It's Fan Fiction Friday, the show where you submit your Mariners trade ideas,
and we grade them on the 2080 scale based on things like creativity, uniqueness,
and obviously if it makes sense for both teams.
But before we get into your trades,
It's our last show before the draft, which obviously kicks off on Sunday.
And I still have no idea what the Mariners are going to do.
Colby, you got any idea?
There seems to be a trend happening over the last 24-ish hours.
The consensus pick, or at least the player most people were most comfortable,
slotting to Seattle at 3
was Iva Arquette
from Oregon State.
That is not the case in the last
about handful of mock drafts that drop
and a handful drop every day now.
So it's a little tough to keep track of them.
But there does seem to be a shift towards pitching
at number three.
Oddly enough, it's not Jamie Arnold,
who is a fast-moving high-floor college
starter that the Mariners have.
Typically, you know,
targeted in the first round when they go pitching.
It's actually Seth Hernandez, who might be the most talented player in this entire
draft class, but he's a prep pitcher.
He's a high school pitcher, which the track record of drafting such players is not high
across the entire league.
It is often a poor return on investment when you take a prep arm in the top 10.
Hernandez has got a plus change up.
He's got a plus fast.
basketball. He's a good athlete. He throws strikes. So there's a lot to like their good build.
But you're still taking them at three. Whereas in the past, when the merits have taken shots on high school arms, it's been, you know, Ryan Sloan and Sam Carlson and Ash and Izzy and Michael Morales. And those are not top three picks that are being used on prep arms. So it's the riskiest demographic in the draft by far. It has the low success rate by far. And Seattle,
or at least the new consensus, which could change tomorrow,
seems to be that Seattle is leaning heavily towards Seth Hernandez.
Now, it's worth noting that whereas most people aren't even willing to entertain options at one and two,
other than Kate Anderson going one and Liam Doyle going two,
Seattle still has like five or six names being thrown in to the mix every single time,
right about them, which tells me that they don't really have a firm idea, where
as they feel really good that they know who picks one and two are and pick four,
they seem to really still not be 100% sure where pick three is going to head.
So it could be our cat still.
It could be, you know, it could be Hernandez.
It could be Jamie Arnold, even though we haven't heard that link, which is weird to me,
but whatever.
it could be Ike Irish on a discounted deal.
So I think there's still a lot of things they're considering.
I still think this is going to be mostly about money.
But it does seem like right now Seth Hernandez is the guy that most people are expecting Seattle to take.
And he might be the most talented player in the draft.
So it's not necessarily bad pick.
It's just that it's an extremely risky one.
Yeah, for sure.
when we had Joe Doyle on he said
Seth Hernandez would be the only prospect in this draft that he would put above
Colt Emerson so if they draft Hernandez you may very well have a new number one in your farm system
and you might have a guy that's already pushing the top 10 of all prospects in major league baseball
so from that aspect that's really exciting but on the other hand like you mentioned there's
obviously all the issues that prep arms have run into there's just the high high risk of that
I mean, we just saw what happened with Jackson Job of the Tigers.
So that's kind of the cautionary tale there.
But, yeah, I mean, he's, I think it's pretty clear he's by far the most talented dude in this class.
And so if the Mariners want to, you know, swing for the fences here, go for it.
Yeah.
Again, you know, part of the problem is how much money are they actually going to be willing to save here?
and I still think that saving the money to spend later on in the draft, just to clarify,
is an important factor here.
So if Hernandez is willing to take under slot by about a million bucks,
I would be very interested in that.
But he's got a Vanderbilt commit.
He's got a lot of leverage.
So we'll see that ends up being the case.
It's worth noting that Kylie McDaniel in their mock draft said that,
Jamie Arnold would be the runner up to Seth Hernandez.
So there's a mention.
Kate Anderson's the top player on their board.
Ike Irish, Ava Arquette, Liam Doyle, and Jojo Parker seem to be secondary options,
quote, I believe in that order.
There you go.
Another six, seven names still connected to the Mariners.
I do think this is still about some bonus pool money that they're trying to figure out here.
but I think at this stage it's you know you pretty much have to make a decision now I mean the draft is in
48 50 hours whatever it is so you got to make a decision here and you also have to know if you can get
Hernandez for X amount and what jojo parker's willing to take what ike irish is willing to take you have to
know that yeah you're pretty close so or pretty soon so we'll see but right now I think
it's really hard to get a read on this I think unless
they're going to get like a really big discount,
which I think they can only do on Irish.
Everybody else is turned in their medicals.
So they have to get at least 75% of slot.
I think Hernandez is the pick if they can get them for about a million under slot,
which would still be about $8.5 million.
But if they can't, then I think maybe they'd take Arcad.
My guess is that they don't want to spend any more than 8.5 of that first spot,
try and push a million bucks down further down to use elsewhere.
So probably whoever's willing to take the deal first is the one that they take.
But yeah, there's definitely a trend towards pitching in particular Seth Hernandez over the last 24 hours or so.
Yeah.
I mean, if the Mariners feel that Seth Hernandez is just a special talent and a draft that doesn't really have that at the top, then I totally understand why they would come to that conclusion and take him.
Especially because when are you going to get this opportunity to draft?
this high and drafted talent like that again.
It's also worth noting that three days ago now.
So old information,
Heathlaw had Seattle taking Arquette,
but also mentioned to watch Ike Irish here on a value deal.
So the Ike Irish chatter is not quieting down
as we get closer to the draft,
which, you know,
kind of sort of reminds me of when the Orioles took Kestan Kirstata too.
And that chat.
slowly started to build and then on draft day it just it popped so yeah we'll see but uh yeah
i still don't have a good feel for this pick at all all right well it is fan fiction friday so we're
going to get into your trades in just a moment but first a reminder of this episode of the long time

trades here on fan fiction Friday. Quick update on our Feeding America fundraiser,
which is coming to a close here in the next couple of days.
We have gotten a few more donations in between our last episode.
And today's Jarrett came through with $25.
Bob with $50, anonymous with $25,
Alan with $50, and anonymous with $50,
which brings us to a grand total of $11,095.
raised. So Colby, it is spiel time. It's the last spiel time of this fundraiser. Go, go, go, go, go, go.
Yes, we are trying to feed America by partnering with feeding America. Imagine that.
But yes, feeding America is a fantastic organization that aims to solve the problem of hunger in America.
It's absolutely ridiculous that this problem exists.
We have the food.
We have the resources to make this a non-existent problem in our country.
And unfortunately, for a myriad of reasons, that is not the case because more than 50 million Americans do not know where their next meal is coming from, including one out of every five children in this country.
You have no idea when they're going to eat next.
And if you don't know when your next meal is going to come from,
If you don't know how long you're going to be hungry,
nothing else really matters in life.
That is the essential.
So Feeding America is a fantastic organization.
That turns every dollar raised into at least 10 meals for people who desperately need them.
And that's why we love partnering with them.
So so far, you guys have helped us raise, what, 110,000 meals?
And we only have the weekend left today and this weekend left,
The fundraiser does end on Monday.
So time to dig deeper at 11,000.
See how high we could kick this thing up to?
I know it's tough because the Mariners aren't playing well right now.
And they just lost in a devastating way.
But you know what's tougher than that?
Not having food for four days.
So I don't know.
Maybe get off your butt and start donating again because we're ending hunger here,
one meal at a time, one dollar at a time.
That's right.
It starts with you at Seattle Mariners.
Tag at the Mariners and ask them where their donation is.
All right.
They're not feeding our souls with the way they're playing baseball right now.
So the least they could do is feed hungry people in this country by donating to this fundraiser.
You feel me, brother?
But yeah, anyways, you guys can also, you guys can donate using the link in the description.
You can also help out by subscribing to the YouTube channel.
Ty and I are donating 10 cents or one meal.
for every new subscriber that we got during this time frame.
And I believe we're at about plus 300.
So that's 300 meals just for people clicking a button.
Again, share the link with your friends and your family and your employer.
If you haven't already, if you have, maybe, you know, nudged the employer and be like,
hey, you guys said, you know, that you were willing to do this.
So, you know, now or never.
And yeah, feel free to add the Mariners and ask them if they can't feed our souls.
Can they at least feed some hungry people?
And make sure you use that burbages because I find being like really hostile works on social media.
So yeah, let's see what we can do here on this last weekend.
It's been an incredible fundraiser so far.
Still an opportunity to finish strong here.
But yeah, thanks to everybody who has donated,
everybody who is going to donate in the future.
And everybody who shared the links and subscribed to the channel
and helped out in any way they could,
we really do appreciate it.
And we'll see where we're at on Monday.
And that'll be that.
But so far, a pretty successful fundraiser.
But it could be bad.
It could be better.
I mean, I don't know.
Maybe the reason the Mariners lost yesterday is because we didn't get that many donations.
I don't know.
Prove that it wasn't that.
Might be connected.
Who's the same?
Who's to say?
All right.
Well, while you guys hopefully continue to feed America, let's feed some 20 grades to these
people who submitted these trades.
Brandon has a deal with the Minnesota twins.
Mariners get Yon Duran and Willie Cachshack.
for Tai Pete,
your hair,
Batista,
Michael Morales,
and Tyler Guff.
Yeah,
you're not giving up
nearly enough here to get Duran,
uh,
Duran.
Uh,
it's,
it's,
he's an elite reliever with,
I think two,
three years of club control left.
I think it's two.
I think it's two.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Uh,
so this package alone probably doesn't get you him.
And Willie Castro while he is a rental,
uh,
is still pretty good hitter,
you know,
can play multiple positions.
Uh,
and,
Minnesota is hanging around 500 just enough that they are probably thinking like,
hey, you know, it's, it's, who knows, even though we're 14 games back in Detroit, like maybe.
So you do need to nudge them a little bit to make moves like this.
So ultimately, you're not giving up enough for Duran.
I think half of the deal is good for Willie Castro.
Yeah.
I think something like Tai Pete and Michael Morales.
is probably in the neighborhood for what Castro would cost,
maybe Tyler Guff.
Like take one of the bats and one of the arms,
and that is a pretty good offer for two months of Willie Castro, I think.
But the rest of what you have here is not nearly enough to get Duran.
You're going to have to give up Lazz or maybe even Colt Emerson
to get the Twins to move Duran.
And so unfortunately, because of that inclusion,
this is like a 30.
If you cut this trade in half, you take out Duran,
you take out one pitcher, you take out one hitter, and it's just for Willie Castro, it's probably a 55.
Like, that's probably pretty good.
But you just overshot it here a little bit, unfortunately.
So, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, the Castro aspect of this is totally fine.
Like you said, it would pretty much be on the money for what I think he's going to go for.
But, yeah, this adding Duran to this makes it non-competitive.
Yeah.
I don't even think it really gets the conversation started.
I doubt it.
Yeah, so I'm going to go 30.
Really the only reason that it's not lower is because of the Castro element.
Next trade here from Alex.
Marrins get C.J. Abrams.
Nationals get Las Montas, Harry Ford, Ty Pete, Michael Morales, and Tyler Locklear.
I think you need a third headliner here.
Abrams is having an incredible year.
Yeah.
Now, the nationals, unlike some other teams that people love to throw Harry Ford at, actually makes sense for Harry Ford.
They desperately need catching help, and Kyra Ruiz is not it.
So they need the catching help.
And obviously, Las Montes is a great lottery ticket and a high upside one at that.
Tai Pete, Michael Morales, Tyler Locklear, that's just not enough.
I don't think because Abrams has two years of club control after this year.
And he's in the midst of a breakout season.
He's in his prime athletically.
And the nationals have been so patient bringing him along that it seems unlikely that they would just dump him now.
So it's not terrible.
I think you need to replace Pete with somebody like probably somebody like a royal to peak the interest.
I don't think the nationals are going to be all that interested in guys that they view that they view as two, three years away.
I think they still want to try and project that they're going to contend next year, which is why they fired their GM and all that.
Yeah.
Plus they've already started the clock on James Wood.
So they want to try and take advantage of that, especially while he's cheap and not making arbitration.
Mackenzie Gore is starting to make some money.
So, like, they're kind of in there.
They're kind of in a spot where they need to be in their window.
So, yeah, I think this is a little.
too much bulk, not enough upside for a player like Abrams.
But I don't think it's terrible.
So 45.
I'll go 50.
It's actually one of the better CJ Abrams trades we've gotten.
We've gotten a lot of CJ Abrams trades over the last few weeks.
But I don't think this would get into it.
I guess more my thing is like I just have doubts that the nationals would even trade CJ Abrams right now for what we just talked about that they're kind of
their window right now. They need to take advantage
of that. I just feel like it's more likely that
they might try and extend him rather than trade
him. Now maybe if they get to the
last year of his deal and
they're not able to extend him, maybe
at that point they entertain it, but I don't think they would do
that now.
Yeah, I think they feel pretty good
about where they're at with Abrams
in particular after the whole thing at the end
of last year. I think
they feel like they've reached a breakthrough
point with him.
Not having a good year.
but Luis Garcia
could be the pivot here
and I think that
Harry Ford,
Tai Pete,
Thai-Laklear thing
probably starts a conversation
at least for him.
So yeah,
the nationals are still a team to watch.
They have a couple pieces
that the Mariners
could in theory be interested in
like Lowe and Finnegan
and Garcia and call
and maybe CJ Abrams
said they're actually being shopped.
So yeah,
I'll say 45.
It's pretty good.
All right, we will go over more of your trades here in just a moment.

Let's get back into your trades here on Fan Fiction Friday.
Connor has a deal with the Giants.
It's a selling move.
Randy Rosa Rana and Luis Castillo to the Giants for Bryce Eldridge
and Hayden Birdsong.
I don't think you're shopping at the top shelf.
with the giants if you're including
Luis Castillo on the steel because obviously
there's the hurdle that you have to overcome
of the no trade clause still until
January 1st
and then
he's obviously making a bit of money
and so that's just going to decrease his
value and I think
in turn that that hurts
the trade value of Randy a Roserana
so I don't think you would get
Bryce Eldridge in the steel
I don't even know if you would get Bryce Eldridge
for Randy of Roserana straight up
with the Giants.
Yeah, I guess the one nice thing there is that they
literally just traded for Devers
who's going to be a first baseman for them
and they have Chapman.
So Eldridge
blocked for now.
Yeah. Could slide them in the outfield, but
the first basement playing in that outfield
down there in San Francisco
not ideal.
I guess Devers would D.H. and Eldridge
would play first. Yeah, you could do that.
Sure. But we also know they're going to be
on on Pinozzo this summer, of course, they are.
But yeah, we'll see.
I think Randy Rosarena feels the need for them, a pretty good one.
And I think they would be interested in Castillo.
And it's probably a team that Luis would waive his no trade clause for,
which is in effect until, you know, January 1st.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But we're assuming that guys wait their no trade clauses when we put them on
fan fiction Friday.
Yeah.
So, yeah.
I don't quite understand the fascination with the bird song.
Like, I know he's got pretty good stuff, but the results have just never been there.
I guess it's about replacing, I guess it's about replacing Castillo.
Yeah.
I don't really see it.
I wonder, you know, with all the money that is connected to these two guys, would the giants still part ways with Eldridge?
Because while the giants are willing to spend, it's still like $30 million, or $35 million,
you're going to add to their payroll next year with these two guys.
And they've just added Devers contract, all of it.
And so, you know, they just signed Adamas and Chapman.
So they have a lot of money invested already.
I wonder if maybe that plays into this a little bit.
But the Mariners did sell, which they're not going to.
Eldridge would be a really good target to try and snag.
He's a good, good hitter, uh, profiles well, team mobile park.
And the Mariners really don't have a, a first baseman, uh, at the moment.
So he might be willing to help you even a little bit this year, but, uh, make no mistake.
You're not making this deal thinking like, oh, we could still compete this year.
Like, nope, nope, you're, you're, you're folding up shop on 20, 25 if you make this deal.
But yeah, yeah, I don't know, 45, 50, I'm just a little concerned about how much of money, uh, the
giants are really willing to take on.
Yeah, you're probably going to have to hold.
on to some of the Castillo money or maybe take on some money back from the Giants or both like maybe
you get Justin Verlander back in the steel just to take on the rest of his contract for the year.
Yeah.
I mean, there aren't a lot of contracts that I think the Giants would be willing to part with though.
So that's kind of tough.
They traded Jordan Hicks already.
Yeah.
So it's kind of Verlander or nothing.
So you're probably just going to have to hold on to some Castillo salary.
Right.
And even then, I don't know if that's going to be enough to get you, Bryce,
Eldridge.
Yeah, I don't know.
I think it'll be a little more available, but
than you seem to think.
But who knows?
I do think if I'm trading Randy or Rosarina,
I want somebody like a Bryce Eldridge.
Sure.
Like that's the type of prospect I'm targeting
if I'm trading Randy this summer.
Next trade here from Cooper.
Twins get Las Montas,
Harry Ford, and Duranlo Sanger for
Byron Baxter.
Favorite of yours, Colby.
I don't think the twins are going to trade Buckson.
And there's obviously a lot of risk here because Buxons played in over 100 games, I believe twice in his entire career.
And one of those seasons, it was like 103.
Yeah.
So he's very good hitter.
He's not going to do it this year, though, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Very good hitter, tons of power.
Still an elite center fielder, although he can't play out there every day.
You got to kind of take it easy on him.
But, you know, you got to manage his work.
workload and all that, but he's an incredible player.
He's one of my favorite non-mariners.
I don't think the twins are going to move him.
Also, I believe he still has three full years on that contract left.
Now, it's at a very reasonable cost.
So it's not anything that, but he is in his 30s.
He does have an injury history.
He does have some legitimate red flags attached to him.
And his technique, I mean, really just his body and his workload management is the red
flag here on him.
But yeah, I like him a lot.
I think this is a pretty aggressive
trade for a guy like him
with his injury history.
I just don't think the twins are going to move him.
But if they did
in Seattle gave this up for him,
I'd be pretty happy about that.
I think if the twins
are, you know, get this
put on their table. Like they have to at least
go like,
hmm.
Maybe.
They're talking about it, yeah.
Yeah. Maybe we should
consider those. Yeah, I think
this is actually a really good deal
here. I think it's
aggressive enough that it makes the twins at least think about it.
I also
think that it's an appropriate
risk for the merits to take at this
particular time.
It obviously checks off the boxes
of club control and the things that matter
the most to the front office.
There's obviously
the red flags, but
yeah, I think I'm going to
to go 60, 65 on this one.
Yeah, I'll go 55.
Okay.
Last deal of the day comes from Jeff.
It's another buying move with the Minnesota Twins.
This time it's Troy Taylor, Juan Burgos, and Logan Evans,
two Minnesota for Willie Castro and Harrison Bader.
You guys love the twins.
And I mean, I get it.
They have a lot of guys that make sense for the Marys.
Harrison Bader is another one that makes a lot of sense for the Marys.
Yeah.
You think this gets it done?
No, I think in this case, it's choose one and you might have a shot at him.
Yeah.
You're not getting both for this.
I see Troy Taylor getting put in a lot of deals and I just, I don't really get it.
Like, I don't know what if he has any value right now after the year that he's had.
I mean, same goes for Burgos.
He's fine.
Like every team in baseball has, has their Juan Burgos.
Yeah.
And every team of baseball has their Troy.
sailors.
Yeah.
So trading Logan Evans for one of these guys makes some sense for Minnesota.
You know, they might be shopping Joe Ryan.
They might be shopping Pablo Lopez.
Maybe not.
They're going to lose, you know, Bailey Ober's on the aisle right now.
They're going to lose Paddock this winter almost certainly.
So they might have a neat, although they have David Festo.
So even Evans might not be enough.
But it is a guy like in that range, a prospect that is probably worthy to headline
or co-headline a deal for a quality rental,
which is what Castro and Bader are,
their quality players with limited club control.
So, yeah, like maybe the twins really like Taylor's stuff
and Evans is just a good solid gift for them.
So maybe you can get Bader or Castro for something like that.
Although I still think Tapeet is a really good, you know,
player to swap for Willie Castro.
or Ty Pete's a really good player to swap for just about any rental, in my opinion.
He's exactly the type of guy that with the upside he has and the age and the tools and all that.
Yeah, that's an appropriate guy to take a shot on if you're trading a rental.
Because he could end up being a really good player.
He could also never sniff the big leagues.
And that's kind of the type of guys you look for when you trade rentals.
So, yeah, I think this deal in general, no.
you might get one of those guys for this package.
But even then, I think you probably need a little better than Logan Evans as a headliner here.
And it really comes down to do they see any value in Troy Taylor whatsoever?
And maybe they do.
I certainly could see a team being interested in Troy Taylor, but it seems unlikely.
So I'm going to say 35, 40.
Yeah, yeah, I'm filling a 35.
I just I'm with you I think it gets you one of them maybe but not both not both at all
but I like the Harrison Bader call it's a good call
this guy that's sitting well against both lefties and right-handed outfield bat
Marys could use one of those so yeah all right that is going to do it for our show
