So get excited people.
Starting point is 00:01:23 But first, let's get started with a question from Max who wants to know two-parter, should the Mariners trade for J.D. Davis? and also if the mayor is due trade for J.D. Davis, who's the guy he's replacing and what would it realistically cost to acquire him? Colby? I don't know. Like, I think for a lot of people, J.D. Davis is a no-brainer. And I certainly understand why. Like, even I'm interested to some degree in J.D. Davis.
Starting point is 00:01:48 But I think the first question you have to ask yourself is, like, is J.D. Davis better than Josh Rojas, who right now is the projected opening day at their basement? maybe, maybe not. It's definitely not a guarantee. You shouldn't feel great about that. Then the next question is, you know, how healthy is Luis Urias? Can he be ready by opening day? And if he's not, how much longer is he going to need? Is he going to be back before the end of April?
Starting point is 00:02:15 And if he is, and you don't think that J.D. Davis is a drastic improvement over him, why would you give up the prospect capital when Rojas and Moore can handle that position fine for, you know, two or three weeks? And in addition to the prospect capital, you have to give up, he's going to make $6.9 million this year. We think that's about all, yeah, we think that's about all Jerry has for the entire year, the rest of this year. Is J.D. Davis the guy that you want to go and blow the rest of your budget on,
Starting point is 00:02:45 which the answer may seem like yes now, but when you get into July and you go to John Stanton, you say we need $3 million more so I can trade for this guy, and he says no, well, now you have to trade somebody off your Major League roster to clear that space. that creates another headache and that probably creates another hole. Then I have to try and go patch. So this is a pretty complicated situation.
Starting point is 00:03:07 You wish it wasn't. You wish that they just had the money and like, yeah, sure, fine, whatever. And then if Eureas is fine too, then we'll just find out bats for them. And Davis, you know, they can coexist. But the Mariners have some answers at third base that are very conceivably as good as J.D. Davis. And they're cheaper than J.D. Davis. and the mayors don't have, let me rephrase that, Jerry and Justin don't have extra money
Starting point is 00:03:31 to just throw around on minor upgrades. Like they have to get some bang for the buck. I don't think the Giants are going to eat any of that money. I think they're probably going to have another suitor for a guy like J.D. Davis, maybe the Cubs, somebody like that. Maybe the Blue Jays, somebody who missed out on the third base market. So I think when I kind of sit down and I look at J.D. Davis, I look at the player and I say,
Starting point is 00:03:53 is he an upgrade over Rojas, more urea's i don't know if he's an upgrade over any of them he might be an upgrade over all of them but i wouldn't bet on it and do i want to use 6.9 million dollars to make that bet and prevent me from going out this summer and adding you know maybe a high leverage reliever or you know a better third basement or maybe you need an outfield or maybe you need a starting pitcher and having that five six million bucks in your back pocket can really help there so things that you think are set in stone right now might not be And a couple months time.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Right. This is a team that's got some injuries, injury guys on it. So, you know, maybe Hanager gets hurt or maybe Garber gets hurt and you have to go out and you have to replace some of these guys. So to me, when I boil it all down, am I upset of the Mariners going? They trade for JD Davis? No. I don't think I'm upset. It's not something I would do because to me, I look at Rojas, I look at Ereis.
Starting point is 00:04:50 I look at Dylan Moore even. And I feel like between those three guys, I can get something that's pretty clear. to J.D. Davis. Now, if you're going to tell me J.D. Davis is going to go and he's going to hit like he did a few years ago where he was a 125 WRC plus bat and he's going to play the high quality defense he did last year for the first time in his entire career. Okay, that's probably a three and a half four win, you know, third baseman. Yes, I'm interested. That's a really good player. Yeah. But if you're only getting the league average bat and the above average glove, that's, that's kind of what you had in Gino last year. And it's going to cost the rest of your
Starting point is 00:05:25 money. If you get the opposite of that, well, then now you have a bad defensive third baseman. You have Thai France, but he's playing third. Like, that's a problem. So to me, like Davis, no, I'm not, I'm not that interested in JD Davis, unless, you know, Urius's injury is much worse than we thought. Like I said, I think, you know, you kind of trust the Mariners on this one a little bit, but to me, no, I don't think that's the best use of, you know, the remaining budget that Jerry and Justin unfortunately have to work with. So I would say no. It's a very similar conversation to the Chapman one, obviously on a much lower level. But again, we're talking about is this player worth potentially sacrificing the rest of your flexibility for? And I'm right there with you. Now,
Starting point is 00:06:10 I've put the idea of Davis out there a couple of times now because I think he's someone that the mayors would like. And obviously a lot of upside in the bat. Like you mentioned, you know, he's been a 125, 130 WRC plus guy a couple of times, you know, fairly recently. And if he's actually figured some things out defensively, he may very well be your best defensive third basement
Starting point is 00:06:32 if you were able to bring him in. I think some of this is dependent on, like you mentioned, if the ureus injury is a lot worse than we're being led to believe. And or two, the Mariners have now seen him come into camp. Ryan Davis has reported that he's come in a little bit out of shape. We know the mayors don't like that.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Guys that don't, like, if they think that Eureus is not putting in the work right now to put himself in the best position to succeed, maybe they just wash their hands of him. I don't think that's likely. Like, don't get me wrong there, but he doesn't have to make the roster. He has a minor league option. I know he's making $5 million and that's a lot to the mayors right now. So maybe they force the issue nevertheless But he hasn't banked any goodwill here
Starting point is 00:07:26 So if they're disappointed in him and they don't think that he's kind of living up to the standard that they want to set They don't have to roster him and maybe at that point they feel the third base situation is is dire enough to go trade for someone like J.D Davis I don't think so though I think even if the third base situation is some platoon of Dillamore and Josh Rojas I think you're fine because we know that Dillamore can play solid defense, even at third base, and he can hit lefties. We know that about Dillamore. He's a flawed player, but he can do those things very well.
Starting point is 00:08:03 And Rojas, they've made a legitimate tweak with his swing. He's starting to pull the ball more, and he's starting to lift the ball more to his pull side. We saw him go yard against the Rockies the other day, doing just that. I think the Bears have a two-win player, at least. I guess what I would say is this, like, J.D. Davis is, like, the concern here is that J.D. Davis struggles at the plate and he reverts defensively. And so he's just not a valuable player. And then you're blowing $7 million on a guy and you have another A.J. Pollock on your hands where you're just like, like, what do we do with this guy? We don't know. Get him like, he's not hitting lefties even. He's not playing, he's not playing good defense. Like, and that's it. That's all I have. Now I have to try and find somebody to take Davis or Rojas. or Eureus or maybe even Thai France.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Like I have to clear some space to go out and replace this player. So I just think there's too many question marks here. But again, if they decided to do it, I'm fine with it. I just I don't think he's a good fit on the roster the way it's currently constructed. Now if Eureas has to have like some kind of shoulder surgery and he's out for like the year, that's something like that happens, fine. But I don't think that's where we're headed. And I just don't see a natural fit here.
Starting point is 00:09:22 for J.D. Davis, unless, again, the Mariners really think they can get him to 120 WRC plus J.D. Davis and keep the good defense, even just average defense at their base. Fine. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on that. But for me personally, it's just too much risk that I would feel comfortable taking. All right. We'll be answering more of your questions and announcing the winner of Colby's stuff in just a moment. Starting point is 00:10:54 for the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team, every day. So before we get back into your questions here on Mailbag Monday, we have an announcement to make the winner of Colby's stuff, Colby's mystery prize pack, which really isn't a mystery. He showed you guys what the prizes are. But the winner of our giveaway is at Joshua Press 2808 on YouTube. Congratulations, Joshua. We will let you know here in just a moment how you can claim your prize.
Starting point is 00:11:27 But before we do that, Colby, a reminder of what Josh is winning. Sure, quite a bit actually, including maybe a few surprises. You're getting a Mitch Garter. This is what you're definitely getting Mitch Garver autograph card. Randy Winn autograph card. Kyle Seeger autograph card. Kyle Seeger Bobblehead. Nice.
Starting point is 00:11:49 You're winning a Las Montes number, Bowman Chrome. You're winning a Perlonder Borowa, beautiful Perlonda Baroa card. Five out of five, only five of these cards in the world. You're getting one of them. And there may be a couple more surprises thrown in there. So the severe, like the. So there is some mystery then. There is a little bit of mystery, I think.
Starting point is 00:12:14 Let's just say we've had a card benefactor. And I kind of want to share the love a little bit. So there might be one or two more surprises in that box, but you're getting, I think, what do we have, four or five autos, a couple of Bowman Chrome. You're getting a Harry Ford, Bowman Chrome as well. It's a cool prize box. You're also getting the Kyle Seeger bobblehead in a box that I have never opened.
Starting point is 00:12:35 Right. So I don't know. I don't know they did autographs, you know, secret autograph bobbleheads when they gave up that Kyle Seeger, but I never opened it. So if they did, that bobblehead could be autographed for all I know. So, yeah, congratulations. congratulations on your prize, but yeah, that's what you're getting. And then maybe one or two extra surprises.
Starting point is 00:12:54 We'll see. So how can Joshua claim his prize? Yeah, Joshua, all you got to do, the only thing you can do right now is you just email us, uh, locked on mariners at gmail.com. Just send us an email. Uh, there's something else you'll have to do to confirm your identity, but we'll talk about that when you send us email. So email us at locked on mariners at gmail.com.
Starting point is 00:13:14 We'll get back to you as soon as we can. You have until Friday to claim your prize, um, at which point. maybe I just keep all my stuff or maybe we pick another winner. It kind of depends on my mood. So you have to tell Friday. Lockdown Mariners at e-mail.com. Well, congratulations, Josh. And thank you to all who entered.
Starting point is 00:13:32 Let's get back into these questions here. This one comes from Ryan. If Emerson Hancock really shows out this spring, is there any chance he bumps Brian Wu out of the rotation? Look, Hancock's fastball velo being up to 95, 96, 97, according to service that touch 97 a couple times in Saturday's game. Cool. Certainly helps.
Starting point is 00:13:54 It's better than 91, 92. No question about that. Certainly helps. It's still a relatively flat pitch. It's not a high spin pitch. As far as we know, can't see it. So how do we know?
Starting point is 00:14:07 It's hard to give an opinion on this when we haven't seen it for ourselves. And we're just going off of tweets and the word of Scott's service, who's obviously going to hype up his guy. Of course he is, as he should. It's his job. Yeah. So the fastball velo certainly helps. Obviously it does.
Starting point is 00:14:22 It's a lot harder to hit 97 than it is hit 90. You know, it's harder to hit 95 than it is to hit 93. A, a couple questions with that. A, is he just letting it rip because he knows it's a two-inning outing and he's trying to make the team? Can he carry that Velo or anywhere close to that for four, five, six, seven innings? Can he go four, five, six, seven innings? How's the breaking ball look? The other thing, too, on the Velo?
Starting point is 00:14:47 We had some eyes and ears down at the ballpark yesterday to see that start. And I had heard that his Velo did go down in the second inning to more like 93. So again, is he able to carry that high Velo for multiple innings? Or by the time he gets the third or the fourth, it is 91, 92, 93 again. Right. At which point his margin of error goes to zero. Because at 95, 96, 97, the changeup plays up even more. And the changeup is his best pitch by far.
Starting point is 00:15:23 And yesterday he got to throw it quite a bit because the fastball velo was there. It's not a change up like Felix Hernandez change up where it's like, oh, well, they're both 91 miles an hour, but it's so filthy that it doesn't matter. No, Hancock needs that velocity, discrepancy to really make that change up play out. And it's a good pitch. It's a legit pitch. The only thing that I'm more optimistic on this year about Hancock than I will. was, you know, a month ago is that maybe he can help you out of the bullpen. Because if you can throw a 97 for one inning and he has that change up.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Yeah. Okay. Okay. Now I might be able to trust them, you know, in these mid leverage, mid mid leverage, you know, situations. But until I see it, and by the way, not going to get to see his next start either. Surprise. No games on route for the next 11 days. Interesting. Too bad they don't own that network.
Starting point is 00:16:12 We're not going to get to see it. Maybe until the very end of spring, if we even get to see it at all. If the Mariners grace us with their bonus coverage, maybe we get to see another, our first Emerson Hancock start. Colby's turned. Colby's turned the Emerson Hancock question into a Mariner's TV rant. Don't you dare act like you're doing me a favor with your bonus coverage of a game that's happening in Peoria.
Starting point is 00:16:37 You don't even have to travel to film this game, whatever. You didn't enjoy listening to Dan Arcello? Happy thoughts. No, no, I didn't. because apparently T-Mobile Park skews a little bit towards pitchers. Way to do your research, guys. A little bit. A little bit.
Starting point is 00:16:51 Great job. Great job. And I can't even be mad at them because that's not their job. They're there to cover the Padres. Anyways. So, no, I don't see any scenario where Hancock bumps, unless injury, of course. I think there's a small shot. They could go six-man rotation early, but I don't see it.
Starting point is 00:17:11 I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong. if they feel like Hancock's earned a spot on the team, I don't know there's anything wrong with sticking him in the bullpen. Because I don't see much of a starter's future here. I really don't. Now, again, maybe I get to see the breaking ball at some point and it's good. And it's, oh, he's a three-pitch guy. And he's throwing 94.
Starting point is 00:17:29 You know, that's different. But until I see it with my own eyes, until I see Major League hitters react to it, until I see Hancock perform, I kind of can't change my opinion that much. Like, it's tough to do a one. on a guy or any kind of turn when you haven't witnessed it. So I'm relying a lot on secondhand for information here.
Starting point is 00:17:50 I'm relying on what I saw last year. And the idea that you're going to trust a guy with multiple shoulder injuries to kind of go out there and outperform Brian Wu, who was very good last year for a rookie. Yeah. It feels very. I guess I don't really look at it as like can he outperform Brian Wu? I guess it's more can he get to a point where they feel comfortable enough? where if they're not super in on starting Wu at the major league level this year, and they would like to manage his innings down in the minors,
Starting point is 00:18:23 can Hancock get to a point by the end of this month where they feel comfortable enough to roll with him to start the year? I just, you have to manage Hancock's innings too. Right. Well, I mean, that's just the position they've, that's just the position they put themselves in here, whether it's, whether it's Hancock, whoever, because they just, they don't have,
Starting point is 00:18:42 really any depth behind their their starting five. Like I think like if you want to get like galaxy brain idea here, like you could move Wu to the bullpen until Brash is back and have Wu face mostly right handed hitters, which you know he dominates and you can have Hancock, you know, pitch and maybe there's a piggyback situation there, maybe not.
Starting point is 00:19:02 I just don't see a way that Hancock gets there because to me like the change up great, the fastball velo, cool. Can you carry the fastball velo? We're going to see. I think he's next out and he'll probably throw 50, 55, pitches, something like that. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:19:14 The outing after that, it'll probably be, you know, 65, 70. He'll probably go four or five innings. So that'll be the real test here. But I'm not, I'm not hopping aboard the Emerson Hancock hype train. Um, I would love to be wrong. I would love to see Hancock have like a 55 slider. Well, like we talked about this would legitimately change things. If he's good, you know, or just average.
Starting point is 00:19:35 At worst, you have a really good reliever now that you can add to your pen as you wait for Matt Prash to work his way back. But at best, you have actual starting pitching. depth. You have an actual trade chip from your rotation now. Like that's available to you. So yeah. Hancock's development would be key. And again, it's, it's, it's good. It's certainly not bad news that he's throwing 95, 96, even in short outings. Right. Fine. It's just let's pump the brakes on. Can you break camp with the team, all that? Is it college Emerson Hancock? Based on what? No. I would say no. So is it, you know, maybe beginning of last year, Hancock when he was healthy? Okay. Yeah. And that, that guy was, you know,
Starting point is 00:20:11 a number four number five starter, which is fine. Just not what Brian Wu is. My other thing to you on the whole, you know, maybe start Wu out in the bullpen, it's like, yeah, you're limiting his innings, but do you really want him throwing high stress endings? And on the flip side, are you going to be able to carry, to guarantee him non-high stress innings out of the bullpen with relative consistent basis?
Starting point is 00:20:36 Plus, then you've got to stretch him out again if you want to use him in the, exactly, yeah, in the rotation. So my answer is still no. I don't really see any path forward. I would love to see him pitch. We'll see if we're allowed if we're given the privilege of seeing Emerson Hancock pitch. It would be nice.

Starting point is 00:21:50 Monday we got a couple more questions from you guys this one from on the diamond and then it cuts off so I don't know what the rest of your name is sorry who has most and least impressed you so far this spring I've been very impressed with how little the mayors want their fans to watch their ball club this spring keep on putting up those roadblocks and then cry like, oh, we don't have money as you continue to shut off revenue streams. Oh, yeah. I wonder what's happening.
Starting point is 00:22:22 Why aren't people more interested in the Mariners? Because they can't find you. Anyways. We're very concerned that people won't upgrade their subscription to the premium package or whatever. Gee, if only there was a way that we could make them more interested in doing that. Man, but what I don't have a billion dollars. So what do I know?
Starting point is 00:22:42 Yeah. I'm just a simple fan who, you know. you know, occasionally gets the privilege of some bonus coverage on a Sunday afternoon. What do I know? Anyways, don't make me your idea, John.
Starting point is 00:22:53 The live stream is we're roaring success. We're not going to do them anymore until next year. Why are you so bad at this? Anyways. Yeah, anyway. That's not the spirit of the question. Yes,
Starting point is 00:23:07 I know, I know. We can make it whatever we want, though. This is our show. It's our show. It's our domain. Least impressive.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Boy, the last few days, it's been that the guys, like, buying for the last two spots in the bullpen. Yeah, the back of the bullpen contenders. Oh, Thornton, Vargas, Snyder, Javera, Javera, they've all gotten smoked the last two days. So, yeah, that's not great. And not against, like, great hitters either. Like, Snyder, at least face some big leaguers. And so did Vargas, but, like. Yeah, who did Camp Osano go yard off of?
Starting point is 00:23:43 Was that Snyder? Or was that Campesano? uh, Snyder, I think. So like, yeah, not a great look for them. I mean, I guess the good news there is that buttries looked pretty good. Cravels look pretty good. Like, you have some options there, but obviously those guys have not been that impressive. Um, you know, it's hard.
Starting point is 00:24:04 I'm, I'm disappointed that we haven't seen the starters more. Like, I think Cal Raleigh's got like four plate appearances. And it's like, we're 10 days in. Like, I get the, he has to. It would be great to watch one of the best players in baseball in Julio Rodriguez, but alas. You know, we just couldn't turn on that camera from center field and stream it on YouTube. Even though we were literally recording the game and there's footage out there of the game with a scorebook. Whatever, whatever.
Starting point is 00:24:31 Okay. Anyway, anyway, anyway, anyway. I know, I know. I don't want to make the whole show about this, though. To me, the most disappointing thing is kind of how the Mariners have, like, rolled out their units, right? they're like actual 26 man rock we haven't seen like a regular starting lineup anything close to like hey this is what an opening day lineup could look like we haven't seen the starting outfield and starting infield playing the same game we haven't seen the full starting infield in like
Starting point is 00:24:56 three or four games um or the full starting outfield we i don't think luke raley has an inning in the outfield yet i think he's played exclusively first base maybe that first game you played a couple i'll have to double check that but yeah but he's played more first base than he has you know in the outfield which maybe that's just because you know i i i get it's they have guys who are they have a few older guys who are susceptible to injuries they're trying to space out their play time totally get it you got to be careful there because like you don't want to get into the last week of spring training and these guys have 20 plate appearances and it's like okay and now we're going to ramp them up like the regular season for us starts on yeah they've also they've actually acknowledged the slow starts in april this off season i wonder if that's tied to that at all I just like, like, okay, well, they're well rested. That's cool. But like, you got to see live arms.
Starting point is 00:25:48 Like you got to see live pitching and not just like on the backfields. Like you got to see it in a game situation. I do kind of wonder if it's like they're going to give them a full week or so at the end of the season or at the end of spring training where everyone's playing. Yeah, that seems like a riskier plan than just spreading it out. But, you know, whatever. Like we'll see how that works. So that's been a little disappointing. Not that we've been able to see most of those lineups anyways.
Starting point is 00:26:13 whatever. Most encouraging or most impressive, I think what's the wording of the question? Yeah, most impressive. Cade Marlowe's up there. Yeah, Kaye Marlowe's had a really good spring. Brian Bliss has had a really good spring too. Had a single today against you, Darbish. We're recording this on Sunday, by the way.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Cole Young, yeah, we have to mention Cole Young. You know, now I'm not getting like crazy about this. the opening day roster stop it. That question is ridiculous. He's not like I'm not on the whole like yeah, you got to put Cole Young on the opening day roster thing. But what I've seen so far out of him big, but come on. What I've seen what I've seen out of him so far though has been impressive.
Starting point is 00:26:56 And it does make me feel a little bit better about him possibly coming up at some point this season. Then, you know, I did a couple weeks ago. Sure. So. Harry Ford defensively certainly has stood out. Oh yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:10 Yeah. Yeah. He's had a good spring defensively. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's looked fine overall behind the plate, you know, aside from the cut stealing. I think, you know, for me, it's Cade Marlowe.
Starting point is 00:27:23 He's got a couple extra base hits, had the home run today. Yesterday, he pulled off a really good drag bunt. So you can kind of see like the speed, the power, like, you know, a little more upper cut to a swing than last year. I'm not sure how that's going to translate. Not a huge fan of that for Marlowe's game in particular, but maybe he gets to more power. Who knows? He went yard off the Darvish today. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:27:43 Like, Cade Marlowe's basically become who we were hoping Jared Kellnick would be last year. Like, he's just kind of a league average bat who can kind of play some center, but mostly in the corners. Like he's got some pop. He can steal some bags. Like,
Starting point is 00:27:56 he's poor man, Jared Kelnick. So I think, you know, Marlowe's definitely out there. Cole Young is probably the star of camp early. Certainly, generating a lot of buzz.
Starting point is 00:28:08 Rojas has looked pretty good. it does seem like the Mariners have unlocked some kind of power. Tyler Locklear's looked pretty good. Yeah. Solid double today against a legit big league reliever. Yeah. Stephen Wilson. I mean,
Starting point is 00:28:20 Farmello also had a triple off of a legit big league reliever and Cole Young had a single off of a legit big league. So like the kids are the kids look fine. Bliss looks good. You know, Ford's been good. Locklear's been solid. Young's been really good. Like they've all flashed at times. So, yeah, there's a lot of positives in spring, uh,
Starting point is 00:28:38 despite the, the, the terrible record and you know when holding laws enters the game it's game over and not the good way um but you know that overall it's been a good camp like we've gotten to see a lot of young guys see is anyways enough of those yeah yeah yeah um but yeah i think c'd marlow probably i think marlowe has helped his his case to make the opening day roster more than anybody is how i would word it um but marlowe's been impressive bliss i liked what i saw after the first game bliss really struggled and it just kind of seems like he's just settled in and, you know, made a couple
Starting point is 00:29:13 nice plays that shortstop today too. I can do that. So, yeah, Marlow Bliss, young, I think would probably be up there. So that's going to do it for our show.
