Colby, before the mayors went on this road trip,
we talked a little bit about the lineup because we were expecting both J.P.
Crawford, Dom Canzone to get back.
Got Canzone back when we thought we were going to,
but J.P's return got delayed a little bit because of that hit by pitch in Tacoma.
But we saw him return last night.
he was activated and then pinch hit late in that comeback win against the Yankees.
So I do that J.P. is going to be in the lineup tonight.
He probably is by the time that you're watching this.
We're recording this around 11.
It's 1157 Pacific time right now.
So lineups probably out by the time you're watching this.
I think Jorge Polanco will be in the lineup.
But I've also thought that the last couple of games as well,
because apparently he's been available off of the bench,
especially last night,
Scott Service had said that he was available off the bench.
We didn't see him.
But I would assume,
I mean,
it's been,
what,
seven,
eight days since he suffered that hamstring injury.
So assuming that everyone's healthy and ready to go now,
how do you think they're going to deploy this lineup?
I would assume that they're going to slot JP back into the leadoff spot,
simply because Rojas is like two for his last,
30. So the, you know, the wheels on Rojas, you know, are starting to fall off. And that's to be
expected. We knew he wasn't going to hit 370. So I think, you know, JP comes back at a pretty good
time. So I imagine it will be JP Julio still hitting one and two like they originally planned.
And then that's where things get a bit sticky, right? I would think Cal Raleigh probably is going
to hit three tonight. Personally, it probably should be Luke Rayleigh. But if you want to hit
Luke Rayleigh 4 and Raleigh 3, that's fine.
I think I'd rather have Cal hit 4 just to, you know,
Rayleigh's more likely to get on base.
So I'd probably go Rayleigh and then Cal,
but I think it'll be Cal and then Rayleigh.
And then, you know, things get even nicer,
who hits 5.
Could be Polanco, particularly against a right-handed pitcher.
Could be Polanco.
Could be, I mean, if he's in the lineup, Hanigur,
although I don't think he will be against most righties anymore.
So I think Polanco probably hits five.
And then six, you know, are you going Rojas hitting six?
Maybe that might be a pretty good idea.
You know, it takes some of the pressure off.
And he's still one of your better hitters despite, you know, being in a slump right now.
So him hitting sixth.
And then you go, you know, probably Canzone or France, Canzone, 7, 8.
and then, you know, where's Garber hitting or whoever, D.Hing?
Like, you make a pretty compelling point right now that Garber or Hanager, whoever the DHS, should probably be hitting nine.
Like, there have been your worst hitters.
Although Hanager has been hitting better as of late.
So, you know, one through four right now seems pretty easy.
You know, I think we know that it's going to be, you know, JP, Julio, Cal, and Rayleigh.
but after that, you know, could be Polanco.
Could be because they like to do left, right, left, right.
Polanco's a switch hitter, so that still works.
But it could be that's where they hit Hanager,
who's been better over the last week or so.
That's probably what I would guess,
Hanager deaching.
But, you know, that's against a right,
against the lefty. Garber and Hanigar will both be in there.
And the lineup will probably look pretty different
with the lefty on the mound.
Do you think they might send Rojas back down to nine
just for wrap-around purposes?
they might
I just
do you really want Rojas hitting nine
when six through eight
five through eight even is
such a
I don't have a nice word for it
so question mark
it's such a problem
sure
I don't know
I don't know if they do that
plus I think you're going to hit
like if you want the wraparound factor
like you could put Canzone
nine
there's some actual speed there
and there's some on base skills
some contact skills too.
So yeah, I mean, they could.
There's a lot of ways they could go.
But, you know, I don't see them putting,
it's hard for me to imagine that they're going to put Garber,
Hanager, Polanco hitting ninth because veterans and, you know,
blah, blah, blah.
And they've been there before like that.
All that stuff really matters.
So my guess is that hitting nine was going to end up being either Canzon or Rojas,
I guess, even though Rojas is also a veteran.
He's been there before, but whatever.
He's only making $3 million this year.
So we have to make the lineup as money goes.
So, yeah, and it's obviously, it's not going to be Ty France.
You don't even want Ty France hitting nine because he's a terrible wraparound hitter because he's,
you know, the slowest guy in history.
So, yeah.
And then, yeah, against lefties, it'll be, I think it'll be somewhat significantly different.
Like, I don't know if JP gets the.
start against Nestor Cortez.
Like that could be Dylan Moore.
Yeah.
You could go, uh, Demo.
I mean,
well,
Demo could play third base or shortstop.
Mm-hmm.
Against lefties,
uh,
either one.
It kind of depends on how you feel about Eureas's bat right now.
So,
uh,
yeah,
the lefties will be interesting.
Garber will,
Garber and Hanager will both be in against any lefties starter,
which means can zone,
uh,
most likely canzone and Rayleigh find the bench,
but this is where tie France is kind of,
because you probably want France to play,
play against lefties. It's his best shot right now.
But you don't want to take Luke Rayleigh out of the lineup.
And how do you put Rayleigh, France, Hanniger, and Garber in the same lineup?
Right.
It's a little bit tough because there's only three spots.
So somebody has to sit down and, you know, it just, it's a little bit of a mess against
lefties, but because you're not, there's no way you're pinching Dillmore against
lefties right now.
Nope.
So probably in general, do you think we'll see Dillamore now?
because I mean he's been arguably one of your four best setters this year.
Right.
I think you'll seem quite a bit here early as they kind of try and work everybody back.
Because I think they want to try and ride the hot streak a little bit here.
One thing to totally, you know, keep in mind here is that Dillamore can play some first base too.
Like Ty France is just because Ty France and Luke Raleigh have played all the first base this year,
it doesn't mean they're the only guys that can.
And, you know, if you're against a tough writing, you don't think Thai France has a shot,
You think Dillamore gives you a better chance, but you don't want to take out Rojas,
you don't want to take out-jap, you don't want to take out your two-corner outfielders.
First base, like, go put Dillmore at first base.
It's not like Ty France has really earned, you know, a death grip on first base wraps.
Like other people are going to get them.
And Scott has said as much.
He said, you know, yeah, there's three guys.
There's the two Mitches and Ty, and they're kind of, you know, battling it out for some of these at-bats.
And so, yeah, you can't, you can't deny that Dillmore can certainly handle first base if you need them to.
So I think we're going to see Dillon quite a bit.
Probably not an everyday player like he's been for the last three weeks.
But I'd be pretty surprised for the next couple of weeks at least if Dillamore didn't make at least four or five starts every single week.
And regardless of lefty-riding matchups, I think they're going to try and ride that hot hand a little bit.
Yeah, he's been fantastic to start this year.
and especially on this road trip,
he's had a really, really good road trip,
had a big walk last night in the ninth inning as well.
Dimo's been massive for this team.
So yeah, you need to get him in the lineup
pretty much as much as you possibly can right now, I think.
Right.
One thing I would keep an eye on,
I don't think the Mariners are going to do it.
But I think they should strongly consider hitting Luke Riley leadoff.
I agree.
He's your best hitter right now.
You want him to get the most at-bats possible.
He's not, you know, clogging up the bases for Julio if Julio ever, you know, turns it on.
And like, he can score from first base on a double.
Like you're not slowing down Julio at all.
He's a lefty, uh, you know, who hits also hits lefties just fine, or at least has so far.
So I, I think you should consider that.
It's kind of like a few years ago.
And, uh, you know, one of my first declarations is that Mitch Hanager should hit lead off
right at Sotomo.com and the next day he was and he hit a lead off double.
And then the next I bet he hit a home run.
And it was like, yeah, he nailed.
it like i feel like luke raily is that guy now the only problem is if you hit luke raley leadoff
who's sitting in the middle of your lineup right like if you're if you're really trying to
maximize your lineup then i think luke raley's hitting first or second like i think that's
yeah without question uh really sitting first or second against right-handed pitching at the
very least because he's your best hitter right now at least in terms of average all that um he has
pop he has like the the traits of a traditional lead off hitter too like in terms of speed so if you're
into that kind of stuff he provides that as well um i think he's a really good fit for the lead off
spot i don't think they'll do that just yet but i think they might explore it eventually and i think
they should for sure because i think he is a really good fit for that right i think you know raley
i think raley should be getting an at bat in the first inning guaranteed to him yeah uh
Rayleigh is a guy right now who you should be getting to the plate as often as you can.
And we've already seen them move him up from eight to four in like the matter of a week.
And I mean, he's had what, like three, three hit games in the last?
I mean, two in a row.
Yeah.
But didn't he have one against the royals or was it a two head game?
Yeah, he might have.
Like, I think he's like 20 for his last 50.
So.
Yeah.
Yeah, it's time.
Like, look, if they want to.
keep him four. I'm not complaining, but I just think that you want to get this guy as many
at bats in a game as you possibly can. And that means sitting on first or second. Because right now
he's better than Julio. Right now he's better than Cala Rale. He's better than everybody on the team
right now. So put your best hitter in the one spot and guarantee him the most at bats of anybody on the
team until he slows down until he's not your best hitter anymore. Yeah. He had a three hit game
against the Royals as well.
So that's on this,
one, two, three, four, five, six,
seven game hitting streak that he's on.
Three of those games have been three hit games.
One of them,
a two hit game as well.
He's on a ridiculous run right now.
Take advantage of the hot streak before it goes away.
Because like we know with Josh Rojas,
Luke Rayleigh isn't a 330 hitter, right?
Like Luke Rayleigh is probably a 250 hitter at best.
And so take advantage of this while he can.
Yeah, I think even when he was at his best last year,
I think it was like 270, 280 average, like in the first half of last year when he was posting like a 170 WRC plus or whatever it was.
Plus he's not, he's still not really walking all that much, but the strikeouts have gone down significantly.
He's just finding a ton of grass right now.
Right.
The high BAPIP, but part of that is, you know, the Bunt singles and like the infield singles and the speed.
and that's part of kind of the fun thing about, you know,
Luke Raley is if he just puts the ball and play more,
his average will go up because he's fast.
Like he'll get some infield singles.
So, and that's what we're seeing right now.
Right.
All right.
So we got some injuries to catch up on here in just a moment.

So we have some injury news to catch up on here.
Let's start with Sam Haggertie,
who was recently sent down to make room for Dom Kanzone on the 26-man roster.
And in one of his first games back in Tacoma tore his Achilles.
So he is done for the year
And it might also impact his availability next year as well
So just brutal, brutal news for Sam Haggurty
Who of course is also going to be out of minor league options
This winter
So that potentially spells the end of his time
With the Mariners organization
So hoping for a speedy recovery for Sam
First and foremost, just want to say that
Sam really solid ball player who has helped the mayor is on multiple occasions and by all
account seems to be a great dude so uh you know best of uh best wishes to to sam and his recovery
and hoping that he's able to to make his way back wherever he ends up landing uh secondly you got
some minor league injury news colt emerson uh four to six weeks on a uh injured foot he fouled off a pitch
off of that foot has a small fracture in the foot.
That sucks. Obviously had the oblique injury that kept him out for about three weeks and now
it has this foot thing. Then Tai Peet also I believe it was a sprained ankle.
He is resuming baseball activity. So according to Justin Hollander and should be back
with Modesto pretty soon here, but still, yeah. So not,
Great injury news here for the Mariners right now, more so in the miners.
But we haven't really talked about the miners much on the show.
So I wanted to do that a little bit.
But Pete should be back soon.
Emerson will see.
And yeah, Hagridy done for the year.
So that sucks.
Any thoughts on those injuries, Colby?
No, you know, Emerson probably going to be back somewhere in July, which doesn't give
much time to get to high A this year. But, you know, he was playing well enough in A ball that they might
just, when he's active, they might just send him up to high A anyway. So, you know, it's not a huge deal
for Emerson. It's not like it. This is going to impact his timeline to the big leagues or anything
like that. He's still so far away from the big leagues that, you know, in terms of that,
long-term health and all that stuff, this really isn't a huge deal. It's just kind of a bummer, you know,
that we're not going to be able to track.
his progress.
And, you know, it might prevent him from getting up to the Northwest so that
Mariners fans can go and watch him in Everett.
So from that standpoint, it's a bummer.
Tai Pete, you know, I don't know if he was a safe bet to get to Everett at any point this
year anyways.
So get him healthy and then just continue to work on things.
You know, we know Pete is a freak athlete and we know that he has the ability.
And we've already seen this, by the way, in Modesta, where he just takes over games.
and like he's just the best player on the field.
So we know that Pete has that in him.
And so, you know, being extra cautious here and just kind of kind of slow playing him.
Like he's a young guy.
There's no reason to rush him.
And, you know, even if he has to repeat Modesto next year at the beginning just before they feel confident sending him into Everett, that's totally fine.
Like there's no reason to rush Ty Pete.
And this little injury is really, it's barely a footnote.
I mean, there's nothing that's going to prevent.
development from happening to an extent where it's going to, you know,
damage him long term or even his like trade value this summer.
That's what you're worried about.
So no, I don't think that these injuries really in the big picture, they don't matter,
but they do kind of suck.
Like obviously you want guys to be healthy, but also, you know, you want guys to,
it's fun to track these guys as they kind of move up in the big leagues or up in the
minor leagues on the way to the big leagues.
and you're just not going to get to do that with Colt Emerson for, you know, a month, a month,
a two months.
And that's a bummer because he is the best prospect in the system.
And I'm not sure it's particularly close at the moment.
Any other thoughts on the Maras miners miners while we're talking about it?
I mean, again, we haven't really talked about them on the show much.
We've talked about it a little bit on the Patreon show.
But any general thoughts, impressions, et cetera, of the Marys farm right now?
Yeah, Tacoma's been a little disappointing in that a lot of the fun role players that we thought that the mirrors were storing down there haven't really hit.
Samad Taylor hasn't hit a ton.
Cade Marlow hasn't hit a ton.
Ryan Bliss has really struggled.
So, you know, on that standpoint, there's some disappointing things going on.
Blake Hunt's been great and it does feel like they are getting him used to the very specific role of facing left-handed pitching because,
that's where like 90% of his at-bats have come from is against lefties in particular.
So they're very clearly trying to get him ready for that role.
And he might be ready for it.
Who knows?
But, you know, Seby's actually been hit the ball pretty hard recently.
And his at-bats have gotten better.
So I don't know if that moves on the horizon anytime soon.
But it might be.
You never know.
That's a move that they could certainly make at any point.
You know, down-in AA is probably where the most exciting thing is happening.
And that is Harry Ford, finding his power.
Ford is slugging, I think, over his last, you know, he started out like five for 45 or something like that.
And since that time, he's slugging almost like 600.
He's got 11 extra base hits.
And he's not, he's not striking out more or walking less to get to that power.
He's maintaining his high contact, high on base skills.
But he's getting to the power that the Mariners thought he had when they drafted him.
And now he's starting to look like this is a guy who,
could legitimately hit 20 home runs while running, you know, 250, 260 batting average.
And possibly, I mean, it's tough to say how this translate to the big leagues,
but based on how his career has progressed in the miners,
possibly nearing a 400 on base.
And I think you might be able to slug about 400 to 425, maybe 450 at the big league level,
based on what we're seeing.
So Harry Ford is by far the most positive development of the entire Mariners farm system,
individually speaking.
And yeah, he looks,
as far as I've heard and read,
he looks fine behind the plate.
Like he's a totally passable catcher.
This isn't where he's a disaster back there
and he can't play anywhere else.
So this isn't Jesus Montero.
So I think that's what you're looking at.
Yeah, since April 20th,
he is slashing 353.
Listen to this on base percentage.
491 with a 612 slug.
That's a 201 WRC plus.
so since 420 he's been smoking the ball absolutely blazing it not a ton of home runs though
just four home runs but lots lots of doubles and a couple triples so triple's uh yep he's nine doubles
two two triples four homers yeah so you know i i don't think i still don't think you're going to
see harry for it at any point this year uh in the mariner system or you know with the mariners i should
say. Like, I don't think he's a September call-up or anything like that. But could this, you know,
could this showing put him, you know, in line or give him the shot to win a job with the Big League
Club out of spring training next year? Possibly. I do think this makes it very likely that we're
going to see Harry Ford in Tacoma before the end of this year, which would be a big step for him.
And then I think, I don't think that the, I don't think the Mariners have kind of backed off of their
stance where they've just called guys up from double a straight away and they didn't feel like
AAA was a necessary step. It feels like they kind of backed off of that belief a little bit after
some failures. But you know, it's not like they've all failed. Kyle Lewis worked out totally fine
until he got her. Julio didn't need AAA. So Cal Raleigh did. So, you know, some of these guys
do need AAA. And I think they're going to, they're going to handle Ford like he needs AAA.
And they'll give him a good long run down there. So it's not impossible that we see Harry Ford at
some point this year. I would just say it's highly unlikely because there's still
defense that needs to be worked on. And then one other guy down in
AA that's you know obviously we've talked about him a little bit. Tyler Locklear
really hitting well in a in a bad hitters ballpark. Although the swing and miss has been
a problem for the last you know 10 days or so at least based on what I've heard
haven't gotten to watch a ton of AA Arkansas games. So yeah, his swing and miss is kind of
of an issue right now, but the other day he had two home runs and a double in a game.
So, you know, he's probably darn near ready for for a call up to AAA.
Like he's getting real close.
All right.
So we're going to get you ready for game two of the series between the Mariners and the Yankees
tonight in just a moment.

Game 2.
Brian Wu on the bump tonight.
And this is his second career start in Yankee Stadium.
And the first one went pretty well.
He went five and a third.
He struck out five, did walk three.
Only gave up two hits, though.
And kept the Yankees off of the board, most importantly.
So what are your expectations here for Wu in his third start of 2024?
How does he handle Juan Soto, Alex Redugo, Anthony Rizzo?
How does he handle the lefties in this lineup?
Those are my questions about Wu.
My expectations are,
I don't love this matchup for him in particular because of those big powerful lefties.
And I haven't seen anything, any new pitches, I should say, that would leave me to believe that
Wu can handle those guys consistently.
Now, there's always the command and control.
And in his first two starts, that's been really good.
So, you know, if he's living on the corners, if he's back during the two seamer and all that
stuff, like front door and whatever, like he can manage.
He can work around those guys a little bit.
but he has to dominate the righties he has to dominate volpe he has to dominate judge like he has to
keep those guys off the board so that he can kind of manage the lefties that are going to be in this
lineup so uh you know i'm a little bit concerned about you know woo facing this lineup right now
uh because again you know you look at it's really once sodo right at the end of the day
like one soto is the one man wrecking crew riszo's still pretty good and burdugo is like fine but
he had a good game last night but i'm
I'm concerned about the lefties.
I don't know how Wu handles those,
those guys in particular.
So I'm a little bit concerned about that.
But I think he's going to throw a lot of strikes, which is good.
That's what Mariners starters do.
We know how the Yankees are going to respond to that.
They're going to swing early.
They're going to be aggressive just like every team in baseball will be.
And so to me, how Wu handles the righties tells the story because like the lefties can do
damage on him.
But there's only three lefties in this lineup that are like truly terrifying.
And I mean, one is terrifying.
and the other two are fine.
So if you can dominate the righties like he has been,
then the lefties,
their threat is so,
it's minimized because there's only so much damage
that those three guys can do.
If you shut down Volpe,
if you shut down Torres,
if you shut down,
you know,
Stanton and then Judge,
like if you shut those guys down,
then you probably have a pretty good shot of,
you know,
pitching well in this game.
And, you know,
thankfully,
despite their struggles this time through the rotation,
or yeah, this cycle through the rotation,
they've all gotten pretty deep relative to how they actually pitched.
Like they've gone everybody except for,
I think Miller went six innings in this turn.
And Bryce still went five in a third.
So opens in pretty good shape.
So if Wu,
if Wu can only go four or five tonight,
not a huge deal.
But yeah,
I'm worried about the lefties.
And as weird as it is to say,
that means I'm watching how he handles the righties in this game.
because if you can keep them off the bases,
it limits the damage that the left-handed hitters can do.
But, you know, could Brian Wu just go in there and shove?
Sure, he's done it before.
Why not?
Yeah.
So, you know, my expectations are, like, I'm still in Will C mode about Brian Wu.
I don't have a great feel for him.
I think that's fair.
Yeah, he's only thrown like nine innings this year.
So we'll see.
Yep.
then Clark Schmidt taking the mound for the Yankees tonight
977Ks per 9-6-6-6-6 walks per 9 this year
249 ERA 345 FIP
It's been worth basically a full win by Fangraph standards
And 50 and two-thirds innings pitched
5-1 record for Schmidt
Any thoughts on him
Yeah tough night
Coming up because he's dropped his hard hit rate by 8%
This year
His strikeout rate has
jumped by about 5%, 4.5%,
like prior to this year, he was kind of right at league average,
a 22% strikeout rate.
This year he's at 27%.
The fastball run values are off the charts,
the breaking ball run value are off the charts.
Cutter, sweeper, sinker, knuckle curve.
So those are the four pitchers.
That sounds like a Jerry DePoto pitcher.
Right.
Unfortunately, he's not.
And, you know, the cutter is generating a 30% whiff rate.
The knuckle curve is generating a 35% whiff rate.
It's going to be a tough night for the Mariners offense.
They're really going to have to grind these at bats.
Now, the sinker, not a high average, but when you do hit it, teams are doing damage against
that pitch.
So it seems to be the key.
Get the sinker in the middle of the plate.
And when you do, you have to damage it.
You have to hit doubles.
You have to hit home runs.
Like you have to get extra base hits.
because he's probably not going to walk you around the bases like Clay Holmes kind of did last night,
and he can miss a lot of bats.
So he's going to throw a lot of strikes.
He's going to get a lot of so he misses.
Mariners have been better at strikeouts over the last week or so.
Tonight might be one of those nights where they strike out 11, 12 times.
Like, it's just that good of stuff.
So hopefully you can get him out of this game relatively early.
You can go to work on the bullpen and Wu keeps it close,
and you can kind of battle it out against bullpins, which apparently, you know, apparently
that's Seattle's favorite thing to do in the world is hit against your bullpen.
So they can get Schmidt out after six and the game's relatively close.
Then they're going to have a shot to win it.
But this is one of those grinded out type of games where, you know, there's going to be bad at bats.
They're going to strand a guy at some point.
It's going to be really frustrating for a long time.
But if you can just, you know, pump up that pitch count a little bit, when he doesn't make a mistake,
hit something hard in the gap or over the fence, maybe find a way to scratch out a run or two off of him
and hope that Wu keeps you in the game
so you can attack this bullpen
that is not going to have Clay Holmes tonight.
So I think that's the key to this victory
is you just got to grind.
You just have to stay grinding and you have to.
When you do get a mistake, you have to take advantage of it.
Absolutely.
Yeah, it's going to be a war of attrition with Schmidt tonight
and hopefully you're able to get into that bullpen.
That is going to do it for our show.
