So let's kick off the NL West here with a very easy one with a very short discussion, Colorado Rockies.
We already talked about them on Mailbag Monday.
There is nothing here.
This is a barren wasteland of a roster.
Terrible.
Absolutely terrible.
Yeah.
Basically, it's a short conversation.
Hey, you guys willing to trade Bretton Doyle?
Nope.
Okay.
Yep.
There's nothing else.
There's nothing else.
I like Brent and Doyle, obviously.
He's a really good player, but they're not trading him.
So I don't want Ryan McMahon.
I don't want Brendan Rogers.
I don't want Ezekiel Tovar.
I don't want any of their pitchers.
I mean, Jake Bird and Justin Lawrence.
shown some pretty interesting stuff,
but they've never put it together.
I mean, if you want to kick the tires on either of those guys,
fine.
That's really it here.
There's just nothing.
So, yeah, moving on.
Yeah.
Next up, again, we're doing this in reverse order of the NOS standings.
So the Giants with a new GM Buster Posey at the helm.
Obviously, this is a team the mayors have traded with a lot.
over the last few years.
Maybe that changes with a new GM at the home for the Giants,
but there's quite a few options here that are pretty interesting for the mirrors.
The name that really stands out here is Lamont Wade Jr.,
who made my top five trade targets list a couple weeks ago.
I believe he was number four on that list.
Wade's got a year left, but the issue with him is, I mean, one,
after he got hurt this year, he was bad for about four months.
Second of all, his offensive profile doesn't really fit well at first base.
It's more contact over power.
He has a couple of seasons with, I believe, 17 and 18 home runs respectively in two of the last four years.
But and the other two years of that four year period, he has eight each.
So the idea here is essentially a left-handed version of what Justin Turner is now.
just with more walks
because Lamont Wade is elite in terms of taking walks
only Juan Soto and Aaron Judge
had a higher walk percentage this year
than Lamont Wade
and it shouldn't cost a ton
because again we're talking about a first base
DH who doesn't hit for a ton of power
who only has a year left
and by the way he's only projected
to make about $4.7 million dollars in arbitration
from MLB trade rumors.com
Yeah, it's, you know, it's kind of a spot on the roster that's already filled by Luke Rayleigh, so it's really not a perfect fit, a guy who really should only be facing righties.
Wade's been fine against lefties in his career, but he's gotten so few opportunities.
It's kind of fair to ask, is that for a reason?
Is it because the Giants know that he's going to struggle against left-handed pitching, or is it just he can hit lefties?
They just never gave him the shot, I don't know.
But he's certainly interesting.
I think a guy like Tyler Rogers would be pretty interesting.
He's the submariner.
Doesn't throw hard, doesn't strike guys out,
gets a ton of ground balls,
gives up soft contact,
doesn't walk anybody.
It's been just a really solid reliever over the last few years.
You only get him for a year,
but he's going to make $5.5 million, give or take.
So that's pretty pricey for a mariner's reliever.
But he's interesting.
They want to take a shot on Camillo Duval,
who really struggled this year,
got sent down for a hot minute there.
He's set to make 4.6.
So again, pricey reliever, you get him for three years,
and he does have high leverage,
plenty of high leverage experience and really good stuff.
So that's an interesting guy.
Also, maybe Mike Ustrimski.
But the outfield mix is a little more.
It's dependent on where is Luke Rayleigh playing primarily?
Right.
Because again, Eustrinsky.
Which also a play,
also applies to the Lamont Wade discussion.
Right. So Rayleigh is kind of the key here.
Is Rayleigh the primary first baseman?
Then Yostrimski is the fourth outfielder, maybe even the strong side platoon with Robles.
If he takes a big step back this year, he makes sense.
But he's making close to $10 million and you only get him for a year.
But that also means it's probably not going to cost you a ton in trade.
He's a pretty good player, but he's certainly not a star that is going to cost you a ton.
So there are some guys on this roster, sure.
I would love it if you could find a way to pry Ryan Walker from them,
but that's not going to happen.
But he's one of my favorite pitchers.
Eric Miller as well.
Yeah.
But so, you know, every team kind of has those guys where you're like,
well, if they're ruling to trade this guy, I'd be really interested.
Even the Rockies, they have Brent Doyle.
But they're probably not.
And so just based on like who could be, who could be available,
like better than a 25% chance they're available,
the Giants actually have quite a few.
It's a handful,
which is more than most of the teams we've talked about so far.
Yeah.
So we have the Arizona Diamondbacks, the San Diego Padres,
and the Los Angeles Dodgers still to go.
Coming up here in just a moment.
But first, a reminder,

And you're listening to the Lockdown Marrars podcast.
We are looking at the National League West for potential trade targets for the Marys.
We just looked at the Rockies who have nothing.
And the Giants who have a couple of interesting pieces, mostly in the bullpen,
but also Lamont Wade, Mikey Schremski, as we talked about.
Now let's go to the team that finished in third in the NL West.
this year. That's the Arizona Diamondbacks
who the Mayors have a very
interesting trade history
with. In the last couple
trades, they've been selling pieces
to the Diamondbacks.
Maybe this time their next
trade with one another
involves the mayor's buying something from them.
Yeah. Arizona is
interesting, but honestly, the two
pieces offensively that make the most sense
might just be free agents.
They both have club options.
are, uh, yeah, I think they're both club options.
Jock Peterson, who's obviously one of them, might be a mutual option, but Peterson, again,
really a DH only, uh, doesn't hit lefties at all.
So not an ideal player.
Andy's going to make $14 million.
That could eat up.
That's a mutual option.
Yeah, that could eat up like $14, like $14,000, like 30, 40, 50% of what you have to
spend.
And he's a platoon bat, a pure platoon bat, who should only be DH.
He shouldn't be in the outfield.
So as good as he was this last year,
you know,
do you want to spend $14 million on a DH only
who can't play 30% of the games?
I mean,
beggars can't be choosers,
but it's not an automatic yes.
The other guy on this team,
Eh, Eugenio Suarez.
Makes sense.
He does.
A $15 million team option.
If they want to pick that up,
I don't know.
Seems like maybe they would
after the second half he had.
But there's also some red flags with Gino,
despite the numbers,
how they look at the end of the year.
Dude was so bad, he got benched in like early July.
So, you know, the fact that he was god-awful for two and a half months,
and then one of the best hitters in baseball for two and a half months at 33, 34 years old,
when we know that there's a decline in bat speed,
it makes them a very tricky player to, you know, come to some kind of,
kind of understanding on.
And so,
and again,
at $15 million,
that's going to eat up probably at best,
like best case scenario,
the Mariners might spend $30 million this winter.
So you give 15 to Gino,
like,
you know,
that's quite,
and you're going to have to give a pretty decent prospect to get them too.
So,
uh,
Gino is,
is interesting.
He's a fit,
uh,
certainly.
Uh,
but,
uh,
there's a lot of questions around,
surrounding those two guys.
One of them is,
is,
Jack Peterson is not so much a performance issue.
It's just a really tough fit on the roster.
Gino is a performance question because of the age and the terrible first half and all that stuff.
Strikeout rate was still really high, but still a good defender.
Still going to hit some homers.
And you know he works in your clubhouse.
So those two guys stood out right away, but they might both be free agents anyway.
So, you know.
Yeah.
I mean, looking at the roster,
Jack McCarthy is a guy that stands out
who was rumored to be in trade talks.
There was a rumor about the Phillies looking at him.
But yeah, there isn't a ton here that I'm like,
because one, it's like, well, what do the Diamondbacks want to do?
I assume they still want to compete, right?
They just kind of want to retool and go after it again.
I mean, they were right on the doorstep of making the play.
They were alive until the final game between the Mets and the Braves.
So I can't foresee them trading off significant major league talent.
Pitching was such an issue for them this year that I assume they're going to go pretty hard after pitching.
So maybe Luis Castillo plays a role here.
Maybe.
But does Castillo want to go to Arizona?
There's so many questions with that.
And it's like, what are you getting back for Castillo from this team?
Plus, how invested is ownership going to be again?
Last winter, they spent.
They went to the World Series and they spent and they chased it again.
They didn't make the playoffs this year.
Yeah.
Montgomery blew up in their face.
Yep.
So much so their owner literally said, like, I made a mistake.
Right.
Basically through Montgomery under the bus.
We'll see Montgomery has an option.
So if he declines that option, right.
If he declines that option, then they're probably okay.
if he accepts it, you know, they're going to be one of the,
they're going to enter this, this winter with one of the higher payrolls,
uh, committed to 2025.
So do they want to carry that?
I don't know.
Uh,
but if they do end up needing pitching,
Castillo could make sense.
Uh,
if you're Seattle,
you probably want to pitch your back because you don't want to trust Evans,
but Merrill Kelly,
uh,
is,
is an interesting arm here.
Um,
I would say,
you know,
Paven Smith,
you guys remember the,
the,
September he had, including the three home run game against the Astros.
He was fantastic, but he's arb eligible.
And he's really only been good for one month in his entire career,
former first-round pick.
It's the guy Jerry likes to chase.
Pretty Dom-Cand-Zone-like.
So you may just look at him and be like, we have that guy at home.
And his name's Dominic Anzone.
And he might be right.
But he's only going to make $1.1 million this year.
So, you know, there are some,
some players here.
You can tell Marte would be an absolute journey.
Like he's kind of the perfect player for you.
Like that's the guy you need.
Again.
What are the odds?
Yeah.
I mean,
unless you're giving up Logan Gilbert and then at that point,
did you really get better?
Depends on who you replace Logan Gilbert with.
So,
yeah,
I mean,
there's always bullpen arms who are pretty interesting in these things.
Yeah.
Kevin Gehle.
Yeah.
AJ Puck.
Yep.
Yep.
Those two guys stand out.
And then there's a couple of the bats, like we mentioned.
So there's three or four guys here.
It's just like arguably the best player like fit in this roster that is actually like affordable to ownership is Katel Marte, maybe in all of the league.
And it's just not going to be available for anything realistic.
So Arizona, there's definitely some pieces there.
but the big one, the big one is unfortunately unattainable.
We assume.
Yeah, I mean, any interest in Perdelmo?
Would they even trade Pardelmo?
No.
I mean, I don't hate the idea, but like, no.
Yeah.
So, yeah, not a lot here with the Diamondbacks,
mostly because, again, they're going to try and compete.
And they probably also have some payroll issues.
Right.
I mean, Christian Walker is a free agent.
And like I said, Jock Peterson and Gino Smith could both.
Gino Smith.
Gino, Smith.
Gino,
best quarterback in the NFL, Gino, Smith, that is.
NVGeno, baby.
That's right.
But, yeah, I'm all over the place right now.
Swares.
Yes, thank you.
Suarez and Peterson might be free agents.
So if they both opt out or they're both free agents,
not really a ton that Arizona is going to have.
If they both opt in, maybe.
But I think Peterson's too much of a, too much of a, like,
he's too much of a headache on the roster because he can only D.H.
And you can only face right-handed pitching.
I don't think the mayors are going to want to, you know,
get in that, put themselves in that position.
And then Suarez, obviously, who's the real Gino?
First half, Gino, because last year the Mariners clearly thought that first half Gino was
the real Gino.
And so, yeah, Arizona, some interesting names, but in a couple weeks, there could be
zero names that make much sense for Seattle.
Yeah.
So are we going to go another year of talking about Jake Cronowarth?
You know it.
Because that's really the only guy that stands out here for me, offensively speaking,
from the Padres, because again, this is another team that's going to compete, at least in theory.
The Padres have a.
separate issue, though.
That makes them very difficult to talk about.
Yeah.
Unfortunately, their owner passed away this last year.
And before that, he did what we want all owners to do.
He believed in his franchise.
He wanted to give his city a World Series championship.
So he went all in, right?
He signed Zander Bogarts.
He gave the huge extension to Tatis.
He signed Mani Machado.
You know, he went all.
He gave.
you Darvish that ridiculous contract.
Like he went all in.
Business-wise, it didn't end up looking,
it didn't end up working that well.
Baseball-wise, it worked great.
Business-wise, they had to take out loans to try and cover.
Major League Baseball did not like that whatsoever.
And it essentially sounds like the Padres are more or less going to be forced
to lower their payroll next year as kind of a quasi-punishment for taking out loans.
So yeah, it's a really weird situation.
I don't even quite grasp it all the way, but there is the possibility that the Padres are going to have to dump some significant salary here to get back in the black operating expenses and all that stuff.
So it's a little bit up in the air how much they're going to have to cut back, if at all.
But again, they spent a lot of money over the last few years in an attempt to win the World Series.
I don't think that they're going to just blow it up and do all that.
But I think they are going to try and look to move some of their mid-tier contracts
because like you're not moving Manning and Machado's contract.
No, you're not doing that.
You're not moving Fernando Tatis.
You could, but you're not going to do that.
So Luis Arise, someone you've liked in the past.
I'm out.
Because of the money?
Because it's $14 million for a slap hitter who has a three-per-
percent walk rate. No power, no defense, no base running. I'm out.
This team had a really good bullpen this year though. Anyone in there that you think is obtainable?
Suarez could be because he's one of those guys making money. And so he's a guy who could be made
available simply because they don't want to pay him. He's making like eight, nine million bucks,
a high leverage situation there. So he makes some sense. Jason.
Adam is a nice reliever, but I think he's still going to be making not enough money that the
Padres will just bring him back.
Sure.
But yeah, I think Suarez is probably the guy that they would look at moving because he's the
guy making the most money.
But yeah, I mean, it's the Padres are really tough to kind of, they're pretty hard to nail
down because we don't know what their financial situation is.
It's different than all the other teams when we talk about like, oh, this team.
seems probably not going to spend.
It's because they have a terrible owner.
The Padres might not be spending or the Padres might be cutting payroll because their owner was too aggressive.
Like that's the thing.
But yeah, so the Padres are really tough.
But there are a few guys here.
It's just a lot of the guys, when you look at their roster this year, that makes sense for the Mariners.
They're free agents.
Hassan, Kim, jerks and pro far, et cetera.
So, yeah, there's some guys.
But, you know, it's tough.
but I do think Croninworth is the guy we should watch.
I really like,
I really like Jay Cronaward still,
particularly at second base.
Yeah, it's just $11 million a year
all the way through 2030.
That's not a lot of money,
but are the mayor is willing to take on a contract
that runs through 2030 for over $10 million?
Probably not.
Probably not.
But if they are,
Cronerworth at second base is a three and a half one player.
I firmly believe that.
So, yeah, I really like Cronworth, that idea.
But again, money obviously a factor here.
But that's the guy.
Like, when I'm targeting one guy who's on the Padres roster this winter, it's probably Croninworth.
He'd be my go-to.
All right.
So we're going to take a look at the National League champion, Los Angeles Dodgers.
But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown-Ares podcast is brought to you by Fandul.
NFL fans can start the season with a big return on Fandul.

You get started with $200 in bonus bets.
Yeah, you heard that right.
$200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet.
That's fandul.com.
And you're listening to the Lockdown Merritt podcast.
We are looking at the National League West for potential trade targets for the
Marrars and that hasn't gone particularly well so far because a lot of these teams they are
competing and probably not going to be willing to trade a ton of their major league talent right and
that's what we're ultimately aiming to identify here right it's major league talent that's going
to help the Mariners right away in theory so we've gone over the Padres we've gone over the
diamondbacks the Giants and the Rockies so that leaves the National League champion Los
Angeles Dodgers.
We have pretty much exclusively talked about this team within the context of trading
Luis Castillo.
Yeah.
Because still makes sense.
In theory, that should be one of the teams that he would be willing to waive as no trade
clause for, right?
You would think.
Great team might be coming off of a World Series, at least a World Series appearance.
Yeah.
Right.
And they obviously need pitching because Kershaw is a free agent.
He might retire.
higher.
Flaherty is going to be a free agent.
Bueller's going to be a free agent.
And yeah, they didn't have a great run of health in that rotation this year whatsoever.
Haven't for the last couple.
And you know who's posted outside of like the last few weeks of the season this year?
Rather consistently, he's Castillo.
So, yeah.
All right.
So outside of Castillo deal, though, and maybe we,
we can talk about that a little bit and who you would maybe target in a Castillo deal.
But outside of that, if you're just straight up just trying to trade for guys off of the Dodgers roster,
who do you think is obtainable?
And who do you have interest in?
Yeah, there's some guys in the bullpen.
The Dodgers, however, obviously aren't afraid to spend money.
So you're not really going to get salary dumps here.
You're going to have to give up assets.
But I'm still.
Maybe a little bit to get tax compliant?
Sure.
A little.
but you're still going to have to give up something.
I'm still really intrigued by Dustin May,
if you can put it all together,
and especially that stuff coming out of the bullpen.
I think the Mariners,
now it's not like the Dodgers can't develop pitching.
So it's not like, oh, you know, they're the white socks.
Anybody, like they don't develop at all.
You can fix that guy, no problem.
But Dustin May would be a guy pretty interested in.
You only get them for a year, though.
So, you know, you don't have a lot of time.
And if he gets hurt or hurt,
again. I should say pretty much he wasted that asset. Michael Kopeck, a guy who I wanted at the
deadline. Hey, turns out the Dodgers know how to fix him. Like, look at that. Imagine that.
Cool. Turns out the white socks were the problem. Who would have guessed? Who would have guessed?
But he's pretty interesting. Bruce Dahl Gratterol?
Bruce R. Gatorel. Heavy, heavy sinker. Really good stuff. Still hasn't quite popped yet.
You know, there's more there. I think he might be hurt if I'm remembering.
bring correctly. Yeah, he is. Shoulder inflammation. Right. So it's a little dicey, the shoulder,
not what you want to hear, but you do get him for two years. So it's not a rental there.
You know, same goes for Tony Gonsolin, but again, there's just been so many injuries there. It's,
it's tough to trust that guy. I think if you're getting away from the pitching staff a little
bit here, I do think that Gavin Lucks still makes some sense. There's the possibility that the
Mariners look at him and say like we we have the tweak we can really get him to
pop off because he does and he has had stretches where he's been a very good player
he's just been way too inconsistent hasn't really taken off the way that the
Dodgers would like you know they have Tommy admin now they have or they have
mooky bats they still have some guys who can play that middle infield spot also
pretty good farm system on top of it and the resources to go replace him so I
do think that Gavin Lux is a guy who makes a lot of sense here.
Dark Horse, I'll throw him out there.
I don't know if he'll get traded this winter or not, but Max Muncie is a guy that I think
fits pretty well in Seattle.
Can play first,
can play third.
He's going to strike out.
Like,
that's what he does,
but he's going to walk and he's going to hit home runs.
Like,
he's pretty much a three-true outcome type of player.
But he gives you pretty quality upbats.
Again,
he's got power.
That'll play at T-Mobile.
And he does have experience at third base.
And then finally, like probably not available, but in a specific deal where maybe you're giving up Luis Castillo, I think Pahez, the outfielder makes a little bit of sense here too.
Again, that one's probably strictly if you're trading a Castillo type to the Dodgers.
But who knows, maybe there's a swap of young players that makes sense.
I don't know.
Matt Brash for Andy Pahas or whatever it is, right?
So, yeah, Lux Pahez, Muncie offensively.
And then, yeah, the arms that I mentioned, at least in terms of guys who are on the major league roster right now.
You and I have already talked about this a little bit, but if he did trade them, Luis Castillo, would they be willing to move Bobby Miller in that deal?
Obviously, had an amazing rookie year, but sophomore slump in a major way this year ended up getting sent down.
Bobby Miller, man.
One of the best changeups in Major League Baseball, maybe the best.
Yeah.
Just one of the hardest throwers, too.
Just no fastball value.
Fastball gets torched.
So interesting fit there.
Yeah, prospect-wise, because he can impact the Mariners pretty much right away,
I'll throw Dalton rushing out there as well.
The Dodgers do have catcher depth.
Will Smith is locked in for the next 10 years.
He's not going anywhere.
The Dodgers also have.
have two or three talented catchers behind rushing who could make it to the big leagues pretty quick.
So again, rushing is probably a guy that if they do go out there and they do put them out there,
they're looking for a top of the rotation type of arm.
Do they think Castillo's that guy?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
I don't know.
But that's probably where the mayors would start if they did, in fact, entertain a Castillo
trade.
Like, hey, what about Dalton rushing?
And if you're saying why would the Mariners want Dalton rushing, they have Cal Raleigh?
rushing also plays in the outfield,
and he's just a good hitter.
And not a terrible catcher.
Oh, by the way,
Cal Raleigh doesn't need to catch 135 games again.
So, yeah, give Dalton rushing,
70 starts behind the play, give Cal Raleigh, you know, 90,
and then ask Cal the DH 50 times a year and try and save those knees for the next couple.
So you can absolutely make it work.
But, yeah, the Dodgers have some guys,
but because both teams are trying to compete,
not the easiest thing to line up on,
but the Dodgers are creative.
They are willing to trade guys off their major league roster.
And there are, you know, like we just named half a dozen to eight guys
that do make a good deal of sense for Seattle.
Sure, sure.
So of all the guys that we talked about over the course of this episode,
who is your favorite or at least like the best fit?
Crown Worth.
Kronworth.
I think for me, it's Wade, even though, again, there's some issues there that we, you know, we talked about.
But again, it's one year.
I don't think he's going to cost a ton in terms of trade return.
And it's $4.7 million in arbitration.
Yeah.
It's a good bank for your buck.
I just don't love DH-only types with platoon splits.
Now, again, you have to make the decision on Wade, whether you think he hasn't gotten
opportunities against lefties because he can't hit them or if the giants had just miscalculated
and assume that he can't hit lefties yeah i mean the career numbers against lefties are
it's bad they're really bad but last two years obviously in limited opportunities it's been fine
100 w rc plus in 2023 143 w rc plus this year right i think that's over the course of like a combined
150-ish plate appearances.
Can't guys get better at hitting same-handed pitching as they get older?
Yes, they can.
Does it usually happen?
Not really, but it can.
But also, too, you have Luke Rayleigh, who's kind of in a similar spot.
Really, should only hit against Rydes.
But Rayleigh can at least, you know, play some outfield defense and play some first base.
And he can run a little bit, good athlete.
So, yeah, Wade makes sense.
just don't know how many of these you know strong side platoon guys you really want to
one ross or particularly ones who are not athletic enough to play anywhere about first base or
dh so yeah could you have another one sure would it be ideal to have another one no no
not really so yeah there are some uh the mariners are going to have to at some point they're
going to have to just take a shot on something.
Yeah.
This is probably not the division to shop in, though.
No, I think oddly enough, the American League will offer more opportunities to the Mariners
than the National League.
But yeah, again, focusing on major league talent.
All 30 teams, all 29 other teams have like a AAA reliever or, you know, a quad A infielder
that would be like, oh, that would be a.
nice a lot.
Austin Chitton.
So we're focused on major leaguers right now.
Sure.
Yeah.
So we're going to dive into the American League next week, Wednesday through Friday.
We'll have Mailbag Monday.
