Starting point is 00:00:08 Welcome to Locked-on Mariner's, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Here's your host, D.C. Lundberg. It is Monday, gang, and the high temperatures all this week are not supposed to drop below 90 here in the Lilac City. Tomorrow, supposed to be 95. Fortunately, my house has air conditioning, so lots of AC for D.C. With that, welcome to Lockdown Mariters. Ladies and gentlemen. part of the Locked-on Podcast Network or T-L-O-P-N or T-L-O-P-N or T-Lopin.
Starting point is 00:00:45 Please remember to download, rate, and subscribe to Locked-on Mariners on Google Podcast, Apple Podcast, Spotify, Stitcher Radio, or whichever podcasting app that you personally care to use. Ask your smart device to play Locked-on Mariners podcast or Locked-on- Anything podcast. Follow us on Twitter at LO underscore Mariners and follow me on Twitter at DC. underscore Lundberg, that is L-U-N-D-B-E-R-G, if you are indeed scoring at home. With us today again from Locked-on Anaheim Ducks, Jason Hernandez. Jason, how goes it, sir? So would Locked-on anything be about random stuff like, say, the books of the 19th century,
Starting point is 00:01:33 or maybe Victorian architecture? Ooh. Or maybe it's something about pilots. Not the baseball team, actual pilots. I like where you're going. You know, we actually ought to do this. We got to talk to David Lockham, by doing locked on anything with just the two of us.
Starting point is 00:01:50 And it's just like the most random crap that you can think of for 20 minutes at a time. I like this idea. Because we don't do that enough outside of that. No, we don't. And the second half of this program is not getting much different. We can't do that now because of actual baseball happening soon. There is actual baseball happening.
Starting point is 00:02:07 soon. I still can't believe it. Still can't believe it. The first part of this program today is going to kind of go off what Jason and I talked about last time he was on the show. And that's the Seattle Mariners seat fleet. We're going to do it. As a matter of fact, we're going to do this while we're on the air today. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is groundbreaking internet radio. Not really. What I'm going to do, Jay, I have taken my picture. I have a picture. I have a picture myself. Jason's going to do this for the both of us, and then I will pay him back the money that I will owe him since it's going to go on the same order because we want to sit together.
Starting point is 00:02:45 He has not seen the picture yet that I intend to use. So what I am doing right at this exact moment is texting him this picture, and then once he gets that, he'll laugh very hard, and then he'll place the order. So Jason, are you ready? Oh, no. Oh, no? Here it comes. Boy, this silence makes for great radio, doesn't it, Jason. We're going to edit that out, obviously. Actually, I don't know if I'm going to. And while I'm waiting for this, as it is beginning to download, yeah, this is going really great.
Starting point is 00:03:21 This could be a very fun little, oh my gosh. That is intimidating. Why is it intimidating? Well, the facial hair just looks like, dang, it almost looks like, it is turn ahead the clock. Yeah. But there's such a style. That's amazing.
Starting point is 00:03:46 I do love the turn ahead the clock gear. That is awesome. Thank you very much. I guess I will order now. Let's do that. And if you would please walk us through the process as it's ongoing and I'll try to be funny during it.
Starting point is 00:04:01 Ah, well, I will tell you. Good. So let's start sharing this. There we go. So you can see the screen, yes? Yes, Jason, I can see the screen. So for those of you that want to do this, you have to create yours now.
Starting point is 00:04:16 Join the seat fleet at T-Mobile Park. Get a fellow fan to take your picture, which, you know, we've got plenty of pictures. Keep your hand gestures within your body with. DC looks pretty intimidating. I do not. If we can see ourselves on TV, that would be amazing. So there's a big button that says,
Starting point is 00:04:38 join the fleet. Oh. So you go into this Mariners shop. I still can't. This is the big thing. $30. $30, gang. By far the cheapest in all the major leagues,
Starting point is 00:04:51 which I still can't believe that Mariners are doing that. With a chance for a foul ball, which there's a third team that has jumped into the free on offering foul balls. It's the Tampa Bay raise, is it not, Jason? Yes, it is. and it looks like we're going to have to do this off air
Starting point is 00:05:09 because I have to send this to the computer. Oh, that's a bummer. Yeah, it looks like it because we have to get the photos all in place. I have to get mine in place. So we get to do this off air. Okay. But the way you do it is very, very easy.
Starting point is 00:05:22 Just make sure you have your photo on the device that you're going to order with. So if you have this on your phone, you could do the picture from your phone. If you happen to have the picture on, your laptop or desktop, then you order it from there. And there you go.
Starting point is 00:05:40 So, of course, D.C. Turn ahead. I'm going to do the opposite. Yes, you are. The exact opposite. Yep. He's going to go Seattle Mariners from the future. I'm going to go Seattle Steelheads of the past. Go Steelies.
Starting point is 00:05:52 Yeah. With the Steelheads cap, yes, I actually have one of those. I noticed that they're going for sale now on the Seattle Mariners team store, on the official team shop. and they have the Steely's hats with the new era logo on it. I'm very happy that I got the cap in 2015 without that logo on it. Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:14 Authentic, baby. Yes. That is the one thing that has ticked me off about turn back at the clock night the last few seasons. That new era has basically ruined it because the caps are not authentic anymore. They insist on having their logo on the side of the cap, which didn't exist when they're, during the time, the uniforms of the turn back the clock are being worn. It's a little thing, maybe, but it still pisses me off because it's no longer authentic. I mean, the quality has gone down slightly on the caps.
Starting point is 00:06:48 Well, you're talking to someone that has caps from every baseball team. Yeah. So that's my thing is, if I go to a new ballpark, I have to get the cap from the ballpark. I don't have one cap from those 30 teams that I got. elsewhere, so to speak. Yeah. So that's kind of my thing. But looking at the caps,
Starting point is 00:07:11 comparing between maybe 2005 and today, yeah, it's world's different. Is the sizing different because I don't remember when this was, but it was in the last 10 or so years, perhaps, that I was a certain cap size and all of a sudden I would get
Starting point is 00:07:27 that same hat size and it would be too big. It has gotten a little looser. So the seven, my old seven and three eighths cap fits a little bit tighter if I have a lot of hair. Right. If I'm fresh cut like I am right now, then it fits just fine. Okay. That's not a problem that I run into since haircuts and I aren't exactly on the same page, as it were.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Yeah. I haven't had one in a while. But still, the sizing was throwing me off, and I was wondering if that was the case. They did change it. They did. Okay. But not by much. Not by much.
Starting point is 00:08:02 It's just about time for the, Mariner's trivia question. Today, it's this. Who appeared in the most games for the M's last season? Answer following a word from CBDMD. Starting point is 00:09:41 So the question, who had the most games last year? Who appeared in the most M's games last year? Yeah. I'm going to go with someone that probably has a lot of pinch hitting. Let's go Malix Smith. He's number two. He's number two? Yep.
Starting point is 00:09:56 Let's see, Manninger got hurt. He did indeed. Oh, balls. What? That's what he hurt. How about Vogelbach then? That is the correct answer, yes, sir. Hey, I got a second try. Daniel Vogelback, 144 games for the Mariners, Malix Smith, 134 games.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Oh, okay. The now Brewer, Omar Narvaez, with 133, and Domingo Santana, the current Indian, 121 games. And we will be back after this. Now time for the second half, Locked-on Mariners. Once again, your host, D.C. Lundberg. And first base. Thank you, Joey Martin. Back on Locked-on Mariners is D.C. Lundberg with, of course, Jason Hernandez,
Starting point is 00:10:57 host of Locked-on Anaheim Ducks. Yo. We were planning on joining the seat fleet on the air, but not all of our ducks were in a row, as it were. Oh, that was horrible. So we'll do it off there, but we didn't kind of walk you through the process, And if you want to do it, you kind of know what it entails. Jason said it's very, very easy.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Just have to have the pictures that you want to use on the device you're using at the time, which is something that, which is something we didn't take into account. No, we didn't. No, we did not do that. However, Jason, the second half of the program, we're going to switch gears and talk about something that was brought up on last Saturday show when Taylor Blake Ward and I were here reminiscing about some of our, you know, favorite baseball players, Gore.
Starting point is 00:11:43 Yeah. We're not necessarily favorite baseball players, but players that we've had encounters with are players that we admired. And the player we're going to talk about today. I still cannot believe that Corey Hart story. That was amazing. Oh, and here's a side note. His wife's name, Christina.
Starting point is 00:12:00 Nice. I don't know if she was named after the Rick Springfield song or not, but it is Christina spelled the same way. That is awesome. Yes. I mean, I know that kind of would not fly nowadays. No. The fact that.
Starting point is 00:12:12 I mean, he was head over heels and love. You know? Yeah. That's the kind of thing that used to happen. Not anymore. I don't know where to go from there because... Let's just talk about Tuiasasopo, all right? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:12:28 Oh, that story, yes. Yeah, we're going to talk about the called home run, which was brought up just in... Not in passing, but we didn't get into it because we didn't have the time. We are going to get into it today and talk about exactly what led up to that and what exactly happened.
Starting point is 00:12:45 And Jason, I know this is one of your favorite stories, and I will let you take it, sir. Oh, this one's absolutely amazing. So this took place all the way back. Let me actually look up the year again. I want to say it's 16, but I could be way off. No, this was a long time ago. I want to say 2008 or 2009.
Starting point is 00:13:08 Oh, holy Toledo. This is a long time ago. I've gotten to the point where 10 years ago seems like 2000, and 15 years ago seems like 1995. I'm old, ladies and gentlemen. Not that old.
Starting point is 00:13:26 That's what I keep telling myself, yeah. Actually, no, the other reason this came up, so the other reason this came up personally was there was something that I really liked watching on YouTube going down the rabbit hole. And this was the recent Seattle Mariners YouTube series from Dorktown. I sent this to you. Have you watched it yet?
Starting point is 00:13:49 You've sent it to me twice. You haven't watched it, have you? My silence speaks volumes, does it not? Oh, it's so good. It is so amazing. So, D.C., you get to do yourself a favor now. Next weekend, or on one of these random nights, actually, here's what you can do.
Starting point is 00:14:08 Here's your quote-unquote homework. All right. It's a five-part series. Hmm. There is five nights in a week. There are indeed. Just saying, one part a night. Watch it with your housemate.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Watch with whoever's there. It's a fun watch. So this took place on September 27, 2009, between the Blue Jays and the Seattle Mariners. It was at Skydome. I remember that. That Skydome. Yes.
Starting point is 00:14:35 And Mike Blowers, before the game, predicted exactly what was going to happen. on the radio. And this took place on the pregame. So it was Blowers and Rick Riz was there, which is still amazing to me that he said that Matt Tuisopo would get a home run on his second at bat on a fastball from Brian Talit on a three-in-one count. And he said on the radio that the ball would land in the second deck of left center field. So what happened? Well, it happened in the fifth inning. Top of the fifth inning, three to one count, and Dave Nehouse got so excited when it became a three and one count. When it was his second at bat, Dave Nehouse said, okay,
Starting point is 00:15:22 let's see what happens. And that should have been my clue that it was much longer ago than 2016 that Dave Nehouse was involved with this. Yeah. So the count goes, you know, one and one. Then it goes to two and one, and then we say, oh boy, this could happen. So Dave Neyhouse is starting to get excited about it. And he's thinking, what if this actually happens? Next pitch is a ball, and Dave Neathouse gets excited. And he was really excited on a three-in-one count. Yep.
Starting point is 00:15:52 This part of it is broadcast on the YouTube video. And then what happens next? Three-in-one count. Brian Tellett sends a meatball to Matt to Isisipos way, and he drills it to left field. Just missing, well, it got up to the first deck. But, yeah, home run, nonetheless, on a second at bat, on a fastball, on a three and one counts. Kid you not.
Starting point is 00:16:24 And Dave Nehouse goes completely ballistic. As only he could. It was one of his better calls of all time. Absolutely. He even let out a my, oh my. on that one. Usually Dave Nehouse saves that for the big moments. You know, when you think of Dave Nehouse saying,
Starting point is 00:16:47 my, oh my, you think of Edgar Martinez. You think of Ken Griffey Jr. You don't necessarily think of Matt Toysosopo, but it happens that day. Mike Blowers gave to Yassasopo a famous Dave Nehouse, one of his final, my oh mys. Absolutely. Mm-hmm.
Starting point is 00:17:08 Blowers did go on TV later and said, you know, he knew that talent likes to throw fastballs. So he knew that that was possibly going to be his pitch on three and one. Mm-hmm. So, of course, he figured that might happen. And sure enough, you know, Niehaus saying, I see the light, is still one of these seminal moments in not only Matt Toys Zopo's career, but in Seattle Mariners history. Yes, I'm saying that on the air.
Starting point is 00:17:39 That called shot is one of the best moments in Mariners history. My favorite part of the story, though, Jason, is that after Tuiasa Sopo hit that home run, Blowers left Skydome and found the nearest casino and spent the rest of the evening on OTB and made about $31,000. Yes. No, he didn't do that, but, you know.
Starting point is 00:18:02 But that would have been amazing if he did. I would have gone, I would have, tried my luck. If he's going to be that accurate, I would have gone to the track or whatever. I don't gamble, ladies and gentlemen. I'm not a gambler. This is all humor, but I would have at least bought a lottery ticket or two. Yeah, buy a lottery ticket, go to the casinos, you know, have a couple of lucky chances on roulette. See what happens. Yes. 35 to one shot. What could happen?
Starting point is 00:18:27 Yeah, that's how much lucky was having that day. That clip is on YouTube, but DC, I do recommend watching that series because They talk about that one moment, like it is the defining moment of the decade. Of that decade other than 2001, it may have been. One of the seminal moments, yes. Of that era of Mariners' baseball, which was just garbage, that's definitely one of the best ones. Well, because you can tell, well, on that series, they do love Dave Nehouse. They use a lot of his calls.
Starting point is 00:19:04 Excellent. He's very prominently, I guess, highlighted in that whole series. So, again, it's worth watching. You should check it out. After listening to everything else on locked on networks, of course. Oh, absolutely. But, you know, it's good entertainment just to hear more about the called shot. One thing I want to bring up about Dave Nehaw, specifically moving away from the home run,
Starting point is 00:19:27 and how beloved he still is in Seattle. And one of his most famous calls, and maybe his... His signature call was the double, hit by Edgar Martinez, which defeated the Yankees in the division series and sent them to the American League Championship Series in 1995. When the games are replayed on both root sports here locally and nationally on MLB Network, they used the television call from ABC, Brett Musberg. It is such a dichotomy. that is one of the most boring calls on a key moment. I wish that they would mix in the radio call for the TV broadcast, which they have done before.
Starting point is 00:20:16 Root Sports did that with, pardon me, MLB Network did that for Gaylord Perry's 300th game, which I believe was nationally televised on the USA cable network. They had Dave Nehouse's radio call over the USA broadcast. So they've done it before. At least locally here in Southern California, we're blessed to have some of the best broadcasters of all time when they would replay Dodger games.
Starting point is 00:20:40 It's always Vince Scully. If they don't have his TV, they can find his radio call. That's great. If you are in San Diego of recent games, they'll play the Dick Enberg. On a lot of other moments, they will play the call with Jerry Coleman. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:58 Oh, Doctor. one of the best. And even going outside of baseball, when you think about basketball, almost every Lakers and Clippers replay is either Chick-Hern or Ralph Lawler. And then even going further,
Starting point is 00:21:13 L.A. Kings, Bob Miller, one of the best radio broad or one of the best hockey broadcasters of all time. He did an amazing job with the L.A. Kings. Even did an amazing job in the Mighty Ducks films. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:21:27 Oh. We're kind of lucky here. One thing, but the Dave Nehouse radio broadcast of that game, they've played it on radio before. The Mariners know exactly where it is. They could overlay it over the TV broadcast if they wanted to. They're just really lazy now. You mentioned The Mighty Ducks.
Starting point is 00:21:45 I was at a thrift store the other day with Shannon, my friend and my housemate, and we found the Mighty Ducks on VHS. A definite winner. I've never seen the movie. and I bought it. I bought it. You're finally going to watch The Mighty Ducks. Yes.
Starting point is 00:22:04 So in the film features a hockey team that no longer exists and an arena that no longer exists. Is it the Hartford Whalers? It is not the Hartford Whalers. Damn, okay. But something else kind of interesting. So the arena that is featured
Starting point is 00:22:23 in the Mighty Ducks film was the is the current site of something else. Can you guess what that is? Now we're going into general trivia, but this does come back to baseball, I promise. All right. So what famous landmark in Minnesota
Starting point is 00:22:41 is the current site of where that team used to play? Think about it in Minnesota. What's a big landmark there? Paul Bunyan. No. I have no idea. I think Nickelodeon. Minnesota?
Starting point is 00:22:55 Yeah. And Nickelodeon. Yeah. What on earth do those two things have to do with each other? Well, I mean, there's a whole universe about it. It's in fact called Nickelodeon universe where they have roller coaster type stuff inside the Mall of America. Oh! So a little bit of trivia.
Starting point is 00:23:17 Yeah. The Met Center, which is where the Minnesota North Stars used to play, was in Bloomington, Minnesota. I see. That is the current side. of Mall of America. All of America. All right. So how does this relate back to baseball?
Starting point is 00:23:33 Did you know that Mall of America is also the site of a former baseball stadium? I think I did know that on some level. Yeah, it was called Metropolitan Stadium. Metro. Yeah. See, that's why they were called those things Met Center and Met Stadium. Twins and North Stars played next door for a while. That's why they called it that.
Starting point is 00:23:55 I bet you didn't know that, huh? I know now. Yeah. So see, it always comes back to sports in some way. It always does come back to sports in some way. And, J.D., I think it's just about time to wrap up the program. There's one more little tidbit I've got to tell you about Mall of America. Please do.
Starting point is 00:24:13 And then we've got to go. The Metropolitan Stadium is where Mall of America is. There is a single seat on a wall in Mall of America that is where Harmon Killebrew's longest home run landed inside Mall of America. That seat is still on a far wall in the mall. I think I knew that on some level, too. It sounds very familiar. And the home plate is right in the middle of the Nickelodeon universe theme park.
Starting point is 00:24:42 There you go. So, yeah, there you go. You know, Jason, we do have to go. But this trivia stuff, I love this trivia stuff. Yeah. What might you be doing on your show soon that has to do with trivia? and what show am I referring to and where can we learn about
Starting point is 00:24:59 all of this on Twitter? That's called a toss, ladies and gentlemen. That's how to do it. And this is called an evil laugh. So you can follow me personally on Twitter at Stimpy JD and you can follow my show at L0 underscore Ducks and what the hell is you talking about?
Starting point is 00:25:18 Yeah, I'm bringing back Hockey Jeopardy with three baseball hosts. Is this for real? It's for real. Yeah. I'm doing three baseball hosts. Are you now? Trivia. Yeah. Oh, wow. I didn't know that. I thought we were just playing Jeopardy.
Starting point is 00:25:34 So do yourself a favor. Sorry. Watch The Mighty Ducks film. You have it now. Yes, I do. You never know. I might just put you on a wild goose chase, make you watch the movie, and then it won't show up on the trivia. You know, if you did, that'd be really funny. Actually. It's a great movie. It's the Mighty Ducks.
Starting point is 00:25:52 It's fantastic. But, yeah, Hockey Jeopardy is coming back. Back. Yeah. Yeah. You're not quite sure what day of the week that's going to air, though, are you? Not yet. Okay. Yeah, I didn't think so. But do look for it this week, ladies and gentlemen,
Starting point is 00:26:05 because yours truly is going to make an ass of himself on Hockey Jeopardy, on Locked on Anaheim Ducks, and I will be playing against to be announced. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Little tease there. Yes. Did you say Stimpy J.D yet at Twitter? At Stimpy J.D.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Speaking of Nickelodeon. Yes. Yes. What else can they... Oh, and they can also find all of our wonderful podcasts on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher Radio, Smoke Signal, or wherever you listen to your podcasts. Don't actually use Smoke Signal, please. Smokey Bear will come out and clock you.
Starting point is 00:26:48 Yes. Is anything else, Jason, before we go? Smoky Bear will treat your head like a 400, But home run. Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do it. Also, thank you for making my outro a little bit shorter since you named all the podcasting apps. However, ladies and gentlemen, next time on Locked-on Mariners, I will be joined by guest panelists, Irene Lorenzo, Elmo, and a tossed salad. So you don't want to miss that one.
Starting point is 00:27:16 So download rate and subscribe to this program so you don't miss that or any other episode on any of the podcasting platforms that J.D. mentioned. Follow this program on Twitter at L.O. underscore Mariners and follow me on Twitter at D.C. underscore Lundberg. Opening day in Houston is Friday, ladies and gentlemen.
