Starting point is 00:00:56 New episode out today, actually. And that will be pretty relevant in a moment. you'll see. Visit patreon.com forward slash control the zone for more information on that. But on today's episode, blocked on Mariners. It's a good thing we waited to record after the Mariners played their series and season finale against the Astros today. Because this probably would have been a much,
Starting point is 00:01:21 much different sounding show had we not heartbreaking loss for the M's last night. But they bounced back today with an 8 to 5 win over the Astros to escape out of Houston with at least one win. And we're going to give you our takeaways from the series and today's game in a moment. Later on in the show, we're going to talk about some potential offseason targets for the Mariners. And that's going off of a conversation we had on today's episode of Control the Zone. And then last night, I had the pleasure of hopping on an episode flocked on Diamondbacks with host Miller Thomas. I'm going to include an excerpt from our conversation in today's episode.
Starting point is 00:01:59 We talked a lot about the Mariners and even going to go. got into what it would take for the M's to reacquire Coutel Marte, really fun stuff that I think you will absolutely enjoy. If this is your first time joining us on Lockdown Mariners, welcome to the show. Please give us a follow or subscribe wherever you're listening to this. We greatly appreciate it. Colby, this is a way more fun podcast than I,
Starting point is 00:02:24 than what I was preparing for today. The Mariners blown a 4-2 lead in the ninth, any last night and eventually losing by score 5 to 4. They were losing 4 to 2 late in today's game as well, but Jared Kelnick with a game time double and then Jose Marmaleos with a go-ahead
Starting point is 00:02:42 2-out 2 RBI single to put the Mariners ahead in the top of the 9th. J.P. Crawford plays add-on with a two-run dinger of his own and Paul Seawald after being burned by Alex Bregman for the second straight game but this time thankfully just a solo
Starting point is 00:02:58 shot shut the door and The Mariners getting much needed win as they head into their off day tomorrow. Have a nice little performance on YouTube TV. Thankfully, they allowed us to listen to the radio broadcast. And Jose Marmalios wins YouTube player of the game because that means, well, let's be real. That's a thing. Yeah, it's a thing.
Starting point is 00:03:23 So, Colby, how are you feeling, man? You know, you relieved, you disappointed still? What's going on? no you know you're you're you're much more relieved uh after today's game than you were after last nights because the thing all along was oh well you swept the the diamond back so if you can find a way to win one out of these three you should be okay and that's going to end up being the case regardless of what happens in the other games tonight if toronto wins well you're a game back but you do pick your game back at them but you do pick up a game on the yankees and if it works the other
Starting point is 00:03:55 way around well then you just picked up a game on toronto you're now tied as the first team out again. And then the Boston series, you're still rude for Tampa. You still would really like that. But, you know, again, if Boston wins today,
Starting point is 00:04:08 you're still just three out. So pretty much you're right back to where you started. A bit of a bummer that you couldn't pull off the win yesterday because then you might be looking at another series win against the Astros. And, you know, probably being a game back heading into your off day. I mean, that would have been something.
Starting point is 00:04:26 But yeah, you know, at the end of the day, if you told me before the series started that they were just going to win one of three here and you didn't tell me how they were going to win it or how they were going to lose the other two, then I would have just accepted that and said that was a good series. And it was. Side note here, one thing I don't want to get lost because there's a lot that happened the last two days. Diego Castillo looks excellent since coming back from the from the IL. He was filthy again today. He was filthy yesterday. and you can kind of see how adding him to the bullpen, I mean, the stuff is better than what Graveman has. It's just, it's not deniable. So he looks healthy. I was going to ask you about Castillo because the slider looked great. And he looked dominant the last two, last two games.
Starting point is 00:05:15 He pitched today. He pitched last night. He looked awesome. Yeah, and he was 96, 97 with some fastballs. Before, you know, right before the injury, he was 91, 92. two with mostly sinkers. But since he's come back, he's challenged guys with his foreseamer,
Starting point is 00:05:32 and he's throwing this slider a lot, and the slider is absolutely filthy right now. So it appears that the time off did him some good. We'll have to see how he finishes out. But, you know, I haven't seen the arm angle with that was something that we had heard that his arm angle had dropped a little bit to try and compensate for his shoulder issue.
Starting point is 00:05:50 And that's what led the slider to be flatter. It's not flat now. So whatever, you know, whether it was mechanical, whether it was just he needed rest, uh, whatever is, it worked. And he was, you know, downright filthy, uh, in a Mariners bullpen that, you know, after that first game was still good. I, you know, it's a bummer. Seawall didn't have it last night for three patterns. Of course, the next three, he looked like Paul Seawald again. So just bad luck there. But other than that, the bullpen was absolute nails all series. Uh, and that's, that's good.
Starting point is 00:06:24 Yeah. Now that they have a good. Diego Castillo in there, along with, you know, Yoan Ramirez, kind of raising his floor a little bit. And, you know, Casey Sallard's been really strong. And, you know, Eric Swanson's decent. They, you know, they've gotten some decent contributions out of Matt and Dries and Sean Doolittle along the way. They've, um, they've got a good, uh, they got a good little group there that's
Starting point is 00:06:48 starting to really, you know, really come together. And it's a really cohesive unit. And now there's more than, I think, a couple guys now that you can probably depend on which you know last week or even a couple weeks ago wasn't really the case it was mostly Paul Cewald and Drew's second writer and now
Starting point is 00:07:06 you got at least a couple more guys that you can rely on a bit better behind them so that's really nice so no concerns whatsoever about Paul Seawald I assume from you because that's how I feel but I know that some people on Twitter were a little
Starting point is 00:07:21 you know a little shock by that but I mean come on Alex Breggman is really good of baseball. I mean, the thing about Breggman's home run today, too, is that it was a decent
Starting point is 00:07:33 pitch. It was a slider. It was a little elevated, but it was off the outside corner, and he wrapped the bat around it and hit it, you know, into the,
Starting point is 00:07:39 into the Crawford boxes. So it wasn't like, you know, it wasn't like everything was in the middle of the plate again. And, you know, the slider didn't have bite
Starting point is 00:07:48 and he couldn't throw up for a strike. He threw a pretty good pitch. You just got to give Bregman credit. He's, you know, an all world player. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:55 he's finally, and healthy and then he went out and he put a good swing on it so i mean sometimes that just happens um if he had gone out today and looked like he did last night where he just couldn't get the slider anywhere near the strike zone and the fastball was you know towards the middle of the plate instead of up around the letters then yeah but after the home run and again the home run pitch he gave up it was pretty good pitch but after that fastball was up at the letters and and the slider was sharp so uh yeah i'm fine with that it's it's going to happen sometimes guys even edwin dyes blue saves. I mean, it's sometimes you don't have it. And Seawalt did yesterday. And he looked good today.
Starting point is 00:08:32 So, so it goes, you know. And now you have the off day and your bullpen should be really well rested heading into Friday. You also have, you know, probably your three biggest, I mean, Marco's going to eat innings for you in theory, right? Chris Flexen's going to eat innings for you. So your bullpen should hopefully be in pretty good shape for that crucial series against Boston. but hey you know you got to take care of business against the diamondbacks before that series matters at all yeah absolutely real quick before we we move on here what did you think about logan gilbert's start last night because that kind of got lost and everything that happened it was pretty good um not great there were some issues there but uh you know second time through he struggled for a few hitters there
Starting point is 00:09:17 then he made the adjustment we started seeing him flip his curveball in there on the first pitch more often And I really liked his approach against Correa in the, I think it was the fourth inning, starting with a curveball, Correa way out in front, slider off the plate, set up a, you know, a burrowing two-seeing fastball. That was 95, a little bit off the inside corner, but Murphy did a nice job of framing it for him. And it was a pitch that Correa didn't have a shot of doing anything with. So it was just a really good approach, a really good game plan, I feel like, from Gilbert. and we even saw the adjustment come, you know, in the middle of a start,
Starting point is 00:09:54 which is not something Gilbert has been known for, you know, since he's been called up. So it was good to see him make that midgame adjustment, something that, you know, I'm not worried about long term, but for this year it's not something we've seen. So it was good to see that. I thought he was fine overall. It was a good step forward. All right. So coming up, what do they think about the Mariners and Diamondbacks land?
Starting point is 00:10:20 An excerpt from my conversation with Miller Thomas on Locked-on Diamondbacks is right around the corner. But first, a quick reminder of this episode of Lockdown Marriages is brought to you by Spotify Green Room. Green Room is the first social audio platform made for sports fans. Starting point is 00:11:31 Green Room changing the way we talk sports. Also want to remind you that this episode of Lockdown Mariners is brought to you by Stat Hero. Did you know 85% of people who play daily fantasy sports lose? Is this really that surprising though? I mean, the game is rigged against you. You're playing against thousands of other. lineups, not to mention experts who have more tools and more time than you do. You don't stand a chance, but that's not the case with Stat Hero.
Starting point is 00:11:57 It's the first ever daily fantasy sports book that puts the player in control and winning within reach. Here's how it works. Stat Hero shows you their lineups and dares you to beat them. It's you versus the house and a head-to-head fantasy matchup where you name your stakes and winner takes all. You have the advantage. Stat Hero is showing you their lineups ahead of time. No one else does that. With Stath Hero, you are in total control.
Starting point is 00:12:21 Stat Hero is DFS the way it was meant to be one-on one. Go to stathero.com slash locked on, sign up for free. And right now, you can get three times back on your first play. That's right. They're giving you a 300% match. That's unheard of. So go to stathero.com slash locked on right now. Stathero.com slash locked on.
Starting point is 00:12:44 On tomorrow's episode, we're going to tell you why the Mariners will still greatly value the trade market this off season despite having money to play with in free agency and one guy they could potentially look at via trade is outfielder slash second basement Cotel Marte, the former mariner turned Diamondback and the Mitch
Starting point is 00:13:02 Hanager slash Gene Sigura trade. I jumped on locked on Diamondbacks last night and talked all about that and the Mariners with host Miller Thomas. So here's an excerpt of that discussion. Hope you enjoy. So for you, what's your overall philosophy when it comes to prospects? For a
Starting point is 00:13:17 Mariners team that's, you know, in the mix right now for the postseason, and maybe they'll be in the mix in the future. Would you want to just keep building this farm system and let the young guys develop and grow organically? Or would you say, let me take a couple of these pieces, throw some darts, and try to get maybe a star in the Mariners uniform. Yeah, no, it's certainly time in the rebuild now to take some shots. And honestly, you didn't really expect to be in this position this year. This was kind of a, you know, for the most part, a development year. And now it's turned into something more. which is great.
Starting point is 00:13:49 And it gives, you know, the fan something to buy it. And it gives ownership no more excuses to not spend money this off season. They have a lot of payroll and they're going to be busy in free agency. But Jerry Depoto loves to make trades. I mean, anyone that pays attention to trades in Major League Baseball knows that Jerry DePoto is the busiest man in Major League Baseball. And he's absolutely going to make trades. I love the idea of trading for a superstar that's not going to make a ton of money. and then using the leftover money that you have to, you know, sign complimentary guys, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:23 a couple of $15, $20 million guys and, you know, a couple of $5 to $8 million guys, et cetera, and really build out your roster that way. Because I still think that they have a ton of talent left over. If they trade, you know, let's say they trade Emerson Hancock or George Kirby or Noel B. Marte or, you know, a couple of those guys and get themselves Jose Ramirez, you know, for example. or Citele. That's... But yeah, like, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:56 the, I think it's absolutely time for them to, you know, this winter to start taking some shots and build out this roster. And look, their pro scouting department, I wouldn't, I wouldn't bet against it right now. The things that they've done with, you know, just minor league signings.
Starting point is 00:15:17 Like Paul Seawald. Paul Seawald is one of the best relievers in all the baseball now. And the guy came out of nowhere. Chris Flexen has been an incredible starter for them this year. He's been an absolute boon for their rotation. I would love to see what they do when they actually identify, establish major leaguers, like really good major leaguers that they feel fit their philosophy,
Starting point is 00:15:39 that they fit their organization. That's really, really exciting to me. Yeah, like I tell every podcast host that comes on here, we're not trading Ketel Marte. I don't care what anyone says. He's still a chief guy under $10 million for the next couple of years. I'm keeping that guy. I'm ready to give him the max.
Starting point is 00:15:55 He's that good of a player. So I really, I would really be devastated if the debaq trade Ketal Marte. And who knows a couple years that probably will happen. So that was the question that I wanted to ask because my co-host, Colby, loves Ketal Marte and wants to trade for Ketal Marte. you think so that's absolutely what the mariner should do i i'm not super on board with it because i think primarily they would be using marty in the outfield and i don't think that they need to take a massive shot in the outfield i think that that more so needs to be at their base or maybe starting
Starting point is 00:16:32 pitching or something if they're going to make one big trade but man he's he's sucked on kital marty so i i was hoping maybe to also put uh this part in our show uh for tomorrow for our listeners. So I wanted to ask you, what would it take? What would it take? And I know, like, let's put personal feelings aside real quick. What was a realistic trade package for Ketalmarte, especially, you know, with a team that's not competing right now? Well, that's always a tough question to answer when it comes
Starting point is 00:17:06 to baseball because it's hard to gauge the value of star players in baseball. You'll see some star players and they'll go. Like, when the D-BACs trade did Zach Rinky to the Astros. They got three of their top five prospects in that organization. But then you see these deals like Nolan Aronado, and you're like, that's what he got back for him. So it's hard to say, but if I was the GM of the debacks, I'm not giving up a Ketalmarte, unless I feel like I'm getting an A-list prospect back.
Starting point is 00:17:31 I believe Ketel-Marte is that good. I believe he's an MVP candidate win healthy. Now, that's a question. He hasn't really been healthy at all this season. 2020 was a weird year, Alconda throw that away. But when he's been on the field this year, his numbers are pretty accurate. He's like a 350 hitter whenever he's going to play this season. Like he's legit got to hit in almost every game he's played.
Starting point is 00:17:50 Like he's been to stud the entire season when he's been healthy. So for me, if I'm trading Ketel-Marte, I better get an established, the highest upside prospect I could get. I better get top three A plus-plus prospect back because I'm trading a potential MVP of the league and the Keltel-Marte. And I would agree, if I'm trading for Ketel-Morté, I would want him to be at second base. I don't like Ketel-Martin in center field. He's fine.
Starting point is 00:18:13 he's a fine defensive player. His athleticism covers up some of his defensive issues, but that dude is just going to take too much of a beating playing center field. He just does too much out there. And he's already a little bit more fragile than some of the other D-backs players. So I want to see him go back to second base. Just want to say thanks again to Millard for having me on Locked-on Diamondbacks. You can listen to the full episode out now wherever you're listening to this episode of Lockdown Mariners.
Starting point is 00:18:39 So once you're done with this, search Locked on Diamondbacks. and you'll be sure to find it. So to wrap things up, we're going to be continuing a discussion we had on Control the Zone today and give you a few players the Mariners could target this offseason who no one is really talking about right now. So the Mariners are going to be busy, busy, busy this off season. And there are already plenty of names being speculated about from free agency to trades and all that. But it's usually, you know, a pretty common group. There's Marcus Semyon, Chris Taylor, Jose Ramirez, Kevin Gossmann, Chris Bryant,
Starting point is 00:21:04 Chris Bryant, Marcus Stroman, all the big time short stops that are going to be available in free agency. But today on Control the Zone, our podcast on Patreon, we discussed well over 20 players who no one's really talking about right now, but we think could be potential targets
Starting point is 00:21:21 for the Mariners this winter. Unfortunately, we don't have time to get to everyone, but we're going to give you a few names to mull over. And if you want to hear the full list, head on over to patreon.com forward slash control the zone. Check out episode 6. 66 of control the zone. So Colby,
Starting point is 00:21:37 I'll let you start because you brought forth a ton of names for this list, whereas I only put together 10 and you had one of them on your list. So who's someone you want to talk about on today's show? Sure. Let's start with a guy who I think I talked about last on CTZ, but is one of my favorites. So how about Jonathan VR? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:04 of the of the new york met's this year yeah he's he's been good i mean it's surprisingly good almost 263 339 460 uh he's got 18 home runs and 119 games he does have seven steel or 11 steals but he's been caught seven times you know the last two years he hasn't been a big base dealer but in 2019 he stole 40 bags had 33 doubles and 24 home runs while hitting 274 339 453 uh wasn't good last year with the pay pandemic season, just flat out bad. I kind of have to toss that out. He's 30 years old.
Starting point is 00:22:40 He's going to be worth three wins this year. He's about average at second base defensively. Can stand at shortstop, you know, probably not where you want him to be, but he can stand over there and he can do the same at third base. Switch hitter, which is nice. And he brings a good speed power combo with, I would say, what classifies as average on base skills
Starting point is 00:23:02 and slightly above average contact skills. So that's a guy I really like. It's not sexy. If he's your starting second baseman, you know, nobody's going to throw a parade and be happy about that or thrilled about that. But it's a pretty solid player who's probably going to come in at, you know, three years, somewhere between $5 to $7 million a year. Yeah, I really like the idea of VR.
Starting point is 00:23:26 He was someone that we had talked about very little about during the off season. But I remember having at least one to do. discussion about him on probably an episode of CTZ at some point. One guy that I really like, and this isn't really a super sexy name, but he's been one of the more underrated relievers and baseball for kind of a while now. Dylan Floro of the Miami Marlins, not a high strikeout guy,
Starting point is 00:23:55 but he generates a lot of weak contact. He's had success dating back to his days in LA and Tampa. and now with Miami. And Miami is a very interesting team to link up with via trade in general. A lot of big names there that you could go after. But I think Floro, especially with this bullpen, it's a very good bullpen. But bullpins are volatile. You know, it's a fluid situation every year where you just,
Starting point is 00:24:24 you don't really know who's going to, who's going to stay consistent, who's not, who's going to pop, who won't. You can't really rely on that. And I think the Mariners should absolutely. continue to add to their bullpen and add legitimate talent to the bullpen, not just, you know, flyers like Paul Seawald, etc. Except, you know, Derry Depot has been very good at identifying those guys and, and his team has been very good at developing them as a pro level.
Starting point is 00:24:51 But, you know, I would like to see, you know, maybe an established reliever added. And that's probably something we'll talk more about either tomorrow or on Friday's show. but I think Floro is really one of those guys that, yeah, he's not super exciting. He's not going to give you all the strikeouts and stuff, but teams aren't really able to score off of him because he just generates so much weak contact all the time. Yeah, I'm with you. You know, you still want to add those flyers. You still want to take those shots because you never know when you're going to pop a Steckin Rider or, you know, a Seewald or an Austin Adams or Connor Sads or whatever. Somebody can help you.
Starting point is 00:25:29 and somebody probably is going to help you out of that group. But I'm with you. I would like to see them spend a little bit of money to just really nail down this bullpen. You're going to get Ken Giles back. You're going to get Munoz back. You have Castillo and Seewald and Steckenrider and Mischavitz and Swanson. They're all under club control, Johann Ramirez. But let's build an even stronger bullpen.
Starting point is 00:25:49 And one of the guys on my list was Colin McHugh, who has been just excellent this year. 146 ERA, a 214-5, 11.2 strikeouts, for nine, just two walks for nine. He's been, I mean, almost perfect. He was pretty, he opted out last year, so he did not play last year. And in 2019, he was, he was pretty bad overall. For a reliever, four, four, three, fifth, not, not anything to write home about. But in 2018, he was great.
Starting point is 00:26:20 In 2017, he was pretty darn good in just 12 games as a starter. So, yeah, this is a guy who has started some games. He can give you some length. but he can also pitch in high leverage situations. He can be the bridge guy. It's just a versatile player who can throw, I mean, 31 games this year. He's thrown 55 innings. So he's going more than one inning when he goes out there.
Starting point is 00:26:40 I really like the idea of Colin McHugh. And even if you have to throw him $6, $7, $8 million a year, I think he's worth it. So let's talk about one more guy here. And this is a guy that is definitely a big name. A lot of our listeners will probably recognize this name. That's Wilson Contreras, catcher from the Chicago Cubs, who offers a little bit of
Starting point is 00:27:03 versatility standing in the outfield. He mostly can just stand out there. It's one of those situations, but a good athlete, nevertheless, good hitter, having kind of a down year this year, and he's 29 years old, and he is going to be a free agent after next season. And the Cubs, as you may know, have traded pretty much everyone that they could from their world series winning team a few years ago. Contreras is one of the few guys left over from that from those teams and he's still, you know,
Starting point is 00:27:37 really solid defensive catcher, an above average hitter relative to the position. And he's probably not going to cost you a ton and he's an established catcher, which you don't really have right now. Tom Murphy hasn't been able to bounce back the way that you thought he would. Luis Terence has been good at the plate, for the most part, at least in terms of the power numbers, but his defense is still questionable to say the least. And you haven't seen anything from Cal Raleigh that makes you confident that he's going to be a starter for you or even a member of your major league roster right away.
Starting point is 00:28:16 He hasn't been very good and continues to struggle. He had another strikeout today looking. So I think catcher is one of the more underwere. of positions this team needs to upgrade at this offseason and they could go big with it with with contraris who's one of the better catchers in all of baseball again like i said having kind of a down year and uh going to be a free agent after after next year and he's going to be in the final year of arbitration he's probably going to make a decent chunk of change that i'm sure the cubs are probably not going to want to pay next year so you you're you are going to have some leverage and trade discussions there and i think you might be able to get contraris uh for a pretty uh team friendly deal, I would say. You trade in Zach Deloche for him? Top prospect, Zach Deloche? Never. But yes. Yes.
Starting point is 00:29:05 To answer your question, yes. Ignore the meme for a minute. You trade in Brandon Williamson for him? I consider it. Yeah. Is that about the line, do you think? That's probably the line. I'm probably not getting into Kirby and any of those guys. Oh, no, no, no.
Starting point is 00:29:22 Yeah. probably not Matt Brash or Harry Ford or anyone like that. But yeah, and I think that would make sense for the Cubs too. I think the Cubs would probably, I think maybe, you know, Brandon Williamson and I don't know,
Starting point is 00:29:39 someone in the Victor LaBrata range could probably, you know, at least start the conversation at that point. He's, like I said, he's making money. It's coming off of kind of a down year for him.
Starting point is 00:29:51 and the Cubs aren't competing and he's 29 years old. They're not going to try to build around a 30 year old catcher who's possibly declining in his play. But I think that's absolutely a shot that the Mariners should try to take.
Starting point is 00:30:08 But really, I'll take any catcher at this time. The catcher position has been kind of not great for the mariners this year. Yon Gomes, baby. Yes. I know you love Yonge Gomes. the main thing for me though is is can Wilson Contreras catch a relay throw? Because Tom Murphy certainly can't. Luis Teren certainly can't and Cowralli certainly can't.
Starting point is 00:30:33 Now, to be fair today, the ball to Murphy did kind of bounce off the backside of Yordaan Alvarez, but still, come on. Why does this continue to happen? What does this continue to happen? Yeah, it's not something they're good at, but yeah, the contraris thing is good. I know some people out there are going to throw out J.T. Real Muto and be like, oh, they had to give up Sixto Sanchez and Jorge Alfaro. Well, A, Alfaro hasn't been very good, but B,
Starting point is 00:31:03 Real Muto had two years of club control left, or three, two or three years of club control left when he was traded. Contreras has won. Also, wasn't J.T. Real Muto hitting like 300 at the time? In his last year in Miami, Real Muto was sitting. 277, 340, 484.
Starting point is 00:31:23 Yeah, and so pretty close. While the power numbers for Contreras are still good, but he's not hitting that right now. So it's just, that's a much, much different player profile right there. If you're trying to look at the real muto deal as a benchmark for that, that's not what you should be looking at for a Wilson Contreras trade. It's, it's definitely, it's, it's something that they can afford and not have to break the bake for. and for a legitimate catching option,
Starting point is 00:31:52 that's kind of rare. That's kind of rare. You guys heard it here first. Wilson Contreras for Tom Murphy and Zach Deloche. Coming at you in December, hopefully if there's a CBA. Yeah, yeah. Write that down.
Starting point is 00:32:11 Yeah, that's a thing that I'm sure we're going to have to face at a certain point, the CBA talk and all that stuff. but we will we will certainly cross that bridge when we come to it. That's something that I that's a headache that I wish not to have today and instead enjoy today's win
