Locked On Mariners - Daily Podcast On the Seattle Mariners - Jeff Passan Says the Mariners Are in "Go Mode" For the 2024 Trade Deadline

Episode Date: June 4, 2024

In his early trade deadline preview on ESPN.com, Jeff Passan wrote that the Mariners are set to be very aggressive at the trade deadline this summer, mentioning the likes of Luis Robert Jr., Vladimir ...Guerrero Jr., Pete Alonso, and Bo Bichette as some potential targets. Additionally, team CEO John Stanton sat down with The Seattle Times to discuss the deadline, claiming the front office has the resources to add what it needs. Do Ty and Colby buy that? They discuss, as well as preview the Mariners' upcoming series with the Athletics.Ask us questions!Follow the show on Twitter: @LO_Mariners | @TyDaneGonzalez | @CPat11Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!PolicygeniusCheck life insurance off your to do list in no time with Policygenius. Starting point is 00:00:00 Mariner CEO John Stanton had some things to say about the upcoming trade deadline, which, according to Jeff Pass and a VSPN, is lining up to be a fun one for the M's. Let's talk about it. Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Ahoy, sailors. It is Tuesday, June 4th, 2024.
Starting point is 00:00:31 This is Tiding Gazzalus and Colby Patnaud for the Lockdown Marers podcast. part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day. Mariner's CEO John Stanton set down with Ryan Dibbish and Adam Jude of the Seattle Times for an interview. We're going to discuss some of the things he had to say in that. We're also going to talk about an exciting note from ESPN's Jeff Passen about the Mariners' aggressiveness at the deadline. And finally, we'll get you set for the Marr's three game series with the A's starting tonight. But before we do that, shout out to our title sponsor today, eBay Motors, from brakes to exhaust kits and beyond. eBay Motors has over 122 million parts to keep your rider die alive.
Starting point is 00:01:08 With all the parts you need at the prices you want, it's easy to bring home that big win. Keep your rider die alive at eBay motors.com. Eligible items only. Exclusions apply eBay guaranteed fit only available to U.S. customers. And if you want to hear from me and Colby even more and help support the show, check out our Patreon. The link is in the description and you can sign up for a free seven-day trial. So let's get into these quotes from one Mr. John Stanton, which generally
Starting point is 00:01:35 speaking is a giant nothing burger, as you would expect. But let's talk about it. It's rare that he actually talks about things revolving around the team that the general public would actually care about at the very least. He said, quote, we've got
Starting point is 00:01:51 the resources to be able to do the things we need to do to put a good team on the field. I look at the talent that we've got on the offensive side and I think we've got the ability to hit. That said, we will look at the trade deadline. I'll spend time with Jerry DePoto and Justin Hollander as we approach the deadline
Starting point is 00:02:07 and we'll talk about where we are. He also went on to mention some things about revenue losses with Root Sports with the uncertainty around root sports, all that. Yeah, all the stuff we generally know about. The only takeaway from this really is like, okay, he's come out and essentially
Starting point is 00:02:23 promise, like, we'll be active. We have the ability to be active. So there's a quote out there now. That at the very least, if they don't follow through on that we can point to. And that's essentially the extent of this. It was just like what, eight months ago.
Starting point is 00:02:39 He told Jerry you had X number of dollars to spend. And then like three days into the off season, he goes up to him. He's like, oh, by the way, yeah, I lied again for the third consecutive off season, you actually have less money than I told you you were going to have. So why on earth should I believe you in 2024 when you lied in 21, 22, 23? Why? Like what, what reason should I possibly? think that John Stanton is being sincere when he says like, oh, I'm going to give Jerry the resources because we think this team can win.
Starting point is 00:03:10 Which doesn't necessarily equates it money. Which we're, again, we're going to get into here in the second segment with what Jeff Passon had to say in his article today on ESPN. It could very well just be talking about prospects, which they do have a lot of really good prospects that are going to be attractive to other teams. That has nothing to do with John Stanton's role. right but again one thing that's not happening is john stand's not telling jerry to potto oh you can't trade gabriel gonzalez or you can trade gabriel but what i'm saying here is like he didn't actually promise to spend money right he didn't outright say like hey like if jerry and justin want go out and add you know vlad junior bobbashet or you know pita lonso or whoever you know guys that are making
Starting point is 00:03:55 a little bit of money here like they can do that without having to you know include like a mitch garver or a Polanco and having to basically bend over backwards to figure that whole puzzle out. He didn't say that. He just said we have the resources, which again could very much just mean prospects, which like you said, has nothing to do with John Stan. Nope. It's the only good thing about John Stanton right now is that, like, as far as we know, he's never told Jerry, no, I don't want you to trade that prospect.
Starting point is 00:04:28 Right. He doesn't make baseball decisions. He just screws the people who do make. baseball decisions by promising them X and then delivering them X minus 50%, give or take. He also had the, like a couple of other quotes that kind of rub me the wrong way. You know, I feel quote, I feel great about where we are and you know there are a whole bunch of things that go into the decisions we make. And clearly finances are a factor, but the loss of revenue from root isn't the reason we've
Starting point is 00:04:54 made any decisions over the last couple years. Lyer. Yeah. he also said hold on there is something about payroll in here yeah I can't find it but if you read the article you'll find it he essentially said like
Starting point is 00:05:09 you know we did actually raise payroll this year you know not as much as some people would like but we did like he wants like a pat on the head for that for what minimally raising payroll stupid so stupid like we all know what the restrictions placed upon this front office this off-season were.
Starting point is 00:05:31 We all know the waters that Jerry Depoto and Justin Hollander were allowed to swim in this off-season. We all know the things they had to do and the sacrifices they had to make in order to just add literally anything to this roster. So get out of here with that. That's not something you wave around like it's something to be proud of. And like, I think you said something like something to like something the last. the lines of we all have restrictions right which sure but you cannot convince me that these specific restrictions that you have are anything but self-imposed and if they're not self-imposed then frankly you shouldn't own a major league baseball team in one of the biggest
Starting point is 00:06:18 media markets in the united states sell the team so with all that said the mariners are apparently being very aggressive. They are in go mode, according to ESPN's Jeff Pass, and we'll get into that in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by Fandul. It's
Starting point is 00:06:42 winner take all time in the NBA and NHL and Fandul's giving you a shot to bring home a big win of your own. Right now, new customers get $150 in bonus bets with any winning $5 bet. That's $150 to bet on spreads, money,
Starting point is 00:06:58 lines, player props, and more. Visit Fanduel.com slash Locked on. That's LOC, KEDON, and make every playoff shot count. Fanduel, America's number one sportsbook. And you're listening to the Locked on Mariners podcast. The M's
Starting point is 00:07:16 kick off a three games set with the A's tonight. You can catch all the action on the Marriottes hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via the SXM app. All you have to do to find that is search. The word Mariners will be previewing that series a little later on in the show. also just some very quick news regarding the Mariners to make room for Victor Robles on the 40-man roster of the mayor's apparently DFAed Luis Reyes and he cleared waivers so he's been outrighted to Tacoma we didn't know about that it just he was outrighted to Tacoma today so he's off the 40-man roster clearly no one wanted to take on his money which I think is about three-ish million dollars by this point in the season
Starting point is 00:08:00 We're about a third of the way through the season. So third of five million dollars is about like what, 1.6. So yeah. Also, Eres accepted the assignment. So he's still in the org. If he hadn't accepted, he would have forfeited the $3.4 million. So that's why he wasn't going to do. No, no.
Starting point is 00:08:18 So yep, Eres is still here. He's just off the 40, man. All right. So let's talk about Jeff Passon, who wrote his early trade deadline preview today on ESPN. and he had a blurb about the Mariners who he put in the, I think he called it the definitive adders category at the deadline. He said, quote, the Mariners are in go mode,
Starting point is 00:08:45 not wanting to waste another season of their exceptional starting pitching. They've got the goods to do it too. No organization outside of Baltimore and perhaps Tampa Bay Bay possesses the array of position player prospects that Seattle does, and the Mariners will be on the hunt for impact bats to supplement a group of major league hitters that has been so bad the team fired its offensive coordinator less than 60 games into the season. Then he goes on to mention Luis Robert, Pete Alonzo, and especially Vlad Guerrero Jr. and
Starting point is 00:09:15 Bobauchette, if available, all will be in play for the Mariners. And the question isn't whether they're going to add offense. It's whom they're going to add. It's certainly interesting. Obviously, you know, you call them definite adders. And there does seem to be a feeling amongst, you know, in baseball circles that Seattle is absolutely going to add this summer. It's just kind of a matter of, you know, what, what aisle are they going to be shopping at? Are they shopping in like Whole Foods or are they going to Aldi?
Starting point is 00:09:48 You know what I mean? Like which one are they shopping at? So it's just one of those things where, you know, it's good to hear. Obviously, it's better than like, oh, you know, they're probably going to add around the fringe. is blah, blah, blah, blah. Like, no, and obviously you throw out the top, like literally, that's the top shelf stuff right there, those names. Will Seattle be willing to spend that price? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:10:10 They should. They absolutely should. But obviously, you know, anytime, you know, kind of the voice of, you know, baseball media comes out. This isn't Rosenthal. This isn't Heyman. This is a nightingale. This is Jeff Passing. You pay attention when Jeff Passant says something like this.
Starting point is 00:10:26 Right. And he's not thrown out like, oh, yeah, Bryce Mill. for you know Jonathan India like to just immediately undercut his whole like status like he's thrown out names that I'm sure he's heard or the Mariners are interested in and and they all make sense uh you know so I think obviously it's a it's a fun report doesn't mean anything no not really uh but is it better than the alternative like yeah obviously it is so uh you know it's fun it's fun to look at and of course that is unfortunately you know given everybody with a Twitter account an opinion on what the Mariners should or shouldn't do with their prospects.
Starting point is 00:11:04 But yeah, it's good to see. And obviously the specific listing of those players tells me that they not only, you know, are the Mariners probably going to have interest in them? But that past thinks that there is a pretty good chance that all of them are available to some degree this summer. And we know for sure that like Alonzo is going to be available. But yeah. And we know that Robert probably should be. And then Bichette and Vlad, like, I know that the GM came out and said like, oh, no, we have no intention of trading. Of course he's going to say that, guys.
Starting point is 00:11:36 Of course. It's June 4th. Like, they're not out of it yet. So talk to me again on like July 20 and we'll see where they're at. And then we'll know for sure whether or not they're actually available or not. Right. Also, Luis Robert, speaking of him, just got activated from his rehab assignment. So he's back in plain as of now, as of today.
Starting point is 00:11:56 sure uh so you know a lot of that obviously you know his his availability the potential of the mayor is adding him depends on him being able to stay healthy between now and the deadlines so we'll have to monitor that um but yeah it's uh that's exciting to hear certainly when you know the the top guy says like yeah the bearers are going to add it's just it's a matter of who they're going to add um and you know mentioning those top shelf guys like like you mentioned like seems like the bears are planning on shopping at Nordstrom this summer. So that's, that's pretty nice,
Starting point is 00:12:30 uh, to hear. It's interesting what we did. What we've determined as the high end. Sure. You're going with Nordstrom, really? Yeah,
Starting point is 00:12:37 I'll go with Nordstrom. As opposed to like, what's the low end? I mean, I mean, uh, Walmart. Okay.
Starting point is 00:12:48 Okay. Yeah. I don't know. Value Village. I, no free ads. It's not, now. No free ads, but
Starting point is 00:12:56 dollar general. I can keep going here. Not financial advice. So this kind of leads us into another discussion that I know you wanted to have today. And that's the topic of trading prospects. Right. Mairs are in a division lead by four and a half games. It's a season high now as of last night
Starting point is 00:13:18 with the Rangers losing to the Tigers. You know, when we have these discussions about the deadline it should go without saying like we are just assuming the mirrors are pretty much in the same position that they're in right now by that point right we're talking as if that is the case so assuming that is the case like jeff pass and mentioned they have to be in go mode have to be have to be this is their best opportunity to win a championship in 23 years essentially yep so a lot of people though seen it you know it's not just on twitter You see it on Reddit.
Starting point is 00:13:55 You see it in some, you know, private groups. You know, any sort of corner you can find of Mariners fandom online. There's a certain group of people that are hesitant about trading prospects, despite the great opportunity at the Mariners' hands. I don't agree with that whatsoever. I know you don't agree with that whatsoever. Floor is yours to share your thoughts on that. Yeah, you people are cowards. You're right there with John Stanton.
Starting point is 00:14:23 How dare you? you have a chance to win your first division in 20 23 years right should i just replay the the louis castillo rant from two years i mean pretty close i mean i think i'll save that for when they actually do make the move i'll just put that in the holster yeah uh but like what what do you watch in baseball for if you're not sitting here like oh the marries can go get like this all star player go do it like oh the mariners can go get like this can go get two years of this like you know five win player go do it. Like, what are you watching for? Because like this idea that like, oh, I wouldn't, Las Montes should be untouchable. Like, what? What? No one's, last. The 19 year old dude who has to
Starting point is 00:15:07 hit like 35% above league average to have any value whatsoever. That's the dude you don't want to trade. You don't want to trade Cole Young because he might be Adam Frazier. You don't want to trade Harry Ford because, oh, maybe he can catch and he had a really good two months at at double A. like really you don't want to trade those guys for a freaking all-star let's make it clear first and foremost like we like all those guys a lot very excited about them and if they do stay in the organization great awesome very excited about that but what's most important here is the 2024 ball club we're at that point now in the mayor's window where the most important marries team is the current one yeah you have a you know once or
Starting point is 00:15:52 twice in a franchise type of starting rotation right now, all of whom are controlled for the next four years plus. You essentially have the baseball equivalent of the great, good, whatever quarterback on a rookie contract. Right. But you're running out of time on that because now you have to pay Logan next year. You're going to have to pay George. You know, you got three years before those guys are making anywhere close to market value. You have to take advantage of that. And by this idea like, oh, well, the Mariners in the past, they traded, you know, David Ortiz. What does that have to do with anything that's happening here?
Starting point is 00:16:28 Are you stupid? Yes, by the way. The answer is yes. You're a moron. If you're thinking traded David Ortiz 35 years ago is the equivalent of trading Las Montes, you don't know that. Colby's in a name-calling mood today, if you couldn't tell us. It's, it boggles my mind that people will sit here eight months ago, fire Jerry to Potoh. He only wants to win 85 games a year. That's his whole goal. And then when they get a chance
Starting point is 00:16:52 to do something important and win the division and maybe make a run at a World Series, it's, oh, we can't trade Laz. He's 19. He might be Yorda and Alvarez. Oh, we can't trade Harry Ford for Boba Chet. Harry Ford could be anything. He could even maybe be Boba Chet. Like, what are we talking about? Do you want to win the World Series or do you not? Because if you want to win the World Series, shut up with this whole like, oh, there's all these untouchables in our system. No, there's obviously nuance to this. I'm not saying you go trade Colt Emerson for Tanner Scott. Nobody is.
Starting point is 00:17:26 All right. Yeah. But this idea that you wouldn't trade Colt Emerson for, I don't know, like pick the guy, like three years of this, you know, 130 WRC plus four win player. Like, why not? Don't you want to win? Why are you worried about the 2028 Mariners right now? But also, like, they've rebuilt this farm.
Starting point is 00:17:46 twice in the span of five years to one of the best in baseball. And honestly, this iteration of the farm, I think you could make a solid argument that it's at least as good as the previous iteration that had, you know, Kirby and Gilbert. Now, obviously we, you know, in hindsight now, like a lot of those guys are major leaguers, high-end major leaguers like Cal Raleigh and Julio, etc. But still. You know who was also in that group? Justin Dunn. Justice Sheffield, Evan White, Jared, Jared,
Starting point is 00:18:16 Kellnick like Kyle Lewis and there's probably a Jared Kellnick and there's probably a Evan White and there's probably a Justin Don and a Justice Sheffield in this group as well. There are 100% multiple players in this like little five six you know five six player group that people are labeling as their untouchables guaranteed fact that at least
Starting point is 00:18:38 two of them are not going to be big leaguers like for any substantial period of time. It's just how these things work. It's not to be mean. That's not to be mean spirited. Yeah. It's not because I think those players suck. It's not because the Mariners can't develop very clearly. Those things are not true. The Marys can absolutely develop. They've done it twice now.
Starting point is 00:18:54 It's just the reality. That is the numbers that we have of over like 120-some odd years of guys being these hyped up prospects and they come up and they're not good. Or it takes them four or five years. Right. So it just boggles in my mind that people look at this and they'll talk about like, oh, well, what would you want to trade Julio? No, there are exceptions. Julio is otherworldly. But this idea like, yeah, so what?
Starting point is 00:19:19 You didn't want to trade. If you could have traded Jared Kelnick two summers ago for like Ian Hap, you would have said, no, no, Jared Kelnick's untouchable. Would you have done it now? Yeah, of course you wish you would have. Right. Outside is 2020. Right.
Starting point is 00:19:35 But the Mariners are in a position right now that they have not been in in 20-some odd years. So either you want to win the World Series, you want to win the American League West, you want to make a deep playoff run or you want the 54% model. Right. And you just hope that you win the wild card a couple years and maybe one year you get really lucky. And by the way, this is all in a ticking clock because Kirby, Gilbert, Cal, those guys are all going to have to get paid sooner or later. And I think we know, just based on John Stanton in general, that they're not going to pay all three of those guys. They're going to have to trade one or two of those guys.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Yeah. So this idea that like, oh, no, just keep them and then extend everybody and just continue to build from within. It doesn't work this way. The Dodgers don't do this. The Astros don't do this. They supplement. They make trades. They're aggressive.
Starting point is 00:20:25 And you know what? Sometimes when you make big trades, you miss. That's why you have to be consistently good at developing, drafting, you know, signing and trading off. It's this cycle where you have to continue to like replenish the farm system at the, appropriate time, but also you have to use the farm system to get better at the big league level. That is what it is there for. That is it care if the Arkansas travelers win the Texas League. You don't.
Starting point is 00:20:52 Yeah. You care of the Seattle Marys win the American League West. That's what you care. That's why you're watching the show. Right. Yeah. No, absolutely. Figure it out.
Starting point is 00:21:01 Yeah. Get it together. The thing that that blows my mind, like I can wrap my head around a little bit easier, you know, the hesitancy to trade guys that are closer to. to the big leagues, but like this whole, well, you can't trade Johnny Farmelow, you can't trade Ty Pete, and again, really like those guys. I think they have very high ceilings. But this idea that you just can't trade those guys is absurd. It's absurd. The mirrors need to get better, right, by any means necessary. That's just the fact of the matter here. They have a great opportunity at their hands.
Starting point is 00:21:33 The AL West is painfully mid this year. You got to take advantage of that. And so going off of what Jeff Passon said today in his article. Seems like the Marys are willing to view of that. So whether you're like it or not, I'm just going to warn you now, assuming the Marys don't crater here over the next six, seven weeks, they're probably going to do this.
Starting point is 00:21:53 They're probably going to make a trade that for a lot of you, you know, that like these prospects, love these prospects, it's going to stink. It's going to really hurt. So let's get you set for this upcoming series with the A's. Mariner is looking to stay on a roll
Starting point is 00:22:09 off of the, coming off of the great homestand and then their first off day in 17 days. We'll see if they come out of this thing fresh and looking to take advantage of going up against a pretty weak opponent. Obviously, you know, a little pesky, but certainly a weak
Starting point is 00:22:25 opponent. So we're going to go over that in just a moment, but first a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Marries podcast is brought to you by eBay Motors. Once again, you can catch this upcoming three game set with the A's and the Marers on the Mariner's hometown broadcast, series XM via the SXM app. All you have to do to find that is search the word mariners. And that's what we're going to be talking about right now.
Starting point is 00:23:43 Three games set in Oakland day game on Thursday. We'll have a post game show for you after that one. What are your thoughts heading into the series, Colby? Yeah, tonight's going to be pretty telling. You know, you get obviously your first day off in two and a half weeks. You're on the road. There's going to be no energy in that stadium. Nobody goes to those games.
Starting point is 00:24:02 You're playing an inferior opponent. You're facing, you know, kind of a note. nobody, number five, number six type of starter. So yeah, what's the energy level going to be? Are they going to play up? Are they going to put down the A's early? Or are they going to let them hang around? And we know the A's can hit a little bit, certainly.
Starting point is 00:24:18 So these are not, you know, roll into town, roll out of bed and just get three dubs and get out of town. You've got to put up an effort here because you are facing an opponent that can hit the ball a little bit. You're facing an opponent that really has nothing to lose and they're going to go out there. They're going to play hard. even though there's nobody in that stadium. You have to match the energy of like a home series. Like you played this weekend, you have to match that energy in a stadium that will give you none of it.
Starting point is 00:24:45 Like you have to create your own juice when you go down to Oakland. And, you know, they've done that for the most part over the last couple of years. But yeah, tonight will be a pretty telling because, again, first game in a new town. Traditionally, that's been a bit of a struggle for the Mariners. But also it's Oakland where nobody's going to be at the games. You're playing a team that you know, you should beat.
Starting point is 00:25:05 You have massive pitching advantage all three games. But you let this Oakland team hang around a little bit. They're going to beat you. So, you know, we saw that last time we played them. You know, it was Saturday. You needed to make the one big pitch. They got the double and they scored two runs. It's three to one and it's over.
Starting point is 00:25:24 Right. And also, you know, obviously you don't want to be down in the eighth and the ninth, ideally because you don't want to face Mason Miller, who's been a little more human recently, but still very, very good. and Lucas Ersig. So you don't want to face those guys down. So get a lead early and just kind of step on their throats early in this game. And you have a real good chance to win all three of these games.
Starting point is 00:25:46 You know, the goal is always find a way to win the series. So even though a sweep would be nice, you know, you try to be realistic here. And Oakland is certainly not a pushover. So if you can find a way to win two or three, regardless of how it looks, go off to Kansas City, which is going to be an extremely difficult weekend series. You feel pretty good about, you know, where you're at heading into that series. But I think tonight will tell us a lot about where this team's heads at.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Yeah. You mentioned Ersug. He's actually on the IL right now. Landed on the IL a few days ago with a forearm thing. So, uh, yeah, that's brutal for him. Austin Adams still there. So still have Austin Adams. And then obviously Mason Miller is arguably the best reliever in all of baseball.
Starting point is 00:26:29 Maybe don't leave Oakland without Austin Adams. Just an idea. It would be cool if there was like a reverse Kindle Grayman situation where we get a tweet that's like Austin Adams is wearing a mirrors right now He's playing catch again Yeah again yeah I wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if it was also oh and look stuff with Brent Rooker I mean you know also wearing a mirror is that movie right oh interesting okay okay wow that would be very cool That'd be a fun day yeah um just something to think about yeah certainly certainly uh the biggest storyline for me in this series probably Brian Wu in that last game.
Starting point is 00:27:06 We'll have more, you know, another opportunity to talk about him later this week. But yeah, it's going to be, you know, keeping an eye on that arm, right? It's kind of weird that they mentioned that he didn't throw his bullpen before his last start and he had kind of an arm thing, but they still started him. A lot of questions I crop up because of that.
Starting point is 00:27:28 They seem to imply that the extra day's rest was going to be huge for him. So we'll see what that means, if anything. I think the thing I'm looking for is like, does the offense carry over after a really good weekend? Because you're facing a similar pitching staff, not in the back end of their bullpen, but you're similar rotation where it's like, yeah, you know what?
Starting point is 00:27:47 You should jump on these guys. You should score four, five, six runs. Will that carry over on the road, you know, again, in a ballpark where there's just no energy? Like my fear is that they just come out flat and they just kind of play down. And then they, you know, it's one, it's two to one or something in the seventh and then Ryan Stanick gives up a three run bomb and all of a sudden like, yep, that's a loss.
Starting point is 00:28:09 So play with some energy, jump on these guys early, make them play from behind early. And just do what you do. Pitch the heck out of it. Hopefully your starters go six and seven so you can kind of protect the bullpen a little bit. And, you know, go again, just go in two out of three against a bad team. Shouldn't be that hard to do. But baseball is incredibly hard. All right.
