Cole Young made himself right at home and has returned to Pittsburgh last night. Colby, hit it.
You are Locked-on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Ahoy, sailors, it is Wednesday, June 24th, 2026. My name is Tading Gazzalas, and I'm joined as always by my co-coes, Colby Patneau.
Today we'll look back on last night's three to two Mariners win over the pirates, including Andres Munoz's dominant outing as well.
well as George Kirby's gutsy performance in this one.
We'll also give you the latest on Dom Kand zone.
But we start, of course, with the hometown kid.
We have to.
Cole Young making his first big league appearance at PNC Park.
The ballpark that he used to go to all the time as a youngster,
he's the hero for the Mariners in this one.
Marries offense,
not really able to get much going against Pirates starter, Mitch Keller.
They just had one run off of a solo home run from Cal Raleigh.
heading into the seventh inning.
That's where Luke Rayley doubled,
and then Young got a 1-0 hanging sweeper
right above the knees that he drove out
over that high right field wall there in PNC Park
for a two-run blast to make it three-two Mariners,
which wound up being the difference in this one.
That wound up being all the mariners needed.
Cole Young after last night's game,
now back to a 100 WRC plus on the season.
But in what Fangraphs considers to be 30,
high leverage plate appearances for young this season.
He is now slashing 462, 517,
962, a 962 slugging percentage
as a WRC plus of 309
and what Fangraphs considers to be the biggest at-bats
of young season so far.
It's had a lot of big moments
for the Mariners late in games so far this year.
but perhaps none bigger for him, at least personally, than lost nights.
Really cool stuff for Cole Young.
Yeah, it was obviously a really cool moment.
And Cole, as we know, is given the Mariners really good plate appearances
when, you know, situations are at their most dire,
whether that be runners in scoring position or the high leverage spots
or runners in scoring position with two outs.
Cole just gives you a good at bat.
almost every time.
Regardless if he's struggling in general,
he's still in those moments
would give you a pretty good at bat.
That's really all you can do as a player.
Whether you get a hit or not is so often not in your control
just because that's the way baseball works.
You could perfect swing and hit the ball really hard
and it goes right to somebody and you make an out.
And now you choked because you didn't get the base hit
with the game on the line and all that.
But again, it's just about giving yourself a good,
at bad, giving yourself a chance to be the hero.
And Cole Young, you're doing that very, very well early in his career.
Same, very similar to that of J.P. Crawford.
And, you know, there's a lot of J.P. Crawford and Cole Young's offensive profile.
So maybe that's a part of it.
Maybe it's just a mentality thing.
But, yeah, obviously, big night for Cole in front of, you know, his hometown team in front
of his high school coach.
And, you know, I think he said he had like 50 people there for that game.
So obviously, really, really fun night for him and big hit for the Mariners.
They really needed it because they were not good against one of the worst qualified pitchers in baseball.
They couldn't really get anything going.
They needed that and they got it.
And so huge kudos to Cole Young.
And again, a very cool story.
I don't know if you guys know this or not, but he's actually from the Pittsburgh area.
I don't know if that's been told you over the last 48 hours today.
But like he grew up like 20 minutes away.
from the ballpark.
His favorite player was Neil Walker.
Did you know that?
Like Pittsburgh Pirates Legend.
Like I don't know if you guys are aware of all these facts.
By the way, wait until they go to Cleveland and you learn about Luke Rayleigh and Colt Emerson.
But yeah.
And Dom Kanzon.
And Don Kanzon.
Yeah, exactly.
But yeah, it's very cool, obviously.
And it's one of those, you know, romantic baseball moments.
Yeah.
But yeah.
In a bigger picture thing, it's, it's,
pretty important for the mariners who need to start
racking up some series wins here and they take game one
as a result and that's great to see.
So obviously very cool.
And yeah,
Cole just really good in these spots because he's
taking it, he takes a good at bat pretty much every single time up there.
And yeah, that's the important thing.
When the game's on the line, you got to maintain who you are and do what you're good at.
And Cole does that very, very well.
Yeah.
So as I mentioned, the mayors only have one run going into that seventh inning before Cole gave the marries the lead and ultimately the win in the end.
That one run coming off the bat of Cal Raleigh there in the top of the fourth, pretty much the same pitch that Cole Young got from Keller.
Same location, all that.
And Cal had hit it to a similar spot as well over that high right field wall.
Good to see from Cal who's having better.
appearances as of late.
Yeah, yeah, better, but still not, not close to where he needs to be.
Continues to chase that pitch at his eyes and like he's just DOA if he's going to keep swinging
at that pitch.
But yeah, I mean, like he had the one for strikeout game.
But other than that, strikeouts haven't been a problem for him.
He's found a way to collect some hits.
He's drawn a lot of walks.
Still don't think he should be hitting second for the foreseeable future.
I know he hit there a bunch last year.
We actually got a question about that yesterday for the mailbag or two days ago.
Well, we didn't answer it.
But I saw it.
And should Cal hit second?
He's never done it before.
Like, well, no, he spent most, well, he hit second or third pretty much all of last year.
So I don't think he should be doing that now until he gets things figured out.
But obviously, a big deal of Cal can get going, especially since Julio's kind of really regressed this month.
He's had a poor month of June.
Actually, swung the bat pretty well last night.
Just didn't get paid off for it.
But, yeah, Cal kind of, you know,
reasserting himself as a legitimate threat in this lineup would be massive.
And you hope that this first home run is something that gets him going,
gets him on a run because the Mariners really, really need Cal Raleigh in general.
But especially when, you know, Randy had a rough night last night in his return
and Julio didn't really contribute.
although again he had some nice outbats
like they really need Cal
and the offense is just really struggling right now
and they needed their stars to step up
and you know hopefully
last night is a sign of things to come for Cal Raleigh
all right switching gears here
I want to talk about Andre Sminios
that night that it was disgusting
we'll talk about him we'll talk about George Kirby
we'll talk about Edward Bizarro in just a moment

So we talked about this going into last night's game, Colby.
This Pirates offense really good.
They're deep.
They're one of the best offenses in baseball in terms of WRC Plus.
I think they were fourth in WRC Plus heading into last night's game.
And the marins were able to hold them to just two runs.
And And Andreas Munoz specifically had to,
hold them scoreless there in that ninth inning with just a one run lead facing the nine
one and two hitters facing Tyler Callahan off of the bench in that nine whole spot and
Callahan I think we mentioned this on the show yesterday I can't remember now
Callahan's been good to start the year and Munoo strikes him out
Muno strikes out Spencer Horwitz who's had a fantastic season and he strikes out
Brandon Lau who's also had a fantastic season good morning good afternoon
good night.
It was sick stuff from Andres
Smonios last night.
That was one of the better outings we've seen from him
all season long.
Yeah, I mean,
one of the best outings we've seen from him ever
in the grand scheme of things.
He was dominant.
I mean, the average fastball was 101,
I think 100.7 to be exact.
I don't believe he threw a fastball
under 100 miles an hour.
He threw 11 of them.
He topped out at 102, a clean 102.
And the fastballs were all on the corner.
Like nothing was in the middle of the plate.
He was throwing 101, hitting the corners, and then elevating the fastball,
like just high enough that no hitter could ever touch it,
but not so high that they could lay off of it.
Like that is what Munoz looks like with 80 command.
We saw it last night.
And as you can see, it's unhittable.
Now, Munoz isn't going to have 80 command.
Munoz has 50 command.
Usually that's more than good enough to get the job done.
But you see what happens when Munoz can, you know, have pinpoint command of the fastball.
He can actually use it.
When Munoz gets into trouble, it's when he puts the fastball in the middle of the plate.
So I don't know if he's just feeling good or yesterday is just kind of an outlier or whatever.
Yeah.
Where has this Velo spike come from?
Yeah, I mean, look, I mean, it's kind of funny because, like, his average Velo on the four seamer is like 98.
and a half miles an hour.
So it's not like, you know, slow or anything like that.
But yeah, we've never seen him hit 102.
I mean, the last couple times out, it's been sitting at 100.
Yeah.
And he's touched 101.
And again, yesterday he had a true 102, not a 101.7, like a straight 102.
No, I'm looking at it right now.
It's 102.0.
Yeah.
So I don't know.
Maybe it's just, you know, maybe he was dealing with something earlier this year.
and now he's feeling good.
Maybe it's just like screw this.
I got to let it rip and let the cards fall where they may.
And maybe it's just more confidence in having that fastball.
And that just kind of naturally leads to not trying to be too fine with it.
And, you know, you kind of remove that extra layer of thinking about your mechanics and all that.
And you just let it rip and it goes where you want it to.
Like, yeah, the Velo we know is there.
But Munoz has been very, very effective as a 97, 98 mile an hour fastball guy,
with the wipeout slider.
Well, the slider, he's kind of, you know, trying to find it.
And so maybe it's just as simple as like, look,
I don't have the great feel for my slider right now.
So I got a rear back here and just peeve.
I don't know what it is because, again,
the VLO certainly is the thing that pops off the,
you know, off the charts at you from last night.
But go watch the locations of those 11 fastballs.
I mean, they are, they're beautiful.
They are pinpoint right on the corners.
And then when he needed, when he wanted to go up,
They were right where they needed to be to avoid, you know, any kind of chance or prayer that the pirates had of doing anything except maybe fouling that pitch off.
Like he did not throw a dangerous pitch, that entire outing.
He dominated and he did it with the four-seem fastball, which again is Munoz was more sinker heavy in the past.
So it wasn't a sinker that he was.
It wasn't a two-seamer, right?
It was just a four-seamer that he was thrown last night.
It's just really impressive stuff.
And, you know, we talk or I talk a lot about the, on the show, we call it the FU fastball, because that's all we're allowed to say.
The heck you fastball.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The screw.
Fastball.
Well, there was 11 of them last night and Munoz threw all 11.
And it was a sight to see.
And, you know, again, he did it against a couple really good hitters.
And then Callahan's having a nice year, too.
So, like, those are three legitimate left-handed hitters that he had,
deal with and he just
screw you, I'm better than you.
You can't hit this and I'm just going to throw it
and you can't do anything about it.
And again, the command, the control again.
Command is tricky with relievers because command,
if you guys refreshers, control is the ability
to just throw pitches in the strike zone.
Command is putting the baseball right where you want it to be.
Yeah.
And Munoz, if it wasn't 80 command last night,
it was 70, like on the 280 scale.
So typically the better your stuff, the less command you need.
And Munoz's stuff, when he's on, he can survive with 40 command, 50 control.
Like, last night it was 80, 80, 80, everything was an 80, except maybe the slider,
which was probably still like a 60.
So yeah, it's just really impressive stuff from Munoz last night.
And, you know, it's back to back good outings from him, which we have not seen in quite a while.
So good to see.
the villos last night for munoz
102 flat 101 and a half
101.1.1.1 flat 100.9
100.7 100.6 100.4
99.9.99.9.99.9.99.3.
so they threw one pitch under 100 miles
Yeah. Technically. Yeah.
Yeah. That's
That was not an order by the way.
No, no, no.
That's pretty, pretty good.
So, yeah, Munoz again.
We'll see what he looks like in his next outing.
But it has been a minute since he put two in a row together.
And he was very good against Boston on Sunday, and he was very good yesterday.
So it's a great sign for the Mariners.
And hopefully it's another handful of outings like this in a row.
Yeah, the 102.303 was his third to last fastball of the night.
and then his last two fastballs
basically 101
just disgusting
discussing stuff
speaking of discussing stuff
now Edward Bizarro gave up a single
there was a stolen base he also
walked a guy
Ozuno went in that ABS challenge
to earn the walk
but
Bizarro did unspeakable things to Andy Rodriguez
yeah
Yeah
Mirrens bullpen had itself
A good night
Last night
Definitely a night worthy of multiple clips
From a good old pitching ninja
And then
You know Jose Ferrer
Nice to see him just have a clean inning
Didn't have like a dominant inning
Necessarily but got three
Outts
Face 3 batters got three outs
That's good to see
You know it's been a little bit of a shaky
Last week and a half for Jose
So good to see him get back on the horse there.
Didn't throw any sliders, which is kind of the make or break pitch against
Slefties in particular.
And that's a pitch he has not had any control or command of in his last three or four
outings.
So I wouldn't say we're out of the woods yet.
But yeah, definitely a good sign.
The sinker was really good and it was pretty well located most of the night.
And even through a couple really good changeups, got a whiff on one of them as well.
Like we know he's got really good V-Lo.
we know he's got good fastballs, but he still has to have an off-speed pitch.
And against lefties, it's the slider.
Against right, he's the change-up.
And he at least showed improvement on the change-up last night.
We'll see where he's at with the slider.
But, yeah, Ferrer been daddy for most of this year, but the last, you know, two, three, four times out,
just hasn't had it.
And it's been those command of the off-speed pitches.
And so once he gets that back, I'm, again, not concerned about Ferrer in the long run,
but definitely need to see him, you know, put together two or three good outings in a row.
And last night was a good first step.
All right, coming up, we'll talk about George Curry's night as well as Dominic Canzon.
Missing yesterday's lineup.
We'll see if he can get into the lineup tonight.
Go over that in just a moment.

Kind of an ugly one for Kirby, but one that he was able to get out here and give the Mariners a really good shot to win this game.
Yeah. I know it's like it's his third quality start in a row. Like, okay, did you watch the.
starts because like he's still not where he needs to be but the fact that he battled the fact
that he definitely kept his team in this game and gave them a chance to win despite the three
errors behind him although one of them was his fault um you know it it really is a nice piece of
pitching just very gritty performance is how i would kind of phrase it he gave up a lot of hard
contact he gave up a lot of hits uh by the end of the day he only allowed two runs and only one of them
was earned. And that's obviously, you know, what you need from a starter. When he doesn't have
his best stuff, when things aren't going well around him, you need him to dial it in and make the
big pitches. And he did. And he was able to go six innings, you know, despite, I believe
throwing close to 20 pitches in that first inning, still able to find a way to go six.
Again, only give up two runs, give the offense at just enough time to kind of find a way to
scratch out runs against Mitch Keller, gross. But, you know, they did. They found a way to do it.
and so they got the win.
So yeah, George, kind of a underrated,
underappreciated part of last night's win.
But, you know, he was very, very good.
Well, he was very, very good when he had to be.
Yeah.
Which was often because of all the traffic that he had surrendered.
So pretty interesting pitch mix from him, though.
So something to keep an eye out through a lot of sweepers.
Which, I mean, was it where the pirates had a lead off devil
and he was able to get out of that?
Was that the fourth?
I think so, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So like you said, when he absolutely needed it,
he was able to get into his bag and just kind of dig his heels in
and found a way to get out of it more often than that.
So good to see it from George.
His primary pitch yesterday was the sweeper,
which is unusual for him.
It was 45, 46% I believe.
Yeah, 46% sweeper.
Yeah.
It was his primary pitch, which is weird.
George throws his fastball out.
Maybe it's because there's a lot of lefties,
but he didn't throw a change up, or he didn't really throw his change up last night.
So I don't know what the game plan was there.
But yeah, a ton of sweepers from George, not as many fastballs as normal.
Yeah, only 32 fastballs between the four seam and the sinker.
Right.
And I believe most of those came in his first time through the order.
The second and third time through the order, I'm not mistaken.
He threw the four seamer four or five percent of his pitches after the first time through the order.
So first time through, it was fastball sweeper and kind of a normal, you know, sequencing.
But after they got, after the order, you know, came back around for the second time,
it was mostly breaking balls and off speed pitches.
So again, I'm not sure what it was.
Some kind of adjustment, some kind of game plan.
I don't know.
But whatever it was, it worked just well enough.
And again, three errors.
You gave up, what, eight hits?
nine hard hit balls, whatever it was.
Like typically those numbers combined would, you know,
scream. He gave up five, six runs and they just never had a chance to win.
So a really nice job by George.
Kind of bulldog is the way through that lineup three times.
And again, just hang around long enough for the offense to finally put something together.
And it's nice to see George get kind of a good luck win.
Good luck, negative connotation.
know what I mean. Like it just kind of had some rough losses, had some, you know, some rough
Bapit block and all that over his last few starts. And this time could have easily imploded on
him. But again, he kind of grinded it out and found a way to, uh, to help his team win. Yeah,
again, like looking at the stat line, all those hard hit balls, the eight hits, the three errors
on top of that. That's a dangerous spot to be in against this Pirates lineup specifically.
So the fact that he was able to
limit the damage to just two runs in total
And only one of them was earned
That's good stuff from George Kirby
Yeah, so yeah, feel really good about his start
Last night
Lastly, before we get out of here
Dom Kanzone wasn't in the lineup
Last night with his hamstring thing
He was expected to take some swings in the cage
And I think he's supposed to do that again today
And go through some running drills as well
And then they'll reassess and see if maybe he could be in the line
up tonight. So no decision yet on Canzone. My guess is if he can't go tonight, they might
I'll him just because that would be kind of on a similar-ish timeline to how Randy's thing went.
So we'll see. But yeah, hopefully they can get Canzone back into the fold here because obviously
team leader in WRC Plus and all that would be massive.
Yep, they kind of need them.
you know, especially since I think we have to assume Randy's going to take a couple days to kind of get his footing back and all that after missing a whole, you know, 10 days and not not getting a rehab assignment or anything like that.
So yeah, really struggle last night at the plate.
Yeah, which again, not too surprising, but yeah, it is also.
I also wonder how much him deaching last night has to deal with just kind of like easing him back into things and also.
Because, you know, pretty big left field out there and PNC Park.
Yeah.
I mean, plus if Canzone, you know, what do you do if Randy and Canzone both have to DH?
You know, like if they're just comfortable with either of them playing the field right now because you want to try and protect the hamstring.
Yeah.
How do you handle that?
Because only one of them can be in the, you know, at the DH spot, obviously.
So maybe that's factoring into the decision two.
maybe it's like, hey, you know, Canzone is not going to play today.
So let's just put Randy in the DH spot.
And then we'll worry about left field tomorrow or whenever Canzone can play.
So, yeah, we'll see.
By the time you guys are listening to this, you probably know whether or not Canzone is in the lineup.
So, you know, we're recording this about, I don't know, an hour before they release the lineups, if that even.
So we'll see.
Yeah, if he's not able to go today, I think they'll strongly consider placing him on the IL.
the Mariners have been very cautious all year.
And I don't really see a reason to not be cautious, especially again.
If Canzone or Randy, if they don't feel good about one of them playing in the field,
you kind of can't have both of them on the roster.
So I think at that point you probably just IL-Can zone.
But we'll see.
I think you could miss tonight and they could still backdate it to Monday.
So you would still only miss a week or you'd still only spend a week on the IL.
So I think they can wait one more day before they make that decision,
but they've been very, very cautious about these types of things.
And, you know, I guess the good news is Dan did not say he was available off the bench yesterday.
So there might be a chance here that he can play.
And the overall good news is like it doesn't seem like it's as serious as it looked initially when he suffered that injury.
Even if he is going to have to go on the aisle,
it doesn't seem like it's going to be a thing that'll take him out too too long since he clearly has a shot to play tonight.
Doesn't seem like a four to six injury.
No.
And kind of, you know, when it happened.
It's kind of your initial thought.
Yeah.
When you see it catch before he hits the base and then he hits the base and immediately
grabs back in that area, you're like, that's a, that's a terrible, like a serious
strain.
Look, hamstrings are weird.
Like you can have them and it'll be fine in a couple days and you'll never, and you won't
worry about it again for the rest of the year.
or it could just kind of just grab at you randomly throughout the year and you never know.
So hamstrings you do want to be very careful about.
But yeah, we'll see what tonight, what today's lineup looks like.
And having Canzone back would obviously be huge.
Probably should be hitting second in this lineup or third or fourth.
Yeah, yeah.
Should certainly be hitting ahead of current Cal Raleigh and current Josh Naler,
who, by the way, had a hilarious day yesterday at the plate.
Yeah.
Two line shots caught and then a bloops thing.
and like a 15 hopper through the left side.
Those are the hits that you get.
Like, oh, yeah, sure.
You know, so, yeah, JP, a couple of hits last night, too.
Yeah.
First little hiccups at third base.
We'll see how quickly he cleans those up.
But yeah, the lineup, having Canzone back really does help,
especially with the way he's hitting this month.
Like, you kind of need that pop in there.
You need that threat in there.
And, you know, it kind of stinks that comes to this time, too,
because it sounds like he basically earned an everyday role.
So we'd probably see him against some lefties,
which, again, I don't know why he earned it in 22 at-bats this year,
as opposed to the 100-so he had last year or whatever it was.
But whatever, they arrived at the correct conclusion eventually.
So we'll see how that goes.
But, yeah, they need can zone.
And it's a big part of it is because of how bad Rob Ref Snyder
and Victor Robles have been offensively.
We don't talk a lot about Robles, but we probably should.
All right.
That is going to do it for our show.
