Williamson, you know, Williamson playing third and Rivas playing short and Cole Young playing second, and that is just a significantly better defensive infield.
So, yeah, Williamson's interesting because he's not going to get at bats over.
over a Eugenio, but he's significantly better defensively,
and third base is a premier defensive position.
So to be able to go to an elite glove at third base in late games,
you know, close late games is something that I think is going to be really interesting
because, again, you just don't want to be below average at three of your four infield spots,
trying to hold on to a one or two run lead in the eighth, ninth inning.
So he's an interesting one for me.
Yeah, I mean, like, if it has to come down to it between Cole Young and Ben Williamson,
and maybe we can get into this a little bit more on Thursday when we have our bigger,
overarching roster conversation, I think I'm taking Williamson.
Right. Part of this is how many pitchers do they want to carry, and the answer shouldn't be 13,
but we'll see what they decide to do.
We won't know the roster until Saturday morning.
Maybe Friday night if they're the early game,
but I think they're probably going to end up playing at noon
would be my guess.
But yeah, it's going to be a while,
but how many pitchers do they want to carry?
Because in theory, you could carry both of them
and have it not be a big deal.
But yeah, I do think that, you know,
the Williamson versus Young thing is going to be something.
And I would throw Taylor in there too
because, again, we're talking about very niche roles.
Yeah.
And so do they value the extra speed over, you know,
the defense like blah kind of depends on how they want to build this thing out so there's still so much
choices to make on that real quick like i feel like you have a i feel like we're having our
roster discussion but i'll just add one last thing there um on the speed thing i feel like you
have enough of it with like revos and raley etc that maybe you don't yeah that you should probably
more so value defense uh for that you know last role essentially on the bench so yeah so for me
I would go Williamson.
So of all those guys that we listed,
Williamson is the one that really stands out to me.
Michael Fulmer is another guy.
I just don't know how you get them on there.
Yeah.
Again, I think all these guys are here in case somebody gets hurt.
They have a,
there's a very specific,
this player or this player get hurt.
That's why this guy is on the taxi squad.
He would be the replacement.
I think the more interesting thing for me is that Gregory Santos,
not on it yeah not on it now it could be because you know he's technically on the 40 man but
some of these other guys are too so yeah yeah no that's not that's not why so i mean he's on the iL
or technically still in the il so that might be it but yeah i just that's weird to me and it
it doesn't seem to bode well for any kind of future in seattle for mr santos uh we'll see you know
who knows. But yeah, that's the one thing that stuck out to the, you know, two things that stuck out to me.
Colt Emerson, like that seems like just further indication that like, yeah, he might have a legit shot to make the team next year.
Yeah, spring training. And that they chose Michael Fulmer and Austin Kitchens and Casey Legamina over Gregory Santos.
Yeah. Yeah.
So, yeah, we'll see how either of those things work out.
All right. So we are going to talk a little bit about how.
different of an animal the playoffs are and kind of give you some examples of maybe some
weirder things to expect and how you know dan wilson might manage a situation or just you know
what you could see over the course of the next hopefully few weeks in just a moment but first
a reminder this episode of the locked on era's podcast is brought to you by neutroful you've probably
seen a million ads for hair growth products and thought yeah sure like that actually works and
I don't blame you because there are so many products out there, and it is so hard to know which ones are actually going to do anything.
That's why you should give Nutraful a closer look.
Nutraful is the number one dermatologist's recommended hair growth supplement brand,

That's right. You can hear the
postcast on the radio as well.
So this is only the second time
the mayor's been in the playoffs since 2001.
I don't know if you knew that or not.
You know, we haven't watched a lot of playoff baseball.
And I'm sure for some of you,
like once the mayor's season ends,
baseball is dead to you until the spring.
So you don't watch the playoffs.
you don't watch the World Series.
And for some of you, I'm sure, you know, you obviously love the Marys,
but you also just love Ball.
So you do watch the playoffs.
So you already kind of know what to expect here.
But Colby, I felt like it would be like this would be a good time to just kind of go over some of the different things and how like a game might be managed in the playoffs.
Just some examples of some different things you might see compared to the regular season.
Like how you use pitchers and stuff like that.
obviously like we already know that it seems like Bryce Miller is going to be going into the bullpen
so we could see Bryce Miller coming out, you know, in relief.
We could even see one of the guys who starts in this series eventually make a relief
appearance later on in the same series.
So what are some things that we should keep an eye out for that are different than the regular
season?
Yeah, it's a bit of a different animal.
Four days rest is no longer required for starting pitchers.
You'll see guys go on three days rest.
usually out of the pen for, you know, 50, 60 pitches.
But, yeah, you might see guys have to, you know, pitch on short rest,
which they may have never done before.
So a lot of that is just adrenaline and all of that.
So, yeah, be prepared to see pitchers come out of the bull,
or starters coming out of the bullpen at times,
not just because they were meant to be out of the bullpen for that series,
like Bryce Miller, but you might see George Kirby pitching game four out of the bullpen
or something, even if you started.
a game too. Who knows? So it's one of those things you do have to be on Red Alert. And basically
every player on your roster needs to be ready to play that night. There are no true days off.
There are no, like, if we can help it, we're not, no. Like, you have to use your guys. You can't
punt any games in general. Like, even if you're trailing, you kind of have to use your best guys,
like especially once you get to the ALDS format where you do have an off day after two.
games played. So there's really no reason not to use your, you know, your high leverage guys
when you're trailing four to two in the seventh inning of game two. There's no reason not to use
them. So you're going to see things like that. You're also probably going to see, well,
I don't want to say probably. I don't know how Dan's going to manage this, but it's not all that
unusual for a team if they do jump out to a decent lead pretty early in the game for them to do
mass subs pretty early on to try and get a hands team out there.
So if the Mariners, for example, if they jump up seven to nothing for some, you know,
in like the fourth inning, you might see A. E. E. Hennio sit down for the rest of the game because it's
about playing essentially pre-vent defense, right? You're trying to prevent them from scoring
seven. You feel pretty good about your odds. You'll probably see earlier pinch hitting situations
than you did in the past. Pinch running opportunities are going to happen earlier than you see in the past.
It's just kind of a sped-up game, right?
It's no longer a, you know, hey, we have 162 here.
Let's think long-term.
Let's stretch this out.
Let's, you know, play this smart.
It's very much about that moment and what you need for that at bat and for that pitch and all of that.
So it really is just a hyper focus on that one game.
So, yeah, you'll see earlier substitutions.
You'll see quicker hooks on starting pitchers.
You'll see, you know, some starters come out of the bullpen if they need to.
you'll see pitchers start or you know you'll see pitchers work in games they ordinarily wouldn't
but it really is just a instead of thinking about like hey how do I manage the series the calculus
changes to like I need to manage to win this game yeah because you there's no guarantee you know
like you can be down eight to one in the sixth and you're like why are using paul seewald why are you
know this and that it's like well because there's no guarantee that yeah we're going to win tomorrow
and we might win today, even if it is unlikely.
So it really is just this hyper fixation on that moment,
that, you know, that batter, that matchup.
And you make all your decisions based on that,
not worrying about what it's going to do three innings later.
You kind of can't afford to.
Yeah.
So yeah, you guys already kind of got a taste of this in 2022,
especially some of the, you know,
weirder pitching decisions where like George Kirby is closing out game two.
with a wild card and Robbie Ray
is coming in to face your word on
Alvarez. Even with Eric Swanson
in the bullpen who's been
against lefties and was your second best
reliever that year. Sometimes
it works. Sometimes
Sure. It is
every decision is
dissected. Every moment
is analyzed and
overanalyze and pretty much every pitch
at some point. Somebody would be like
that was the turning point of the game, that specific
pitch. You mean the
the the the three oh fastball down the middle that was made at three one count yeah if you had swung at that
they would have won the game like oh okay that's just part of that's just part of the beast you know
that's how it works so yeah every every decision is scrutinized every single one and and that's just
the way it works you know so here's one thing that here's one thing that won't change from the
regular season umpires still suck a lot very much so i mean i'm literally i'm watching this
Guardians Tigers game right now and there's been like five miss calls already that I've seen
while doing this podcast like just in the time that I've been able to look over here yeah yeah it is
crazy just like in the little bit of time that I've been able to actually like look over at my screen
there's been like five miss calls like very obvious calls that should have gone a different way so yeah
umpires still suck uh can't wait for the a BS system sure and look players are still going to make mistakes
but what you typically see is you see players like hustle a little bit extra like more and like when
they bobble ball they pick it up really there's no like nonchalant so the players have a sense of urgency
that they don't usually have in the regular season uh and you know i think the rule that every mariner
fan is probably pretty familiar with like the one actual tangible rule in the playoffs that changes
no free runner in extra innings yeah you got to earn it the old-fashioned way and let me tell you
something you sit through 18 innings of that in a zero zero game for seven hours when they
stop serving food and drink after the seventh inning still waiting on the still waiting on
the merits to score their first run in a playoff game at team mobile parks that's 2001 yeah
unfortunately yeah um can we get that out of the way like early on saturday
it would just like a nice hulio home run or something yeah yeah that'll be awesome we'll see who
they're who they're facing uh we'll know that hopefully not until thursday uh but uh i'm just gonna say
after watching Terrick Scoobble through these first like four
annings.
Yeah,
I feel pretty good about what I said yesterday that I'm rooting for the guardians here.
I would rather see the guardians.
Gavin's pretty good too.
He's just,
Gavin's pretty good.
But yeah.
So,
I mean,
that's really,
that's the only rule change,
you know,
is the no free runner.
But yeah,
you'll see an over emphasis on small ball at the worst possible times.
You'll see starters going on short.
at rest. You'll see starters coming out of the bullpen. You'll see, you know, you'll see early
matchup decisions made. And, you know, you might see a pinch hitting decision made in the fourth
inning that you would have never seen. You might pull Logan Gilbert in the third inning when he's up
two to one because he's throwing 73 pitches and there's runners on the corners with two outs. You might just
have to make that call, you know, because you can't worry about how you're going to cover innings
tomorrow. You have to win the game today. And so it's just one of those things. Everything's hyper-focused.
You know, it's probably not too early to do most things if it gives you a matchup advantage.
So, yeah, it's just, everything's just jumped up a notch and it is, it is crazy.
And it is nauseating.
It would be great if the Mariners could, you know, win a game, like, or get up in a game, like, you know, six to nothing after the second inning.
But even then, every out is, is precious.
and every out you can get.
It really is a countdown to 27 outs.
Like every out is huge.
Every run is huge.
You know how you felt during the Astros series?
That's how you're going to feel every single game from here on out.
Right.
And again, the nice thing there is that the Mariners have already played in a playoff series this year.
Yeah.
They have a playoff experience this year, despite it being, you know, over a week ago now, 10 days ago,
they still played in a playoff series in front of a hostile crowd and they played very well.
Yeah, one of those games being a primetime game on national television and all that.
Like, yeah, you know, so they played very well.
And so that that is kind of the warm up act to the actual playoffs.
But yeah, so that's good.
This is, team has a lot of playoff experience on the roster.
You know, pretty good amount already as well.
some of it with the Mariners, some of it other places.
So, yeah, I don't think the moment will be too big for them, but, you know, we'll see how it all plays out.
But it's just, it's baseball.
It's regular season baseball on steroids.
It's like just all that pressure to pull the right levers and make the right decisions and play clean baseball and don't do anything stupid.
It's all there for the players and the manager.
And we just kind of have to sit back and hope that they make the right decision.
So the tigers and guardians are underway as we speak, but we're going to talk a little bit about what we're watching for in this series.
Again, the Mariners are going to play the winner of this series starting on Saturday.
Go over that in just a moment.
But first a reminder of this episode of the Locktime Airs podcast is brought to you by Fandual.

And you're listening to the Locked-Omarin's podcast.
So as we are talking right now, it is the top.
of the fifth in game one between the tigers and the guardians one to one right now.
Chaos has already ensued.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Stephen Vote clearly took some of the basketball in Seattle and brought it with them to Cleveland.
Yeah.
They're a fascinating club because, again, on paper, like I said yesterday, like they've, to me,
they have very clearly overachieved.
I would much rather play them, but, you know, you watch them play.
It just feels like everything goes their way at some point.
It's very reminiscent of last year's Tigers team where it's just like you look at the
roster and you're like, it's got some players,
but this is not a good team.
And then they just keep on winning and winning.
You're like, well, I mean, at some point, you know, they are who they are.
And so.
Yeah.
Now eventually things ran out for the Tigers.
That's also kind of my hope is that just things eventually run out for the Guardians.
I mean, Detroit won a series last year.
and they made it interesting, but before they ultimately lost.
So, you know, there does seem to be an expiration date on these type of teams.
But, you know, Cleveland's got, I mean, if you're a Guardians player or a fan even,
you just got to kind of be feeling like, you know, fate is on your side with the number of things that go your way for the last month.
So we'll see how it goes.
But right now it's one to one in the fifth as we're recording this.
Pretty good pitching matchup.
you know both of the runs kind of fluky yeah so it's it's playoff baseball it's exactly what you
want and hobby or bias is the one having the best at bats on the day go figure so what are we
watching for in this series i mean first and foremost i want this game to go or i want the series to
go to three games yes so whoever loses today i'm rooting for tomorrow
so they have to play on thursday and whoever wins that series only gets one day off
instead of two.
Yes.
I think it would be ideal if, you know,
Cade Smith or Will Vest, you know,
the big high leverage arms in these bullpins,
if they pitched in all three of these games,
even with the day off,
that would be very nice as well.
Not that they wouldn't be available,
but that they might be a little less effective on Saturday.
Another thing, I mean, like,
could Scoobill pitch in game three if they need them to,
not start, but like.
Yeah, give them an inning or two.
Yeah.
And I might push him to game two or three.
Yeah, the following series.
Yep.
Because basically, if you could push Scoobol to game two or three,
he's probably only making one start in that series.
Now he might also make like relief appearances,
or at least a relief appearance.
Which wouldn't matter if you're up.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I mean, in this series,
I think you're just, there's not really much to, you know, look for,
except you want this to be a long, as long as a series as possible, it'd be great if all these games go into extras.
That'd be amazing.
Yeah.
But, yeah, I mean, that's really what you're looking for is you just want the series to go deep.
You want these arms to be used, you know, partially because they have to, and that's just kind of the way it is.
But yeah, you're really hoping for a three-game series.
I think you should be rooting for a three-game series more so.
than either of these specific teams
winning in general.
Like, again, you might want
Cleveland, you might want Detroit, I don't really care either way.
But I think you want
one of these two teams on three days
or with only one day off rather than
either of these teams
win two days off.
So it really is just about hopefully a long series.
Hopefully the bullpen has to cover
four or five innings
in one of these games. Hopefully game three.
They have to cover four or five innings,
maybe six innings.
because again, even though those players aren't going to be unavailable for game one,
they might be less effective if they've thrown, you know,
three of the last four days.
We know that's the thing with Moodios.
So the thing with a lot of relievers.
So yeah, you're just hoping for lots of pitching.
You're hoping for long games.
You're hoping for maybe even like an emotionally draining series.
Like you just want these guys to have because again, eventually you run out of adrenaline.
It just kind of the roller coaster ride of especially what Cleveland's gone through.
At some point, you're just going to run out of momentum and you're just going to run out of adrenaline and you're just going to crash down to your talent level.
So, yeah, you're just looking for a nice long series.
You want these guys to throw as many pitches as they can.
And, you know, you want, I mean, like, ideally, it'd be nice if, like, Jose Ramirez had a terrible series, I guess, so that you could be,
like, oh, he's cold, which not really a thing.
Like, there's just not a lot to worry.
It's a three-game series.
Like, there's only so much that can go right for you as a team with the buy.
Yeah.
So you're just hoping for a three-game series.
I think it's really the only thing you can hope for and realistically get.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Take this thing to three games and then, hey, maybe game three goes like 18.
I don't know.
That'd be great.
Like that would ever happen.
Yeah.
By the way, Cleveland played a 15 inning game.
game in the 2022 playoffs that was also one to nothing so crazy yeah uh i believe oscar gonzalez
had a solo home run off of corey cluber of the raise to win that game one to nothing in 15
innings so these things do happen and if if like the deciding game goes 15 innings that'd be
great i mean that'd be incredible for the mariners so you're just looking forward the most exhausted
path for either of these teams to get to Seattle.
So yeah, that's really what you're rooting for.
Nice long, high leverage games that, you know, have just like no margin of air from
pitch one until the very last day, no days off, no pitches off.
Like, that's what you want.
You want a mentally drain team coming to your ballpark for game one and two,
where you'll be well rested.
But, you know, you don't always get what you want.
But that's what I'm rooting for, certainly.
talking about just like playoff atmosphere is there a ballpark you would prefer the marries go to on the road than the other like would you rather see them go to camerica than progressive vice versa
probably rather see them go to camerica yeah than progressive just because again while like the adrenaline wears down for the players as time goes on for the fans it doesn't and again if you're playing a uh guardians team that is like
We're the team of destiny and blah, blah, blah.
The fans are going to be into it every pitch.
Well, and as soon as they get an infield single or like an error happens,
they're going to get really into it.
And you know, they're going scuba, scuba.
You know, they're trying to get into the pitch of the head.
They're doing everything to be a part of this.
I feel like also Detroit's fan.
Like they'll bring it, I'm sure.
But like Detroit's fan base has just had an entire month where they've just been like,
here they go, here they go.
That's creeping into the back of their minds, you know, as they're playing use.
So I'd rather face Comerica or rather go to Comerica.
I think Progressive Field is nicer than Comerica.
And I think that it's probably a better fit for the Mariners, roster-wise, offensively.
But just because of the atmosphere that I think there would be,
I'd rather go to Detroit than I would to Cleveland right now.
Yeah. Well, that's going to do it for our show.
