They walk off the Angels last night after blowing a four-nethin-lead. They also blew multiple opportunities to end the game earlier than that. Sound familiar? But in the end, Harry Ford walks it off in his first career played appearance at Team Mobile Park,
Starting point is 00:01:09 which is pretty darn cool. So we'll talk about that. We'll talk about Josh Naylor's shoulder stuff. We'll talk about the weirdness. That was Bryce Miller's start. We'll talk about this bullpen. And we'll obviously get you set to scoreboard watch as per usual as well. But last night in the 12th inning,
Starting point is 00:01:31 Harry Ford, the last man on the bench for Dan Wilson. comes in in the pitcher spot because the mare is forfeited the DH last night. After Pennchheading Mitch Garver for Cole Young, they needed a second baseman. So they pulled Jorge Polanco out of the DH and played him at second. So Harry comes in here and a little bit of a risky move by Dan Wilson because Castillo was the last pitcher in that mare's bullpen who either had not thrown a ton of pitches the night before or had not. gone back to back the last two games. So what would the plan have been had the mirrors not come through there?
Starting point is 00:02:14 Very low odds that they wouldn't have come through there, but also it's the merrier. So who knows? But it was bases loaded, nobody out. Who knows? Who cares? We didn't have to find out because Harry gets the first pitch he sees, change up down the heart of the plate, and drives it deep enough into right field to score Jorge Polanco and win this game for the Marrars, which it kind of.
Starting point is 00:02:35 It accomplishes a lot in the standings. Not only did it catapult the Mariners into a first place tie with the Houston Astros atop the AOS, but it also pushed the Rangers back to three games back of the Marys. It says two back on the standings, but it's three back because of the tiebreaker. It also pushed the Royals to five back of the Mariners and the Wild Card standings, which is huge,
Starting point is 00:02:59 especially with that series down in Coffman Stadium looming. So some good stuff there. by the marries. And again, the magic number now down to 13. So yeah, journey, not great. Destination, what you ultimately wanted. So let's get into it. Colby, thoughts on the game last night. That was a stupid game. And it was only fun for like one minute. But it was a really fun minute. I mean, it was fun in the second inning. Yeah, sure. Okay. But that felt like it was like 10 hours after the game ended or before the game ended. So you kind of forget about it. Um, it's just this team, man, this team. Uh, I just, I don't, we're 100 and, what are we?
Starting point is 00:03:44 A hundred and, uh, 447 games into this thing. And I still have no idea who this team is. 147 games in. I'm like, I don't know. Are they good? Are they bad? Are they just mediocre? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:04:00 I don't know. That's weird. 147 games into a season. Yeah. Yeah. It's also kind of fun. It's also kind of fun. Not going to lie.
Starting point is 00:04:11 So, yeah, it was a... The fact that you don't know what their ceiling is or their floor. No idea. They could lose six in a row, and I wouldn't be shocked at all. Yeah. Makes them kind of dangerous in October. In a multitude of ways. Makes them very dangerous for my health as well.
Starting point is 00:04:30 Dangerous to me emotionally, but also dangerous to the rest of the American League and the rest of Major League Baseball. I don't know. this uh again this team man it is it is uh a group that i love to hate and i hate to love and all of that and it is uh it is a it is a i'm not i'm not capable of accurate accurately describing this team with the limitations placed upon me on this network so yeah anyways go mariner six in a row all right yeah let's go for seven tonight let's do it Josh Naylor, unfortunately, reaggregated his shoulder. This is just something that, you know, there's going to be good days.
Starting point is 00:05:16 There's going to be bad days with it. And last night was a bad day. I'm going to assume that he's not going to be in the lineup tonight. I'd keep an eye out for Jorge Polanco making his first start at first base tonight. I would also add on to something that I said yesterday here. Again, I would send Cole Young down to AAA while they're still playing games down. there, which lines up perfectly for him to be recalled. And, you know, about 10 days, they have 10 games left or nine games left, I think,
Starting point is 00:05:45 at this point, but nine games and 10 days. I'd send him down. I'd call it Ben Williamson to have him play third base just in case I need Gino to go over there and play first. Yep. So, yeah. And then, you know, with Cole, just, you know, you make it clear to him. Like, hey, like, we're not going to start you a bunch over the next week or so.
Starting point is 00:06:06 so we want to give you some reps. We're going to send you down. And then we're going to call you back up after the season is over down in the PCL. Yeah. You got to play the hot hand right now. Leo Rivas does so much more to help you win games. Yeah. You know, it's unfortunate,
Starting point is 00:06:25 but we'd rather you get reps and sit up here and rot on the bench like, you know, like we're doing to Harry right now. You don't want to be Harry, do you? So. Yeah, let Harry cook, please. Just give him one start. Can you give him one start? Give him one start.
Starting point is 00:06:39 That's all I'm asking for is just one start from Harry Ford. How about the day after he won you the baseball game? You had no business winning and or losing. How about you give him a start then? Or at the very least, can you give him a start on Saturday when they're literally facing a AAA call up? Like a PCL, like nobody? Like can you at least give him that start then on Saturday, if not tonight? I just feel like the first start he's going to get is when they roll out their hangover lineup.
Starting point is 00:07:05 I mean, we'll see if they even get to use a hangover lineup. Sure, but assuming that they do, I kind of feel like that's the time that Harry gets his first start. I just, it's going to feed families when Harry goes two for four in his first actual start with a home run and a double. People were, oh, well, you know, we couldn't get Mitch Carver out of the lineup. So, yeah, anyways. He came through last night. He did something that, you know, a couple other mirrors couldn't deal last night. just saying sure i mean garber will be in the lineup tonight with cacucci on the mound
Starting point is 00:07:41 might be a good night you just give cow a day off and i mean a real one not not not a d h day you can always use cow later in the game tonight if you need to but we'll see how the lineup looks there are a couple different uh interesting things to uh to keep an eye on all right so we're going to talk about uh bryce miller we're going to talk about this bullpen which had another really strong outing in just a moment but first a reminder this episode of the lockdown there's podcast is brought to you by Nutraful. You've probably seen a million ads for hair growth products and thought, yeah, sure, like that actually works.
Starting point is 00:08:17 And I don't blame you because there are so many products out there. And it is so hard to know which ones are actually going to do anything. That's why you should give Nutriful a closer look. Neutroful is the number one dermatologist's recommended hair growth supplement brand, trusted by over one and a half million people. Be sure to tune in to the Marriss Postcast with Anderson-Herson, Christopher Crawford, available on both the Lockdown Merrittors YouTube and podcast feeds. All right. So let's talk a little bit about Bryce Miller, who started out hot. Fastball was looking good. Command was in a really nice spot.
Starting point is 00:09:33 He ends up getting 21 whiffs in this game. He struck out 11. He didn't walk anyone. Only give up six hits. Problem is, he blew a 4-0-0 lead. And the VLO started to drop. Command started to fade.
Starting point is 00:09:54 He only ends up going five and two-thirds on this one. So a mixed bag. Some good. Some really impressive stuff in here, but also a lot of the stuff that we've seen on our Bryce Miller this year. Yeah. I mean,
Starting point is 00:10:11 some of us noticed it before others. But yeah, you could tell that the Velo was, was dipping a little bit. There was like a 93 mixed in there and what, the third or the fourth inning. And you're like, yeah.
Starting point is 00:10:22 And then it was 94s and then 95. Like, and then just kind of started sitting 94 and, uh, 94 93. And so, you know, it is kind of a tough night to judge,
Starting point is 00:10:34 uh, Bryce for because, you know, 11 strikeouts and no walks. incredible. Especially, he didn't even go six innings, and he's still got 11 strikeouts and no walks. That's awesome.
Starting point is 00:10:46 Four runs against this lineup. No Joe Adele. No Logan, no Hoppe. You're spotted a 4-0 lead. You gave it back pretty quickly. You weren't able to go 6. Now, 5 and 2-thirds is pretty close to 6. And obviously, if the game didn't go 12,
Starting point is 00:11:07 then Bryce did his job, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah. So it's just kind of a weird outing because I wouldn't call Bryce Miller's outing good. I don't think you can. He gave up four runs. Yeah. You know, but he had 11 strikeouts. He had no walks. The fastball in the first, you know, couple of innings was elite. And it's funny, you look at the numbers.
Starting point is 00:11:25 And he had a 40% whiff rate on his forcing fastball. To put that in perspective, 30% is elite. That is an elite whiff rate on a forcing fastball. Bryce's was 40 last night. He also had a 50% whiff rate on the splitter. And those are pretty much the only two pitches he threw last night. It was just, you know, it was 56 fastballs and 28 splitters, and he threw 99 pitches. So you guys can do the percentages.
Starting point is 00:11:53 And then it was just a handful of curveballs, a handful of two seamers. So it was a very simplified game plan. He was going right after guys with the fastball. And then he was going to go with the splitter. It was fastball up, splitter down. And that was pretty much the game plan. And it worked for the most. part. It worked in getting strikeouts. It worked in getting, you know, whiffs. It didn't necessarily
Starting point is 00:12:15 work with guys on base. So just kind of a very weird night for Bryce. Again, the Velo drop to the point now where it's not even that concerning, you just kind of expect it. Like, that is what's going to happen with Bryce Miller. And like, I guess the best way to look at it is like, man, if the Mariners can make it to the playoffs, Bryce Miller coming out of the bullpen for two innings, at a time. If he can sit 97 with that splitter, that's a high leverage dominant relief arm that you've added to your bullpen. Unfortunately, you know, he still has to make three more starts, maybe four, kind of
Starting point is 00:12:54 depends on how the rotation breaks. Three, I think three. I think three. But he might be in line to start one of those last two games, which would give him an extra start. But whatever, whatever, right? Three or four more starts. And he just, you can't really trust him.
Starting point is 00:13:08 But you also don't have. have a better option. So just a very weird, like Bryce Miller's start was very much in line with the Mariners game last night. Just a very weird kind of tough to judge, uh, game from Bryce. And, you know, there was certainly some positives, uh, to come away with it, but there were also a lot of negative. So it's just kind of a weird start for him. And it's, I guess I would say it's more positive than negative because the stuff looks so good and, and he didn't walk anybody. I mean, the command wasn't great, but the control was. He threw plenty of strike. it's just you know the four things the command was pretty good in the first couple of it's like
Starting point is 00:13:44 he was yes the first two innings were was the best we've seen bryce miller look and it wasn't even close that was like that was bryce miller right that was back for for two innings he was back and then right and then the third and the fourth no and he was okay in the fifth and okay in the last inning but like yeah the first two innings were that's as good as any mariner pitcher has looked year. So unfortunately, the other three and two thirds counts just as much as those first two. So it's kind of a weird, weird night for Bryce. And, you know, I think you can really, if you want to look at it, it is very encouraging. You can. If you want to look at it from a pessimistic viewpoint, you certainly can as well. There's a lot to like here. There's a lot to be concerned about. So just a weird, weird night
Starting point is 00:14:32 for Bryce Miller. So a lot was asked of the bullpen again, because they had to go into extra. is the bullpen had to cover six and a third and this one after covering eight and a third the night before and what five and a third the night before that Bizarro pitches Brash pitches Vargas pitches Munoz pitches Jackson pitches
Starting point is 00:14:54 and Castillo pitches they combined to only surrender five hard hit balls and the only runs that they gave up or the you know to automatic runners so yeah pretty really good night for the bullpen again not as good as the night before. I mean, I don't think
Starting point is 00:15:13 a bullpen performance that the Marys will have in quite some time, not just this year. We'll be able to match what they did the night before. But still really good. And, you know, still getting contributions. I mean, look, Luke Jackson and Jose Castillo each face the top of the Angels lineup in this one. And the Marys somehow won this game.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Crazy. Crazy. So, yeah. But the issue with this now is you still have to play three more games in the series before you get another off day. So who's going to be available tonight? That's a big question. And are they going to have to go and get a fresh arm or two from Tacoma? Yeah. By the time that you're watching this, if they've made a roster move, it's probably been made by now. My guess would be Michael Fulmer if they do make a move or Nick Anderson. but that also means DFA in someone that has helped you over the last couple of days, which sucks. Because they're not going to send down Emerson Hancock, who has options.
Starting point is 00:16:23 They're not going to send down Matt Brash. But Hancock's available tonight. So I don't think they would send, you know, the guy down. We think the guy that's available down, you know, one of the few guys that's seemingly available. So, Colby, I think you're going to have to pitch for the Maris tonight. How are you getting Mike Trout out? What's your plan? With ease.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Throw the first one behind him, watch and throw his little fit, then just strike him out with cutters, you know, with my 73-mile-an-hour cutter, up and in, maybe. So, yeah, note here from a friend of the show, Gary Hill,
Starting point is 00:16:59 who does not follow me on Twitter. Mariners bullpen during the six-game win streak. No earned runs allowed, 29 innings, five walks, 28 strikeouts, just one extra base hit allowed. Big, you know, the heavy lifting of that has come in the last two nights as well. And you've had to use the Luke Jackson's and you've had to use the Jose Castillo's. And they perform well considering. I mean, like, look, neither of those guys are high leverage dudes who you just can't afford to lose, but they've performed well.
Starting point is 00:17:38 You don't win those games without those guys. And unfortunately, you're probably going to have to DFA one or two of them. You have to make a room on the 40 man. Your 40 man is full. You have to make room on your 28 man roster because your 28 man is full. And the only two guys with options in this Mariners bullpen
Starting point is 00:17:55 are Brash and Hancock. And you can't send down a position player for a pitcher either. You're at the maxed out on the pitchers. So you can't just send down Harry Ford for an arm. that it's just not a thing so you can't do the cool young thing like i said unfortunately because of just you know the way the last you had back-to-back games like this uh this is this is the downside yes you won both of them that's awesome uh certainly better that you won both of them than you lost one or two of them yeah but because of it you're going to have to make a tough
Starting point is 00:18:30 decision roster wise i really don't i mean i was a little surprised they didn't make a move yesterday to get a fresh arm, especially since it seems like Hancock wasn't available. They really didn't want to use Hancock. So I'm surprised they didn't just send him down for a fresh arm. But I find it hard to imagine they're not going to have to make a roster move today to get a fresh arm. And it just stinks because, yeah, Castillo or Jackson, one of them is going to have to be DFA. I really don't see any other way to make that work because you know, it's sending down a starter because then they have to miss their next start. It just, you're stuck.
Starting point is 00:19:07 And the only way that you can add a fresh arm is you're going to have to DFA somebody or put somebody on like the Phantom IL. And that's also not good. Like there are no good, easy options here. So unfortunately, you know, thanks for the service, Luke or Jose. One of you is going out on the waiver wire and we hope you clear. But yeah, I don't see a way around it unless they really want to risk, you know, going into tonight's game with another short-handed bullpen,
Starting point is 00:19:36 which they might, but it does seem like they're going to have to make a move, and that unfortunately is going to have to come at the expense of Jackson or Castillo. So Bizarro threw 14 pitches last night, but tonight would be his fourth outing in five games. They've used the hell out of him, so that probably is on the table for them. Brash, I can't imagine,
Starting point is 00:20:02 is going to be available after throwing 23 pitches last night. Vargas has gone back to back days, but he also only threw eight pitches last night. So maybe he's available to go back to back to back. And he has gone back to back to back this year before. Mooney only through 11, but this would also be his fourth. Yeah. So Spire is going to be available, you think?
Starting point is 00:20:30 Forgis, just go just sick. Yeah. Yeah, just going off of workload, right? Ferguson, Spire, maybe Bizarro, maybe Munoz, Hancock. Probably not Munoz or Vizardo, but maybe, like you said, Vargas, probably, right? Still. Sure, yeah. So, so it was that Spire, Ferguson, Vargas, Hancock.
Starting point is 00:20:54 We feel pretty confident are available today. Yeah. And everybody else is, I mean, Jackson, probably, they didn't want to use Jackson yesterday. So, I mean, Jackson's it down today. Brash is going to be down today. And then it's Munoz Pizarro maybe, maybe, but probably not. So, yeah, you might have four arms in your bullpen. In other words, you need Luis Castillo to go at least six tonight.
Starting point is 00:21:24 Yeah. And maybe even seven. And you need your offense to not, you know, to not let a bad team hang around. for the fifth consecutive night. All right. So we're going to tell you what to watch for on the out of town scoreboard coming up here in just a moment. But first a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Airs podcast is brought to you once again by Fandul. Starting point is 00:22:22 And you're listening to the Lockdown Merritt's podcast. So let's talk about what to watch for on the out of town scoreboard tonight. The Marra's magic number can go down to 11. they would need to obviously win and they would also need a rangers loss to the Mets you know one of those things would get it down to 12 both of those things would get it down to 11 so we'll see
Starting point is 00:22:46 the royals again who are five back now and have a couple of teams to leapfrog to even get behind you again they are starting a series of Philadelphia it's possible the the royals can be completely out of this thing by the end of this week again. Sure. One might argue that they're already completely out of this thing.
Starting point is 00:23:07 Five back, have to leapfrog a couple teams. Obviously, they still play you, but it's a lot at this point in the year. Sure, but that is kind of their one saving grace is that they do have three against the team that is leading. So, but yeah, Philadelphia, their magic number is five to clinch the division after they swept the Mets. So they have plenty to play for as well. and they're playing good ball right now. So, yeah, not a great matchup for Kansas City. And then, you know, Texas, they swept the Brewers.
Starting point is 00:23:42 So who cares who they're playing? They're playing really good ball right now. So certainly not an easy series, but we would have said the same about the Brewers and they swept them. So kind of tough to bet against Texas right now. But, yeah, obviously go Mets, go Phillies. Yep. And go. Who are the Astros playing?
Starting point is 00:24:01 White Sox are playing the Guardians. So go White Sox and then go Braves against the Astros. All you can do is just keep winning games. I mean, you took game one. It's now a three game series. Went two out of three. If you went two out of three, you know, it doesn't really matter what Houston does.
Starting point is 00:24:20 You had a good weekend. You had a great homestand. And you get to that off day. And you get to kind of recharge a little bit before you start. the most the most important road trip in Mariners regular season history
Starting point is 00:24:35 will start on Tuesday it is because it's the next one Ty sure it is because it's the next one it is way more important than any other regular season road trip that has ever happened because they've already happened you can't change them
Starting point is 00:24:50 this one hasn't happened yet that makes it the most important so okay all right we'll see and it all wraps up that road trip with a big Sunday night baseball game on ESPN. So. Yeah. Opportunity. Opportunities to knocking.
Starting point is 00:25:06 We'll see if they can take advantage. And it's like cool. They tie the Astros for first place. Awesome. Seeing it before. Saw it in 2023. Saw it at times last year. Saw it at one point this year.
Starting point is 00:25:19 A tie. This is the latest in the season. They've been tied for first place since 2001. Yeah. Let's finish the job this time. Let's finish the job, but also how sad is it that this is the latest in a season of Mariners team has been tied or in first place in the division since 2001? Yeah, so finish the job. It's time.
Starting point is 00:25:42 It's time. So just keep winning games. And by the way, if the Mariners, Rangers and Astros all wind up in a three-way tie, the Mariners would have the advantage. So keep that in mind. the only way that they wouldn't have the advantage is if the Astros swept them and the Rangers and they're not going to wind up in a three-way tie if that happens. So who cares? Right. I think even then you'd have to lose this series to the Angels. Or is it just the three teams that played? Yeah, it's just had a head record. Yeah. So the
Starting point is 00:26:16 the mayors right now are 15 and 8 against the Rangers and the Astros combined. So the worst they do is 15 and 11. Yeah, and the Astros and the Rangers are both sub 500. Okay. Well, that is going to do it for us. Thank you so much for joining us here on the Lockdown Marys podcast. For Colby Peddode, I'm Tedding Gazzal.
