Starting point is 00:00:52 Visit patreon.com. Forward slash Control Zone for more information. On today's episode of Lockdown Mariners, Jerry DePoto and the Mariners still haven't done anything. So we're doing everyone's favorite fan fiction Friday. You provided your Mariners trade ideas. We're going to read them out on here and grade them on the 2080 scale. 80 being the best, 20 being the not so good. And honestly, we haven't given anything over a 60 in the few weeks we've been doing this. But hey, there's always a first for everything. And,
Starting point is 00:01:19 you know, honestly, we probably wouldn't even be able to create a trade that's over a 60 or a 65. It's just really hard to come up with. So if you like what you hear, give the show a follow. or subscribe wherever you listen to this. We'd greatly appreciate it. We're going to start with a couple trades here that we got in a via email, starting with one from Justin, who has a pretty big deal here with the nationals in which the Mariners take on the salary of Patrick Corbyn and also get Victor Robles and Trey Barrera or Riley Adams. And then the nationals get Connor Phillips 110 and Jake Fraley. So it's a lot to take on here. Colby, what are your initial thoughts?
Starting point is 00:02:06 Seems like a lot to give up for Patrick Corby, who was pretty bad last year and is also due a tremendous amount of money. Victor Robles is one of those guys who's an interesting player and he's a fun player, but I think he only has a year left to club control and he just has not figured out a hit with any consistency. not exactly the type of guy that I would want to bank on as my center fielder. So I think the Mariners are giving up too much, and it's not like they're giving up a tremendous amount here. I just think Patrick Corbyn was really bad in 2020, and he was really, really bad in 2021. So it's just to just take on, what, 24,
Starting point is 00:02:57 million dollars a year over the next three years. It just seems like an unnecessary risk. Yeah, it's one that could easily blow up in their face. It's just a lot of payroll commitment for a guy that even at his best is probably a number three. So I just, I'm not a huge fan of that, really. I just like, even with Robles and I like Robles, by the way, like his glove. I think there's, there's more that can be tapped into him offensively.
Starting point is 00:03:25 Obviously, he hasn't got in. He hasn't gotten there yet, but, and I like, you know, having a choice of Barrera or Adams as well. But it's just, it's really like, it's not even the trade compensation that you're given away that bothers me. It's just taking on that money and how that could limit me from doing other things than the future for a guy that, again, like I said, at best is probably a number three. and just do $83 million over the next year's I mean like Kevin Gossman isn't even expected to make that kind of AV no yeah just go sign him and I get to keep Phillips so
Starting point is 00:04:10 yeah just like I said even if this was 2019 Patrick Corby I'm still I mean probably I do it but it's just so much money to give away to a guy who's coming off of a well let's call it a mediocre year in 2020 and in 2021 he led the National League in earned runs and home runs
Starting point is 00:04:39 allowed so ran a one point negative 1.1b war it's just it's too big of a risk to take on yeah and the prize can't be Victor Roe that's just that's not a prize I mean I like him too but no yeah all right so what are you given Justin's uh Justin's deal like a 35 like the creativity Corbin's the new name Robles is a guy that I like and I kudos to having Freely end up in Washington DC but
Starting point is 00:05:11 it's it's it's just it's way too much money to way too big of a risk for Seattle to take on yeah I'm probably thinking 35 to 40 here. I'll go with 40 just to be nice. So it looks here that we actually only had one email submission. So we have, so we're going to go over here to Twitter instead and look at a trade idea from Blaine Steele at Seattle M's News on Twitter. We have the Mariners making a trade with the Reds in which the Mariners sent Taylor Trem's while at mills and justice sheffield to the reds for sunny gray and tyler naquin um initial thought to this is just that's not enough from the mariners way too light yeah yeah um like the reds
Starting point is 00:06:06 want to move some salary sure and gray is making i think 10 million dollars this year um but right now taylor tremel not a lot of value there some but not a lot sheffield has almost none like probably negative value if you're being honest and so um yeah who who was the third piece again mills mills yeah mills also doesn't carry much value he's a reliever so that you're basically asking them to give you a number four outfielder and a number three starting pitcher for free it just it's it's it's not enough yeah so i uh i'm gonna give this one like 30 sorry i'll give it 35 You just, you need more for this trade to make sense. Or you need to take on, you know, Shogo Akiyama.
Starting point is 00:06:59 And even then you probably still need a little bit more. All right. So we actually did have another trade proposal in our email. I just found out that's what I was trying to look into from Aiden. And I guess we had missed this from a couple weeks ago. Sorry about that, Aden. But he sent in a reminder for us to read it on. mayor. So in this trade, the,
Starting point is 00:07:24 the Mariners send Emerson Hancock, Cal Raleigh, and Logan Reinhardt to the brewers for Luis Ureus, the middle infielder for the Brewers, and Abner Eribe, the right-handed pitching prospect from the brewers. What do you think about this, Steele, Colby? I don't know why the brewers would do it. Because the brewers, like the mariners, are trying to compete, right? And Eureas was.
Starting point is 00:07:52 a pretty big part of their, their division winning team. So, like, would they, is that enough to at least get them to consider it? Probably. I mean, Raleigh and Hancock are really nice pieces. But they're in the same place you are. I mean, you're not,
Starting point is 00:08:11 you're not in a position where you would trade Mitch Hanigur for, you know, a fringy top 100 prospect and a, you know, top 250 prospect with some major league seasoning like that doesn't make sense for you especially in the top 100 prospect like hancock probably isn't going to pitch in the big leagues for you this year so um i just it's why would why would the brewers do that um if they were rebuilding i could see it but they're not they're they're going to try and win next year so uh i just don't think the the situation matches
Starting point is 00:08:45 the the offer yeah and your race is a guy that's uh starting to figure it out a little bit here um So I just, I don't know why the, the brewers would go off that when there's really no need to trade him. This more feels like a deal that's predicated on what the Mariners need than anything that the brewers need. Just doesn't really take into into account what, you know, what or where the, the brewers are. So, yeah, it's creative. I'll give you that, Aidan. So I'm going to give it probably a 42, because I think it's a little bit better than a 40. I think it's a 40.
Starting point is 00:09:35 All right. So we have more trades coming on the way in just a moment. But real quick, I want to remind you this episode of Lockdown Mariners is brought to you by Biltbar, who has a ton of Black Friday deals going on right now. It's the most wonderful time of the year. Starting point is 00:11:47 Greatly appreciate the support. Hope you guys are having a great holiday weekend. Let's continue with the trade. talk here, starting with Brian on Twitter at Northwest 79 underscore BPI, who has the Mariners sending Justin Dunn and Justice Sheffield to the A's for Matt Chapman. Not enough. Nope. We really need to stop with the Justice Sheffield trades.
Starting point is 00:12:14 We say this, I feel probably once every show, Justice Sheffield does not have really any trade value in terms of, I mean, I mean, like, could you trade Justice Sheffield for something? Possibly, probably, but probably cash or, you know, a Jake Shiner type of prospect. He's not going to help you get a Matt Chapman. He's not going to help you get any of these guys that is going to help you in 2020. He just doesn't have that, that kind of pull right now. No. I mean, Dunn doesn't have much more.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Yeah. So, I mean, Sheffield actually has a longer track record of being successful. than even done. So, you know, it just, it's, those two guys aren't worth much. They're lottery tickets that you can tack on at the end of the deal or you can trade them for other lottery tickets. You're not trading them or an established big leaguer. So, um, yeah, it's, it's just as much as we don't like Chapman, we don't love Chapman that much, uh, you got to give something to get something. And Chapman is certainly something. So, yeah. I'm, Sorry, I know we're being kind of Debbie Downers on this episode with the scores here, but I honestly, this trade might be a 25.
Starting point is 00:13:34 I'll give it like a 30, 35. And you can blame Jerry to Poto for us being Debbie Downers. Like anything, Jerry, a minor league signing would be enough. Yes, I will take anything that will improve my mood significantly. Yes. a green. So, yeah, I'll give it like a 30. You just Sheffield and Dunn guys, they don't have much.
Starting point is 00:14:00 I mean, we traded Dunn in our offseason plan for, you know, basically a done equivalent except a hitter, right? So that's what you're looking for. You're not trading them for an established big leaguer, either of them or both of them. Yeah, both of them are not going to get you anywhere close to someone like Matt Chapman. even though the A is like bulk
Starting point is 00:14:22 That's just that's just not something that I would envision them even entertaining I think you yeah you you get laughed at for that for that deal if you if you come calling them honestly Until it happens Until it happens of course and then we get proven wrong and then we end up on old takes exposed So let's move on to to another trade idea here from at we can't score whose current name right now on Twitter says, currently Seattle Seahawks make me sad. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:57 I think the same goes for a lot of folks in the Pacific Northwest right now. So they say even though Jerry said the team will roll with the group they have at catcher, no rock will be left on turn in my eyes. The Mariners get Dodgers catcher Will Smith, while the Dodgers get Chris Flexen, Harry Ford, and Paul. Seawald. Who, that's a lot. I mean, I like Will Smith a lot.
Starting point is 00:15:24 The player, I mean, not a great actor, but the player is very good coming off of a great year. Well, the disrespect to the fresh prince of Bel Air, but. That Will Smith has kind of fallen off lately. But do like fresh friends. Independence Day. Fantastic. I mean, when did that come out? Like 25 years ago?
Starting point is 00:15:49 95 96 I think. So 25 years ago? I will not be questioned by you, Ty. So here's the deal, right? Catching is extremely valuable. Yes. So is starting pitching. And if you trade Chris Flexen, you have to replace him.
Starting point is 00:16:12 And now you need three starters instead of two. Right. Right. And by the way, I don't know if you saw us. Luke Arkins did this really fun side by. side thing. And in a lot of the numbers that really matter, flexen and Marcus Stroman were basically the same pitcher last year. So keep that in mind. And, you know, it's not, you know, Stroman obviously has a track record. I'm not saying there that they're
Starting point is 00:16:34 same guy, but flexin is not somebody that you just snap your fingers and replace. So, yeah. I mean, Will Smith, he's a really good player, particularly for the position he plays. but you're giving up also your best reliever, second best reliever, who you now have to replace. You're giving up a guy who right now is arguably your second best starter, certainly top three because you only have three, and you're giving up an elite prospect who might be able to catch long term for Will Smith.
Starting point is 00:17:11 That's just, that's a no for me. That's too much. Yeah. I like the player the price tag is ridiculous Yeah it's just like Don't get me wrong here Will Smith is a good player
Starting point is 00:17:24 I'm just Yeah Like I'm not super like I'm not to the point where I would I would trade one of my best starters One of my best prospects And my best reliever For him
Starting point is 00:17:39 He had a great year this year Don't get me wrong But also like why would the Dodgers do this I don't know That's a that's a lot a lot. That's a lot to get up. Two major league pieces that you're going to need next year. And, you know, arguably your third best prospect, fourth best prospect,
Starting point is 00:18:00 kind of depends on where you want to put them. But you're giving all of that up for one player. This isn't a player that puts you over the top. Not this year. He doesn't. So, no, it just, it's too much. It creates more holes than it fills, to be honest with you. But high grades for creativity.
Starting point is 00:18:16 yes for sure all right so uh thank you for the uh trade oh wait we got to we got to give out a grade um i'm gonna say 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 40 yeah yeah 42 all right so uh mj fb 80 80 on twitter three team trade here with the uh the marlins and the blue jays and this one is a lot. The Mariners get Jazz Chisholm and Jesus Lazzardo, two guys I love, so that would be awesome. The Marlins get Alejandro Kirk,
Starting point is 00:18:58 the Blue Jays catcher, plus Kyle Lewis and Emerson Hancock, and the Blue Jays get Elizer Hernandez and Drew's second rider. So, yeah, I think the only way that the Blue Jays would give up Kirk is for Pablo Lopez, not Hernandez.
Starting point is 00:19:19 And I just don't see the Marlins as well giving up two, you know, not just one of their starters, but two with Lazzardo, who they just traded Starling Marte for in an absolute steel with the A's. So, like, yeah, and I just don't think that the Mariners are given up enough to get Lazzardo and Chisholm here. Like I just don't think that Kyle Lewis, Emerson, Hancock, and Drew's second rider equate to Jazz Chisholm and
Starting point is 00:19:51 Hazel Losardo. So it's interesting. It's certainly creative. I just I just don't think the Mariners are giving up enough here. And I also don't think that the Marlins are necessary, or the sorry, the Blue Jays are necessarily getting the
Starting point is 00:20:07 piece that they would want to give Alejandro Kirk up for. Right. I It's like if you're if you're the Marl or you're the Blue Jays right. Steck and Ryder really doesn't matter to you. You could just go sign a Steck and Rider. Right. If you're giving up Kirk, you know, you need to maximize that.
Starting point is 00:20:27 So getting Steck and Rider, they'd rather have Lopez than Hernandez and Steck and Rider. Right. So if they can't get that, then they're not going to give up Kirk. So I don't think Miami is getting nearly enough here either. I know a lot of people love Alejandro Kirk. I'm kind of like, I mean, he's good. Like, don't get me wrong, but. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Don't love him as a prospect. Kyle Lewis and Emerson Hancock, they're going to be, I mean, Miami's buying low on both of those guys. They're hoping. So I just, I don't see Seattle, this getting it done for Seattle. And also, you know, Jazz Chisholm was a two and a half one player last year, who is still a young guy who's going to improve. I don't, I don't think the Marlins are going to trade him, period.
Starting point is 00:21:11 So I don't think Miami's getting enough. I think for them to pull the trigger on this because they're giving up three pieces. They need, you know, three young pieces. Right. I think they need like George Kirby in this deal or something. Yeah. For them to even consider it. So I just think Hancock and Lewis's value is way too low for them to accept this right now.
Starting point is 00:21:37 So, yeah, yeah, high grades for creativity. Hegarets for Creativity. I'm going to give this one a 48. Yeah, I'll go 50. Yeah, okay. All right, so we got three more trades to read off and grade in just a moment, but real quick,
Starting point is 00:21:55 a reminder of this episode of Lockdown Mariners is also brought to you by betonline.ag. It's Thanksgiving, and we all know what that means football. Starting point is 00:22:43 We're stuffed with deals this Thanksgiving. So we got three more trades to go over here, starting with Roshan Brat, who has a Mariners Yankee trade in which the Mariners give up Abraham Toro and Levi Stout for Glaber Torres and Aaron Hicks. I'm just going to say it. I would rather have Abraham Toro than Glover Torres right now. I don't know that I'd go that far, but I'd rather have Toro that. Torres and Hicks is contract if that makes sense. Plus Levi Stout, just he's better than this to be a throw-in, basically. Because I think Toro and Torres, honestly, I think they're probably about equal, in my eyes, at least.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Maybe I like Torres a little bit better, but it's not significant. And if I'm taking on Aaron Hicks contract, who, you know, if he's healthy, great. But he hasn't been for a while. And I have to give up Levi Stout, who's, you know, top 15 prospect for me. No, thanks. I'm, I'm going to say no to that one. I just, I don't feel like I'm getting better. Because I can't trust Aaron Hicks to play 50 games, let alone 120.
Starting point is 00:23:58 Yeah. Yeah, I just, uh, I'm not into the steel for the Mariners, really. I think the Yankees would certainly do it but yeah I'm just I don't like the deal for the Mariners so I'm going to give this one 40 that's about right yeah
Starting point is 00:24:20 all right thank you for the trade proposal Roshawn let's move on to Brett Howard at Mr. Brettley on Twitter another A's trade this one the Mariners get Matt Chapman again and also Frankie Monsis for Nelvie Marte, Levi Stout, and Matt Brash.
Starting point is 00:24:41 This is a hefty, hefty, hefty package. The baroners are giving up, but it might be what it takes to get both Montes and Chapman away from the A's, particularly Montes, with the two years of control that he has and the trajectory that he seems to be on. So not a chance in hell, not a chance. Yeah. Nope, not doing it. I'm laughing at the A's before they even get. the last name out. Nope. Nope. Nope. I'll go sign Eduardo Escobar and get the same value at third base. I'm fine. Love to have Montes, but not at that expense. So no, just hard pass. I think your
Starting point is 00:25:24 evaluation is pretty good. I could see Oakland asking for something like this. I would just, me personally, I would laugh in their face if they ask for this. That says a lot more about Matt Chapman, but I'm giving up two of my top five or six prospects and a really good pitcher and Levi Stout, a really good arm for two years of Matt Chapman, who I hope isn't completely broken at the plate in two years of Frankie Montas, who I like, but don't love. No, hard pass. Yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot to give up.
Starting point is 00:25:58 For the, I don't know, I guess because I do think that the asking price from the A's is, I I mean, that's probably what they would ask for or what they have asked for already in these discussions. I'll give this trade of 50. No, I will too. I just, again, if I'm Jerry Depoto, if David Force calls me or text me or whatever and throws this on the table, I'm laughing at him. I mean, like, let's get realistic here where you accept Juan Pinto and you do your famous bulk trade.
Starting point is 00:26:31 Or I'll give you one of Marte or Brash. I'm not giving you a bowl. So it's a lot. Yeah. Yeah. Way too much. All right. So last, last deal here coming from Maiden at SFNE 58 on Twitter.
Starting point is 00:26:51 It's another trade with the Marlins. This has been kind of popular. The Marlins received Taylor Tremel, Emerson, Hancock, and Juan 10 for Isan Diaz and Pablo Lopez. Not enough. Sorry. It's the big thing here is like the Marlins are seem pretty set on getting a catcher in return for Lopez. Like that's what they would, what they would aim to move him for because they don't really need to move him.
Starting point is 00:27:24 But if it landed them a catcher, they would do it. It seems like they're pretty open-minded to doing that. I just don't see enough here from the Mariners that can land Lopez-Lopez. alone, let alone Diaz as well. Because Diaz is a good prospect. If the Marlins are dead set on getting a catcher for Lopez, which is kind of stupid to say I want, I need this position to move this guy. Then the Mariners aren't going to get Pablo Lopez. They just, they just don't have a guy.
Starting point is 00:28:03 I mean, because I assume when they say they want a catcher, they want somebody they know can catch. Like they're not talking about Harry Ford, right? They want somebody they know is going to get to the big leagues as a catcher. And I just don't see the Mariners, A, giving up Cal Raleigh or B, the Marlins, like, being like, yeah, we'll take that Raleigh. I think they want a catcher that's already at the major leagues, right? That's why we've heard the Alejander Kirk rumors. Right. And we just, we don't, that doesn't exist.
Starting point is 00:28:29 So, I mean, that doesn't exist for the Mariners, I should say. So, yeah, Calderale isn't that guy. Luis Terenz isn't that guy. sorry uh yeah it's it's not it's not going to happen not like this and again tremel and hancock and tain you just pick three guys whose value went way down in uh in 2021 so that's not that's not gonna work yeah it's uh unfortunately just not going to be enough to uh to get one of those guys let alone both um so yeah it's this uh i i'm gonna give this one because you brought up Diaz,
Starting point is 00:29:10 who's the name that I haven't heard, that's creative. I'm going to give this one a 45. No, I'm going to give it a 40. Yeah. All right, so that's going to do it for all the trade proposals
