We're going to do Diamond Quiz again today
Episode 7 of Diamond Quiz
Next episode will be our episode of Champions
So the winner of this game
will go on to face Jason Hernandez and A.J. Andrews in the next episode of Champions,
which I just said already. The first person vying for the right to do that is one of the co-hosts of Locked-on Rays.
He is Ulysses Sambrano. Welcome to Diamond Quiz, Ulysses.
Hey, D.C., thank you for having me.
Absolutely. It's a pleasure to have you here. Ready to go?
Let's do it.
Ready to show your stuff?
Let's go.
All right. Locked-on Padres host, Javi Reyes, is also with us.
Hobby, how are you doing today?
That was an excellent enunciation of my name that I really appreciate it.
I'm doing great, man.
I'm thrilled to be here before the call.
I know I sounded like I was half dead,
but do not fear I am back.
I had a glass of water.
I'm good now.
You're one of those guys who just springs to life
once the mic starts rolling, right?
Yeah, I'm just, man, and my competitive juices
are just flowing throughout through me and everything.
I'm ready to rock, man.
Even though I'm quite bad at trivia, but still, I'm ready to rock.
Oh, having fun's the most important thing.
That's what's...
And you're here to do that.
Yes?
Hey, if I get no questions wrong, I hope to make up with it, make up for it with my insurmountable
amount of energy that I have consistently on every podcast.
All right.
That's what I'm hoping for.
That's the strategy you're going with today.
Hopefully it will work, but I do hope you get some questions right as well.
I do think you, I think you will.
You might underestimate yourself.
Thirdly, from Locked on Red Sox, we have a Gabrielle Star here.
Gabrielle, how are you doing?
I'm great.
I'm just happy to be here doing trivia with some of my favorite
fellow host and I'm very jealous of Javi's ability to just
bounce back from the dead. I think that's like a
that's something you lose as you get older.
It's the performer gene. The performer gene, he's got that. I want to point out
Gabrielle and Ulysses. I've done trivia against Ulysses
and I've done trivia against Gabriel also and Gabrielle beat me. So
you're not going to get any questions right now. I'm kidding.
Categories for a round one ladies and
gentlemen are the Roaring
20s, baseball
math, colorful
characters, all-star game
miscellania, and
what was, was not
was, but almost was.
A contestant in control chooses
a category. I'll ask a question in that category.
Person who gets it right can choose
the same category for bigger point totals or
move to a different one. That's how the game
works. We drew names to see who would start before.
Gabrielle, you're in control. Let's get going.
Wait, wait, wait. We're not going to just address the
crazy naming of that last category.
What the heck?
We're all just fine with that.
What the heck is it?
I'm looking at it right now.
What was?
Was not was, but almost what.
Yeah, say that five times fast.
If somebody can say that five times fat.
I'll give them $10.
Yeah.
If you want to choose that category, just say what was or whatever.
You don't have to say the whole thing.
Okay, okay, okay.
This goes into our answer.
Point deducting to the category.
I think I'm going to go with colorful characters.
because I like the alliteration on that one.
All right.
Colorful characters, these are players with colors in their names.
Which formerly long-haired Rockies pitcher got his hair cut in 2017 for charity was the third overall pick in the 2013 draft?
And that is Javi.
John Gray.
That is correct, sir.
For five, yes, you got it.
And you said you weren't going to get anything right.
Five points.
I threw you all off.
It was a fake out.
You're sandbagging, aren't you?
Javier, you're on the board with five points.
Choose another category, please.
Let's go with All-Star Game Miscellaneous.
All-Star Game Miscellaneous for five points.
Which prolific Hall of Fame
or hit the very first home run in an All-Star game,
doing so in the third inning in 1933.
I see somebody typing, not necessarily buzzing in.
Ulysses is in there.
Joe DiMaggio?
No, sir, not Joe DiMaggio.
Somebody else, please.
First home run in All-Star Game competition.
Not Joe DiMaggio.
Gabrielle's in there.
1933.
I'm going to guess Lou Gehrig.
Lou Gehrig's incorrect.
Hobby, do you have a guess?
I do not.
I'm not going to lie.
I do not.
That is Babe Ruth.
Oh, that was my second guess.
That's all right.
Babe Ruth, first home run in an all-star game.
Yep.
Let's see.
Javi's in control.
Let's do baseball math.
Baseball math.
Follow along with me on this one, guys.
take George Brett's career batting average,
add Frank Thomas's slugging percentage,
subtract Wade Boggs on base,
divide by Omar Viscale's OPS,
then multiply by the number of times
Kirk Gibson was an all-star.
Good Lord.
What in the flying bejesus did you just say?
What?
I just failed sixth grade math all over again, hearing them.
This is why I always.
saying down with math, everybody. This is why I'm always saying.
Time is up on that one.
Kurt Gibson was never an all-star, so the answer is zero.
Oh, my God. I was literally going to say, what if it's zero?
Yeah, so, and that's what I, there was no way that was a real question at face value.
Yeah. Oh, my God. I should have just buzzed in and said zero to be a troll.
You would have gotten five points out of it.
Yeah. All right, Hove, you're still in control. Let's see. Yep, you're so in control. Go for it.
I swear the other questions...
Having drunk with power.
The other questions in baseball math,
I swear, are more straightforward than that.
Okay.
Let's try what was.
What was, was not was, but almost was.
There are, you know, a few players who, you know,
tried baseball careers before they went on to careers in other sports.
There's a question about category, about three of them.
Which Seattle Seahawks quarterback spent two years as a second baseman
in the Rockies?
That is Ulysses.
Dangerous, Russ Wilson?
That is correct.
He spent two years in the Rockies chain of the second baseman
before winning a Super Bowl in 2014 with those Seahawks.
You're on the board, sir, with five points.
Javi also five, Gabrielle, yet to score.
Ulysses is now in control.
Let's go with baseball math.
Baseball math.
Second question in that category now for 10 points.
Subtract Babe Ruth's total home run total from Hank Arons.
This is a great question.
This is a great...
Ulysses isn't there.
Ulysses.
What is...
42?
Oh, no.
No, sir, not 42.
Somebody else, please.
You said, say that...
Say it again?
Subtract Babe Ruth's
career home run total
from Hank Arons.
Hmm.
I think...
Got a call.
I'm gonna go.
I just...
You know what?
Does it count?
Does it count?
I'm afraid it was just after the bell.
41.
It is, yeah, it is 41. You were one off.
Oh, okay. I was going to go 40, so that's something good thing.
755 minus 714. Ulysses still in control.
I'm going to go with baseball math.
Closing out baseball and math this time for 15 points.
Nolan Ryan has had his uniform number retired by three different teams.
What is the sum of those three numbers?
Wow.
So cool.
I'm not, I'm never going to win this category.
It's statistically impossible.
This category is fortunately done after this question.
There's no more baseball math.
The answer is 98.
He had 30 retired by the Angels and 34 retired by both the Astros and Rangers.
Okay.
I thought 30 was the number.
That's all right.
Javier, pardon me, Ulysses is still in control.
Baseball math is done.
We have the other three categories, four categories to go.
Let's go with what was.
What was, what was not was, but almost was a mouthful.
Before his 13-year NBA career
during which he was part of one all-star team,
he played three seasons for the Blue Jays as a utility player.
Name this shooting guard who won two NBA titles
with the Boston Celtics.
Shooting guard who won two went with Celtics?
Because I know the name and I can't.
It's just the wind.
She's outside waiting for somebody to figure up.
Danny Aange was the answer.
Danny Aange was the answer.
Hmm.
Ulysses 5 points, Javier, 5 points, Gabrielle, still yet to score, and we have about a minute to go in the round already.
Javier, pardon me, Ulysses still in control.
I always want to say Javier, because he was in control so long, it's Ulysses.
Let's go with what was.
Finishing up this one, and if you get this one, okay.
This professional Bowler's Association Hall of Famer was signed by the Baltimore Orioles as a left-handed pitcher,
but his contract was voided because of an injury.
Considered by many to be the greatest bowler of all time,
name this late legend known as the Doomsday Stroking Machine.
Oh, man.
That's going to be a no for me, dog.
Everyone's already tapping on this one.
Time is up.
The answer's Earl Anthony.
Earl Anthony.
Of course.
Baseball, Earl.
Baseball math and what was is gone.
We have Roaring 20s, colorful characters,
and All-Star Game Miscellania yet to be played.
Let's do Roaring 20s.
Roring 20s, this is about players
who's had uniform numbers in the 20s.
Which Hall of Fame Outfielders number 20
is retired by both the Cincinnati Reds
and Baltimore Orioles?
Um...
Oh, oh!
That is...
Pardon me, Javier is in there.
Frank Robinson.
Yes, for five points.
And unfortunately, that's the end of round one.
guys, Javier with 10 points, Ulysses 5.
Gabrielle is yet to score.
We'll be back for round two after I reset the board and write all the questions for round two.

Now back to Lockdown Mariners and your host, D.C. Lundberg.
Thank you very much, Joey Martin.
We are back here on Diamond Quiz.
Hopefully more than three questions get answered correctly in this round, we shall see.
But honestly, ladies and gentlemen, they picked the hardest material in that round.
So this should prove to be a better round, or at least I sincerely hope it does.
Scoring update, Javier with 10 points, Ulysses with 5, Gabrielle yet to score.
Javier gave us the last correct answer.
He will choose from among these categories.
Brothers in Arms, franchise records, AAA baseball, left on base, and little leaguers.
Javier, you are in control, sir.
All right, sir, I'd like to select the counter.
Brothers in arms, please.
All right.
These are about pairs of brothers who have both pitched in the big leagues.
Okay.
In 1986, this pair of brothers became the first two rookie pitchers to oppose each other in a major league baseball game.
One of them is in the Hall of Fame, while the other wound up being a journeyman who went on to a long, successful coaching career.
Name them.
That is Ulysses.
The Maddox Brothers?
Absolutely correct, sir, for 10 points, brings your total to 15, puts you in the lead.
Anybody notice how Mike Maddox looks exactly like Luigi from the Super Mario Brothers?
Yeah, just a little bit. He went in a diet or regiment, probably.
Ulysses, you still have control.
Very nicely done, sir.
I'll take franchise records, please.
Franchise records?
Who has hit the most home runs in the brief history of the Colorado Rockies?
Huh.
Nobody is going in on this.
And Gabrielle's in there.
Larry Walker.
Good guess.
And as a matter of record, that's who I thought it was going to be when I wrote the question, but it's incorrect.
Ulysses or Javi.
It's Nolan Ironado, isn't it?
I won't say until they guess.
I mean, I don't think they're going to buzz in there.
Oh, dang it! Why am I so bad?
That's okay. Who would you have said?
It's not going to count.
It would have been wrong anyway. It's Todd Helton.
Okay.
Todd Helton with 369 home runs.
I didn't realize that he hit that many home runs in his career, quite honestly.
Yeah, underrated.
Underrated for sure.
Very much so.
I know that he had like a great like five years with them.
I just said, eh, maybe that was it. I don't know.
He was more of a gap power guy from what I remember, a good contact guy.
Also, the only, a uniform.
form number to be retired by the Rockies, aside from Jackie Robinson's 42.
Ulysses still in control.
Yeah.
I'll take franchise records again, please.
Franchise records again this time for 20 points.
Anybody could take the lead on this question.
Who is the Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Oakland Athletics leader in total bases and runs
batted in, that entire history of that franchise.
Most total bases, most runs batted in.
And nobody's biting on this.
We have to go way back on this one, ladies and gentlemen.
It's Al Simmons, who played in the 30s.
Wow.
Okay.
Ulysses.
How about that?
Yeah.
I'll take Left on base.
Left on base.
These are questions that I wrote for other shows and we never got to them.
So let's...
Nobody asked for them.
Here we go.
MC Hammer derived his stage name from what Hall of Fame ball player?
Oh my God.
How do I not know this?
And there is a story behind this, which I will explain.
now because time has been called.
Hank Aaron.
He was Oakland A's bat boy in the 1970s,
and the team called him Little Hammer
because he looked like Hank Aaron, hence MC Hammer.
Oh, that's a fun one.
I like that awesome.
That's crazy.
Also, I actually, before we were doing it,
I was just reading one of Karima Abdul-Jabbar's autobiographies,
and he was recounting how as a kid,
he looked out the window of his classroom
in Manhattan, and
Hank Aaron was just playing stickball
outside with a bunch of kids.
Oh, nice. And he asked his teacher
if he could go outside and play with Hang Aaron.
And the teacher was like,
no. Oh,
I would have been like class dismissed.
We're all going to go, at least watch this.
Yeah, seriously.
Yes. Oh, that's missed opportunity.
Love it, Hank Aaron today.
D.C., these questions are
not to knock our pal and fellow co-host
Jason Hernandez, but these questions are a lot tougher than his questions.
I seem to do that.
Every other show, it seems.
Sometimes I make the material too hard.
Ulysses, you are still in control.
Let's go finish franchise records.
Let's finish up franchise records.
I hope somebody gets this one.
30 points with this one.
Who has won the most games in New York Mets history?
Most wins as a New York Mets.
Ulysses is in there first.
Tom Siever?
Yes.
30 points worth brings your score to 45, which kind of seems all insurmountable at this point.
30 points for that one, yeah.
Points are doubled in round two.
I think I forgot to say that at the top of the show.
I've done this so many times.
It seems like it's like a major.
So I apologize for that.
Yeah, 45 points, Hobby 10.
Gabriel yet to score.
Ulysses is still in control.
Let's go with little leaguers.
Little leaguers.
These are about players shorter than Jose Al-Tube.
Have to get the one shot at the.
Astros in every show.
A member of the 1914
Miracle Braves, what was the better known
nickname of 5-foot
5-inch shortstop, Walter
James Vincent Moranville?
What in the
world? Nobody's
biting on this one.
Rabbit Marino.
That's Rabbit Moranville.
Hunting Wabits.
Ulysses, you got it again.
AAA baseball, please.
AAA baseball. These are about
players with three A's in
their name. Who tossed a no-hitter in his 13th Major League start in 2006 and was also a member of
last year's world champion nationals? Really? Ulysses is in there. Anabal Sanchez. Yes, sir, for 10 points.
55, 55 points now. What would you like? Let's do AAA baseball. Triple A baseball, once again,
this time for 20 points. After breaking in with the Seattle Mariners in 1984, he made his loan
all-star appearance in 91 as a Kansas City Royal, named this slugging outfielder,
who also played for the Yankees, A's, White Sox, and Phillies.
Danny Tartable on that one.
Let's do Brothers in Arms?
Brothers in Arms, this time also for 20 points, Brothers in Arms.
This is the only pair of brothers to have both won the Sayang Award.
One of them is in the Hall of Fame, despite his reputation, as a spitball pitcher,
Name them.
Name the two brothers?
Yes, Ulysses is in there.
The Necro brothers.
Necro brothers incorrect.
One of, let's see, Gabrielle or Javi.
I'll accept a last name only on this one.
Havi, yes.
Is the last name?
Oh, now I'm choking.
Perry?
Yes, it is.
It's Gaylord and...
What's the first name of one of them?
That's how I remember this.
Gaylord Perry and Jim Perry.
Yeah, that's why I remember this.
Nice.
Yes.
All right.
Harvey, you are in control now.
Let's do Brothers and Arms, man.
Brothers and Arms finishing this one up for 30 points.
This pair briefly pitched for the same team in 2006.
The older brother was a journeyman pitching for six different teams,
while the younger brother spent all but two months of his career
with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Name them.
Ulysses.
The Weaver Brothers.
Yes.
Oh, yes.
Jeff and Jared Weaver
as time expires here in
round two.
Ulysses protected his lead,
got it.
If Javier would have gotten
and he would have gotten the game,
but Ulysses wins with 85 points.
Congratulations.
Thanks.
Thank you so much.
That was really fun.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I got learnt.
That was fun.
I got learnt.
That's all right.
Ulysses, as the winner,
you get to do your plugs first.
That's the reward on this program.
I like that. I like that reward.
All right. Go for it, sir. Glory is yours.
You can listen to Locked-on Race,
you know, Monday through Friday on Twitter,
at Locked-on Race on Instagram, same handle,
locked-on race at gmail.com.
It's a very fun show. We do trivia every Friday,
and, you know, it's a fun show about a team that just keeps on winning.
Thank you very much, and thank you. Congratulations again, Ulysses.
Thank you again for being here.
here, Havi as our second place finisher, you get to go next.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, what's up, guys?
You could follow me on Twitter at Hava Peno, which is spelled J-A-V-I-I-P-E-N-O.
And also, even more lit is the Lockdown Padres' Twitter account, which is at L-O-U-U-U-Score
Padres.
Go check that out and subscribe to the podcast, always lots of fun because I don't know if
anybody's heard, but Padre's really fun team, really, really fun team.
And also, just a shout out to Edwin Diaz, you jerk.
I was going to win my fantasy matchup this week.
a draw for the fourth time in a row.
He is hereby my recipient of best reliever
in the game only when you're up by eight runs.
Congratulations to Edward Diaz.
He's very upset.
And as this is airing in the middle of the week,
wink, wink, nudge, we're recording on Sunday.
Might you be complaining about that on Monday's episode
of Locked on Padres?
I might just do it.
Even though he's not on the Padres,
I might just make fun of him because I'm mad.
Oh, why not?
I'm very bad online.
But there is a lot of...
I think you have something else.
I think you...
I think you...
...planned for Monday's Locked on Padres.
And I know because it's recording with me.
Yeah, that's the other thing.
Yeah, people might have heard.
I talked about the reliever I'm mad at.
But I'm not mad at Trevor Rosenthal.
So we're going to be talking about that trade
and because Guy Bail is on the pod, obviously.
Can we talk about Mr. Mitch Molland?
So stay tuned for that, guys.
Or go back and listen to it because...
Or go back and listen to it.
This is Wednesday or Thursday's program.
Again, we're recording this on Sunday.
ladies and gentlemen, but we don't know.
I have no idea what day this is actually going to be broadcast.
Javi, thank you for being here.
Go back and listen to Monday's episode of Lockdown Padres.
And our next person will have appeared on that program, Gabrielle Starr.
What have you got to plug?
I host Locks on Red Sox.
I'm a lot more knowledgeable about baseball than I sounded today.
But shout out of D.C. for stumping the hell out of me.
Even though I will say there were a couple where I got it,
I couldn't get my buzzer in time and that's on me.
You know.
It happens.
Same thing happens on Jeopardy.
If they don't answer the questions, it doesn't make, it's not because they don't know.
It's because they don't get in on time, most of the time.
You listen is just so much faster than I am, but.
Sometimes that's the name of the game, unfortunately.
Honestly, yeah.
I mean, it's like Piawanzo beating Vlad Jr. in the home run derby last year.
Kind of, yeah.
He tired of.
himself out so much with those, you know, with those, oh my gosh, I just lost my train of thought.
You know, go back and watch it and you'll know what I'm talking about because I don't remember quite
honestly. Locked on Red Sox.
Vlad Jr. Yes. Vlad Jr. versus Jock Peterson. That's what it was.
See, thank you for picking that up. See, she does know her baseball, ladies and gentlemen.
Even if the host of this program doesn't. No, thank you again, Gabrielle, for
being here. Anything else you want to plug or mention before we head off into the sunset, so to speak,
which is, I don't know why I said that. No, just thanks for having me on. Hopefully we can do it again
sometime and I'll actually score some points. Thank you once again. We will be back with a regular
episode tomorrow. What we're going to talk about, I don't know, because again, it is, it is,
oh, forget it. Please join us tomorrow when I will be joined.
My guest panel is Detective Stanley Wojahoehjahe.
Brandon the Wonder Dog and a cell phone.
This is Diamond Quiz presented by Locked on Mariners.
We'll be back tomorrow and I will have my tongue untied by then.
I sincerely hope.

Ladies and gentlemen, when I wrote the questions for this show, which was recorded last Sunday,
I obviously had no idea that Tom Seaver, the subject of one of the questions in the
franchise records category would pass away shortly before publishing.
His family made the announcement yesterday that he indeed died last Monday, August 31st.
Tom Terrific won 311 ball games in his great Major League career is the Mets all-time
leader in wins, games started, shutouts, complete games, earned run average, and strikeouts.
He tossed a no-hitter in 1978 as a Cincinnati Red and won his 300th
big league game in 1985 while with the White Sox.
Over the past year and a half, he had been battling Alzheimer's disease.
He was born November 17th, 1944 in Fresno, California, and again passed away last Monday,
August 31st, 2020.
Tom Seaver, Tom Terrific, was 75 years old.
