Episode Date: June 1, 2023The Yankees scored 20 runs in the first two games of this series, with 15 of those coming against Bryce Miller and Logan Gilbert, but George Kirby kept them at that number with eight dominant, scorele...ss innings of work in a brilliant bounceback performance following his rough outing against the Pirates last Friday. Ty goes over the numbers on Kirby's night, then discusses Cal Raleigh's walkoff single, J.P. Crawford's play of the year contender, and Scott Servais' smartest in-game move in a while on tonight's postgame edition of Locked On Mariners.Help us out by filling out our survey!Be sure to follow or subscribe to Locked On Mariners wherever you prefer your podcasts! pitching in defense. That's how the Marriers want to win.
I'd prefer they score a few more runs than they did tonight.
But hey, you know what? We'll take it.
What do you say?
One last show for the month of May.
Let's do it.

I am your host, Tadine Gazzalas.
It is Wednesday, May 31st, 2023, and your Seattle Marrists folks have walked off
the New York Yankees won a nothing to salvage a game from a series that really couldn't
have started any worse than it did.
The Yankees scored 20 runs of the first two games of the series, but, you know,
you know what, that's all they walked away from the series with because George Kirby and the
rest of the Smaris pitching staff shoved tonight, eight scoreless innings for Kirby.
We're also going to talk about Paul Seawald's inning because something pretty interesting
happened during that frame. We're also going to talk about Justin Topa's inning. That was a really
good one to keep the Yankees off the board in the top of the 10th after an unfortunate J.P. Crawford
error. But hey, before that, JP had a really nice game defensively had arguably the play of
the year so far for the Mariners. Julio Rodriguez also flashing the leather in this one. We're also
going to talk about Cal Raleigh, obviously. He walked this thing off. He was the hero in this
one. So let's do all of it. Let's start with the man of the hour, though. George Curry
bounces back in a big way from arguably his worst.
second worst start of his young
major league career last Friday against
the pirates. He was
flat out, dominant
tonight, eight scoreless endings
as I mentioned, just three hits
allowed, seven strikeouts,
no walks, as per usual,
with a George Kirby start.
He was feeling really
freaking good tonight. I got
to tell you, 1.7
miles per hour up from his
season average on his fastball velocity.
He reached 99
miles per hour for the first time in his major league career tonight on that sinker.
The sinker and the four seamer both eight, 34% called strike plus whiff rate on the fastball,
on the foursamer rather, and then 45% call strike plus whiff rate on the sinker.
Just nasty stuff from Kirby all night.
And if it wasn't for a couple of innings where there were some elongated bats,
he may have very well gone the distance,
but you know what?
That may not have mattered because the Mariners,
unfortunately, were not able to score any runs
until we reached extras.
It was not a good night for this Mariners offense
against Clark Schmidt and the Yankees.
They only muster five hits,
including that last one from Raleigh,
which sealed the deal.
He didn't waste any time.
He stepped up in the box,
worked himself into a two-two count.
Jose Caballero,
pinch running for.
for a.
U hitting of Suarez as the automatic runner to start at the bottom of the 10th.
And then Raleigh drove one to right field to score Caballero.
And that is your ballgame Mariners improved to 29 and 27 on the year.
So they stay above 500 by two games heading into a much needed off day
before they hit the road for an eight game road trip.
They finish this homestand seven and three.
So despite the three,
blowout losses in five games.
The mayor has had a very, very successful homestand overall.
Just wish that the first two games of the series went a little bit better than they did.
But nevertheless, they finished this thing out on a high note and should feel pretty good about
themselves before they make their way down to Arlington for a very important three game series
with the Texas Rangers this weekend.
So yeah, Kirby, fantastic tonight.
that was huge for him just mentally after just a brutal start against the pirates and to do it against this lineup and the way that he handled Aaron Judge who finished tonight O for three and he did walk but that was an intentional walk which was in my mind the smartest in game move we've seen from Scott's service in at least a while I want to talk about that more in just a moment but first

colby of course working tonight so not able to join me for this one uh but uh yeah uh you can catch
the Mariners and the Rangers
when that series gets going on the Mariners
hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via
the SXM app.
I knew I was forgetting something to mention, so
there you go.
All right, so Scott Service,
pretty good night for him.
And really because
of what he did in the top of the ninth
of this game. So Paul Seawald
comes of the game. George Kirby
went 95 pitches
through his eight scoreless ending.
So it was time for him.
to shut it down tonight.
They go to Seawald, and he gets the first two outs,
and Aaron Judge steps to the plate.
No one on, but it's Aaron Judge.
He already has three home runs in the series.
He has just flat out dominated the series,
and once the wing of the bat could basically put the nail in the Mariners' coffin.
And what does Scott Service do?
He doesn't allow Seawall to throw a pitch to him.
He tells CB Buckner, hey, we're walking, Judge.
Send Judge to first base because we want to go after Willie Calhoun.
And that is the smartest thing I've seen service do in game in a really long time because I'll tell you what.
I would rather face Willie Calhoun with a runner on first if I just need one out than Aaron Judge with nobody on base.
Any day of the week.
Any freaking day of the week.
That is a brilliant move by service and it panned out as Calhoun flies out soft.
to Jerry Kellnick in left field.
Beautiful, beautiful decision.
Justin Topa,
really big moment for him in this one.
Very Taylor-Sossado-esque moment for Topa.
It's kind of been a running theme with these two extra innings wins here
for the Mariners over the last few days.
Big extra innings pitching performances from one of their relievers.
Topa is the guy in this one.
He induces a soft ground ball to James.
JP Crawford to start this off and Crawford
seemed to have an easy play to potentially throw out
the automatic runner at third, but took his eye off the ball
a little bit and ended up bubbling it and everyone was safe.
And it's like, oh man, here we go.
Right.
Isaiah Counter-Flefa steps into the box and he had a
in a bat earlier on in this game where he drove the ball
deep to center field, which could have scored
go-ahead run, but
Julio Rodriguez with a beautiful
running grab towards the
wall leaping grab to end that
threat. Again, he steps in the
box and Topa gets them to pop
out to
to Ehio Horez.
Then he walks Jake Bowers, who was
just, of course, a thorn
in the Mariners side, former Mariner,
despite entering the series with a
70 WRC plus.
Bowers walks, and then
Anthony Volpe
steps up to the plate
and Topa gets him
to ground out to Suarez
with the bases loaded Suarez
throws home which is an incredibly difficult play
that Swares made look
really really easy
to get the force out at home
and there you go
two outs. Franchi Cordero
now pinch hits
for I believe
I'm going to look it up for Kyle
Higashioka. That's right
Cordero
pinch hits for Agashi Okina of course
Cordero last year when he was a member of the Boston Red Sox
walked the Mariners off with a grand slam
so bases loaded extra innings
Franchi Cordero's up to the plate
got to feel a little nervous even though that Cordero
is not a particularly good hitter and
he battled with Topa and Topa battled right back with him
but Topa got the last laugh
and you know what
I didn't see it
because MLBTV
I don't know how many of you have it
but MLBTV loves to do this thing
at midnight in your time zone
where it will just kick you out of the game
that you're watching because it refreshes the homepage
with all the games for that day that it turned to.
So I'm sweating it out
and I tune back into the game
and you know what I see Justin Toba
popping off on the mound as he should
with a big strikeout of Cordero to end the threat,
keep the Yankees off the board, which was huge.
Because again, this Marin's offense was not generating any sort of threat, really.
I mean, they were able to get a couple guys in scoring position over the course of the night,
but they just couldn't do jack squat with it.
So thank you, Cal Raleigh, for breaking the ice
and for allowing me to get to bed at a reasonable time.
though I did want to do a post-game show here with you guys.
Lastly, let's talk about, you know, J.P. Crawford's big play,
arguably the play of the year for the Mariners.
Glaber Torres with a runner in scoring position,
could have made this game one-nothing.
And again, considering the way that the Mariners' bats performed in this one,
they weren't able to score until we got an extra inning, an additional inning.
They may have lost the game on this swing of the bat from Glaber Torres,
106 miles per hour off the bat
and J.P. Crawford with the
Michael Jordan Space Jam
stretch of the arm somehow
making the grab.
You know, we're doing this thing where
we're going to act as the unofficial
official campaign managers
for a Mariners position player who
is probably going to have a bit of a hard time
trying to make it to the All-Star game.
And we gave you three options. We gave you Cal Raleigh.
We gave you Jerry Kellnick. We gave you JP Crawford.
And we put a poll up on Twitter.
And Jared Kellnick is running away with it.
Deservedly so.
But I'm telling you, JP Crawford's having a really, really good year.
Obviously what he's doing at the plate is great and all that.
But defensively speaking, he's having one of his best years.
He should definitely be up there for gold glove consideration
when this thing is all sudden done with the way that he's playing
because it's just, I mean, he's just playing out of his mind right now.
That play against Torres tonight nasty, just nasty.
stuff. That was awesome. That has to be top five on SportsCenter, top one, really, if we're being
honest. All right. So I think that covers pretty much everything. Appreciate you coming through here,
allowing me to chat your ear off a little bit about this game tonight. I was pretty pumped about it.
A fun game. Again, obviously would like to see the Mariners score a few more runs than just
one. But one was enough to get the job done. And the Mariners, again, improved to 29.
and 27 on the year.
They'll enjoy the off day tomorrow.
We got a mailbag coming your way tomorrow.
So again, get your questions in on Twitter.
And once the Mariners get back to action,
down in Arlington against the Texas Rangers,
you can catch all the action on the mayor's hometown broadcast
with Sirius XMV, the SXM app.
