The more of the Mariners struggle, the higher the demand gets for Colt Emerson's debut.
But it's possible they could call up a different prospect before him.
We'll tell you who that is.
And more coming up here on the Locktime Marrists podcast.
Colby, hit it.
You are Locked on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Ahoy, Sailors.
It is Thursday, April 9th, 2026.
My name is Taddy Gonzalez.
And I'm joined as always by my co-oist Colby Patneau.
Today's episode is brought to you by Fandul.
Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $250 in bonus bets.
If your first bet wins, head to FanDuel.com to get started.
And on today's show, we're going to talk a lot about roster moves.
We'll discuss if there's another prospect other than Colt Emerson,
who could get the call to the majors pretty soon.
We'll also go over the winner of our top 58 Mariners moments tournament.
We're going to start with the roster move that led to disaster.
And yesterday's 3-0-0-lossed for the Mariners down in 10.
Texas. Victor Robles landed on the IL shortly before the game with a right peck strain,
something that he suffered on Tuesday during pregame warmups.
Connor Joe gets the call as a result, and he wound up playing first base for Josh Nailer.
And of course, it was not a very good debut for Connor Joe.
He hits into an inning double play.
and then airmails that ball on what would have been a forceout at home,
which leads to two runs being scored by the Rangers
and Brian Wu's afternoon coming to an abrupt end.
So we don't know how severe Robles's injury is.
We don't know how long it's going to take for him to get back into the fold here.
But I'm curious, especially after how poor yesterday went for Joe,
how long do you think Joe's going to be around, Colby?
well i mean first of all tie he had one of the hardest hitballs of the day yesterday it was just you know
two hopper right to cori seger um so for the double play uh yeah it it's it's a bit of a mystery because
honestly i'm a little surprised that joe was the one they called up uh because patrick wisdom
is destroying triple a and now granted patrick wisdom is like the player you build to destroy triple a
who probably can't really compete at the major league level any longer.
But whatever, he's hitting the ball.
I think he's got seven home runs down in AAA right now.
And, you know, he can also play first base.
He has done it a lot down in AAA as well.
And so you can also play third base.
And Joe, I'm guessing was the call yesterday because of the outfield experience that he has,
that wisdom doesn't.
And since Robles is an outfielder, well, you know.
but Joe played first yesterday.
And like you're not going to platoon at first base.
You're not going to bench Josh Naylor against lefties.
Yesterday was just a day off.
So I don't know if this was just like,
hey, we wanted to give Josh a day off anyways.
Let's go get Joe just in case we need an outfielder later.
And then we can kind of reassess after the off day.
Or if he's just the Robles replacement,
I think, you know, it'll be interesting to see because like,
is the Robles replacement is his main.
objective to hit against left-handed pitching or is it to be the other parts of Victor's profile,
which is a really good base runner and, you know, a good defender.
And Joe is neither of those things, although to be fair, neither is Patrick Wisdom.
But they are both right-handed hitters.
So somebody like Rylan Thomas, who is a good base runner and does play some pretty good defense,
he's a left-handed hitter.
So it does kind of feel like they were looking specifically for a right-handed hitting outfielder.
Yeah.
And then they just happen.
Well, Joe can also play first.
so we can still give Naylor a day off.
But I don't know if Joe's going to be here tomorrow.
You know, it kind of sucks.
You know, you have one bad game and you get sent down
or you get DFA in Joe's case because I'm pretty sure he's out of options.
No, I think he's still eligible to get sent down.
Okay.
Because I know at five years of service time, you can also decline.
He doesn't have five years.
He has four.
Okay.
And he's got one option left.
Okay.
So they can send him down.
So, yeah, I'm not sure they want to do that.
that they do have other spots in the 40 man they can clear it's not like there's a 40 man crunch as of yet for for the mariners uh so yeah i'm not really sure of this was just a one day let's get him up here because we want somebody to play first base who also could play the outfield that we really need to but like also
rob ruff snider could probably play first base luke raley can play first base and probably not be any worse than con or joe i mean say what you want about luke rale he can throw the ball 45 feet with some action
accuracy.
I mean, it kind of does that like shock put motion, but sure.
Would have been a better throw than what we got yesterday.
It might have been a different ballgame.
But yeah, I don't know if Joe's going to be up for the long term or for the long term.
I mean, like for the duration of, you know, Robles's injury, at least the first part.
Yeah.
Because he could easily just be sent down tomorrow and they could go with Patrick Wisdom or I guess Rylan Thomas,
depending on if they want to do more of the bench stuff or they want to do more of the
platoon stuff with Robles's replacement.
And like you said, we don't know how long Robles is going to be out.
It's a peck injury.
Those could kind of go either way.
So depending on the severity of it, I mean, Brian Bliss last year, the first injury was the peck injury.
So we saw how long that took him.
But anything, shoulders, you know, anything that you use, top half the your swing is going to be troubling.
So I don't know.
Maybe Victor's only out 10 days.
Maybe it is just Joe for 10 days.
But if it's any longer than that, I do wonder maybe the Mariners.
look to replace different aspects of what they were hoping to get out of roadroads rather than just the right-handed bat.
Look, what is this team's biggest issue outside of, you know, being, you know, not being able to hit the baseball with any sort of consistency?
Defense.
Yeah.
I feel like the move here should have been Rylan Thomas.
So maybe it is tomorrow.
And like, I get it.
Like, he's another left-handed bat, whatever.
But, like, you treat him how we thought maybe they were going to win to treat Robles as a true.
you know, fourth, fifth outfielder who just comes in as a late game defensive replacement
or as a pinch runner.
Because like Thomas is going to give you value that way.
Like he's a very, very good defender.
And so, you know, like late in games, if I'm actually, you know, if I actually scored enough
runs to, you know, hopefully have a lead late in the game.
Imagine that.
What a novel concept that would be.
That would, that would be a pretty valuable asset instead of, you know.
Protect a lead.
What?
You know, hoping that, you know, Luke Rayleigh, who has clearly regressed defensively, you know, Dominic Kandzone, Rob Reff Snyder.
I know Ruff Snyder had the great catch yesterday, but like, instead of relying on one of those guys out in a corner, I could have Rylan Thomas out there.
Like, yeah, I'd much rather have been.
You don't necessarily need an outfielder because, like, isn't that part of the value of Brennan Donovan?
They're like, yeah, I'll just throw Donovan out there.
So I just need, maybe it's just a right-handed hitting infielder.
So maybe it is Patrick Wisdom.
and it's like, oh, I have to move some things around
because of some, you know,
Dan Wilson's special pinch hitting games that he played.
Now he needs an outfielder.
Oh, well, I'll just put Donovan out there
and Wisdom can play third.
So, yeah, I don't know if Joe's the long-term piece here
or even the short-term piece, really.
It might have just been Joe yesterday, like,
because you were facing a lefty.
So maybe the biggest part of this roster move, though,
was sending or moving Carlos Vargas to the,
60 day IL with his
latch strain.
You know, we weren't sure how serious that was,
but that seems to signify that it's pretty serious.
Like he's not going to pitch for a while.
And, uh,
that's,
that's a bummer.
Like players pick him right.
Yeah.
I,
I'm going to go out on a limb here.
And this is admittedly a very,
you know,
frail limb and say,
we may have seen Carlos Vargas throw his last pitch as a mariner.
Is that a ball?
options. He is out of options. And if Wilcox keeps throwing the ball like he has been, I mean,
he was getting ready to pitch in a one run game yesterday again. Like Legamina has been fine,
although we're there of Vargas and Legamina, but if Vargas isn't healthy, blah, blah, blah. So,
yeah, we might have seen the last of Carlos Vargas. And some people are going to celebrate that,
but the dude was actually, you know, useful last year and filled a lot of roles for you. So,
just because it's potentially replaceable, doesn't necessarily.
mean that like yay the guy who gave up that one home run I remember is gone minus you know I'll forget
the other 60 innings where he was really good and just remember the the eight innings where he was
terrible like there's value to having that both in depth and Vargas already on the 60 and it's a lot so
it's you know it just you kind of can build a narrative where this ends up being a setback and then
a surgery and then after that he's out of options and do you want to carry him on the 40 all winter
blah, blah, blah.
So yeah, it stinks.
It does stink for Vargas for sure.
But from a 2026 perspective,
Cole Wilcox has come up and pitched very, very well.
So, I mean, kind of replaced them seamlessly.
All right.
So the more of the marriage struggle,
no surprise here,
the higher the demand for Colt Emerson's debut gets.
But there's another prospect.
If you're watching, you already know who it is.
But for those of you listening on audio,
we'll tell you who that is,
who Colby thinks could get the call up before Emerson
in just a moment.
But first, a reminder,

getting their stuff together, right? But there are also some other ways that could help push
the Mariners in the right direction. And we'll fix everything, but it could help some things, right?
And so a suggestion for that that you made to me last night
We had Tex Colby was Rock Rodden.
It was down in AAA right now.
Now the offensive numbers for Rodden, not pretty.
268 with a 273 on base.
It's a 415 slug, though.
He's hit for six doubles.
But it's a 41% K-ray, just a 2.3% walk rate.
But Rodden is a switch hitter, so brings a unique element there.
and he's a very good defender.
Former Gold Glove winner down on the minors can play multiple positions.
Right now he's been playing a lot of outfield.
So I assume that's kind of where you see the value and rotten.
So what do you like about that overall?
Well, you know, like we talked about in the last segment,
what is it that you want Victor Robles' replacement to provide?
Is it the offense?
Well, I mean, Victor really not much of an offensive spark plug to begin with.
so I don't know why you're desperate to replace that.
Or is it the defense and the base running and the things that a player can do late in the game in those situational moments that could tip the scales, particularly of a low-scoring game?
Have the Mariners been playing a lot of low-scoring games lately?
Yeah, yeah, they have.
And Rodden is, again, I don't think there's anything super special about Rodden.
He's going to be 26 here in about, I don't know, seven, eight weeks now.
So it's not like he's a young prospect.
He's not an elite prospect or anything like that.
He's a, you know, in the Mariners system right now, he's a top 20-ish guy,
but in general he's more of probably a top 30, like fringe guy.
But he does do a lot of things well, including play really good defense,
particularly in the infield, he steals bases.
He's a very good runner.
He's got pop, you know, and right now he's, he has, I think, seven doubles down in AAA.
He's a switch hitter.
So he can be used against both lefties and varieties.
And even though he's mostly played infield,
so far in his career. He's playing outfield now in Tacoma. I don't think that's an accident. I don't think
that's a, you know, just like, hey, let's just try and get this guy in the lineups. I think they're
actually trying to, you know, make him the new Dillamore. I think is what the Mariners would like
Brock Rodden to be. And he's a AAA right now. He's pretty close. Again, is he going to change
the trajectory of your offense? No, only Calhulio and Josh can do that. Those are the three.
nobody else, including Colt Emerson, by the way, they can't change this thing.
It has to come from those three guys.
But can Ron help you?
Can he, you know, be a pinch runner?
Can he, you know, I don't know, get a bunt down if you're a big bunt fan?
Can he come in and play really good defense?
So maybe he comes in.
He plays third base defense so you can put Donovan out in left field and take Randy out of the game in the eighth inning when you're up by two.
I mean, try and have a lead after seven.
And I know novel concept, but it's just one of those things where it's like, look, what is the value of Connor Joe versus Brock Rotten?
Connor Joe hit pretty well in 2023, but he doesn't play defense.
We know that from yesterday.
He doesn't run particularly well.
Like how is that valuable, more valuable than somebody like Brock Rodden who can run, who can, you know, play multiple positions who can play really well, really good defense at multiple.
positions. I don't think there is much of a difference there offensively. And so defensively and
base running wise, there's a huge difference. So I think maybe Rodden is a guy who could help you more
than somebody like Connor Joe. And because he's a switch hitter, I think the Mariners care enough
about having the right-handed element on their bench. I think that probably gives him an edge over
someone like Ryland Thomas, even though Thomas is probably much more likely to help you offensively.
he's a lefty and the Mariners seem to really want a righty
who can play the outfield on their bench right now.
Yeah, it's just, you know, with Joe,
you're sacrificing more defense,
more base running value,
which you've already sacrificed in a lot of regards
for a very low percentage shot at offense production
when you consider, you know, his track record.
So I just, I don't really see much of value here
and Joe compared to some of the other options.
here, whether that be a Rylan Thomas, whether that be, you know, a Brock Rodden, even.
So, yeah, I mean, if Rodden's a zero at the plate, okay, at the very least, I feel better
about him giving me something defensively and something on the base pass than a Connor Joe.
And I also kind of feel like Connor Joe is going to be a zero at the plate.
Or at the very least, I feel like maybe the uptick in offense from Joe isn't going to be
significant enough from Rodden to make up the difference that Rodden brings to the table
defensively, right? Or Bryland Thomas, right? You know, any of these guys. Sure. Yeah, so
yeah, I'm on board with that, you know, like we talked about in the first segment. Like,
I just, I don't think Connor Joe is a particularly good fit for what this roster needs right now.
I mean, there are just better fits, too, because if you just want the right-handed hitter who can hit left-handed pitching, which we
don't know if Joe can. He hasn't really been relevant since
2023. Patrick
Wisdom is destroying AAA right now.
And he can also play third base and first base.
But it seems like they want somebody who can play the outfield.
And it's like, okay, well, outfield defense is important.
Then Rylan Thomas should be the guy.
I mean, Brennan Davis, maybe if he hadn't gotten hurt at the end of the year last
year, or at the end of spring camp, I should say.
Maybe he gets that opportunity.
But right now he's kind of not quite restarting his spring training, but he's a little
bit behind.
So going to Joe over him, I guess makes some sense in that regard.
But like it just feels weird that like Joe is the one they chose to call up because pretty
much however you want to look at Connor Joe and what he brings to the table, I feel like
there's somebody else to AAA who does that particular skill better than Connor Joe currently
does.
So I know it sounds like we're picking on Connor Joe like whatever he had a bad game.
That's going to happen.
And Joe's had a very nice major league career.
But it's been a while since he's been anything.
at the big league level.
And the Mariners could kind of use a spark,
but I don't want to use Colt Emerson.
I don't want to use the Mariners needing a spark
as a reason to push Colt Emerson to the majors
before the Mariners think he's ready.
I think that's stupid.
So I want to talk about that real quick.
So do I really care at the end?
No, because like if they call up Colt Emerson,
like that's going to be fun.
It would be cool.
Sure.
It just,
it does feel like if they call them up,
it's not going to be on their terms.
Right.
And so that's a bit of a problem.
And then there's the element of taking playing time away from.
And again, I know it's been very bad offensively for this team.
They're the worst offense in all of baseball.
But there's the element of taking away playing time from guys that I don't think deserve that just yet
because it's only been 13 games in the grand scheme of things.
Because you got to play cold every day.
You call him up.
He's got to play every day.
He's got to be part of this.
thing, you know, until he proves otherwise, right? Unless he proves otherwise. Hopefully not, right?
Hopefully he sticks around the whole time. But, but yeah, I just, so there's like a couple of issues
with that. Are they enough for me to be like, no, don't call them up now. Like, if you want to call
them up right now, sure, like, fine. I don't like the idea of putting, like, a savior title on Colt
Emerson at 20 years old.
That's in and so that's the other thing, right?
So he's already kind of got and we talked about this when he signed the extension that at
least when he signed the contract, they kept him down in AAA.
You know, it's not like some of these other guys who get the contract and then it's like,
all right, kid, now you got to start living up to that money right out of the gate.
Right.
But still, there's there's some added pressure now because he's he's making money.
And now it's like, all right, well, this whole team is a disaster right now.
And, you know, we got World Series aspirations.
we're falling well short of them right out of the game.
We need you to fix the vibes.
Like that's even more unnecessary pressure on.
Again, a 20-year-old, and there's already questions about how is a 20-year-old going to adapt to the majors, you know, right away.
I mean, yeah, there's no one-size-fits-all either because, like, Connor Griffin came up and he has one hit, and it was his first career up at.
He hasn't been very good since.
And McGonigal on the other end has been very good.
And so we don't know what you're going to get from Colt.
the idea that you'll just call up Emerson and he'll help fix the offense.
I mean, the rest of that sentence is you hope.
I think the part that I see that that makes me chuckle the most.
And I'm not saying it doesn't make sense to some degree.
But like people want Emerson up, right, which means they need to take at-bats away from somebody.
And the people that, you know, or the players that the fans seem most willing to take at bats away from are two guys that are actually kind of hitting a little bit.
And Luke Rayleigh and Dom Kanzone.
I tweeted about this last night
Yeah, because like you know
So yeah, it's just it's like those are
I mean I'm not saying they've been great this year
But yeah
Like I just like look I'm
I don't necessarily disagree with the notion of like
Not letting Dominic Canzone or Luke Rayleigh get in the way of calling up
Cole Emerson
But it is funny to be like all right
So how do we get Cole Emerson you know playing time every day?
Well you take out Luke Rayley or Dominic Canzon
It's like two those two
guys are like two of the five guys on your team that have a WRC plus north of a hundred and look I get
you know Dom's two homers on opening day are doing the heavy lifting there but so it's just again
it's funny how like we're looking for offense what's the solution here let's take out the two
two of the most predictive guys right so it's just it's not as clean of a fit as people would
want and again I really hate the idea of just being like well we're four or nine
We have World Series aspirations.
We're off to a terrible start.
We can't hit our three superstars, well, our two superstars and our All Star First
Baseman are really struggling.
They can't hit water.
They fell out of a boat right now.
You know what we need?
We need a 20-year-old kid from Columbus, Ohio, or not even Columbus, from whatever, from
John Glenn High School, who was playing, you know, in the 4A Ohio division three years ago.
We need that guy to come up and save us because our star, our star, our star,
cars can't hit. I think that's unnecessary pressure. I don't think it's fair to Cole Demerson.
And I don't think right now I'm at a position where I would say Emerson actually gives you a
better shot to win than the nine guys that you run out there against Redis. Maybe he is.
I mean, he's certainly off to a nice start at AAA. He's not destroying the league, but he's off to
a really nice start. And I think Emerson will be fine at the big league level. But like, we know he's
not going to start over J.P. Crawford. So you can stop, you could just stop with that idea right now.
Cole Young is one of the other guys who's actually producing.
You're not taking him out of the lineup.
And obviously, Donovan, you know, you're not taking him out of the lineup either.
So you have to take that, you have to take the app bats away from somebody.
And it's going to be, it's going to be Can's own or Rayleigh, probably Can's own because
Rayleigh doesn't have any options left.
Yeah.
And it's just like, okay, cool.
So you've replaced one of your decent hitters with a guy you hope is a decent hitter.
For what?
that's if you can live up to all the hype and that's if you can handle all the pressure of being called up and being looked at and be like, hey, yeah, by the way, you have to hit right away because our really good players kind of suck right now.
I just, I don't like the idea.
It's completely different from from 2021 where they called up Logan and Kelnick.
Because it's like, look, those guys, no, there were no expectations in 2021, none.
Yeah. And even then, they had Kelnick hit lead off right in game one or two of his career.
It's like, that's been in the omered.
second game.
But yeah, just kind of one of those things where it's like, the expectations are so much
higher now.
And I just don't love the idea of putting the pressure on a kid to be like, save us.
You're our only hope when it's like, uh, how about no?
Yeah.
I don't think now is the right time to call a cold.
If they do it, I'll be very excited.
But to do it to like change the vibes or like to inject some energy into the clubhouse.
13 games into the year.
I think that's just more desperate than it is anything else.
And I think that would actually be a very bad sign.
So we'll see what they do.
My guess is he's not getting called up anytime soon.
I think the Mariners are going to stay the course here with it.
So, you know, it's up to the guys currently on this roster to figure it out.
So our top 50 Mariners Moments Tournament is officially over.
We'll unveil the winner.
Not a surprise there, but we'll unveil the winner.

So it's kind of been a mess of a week recording-wise.
So we were supposed to get to this a lot earlier than we ultimately are.
But our top 50 Mariners Moments Tournament has officially come to a close,
well, came to a close a few days ago.
We have a winner, finally.
So Colby, what is, according to our listeners, the best moment in Marriors history?
The Twitter poll was about 5545 in favor of the double.
Our Google form poll was a little bit closer than that, 51.7 to 48.3 in favor for the double.
When you add it all up, the double wins at about 52 and a half percent, which means it won 264 to 235.
So 30 vote difference out of 500 between the two.
So really no surprise.
The double still reigns supreme amongst at least, you know, the people who voted.
in this poll, but probably pretty much all of Mariners fandom, I think would probably back that.
So I think this is a good sample.
I'm not surprised by the result.
I'm a little surprised it was as close as it was.
That's, you know, I thought it'd be more of a 60-40 type of thing here.
But yeah, in general, not that surprise.
The double was the number one overall seed for a reason.
And it still is like the most significant moment in Mariners history, at least according
to you guys and I think most people would probably agree.
It doesn't surprise me that much.
I mean,
our demographic does skew younger.
So I did feel like maybe that gave Cal a shot here.
But overall, yeah,
it's not that much of a surprise here.
I mean, it was our number one overall seed for a reason.
It's the double.
It's the call that goes along with it.
It's Edgar.
It's Griffey sliding into home.
It's the celebration.
It's the iconography of that image of Griffey at the bottom of the dog pile.
It's still all over the ballpark.
It's still all anybody talks about.
Like, that's the only thing that's ever happened in the history of the Seattle Mariners.
Whatever.
But yeah, I guess you got to win a World Series to knock that off the top of the list, which, yeah, honestly seems fair.
So, yeah.
Yeah, I am curious if the Mariners had advanced to the World Series last year, would.
Would there have been a moment in the playoff run that would have, you know, finally been able to beat the double?
Like would Polos walk off in the 15th?
Would that have beat the double because it led directly to them going to the World Series?
Geno's Game 5 Grand Slam.
They had one game six or game seven.
Would that have been the moment that, you know, kind of profound it passed the double?
Let's talk about like how Game 7 was going.
Let's say Bizarro gets out of that, right?
Unscath.
and they win three to one, right?
Right.
Or three to two, whatever.
Whatever, they win.
Yeah.
You know, that game pretty much goes on the track that it was going along.
They get the last eight outs before they give up two runs.
They don't score any one.
There's not like the Blue Jays tied up and the Mariners win it in the 12th.
Does the final pitch of that game just because it's the one that sent them to the World Series?
Does that beat out Eggers double?
Probably.
I think because I mean, it's literally just best moment in Mariners history.
Mariners go to their first World Series.
Yeah.
Like, and then obviously if they win it, that's the number one.
And then them going is probably number two.
But yeah, it does appear like in order for any Mariner moment to finally knock off the double,
it's going to require a trip to the World Series, which, you know, is a bit weird, but also not that.
I mean, when you're in the cult of the Seattle Mariners,
you have to worship at the altar of the double because,
I mean,
in all seriousness,
it combines like the three most important mariners in franchise history.
Griffey scores the winning run.
Edgar hits the double.
Neathouse makes the call.
Like,
just that imagery right there,
just that trio right there,
all being involved in a huge way,
Joey Corr or whatever.
One of these things doesn't belong.
By the way,
Alex Rodriguez is on deck.
So like it's just one of those things where it's it has pretty much everything the iconic call the two superstars like the biggest superstar to ever play for your franchise the most important player to ever play for your franchise all of it can find I'm not all that surprised that it won.
So and I'm not surprised that it does seem like it would take a trip to the world series to
Yeah push that down the list a little bit but you know Cal's rainmaker the drought enter they got pretty close it got respectfully close. So
So yeah, it would be interesting to go back and look and kind of rank the top 50.
Like instead of doing a bracket style, if we did like rank these 50 moments and see where everybody rank.
Because obviously sometimes, you know, the moment you would rank number two doesn't get to the finals because they were the three seed and they had to play so and so.
You know, so it'd be interesting to see how like the vote totals all go.
But yeah, I do think, you know, no big surprises.
actually the biggest surprise was that in every round,
except for the final four,
we had matchups that were decided by, you know,
five points or less.
Bang, bang, bang.
That would be the sound of the Houston Astros coming to town.
We will talk about that on tomorrow's episode.
But for now, that's going to do it for our show.
