On today's show, we'll tell you why Matt Chapman is unlikely to be on the Mariners radar this summer.
Colby, hit it.
You are Locked-on Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Ahoy, sailors, it is Tuesday, June 23rd, 2026.
My name is Tadangazolus, and I'm joined as always by my co-coes Colby Patnode.
This episode is brought to you by Odu.
Great organizations win because operations matter, and that's why you should get
O-Doo. Try for free today at Odo.com slash locked on. That's ODO.com slash L-O-C-K-E-D-O-N.
Today we'll get you set for the Mariners upcoming series with the Pirates. We'll also talk about the latest
update on the fan vote for the All-Star Game starters and how that has completely gone off the rails.
Thanks a large part to a certain fan base north of the border. But we'll start with some trade talk
today. Now, we're not really sure how many sellers there are going to be at the trade deadline this summer. However, we do know that the San Francisco Giants who are very bad want to offload some of their biggest contracts, if possible. That would include Willie Adamas and Raphael Devers and Matt Chapman. And for a long time, there has been at least a decently sized group of Mariners fans out there that have wanted Matt Chapman.
on the Mariners.
And so this would seemingly provide another opportunity for the mariner's to bring Matt Chapman into the fold.
But there are a lot of complications that come with Matt Chapman.
Specifically, I think the number one thing is the contract.
He's making $25 million this year.
And he still has four more guaranteed years after the season at $25 million apiece.
So he's owed $100 million over the next four seasons,
and that's not even including the rest of the money that he's set to make
for the remainder of 2026.
The mayors are also trying to figure out what they have in Cold Emerson right now.
They're trying to figure out what they have in third base, J.P. Crawford.
So I'm not sure if there is necessarily a clear fit there either for Chapman.
And that's not even talking about some of the,
issues that Chapman has had on the field this year, specifically in the batters box, Colby.
Yeah, Matt Chapman is just, he's not a good fit for the Seattle Mariners.
He's 33 years old.
You're going to pay him $100 million through his age 36 season, something the Mariners have
never been interested in doing with any outside player.
He's hitting a ton of ground balls.
it's been a steady increase in ground ball percentage over the last five years.
And he's not hitting the ball hard this year at all.
Now, in the past, he's hit the ball hard, but this year he's not.
And obviously, if you hit the ball on the ground a lot and you're not hitting the ball hard,
you're going to be prone to long struggles because those typically turn into outs.
So you have an aging player with $100 million left on his contract after this year,
not to mention whatever you have to pay him for this year.
He plays the position you might not have a question at.
Maybe in 2027, but, you know, the Mariners want to see what JP looks like at third base.
We don't know if it's going to be good or not so far.
It's been solid.
But, you know, it's only been four games.
I think the Mariners would rather pay JP Crawford, you know, two-year extension, three-year extension at, you know, $15 million a year or whatever it is, right?
then pay Matt Chapman, who's older,
whose bat at ball profile is concerning,
who's trending the wrong direction in the batters box.
He's really struggling against fastballs.
I don't think they're going to want to pay that guy $100 million
when they could pay J.P. Crawford, half of that to be the third basement.
And Crawford might just be a better player right now than Chapman.
Now, Chapman, again, the defense is still very good,
but it is not a lead anymore.
And the offensive trends are concerning.
He, a lot of his power is to left center field.
That does not play well at Team Mobile Park.
Go ask, Hey, Oscar Hernandez about that.
And again, he's just hitting a ton of ground balls.
So there is a lot of concerning red flags here.
The fact that the Giants want to get out from this contract,
as badly as they do, that they're standing on top of the Golden Gate Bridge with a megaphone screaming.
This guy's available.
Come get this guy.
Come get this guy.
That should be a bit of a red flag.
Again, he's 33 years old.
The Mariners do not pay.
you know, plus 30s, $100 million.
They just don't do that.
And you would be paying for his age 34, 35, 35, 36, 37 season if you took on this contract.
So it's just not going to happen.
He doesn't fit the Mariners mold.
He doesn't fit the timeline.
And by the way, if you're worried about, you know, keeping Logan Gilbert and Brian
Wu and Bryce Miller, I think you have to sacrifice one of them to fit Chapman's remaining
contract on your books.
And I don't think that's a risk that the Mariners are willing to take, especially with
the way Logan's been pitching now.
Again, maybe you can pay for Logan just by getting Randy and JP off the books this
winter, but you got to pay for Wu.
And we know the mayors are not going to extend themselves financially.
So if they acquire Matt Chapman, that's probably the piece they acquire this winter or two.
Like they're going to count that as their offseason.
and Chapman is just not that guy that you, you know, you fire that bullet for.
So you're just asking for trouble.
And I don't see any kind of reason.
I don't see any kind of smart baseball decision making that would go behind acquiring Matt Chapman.
And even if you swapped like Leo or Luis Castillo, right?
Like, okay, they're making about the same money this year and next year,
but you're still on the hook for three years and $75 million after.
Yeah.
So I think the only way this could possibly.
work as if the Giants eat most of that contract.
And even then, do you really want a 34, 35-year-old third baseman who's declining
offensively and defensively on your, that's your answer at third base in your contention
window?
I don't see it.
How much am I paying him at that point?
I guess that's the main question there.
Right.
I mean, I guess if you're paying him like $10 million a year, fine.
But again, the Giants want to trade him to get the contract off their books.
so they're probably looking for, you know.
Well, and what are you willing to give up in order to lower that cost down the road?
Nothing.
Nothing.
I'd rather roll with J.P. Crawford for the rest of this year, considering the cost.
And I think, you know, next year, Chapman probably going to be a better player than JP next year.
I mean, I guess, but the stat line is concerning.
He's not hitting fastballs.
He's not hitting the ball hard.
he's putting the ball on the ground more than ever.
Like, those are real legitimate, tangible things that you can look at,
statistically, that paint a major red flag about Matt Chapman.
He's a 104 WRC Plus this year.
This is the first season that he's slugging under 400.
I think he's at 376 right now, last time I checked.
386.
But he's still slugging, you know, at a sub-400 clip.
That's concerning.
And, you know, he plays in a fairly comparable hitter suppressive ballpark as well.
So, you know, you take him from Oracle Park, put him in T-Mobile Park.
I think you're going to see similar results.
Acquiring Matt Chapman, like this current version of Matt Chapman with his contract and all the Aides left, that is like a family of five buying a two-door sports car when they need a minivan.
like it's just a it's almost like a status acquisition like oh look at us we got matt chapman
but are you really that much better i i i don't know i honestly don't know like like is chapman
is still a good player yes yes i think he's a good player uh especially defensively he's still
really good defensively he his glove has declined where he's not like the best
defensive player in all of baseball yeah you know but like he's still really good over there
and that would obviously help right because
even if even if what we've seen over the last four games from jp is actually real and he's actually
an average third baseman over there chapman would still be an upgrade over jp defensively
but we're not operating in a vacuum here you got to take into account the years that are involved
the money that is involved in how the mariners financially operate just the reality of the situation
if louis castillo had because he has one more guaranteed year after this year on his deal
possibly two if he throws 180 innings in 2027.
Very easy plateau to side step for the acquiring team.
Yeah.
If he had three guaranteed years to Matt Chapman's four, maybe I could see it.
But I think even at that point, the Mariners would just opt to get out from under that money as soon as possible.
I just don't think that's something that the Mariners want to attach themselves to.
I would just say this to wrap up on it.
We have to, we can sit here and be like, well, ownership should spend more money and yes, yes, yes, blah.
We get it.
We understand that.
We agree with you.
If you don't think we agree with you, you haven't been paying attention all these years.
But we operate in reality that we have, not the one that we want.
And so let me ask you this totally full question.
Would you be willing to trade a Brian Wu extension for Matt Chapman this year?
No.
No.
And that's probably what we would.
And that's on top of what it would take to get Chapman, which probably wouldn't be a ton, but still.
So, yeah, would you be willing to trade a Bryce Miller extension to get Matt Chapman this year?
Is Matt Chapman so much better than J.P. Crawford this year that you would trade, you know, Bryce Miller extension two years down the line?
No.
All right.
Well, coming up, we're going to switch gears here.
We're going to talk about the All-Star Game vote
and why it has become just an absolute joke in just a moment.

So fans have been voting for the All-Star Game starters for the last couple of weeks,
and we have the latest update on those results.
Not looking particularly great for your favorite Mariners,
though Julio Rodriguez and Randy Rosarena have entered the top six in outfield voting,
which would get them to the final round to determine who will be the three starting outfielder
for the American League.
outside of that though
Luke Rayley has fallen a little bit
in the voting he went from
13th to 15th
an outfield voting
Dom Canzon 7th right now
in D.H. voting
J.P. Crawford is 10th
I think he was 7th the last time they put out
an update and shortstop voting
second base voting
Cole Young has fallen a little bit to 8th
Brennan Donovan for some reason
is 6 third base
right now. First
based voting. Josh Naylor is seventh
and catcher voting. Cal Raleigh
is somehow six despite
hardly playing and that's
kind of not even the craziest
result in that
in that position.
It is not. We're actually not really doing this segment
because of anything Mariners related.
No Mariners deserve to start the
All-Star game.
Randy maybe.
If we break it down
specifically to left fielders,
he's probably still second behind Bellinger
but sure, we can make an argument for him.
Sure.
But yeah, we're not upset that nobody's winning the fan vote for the Meritors.
Okay.
No, no, let's make that abundantly clear.
I just kind of want to rant about how Blue Jays fans have just completely made a mockery of this whole thing
and how Major League Baseball just continues to allow this to happen.
It seems pretty clear that Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
is going to be the starting first baseman for the American League.
he is crushing the first base vote right now
and obviously he would go to a final round
where he and it looks like Ben Rice
will square off much more deserving
yeah much more
multiple first basemen are much more
is at best the seventh best first baseman
in the American League this year
Vladdy
Kurtz Contreras Rice
yeah Vladdy has a 107
WRC plus sitting for a high
average he's getting on basaltan he's just not slugging at all he's got four home runs this year
through 74 games uh he is not deserving of starting the yallster game ben rice is more deserving
munitaka murakami even with his injury has has been more deserving nick kurtz is more deserving
pelaunzo is more deserving wilson charres he's more deserving yeah um yeah vladimir grero
junior though is probably going to start the all-star game at first base for the toronto blue days
because fans solely pick the starters,
which is a joke.
And they got to do something about the Blue Jays aspect of this.
Because it happens year after year.
Now,
we haven't seen it at least,
you know,
as far as I can remember.
And, you know,
I don't really keep up with the All-Star Game voting
or the All-Star game in general,
especially over the last few years.
So I'm not really 100% sure.
But we haven't seen it get abused to the point
where like guys who don't deserve to start are starting but it seems like that's going to happen
this time around here with flaty it's just look you got a whole entire country that is voting
that is primarily voting for one team compared to you know 29 other fan bases right or in the
american league 14 other fan bases um so and it's just it's not like look ernie come
is leading second base voting he should get in yeah that's totally fine he should be he should be
starting on second base yeah that's totally fine i don't have an issue with that what i have an issue with
is again vladdie's starting at first base the fact that alexandro kirk who's played
nine games this year at this point i know he just recently got back from injury but before he got
hurt he had played like six games yeah and he just recently got reinstated from the injured list like
just a few days ago.
So he's only played nine,
10 something games.
He's likely,
very likely going to make it to the final round of voting for catchers.
He isn't going to win.
I don't think.
Shealing Lairs is likely going to win that vote,
thankfully and deservedly so.
But the fact that Dylan Dingler or Adley Rutchman
is not going to make the final round
and even have a shot to compete with Shaylinglears to start.
That's a joke.
Cosmo Okamoto is second and third base voting.
He's not a good year.
He's not the second best third baseman in the American League this year, though.
Andres Jimenez, though, is the other, well, there's a couple of.
Yeah, that's the other egregious one.
But Andres Jimenez, like Alejandro Kirk, he's not going to win,
but he's going to make it to the final round against Bobby Witt Jr.,
who's going to smoke him, deservedly so.
but Kevin McGonagulls not going to get to the final round.
Coulson Montgomery is not going to get to the final round.
Like, what are we doing?
You know?
And then George Springer is second in DH voting.
And now he hasn't played as few games as Alej Hunter Kirk,
but he's also been hurt a couple of times this year.
He's misconsiderable time.
And he's also been mediocre.
Yeah.
It's time for Major League Baseball to look at this.
Because like you said, you have one entire kind.
contrary voting for the same nine guys versus, you know, 14 other fan bases, splitting votes.
I think fan voting can be a part of it, but I also think you need to start incorporating
players and have them, you know, private about and they need to be weighed differently.
The fan vote should account for, you know, the Mariners did their top 50 players.
Like fan voting was only like a third of the formula of the formula there.
Like I don't know.
The NBA does like a percentage, like it counts towards a percentage.
Right. It should be weighted to try and, you know,
curb this because again it's not so much Vladdy starting at first base like he's going to win that
like Jimenez Kirk Springer they're not going to make the all-star team they're going to get smoked in
the finals in the final voting and they're going to be left off the roster because the reserves are
picked by by you know however they pick the reserves the manager just because you make the final round
doesn't mean that you're an all-star yeah not at all but Vlad making it he's going to win that
fan vote in a more deserving first basement is going to get snubbed because he's going to be the
starter which means they can only carry X number of first baseman whereas if like Kurtz won the fan
vote or whatever right.
Kurtz was going to make it either way.
So now there's another spot open for a deserving player.
Now part of this is like the All Star game is just about seeing the names and Vlad is certainly
a name.
So that would be one thing.
But like we're talking about George Springer, 36 year old George Springer.
We're talking about Alejandro Kirk who's played 10 games this year.
like Cal Raleigh is a more deserving All-Star than Alejandro Kirk.
And neither of those guys deserve to be within 100 miles of the All-Star game.
So it's just one of those things where it's like, look, ultimately, my guess is Major League Baseball says,
that's not a big deal.
The Blue Jays only had two starters.
And it's like, yeah, but Vlad Guerrero took away, will ultimately have taken away a play
or a all-star spot from somebody like Murakami or Kurtz or Contreras or Alonzo.
And it doesn't seem like a big deal because the All-Star game.
in the grand scheme of things not a big deal i don't want my players playing in it i i don't see any
upside for it but it matters when you talk about arbitration when you talk about contract extensions
when you talk about free agency all-star appearances all-star games like these things unfortunately
do get factored in so there is a very real world monetary value placed on going to the all-star
game and when you allow players who don't deserve it to even be in the conversation
it makes things seem cheap and it makes things seem unimportant and that's what we have right now
is the Blue Jays fan base.
And again, it's a popularity contest.
Okay, fine, whatever.
I understand that.
But then we can't have all-star appearances or all, it can't be tied to, you know, contract extensions.
It can't be tied to incentives and Hall of Fame voting and like all of this because it's very
clearly a flawed process.
And to this right here is exhibit A.
Like the,
the Blue Jays are going to have seven finalists in the All-Star voting.
None of them deserve to be in the All-Star game,
except for Ernie Clint.
Funny enough.
Now, Akamoto could make it at their base.
That'd be fine.
But like, if it's about stars,
if that's your rationale for having Vlad Graham
be the first baseman, then Jose Ramirez should be the third baseman.
I mean, Miguel Vargas, Josh Young, more deserving.
than Okamoto.
100%.
So yeah, you're just,
there are going to be players who are going to be left off of the All-Star game roster
because of this fan voting thing and because there are going to be players who get in
who don't deserve to be in at all because of the fan vote.
And that means there's one less open spot for somebody who actually deserves to be there.
And if Blue Jay fans,
you know,
think that they're immune to this or whatever,
I only ask you how upset were you when Randy Rosarana made the All-Star team last year instead of George Springer.
You remember how upset you were when Springer didn't make the All-Star team last year?
Rightfully so, by the way?
There you go.
It happens to every fan base.
You're not immune to this.
And it's just a stupid way to fix it.
And Blue Jay fans should be rewarded for going to the ballot box or whatever.
Fine.
But it doesn't have to be the entire determining factor.
Player polls should matter.
Sports writer should vote on this.
as to, by the way, should, like, opposing broadcasters,
they should have a ballot and they should not be allowed to vote for anybody on the team that they call
and just do a big mix, 25% weight to each group, and then that's how you decide your starters.
And honestly, the whole team, if we're being honest.
Like, why does the manager just get to pick his favorite reliever out of his bullpen who's got a three and a half ERA
when this guy over here has got a one, two, five ERA?
But he pitches for a bad team, so he has no shot to make it.
You know what I mean?
So the whole All-Star game is busted anyways.
But certainly you're not going to fix it with apathy.
And apathy is what you're going to get when, you know, Alejandro Kirk and Andres Jimenez are finalist for the starting jobs at the All-Star game this year.
All right.
Coming up, the Mariners are kicking off a series with the Pirates in Pittsburgh in just a few hours.
We'll get you set for that in just a moment.
But first a reminder of this episode of the Locktime Marys podcast is brought to you by
Odu. Running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems that were
never designed to work together. One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales,
and somehow none of them talk to each other. That's where Odu comes in. Odo is an all-in-one
business management software that brings every part of your business together in one powerful platform.
From sales and accounting to inventory and marketing, everything works in one place,
helping your team move faster, stay organized, and focus on growing the business instead of managing
software. The best organizations know that success isn't just about talent. It's about having everyone
working towards the same goal. And that's true in sports just like it is in business. You know,
when we're talking about the Mariners, we talk about how they have the same philosophy at the
majors as they do all the way down at the lower levels of the miners. Even with all these different
factions, the organization itself is one. They have a vision. They stick to it. And last season showed us
what's possible when everyone is working from the same playbook. Great organizations win because
operations matter.

Marries kicking off a series with the pirates here in just a few hours.
And the good news that the Mariners are going to avoid Paul Skeens by a day.
He's going to start the first Pirates game after this series ends.
The Mariners instead will see Mitch Keller tonight, former All-Star.
They'll see Braxton Ashcraft tomorrow who's been very good this season.
And they'll also see Bubba Chandler, once upon a time, one of the best prospects and the entire.
entire game.
I've had some issues with the walks as of late, though.
Expecting a roster move here,
probably around the time that we finished recording,
probably around the time that you're watching this
or shortly after you're watching this.
Expecting Randy or Rosaranda to be reinstated from the injured list.
My guess is that the corresponding move will not be Rob Ruff Snyder.
It will probably be Connor Joe.
if I had to guess, the former pirates.
So no potential for a Connor Joe revenge series,
because I know we're all looking forward to that.
Not that I think Joe was even going to be able to get an opportunity here
against the pirates with three righty starters.
Also, some quick news before we get more into the series.
Today on Brock and Salk, Logan Gilbert,
confirmed that he will, as we speculated yesterday,
he will be piggybacking with Emerson Hancock on Saturday in Cleveland against the Guardians.
Gilbert will start that game and then Hancock will come out of the bullpen.
Fans are overwhelmingly supportive of the decision based on my quick gleaming of Twitter and my inbox and the group chat that I am unfortunately a part of.
So, yeah, cool, awesome. Go Mariners.
so yeah
statement on the piggyback
are you excited to see your old
your old buddy Johann Ramirez on the series
he's good he's pretty good
he's having a solid year
yeah he was pretty good last year
I mean surprise
hey what's Jake Bowers doing
is having a very good year
fourth and also voting
Colby somebody should probably hire me
I tend to know what I'm talking about
anyways
Jake Bowers
bottom 10 position player
with at least 100 played appearances
in the jury to give them enough time
I don't say not my fault
they gave up on them too soon
Jake Lamb would be an all-star
they'd give them more at-bats than you know a few years ago
but anyways
yeah
Pirates kind of a very similar
team to the Mariners in that they're both
mediocre
good offense though
fourth and WRC plus this year
tied with the nationals.
Yeah.
Brandon Lowe,
is that another player
I've pounded the table for?
Oh,
well,
imagine that.
I believe I also
did it.
I think I also did it.
I said,
well,
look at that.
They traded Joey Barts
on the Braves the other day.
Yeah,
yeah,
Hunter Stratton,
Stratton,
yeah.
Did they have letter Stratton?
No,
you're thinking of Chris,
who they used to have.
No, no, no, no,
they did have Hunter Stratton.
I'm looking at this page right now.
He was there.
There you go.
Anyways,
it's way too much time mentioning Joey Bart,
who's not even on this roster.
Or Stratton,
who's also in AAA right now.
I was looking at roster resource aside.
Anyway,
the pirates aren't throwing a lefty
against the Mariners in the series,
so that's good.
They do have to be lefties in their bullpen,
though.
Two really good.
Soto and Sisk are both really good.
Who's the third one?
Mason Montgomery.
Oh, yes.
He throws very, very hard.
striking out.
lot of guys right now walking a lot of guys i believe right or he got that under yeah yeah yeah so again
still kind of a not a great matchup we know we know how good dan wilson is is at working those
midgame matchups though so i'm sure that'll be fine we'll see if uh randy gets activated today
that's kind of expected to happen like you said we'll see if can zones in the lineup um you know
he said he was fine uh but my my based on
how the last couple weeks have gone. He will be
available off the bench tonight and
tomorrow morning he will be placed on the IL
just you know
if I'm learning how to parse
Dan Wilson a little bit that that's what
that means. So yeah we'll see
if he's in there or not obviously that would be a big
loss if they missed him.
Luke Rayleigh. Dan Wilson's available
off of the bench as Pete Carroll's
is equivalent to Pete Carroll's legit
yeah legit he's got a
he's got a legit knee
he's got a legit ankle yeah.
it's good four to six awesome um so yeah Luke Rayleigh will be in the starting lineup for the first time in like a week eight days yeah
probably look yeah so we'll see how that goes but yeah they're going to throw righties uh good opportunity to get game one tonight
Keller's really struggled um but you know it's kind of pointless to look at matchups and talk because
it doesn't matter whether the mariners win or lose has very little to do with who they play
Pittsburgh's pretty solid team.
They're in a bit of a slump recently,
and oddly enough, they can't win Paul Skeen starts.
I saw a stat from MLB that
when Skeens allows three hits or more,
the pirates are one in ten.
Yeah, which means schemes basically has to throw no hitter
for the pirates to win the start.
Kind of a Felix Hernandez thing going on there.
But the Marys are not facing schemes,
unless they do a switcheroo.
on Thursday.
But yeah, they're not facing skeins.
Ashcraft, like you said, having a good year.
Pittsburgh, a lot of arms, they could throw out you out of the bullpen.
A lot of velocity coming out of that bullpen.
I look forward to the biggest leverage out of the night going to Rob Ruff Snyder,
trying to catch up to 100 miles an hour from Soto.
That should be fun.
Hey, you know what? Randy should be in the lineup.
Canzone, we'll see.
Probably the closest to a healthy lineup we've seen from the Mariners in a long,
long time. So we'll see what it looks like.
But, oh yeah, and it's a Cole Young homecoming.
Oh, yeah. There you go. Big series.
Yeah. All right. Well, we'll see how it goes, but that is going to do it for our show.
