Starting point is 00:00:00 It's time to talk about the best catcher in the game as well as the possibility of a bounce back year for his backup. Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Oh, Hoy, Sailors. It is Thursday, February 27, 20-25. This is titting his awesome. Colby Patnode for the Lockdown Marys Podcasts podcast, part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. Today's episode is all about Cal Raleigh and Mitch Garver.
Starting point is 00:00:35 We will also talk a little bit about Harry Ford, but we're mostly going to be focused on Raleigh and Garber. It's our catcher preview. Before we get into it, a reminder, as always, if you want to hear from me and Colby even more and help support the show, you can check out our Patreon. All you have to do to check that out is click the link in the description of this episode. So, hey, the Scal Raleigh guy, pretty good of baseball. Gold glove winner, platinum glove winner, get some down ballot votes in the MVP race. seventh place vote, eighth place vote, a couple of ninth place votes,
Starting point is 00:01:09 10th place vote. He had 34 home runs, 100 RBI. He only hit 220 though. Yeah, yeah. And apparently that's all the reason to put him behind Adley Ruchman, according to MLB network,
Starting point is 00:01:24 even though that Adley Ratchman literally hit a 63 WRC plus. Oh, whatever. But you're not being fair because if you take away May to October, Adley Ruchman had a really good year last year. Right. My apologies to Adley Rushman and the Rutchman family.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Just cherry picking sample sizes now, Ty. Yeah, exactly. 2.2312, 436, the slash line for Mr. Raleigh, 117 WRC plus 5.4 F4. Again, the 34 home runs and 100 RBI on top
Starting point is 00:01:55 of being a platinum glove winner. Pretty remarkable stuff. He also surpasses Mike Piazza for the most home runs by a catcher in his first four years in major league baseball. So yeah, I mean, this is a bit different than the, the other position previews that we've done so far because it's just like,
Starting point is 00:02:15 Cal Raleigh is probably the best player at his position already. So like how much better can he get really? Probably a little bit. Like he could hit for a higher average. He could, you know, get on base a little bit more. 312 on base isn't great. But again, it's the tradeoff of being an elite defensive catcher with elite power. who's a switch hitter.
Starting point is 00:02:37 You know, so like if this, if the slash line is what it is, and Cal is just a 117, 118 WRC plus guy, which is very good for a catcher, again, who also catches more than anybody else in baseball. The guy, you know, gets grinded down to a nub every single year because America used to take him out of the lineup. So, yeah, could he get better? Yeah, I mean, I suppose he could probably hit 240,
Starting point is 00:03:02 but, you know, you might lose a couple home runs if he tried that. Now, he basically is from the left side. It's his struggles on the right side that have lowered his overall numbers. We see improvements from the right side this year, though. Yeah, but he still hit 183 as a righty this year, or last year, however you want to look at it.
Starting point is 00:03:24 So, you know, 97WRC plus. So, like, if there's one area that I would like to see improvement from Raleigh this year, it would be, you know, more average from the right side. overall more production from the right side, get above a 100 WRC plus in that regard. Right. I mean,
Starting point is 00:03:41 one of the things that could help him out there is that if the Mariners actually had a true platoon partner to not have Raleigh face a ton of tough lefties, but, you know, the problem is he's so good defensively that you don't really care about. And like you said,
Starting point is 00:03:57 he may hit like a buck 80, but he's also got, what, 12 home runs from the right side last year or whatever it was? like including I think a couple grand slams were from the right side. There was the one in Minnesota. Yes. I feel like the other one was against maybe the Mets, but that was from the left side, I think.
Starting point is 00:04:18 Yeah, the Sunday night baseball game you're talking about. Was that a salami or is that a three run homer? No, no, no. That was definitely from the last. That was from the left side. Yeah, that was from the last side. Against the White Sox. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:04:31 That's what I was thinking of. All right. So, yeah, I mean, it's tough to take him out of the lineup. But I actually do think that he would be better overall if the Mariners could find a way not to play him in 150 games. Yeah, he played 153 games last year and caught 135 of them. That's too much. So this is probably go hand in hand with our Garver discussion. But yeah, they got to get Raleigh out a little bit more than they have.
Starting point is 00:05:00 Right. They also have to give them just more actual. a full days off. Like, not just D.H. Like, no, get off your feet. Yeah. And, you know, again, it's, it's really tough because it's no disrespect to Garver. It's just that anybody you put in besides Cal Raleigh behind the plate is going to be a massive downgrade.
Starting point is 00:05:18 That's just how it works. Yeah. Yeah. So it doesn't matter if it is Garver or Ford or Tom Murphy or, you know, any of the other catchers that have been with the Mariners for the last, you know, 10 years or so. It's just going to be a major downgrade. going from Cal to that guy. But you got to do it. You got to play the long game a little bit.
Starting point is 00:05:37 And we know that Cal will go through some long cold stretches. And you have to wonder, a part of that. I mean, obviously some of it is that he's a swing and miss guy. And that's just natural with being kind of a swing and miss guy. But also, like, dude's exhausted. And we know he's a warrior. And we know he plays through a lot of injuries. And, you know, it's something that is,
Starting point is 00:06:03 restate it over and over again. Anytime we talk to anybody with the Mariners about Cal Raleigh, they always mention his toughness and how it's like an underrated part of his game. And it's like, no, I feel like, every time we've talked to, you know, Gary Hill or Aaron Goldsmith, they've, they've talked about, you know, after the, the Blue Jays Wild Card series and going down and seeing him with the club on his hand and all that. Like, and that's great and that's awesome that he plays through all that stuff. But it would be nice to actually just keep him healthy a bit more and and not have them, you know, have to like battle through all this stuff, you know, on a day-to-day basis. And that should have a positive effect on him offensively, too, you would think.
Starting point is 00:06:41 In theory, yeah, you would think. Yeah. I think if you could get Cal at 130 games and he catches like 100. I think that's probably what you should be shooting for. And that's, you know, about a day off a week. And then every once in a while he gets two days off in a week. And that's not uncommon. I mean, there's two day games in a week.
Starting point is 00:07:03 And so it's not hard to, you know, make that work. And I would like to see them do that pretty early. They should make it a point early to get Cal, you know, off his feet. Because how many times did we see day game after a night game and Cal Raleigh was still catching the next day? And, you know, it's he's 28. Like he's not young, young, but he is still pretty young. But, you know, also of your cow selfishly, it's like, look, I haven't gotten paid yet. and my knees are, you know, getting grinded into dust as we speak.
Starting point is 00:07:34 Like I got to take more days off here. I got to, you know, but that's just not how Cal is wired. He wants to be in there every day. And it just, it's this really tough balancing act. The Mariners have to, you know, have to manage because it is, you do want to get Cal time off. But he is, you know, arguably your best player. Well, we talked about this with George Kirby. The ultra competitiveness can be a gift.
Starting point is 00:07:59 and a curse. And for Raleigh, it's not a maturity thing like we talked about with Kirby, but it's a, you know, is he doing the best for his body and for him ultimately over the course of a 162 game season plus potentially playoffs? Well, and it's not only is he doing right by him. Is he doing right by his team by consistently not asking for time off and being like, because I think a fresh cow Raleigh benefits everybody. Not only Cal physically and in the long term, but also the Mariners in the long term. And so, yeah, just one of those things where it's like, man, you got to, you got to, you know, it's okay to be like, hey, I can't go to, I need a day.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Like, it's fine. And, and, you know, Cal carries the weight of not only what he does at the play, but all the work he puts in with the starters, especially. So, yeah, it's, it's a personal thing for Cal to be in the lineup every day. But I think the Mariners, it is, it is absurd that any catcher, really, any player is playing 152 games a year, but especially a catcher. Like there, I don't, I don't care of a DH, you know, 20 times last year. It doesn't matter.
Starting point is 00:09:07 You know, he still, it's still work. It's still a grind. And so, yeah, I think Cal, uh, he, I think he can improve like the strikeouts a little bit. I think he can improve the batting average a little bit, be a little more consistent. But I think a big part of that is just playing less and just, you know, making sure you have something in the tank in September and October. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see how Dan handles that. Because, yeah, again, like, it's, it's tough to blame Scott, you know, when he's like,
Starting point is 00:09:40 you know, Cal says he's good to go. I want to put him in the lineup. He's one of my best players. Well, and maybe Dan, and maybe Dan is the right guy to kind of maybe get through to Cal on that front. Yeah, man, I mean, Scott was a 10-year catcher. He was a former catcher as well, yeah. But it does seem like, but it also seems like Cal and Dan have this relationship that maybe him and Scott did.
Starting point is 00:10:05 Like when Dan was hired, that was kind of the first thing that came out of a lot of people's mouths was like him and Cal are pretty tight. You're listening to the Lockdown Marries podcast. So, I mean, this is all really dependent on how good Mitch Garber is. Right. I mean, I just, I think if Garver has a year similar to the one that he's coming off of that. the mariners are probably going to wind up doing something pretty similar with cow and how they and how they deploy him because they just feel that they can't afford taking his bout out of the lineup with any sort of consistency yeah you know that's kind of the problem with the state of
Starting point is 00:10:44 this offense and the fact that arguably your second best hitter is your starting catcher so let's talk about garver um 2023 it was a 270 370 500 hitter on a World Series team. You know, he was a guy that was consistently in the middle of a really, really good Rangers lineup. 140 WRC plus. It's a 2-1 player, 19 homers, 50 RBI, then 2024, 172, 286, 3.41, 88 WRC plus, negative 0.4F4, 15 homers, 51 RBI, 30.9% K rate.
Starting point is 00:11:24 That jumped up about 7% from where he was in 2023. The walk rate stayed pretty much the same. So we did see like elements of the Mitch Garver that they thought they were signing last year. But he was just never really able to put it together. There were a few, you know, good games here and there. He had the big walk off home run against the Braves. But that's about it. And it was a really difficult year for him, both, you know, on the field and frankly off the field with, you know, the messages that he unfortunately received from quote unquote fans.
Starting point is 00:11:58 on Instagram, all that stuff. So I'm fascinated by Garver heading into 2025. You know, I've said to you that I'm pretty high on a bounce back, mostly just because it's just such a low bar for him to clear. Kai believes in witches and I also. And I also do. I do believe in the odd year garber. I do believe in the odd year garber stuff a little bit.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Yeah. Yeah. Well, I mean, all right. Look at this. So 2023 rate 140 WRC plus. Then 2022 with that same Rangers Club, 207, 298, 404, 100 WRC Plus. The year before that, though, 2021, odd year,
Starting point is 00:12:37 256, 356, 358, 517, that's 139 WRC plus. Then a 43 WRC plus in 2020, short and season, whatever. And then 2019, 273, 365, 630, 155 WRC plus. So every odd year leading up to this year, And 18.
Starting point is 00:12:59 Well, that's an even year. It was a 268, 3354, 414, 104 WRC plus. Terrible. Just awful. Nowhere, nowhere near as good as the numbers I just read off to you. 170 WRC plus, so he was awful. I'm just saying. I'm just saying.
Starting point is 00:13:16 You're not saying anything. Every odd year leading up to 2025 has been spectacular for Mitch Carver. I believe in the witchcraft. Whatever you say, Agatha. So, yeah, Garver, underrated show, by the way. Garver, yeah. I sure I'm rooting for him to be. I just realized my colors in the background are kind of Agatha coded.
Starting point is 00:13:41 A little bit. Teens powers are blue and Agatha's are purple. But yeah, you know, he was really bad last year. And so it's tough to know what you're going to get. Now, what's interesting for me about Garver, is that unlike some of the other failed, you know, hitters that the mayors have brought in in recent years, Garber's getting a second shot at T-Mobile Park.
Starting point is 00:14:06 You know, Winker didn't get a second shot. Teo didn't get a second shot. Garber is. He is going to get a second shot. Does that, you know, does having those hundreds of at-bats now at T-Mobile Park, does that help him? Can you make the adjustment? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:14:22 And obviously, you know, Edgar being here in kind of a new approach, Does that help him? I don't know. He wasn't very good, you know, after Edgar came last year. But he also at that stage was barely playing. So yeah. At that point, you would think that he was just so beaten down by the year that he had just experienced that there was just there was no saving him. Right.
Starting point is 00:14:42 We can't understand how much a clean slate actually can help a player mentally. So, yeah, I mean, there's a new coaching staff, kind of. There's new hitting coaches. New hitting. staff for sure yeah right now there's familiarity with the ballpark and there is you know kind of this understanding of this is the role it's one of those things where it's like you hope that there's some familiarity some comfortability is is going to help him mentally and it'd be great if you get off to a hot start and you know the nice thing is or at least the tangible thing we can't
Starting point is 00:15:17 say one of the few tangible things we can say from spring training so far is that garber has made a change at the plate. He's lowered his hands a little bit. We'll see if that ultimately helps him or not. It's not a guarantee to help him, but he's off to a pretty good start here in the spring. He's hitting the ball very hard. And we do know that the power is there still. Like, he still has that power. He can still, you know, absolutely smash home runs at team mobile park. And so at the very least what you have in Carver is you have a, you know, kind of a true backup catcher who gives you one offensive skill that you can kind of count on. He's going to hit home runs. and he is you know he's below average defensively but he's not awful right he's not 30 grade he's not he's not hseus montero like yeah like if he does what he did last year but as a way too expensive
Starting point is 00:16:05 backup catcher fine that's pretty much what you're going to get out of a regular backup catcher you're just going to pay a hell of a lot more money for it than you usually would and at least you're going to get above average power output. Right. But yeah, Garber, it'll be interesting because, you know, later, well, not this month, next month. It feels like this month because February is basically over. But sometime in March we'll be doing a swing players episode where we'll talk about,
Starting point is 00:16:34 you know, the players who have the opportunity to swing the, you know, the results, the furthest in either direction based on their performance. if Garver's like anything close to what he was in 23, the Mariners lineup all of a sudden is pretty good. Yeah, if you get the guy that you were essentially thinking that you were going to get last year, like that, that's huge. Right.
Starting point is 00:16:55 And now you trust Rayleigh more. You have a Rosarena for the full year. You have Robles. And then you kind of add Garber to that mix. And if Garber is close to what he was last year, then you might have to go get a backup catcher because at that point, Garver should probably be the everyday ADH.
Starting point is 00:17:11 Yeah. So it'll be interesting to see what he can do. Again, you know, I don't have any evidence to suggest that he's going to be great or even good this year other than just kind of like, hey, the overall track record of this player says that last year was kind of an outlier for him. And, you know, I guess kind of the hope that second crack at T-Mobile Park and new hitting coach and like all the things we talked about kind of play into this as well. So we'll see that aspect of this is really interesting to me because again, like we talked about when they brought Polanco back. Like there's this narrative that, you know, the marries give up on players too early and players only get, you know, get better once they leave Seattle, right? Sure. Well, they're running it back with Polanco and they, they, I'm going to assume that they did have opportunities this offseason to offload Garber's contract.
Starting point is 00:18:06 They chose not to. maybe there was just nothing that they felt was beneficial to them that was out there but they're running it back with him what does a second run at team mobile park look like now that you've played half of your games there for full season now that you you have really all the information that you need available to you how do you kind of uh you know adjust back to it right So we'll see. I told you this yesterday. I have more faith in Garver being able to accomplish that than Polanco right now.
Starting point is 00:18:42 Just because of Polanco's injuries, having to learn a new position. There's a lot that's being put on Polanco's plate going into this year. And we'll talk a bit more about that next week when we do our infield preview. I'm really interested to see if or well, how they deploy him right out of the gate. Is he going to be just strictly a backup catcher right out of the gate? going to actually get D.H. Opportunities against lefties, which is what you would probably prefer to have happened. But also, Mitch Hanager is probably going to be on the roster.
Starting point is 00:19:13 So the most favorable spot to put Hanager in would probably be to D.H.M. against lefties as well. So how are they going to manage that? But if Garver does pop and we do see essentially the Mitch Garver that we thought we were going to get in 2024, what are they going to do about backup catcher? Yeah. you know they don't necessarily have to carry a backup catcher because they could just do what they did last year where it's you know like hey garber got hurt well cow was deaching today so we'll just call's going to catch we don't have a third catcher and then we're going to have to have our starting pitcher take one app at and then we could just run pinch hitters through there and that you survived that that that was fine and it actually ended up being kind of funny um but you were fine like that so and then the next day you just call up the catcher and you're fine so yeah you know you don't necessarily have to have one, but the mayors haven't been afraid to run with three
Starting point is 00:20:09 catchers in the past. And so I wouldn't be shocked, especially that third guy happens to be Harry Ford, who might have a little versatility to offer off the bench as well. So we'll see. But yeah, I think, you know, I think the mayors have to find a way to give Garber enough at bats early to kind of start to try and get a feel for is he trending in the right direction or is he just kind of doing what he did last year? Because I don't think you want to sit on this guy for two months and then be like in June be like well I mean you know let's try giving him some regular playing time so how they manage you know the the Mitches really in general
Starting point is 00:20:44 is is going to be interesting but you know the nice thing about Garber is you do kind of have that out because you can always put him behind the plate and probably first base and be fine so you mentioned Harry Ford that leads us to our last discussion of the day for Blake Hunt how those guys might be able to factor in in 2025 go over that in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Mariners podcast is brought to you by wonderful pistachios. Looking for a snack that's both delicious and nutritious.
Starting point is 00:21:16 Crack into a good source of protein with wonderful pistachios. Wonderful pistachios is one of the highest protein nuts. Each one ounce serving has six grams of protein, giving you over 10% of your daily value. Plus, they're packed with fiber and better for you unsaturated fats to help keep you feeling fuller longer. Personally, I love the no-shells variety. It's the perfect grab-and-go snack for busy days. Whether I'm snacking at my desk or on a road trip or just need a quick protein boost, they're always my go-to.
Starting point is 00:21:46 And if you love cracking open every shell for that satisfying crunch, the in-shell options are a classic favorite. Get snacking and get cracking with a snack that packs a protein punch. Visit wonderful pistachios.com to learn more. And you're listening to the Locktime Marins podcast to Colby, if you had to predict right now, whether it's one game or 30. Yes. All kinds of possibilities.
Starting point is 00:22:13 It's one game or 30. Do you think we will see Harry Ford catching for the Mariners in 2025? You know, honestly, I don't know, actually. Now, it sounds like the Mariners plan to start him out in AAA, which we could have a discussion whether or not he earned that promotion or not. I would lean no, he actually didn't, but it does feel like the Mariners are pushing a lot of their, you know, closer prospects to Tacoma to start. Cole Young is going to be there. Locklear is going to be there.
Starting point is 00:22:50 Harry Ford's going to be there. Williamson sounds like he's going to be there as well. So it does seem to be a bit more aggressive with getting guys, at least their bats up to AAA. And we know traditionally the Mariners don't like to put their high-calor. over arms in AAA for obvious reasons. But so Ford's going to start through in AAA. So it does seem likely that at some point, even if it is just like as a one game fill in or something like that, that Harry Ford would be the guy.
Starting point is 00:23:18 And you kind of look at who's going to be kind of sharing that job with him in Tacoma. It's probably going to be Raposo or it's going to be Nottingham. Like maybe the Mariners look at that and they're like, hey, for one game, whatever. with Nottingham. It's not a big deal. We don't want to, you know, take Harry out of his, out of his routine and out of his rhythm. Or they could go the other way and be like,
Starting point is 00:23:41 let's just get Harry Ford up here. Give him the big league experience, his debut and all that stuff. And then, you know, we could always just send him back down. Like, as long as you're communicating with the player, a short-term call-up is not anything.
Starting point is 00:23:53 And the player is always going to take the call-up, always. Like, they're always going to be excited about it. So, yeah, it really is kind of this weird thing. I would venture, to say that I think unless Ford is an absolute disaster in Tacoma, and he like gets
Starting point is 00:24:09 demoted because he's that bad. I think we probably do see him at some point. As for whether or not that's catching, I don't know because we know he's a good athlete. We know he can move around. So he might get some time in the outfield for all we know. It depends on the health of the two guys
Starting point is 00:24:25 at the major league level. It depends on if Garver is good. And they want to give him more DH time. Because I think, again, like if Garver hits enough where it's like, okay, we need to get this guy in the lineup consistently. And they probably do need to call up a backup catcher. So eventually that could be Ford, but for the meantime, it could be Blake Hunt as well. Yeah, exactly.
Starting point is 00:24:48 So, yeah, and Hunt's already on the 40, man. So, yeah, I think, I think what's likely to is that Ford is going to have to earn his promotion. I don't think they're going to promote him as just like, well, we don't really have, you know, any other option. I think they'd rather just roll with with Hunts or Nottingham or Raposo than, you know, basically gift wrap a call up to somebody. Because again, I don't know that Harry Ford actually earned a promotion to AAA based on the year he had last year. So now, Harry's gotten to play quite a bit in the spring.
Starting point is 00:25:26 It looks pretty comfortable at the plate and behind the plate. And so, you know, you never know what type of growth happened in the offseason. And as we say all the time with Harry 40 is what 22, 22. And like we talked about when we were when we discussed him doing our prospect rankings, maybe the call up to Tacoma, if that is what winds up happening. I'm pretty sure that's what Jerry DePoto said on Joe Doyle's show a couple of weeks ago. Maybe that's a confidence related thing, right? That Arkansas ballpark, it's tough on right-handed hitters,
Starting point is 00:25:59 especially when it comes to hitting for power. Harry obviously didn't hit for really any power last year. That was the biggest problem. PCL's different, right? He should be able to put the ball over the wall in Tacoma. Yeah, the pitching's better, though, in Tacoma. There is a gap there. But yeah, we'll see.
Starting point is 00:26:18 I mean, I think any time before the All-Star Break really is out of the question. I think if 40 is called up, it's going to be in August or September. unless you know disaster strikes and three catchers are injured all of a sudden then you might not have a choice but or what if he just like explodes in Tacoma yeah I mean that's possible again the nice thing about harry ford is that he doesn't have to catch now what would be you know what what we would like to see or what I would like to see at least is can we move Harry Ford around a little bit right now Now can you get a start in the outfield? Now I understand, you know, starting outfield in the Arizona in the Cactus League, very difficult.
Starting point is 00:27:06 The, you know, the skies are high. It's very hard. It's the sun's right in your eyes for most of the game. I understand it. So maybe you don't want to do it in Arizona, in Peoria. Can we see that a little bit in Tacoma then? Can we see him play some left field? Can we see him play some third base on top of catching a little bit here and there?
Starting point is 00:27:25 Like, because I would like that to be an option for him. I don't want the first time to, I don't want the first time for him playing right field to be at team mobile park. You know what I mean? So, yeah, Ford is interesting. I, if I had to bet, you know, over under half a game, him being on the Mariners roster this year, I think I'll take the over. Okay. I don't know if it'll be as a catcher, at least, you know, when he makes his debut. So yeah, it's a tough.
Starting point is 00:27:58 It's a big year for Harry Ford. And it's definitely a guy I'm going to be tracking all year down there in Tacoma. And I hope he does hit his way to the Amaris because he is incredibly easy dude to root for. Yeah. Do you have any thoughts on Blake Hunt at all? You know, kind of Tom Murphy. That's kind of our go-to. He's pretty good defensively, which is nice.
Starting point is 00:28:22 And he's got some power. probably should only hit against lefties. And he was good in Tacoma last year before he got traded to Baltimore. And then his season. Baltimore, they just don't know how to develop catchers. I mean, it's crazy.
Starting point is 00:28:35 So the Mariners very good at the very topical in this episode. Yeah, it is. Mariners very good at developing catchers. So, yeah, I think what could have Adley Rutchman's career look like if he just signed that deal?
Starting point is 00:28:48 I'm in the 40th round with the 40th round pick. Yeah. But yeah. So Hunt would be the guy I would assume would get the first call up. You know, if it, if it, April, May, June, I assume Hunt would be the guy. Assuming that he is also not, you know, putting up a 45 WRC plus or whatever he did in the Orioles organization. So, yeah, I think Kerry's got to jump a couple people. And he's really got to produce, I think, to see the big leagues this year.
Starting point is 00:29:18 Yeah. But you never know. Catcher is a fickle position. well there you have it folks that's our catcher preview for 2025 um moral of this episode cow raleigh really good at baseball Mitch garver pretty good in odd years we'll see if that continues in 2025 hopefully it does and then we'll we'll see about harry ford and and blake hunt over the course of the year so thank you so much for joining us here on the locked on mariners podcast for colby pat node i'm tiding gonzalus be sure to give us a follow on
