Fan fiction Friday returns coming up.
Colby, hit it.
You are Locked on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Ahoy, sailors, it is Friday, October 9th, 2026.
My name is Taddy Gazzalas, and I'm joined as always by my co-coes.
Colby Patnode on today's show, Fan Fiction Friday returns.
Fan Fiction Friday, for those of you who are new or need a reminder,
is a show where listeners submit their Mariners trade ideas,
and we react to them and grade them on the 2080 scale,
20 being terrible, 80 being amazing, of course.
And that grade is based on creativity, uniqueness,
and of course if the trade actually makes sense,
not just for the Mariners,
but the other team involved as well.
So let's see what y'all got this time around.
We're going to start with NWFXC,
who has a deal with the A's,
sending Emerson Hancock to Sacramento for the time being.
Zach Gelloff and Elvis Alvarado,
former Mariners farmhand going back to Seattle and this deal, Colby.
I don't know.
If this deal came across the ticker or whatever,
he got that alert that this was a trade that was made,
I'd be pretty happy about it, like in general.
Like, I like Gelloff,
and I think he's a good fit in Seattle.
He's the right-handed bat they need.
Not necessarily like the impact bat they keep talking about,
which again, I say, okay, and who is that?
Because I can't find one.
But, you know, he's a good, solid above average bat.
He's a good third baseman, really good defensive third baseman.
He could also play some second, kind of frees you up to use Donovan as kind of this chess piece.
And maybe Donovan's now your left fielder.
And he pairs very well with Arroyo.
And then if Arroyo does play well enough to play every day,
Donovan can play second.
He can play right.
He can play left.
We've been over this with Donovan.
You can get him plenty of time without having him, you know, be in one set position.
So, yeah, I think overall I'd be pretty happy with this trade.
It would open up another can of worms, though, like, are you not trading George Kirby now?
Because it seems like if you're going to trade George Kirby, you have to do it this winter.
Well, I think that has to be part of this discussion that now, like you've traded a guy that's not making any money who you have under club control for multiple years.
and now that means that you're probably keeping George Kirby, who only has two years left, and then, like, are you just never trading him?
I guess is this just leading to him eventually walking in free agency in a couple years?
How comfortable are you with Ryan Sloan potentially being in your opening day rotation?
Or are you going to spend more money to go get a number five starter now?
Like, what's?
Well, and also is Hancock the way to maximize the return for one of your starting pitchers?
because you because like Kirby and Hancock
well Kirby mostly from my perspective
is kind of a huge key to them
rebuilding the roster this offseason
not rebuilding in the sense that we usually use the term rebuilding
but you know what I mean there's a lot that they have to address
on this roster goals yeah
and to me I think Kirby helps you do that
more than Hancock does just because of the questions around
Hancock, even though that he's not making any money and he has all this club control and all that.
I do think Kirby gives you the better path to accomplishing that.
And also, again, that allows you to keep Hancock.
And that's more favorable for your payroll situation and just your long-term outlook for your rotation and all that.
All I can say is like at the end of the day, like if I could do this deal for George Kirby, I would in a heartbeat.
but for Hancock, I still think it's fine.
So I'm going to give it a 50 because I think you're close to the ballpark.
And, you know, Gelloff, not anything we've talked about all that much.
And, you know, Seattle needs a right-handed hitting infielder.
Oakland or Sacramento really needs starting pitching.
I think there's a good deal of sense in this type of trade for both sides.
give it a 50. I think it's
I think it's relatively
close and it's like in the
ballpark. It makes sense. It's
mildly creative. It's just because
we haven't heard Gelloff really all that much.
So yeah, I think it's a solid
50 grade. I think it's better than a
50. I'll go 55, 60.
Gelloff is a pretty good player coming off
of a good year. Good offensive
season, especially. I can play multiple
spots. He would really help. But
there's obviously that that conversation
and the question of Hancock versus Kirby and all that,
that does need to factor into this.
Switch has a one-for-one swap of relievers with a division rival here.
Robert Garcia,
the lefty from the Rangers to the Mariners for Edward Bizarro.
So we got the classic case of trade a guy that had a bad second half
for a guy that was injured for most of the year.
Yeah, I guess my question for, you know,
both sides of this would be why like what's the point exactly um i just like if you're the rangers
why would you want bizardo over garcia unless you have some health concerns with garcia going
forward and if you're the mariners okay if they're concerned about garcia's health
right you know like what why should i be why shouldn't i be yeah because that that would be that would
that's the only thing that would make sense for them to trade garcia for bizardo straight up is that
they're concerned about because it was a rotator cuff injury i believe right yeah and if i'm
remembering correctly here one of the other things that could be in play here is texas has a
very left-handed heavy bullpen already sure uh so if they want to do but like wouldn't you if you were
Texas, wouldn't you rather just, if you're going to trade a lefty, wouldn't you just trade Garcia for like a prospect and then sign a Bizarro type in free agency for a couple million bucks? Like, isn't that the better path to go of your Texas?
Look at one thing, both these guys have three, both of these guys are Arbonne. Both of them are making roughly the same amount. I think Bizarro's making a couple hundred grand more.
But yeah, like Garcia was really good in 2025. Now, so was Bizarro. Yeah. So, so is Bizarro. Yeah. So.
these just feel like you're swapping $5
bills for each other and I guess
the rationale might be that
both guys. Garcia fits better
for the Mariners bullpen and
Bizarro fits better for the Rangers bullpen.
Yeah. Maybe. Yeah.
I just, I don't know if that's true or not though.
I get it, but also like I just
feel like Garcia is overall the more
valuable reliever.
Like I just view him
higher than Bizarro and maybe
that's recently biased just because of how
bad the second half for Bizarro
was but I mean even if even if you just put them side by side before Bizarro just completely went off
the rails in the second half I probably would have taken Garcia put their last three years
like next to each other like do a resume at the last three years and I think you'd probably take
Garcia so I'm not saying it's not close yeah but it does feel kind of like one of those like
hey are are the mayor's going to tack on an Isaac Lyons type like they did with the Harry four
trade like it is.
Are they going to tack on a Brock Rodden or, I don't know, like a 19-year-old pitcher and A-ball that they kind of like to kind of, because I think that would be the only way Texas would consider something like this.
Because if you're Texas and you want to trade Garcia, I would trade Garcia for a prospect instead of a, you know, a middle reliever.
Like, what's the point of that for me if I'm Texas?
So I would do this if I were the Mariners.
I just, I wouldn't do this if I were the Rangers.
I just don't think it makes sense for them, you know, to trade a reliever for a reliever.
Unless they're much more interested in competing next year than I kind of feel like they are.
I think when I listen to Chris Young, I listen to a guy who seems like he's understanding that like, yeah, we kind of have to take a step back a little bit before we move forward again.
And there's been these rumors for a while about trading Corey Seeger.
They already traded Semyon last year.
All the money that they spent in that one off season is really finally like caught up to them.
and they haven't had the success to pay it off.
So, yeah, they're kind of in this weird spot where they might be trying to dial it back a little bit.
And they've talked about accountability and, like, having guys who are available and how important that is going forward.
And, you know, bizardo is definitely available.
But, yeah, I just think this is like a 40 because it's like, it's not bad, but it's like, why?
I think it's better than a 40.
I would give it a 50.
It is really interesting.
it's like it's it's a fun challenge trade but i yeah i'll i'll bump it up because a reliever
for a reliever trade is not something we get that often so i'll give it like a 45 i just for me
texas if i'm texas i'm like why what's the point i think it's i think it's pretty creative but yeah
i don't know i have a lot of questions about it but yeah i i think it's a 50 all right we
will look at more of your trades in just a moment but first a reminder of this episode of the locked on

Let's get back into your trades here
on Fan Fiction Friday.
The return here for the
2026-27
off season. Ryan has a deal here
involving George
Kirby. Kirby going
to the Diamondbacks in the steel for Ryan Waldschmidt and former Mariner Prospect and
friend of the show on Mr. Brannon Garcia.
Yeah.
I don't know.
That's good start.
Yeah.
Kirby's trade value, which we're going to talk about a lot, although hopefully not all
winter long because I'm kind of hoping they get this thing done in November.
But his trade value is a little bit.
difficult to nail down because, you know, I know you and I tie both think this and we've heard
this and been told this from other people who know that, yeah, Kirby's trade value is probably
going to be pretty good this winter because there's going to be plenty of teams who look at
George Kirby and be like, oh, I can fix that.
An elite strike thrower.
I can fix them.
Yeah, exactly.
And maybe they can.
Maybe they have the tweak that fully unlocked George Kirby.
But I think what we, at least collectively, most of us have come to realize or come to
except at least is that the Mariners are not going to be the team that do that.
We also know that the Mariners need to make an opening in their rotation and maybe as many
as two because, you know, Ryan Sloan is not that far behind.
And they're not going to roll with a six-man rotation.
We know that.
It doesn't make sense to trade Miller.
It doesn't make sense to trade Wu.
They're not going to trade Gilbert.
So it's Hancock or it's Kirby, like we talked about in the first segment.
And Kirby's got two years left.
So it makes the most sense to trade him.
and you look at what like Freddie Peralta went for for a year of Freddie Peralta.
He got pretty good value.
And Kirby has two years.
And when they're both at their best, Kirby is very much as good if not better than Freddie Peralta.
But Kirby's also had a couple mediocreish years in a row now, at least by his standard.
So yeah, it's difficult to know.
And, you know, Ty, like you mentioned at the segment one, I believe, done a lot of these today, that, you know,
you know, if you're going to trade George, like that's your big trade chip,
whoever, whatever start you do trade, that's your big chip.
And you have to kind of fill as many gaps as you can with that one trade chip.
Are the Mariners going to look at Brandon Garcia and say like, that's it.
Like, that's the only other piece we need than Waldschmidt.
I kind of doubt it just because, you know, how valuable is a reliever in a trade where you can get,
you know, two like really good prospects or a young.
major leaguer in a really good prospect or two young major leaguers who were former top prospects like maybe walshman and lawler so how many questions are you willing to acquire to trade george kirby because you know at least when the borough's trade like they knew brandon law was going to be good right away like he's a good player like he has an established track record so it's like is there a rental that the marriage could go get on top of a couple of you know interesting young major leaguers that's what they should be shooting for i don't know if they can
get it. At the end, I don't know how much they're going to let Garcia shave off the value elsewhere.
I just don't know if that's enough to take less, but Arizona is a good spot for them.
The bones of the trade make a good deal sense.
So I think we could, I think I'd probably give it a 50, 4550.
It feels a piece light from Seattle.
They should be getting another piece.
But the problem is I don't know who that piece is because I'm looking at Arizona's
roster and it's like well it's not going to be martay for obvious reasons it's obviously not carol or
moreno and the rest of their roster it's like you're you're going to have to take a shot on somebody
that hasn't quite broken out yet and you're kind of already doing that with the headliner of the
trade so Juan mario like are you going to take two relievers as part of this you know I don't
I don't think you're getting Maria I don't think you're getting lower like on top of
on top of the rest of us yeah Arizona is a really good fit I come back to
I think Kirby's getting dealt in a three-team trade.
That's just kind of where I've come to.
Just because I can't find the team that has all the pieces that make a lot of sense for the Mariners
and all the teams that do make good deal sense for Kirby,
they all seem to be like one piece short.
But as things stand right now, because we have to move on,
I'll give this trade a 50, 45, 45.
I just, I just, I don't know if this accomplishes,
what you need to accomplish in a
Kirby deal.
Now, it's possible that
this has better long-term
benefits than whatever Kirby deal
you wind up making.
If it's more, if you're more so
going into a Kirby trade with more of a
short-term outlet.
Yeah, exactly. Right? Like, how do I
best, you know,
address all the needs on the 2020-
27 impact? Yeah.
Like, yeah, you're going to, yeah, like, that's
something that the front office will have to weigh.
with this Kirby thing.
But, yeah, I mean,
just,
too,
by the way.
Well,
yeah,
and so it just,
it feels like Kirby is the key
to a lot of the work
that needs to be done
specifically on the 2027 roster.
Yeah.
And so if we're looking at this deal
from that perspective,
Waltzschmidt kind of has to hit.
Because like,
you're not going to play him in center field.
So that takes away a little bit.
And now he's still a great glove
and he would be great in left field, he'd be great
and right field. And that would still
help you quite a bit, but
that's not as impactful as him
playing in center field. Right. So that does
strip away some of that value
and it just puts more pressure
on the bat. Now the bat was pretty solid.
You know, 284
plate appearances was a 93 WRC plus, but the
slash time was actually pretty good. He just didn't slug. It was
256, 325, 365,
368. Did strike out 30% of the time. That's a little bit of a
concern because he did not strike out.
at all down in the miners.
I mean, it went up to 22.6% in AAA, but in 2025, it was like 17%.
So kind of interested about that.
But like, I love Ryan Walschman.
I think he's going to be a fantastic major leaguer.
I just don't know if that's going to happen in 2027.
And so again, because Kirby is so crucial, potentially so crucial to building out the rest of this 2027 roster,
is this the best path for you to go down with this particular trade?
I don't know.
But if we're just looking at this trade in a vacuum,
I think it's fine.
I'd be, again, I'm a big Ryan Walshman guy,
so I'd be pretty stoked about that.
I also really like Brandon Garcia.
He was one of the best left-handed relievers in all of baseball this year.
So you're getting good pieces back for George Kirby.
Like, you're getting pretty good value back.
I do feel like there should be one.
I feel like there should be like a Jake
Mangum type of piece of we're, you know,
kind of using like the Mike Burroughs trade,
which again isn't isn't like a necessarily good comp
for a George Kirby trade.
But if we're just kind of going back to that,
like in looking for a third piece,
I do think that they need like another role player type of,
you know,
addition to this trade.
I mean, like maybe like Tommy Troy as kind of like a utility guy,
but like it does feel like you like the guy who can play every day.
And, like, I don't know if Troy can or can'ts.
So I don't know.
I just don't think you're getting another everyday player.
I don't think you're getting another significant bullpen piece on top of Walt Schmidt with his prospect status.
And then Garcia coming off of the year that he is.
I think you like Walt Schmidt more than I do.
And I think Walt Schmidt's a good prospect.
Don't get me wrong.
I just, I don't think that I would want him to be the, to me, he's a prospect that needs a co-headliner.
And I just don't know if Garcia is a co-headliner.
Not that he's not good, just that he's a reliever.
You know, and that's, that's not to square.
So I don't know.
Yeah, a lot of questions with this.
Yeah, a lot of questions with this.
And look, we're going to get a billion George Kirby trades.
It's not just, I mean, we already did this time around.
We're going to get plenty more over the course of this off season,
especially if they don't make a Kirby trade or a Hancock trade before the lockout begins.
So that's going to hurt the grades on all of these Kirby trades.
Yep.
So, yeah.
So I probably can't go higher than a 50 on this one.
All right.
We'll look at more of your trades in just a moment.
But first, a reminder of this episode of the lockdown errors podcast is brought to you by Game Day
Men's Health.
A quiz on your phone and a box at your door isn't a clinic.
When it comes to men's health, things like energy, sleep, drive, and how you feel day-to-day
deserve more than a questionnaire.
Game Day Men's Health is a real in-person men's health clinic with more than 430 locations
across the U.S. and Canada.
Men can meet face to face with a licensed clinician, get labs drawn in the office, and receive
initial results in as little as 15 minutes. Game day looks at the full picture, your symptoms
and your lab results before developing a treatment plan. And because they continue testing
and evaluating, care can be adjusted over time based on your data. It's easy to chalk up changes
in energy, sleep, drive, or even difficulty keeping weight off to getting older or being busy.
Having a place that's focused specifically on men's health can make it easier to actually get those concerns evaluated and understand just what's going on.

Let's get back into your trades here on fan fiction Friday.
Marys fan 2412
as as expected
a George Kirby for Ronald Acuna Jr. trade
which we talked about what yesterday?
Yeah, yesterday.
Kirby,
Felning Celestin, Nick Becker for Acuna.
Why are the Mariners adding pieces and the brains aren't?
Yeah, I'm only doing an Acuna trade if it's one for one, straight up.
And even then I have questions like we talked about on yesterday's episode.
Yeah, I don't want to spend too much time on this because we already talked about this so much on yesterday's episode.
So if you're curious to hear our thoughts on just Acuna and Kirby and potential trade of those two guys,
go listen to yesterday's episode
but yeah
I'm not including significant
prospect capital which I would consider
Celison and Becker to be
on top of Kirby to get
this done even with what the ceiling
of Acuna is just because of all
the questions about his lower body injuries
the wear and tear
just his overall fit into
kind of like the clubhouse and
everything that we talked about yesterday
Kirby's a safer bat in
2027 than Acuna just
is. Just because the injuries. Yeah. Yeah, he's going to be healthy. And, you know, if you believe that, you believe in George Kirby enough that you're willing to trade Ronald Coon Jr. for it, you're thinking he's going to be really good. He's going to get back to like 2023, 2024 George Kirby at least. And so I'm not adding on top of that unless the Braves are giving me something back. Like, you can expand a deal. But plus like we talked about yesterday, Acuna is making what, $8 million more than Kirby is?
8 million, yeah, this year.
And the next year will probably be close to even-ish.
Yeah.
So, yeah, I'm not adding anything.
Again, unless are the Braves sending me prospects?
Are they sending me a reliever maybe?
Or I don't know, like, Ozzy Albies and cash.
Like, and even then I'm not giving, I'm not giving Felman.
But you know what I mean?
Like, why would I add to my side if they're not going to add to yours?
Because as it is right now, Kirby for Acuna is already.
a bigger risk for me than it is for them. So yeah, you add on top of that, like,
it's, it's dead. So like for me, that's like a 30. Um, because like Kirby for a Cooneya
straight up is, is like 50. I mean, like, I don't know. I'm kind of like in the middle here of like,
I don't know if you trade Kirby for like one. I mean, like Kirby as general or I think what I
I think, I think Kirby for a Coonia is like a 70.
Like if that actually happened, that would be a crazy trade.
Oh, it'd be like, yeah.
Like, yeah.
I mean, yeah, it'd be probably the most talked about trade of the winter for the next.
Like, it's the most insane challenge trade that I can take of.
It's a jolly olive video waiting to happen.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But like, it's just one of those things where it's like, I don't know if I want to trade George for the like the one for one for.
one like challenge trade like was Louisa rise and Pablo Lopez got traded for each other.
Yeah.
Like I don't know if I want something like that or if I want something more like, hey, let's get,
not bulk.
Like you're not trading them for a bunch of, you know, 20 to 25 prospects.
But like, you know, can I get a couple of role players and a good prospect or do I just want
the best pure prospect pack?
I don't know where I stand on that with Kirby.
I see a lot of different avenues here.
but I'm certainly not, you know, desperate enough to trade George Kirby.
Then I'm going to start attaching high quality trade chips to him just to move him
without getting something back in return for those guys.
So yeah, I think you just went over the top here.
I think you're overvaluing Acuna.
I just think George for Acuna straight up is, is fair.
There has to be like a, you know, number 28 prospect for like a number 17 prospect attached
to it or whatever.
fine who cares but like no i'm not trading legitimate prospects on top of george kirby to get ronald
a cunia junior no chance yeah no so yeah i'm at 30 35 somewhere in there
hey would you look at that another george kirby trade jack has kirby going to the nationals
along with mason peters for c j abrams why would the nationals want two years of george kirby
especially if they're trading c j abrams for him
That's my initial thought.
I just, that doesn't, like, 2 plus 2 doesn't equal 4 there from the Nationals side of things.
I don't think the Nationals think that they're going to go to a World Series in the next two years.
Especially not if they're trading CJ Abrams.
Right.
Like, the Nationals do need starting pitching.
Like, that is accurate.
Yeah.
They've talked about trading Abrams a lot over the years.
and the Mariners are one of the teams that have
the starting pitching the mariner or the nationals would want,
but their timelines just don't really line up.
Emerson Hancock makes infinitely more sense.
Yeah.
I just don't think
Kirby makes a ton of sense for the nationals.
No, that's where it begins.
It's right there.
We don't even need to talk about CJ Airwops here.
It's just George Kirby makes no sense for the nationals.
especially in a deal where they're trading what their second best player behind James Wood.
Yeah, unless the nationals are like convinced that they're going to go spend this off season
and they're going to bring in three or four pieces.
And it's like, you know, the Phillies are kind of down.
You've seen the free agent market.
What pieces are they bringing?
I mean, like, they go bring in Randy and Brandon Lowe or something like that.
Like, I guess, I don't know, sign the starting pitching free agent class is okay.
So maybe they go sign with the pitchers.
And it's like, okay, well, the Phillies are kind of.
down. The Marlins are kind of in the same boat. We are. I mean, the Braves, maybe they're still
a juggernaut, but who knows, like, there might be some room. So, like, if you get that very
specific scenario that the Nationals go down that one road, then maybe Kirby makes sense, but
probably not pre-lockout. And I think the Mariners are going to be somewhat motivated to get
one of their pitchers traded before the lockout hits. So I just think the Nationals part kind of
kills it unfortunately. That could change in a couple of months, but I kind of doubt it.
So I kind of have to give it like a 35, like valuation wise. It's not bad. But like the two teams just don't really line up that well right now.
What did I say at the top of the show? These grades are based on creativity, uniqueness. And shut up.
If the trade actually makes sense, not just for the Mariners, but the other team involved as well.
and this just does not make sense for the nationals.
It doesn't.
It doesn't.
Like it just.
Not as things currently stand.
Yeah.
It doesn't.
So do teams sometimes make trades that do not make sense for them?
Yes.
Yes.
But I'm still going to assume they won't.
So I'm going to get this one at 35, 40.
Yeah.
I just don't see this from Washington's perspective.
So, yeah, 35.
All right.
That is going to do it for our show.
