Luis Castillo's struggles are becoming harder to ignore.
And while we've been firm in saying the mayors won't do anything about him anytime soon,
there's obviously a difference between what they will do and what they should do.
So what should they do?
We'll answer that and more coming up.
Colby, hit it.
You are Locked on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Ahoy, Sailors.
It is Tuesday, April 28th, 2020.
My name is Tiding Gazzolson.
I'm joined as always by my co-coast Colby Patnode.
And on today's show, we're going to open up the mailbag
and answer some of your marriage questions,
starting with Dangeross 74,
who wants to know when Bryce Miller gets back,
can they put Luis Castillo on the injured list for a while?
So obviously, after how things went last night,
we got a billion questions about Luis Castillo.
I just so happy to pick this one,
but we're going to answer basically everything across the board.
here. So first and foremost, thank you for your question. But yeah, it's been it's been bad for
Louise. Obviously last night gives up seven and five innings. Marys lose 11 to four to kick
off their series down in Minneapolis. That's the second time in four starts now for Castillo
that he's given up seven. And outside of his fantastic start to open up the season against the
Yankees, it's been rough. It's been a rough watch, even in some of the games where he hasn't given
up a ton of runs.
There's a couple of games here where he hasn't even been able to finish four.
And he hasn't gone any deeper than five and a third.
So it's been a problem.
But like I said in the cold open, Colby, you know,
we've been very firm that the marries are not,
are probably not going to do anything about Castillo anytime soon.
Yet this has added even more fuel to the fire that is really the biggest conversation
around this club right now, which is what happens with this rotation once Bryce Miller returns.
And obviously, Emerson Hancock has just been objectively better than Castillo so far to start the
year. Even with some of the issues that we've talked about over his last couple starts, some of the
issues with the arm angle and how we feel that's impacting how the games have gone for him, the deeper
that he gets into his starts and how the sweeper control has faded and the fastball command has faded over the
course of these starts, he's still found ways to just straight up produce better than
than Castillo has so far. Simple as that. But this is obviously a very complex situation,
regardless of what I or anyone else thinks here, right? Regardless of whether or not it's valid
to have this conversation, the Mariners are not going to make a quick decision. This is not
going to be a straightforward thing for the Mariners. But the standard is higher, or it should be
higher, right? You almost made the World Series last year for the first time. You're eight outs away
from doing so. You know, you have all these expectations going into this season. And in order
to maintain that standard, you have to make difficult decisions sometimes. And this would obviously
be a very difficult decision for the Mariners organization because of the money involved,
because he's a veteran. He's a guy that you've won a lot of ball games with. And because,
you know, you're probably not going to be able to trade him. They're definitely not going to
release them. You know, obviously we can get on here and be like, well, it's not our money.
Yeah, they should release them. You know, if it gets to that point, right? But that's not going to
happen. So what's the point in having that conversation? Right. And so that leads me to the thing
that I'm most uncertain about here. And I'm uncertain about a lot with this, this whole thing.
And this goes back to the question that was asked by Danger Ross. I don't know what the
marines ultimately do with castio if they do come to a conclusion that they have to do something right i know an iL
stent has been thrown out phantom or otherwise there's the idea of moving him to the bullpen but options are
very limited here for the marries if they do want to do something about castillo sometime down the road
yeah they're in a tough spot more or less right i mean they we know they're not going to dfam
they're not going to release him and the mariners have been
very consistent in this and that guys who have a track record, guys who have performed for them in the
past are going to get a very long leash. And roughly so, because we talk about, you know,
hey, the Mariners almost made the World Series last year, so expectations are higher. That's true.
And one of the biggest reasons you almost made the World Series last year is because Luis Castillo
was the one guy who was, you know, consistent and stabilized the rotation, didn't get hurt last year.
So there's a tremendous amount of respect for Luis. And so the whole phantom out
IL thing, you're not going to do that to Luis
unless he signs off on it.
Not to mention if he doesn't
and you do it anyways, he's going to file a grievance
with the Players Association
and you have this looming lockout coming up
and players are going to be very upset
at teams that they view as not player friendly,
you know, and all that.
So there's just a bigger headache to putting him on the IL
if he doesn't need to be on the IL.
So you have to be, you know,
very clear with Luis that, you know,
this is what we want to do and this is what it is.
Now, Luis has got a ton of
mileage on his arm. So it is possible there are a legitimate IL stint to be had at some point this
year. But you're not just going to be like, hey, yeah, we're just going to put you on the 15-day
IL and you're going to miss a couple starts. And we'll just say that you like, you know,
hamstring strain or whatever. Like if Luis isn't down for that, you're in trouble. And that's
going to get out. Of course it's going to get out. So you have to be very careful with that.
It's not just snap your fingers. He's on the IL.
You're going to burn a lot of bridges, not just with Luis.
It's who cares. You just burn Luis.
No, it's going to be his agent.
It's going to be other players in that clubhouse.
Like, you're going to set a very dangerous precedent if you put him on the IL without his consent if he doesn't have an actual injury that requires an IL stint.
So you can't just snap your fingers and say phantom IL.
That's not really a thing.
It's not as easy as people want it to be.
The bullpen, I don't know if that helps them at all.
I don't know if it helps the Mariners at all either, to be honest with you.
So I think Luis is going to need to struggle for, you know, another five starts or so before this gets any kind of serious look.
And, you know, Luis, it's worth noting, has had these stretches before just last year in August.
He was terrible.
He had an ERA over 10.
And then his final four starts, he had an ERA under two.
And in the previous 20 starts before that, those, you know, 10 starts right there, he had an ERA at like 3.1.
like Luis he does this right a lot of pitchers do he's no longer the dominant you know ace type of pitcher
that he used to be we all know that we all understand that we don't need him to be but we need
him to be better than this so the mares are just in a really tough spot with him i mean it's
really easy to sit here and say like oh well just put him in the bullpen just put him on the iL
it's not that easy it's really not and you know you have to have nuance you have to have
some form of tact when you're discussing this type of thing
because there are other ramifications for the move you make with Luis Castillo.
So, yeah, they're in a bit of a tight spot.
They really need Luis to pitch better.
You know, at the very least, they need him to not, you know,
torpedo any chance they have to win a game every single time he goes out there.
Like, he's only going to go five.
He needs to find a way to give up three or four, not seven.
give this off chance to work, and that should be manageable.
So we'll see what it is with Luis.
It's really tough to say.
It does kind of remind me of watching Felix towards the end of his career
where everybody in the world knows that he needs to make some kind of change,
and Felix either wouldn't or just couldn't make that change,
and we just saw him slowly deteriorate into one of the worst pitchers in Major League Baseball.
I don't think Luis is there, but he's kind of in that, like,
2016, 2017-Feelex mode where he's slowly dipping a little bit.
every year and a change needs to be made.
And Luis, he's the only guy who comes in every offseason, doesn't really change
his arsenal, right?
He doesn't really add new pitches.
He doesn't really make tweaks in his delivery or anything like that.
He just kind of does what he does.
And it's been very, very successful.
Yeah.
But right now, it's not.
And because it's happened before, I think the merits are going to give him a little
more runway to fix these things.
And because of his track record, they'll give him more runway to figure something out here.
But yeah, we are going to eventually get to a critical point where they're going to have to make a tough decision.
I don't see any good, you know, or any, like, positive outcomes that they could go with.
That is going to be okay with the player or the clubhouse and, you know, just the sure, the volume of respect that they have for Luis and everything he's met for the organization in a short time.
Like, it really isn't as simple as like, oh, you just DFA.
I'm, oh, you just put them on the eye.
like no no there there's nuance to this there there are caveats on caveats on caveats to this and
you got to be careful with it uh so hopefully louis just starts pitching better over his next
couple of outings uh and you know there there is evidence to suggest that he will but uh until you see
it until you see him do it i understand why it might be tough to assume that he can all right
we will answer more of your questions in just a moment but first a reminder of this episode of the

All right, Mitch wants to know what prospects have opened your eyes through the first month.
For me, I think Corbyn Dickerson is at the top of the list.
Corbin Dickerson is a good call.
He's had a really nice start to the year.
Still striking out quite a bit.
And obviously, that's a level at 22 years old where he should be having quite a bit of
success, but still really, really nice to see.
He's crushing it down there.
I would also say Mason Peters, who has, I think, 25 strikeouts and 14 innings so far to
start his professional career.
he's yeah he's he's he's he's a lot of fun you know we've talked about establishing that that middle
tier of marries prospect mason peters is off to a nice start in doing that uh luke stevenson in high a is
is crushing the baseball and uh he's probably getting moved up to double a here i'd imagine in
the next month or so i mean he's ready for that challenge now i think he's in a little bit of a
slide recently if i remember incorrectly so that might be a nice little way to you know you want to
get challenged and then you want to see him come out the other end before you move him up but
he's certainly you know performed very well um jackson steinsma you guys remember him he's the ninth
round pick the other year he's actually uh thrown a couple good quality outings out there as he
kind of tries to build back uh some of the value you know i know the numbers say great he's great
but he just hasn't looked very good and that's kate anderson i you know whof i mean yeah i mean i
know he just had another phenomenal start but the velocity is down like a tick so he doesn't look very
good, right Keith Law? That's what I'm
referencing, guys, if you guys don't know.
I saw the comment, yes.
Just real fast. Keith Law said
that Kate Anderson wasn't looking too good
after he struck out 11 guys in five innings.
So,
like what, two weeks ago? Yeah,
I'm thinking Keith hasn't seen
Kate Anderson pitch or hadn't seen a pitch
since the breakout game in spring
training. So it's actually like
Ryan Sloan, who hasn't looked particularly
great. He's been fine. He's been fine.
I mean, he's getting challenged in a
A as a, what, 19-year-old?
So, yeah, it's going to be affected.
But yeah, no, seriously, I think we all knew Katie Anderson was going to be good, but he's really good right now.
But here's kind of a blast from the past.
You remember right after the Mariners had traded a ton of their prospects and they graduated a lot more and they kind of had to rebuild the farm system again, we had a lot of hopes on a guy named Axel Sanchez to kind of be like, oh, this guy could pop.
And then they challenged him.
They put him up in Everett way too quick and he struggled.
And he just kind of went off the radar.
He has been exceptional this year, repeating the level, of course.
But yeah, he's definitely got loud tools and he's producing right now.
So Axel Sanchez is the guy who may find his way onto the top 30 again if he continues to play like this, even after the draft, which is the next time we'll update our top 30.
So actually probably post deadline, I would imagine.
But, yeah, he's got a good chance.
So Steinsma, Stevenson, Axel Sanchez.
Again, Kate Anderson, even though it's not a surprise.
Corbin Dickerson's a good one.
Josh Karen certainly has had moments where he's popped.
So, yeah, I mean, it's pretty good, Mason Peters, too.
It's a pretty good time in the Mariners minor league system right now.
There's a lot of fun players that are really producing.
And we're starting to see the quote unquote middle class starting to build up.
up Brockmore.
It looks like a big leader, you know, facing high school kids right now down in Everett.
So yeah, there are a lot of actually really good things happening down on the farm,
which is great to see.
And the Mariners middle class, the non-top 100 but still valuable prospects group, that
group is growing pretty quick.
Now, it's early.
So we can't say they're there yet.
But yeah, the Axel Sanchez is the Mason Peters, the Jackson Steinsma, you know, the Josh
Karen's, the Brockmore's, those guys are all building real value, which could come into play later this year, either, well, in some cases at the big league level, Brockmore or at the trade market.
So we'll see what happens.
But yeah, it's actually a really nice start for a lot of guys down on the farm.
Maris fan 22 wants to know when Donovan gets back, who gets sent down Wilson, Rivas or someone else be Will Wilson, I think.
Yeah, it should be Rivas, but it will be Will Wilson.
though I'm open to other moves as well
on top of you know swapping Donovan
or Wilson for Donovan for Donovan however you want to look at that
I would entertain Brennan Davis for Connor Joe
Davis is crushing it right now down in AAA
and obviously had the fantastic spring so
took him a couple weeks after he got shut down in spring training
to get back on track but now over the last seven to ten days
he's been obliterating baseball I think
he's got like seven home runs, eight home runs.
Yeah. And he wasn't doing anything, you know, in the first two weeks of the season.
So yeah, I could definitely see that coming soon.
Although, you know, I think they really like the Connor Joe veteran app bad element.
But hey, you know what?
You could send down Leo Rivas and Will Wilson if you want and call up Davis.
All right.
Next question here from Colin.
Assuming the Mariners played to their ability and we hit the trade deadline with a need for a high leverage arm,
what team do you personally hope loses out just to have a chance of trading for their arm?
I mean, this one is very simple, very obvious.
It's a certain team that, oh, right.
It's a certain team that maybe fired their,
their manager this morning.
That would be the Philadelphia Phillies who,
who woof.
It's,
it's been bad.
And there is a certain reliever who the Mariners may or may not have tried
very hard to trade for last,
last, last trade deadline,
who,
currently on the IL with an oblique thing
but I think he should be
healthy by the time the trade deadline rolls around
with these obliques. Yeah
but that would of course be
Yon Duran. So I think
assuming that he's able to get back
and the Phillies continue to play
similar to this
and the results remain
roughly the same
I think we're going to get a lot of fan fiction
Friday submissions about Yon
to Ron. Just a hunch.
Probably with Edmundo
Sosa or Alec Boehm thrown in there too.
Yeah.
The problem with that is
Dumbrowski is insane.
He is insane.
So maybe he's maybe you know,
because you want to give up you want to give up
Kate Anderson and Bryce Miller for a reliever because that's what he's going to ask for
because he is insane.
I will say this though about Dumbrosky.
You know, he's kind of a hard gun, right?
And maybe if this is, you know,
if this thing is just falling apart here in Philadelphia,
You know, maybe the writing is on the wall, the window is closing, and he's just like, screw it, whatever.
You want you to run?
Fine.
Here.
I mean, how about a team like the Kansas City Royals who traded for Matt Strom this winter?
And we know Strom is good against lefties and righties.
And I know the mayors don't like to have a third lefty, but you don't get to be picky, okay?
You're having to rely on Cole Wilcox and Alex Hoppy, who, by the way, looked pretty good until it all fell apart at the end.
there but yeah like you you
kind of need to add these guys to the bullpen
whether they're left handed or right handed
whatever uh so
maybe can't if I'm not mistaken didn't we
talk about this this off season isn't strong
better against righties and he's actually better against
he's still good against lefties but yeah he's actually
better against righties I guess I don't know how he's
this year though yeah yeah not this year
this year he's been way better against lefties and ready's but
I think career wise he's been
let's see here uh yeah
yeah yeah righties are sloshing
in his career slashing two 13
281 to 347 against them.
The Red Sox have some guys in the bullpen.
They're obviously a dumpster fire right now too.
The Mets, I don't know there's anybody in that bullpen that I'm particularly
enamored with.
You know, again, specifically bullpen.
Yeah, you're probably talking about the Phillies, but the whole Dumbrovsky element
of it is, I don't think it's likely.
But what do we say about Jerry?
apparently people don't like when we say it but you get as upset as you want about it it's true
jerry circles back uh people get upset when we say that you circle people in the discord do not like
when we say they circle you like they never circle back and it's like i mean okay
what i i they always circle back what i mean i we hear about them interested in the same
players every single summer so i whatever some people don't like when we say that but what
are you guys on in the discord they always
circle back what are you talking about horrie belanco anyone they try for like four years to get that guy
like what uh anyways so yeah uh there are there are a couple teams but uh the Phillies the Mets the Royals
those are definitely teams to look at here uh but yeah I think you're rooting hard for the Phillies
to crash because you know yeah Duran but also I kind of like a window salsa to be my utility guy
because he crushes left-handed pitching too by the way and he's
he's a rental too, so he shouldn't be too expensive.
But yeah, the Phillies, if you're looking specifically for bullpen arms,
Kirkering and Durran, Duron, Duran,
either one of those guys would be very nice.
All right.

Matthew wants to know what playoff contender that is off to a slow start is the most surprising
to you probably the Phillies yeah or the Mets
it's because they're the Mets it's kind of like the Mariners it's just like they're the Mets
so now I took the Red Sox to win the east so sam or I you took the anguish yeah yeah
that's right yeah the red socks is the wild card well
cardio. Yeah.
Garrett Crochet. I mean, this would be a phenomenal time to face Garrett Crochet.
Unfortunately, you'll probably face them right around the time we see Sy Young Garrett Crochet again.
Of course.
But I think I also picked the, can I pick the Phillies to win the East?
I either picked the Phillies or the Mets.
I remember saying I wanted to take the Braves, but I didn't trust their pitching.
And here are the Braves with the best record in baseball.
So did you, did one of us pick the Phillies to go as a world series?
I think, yeah, I think so.
I think you did.
I think you had Mariners Phillies.
I think had Mariners, Dodgers.
Maybe I had Mariners, whatever.
Either way, yeah, not great.
Pretty much the teams in the east.
I mean, yeah, yeah.
Although I also did pick Kansas City to win the Central.
That's not looking great at the moment.
Yeah, yeah, Kansas City.
I mean, like, you could also throw the Blue Jays and the Astros in there,
but at least with them, like, there's been major.
injuries. So it's like it's not a surprise why they're struggling. But like if you told me without
context at the start of the season, like, hey, the Astros are going to be one of the worst
teams of baseball to start the year. I'd be surprised by that. Yeah. I mean, the Mets had to go
without Juan Soto for most of this month. So I think I mean, the Phillies also lost Duran. But
yeah, I think we can go Phillies. It is probably the most surprising. It's Phillies or Red Sucks to me.
I thought the Red Sox were going to be really, really good this year.
I thought that pitching was going to be very good.
And, yeah, I mean, obviously everyone got fired and that seems like the vibes.
Yeah, but it seems like the vibes of the club else are bad.
So I don't know.
We'll see.
We'll see.
But yeah, I think I'll go Phillies.
All right.
Last question here from Max, who says,
I'm sure some might be thinking of putting Cole Young higher in the lineup,
but am I crazy for thinking that's a bad idea?
I love his bat at the bottom of the order.
it really makes it harder on opposing teams to get through the lineup.
Thoughts?
Yeah.
I mean,
you're not going to hit him two,
three or four or five for that matter.
So the highest you can move him up is sixth.
You're not going to hit him lead off,
not ahead of JP and not ahead of Donovan when he comes back,
at least not any time soon.
I mean, maybe,
I don't know,
August,
if you really need a lead off hitter and Cole Young's still hitting maybe then.
But right now, I mean,
the highest you can move him up realistically is what,
sixth?
And he's been hitting between seven and nine all year anyway.
So what's the point?
I just, I don't, you know, you'd have to move Canzone and Rayleigh down and all that to make that happen.
So no, I think you just leave him hitting eighth or ninth.
And, you know, he's kind of fulfilling or he's filling the JP role now that JP's trying to fill in for Donovan at the top of the lineup.
So, no, I think you just leave him where he's comfortable.
Just, you know, you don't want to put too much on his plate.
You don't want to change much of anything right now because he's swinging the bat very well.
and he's comfortable, you know, and so really there's no reason to push it.
I don't think he gives you that much more at the leadoff spot than JP,
certainly not more than Donovan when he gets healthy.
And then, yeah, I mean, you want to hit him second?
I don't really see the point of that.
The only thing.
Now Julio and Josh are starting to swing it.
The only thing that I would consider here would be having him hit lead off against
lefties specifically instead of Rough Snyder right now.
because again, he's crushing lefties.
Ref Snyder isn't.
So, and they obviously don't, they obviously don't want JP hitting lead off against lefties right now.
But even then, I'd probably hit Randy lead off against lefties if I was going to make a change.
So, no, I'm going to leave Cole Young where he is, let him be comfortable.
He's already, you know, playing every single day anyways.
So there's already a lot on his shoulders.
He doesn't have a platoon partner.
He's not getting days off.
So I think just, you know, leaving him be and letting him do his thing.
is what's best for the player.
And we could talk about this again in August and September
when you kind of have to do things that are more about the team than about the individual.
But I just doubt there's ever really a point where we look at Cole Young and be like,
it makes a ton of sense for him to be the lead-off guy.
Because I don't think you're hitting him two, three, four, or five, no matter what,
no matter how well he said.
He's just not the right bat for any of those spots.
There's just going to be better options.
So it's pretty much lead-off.
And if it's not going to be leadoff, then what's the point of moving them up at all?
It doesn't really make a lot of sense.
So, no, I think you leave him where he is.
All right, that is going to do it for our show.
