Starting point is 00:00:55 So it's open up the mailbag and dive into your questions just like we do here every single Monday. Brett wants to know, what's your opinion on how Logan Evans did today or brother? Yesterday. MLB debut for Logan Evans. It was cool to see. What did you think about it? It was pretty good. The three walks are annoying and not something that Evans has dealt with.
Starting point is 00:01:17 He had four walks all year down in AAA and yesterday. Yesterday he had three. So some of that nerves, all three, I think all three of them were four pitch walks too. Or at least two of them were. So yeah. There was a one where the first pitch should have been strike on. And then he just not even close. next thing.
Starting point is 00:01:36 And he wasn't close. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, got himself into a little bit of a jam there in the fifth, but it was able to get out of it as well. Again,
Starting point is 00:01:45 fielded his position really well. He's already the best defensive pitcher the marriage of had since Mike League. I mean, it's not a high bar to clear, but still, like, he fielded a bunt and he got in a covered first base without a problem. Wow.
Starting point is 00:01:57 This guy's really good. Yeah, you know, it was pretty interesting. Kitchen Sync methodology. I talked about this on our post game show on C. Z yesterday. He threw six different pitches and the distribution of those six was pretty darn even.
Starting point is 00:02:13 We saw the sweeper that has generated a lot of buzz and you can certainly see why it is a super high spin rate pitch. So is his curveball, both near or at elite levels in terms of spin rate. You know, got in trouble with it a couple times, hung a couple of them. That's fine. But you didn't give up a lot of hard contact. he managed the strike zone pretty well again the three walks not great and yeah it was just kind of a I'd say number five type of outing with some better stuff than your typical number five
Starting point is 00:02:50 the sweeper and curb ball are both really good the cutter is pretty solid as well so I would say yeah the breaking balls were plus yesterday the cutter was about average the four seamer and the change up and everything else yeah you know so but yeah he's probably going to get a lot of ground balls with what we saw yesterday. And then we'll see if the whiffs come. That's the one that he didn't get really generate any swing and miss, just the three strikeouts. So we'll see.
Starting point is 00:03:16 But overall, yeah, first time out there, you know, ran into some trouble in the first. But, yeah, I think he performed pretty darn well and about, as you would expect, a guy like Logan Evans to perform. Well, especially like it looked like he was a bit amped going out there. He gives up the home run in the first inning. He's able to bounce back from that and give you five innings, which you really needed. Yeah, it was pretty much as advertised, like you mentioned,
Starting point is 00:03:39 kitchen sink approach. Sweeper was by far the best pitch that he threw on the day. Thomas Nesico at TJ Stats on Twitter has his own pitching data models. On those, Evans graded out at a 115 stuff plus on the sweeper, which is 15% above league average. Works basically the same as WRC Plus does. 63 grade on the 2080 scale on that pitch. 58 grade on the sinker for him as well.
Starting point is 00:04:09 The stuff overall graded out exactly at 100. The average. So yeah, that's about what you would expect from Evans. Yeah, you know, we'll see as he gets a little more comfortable, how the stuff plays up,
Starting point is 00:04:23 how he attacks hitters. But yeah, you can see like sometimes he spins it so much that he misses badly or he'll start on the inside corner accidentally, and the spin will take it right to the middle of the, the plate. So, yeah, there's still some things tiring out there. It's not a perfect start by any stretch, but it is certainly a good one against the team. That's probably a pretty good match at him. The Marlins are a super aggressive ball club at the plate. And so, yeah, a lot of ground balls,
Starting point is 00:04:49 as we mentioned. So, yeah, we'll do what he does on the weekend. I assume they're not going to skip him this weekend. I think he'll be scheduled to pitch then on Sunday with the off days. again, they could move them around if they need to, blah, blah, blah. But yeah, I thought he performed pretty well. It was a solid first outing. And, yeah, I think, you know, again, what we need to see now is we need to see a little bit more swing and miss, which may or may not come. I don't know. And then the velocity was, remember last year he was hitting like 98?
Starting point is 00:05:27 This year, 93, 94, which is typically where he sits. Like the 98 is when he really wants to reach back and fire it in there. Yeah, he's going to be kind of a sinker slider cutter. Slider sleeper, cutter approach. And he's going to try and get a lot of ground balls and he's going to throw strikes. And that's just kind of what you're going to get. And as a fill in, that's fine. Long term.
Starting point is 00:05:49 We'll see. Yeah. I don't want to make any judgment calls off of one start. But it was a solid first out of him. Yeah. Really cool to see his family at the ballpark. His dad, Lawrence, is a listener of the show. show and we had been DM in back and forth over the last few weeks like wondering you know when exactly
Starting point is 00:06:05 he's going to get the call and so it was cool to uh you know congratulate him on that and then see them on the broadcast and got to see them on the post game show as well uh they were down on the field talking with cal and then getting to see the moment with uh logan and his mom uh after the game was really congratulations to logan congratulations to his family uh was a really really cool moment really cool start again like i said some things to clean up for sure but uh it's nice to see him battle uh after the uh the home run to ramirez who's like the hottest hitter on the planet anyway uh that guy's insane geez uh but uh yeah it was it was a really cool really cool start for for logan and looking forward to seeing uh what he looks like his next time out next question here from
Starting point is 00:06:47 scott uh so what do you think the real diagnosis of logan gilbert is considering that what they said was a lot like what was said about Robbie Ray when he went down with Tommy John. Yeah. Yeah, great one. Flexor strain and the elbow. We'll reevaluate in two weeks. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:06 Yeah. The exact same verbiage they use for Robbie Ray. Yeah. Like exact with the same plan. Also, I believe, very similar to the verbiage they use with Marco Gonzalez. So it doesn't seem like the UCL is fully torn, which is good news. My concern here, though, is that in two weeks or shortly thereafter, they find out there's actually a small tear there and they got to do the brace. Right.
Starting point is 00:07:36 That's what my concern is right now. Which is preferable to the full-blown Tommy John, but it still means he's out for this year. And probably the first month or two of next year. Yeah. So should say that Logan doesn't seem super concerned. or super down in the dumps when he's talked to the media. He continues to say like, oh, it could be a lot worse than it is. So, and he said that he already felt better on Sunday than he did the, or Saturday,
Starting point is 00:08:08 than he did the, on, you know, the night before when everything happened. And apparently this has been something that he's been dealing with all year, which is a little bit of a concern, especially when Bryce Miller has also been dealing with harm fatigue, like what's going on with marriage pitchers right now in general. but yeah it's something that apparently had gone away and most of his starts just didn't on Friday and so they finally just kind of shut things down so yeah I mean the the best case scenario here is that Logan misses a couple of months he's not going to miss just a month like Jerry said on the pregame show what Saturday night like that's that's not going to happen because
Starting point is 00:08:50 he's shut down for the next two weeks. He then has to, let's just say that like in two weeks, he actually is clear to throw again. At that point, he probably still has to throw some bullpins, maybe some live BP, and then have at least a couple of rehab starts down in Tacoma or wherever. Yeah, probably one or two. I think if you get Logan back by mid-June, I think that'd probably be best case scenario. Yeah. you know, it is worth noting that Brian Wu had this.
Starting point is 00:09:24 It wasn't a flexor bundle, but it was kind of a similar thing. And it was like, hey, yeah, we need to shut him down for a month. And I think we all assumed that that was like, nope, he's getting Tommy John again. And he wasn't. He was fine. And he actually came back better. So again, I guess there is a possibility here. We're not doctors again.
Starting point is 00:09:40 But it is the exact same verbiage and the exact same injury that Robbie Ray had. And then 10 days later, it was like, he needs Tommy John. So yeah. Well, and when you when you hear right forearm tightness in general, I mean, yeah, Jacob de Grom had that he needed Tommy John two years ago. Dussam May had forearm tightness. He had to have Tommy John. Like there's just so many examples of that unfortunately leading to that surgery, which, uh, yeah, it just makes you incredibly nervous until you actually see him back on a mound throwing. There's just going to be kind of this lingering thing of like, is that going to
Starting point is 00:10:18 happen? Even when he's throwing at this stage, now you're probably like, when is that thing going to pop? So we'll see again. Not doctors. But my strategy for this is simply to assume the worst. And then if I see Logan Gilbert back on the mound at any point this year for the Mariners, I just get to be happy about that. But I'm going to assume that we have seen the last Logan Gilbert this year.
Starting point is 00:10:43 That's just how I'm approaching it. And, you know, I will probably have a lot more clarity on that. that in a couple weeks. We just have to sit and wait, unfortunately. But yeah, my assumption is, is that he is going to be out for a long time. At least, at least a while, right? Like, even if we get best case scenario here, I would assume what it's going to, it's going to be mid June and maybe we're even talking about the All-Star break. Yeah. So, you know, certainly that's preferable to Tommy John and he's out for this year and a good chunk of next. But this thing's happened.
Starting point is 00:11:19 You know, and this is why, you know, the best laid plans and whatnot. And also why we talked about why you can't trade Luis Castillo unless you get the pitcher back to replace him because. I mean, shoot. Yeah, think about if they actually did that this offseason. And also think about how bad some of the players we talked about for Castillo have been to start the year. Like Tristan Kossis, I know he had the good series against the Maras, but he's been terrible this year. Yeah. So, yeah, it's, again, I'm just going to assume the worst and then allow myself to be pleasantly surprised.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Sure. That would be my strategy. Yeah. For this, just because, again, of the specificity of the injury and all that stuff, this is almost always a precursor to Tommy John surgery. Yeah. All right. So we'll talk a little bit more about that and answer more of your questions in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown-Ares podcast is brought to you by Fandul. Starting point is 00:13:02 Before we get back into your questions here on Mailbag, Monday, we have an announcement to make. Locked on Mariners is expanding both here on the YouTube channel and on our podcast platforms, wherever you listen to us. We are adding a show. Now, the reason that I wanted to announce this today, It's because Colby and I are not going to be hosting this show. This is going to be hosted by Anderson Hearst or Andershurst of KJR and the Emerald City
Starting point is 00:13:31 Spectrum, which is a website that I also write on. He's a Sounders reporter for us over at Emerald City Spectrum. And Christopher Crawford, who you probably are already familiar with from his show on YouTube, Myo Y, as well as NBC Sports, and also the Emerald City Spectrum, where he writes about the Mariners alongside yours truly. So those two guys are going to be hosting what is called the Mariners Postcast. It is a postgame show, 15 to 20 minute episode that is going to be live streamed after, I believe, every single game, where they are going to get into just the quick hitting news
Starting point is 00:14:08 notes from the game that just happened. This is not going to change anything that Colby and I do here on this channel or here on the show. in general, though. Just want to make that very clear. We're still going to do postgame shows because we're going to get into the actual like nitty gritty of the game whenever there's a day game and it makes more sense for us to, you know, record a show after the game happens. So nothing that Colby and I do changes.
Starting point is 00:14:36 You guys are just going to get more content. And so I hope that you guys welcome Chris and Anders with open arms. I believe they are supposed to start this next week sometime. I believe maybe even Monday. I believe the Marrers are playing on Monday. So that might be the first episode. Still kind of unsure on when the first show will be, but it's happening soon.
Starting point is 00:14:57 So didn't want you guys to be alarmed if, you know, you saw Anders and Chris on a show and you're wondering, you know, where is Ty and Colby? We're still here. We're still going to be giving you episodes five days a week. I'll still be doing post game shorts, all that good stuff. Nothing is going to change on our front. You guys are just going to get more content.
Starting point is 00:15:17 All right. So let's get back into your questions here. Luke wants to know if the worst comes to pass and Logan is out for the season with Tommy John, do we look to trade and upgrade the pitching staff or do we hope George Kirby comes back and Logan Evans can take the fifth spot? So on Evans, you kind of have to wonder like how many innings can he take on. How many pitches can he take on over the course of the year? That probably has to come into play here eventually. So here's what I would do right now just immediately. I would go out and sign Spencer Turnbull
Starting point is 00:15:48 and start getting him ramped up. Even if he doesn't pitch for you at the major league level, you just need to kind of reestablish some pitching depth in your organization right now, especially because Michael Morales hasn't pitched yet. Brandon Garcia is a full-time reliever right now. So you don't have those guys available to you. So it's Luis F. Castillo.
Starting point is 00:16:06 It's Sauerlau. Yeah. Casey Lawrence. Casey Lawrence. Yeah. So I would go out and get Turnbull, if anything, just to kind of reestablish.
Starting point is 00:16:16 your pitching depth in AAA. Eventually, though, yeah, if Logan is out for the year, you got to go out in the trade market. You got to use your farm system to go out and out of pitch your. Now, you don't necessarily need to go out and get your Luis Castillo. No, you should be open to it, but no, you don't have to. Yeah. But if you could just get like a number four type of dude. Kind of like when you got Tyler Anderson in 2021.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Yeah, yeah, pretty much. Same idea. you should at least look to do that who that might be i don't know right because we we need the season to play out a bit sure i've got some names in mind but yeah i mean we don't we don't know who's going to be available quite yet but yeah you can't really go out and make that trade right now just because that guy's not out there like i mean the rockies should be trading everything they possibly can and soon but a they're the rockies are pretty dumb and be who even on that pitching staff do you want yeah so
Starting point is 00:17:16 Yeah, what's the other things play out. But yeah, there's definitely a few names that make a lot of sense and are going and, well, probably are going to be available this summer. But yeah, I don't know if you're going to get like that ace type. I don't know if you need that guy. But yeah, you're definitely going to need a veteran. There's no question about it. Honestly, you probably should go get one even if Logan is okay. Because, again, Bryce is still doing his thing.
Starting point is 00:17:42 We still, I mean, we think George will be back. who knows so yeah they probably should go get one anyways but yeah they're going to have to go get a guy this summer I would imagine because still even though your office has been really good pitching is what is going to lead you to the World Series if that's your goal
Starting point is 00:18:01 it's going to be your pitching yeah so again even if it's just like the Tyler Anderson type which that costs you what Carter Ben's yeah like you got to you should probably go out and add someone this summer but you don't have to, you know, break the bank to go get that guy either.
Starting point is 00:18:20 Like if, if you still want your biggest, if you still want your biggest addition to be a bat, you can still do that while also adding a, you know, a number four type of starter. The other thing on, on this note that I wanted to mention quickly, and then I'll ask you what kind of names you have your eye on is if he does have Tommy John surgery or he does have to have the brace put in, either one, this changes everything. It changes the way 2025 goes for the merits. It changes the way
Starting point is 00:18:51 that they approach 2026 and how at least the first couple of months of 2026 goes. And even then, you know, once Gilbert gets back, what does he look like? You know, how much do you have to manage him? All that stuff. And then by the way,
Starting point is 00:19:07 2027 is his contract year. It changes the entire conversation around his future in Seattle. and the extension, right, if you actually want to extend him. So if they have to go out a starting pitcher, and maybe that's even if Gilbert is fine and able to return to the rotation, who are some names you're looking at?
Starting point is 00:19:33 Yeah, I mean, again, a lot of these depend on, because you're not going to get these done right now. So a lot of these will depend on where teams are at. So I could say a name now, and in July they could be in first place, right? So just keep that in mind. These aren't predictions. Guys, I would keep an eye on teams almost that I would keep an eye on. Minnesota's got a couple dudes who make a lot of sense if they continue to struggle.
Starting point is 00:19:56 They're playing better ball recently, though, but we'll see. But yeah, obviously Pablo Lopez is the big one. Joe Ryan would be super interesting to me as well. Bailey Over is a fun name. The Cardinals, Sunny Gray, who is a pitcher. We know that the Mariners have tried to get in the past, and Jerry really has liked him. He's making a lot of money, so that might be tough to pull off.
Starting point is 00:20:16 But maybe, how about his teammate Eric Fetty? Certainly a kind of a number four type of guy who can pitch, you know, very well and fill that role. Maybe it may be a Merrill Kelly, maybe. I kind of have to see what what Arizona wants to do. They'll be competitive, but they might be upgrading that rotation. Kelly might become expendable. Sandy Alcantara is another one who I talked about this weekend. and he was just in the building.
Starting point is 00:20:44 He didn't pitch. He hasn't been as good. Like he was a Cy Young winner in 2022. 2023, he was solid, but not amazing. Then he was hurt. He missed all 2024 and 2025. It's been a bit of a problem with him so far. But he's got incredible stuff and he's a workhorse and all that.
Starting point is 00:21:02 You get him for two years. But he's going to cost about $17 million. So, yeah, I mean, those are just for you guys. I think if the Cardinals are willing to eat a good chunk of something, Sunny Gray, he might be the guy that the Mariners kind of target and go out there and get because they've liked him in the past. But yeah, those are just a few and more will come. You know, certainly teams will fall out.
Starting point is 00:21:25 You know, maybe there's something with Baltimore. They continue to struggle. But yeah, I mean, right now the teams that are really bad are the teams who already thought were bad, going to be bad, and they don't really have any pitching. That's going to interest you that much. So Martin Perez would have been interesting for the White Sox, but unfortunately, out for the year, elbow. So yeah, I think Fetty is probably the guy to watch
Starting point is 00:21:47 because I think he's probably going to be the cheapest guy to acquire. Still pretty expensive, but pretty cheap. I think he's a rental. I can't remember if he's got an option or something on that contract, but I'm pretty sure he's a rental. And he's just solid. He's just a solid pitcher who's going to eat some innings for you. And that's probably what the priority would be
Starting point is 00:22:03 because I don't think the Mariners are going to want to try and add like a significant hitter and a significant arm at the deadline. that's probably a bit too much for them to ask. Although, again, significant is open for interpretation. Next question here from Ross. If the All-Star game was tomorrow, how many Mariners make the team? Munoz and Raleigh for sure. Yeah, I would say three.
Starting point is 00:22:26 I think Polo makes it as the DH. It just depends on how they view the, you know, the limited play. Technically, he's not a qualified hitter right now. Which, unless he gets hurt again, he will be in July. Yeah. But he's like by far the best. in the game right now. Like he's like even better than Otani right now statistically.
Starting point is 00:22:45 Like significantly better than Otani statistically right now, which is an insane thing to say. But like Polo should be the DH for the AL. Yep. Munoz definitely makes it. Cal definitely makes it. And then you kind of like- Mooney right now by B-Wor is the most valuable player.
Starting point is 00:23:03 And in the American League. Like that's insane. I think in baseball, right? Most valuable pitcher in all of baseball. I think it's just the American League, but still. Either way, like All-Star. Yes.
Starting point is 00:23:13 So I would say two for sure. Polo definitely going to be in the running. Again, we're assuming the game is tomorrow. So basically what they've done in April is the only thing that counts. So those two for sure, Polo, probably, as the DH. You know, Logan would probably make it. But unfortunately, obviously, you wouldn't be able to pitch in it, blah, blah, blah. Maybe Brian Wu.
Starting point is 00:23:38 I think Logan and Wu are maybe's. I'll give you a dark course. who probably has no shot but deserves consideration right now. Gabe Spire. Yeah. Now, typically the All-Star game, they pick maybe one or two non-closers.
Starting point is 00:23:54 Yeah. And Gabe Spire right now is just about as good as anybody in terms of not being the closer role. And if not for a cheap pesky pull home run, he would still run a ERA of zero right now. Mm-hmm. So maybe Gabe Spire can sneak in there. I'm not quite sure what the other middle relief setup guys who's really performing well there.
Starting point is 00:24:16 But yeah, definitely Cal and Munoz for sure. Polo should be the DH again if the game was tomorrow. Then I think either Gilbert or Wu would make it, but obviously Gilbert wouldn't be able to play blah, blah, blah. So I think because there's like, I think because you already have some sure fire all stars elsewhere, Wu probably doesn't make the cut because that's where maybe like someone, you know, it was like a team that doesn't have an all-star gets a starting pitcher. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:43 Like everyone has to have at least one. Right. So yeah, that's probably where you lose out. The other one that I would say here real quick is J.P. Crawford should be. Yes. Because he's leading all qualified shortstop.
Starting point is 00:24:56 The best thing shortstop in baseball. Yeah, he's leading all qualified short stops in WRC plus at the time of this recording. But we all know that they, yeah, we all know that they don't give out all-star selections based on WRC Plus and J.P. He deserves him, no.
Starting point is 00:25:12 Yeah, yeah. So and JP doesn't, you know, he doesn't have the slug right now. He's, you know, he's hitting for a 272 average, which is like, I don't know exactly where, right. Yeah, it's really good, but it doesn't, it's not tops among all short stops. Like Bobby Witt's going to get that. Bobby Witt Jr. Gunner Henderson. Yeah. Like those guys are going to get the nod there. Yeah. So again, JP, kind of being screwed a little bit by the position,
Starting point is 00:25:38 but that happens every year. But yeah, I would say two minimum for maximum right now, I think is probably where I'm at. Yeah, yeah, yeah, which is really good. It's really, really good. All right. We are going to answer more of your questions here in just a moment. But first reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by GameTime. Starting point is 00:27:09 Mariner's podcast. Let's get back into your questions here on Mailbag Monday. Alex wants to know, what are the roster moves you're making if you're the Mariners' GM tomorrow? I am sending Trent Thornton to Asgaband. And I am calling up, doesn't matter, literally anyone. Or I'm just activating Matt Brashe if he's ready. Yeah. Thornton can't be here anymore. We all know it, except for Dan Wilson, apparently, and Jerry Depoto.
Starting point is 00:27:35 He can't be here. He's not good. He's not a major leaguer. Not right now. And the beauty is you probably DFAM. He probably clears because I don't think anybody's going to take a shot on that right now. So you might be able to send him to Tacoma when all of a sudden done. But you'd have to wait and see there.
Starting point is 00:27:52 But yeah, he's got to go. And like you said, it doesn't really matter who you call up. Now, I looked to see who was throwing the ball well in Tacoma. And the answer is nobody. So like Austin Kitchens might be your best option there. You could call up Blas Castano. Maybe you want some, you know, length out of your bullpen again. But if Brash isn't ready, then you're probably just going to call up Casey Lawrence.
Starting point is 00:28:18 And honestly, I'd rather have Casey Lawrence in this bullpen than Trent Thornton right now. So, yeah, you could also just have a seven-man bullpen and call up somebody like Samad Taylor who would help you. But yeah, the move is you DFA Thornton for it doesn't matter. But because we need a name, I'll say Brash if he's ready, if you don't think he's ready, then I'll go Jesse Hahn. and that's fine. And then, yeah, offensively, I don't know if there's any moves to make.
Starting point is 00:28:45 You could DFA Solano still. I know he had the double yesterday. You know, a couple hits this series. I don't think they're going to DFA him, but you could. And then I'd call up Samad Taylor would be the guy I would call up there.
Starting point is 00:28:59 But now we don't know what's going on with Rowdy and his finger. Is that broken? Is it what we don't know? Yeah. How much he's going to be able to play over the next couple days. So I don't really think there's a roster move to make on the offensive side until we know the health of Rowdy-Tales, which gross.
Starting point is 00:29:16 But that's where we're at right now. So, yeah, I think it's really just dorton down, anybody else up. But, you know, if Brash isn't ready, then I guess I would pick Jesse Hahn out of everybody who's in the down there in Tacoma. So, yeah, I don't think there's an offensive move to make. You could. There are offensive moves you could make. I don't know if I'd make them right now. Yeah. And then again, I would I would sign Spencer Turnbull and start ramping him up and just at the very least,
Starting point is 00:29:46 just reestablish the depth, the pitching depth down in Tacoma. Agreed. Next question here from the heat miser. Was the scouting report on Ben Williamson wrong? The dude has come up and raked when everyone said that he was going to be all glove. Do you see this as a flash in the pan? Are there indicators that he will be a good hitter at this level? I don't think the scouting report has been wrong.
Starting point is 00:30:08 The scouting report was that, you know, Williamson, if he is going to hit, he's going to hit for average and the power, any sort of power that he does output is going to be more doubles than over the wall. And that's what we've seen so far. Like he might run into a, you know, a couple of home runs here and there, but that's that's really it. And so far we're kind of seeing like the high end of that at the moment. Can he maintain that? I mean, he's probably not going to be a, you know, an over 300 hitter for the whole season. but can he sustain league average production at the plate?
Starting point is 00:30:38 Sure. Maybe. Wouldn't bank on it, but I don't think he's going to be a 65 WRC plus the rest of the way because he does make a lot of contact. And the Sky report is that the swing is flat
Starting point is 00:30:53 and there's not tremendous bat speed. So when you have a flat swing and a slow bat, you're not going to generate a lot of power, not home run power anyways. So yeah, I think that part's been proven true. It's nice that he's already got his first one out of the way. That's great. But no, he's, you know, putting the ball in play. He's, you know, spreading the ball around. He sprays the ball around. So he's kind of tough to shift against. He's hitting the ball hard, which he did in the minors.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Ex-a-vilos were never a problem for him. And yeah, it is just very much, I think what as advertised, it's just you're getting the high end of what was advertised right now. And then we'll see what the league adjust to him and we'll see how he adjust to that, blah, blah, blah, blah. We know how that game goes. But no, I don't think the Skyny reports have been proven wrong. I don't think we're seeing anything other than the 100th percentile Ben Williamson right now, which is a good, helpful player. But probably not somebody you want to build around because, again, the power is just not there. And, yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:53 His bat with better profile over at second. Yeah. He's a second baseman playing third base. But the defense is so good that you hope that. But we've also talked about this. that like, you know, right now, just at third base in general across the league, if you don't have one of the top seven dudes, you're not going to get, you know, an actual, like, ideal third base offensive profile if you're actually trying to get, you know, value out of third base, right? Because like if you're going to get power, if you don't have one of those like top seven dudes, but you're trying to still get power there, then you really sacrificing the defense. So it's like what's more valuable, right? Having good defense and average at third base or just going for all power. Yeah. You want Patrick. wisdom or you want Josh Rojas. Right.
Starting point is 00:32:36 Pretty much. So Williamson right now, because the merits just don't have one of those top seven, top eight dudes is fine, right? And then that creates an interesting conversation once you get to the deadline. If Williamson is still, you know, producing maybe he is, you know, a league average bat and giving you pretty good defense where it's like how much better is X player than Ben Williamson at that point, right? Like, do I really want to trade X, Y, and Z for Isaiah kind of falafa when I have Ben
Starting point is 00:33:02 Williamson at home. I don't know. Yeah, probably know. By the way, uh, ICF is probably the best cop for Ben Williamson right now. Yeah. Yeah. That's actually a really good one. All right. Last question of the day comes from Deep Pinky. Obviously, Solano has been real bad and to Les is who he is. But how relieved are you? The Mariners weren't able to sign their number one free agent target, Carlos Santana and it's 65 WRC plus heading into Sunday or do you think he'll turn around even at his age? I haven't watched them, so I don't know how to answer the last part of that question. But, yeah, I mean, we talked about this. Like, they wanted to give them a two-year deal.
Starting point is 00:33:38 Like, I was fine with them bringing back Santana in a vacuum, but on a two-year deal at his age. Yeah. I thought Santana would be a really good, like, second piece to the off-season. Ideally, a third bat, but whatever. Yeah. Turned out that was, you only got one. And thankfully, the Mariners, I mean, Cleveland did them a favor
Starting point is 00:34:01 because the Mariners ended up walking backwards into Jorge Polanco and finding All-Star Jorge again. Yeah, well, that's, I think that's a better way of looking at this instead of it like, you know, instead of Santana, you got Solano or, you know, and Teles. Really, it's like if you signed Santana to that deal, which was apparently north of $12 million. Yeah. Over the course of over two years. So who knows what year one would have looked like. But had they signed that deal. do they still get hori polo polo might be playing for the astros right now if they signed santana oh god could you imagine
Starting point is 00:34:39 if he was doing what he's doing right now for the astros yeah um oh so yeah uh i guess with the benefit of hindsight yeah uh it's probably a good thing uh but uh you know first base is still a tremendous need and i would still rather have santana than uh salano and teles but i'd also rather have Polanco than Santana. So yeah. Yeah. It kind of depends on how you want to look at it. But yeah,
Starting point is 00:35:07 sometimes, you know, things work out good for you. Yeah. You accidentally make the right decision. If the cost of having Solano and Tellez is, you know, having Polanco,
Starting point is 00:35:19 then fine. Like, I'm totally fine with having those two guys because I have Polanco. Right. Well, I mean, this version of Horat Palanco. My guess is is that at the end of the year,
Starting point is 00:35:27 we look at it. And Santana and Palanco are meeting much closer. are in the middle of what they've actually produced so far. But sure. Yeah. No, it's probably a good thing that they, that Cleveland kind of came in on the 11th hour and, and kind of bailed out the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:35:43 So, uh, thank you, Cleveland. All right. That's going to do it for our show. Thank you so much for joining us here on the lockdown Maris podcast for Colby Pat Node.
