Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, it's not exactly revenge, but it still felt good. We'll talk about the Mariners series win over the Blue Jays coming up. Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Ahoy, sailors. Hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend. The Marin certainly did.
Starting point is 00:00:27 My name is tighting is awesome. I'm joined as always by my co-coes Colby Patnode. You're getting this show tonight because Colby's traveling tomorrow. We'll be back on Tuesday with a mailman. bag episode, but tonight, we're going to talk about something that makes me personally very, very happy. That would be the Mariners smoking the Toronto Blue Jays. So nice. After losing 2-0 on Friday, the Mariners win Saturday and Sunday's games by a combined score of 15 to nothing.
Starting point is 00:00:56 This absolute dominance by the Mariners this weekend. The Blue Jays didn't score a single run for the final 24 innings of this. this series. Just excellent pitching across the board by the Marrars. And we also saw maybe their most complete win of the season yesterday in that 11 to nothing beat down on the 4th of July. That completes a five and one homestand for the Marys, which is massive for them, obviously, because they're heading back to the East Coast to play two of the hottest teams of baseball and the Marlins and the Ray's coming up here before the All-Star break, Colby. Yeah. I mean, we talked about this, you know, before the homestand started. Like, man, it's, it's,
Starting point is 00:01:35 you kind of look at what they're up against the East Coast road trip against the hottest team of baseball and the best team in the American League back to back. They really, you know, I think we said they really should go five and one on this homestand, but they need to go at least four and two. They went five and one. You know, in the one game they lost, you know, C's just shoved and you had terrible at bats. And it was, you know, back to back games where your offense didn't show up. I mean, thankfully you won one of those games somehow. You did beat the Angels 1 to nothing. But yeah, your offense didn't show up for a couple of games in a row,
Starting point is 00:02:10 and that happens, especially to this team right now. And, you know, they're another injury bug since we last talked, Julio with a random injury that landed him on the concussion aisle. So, you know, this team continues to not quite be able to get everybody back in the lineup together. I think it was Divish or maybe it was Goldie said that Julio Cowell. Donovan and Randy have been in the lineup together, 17 games this year. Like we're almost, what, 90 games into the year? Are we at 90?
Starting point is 00:02:44 I think we're at 90 now. 91, I think. Yeah. So that's crazy. But anyways, they did find a way to win a one-nothing game. And then the offense unfortunately carried over their performance to Friday. And Cecil's good on top of it. So that really didn't help your odds.
Starting point is 00:03:00 But then they bounced back in a big way. And they explode and they hit almost it for the home run cycle. on Saturday, which was great to see. Obviously, you know, we talked about how this team, they need to hit home runs to sustain offense at Team Mobile Park. They had three yesterday, only one today. But it was a two-run homer and it turned out to be all you needed in this game. So, yeah, they hit some home runs.
Starting point is 00:03:23 They played pretty clean defense. No major defensive miscues, an error. I think Cole Young had an error, but for the most part. GP had an error on Friday. Oh, yeah, throwing air. Yep. So again, not perfect, but for the Mariners, pretty decent defense in this homestand.
Starting point is 00:03:39 But the story of this one was certainly the pitching. It was electric. I mean, Luis Castillo gave up two on Friday. And that was by far the worst start of the homestand. Yeah. Like that, that's, you know, that's some fancy pitching right there. Yeah. Just an incredible job by all three starters.
Starting point is 00:04:00 Castillo, Logan Gilbert, Emerson, Hancock. And this starting rotation now, aside from a, few hiccups here and there really starting to look like 2023, 24. Just be nice if we could get something close to the 2025 offense to pair along with it. And then we'd be really cooking here. I mean, yeah, it's crazy. Like if they had any kind of consistency with their offense, with the pitching that they've gotten, really for the better part of the last month or so, I mean, a couple hiccups here
Starting point is 00:04:31 and there. But like, for the most part, they've been very, very good. since Bryce returned. And so if they just had any kind of consistent offense, they'd probably be the best team in the American League. I mean, the Yankees are cratering right now. The Ray's good team. Obviously, we're 90-some-odd games into this thing.
Starting point is 00:04:48 They're not going to collapse. They're obviously a bit of a threat there. But yeah, the Mariners, talent-wise and all of that, if they could just find some consistent offense, they're probably going to become the favorite in the American League. So, you know, we'll see if they add anybody who they add, if they do add a bat, if they ever get healthy. There's a bunch of what ifs attached to that. But yeah, the offense.
Starting point is 00:05:15 Yeah. And, you know, obviously big three run homer on Saturday. And he had a nice hit today against, was it little or is the other left? Lou Hardy. Yeah. So, you know, we'll see. of that leads to anything. He's got to put it together for a couple weeks before we believe that he's back or anything like that. But yeah, or Julio getting back healthy will help. But Cal, far and away, he is the biggest X factor here. And you don't need 2025 Cal. You really don't. If you get second half, if you get for the second half of the year, if you get 2024 Cal Raleigh for the entire second half of the year, you're probably the best lineup in the American League. Like that's how big of a difference it is between 2026 Cow Raleigh and just,
Starting point is 00:06:02 average Cal Raleigh. Like it's such a massive gap there. So yeah, the offense, we'll see. But definitely some good signs this weekend is, you know, we talked about this team has to hit home runs. And they, the ones they hit were not cheap. Let's put it that way.
Starting point is 00:06:20 Yeah, this weekend was the proof of concept, right? It showed you exactly what the upside of this club is and what this club can ultimately be against obviously a team that has greatly struggled. and is dealing with injuries of its own this year and all that, but still very talented club, very scrappy club. A lot of the same guys that we saw in October last year. And it was good to see the Marys handle business and just dominate really on both ends
Starting point is 00:06:48 over these last two games. I want to talk more about Logan Gilbert and Emerson Hancock in greater detail here in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by Amazon. A big thank you to our friends at Amazon for this limited break. This back to school season, spend less on your kids with Amazon. We all know how crazy the back to school shopping experience can be.
Starting point is 00:07:13 It starts with a few items on the list. And suddenly you're shopping for supplies and clothes and lunch gear and tech and about 10 other things you didn't see coming. It adds up fast. Like when you buy clothes for back to school, then your kid has a gross spurt two weeks later and you're right back where you start it. Sometimes it genuinely feels like they're growing faster than your budget can keep up. Or when your kid's definition of need for back to school shopping is a lot different than your definition of need. Somehow, the list keeps getting longer every time they look at it. And explaining the need versus one conundrum this time of year has just become an annual part of the process.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Or when the teacher's supply list arrives and somehow every item feels completely reasonable on its own, but then you add everything together and realize just how much stuff one kid needs for one school year. So remember, with Amazon's low back-to-school prices, just spend less on your kids. because every dollar you don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them. Shop back to school at Amazon and spend less on your kids. And you're listening to the Lock Time Air and his podcast, part of the Lock Time Podcast Network, your team every day. For more information, go to Patreon.com, forward slash control of zone. Link in the description of this episode. So yesterday, yesterday's starter and today's starter, Logan Gilbert and Emerson Hancock, we're supposed to piggyback one another. And then the Mariners, for the second week in a row,
Starting point is 00:09:03 bailed on that idea at the last minute at least you know when we heard it maybe they had decided that a little while beforehand but it was pretty much at the last minute for us though that we found out that they were not going to deploy the piggyback once again after you know again there was this whole thing about trimp blanks stayed up for 48 straight hours or whatever putting these plants together then everyone unanimously decided on going with the piggyback plan whatever you know, we had heard so much about that. And then they did it once and never again. But, you know, it worked out for the best because, again, you know, Logan Gilbert
Starting point is 00:09:43 dominates yesterday. Emerson Hancock dominates today. Seven innings of scoreless ball from Hancock today. Seven and a third scoreless innings from Gilbert yesterday. It's both of those guys incredibly, incredibly impressive. Yeah, it started yesterday with Logan. He was simply incredible for a, minute there kind of looked like maybe he was going to have his second complete game shutout on the
Starting point is 00:10:07 on the fourth of July. Very fitting to do it against Canada. But yeah, Gilbert was just, and really Hancock today too, just fastballs, just so many fastballs. Logan yesterday was 64% fastball. His yearly average is under 40. So like he was just going right after them. And by the way, 34% whiff rate on the fastball, along with a 40% percent. called strike plus whiff. Like he was just throwing the fastball and daring the blue jays to hit it and they couldn't. They couldn't do anything with it. And, you know, it's kind of a continuation of what we've seen from Logan since really
Starting point is 00:10:43 Cowell's come back, maybe even a start or two before that. He's really become fastball slider. And he still has the split, but he's throwing it less and less and less. He only threw it seven times yesterday, sorry, six times yesterday. Didn't get a whiff on it. Didn't get a called strike on it. And he still dominated. without what has been his best pitch, his go-to pitch over the last year plus.
Starting point is 00:11:06 It's fastball slider now for Logan. And obviously that's, you know, quite a change from where we've been. And Logan's fastball over the last couple years hasn't been really all that good. And yet he's found some extra VLO with it. He's got some giddy up to it. And he's just challenging guys with it. He's getting ahead and he's getting quick outs like we've talked about. He was able to go deep in yesterday's game.
Starting point is 00:11:29 I think he's gone six plus innings now and eight of his. last 10 starts. And one of the starts that he didn't go six, he went five and two-third. So, yeah, it's been a really good run for Logan. And then, you know, Emerson today just went right after guys two with the fastball. And his Velo was actually kind of mediocre today. We didn't see 98 from Hancock. We saw a lot of 94, 95 from him, some 96, but we didn't see 98.
Starting point is 00:11:59 We didn't see a lot of 97. I think maybe, yeah, no registered pitches over 96.1 miles an hour is what it looks like here. But still, it was fastball heavy through 92 pitches, 44, four seamers, 192 seamers. And then Cutter, you want to count that as a fastball or not, you should, it is a fastball. He actually threw 10 of those. So when you look at his overall pitch usage, 92 pitches, all but. But 19 of them were some form of the fastball. So the Mariners starting rotation is just going right after guys.
Starting point is 00:12:38 It's a very fastball heavy approach. And they're trusting it. They're getting whiffs on it. Hancock today at 14 whiffs on the day. And a 27% whiff rate on his four seamer. That's pretty darn good, especially when you back it up with, you know, four whiffs total on seven swings on two unique breaking balls, the sweeper and a curf ball. that he's dropped in a little bit more and more. So 32% called strike plus whiff,
Starting point is 00:13:03 just really aggressive today. Really only had the one inning where he walked two guys, but he was able to get a double play ball in between them. That was really it. He was in cruise control mode. And again, the Blue Jays lineup, not what it was last year. Vlad really having a tough, tough year.
Starting point is 00:13:21 And obviously he's, you know, the straw that stirs the drink and Springer's on the paternity list. And he hasn't had a good year this year anyways, blah, blah, blah. But still, these are two guys, or this is a team full of guys who make a lot of contact. They put the ball in play. And the Mariners starters just went right after them with fastball, has got more than their fair share of whiffs and really put these guys on their heels.
Starting point is 00:13:43 And it set them up for success over the last two days. And, you know, to a little bit of lesser extent, Louise too. Luis really had the one bad inning on Friday. And, you know, Colt Emerson was able to bail him out of that inning to stop the bleeding. And then he locked it in after that. So just really impressive. impressive outings from these three guys. Maybe not huge strikeout numbers, but plenty of swing and miss.
Starting point is 00:14:04 And man, they were really aggressive with this team in the middle of the zone. We talk about, you know, control the zone and all that. That's what it looks like right there. Absolutely. Yeah, I just love the approach from all these guys, just going right after these dudes, just attacking them. And, you know, for Hancock, I mean, this was probably the best we've seen from him since that start he had against the Mets, but over a month ago.
Starting point is 00:14:26 you know and like we had talked about too over the last couple of months now really for Hancock maybe six, seven weeks or so. The strikeouts just haven't really been there for the most part. He had six strikeouts, you know, in his last start, six strikeouts in the bad start that he had against the Red Sox
Starting point is 00:14:47 but then two strikeouts, three strikeouts, seven strikeouts, that was against the bets that start that I mentioned. Three strikeouts, four strikeouts, four strikeouts. You know, that's all. all since the 14 strikeout game, which is clearly the outlier. But still,
Starting point is 00:15:02 he was getting more strikeouts early on in the season, and then it was starting to go away. And obviously, you know, the sweeper is kind of faded for him and all that. We talked about it. It felt like he was teetering on this, like,
Starting point is 00:15:12 huge blow-up outing. So, yeah. But, you know, over the last, again, really since that,
Starting point is 00:15:19 that Mets started, it just kind of feels like he's been battling, right? And he's still been able to give the Mariners a chance to win more often than not over that stretch. But this looked like the Emerson Hancock that we saw kind of in the first, you know, four or five weeks of the season. Much closer. And you know, you wonder maybe the six man rotation is, is a part of that. He's getting that extra day's rest. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:43 we don't know why the Mariners jump to the six man. They've talked about some guys needing a little bit of rest here and there. And Hancock definitely seems like one of those guys who that could be in reference to we we it's not the Hancock's not durable or anything like that or that he's not in good shape or he doesn't have the whatever it's just this guy hasn't thrown 200 innings you know it's it's not like he's you know been in a big league rotation this long ever like when he has been in the marriage rotation it's been for a month at a time not you know three months at a time so it's just different and now he's seven and two thirds over his career high you know his previous career high and then he's pitched at the major league level specifically uh he's getting close
Starting point is 00:16:24 to his career high and just professional innings in a season. So, you know, you definitely want to keep an eye on him in that regard. And so we'll see how the mayor is kind of handle that over the course of the year. We've talked about that. But, yeah, it was good to see him, especially
Starting point is 00:16:40 bounce back. I mean, bounce back is kind of a strong year because he's been fine for the most part over the last month or so. But like, again, it just kind of felt like he was just kind of grinding out these starts. It just wasn't as fluid. as it had been at the start of the year for him.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Number four, good number five type of stuff over the last month. And today it was more back to that like number three kind of bulldog type of pitcher. Yeah. So really good stuff from him. Really good stuff from Logan. And also like, yeah, they lost. But like Luis Castillo was really good on Friday as well. Castillo's been very, very good since the start before. the piggyback started to start in Houston.
Starting point is 00:17:27 He's been very good since then. Again, not perfect. He's had a blow up in one of the piggyback rolls against the, not the white socks, the other one. It was the first one that they went back to the piggyback. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:42 Yeah. He gave up like five. And even then like a bunch of soft contact, there was an error in there like whatever. It wasn't good though. I think that might have been the Red Sox. Yeah, it was. I'm not saying he was good,
Starting point is 00:17:53 but he wasn't as bad. as the final line would indicate. But he's been really good since, you know, the middle of May, basically. And A, that's good because, hey, you have another good pitcher. That's never a bad thing. But also, there is any kind of inclination to trade him this summer.
Starting point is 00:18:11 Obviously, you need him to not only remain stretched out, but you also need him to produce. And he has done that. You're going to try and get a team to take his, you know, any of his $24 million he's owed next year and whatever he's got left this year, you're going to even pitch well and he has been. And we'll see where the Mariners are at in a couple weeks for all we know. They're going to really need Luis Castillo down the stretch because, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:32 X is on the IL for six weeks with an oblique or whatever. Like we don't know how this is going to play itself out, but Luis is a legitimate major league starter. We go through this every year with him. He's going to go through a five, six game stretch where it's just like the end is here, the end is here. But this dude battles. He battles.
Starting point is 00:18:49 And even when he doesn't have his best stuff, he will find a way to keep you in a ball game. more often than not. And so if that's your worst pitcher, you're in really good shape. And Luis Castillo has bounced back in a big, big way over the last, really almost two full months now. A little bit of a short show today. But again, we'll be back on Tuesday with the mailbag.
Starting point is 00:19:12 We probably get some questions about the all-star selections and all that stuff. You know, Randy being the only mariner getting in, Logan Price, etc., not getting in. probably piggyback questions, all that good stuff. So we didn't talk about it today. We'll probably get to it on Tuesday. The tweet is up now. So if you're on Twitter, you can leave us a question over there.
Starting point is 00:19:34 Also got a couple submissions in our Discord. So if you're part of that, you can add there and ask us some questions too. I think we've gotten three or four of those in the last week since we lasted a mailbag. So maybe there's something we pull out of there. Who knows? But either way, send your questions again, we're probably going to talk about All-Stars and the piggyback. ways. So maybe think, you know, something else. I mean, someone's probably already asked about it. I don't know. I don't know. But ask,
Starting point is 00:20:00 ask away. But, you know, maybe check beforehand just to see if it's been asked already. I know the piggyback thing's been asked. I'm not sure about the All-Stars. But we're probably going to talk about them, whether it gets asked to or not because content, baby, content. That's right. And then we'll be recording that on Tuesday and dropping that on Tuesday so you do have a little while here to still ask you questions. Yeah. So yeah. All right.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Well, that's going to do it for our show. Thank you so much for joining us here on the Lockdown Marrars podcast.
