We're going to talk about the game last night, including some interesting stuff we saw from Emerson Hancock
Starting point is 00:01:02 and talk about these final three games with the Dodgers that really don't mean much, quite frankly. But the Mariners get their 90th win last night is the first time that they've had 90 wins in the regular season since 2022. They also did it in 2021, of course, didn't make the playoffs that time, which is crazy to think about in hindsight. And if they win one more game here over the final three, they will have their highest win total since 2003 when they won 93 games. so that's pretty cool and uh you know obviously they already wrapped up the division they didn't need to get to 90 wins to wrap up the division but getting to 90 wins is still a really cool milestone and that's usually a number that says you know you had a really really really good regular season and all you needed to have happen was for you to win 17 of 18 that's right so yeah it wasn't a uh an easy 90 uh let's let's say that way but it is 90 all the same. And so, yes, it also guarantees that you will have a win percentage of at least 55.5%, which is, at last check, higher than 54%, which still was on the table, technically, had they gone 0 and 4.
Starting point is 00:02:18 So there you go. The 54% meme will not live. Well, it'll live, but like you cannot apply it to this team. So 90 wins is really, you know, really well done. and it's kind of funny. You know, you kind of have to win 90 to make the playoffs if you're the Mariners. You're not getting in with 85, 86. 90 is the benchmark.
Starting point is 00:02:40 And you hit 90, you feel pretty good about making the playoffs most years, especially now with the expanded format, although they did hit 90 in, you know, 2021 and didn't get in. That was before they added playoff team. Right. Yeah. So, yeah, if you hit 90, you're going to make the playoffs most year, most years. And it is like a, it is a,
Starting point is 00:03:00 differentiator between like, you know, you had a pretty good regular season to you had a very good to great regular season. It doesn't seem like there would be a big difference between 89 and 90, but much like 59 and 60, it just kind of, you know, hits a little different. Plus, we like round numbers. So yeah, yeah, 90 wins is pretty sweet. Yeah. And, you know, for a Thursday night in Seattle where really nothing is on the line, the Mariners locked everything up, including the first round by after the Tigers beat the Guardians right before the start of the game.
Starting point is 00:03:37 You know, it's a packed ballpark. You're playing against the worst team in baseball, and the atmosphere, you were there at the ballpark. The atmosphere looked like it was a pretty similar vibe to the last two nights. Like, it's pretty cool. Yeah. Again, I wasn't at the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:03:54 The last two nights, well, last night it was. But, you know, the clinching days. I wasn't at the ballpark. So don't really have any of the conclusion. compare it to. I can say the vibe was somewhat similar to the game after the last time they clinched a playoff spot after the Cal Rainmaker where pretty chill. Like everybody's just relaxed and, you know, there's no weight on the outcome of the game or anything like that. There was still definitely some, you know, there's still hype in the ballpark. And it was, it got pretty loud at times. A lot of people still very
Starting point is 00:04:30 focused on the game, like not a lot of wandering conversations and all that. But definitely not like, you know, not like the 2022 game where they clinch. And I assume not at all like the games from the last couple of nights. But yeah, it was a really good crowd about 40,000 people. It was kind of a weird game. It felt like the game we were watching. It felt a lot like an NFL preseason game where you just kind of get the young guys some reps, you know, the starters go out there.
Starting point is 00:05:01 first series or two. Yeah, JP comes out on the fourth. I think Julio came out in the fifth or six. Right. And so, you know, still no Harry Ford at bat because why would you? Screw that guy, I guess. But yeah, so it felt like a lot like a preseason game. But, you know, the intensity was a little bit higher than that, but really not much.
Starting point is 00:05:25 You know, so it was kind of a weird vibe. It wasn't a bad vibe by any stretch. The vibe was good. It was just kind of a chilled and relaxed, but also still invested type of vibe. Because you go to Mariner games, you know, in late September.
Starting point is 00:05:43 Usually they're out of it, right? And everyone's just kind of like, yeah, or we're chilled or relaxed. Or usually like they're on the bubble, you know? Right. And everything's anxious. And so it was a different kind of game. It was similar to the hangover game,
Starting point is 00:05:57 what was supposed to be the hangover game in, 2022 and it was actually the A's who were terrible that day, not the Mariners. So yeah, it was like that. It was kind of like a preseason, you know, NFL game as well. Although, to be fair, the Rockies
Starting point is 00:06:14 played their starters. It's just, you know, the Rocky starters are, you know, the Jacksonville, Jack Wars. They're not good. No. There were a couple balls that were hit to the infield that they didn't like scoop up properly. Like that, yeah, it was just a mess. Yeah. That's a bad team who's
Starting point is 00:06:31 definitely ready for the season to end but you know whatever uh it was it was interesting i'll say this the the interesting thing to me is obviously you know a lot of people tracking the seahawks game as they're they're watching the mariners game and you were texting me updates uh because you're not a real baseball fan uh but yeah so last night last night so i had i had the seahawks game on this monitor i had the marries game over on this monitor i'm watching both but yeah i mean being like I was more locked into the Seahawks game last night than the Marrars game because nothing's on the line. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:08 Let's be honest. You're playing the Rockies. So you're like, yeah, it's like I'm like, they got this. They got this. They take Julio out early.
Starting point is 00:07:16 They take Chypey out. No disrespect to Leo and Cole Young who. It is really nice. It is really nice to watch the Mariners and not really care of what happens. Knowing that they have everything locked up. Like there's a difference between that and obviously, you know, they're out of it.
Starting point is 00:07:31 and I don't care what happens. Yeah. Yeah. So, yeah, but I do think this is pretty cool and I think it was pretty telling. So I had pulled up the game on my phone. I wanted to watch the last two drives, it turns out. And I saw them tie it. And then you texted me that they were lining up for a field goal,
Starting point is 00:07:53 that they had made it. Spoilers. Like a minute before I saw it on my phone. Oh, wow. I mean terrible but there was you know you could kind of hear a cheer going out throughout the ballpark and so I kind of had assumed like oh they made it
Starting point is 00:08:10 and then they put the score board up on the or they put the final score up on the board and all that and there was a sea hawks chant like you know sea hawk like that thing it never really got going like it was it was interesting and I just think of you know the number of times I've gone to a September baseball game and after the game leaving the stadium, people were chanting Seahawks because they wanted to,
Starting point is 00:08:35 you know, baseball's over, blah, blah, it wasn't that people were disinterested in the Seahawks game. It was just like, look at what's happening on the field, right?
Starting point is 00:08:44 Who cares about that game in Arizona? It's more like, oh yeah, that's cool that that's also happening. Yeah, awesome. I'm happy about that. Cool.
Starting point is 00:08:52 Yeah. Don't care. Like baseball. Look, baseball. Yeah. And that would just not have happened. I think I read it.
Starting point is 00:08:58 I think I read it. tweet, maybe you can verify this, that when the Seahawks chant broke out, I think Randy was coming up and the Seahawks chance turned into Randy, Randy. Yeah. I think the Seahawks chant was like, I could hear it noticeably
Starting point is 00:09:13 for about 15 seconds, and then it was right back to the baseball game. And like, look, Ty and I are both Seahawk fans, even though he won't admit it. We're both Mariner fans. We can root for both teams at the same time without having some kind of stupid rivalry between the fan bases.
Starting point is 00:09:29 like most of us do. But there is something to be said about like, hey, you know, Seattle is turning into a baseball town. And they had an opportunity to really make that the case after the 2022 season. They failed, unfortunately. They could ride the momentum. This year might be different. But it just struck me as like, you know, last year if this happened or the year before, first of all, there wouldn't have been 40,000 people in the ballpark.
Starting point is 00:09:59 But that Seahawks chant probably would have gone on for two, three minutes. And this time it was 10, 15 seconds. And it was replaced by Randy, Randy pretty quick. So, I, you know, again, as somebody who roots for the Seahawks and the Mariners, I think the feud between the two fan bases who are only Mariner fans or only Seahawk fans is amongst the stupidest things about the Seattle fandom. It did strike me as pretty cool that, like, yes, the Seahawks. went down to a division rival on Thursday. They won that game on a walk-off field goal.
Starting point is 00:10:33 And people were just like, yeah, cool. You know, we're only up five to one right now. So I'm going to watch the baseball game if you could stop. So I just, I thought that was cool, you know. I mean, only five to one on the Rockies is like being up 50 to one, but sure. Sure. But I mean, like it was just, it was just kind of like this, we acknowledge that it happened. But that's like secondary.
Starting point is 00:10:57 We don't care that much. we want to watch the baseball game. And that's just a pretty stark shift in the mentality of, you know, Seattle sports fans, I think, just from the last couple of years even. So this team's got something. They've got the attention of even, you know, the average baseball fan. So I think that's a cool thing. All right.
Starting point is 00:11:20 So we're going to switch gears here. We're going to talk a little bit about Emerson Hancock, Gino Suarez, and the rest in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode. of the lockdown era's podcast is brought to you by rouguette. Fellas, you've probably heard of Viagra or Cialis. Maybe you've even tried them. Really nice tonight for Gino Swaraz last night, and he needed it. You know, he had the big home run in game two against the Rockies after, you know, rough game one. So that kind of got him in the right direction.
Starting point is 00:12:50 And then last night, he starts the game off three for three, wraps up the night, three for four, has a big two-run bomb to break the ice. you said that might have been the hardest hit ball you've ever seen live in person you text me just exploded off the bat yeah uh three rbi in total for gino last night three hard hit balls good night for gno he really needed that and uh yeah Randy also with a couple of hits he had a two run uh single single yeah just over or just off the glove of the uh leaping second baseman right yes yeah i remember right now and he had four hard hit balls on the night as well.
Starting point is 00:13:31 So a really nice night for Randy. So, you know, the two guys in your lineup who were struggling the most, both with some pretty big nights, you know, against the Rockies and against that pitching stuff, but still. It's the caveat with everything that happened in the series. It's the Rockies. We get it. But it didn't really matter who Gino was facing at Team Mobile Park over the last month.
Starting point is 00:13:49 It was bad. Yeah. Yeah. So obviously, you know, back to back, pretty good games for him after what I would call his rock bottom. It's really good to see. And yeah, Randy, Randy wasn't all that good, the first two games of the series, even against this terrible pitching. And so for him to have a pretty nice night, if you get those two guys going at the same time, like in this lineup, it's over. Like the American League doesn't stand a chance. Like that is insane to have that level of length in your lineup. And, you know, Julio's still doing Julio things and Cal still doing Cal things. And Naylor. You know, JP has been extremely good the entire month of September. Yeah. Yeah. The Jorge's doing what he does.
Starting point is 00:14:34 Like, yeah. Don Canzon's been great over the last week or so. Yep. So you have a bunch of guys getting hot at the right time. And it's just like, man, if you can get the lead off hitter going. And like most nights, Gino hits sixth in this lineup. Yeah. Like if your sixth hole hitter is like hot Gino Suarez.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Yeah. It's all it's not. Yeah. By the way, I don't know, man. I can't shake this feeling that like playoff Dom Kanzone is going to be a thing. See, now, every year there's like a, you know, like Rangers. Playoff answer name. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Yeah. Just like a rando who just goes off during a playoff stretch and all that. But like, I don't know if Kanzone is random enough. Like to the baseball world he is. To us, we know he's been pretty good for a while. Yeah, I mean, he's he's he's he's he's random in the sense that like, you know, there's Randy a Rosarena, Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor and Jorge Polanco and Neuhenio Soros is ahead of him, you know, right? But like I don't know. I just I feel like I mean, I feel like he could be that guy. He's pretty dialed right now. Yeah. Still has some of the ugliest swings you'll ever see. Yeah. Still runs the outfield like, you know, a newborn giraffe with knock knees. But, uh, yeah, it. It's. It's, he's hitting, man, he's hitting. And he's kind of secured a spot in the everyday lineup, whether it's in DH or in right field.
Starting point is 00:16:03 So, yeah, uh, yeah, it can't zone could be that guy. So we were wondering who's going to start the game for the mirrors. We assumed it was going to be Emerson Hancock. It wound up being Emerson Hancock, but we weren't sure for a while there. Uh, but Hancock winds up, uh, throwing four innings on this one. Strikes out seven just gives up two hits. again he's going up against the rocky is yada yada yada yada yada yada yada but the reason why hancock's outing last night is so notable is because we saw some real differences we saw him switch up
Starting point is 00:16:38 where he stood on the bump over the course of the night we saw the arm angle be significantly lowered he had averaged an arm angle of 19 degrees this season it was down to 11 degrees last night and as a result the sweeper just ate and it was mostly sinker sweeper last night from him Hancock. 46 of his 51 pitches were either a sinker or a sweeper. He had a 100% whiff rate on the sweeper last night. Six swings, six whiffs. He also got six called strikes on that pitch through 18 times. He was averaging 18 inches of horizontal break on his sweeper.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Only seven pitchers in the league are averaging 18 inches or more. and the sinker looked a lot like the sinker we saw in Boston earlier this year which to me was his best start the Velo was in a pretty good spot saw a lot of 95s even some 96 did go to 93 on a couple of them that's a concerning spot for Hancock specifically but overall I was thoroughly impressed with what we saw of in Mercer Hancock last night I saw the sweepers right I was able to go through and watch a good chunk of it and I'm going to go through again later today and watch the entire start, not just the strikeouts and, and, you know, all the out pitches. But yeah, it's definitely more sidearm. The sweeper was, not only was he getting whiffs on it, he was kind of, you know, front hipping it to the righties, and it was a legitimate weapon.
Starting point is 00:18:15 And, you know, it looked like to be a ton of sweepers away. And then he would pop the four seamer or the two seamer up from that arm slot. And that's a formula that works pretty well, especially at Team Mobile Park. We saw Paul Seawald, you know, dominate here for a couple of years with just 93 up in the zone and that slider sweeper low and away. But this sweeper was sweepier, if, you know, that's a word. Like it wasn't as firm as like, you know, as like Colin Snyder. It wasn't as firm as Snyder's slider. And it wasn't as firm as Paul Seawald slide.
Starting point is 00:18:55 it was much more loopier and the arm angle was lower than either of those guys. And it was weird to watch because, you know, it's not like anything we've seen for Emerson Hancock before. Hancock has never had this breaking ball. Never. And it was by far as best pitch yesterday. It's a literal weapon against right-handed hitters as well. Colorado is a very right-handed heavy lineup.
Starting point is 00:19:23 So that's a good matchup for Emerson anyways. but yeah, it reminded me quite a bit of Jeff Nelson back in the day. Now, Nelson was, you know, a premier setup man for 15 years, it seems like. So I don't want to go that far quite yet, but that's what reminded me of. You kind of had the delay kick and the pure sidearm, and it was just these frisbee sweepers away from the righties. And then just when you think you got that, he'd pop you up and in with a 95, 95, 96 mile an hour fastball to keep you honest. And yeah, it just had that vibe.
Starting point is 00:20:00 And so it'll be interesting to see. I imagine he won't pitch for the rest of the regular season, maybe the last game of the year. But he threw 50 pitches, I believe, which he hasn't done in quite a while. So probably not. I think he punched his ticket onto the playoff roster, though. And he could do some damage against some tough righties, you know, with that new sweeper.
Starting point is 00:20:22 So it does appear that Hancock has. embraced the role to be a pure reliever going forward, at least with the Mariners. And he's made physical changes to his delivery, to his, you know, arsenal to accommodate that. And last night was,
Starting point is 00:20:40 was a great, you know, a great outing for him. And it really is a, makes for an interesting, you know, dynamic coming out of the Mariners pin in the postseason. How much are they going to trust that?
Starting point is 00:20:51 You know, like, I don't know. But it was, was noticeable and it was quite interesting to see what Hancock looked like last night. All right. So the Dodgers are coming to town. Like we said, it's kind of meaningless.
Starting point is 00:21:06 I mean, there's still the first seed that's potentially up for grabs mathematically. Yeah. It's not very likely. But yeah, so it's mostly a meaningless series other than, you know, stats.
Starting point is 00:21:17 So we'll go over that in just a moment. But first a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Airs podcast is brought to you by Fandool. The NFL season is here. And you're listening to the Locked on Marrers podcast. So the Dodgers are coming to town for three. And Colby, remember when we were all worried about this series,
Starting point is 00:22:10 potentially? Good times. I always knew it was going to be a meaningless series. Right, right. I told you they're going to win like 18 in a row and everything's going to be fine. So I was wrong. They didn't win 18 in a row. Right, right, right.
Starting point is 00:22:23 Yeah, that's baseball, man. It really is a crazy sport. everything had to fall perfectly in order for the series to be meaningless for the Mariners and it did the Dodgers have also locked everything up
Starting point is 00:22:40 they won the West yesterday they clinched the third seed they can't go any higher so they're going to be playing in the wild card round imagine that losers but yeah I mean the Dodgers aren't playing for anything the Dodgers aren't
Starting point is 00:22:57 aren't playing for anything. You're not really playing for anything again. Like the number one seat is still mathematically possible, but it's such a long shot. There's just not that big of a difference either between being the one and the two. It's potentially one more playoff, home playoff game.
Starting point is 00:23:14 It's ultimately dependent on if the Yankees or the Blue Jays, whoever wins the East, wins the divisional round, and you see them in the ALCS, which means that you also have to win the ALCS, which let's let's cross that bridge when we get to it but uh sure but yeah like yeah so i don't know we'll see plus the blue jays are playing the uh the rays for their final series
Starting point is 00:23:38 i think you would need them to lose twice and you would have to sweep the daughters right so yeah i don't know yeah so uh yeah and then i don't i don't know who the yankees are playing i think they're playing the ori'll i think it's the oriels yeah yeah so Because Boston plays Detroit. Yeah, I just, I don't think that's happening. That's not going to happen. George Kirby and Logan Gilbert getting one final tune-up each before the playoffs. One of those guys might actually wind up starting game one of the ALDS.
Starting point is 00:24:11 I don't know if he saw the article that Daniel Kramer wrote yesterday, but Brian Wu is now kind of like on an five-day throwing plan, and that would line him up to pitch in game two of the ALDS. So it's possible it could be Kirby or Yelbert. Maybe it's Cassio in game one. especially at home. Yeah. I mean, yeah, depending on who the opponent, we know it's going to be one of three opponents. We just don't know which one.
Starting point is 00:24:33 It's going to be Cleveland, Detroit, or Houston. Yeah. There is no receding. You play the winner of the three-six matchup no matter what. So, yeah, we'll see who that ends up being. Right now, it would be either Detroit or Cleveland. But, you know, Houston, I believe their tragic number is two. Yeah, they're two back of the Tigers right now because of the tiebreaker.
Starting point is 00:25:00 Because the Tigers have the tiebreaker, right? Yeah. So, I mean, we'll see what happens there. I don't know. But I also don't know for sure. They made it official that Gilbert's starting. I assumed he was. But as of last night, it was Kirby and then it was TBA, TBA for the last two games.
Starting point is 00:25:15 But I- Right now, yeah, right now, I'm looking at roster resource on fan graphs, which doesn't account for any sort of like TBA, TBD. But yeah, right now it's Kirby, Gilbert, Millie. for the final three games against Sheehan, Glassdowne and Kirshaw. I don't know if Glastown is going to make that start. We know that Kerchow is going to make that start because that's his final regular season start and Sheehan is whatever. But we'll see how it goes.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Yeah, my assumption here is that the next three games are going to go pretty much how the last game went where it's going to be a fairly normal lineup. And then we start to see guys get pulled over the course of the game, you know, just to give guys some reps, but also kind of, you know, put them in. in bubble wrap as well. I assume that Cal is not going to catch anymore for the rest of the season. I'd be pretty surprised if that happens.
Starting point is 00:26:06 Maybe you could finally give Harry Ford a start. That would be great. Best time to use Harry Ford for his first major league start is against Tyler Glass now. Sure. Not whatever the Scrant Hank Blaylock they threw last night. Sorry, that's disrespectful to Hank Blaylock. He's actually a good player.
Starting point is 00:26:22 Yeah, yeah. Image Sheehan is going to, going tonight, this would be a great opportunity to put Harry Ford in the lineup. Sure. I mean, let him get his first big league hit against, you know, Clayton Kershaw on Sunday. Sure, sure. Yeah, so, you know, Cal's still going to be Chase Amaris and Judge. They're going to give him all the opportunities to do that. Gino is one home run away now from hitting 50. And obviously him and Cal would be the second pair of teammates to ever hit 50 plus bomb. in the same regular season.
Starting point is 00:26:58 Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle were the other two to do that. So there you go. Does it count, though, because Gino didn't hit 50 with the Mariners? Yes and no. I don't know. I feel a little bit conflicted on that. Whatever. Because it's like if Gino played 81 of his games in Seattle, would he be at 49 home runs?
Starting point is 00:27:20 I don't think so. Probably not. Yeah, but whatever. Whatever. It's still, it's a cool milestone for Gino and Cal to potentially get to. And, uh, yeah, I mean, Josh Naylor is one stolen base away from getting to 30, which is insane. Uh, he has more stolen bases than, uh, Julio and Randy now, by the way. Sure. Naturally. That's why he went out and you got that guy. Yeah. Yeah. Um, yeah. Um, yeah, it doesn't seem like Randy is going to get to, uh, 30, 30, unfortunately. Um, and I'm not sure that that, that, that will be able to,
Starting point is 00:27:58 was going to get there either. Actually, him and him and Randy have the same amount of stolen bases now. Randy, Randy got 29 last night. I forgot about that. But yeah, I can't imagine that they're going to be like, yeah, Julio, with three games to go. Steele second. I think Randy won't care. And like he'll just take second at some point in the series and he'll get his 30 bags.
Starting point is 00:28:27 I don't know if he's going to hit the 30 home runs, unfortunately. Maybe you never know. Randy can get hot at any moment, just like Gino. And what is Julio needs, what? Three steals. Two stolen bases. Two. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:28:40 Yeah, I just, I don't know. Like, you want to get there, but also like the last thing you want is Julio to like jam his wrist sliding in the second. And I mean, uh, correct me if I'm wrong. I'm pretty sure when Sam Haggurdy got hurt in the final series of the year, it was on a stolen base at Tom. Yeah, it might have been a pass ball, like a tent, but yeah, he was trying to get to second. And yeah, he slid weird and all that.
Starting point is 00:29:05 So yeah, so you just want to like, you still want to let guys be themselves, but also, you know, like, we got bigger fish to fry here. You don't want to be so cautious that, like, you don't allow your body to do what it's been doing because that could also, like, cause problems. Yeah. So, yeah, but I think they'll probably dial it. Plus, you know, we don't know how many have bats who wheels. was going to get over the next three games and might not get on first base twice my guess is four to six yeah um you know it's interesting to see Julio is one of the guys they took out last night do they change it up like tonight or is geno going to be one of the first guys they take out of the
Starting point is 00:29:44 game is is uh you know Nailer going to be one of the first guys they take out of the game because he was one of the last guys they took out of last night it's Randy get removed from this game tonight because he played the all nine innings yesterday blah blah so Again, we're just kind of trying to figure out how they're going to handle this. But yeah, any other individual milestones? Like, nothing for Cal to do. There might be some that I'm not aware of, you know, for maybe like, you know, I don't know if like JPs on the verge of anything.
Starting point is 00:30:17 I don't know if Polo's on the verge of anything. Yeah, like I know about, you know, Nailor's stolen bases, Gino's Homer is obviously Cal. uh, Julio. Oh yeah, Julio's, uh, five RBI away from,
Starting point is 00:30:32 uh, 100 RBI season. Uh, that would be his second 30 Homer 100 RBI season in his career. He's going to do it all tonight. That'd be great. That'd be awesome. 5 RBI,
Starting point is 00:30:44 two stolen bases, leaping catch at the wall again. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. So it's going to be great. Tonight is Julio's night. That's going to do it for a show.
