Marys beat the Cardinals five to three last night.
Their magic number is now down to 15.
Big night for the bullpen.
We'll talk about them a little later on.
Big night for Randy or Rose Arena.
We'll talk about him in a second.
We'll also talk about what happened on the out of town scoreboard.
What's on tap for tonight?
All that good stuff.
But I want to start here by talking a little bit about Josh Naylor,
who hits what proved to be the game-winning home run in this one.
He goes three for four on the night and got a crazy stat here from the great Alex
mayor of Mariners PR.
186 different mariners have had 50 or more at Bats at T-Mobile Park.
The highest OPS of them all.
belongs to Josh Naler.
You know, we were all kind of assuming that he was being facetious when he said that,
you know, it's easy to hit a T-Mobile park that he likes hitting that T-Mobile Park.
You know, there was a thought that maybe he was taking a little bit of a shot at T-Oskar-Nandez
when he talked about the batter's eye that he likes the batter's eye.
I think he was actually being serious.
Seems like he really likes hitting at T-Mobile Park.
I mean, yeah, the numbers when he first came.
here didn't suggest that he did.
That's, I think, why
Musa was a joke and also,
uh-huh,
nobody likes it in the T-Mobile Park,
but,
you know,
one of the things we've seen over the last,
about calendar year,
a little more than that,
as the Mariners bring in guys
who can and have hit at T-Mobile Park.
I mean, you look at Luke Rayleigh,
although obviously Lucas had such a,
you know,
start and stop year this year.
It's kind of tough to judge's 20-25,
but Rayleigh last year
crushed Team Mobile Park.
park.
You know,
Randy crushes a T-Mobile Park,
Justin Turner.
That crushed a T-Mobile Park.
Polanco and his second go-around is sitting just fine at T-Mobile Park.
So you wonder maybe they have identified something in their,
you know,
in their process.
Off the top of my head,
I don't know how Gino is hitting a T-Mobile Park this year.
I know his numbers weren't great.
His first go-round with the Mariners, so whatever.
I'll have that for you in a second.
Yeah,
But they're hitting more of their shots when it comes to acquiring hitters who can hit at their ballpark.
And that's good to see.
And Naylor kind of epitomizes that.
So, you know, it kind of makes sense that Nader would be a guy who could hit here because we talk about this a lot.
You know, like T-Mobile Park, if you're a guy who relies on power to center field, you know, to the gaps, you hit fly balls to the gap.
Like those balls go to die, whereas Nailer is more pure pull power.
and he hits line drives from gap to gap.
So a guy like Teo who hits a lot of, you know, absolute bombs to left center and right to right center field.
Well, when they're fly balls here in Seattle, those die.
When they're line drives, they're doubles.
And Naylor gets plenty of doubles.
So it does, you know, seem like Naylor is, you know, not making a joke,
which I guess we probably should have seen coming since, you know,
Josh Naylor is maybe not the warmest person that we've ever seen.
But I was thinking maybe it was like a dry humor type of thing, you know?
Sure.
But yeah, no, I mean, he's thriving here.
In fact, he can't hit on the road at all.
He saves his hitting pretty much exclusively for Team Mobile Park,
which might be a tactic to get the extension done here
because we know how hard it is to hit at Team Mobile Park.
And if Naylor can do it, I mean, and you know he can do it,
as he's proven right now,
it makes it that much harder for you not to just pay the market price for him.
So obviously, you know,
that'll be a big discussion point here,
you know,
more towards,
you know,
at the end of the season and before he signs elsewhere,
I really don't think we're going to see an extension get done on anybody in
September,
especially not a pending free agent.
But,
you know,
it'll definitely be a discussion point for a large chunk of the,
early off season and we'll see what they do.
But yeah, Naylor is giving you everything you could hope for and then some.
And hey, you know what?
He also made a really good play at first base.
Yeah, he did.
But yeah, Josh Naylor is quickly turning himself into the priority of the offseason to retain that guy.
We'll see if they can.
I don't know if he's interested.
I don't know what their budget is.
But, yeah, Naylor is making it very difficult for the Mariners to justify not paying him.
this winter.
Yeah, like you said, the success at T-Mobile Park, and it's overwhelming success,
just adds even more fuel to the fire of this desire to extend him.
And we talked about this back when we were talking about Josh Naylor,
before you even got traded to the Diamondbacks,
that he was a really good fit for what this organization,
what this front office is typically coveted in their offensive profiles.
And now you're seeing the proof of.
concept, right? And it has been such a struggle, especially for this regime, to identify guys who
can actually hit at Team Mobile Park. It's been better, like you mentioned, over the last, you know,
a couple of years. But once you actually find that guy, you need to hold on to them. So hopefully
they're able to work something out here, you know, once the season is over and, you know,
hopefully before Naylor gets too, too tempted by what else might be out there for him on the market.
Now, you asked about A. Eugenio Swara's how he's been doing at Team Mobile Park this year.
71 played appearances so far, 129, 2, 25, 339.
That's a 61 WRC plus, so not good.
Yeah.
It does feel like the, it'd be interesting to poll Mariner fans now as opposed to, you know, right after the deadline.
Like, if you could only extend one, is it Gino or is it Naler, I think the answer overwhelmed.
seemingly would have been Gino in early August.
Now, I don't know.
Like, it might still be Gino just because he's so beloved, but it does feel like Nailer is, you know, the better fit and, you know, the better bet and the more pressing need all at the same time.
So I wonder if we've reached the point where baseball sense has taken over the emotional sense of most of the fans and they would now prefer Nail.
I know the answer is both, like, obviously.
but let's be realistic here.
They're not getting both of them back.
Probably not.
I mean,
but if you had to pick one,
I think we're picking Naylor.
And I think,
you know,
he's proving why here.
And it's been huge.
And again,
you know,
he's,
yeah,
he's struggled.
He's had moments where he's disappeared.
But I mean,
I don't know.
Like,
you need a big hit right now.
I don't know if there's anybody
you trust more to get it than Josh Naler.
You know,
even Cal.
I need a big home run.
I'm picking Cal.
I need a big hit.
Like I probably want Naylor.
He's just going to give you a pretty good at bat.
But, yeah, Josh has been incredible.
And it's probably safe top three trade deadline acquisition of the depoto era.
I don't know if he's quite at the Luis Castillo range or the Randy Rosarina range.
But he's pretty close.
And the fact that he's doing it as a rental is pretty impressive.
Speaking of Randy a Roserana, he hits a three run bomb last night.
has come back down to nothing for the second night in a row.
Randy hits it off of the guy he was traded for all those years back when he was traded
from the Cardinals to the raise, Matthew Libertor.
Randy now, that's his 27th home run.
You know, he's blown past his career high in home runs in a single season.
He's also at 27 stolen bases.
This stat also coming from Alex Mayer.
No two teammates in the history.
of the American League have gone 30-30.
Julio's already at 30 home runs.
He needs five more steals.
And then Randy needs three more home runs and three more steals.
So there's an outside shot that both of those guys could get to 30-30
and be the first ever American League duo to do that,
which is pretty crazy.
Sure.
Julio's hitting too many extra base hits to get those five steals, though.
So you better, I'll look back down a little bit.
That is wild that nobody, no teammates in the American
league you ever gone 30 30 in the same season that's pretty crazy happened in the national
league i soon yep twice twice yeah uh speaking of hollio he went oh for four last night but he had three
hard-haired balls and he had an amazing catch there in the gap lost his hat uh where does that rank
in the in the pantheon of uh julio catches for you i think it's top five for me i don't even know
if it's his best catch this week like the one he made against michael harris was really
good too.
But yeah, it's, I think of him
robbing Tatis, I think of him robbing
Santander a couple times.
The ALDS catch.
Yes, yeah, the one against Pena
and the ALDS. That's probably
number one for me, just because
of the moment and all that.
I was there, so that, you know,
persuades things probably
a little too much, but, yeah,
I think it's top
top five.
Yeah. And like this like because he didn't die for it because he didn't lay out for it.
Like it's not going to be shown on a lot of highlight reels.
That's what makes it so sick to me though.
Yeah.
Because that shows just how athletic that dude is.
Yeah.
Julio's a really, really good baseball player.
Yeah.
Stop thinking about what he's not and focus on what he is because Julio Rodriguez is a very, very, very good baseball player.
And, uh, he might finish.
top five in MVP voting. Like, it's not out of the question whatsoever. He's right there in terms of war.
And, you know, he's finishing the season on a heater and if the Mariners can make the playoffs,
blah, blah, blah, blah. It's entirely possible the Mariners finish with, you know, the runner up in the MVP race and
in another top five guy. So, yeah, Julio, what he's done in the second half is overshadowed by Cal Raleigh,
rightfully so. But, yeah, dude's been incredible. The bullpen was fantastic last night for the

Kirby was bad last night.
Only goes four innings on this
one. Frankly was very
lucky to only get through
those four innings with just three earned runs allowed.
There was that weird moment where JP pulled Nailer off the bag.
They ruled that Nailer tagged Contreras.
He didn't.
But also Contreras didn't step on first initially.
He ran over the bag.
He did go back and step on the bag.
But the Cardinals wound up not challenging it.
So that got George out of that inning.
just a weird
weird situation and a weird start and just a bad start for George
just command wasn't there
he only got three whiffs on the night
so the bullpen was tasked with covering five innings
and it's like oh that's that's scary
even against this cardinals lineup which like we talked about
yesterday not great they did get contraris back yesterday though
and so that that does help and that makes things a little bit more scary
but Caleb Ferguson I thought
had his best outing since joining the Mariners.
A couple of strikeouts for him.
The bullpen in general struck out seven.
They walked in none.
They only gave up two hits.
And frankly,
the worst performance out of the bullpen was Andres Munoz,
who was pretty wild.
But he only gives them one hit,
gets a strikeout, got through it with, you know,
fairly ease.
Now, what's going to be interesting to see
because they don't have an off day tomorrow
is how Dan manages the bullpen tonight.
But before we get into that,
just thoughts on the bullpen's performance last night.
The bullpen obviously was very good last night.
And they went to their five best guys.
Now, we could argue about whether or not those five should be your five best
in any kind of real bullpen.
They shouldn't.
But especially Ferguson.
But Ferguson was great.
And obviously,
Bizarro, just doing what he does every day.
And then, yeah, that was pretty.
probably the best we've seen MapRash all year as well.
Oh, God.
It was so gross.
You know,
and Gabe Spire pitching through sickness that was confirmed after the game by Dan Wilson.
You know, we saw him kind of, you know,
crouched down and wasn't sure what was going on there, you know,
and that's really scary.
It's a really scary sight, especially at this point in the year
and with how shaky this bullpen has been.
But it looked like he was about to throw up, it seemed, had his hand on his mouth.
I'm going to go with he had like a that so Raven moment, saw the future and he saw Matt Brash's inning because that was disgusting.
Yeah.
Gabe was a little terrifying because we also saw like 92, 93 and we saw that last year and that was injury related.
And then he crouches after the fly ball and you're just like, ooh, then he kind of throws a not very competitive pitch to Contreras, which is the play who he made the play on the ball, Julio made a play on.
So Gabe was a little iffy, but yeah, Brash right after him.
Brash pitching on back-to-back days too, which is obviously he's pitching back-to-back games this year.
But I don't know.
We've seen back-to-back outings as good as the one that Brash threw up the last two days.
Now, is he available today?
I doubt it.
But he didn't throw a ton of pitches either day.
So, you know, but Brash was just filthy.
The sliders, I mean, poor Sagasy just bailing out on every pitch.
Like, poor guy didn't have a prayer.
of hitting Matt Brash yesterday,
but the real development is that the kick change that he threw.
And yesterday he dotted it on the outside corner to a couple of lefties.
And again, if Brash has, which he does, I mean, yesterday he certainly did.
Brash had a 80 slider like his 80 breaking ball.
That kick change, split change, whatever it is,
that's probably a 70-grade pitch by itself.
So you're looking at a guy who has two, possibly three,
if you want to break the sweeper and the curve, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Like, it's kind of hard to say what brash throws.
They all look pretty similar, honestly,
and stack has sometimes even gets it wrong.
But you do that to righties,
and now you have a legitimate weapon against lefties that breaks away from them.
Everything brash throws can break away from a hitter.
And he's still got 95, 96.
It's not 100 right now.
and we'll see if he gets that below all the way back.
But, you know, it's 96 right now with some more command than when he throws 98,
and you'll take that.
So you might all that up, like, and there's still movement on the fastball, too.
Brash probably has at least 360-grade pitches and probably at least two 70-plus grade pitches.
And when he can be on the corners like he was last night, it's basically unhittable.
Like, you just have to throw your bat out there and,
hope that you catch the barrel.
That's really, you're guessing and you're hoping to get lucky is really what it is.
You know, Brash is turning back into that guy, and it's been shaky at times this year.
But his last two outings, he's looked like that dominant dude who's going to miss bats,
which this bullpen desperately needs.
They need a guy to come in and get the big strikeout, you know, with runners on second
and third and one out in the seven.
They need Matt Brash that we saw in 2023.
and he was back, or at least he has been for the last two games,
and we'll see if that continues.
But yeah, Brash was absolutely filthy yesterday.
It's almost unfair to have to try and hit that.
And now he's added another well above average to plus pitch.
I mean, good luck.
So how do they manage the bullpen tonight?
If it's not a blowout in either.
direction.
Who do you think is available?
Spire only through eight pitches and it was only, you know,
an upset stomach. I assume he feels better today.
I hope.
I mean, you never know.
So you hope spires available.
Yeah.
Ferguson will be available.
Yep.
Which.
Bizarro only threw 11 pitches and they have run him into the ground this year.
Yeah.
So I imagine Bizarro's probably available.
My hunch is that Brash is not.
Although again, he hasn't thrown a ton of pitches.
the last two days.
Just I don't recall him pitching three A's in a row this year.
Maybe he has and I forgotten,
but I don't think they're going to push him.
Munoz,
my hunch is that they really want to stay away from Munoz.
Yeah, he threw 19 last night.
Yeah.
I don't know how many you threw a lot.
I don't know how many.
16.
Yeah.
So, I mean,
it's not unreasonable to think he might be available,
but my hunches is that they will not use Brash.
He's not available.
and that they would really, really, really like to avoid using Munoz at all costs.
Yeah, Mooney through 17.
So Bizarro through 9 on Monday and 11 on, you know, last night.
So he should be in pretty decent shape.
Yeah, I think you'll have Bizarro.
If he's, you know, healthy enough to go out there, you'll have Spire.
And you'll have Ferguson.
And then it's, you know, Luke Jackson and Emerson Hancock and Taylor Suss.
Sosato.
So, Logan, buddy.
Saucato's not here.
Whatever.
Has Jose Castillo.
Oh, there you go.
Yeah.
I'm still.
Either way.
So Logan, buddy, this would be a fantastic night to go seven.
Yeah.
So, or, or offense, pals, this would be a fantastic night to score like eight or nine.
We'll talk about what happened on the out of time.
scoreboard. We'll talk about the magic number, all that good stuff in just a moment.
But first, a reminder of this episode of the Locktime Marys podcast is once again brought to you by

swipe tap ticket go download game time today and you're listening to the locked on mariners podcast
so obviously last night like i said on yesterday's episode the magic number could only go down
to 15 with a mariner's win because the royals and the guardians were playing one another so one
of those teams was going to win and one of those teams was still going to stay in the same spot as
they were yesterday so the guardians won that game which means that the royal
are now the third team out officially.
They are four games back of the Mariners now at this point.
The Guardians still two and a half back.
Rangers beat the Brewers last night as well,
so they're still one and a half back.
Obviously, the Marys have the tiebreaker over both the Rangers and the Guardians.
So the magic number can go down to 13 tonight with the Mariners win
and losses by both the Rangers and the Guardians.
if only one of those things happen, it goes to 14.
And if none of those things happen, it stays at 15.
So we'll see.
The other thing, too, the Astros had a 3-0 lead over the Toronto Blue Jays.
They ended up getting walked off.
It was 3 to 1 going into the 9th.
Brian O'Bray blew it.
And the Blue Jays wound up walking them off in extras.
So the Bears are now only a game back of the Astros.
with what,
nine days until they meet down in Houston.
So that's interesting.
And that's all I will say about that.
Moving on.
It sounds to me like the Mariners have an opportunity
to be eight games up on Houston
by the time they meet down there.
So I mean,
that'll totally happen.
I mean, if it does, if it does,
that you would, I think you would clinch on that Sunday on at their home field on ESPN.
So like, you know, stranger things have happened.
It should be worth mentioning that the injury bug hit the Astros again.
Luis Garcia had to leave that game in the second inning.
He is also, or was also in line to pitch in the Mariners series.
So we'll see what they do there.
I would assume that's either going to be Lance McCullors or JP France,
but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
And I don't even know what the severity of Garcia's injury was.
I didn't see.
I don't know what they said.
So maybe it was nothing, but.
I don't think so.
He threw a,
he threw a fastball at about 87 miles an hour.
Yeah.
That they called a change up on stack cast,
but like trainers immediately went out there and he left that.
So, you know, the sharp velocity drop is not a good sign.
we've seen it here ourselves.
Just that one random pitch drops down and you're just like,
hmm.
So we'll see.
I mean,
Garcia just got back from Tommy John.
Did he not?
Or am I thinking of?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So I think Javier also had at least an arm thing.
I don't know if he had Tommy John.
Yeah.
So we'll see how it all stacks up.
But yeah,
Garcia's departure yesterday did not sound even precautionary.
It sounded like something.
went wrong there but we'll see what happens
but yeah the the
Astros continue to be
very banged up although they do have Yordon
back so you'll be seeing Yordon
down there so
but again like let's get there
and then assess where we're at
instead of like oh we can look past the
angels and
and the Royals sure the mayors
have never struggled against the Angels or
at Kauffman Stadium before so
yeah no need to worry about those series
Yeah.
You know, it would be nice if Kansas City won tonight.
Yeah, yeah, because again, that helps with the magic number, potentially.
You know, at the very least, it gets the Guardians off your back a little bit more.
Right.
I mean, at least, you know, stop that Guardians win streak to kind of try and quell that momentum.
But, yeah, you know, it's pretty interesting.
They don't mean much, I know, but I happen to look at the fan graph.
playoffs, playoff odds after all the events of yesterday.
Houston's still favored to win the division by about one and a half percent.
Makes sense.
They're up by one game with 17 to go or however many it is.
But the Mariners have higher odds to make the playoffs in Houston.
So I thought that was kind of a little work there.
Yeah, yeah, that's interesting.
The Mariners are up to about 86%, I believe, whereas the Astros are at 80%,
but they have higher odds to win the division than the Mariners do.
So whatever.
But the Mariners are in good shape next to this four-game winning streak.
But again, in just three days' time, you could be out of the playoff picture.
So, like, it's not, it can just as easily, like, the intensity still needs to be there.
Because you are by no means in a great position to make the playoffs,
but you're in a pretty solid one right now.
and we'll see what the next, you know, a couple days brings.
And who knows, maybe by the time you go down to Houston,
maybe you only need a, you know, win one of those games
to maintain the division lead coming back home.
Or maybe you need all three.
I don't know.
We'll see how it goes.
But, yeah, Houston continuing to stumble a little bit.
Texas staying red hot, annoyingly so.
And Cleveland also red hot.
So Texas, Seattle, and Cleveland all playing really good ball over the last handful of days.
Texas obviously a little bit longer.
So not a lot of separation there.
Kansas City falling back a little bit,
but this thing is still wide open.
And you're still in the,
you're still in the sprint mode of your,
of your,
of your season and see how it goes.
But Seattle on a pretty good spot
after the last couple days.
Yeah, both Garcia and Javier had Tommy John,
by the way. I looked it up.
But yeah, you know, of course,
you know, the hottest team in baseball for the last three months goes down to Texas.
And when you need them to help you, they've lost the first two.
By the time that you're watching this, they're playing the final game of that series.
So hopefully Milwaukee can at least come away with one here.
And if the mares are able to sweep the Cardinals tonight,
then they can add a little bit more distance between them and the Rangers.
And again, get that magic number down to 13.
so long as the royals are also able to beat the guardians.
All right, that is going to do it for our show.
