On the show today, we're handing out a 2023 report card to Jared Kelnick,
and we'll be talking about the Mariners' lone gold glove nomination
and a couple of questionable snubs.
And be sure to stick around to find out how you can win some sweet autographed Mariners cards
from Colby's collection a little later on in the show.
But right now, we're going to talk about Jared Kelnick.
It was a weird year for Kelnick.
he started off incredibly hot.
He was arguably the bearer's best hitter in the month of April,
then started to fall off a little bit,
and then obviously had the self-inflicted injury that put him out for a little while.
Colby, when you look back on Kellnick's year as a whole,
what grade would you give him?
It's a little bit of an incomplete because he missed, you know,
a third of the season with a self-inflicted injury.
So I'm not quite sure how to grade that part of it.
But, you know, I think, you know, considering,
where he was in his major league career up to this point.
I don't know, like a B, I think maybe, B minus.
I feel like that's a good spot.
Yeah, because I mean like he was a two-win player,
which is an everyday big leaguer.
He did have a WRC plus of over 100.
Pretty solid defender, you know, showed the power,
stole some bags, like he was a good player.
And he also showed that, you know,
he may not need to be platooned.
he handled lefties really well.
He was actually a reverse splits guy for most of the years.
So, yeah, you know, it's a bummer at the 50 or so games that he missed.
Obviously, you know, it hurts Seattle.
But it also hurt his development.
And it kind of leaves a question mark where it's like, you know,
because it wasn't like he was a steady 110 WRC plus guy all year.
He was amazing in April.
He was in May.
he was really bad in June,
and then just when it looked like he was starting to come out of it a little bit in July,
you know,
his season gets interrupted.
And it's tough to really judge his September because it's such a small sample size
and it came after a long layoff.
So it's really tough to know how,
you know,
how the team should view Jared Kelnick entering this offseason.
But overall, I think when you look at,
you kind of try and factor in everything here,
I think B minus or B is probably where you.
land. It was a good year. It was definitely a step forward for him. It's just a little incomplete. And, you know, I feel like we were robbed of the opportunity to maybe even give him an A because if he had started to figure out like it looked like he did before the injury, he might have been a, you know, a 115, 120 WRC plus guy and he probably was a three-win player. And at that stage, you know, that that's an A for a 23-year-old or however old Kelnick is now. I think he's 23. So,
24 now
24 now
so
yeah I'll go
I guess I'll go B
minus just because of the injury
but yeah I mean it's
I think he's in that B range somewhere
yeah B minus B that's pretty much where I'm at
as well
he ended up slashing two 53
327 419 on the year
that's a 108 WRC plus 1.3F4
11 home runs
49 RBI 13 stolen bases
he did strike out
31.7% of the time, walked at 9.9% of the time.
The month of April, doing a lot of heavy lifting there, right?
He slashed 308, 366, 615 with a 169-nice WRC plus in the month of April.
And then from that point forward, he ended up slashing 235, 314, 356.
That's a 88 WRC plus.
So when you factor that, or when you pair that with the self-inflicted injury,
It's hard to know really how to feel about Jared right now.
Because again, like you said, it's incomplete.
You have the red hot April, and that's kind of skewing the numbers in a lot of ways there.
And then the rest of the year is kind of just below average to average offensively
with good defense, obviously, in a corner outfield spot.
I think at the very least, he showed the proof of concept that not all hope is lost here.
that maybe yeah he's not a star like we thought maybe could become when he was one of the best prospects in baseball but he's got the ability to be an everyday player at the major league level so you know for as far as like 2024 and what that says for 2024 i think you feel at least semi-confident just rolling with him as one of your starting three outfielders i mean you leave yourself open to other possibilities of course but if you go into 2020
and he's just you're starting, you know,
left fielder or right fielder or whatever.
I think you feel pretty good about that.
You don't feel terrible about it.
No, I mean,
so long as he is definitively your third best outfielder.
Like,
right.
Like,
honestly,
probably be fourth and it's just like,
well,
we have the DH spot.
So we can rotate the outfield through that.
But yeah,
I don't,
I don't want to be in a scenario where it's like,
well,
you have Julio and then you have Jared and then you have,
you know,
this third guy,
this veteran and Robbie Grossman or whatever.
It's like,
no,
that,
that that's not going to work, right?
You have to have something there.
But if he's your third outfielder or your fourth outfielder or whatever and, you know,
he's D-Hing and playing around the outfield four or five times a week, yeah, I think you feel
fine about that.
Because, yeah, you saw it in April.
Like, the ability to carry an offense for a month is there.
And it's just a matter of, like, can he avoid these prolonged, like, 50 WRC plus months?
in between the really good stuff.
And so we've seen it.
Obviously, you know, September Kelnick was a thing.
This year was April Kelnick.
And so we have seen pretty much in every one of his ten years with the Mariners,
every one of his opportunities, he has had a month where you look at and you go,
wow, like this guy's finally popped.
So just a matter of putting it all together now.
And I think you want to give it one more year.
Yeah.
You know, before you decide like, hey, this guy's never going to be it.
Because again, he is only 24 years old.
So I think he's still having for five more years of club control because of all the injuries.
Like I don't know if he's quite eclips the, he might be super two, but I don't think he's quite eclipsed the two-year mark of, you know, action.
So we'll see how it goes for him.
But I think Kelnick has done enough to earn a good opportunity to be an everyday player next year.
You still got to protect yourself a little bit.
But again, I don't think it, I don't think you have to.
go out and get like two everyday outfielders necessarily.
I think, you know, if you go get one really solid outfielder,
you go get, um,
that's the guy coming over from the KBO, uh,
young who Lee.
Yeah, you go get him.
Uh, and then Kelnick is like your third and then you go get like,
I don't know, Adam Duvall or maybe you go get Lordus Gurriel or whatever.
And it's like, yeah, Gurriel's kind of the DH type, like something like that.
Then yeah, Kelnick can absolutely, absolutely.
absolutely get 500 played appearances or as many as he earns early in the season and you feel
fine about it. So I think it was a step forward for Jared. Still some work to do, but again,
just 24 years old. Quite a mixed bag overall in 2023 for Kellnick, which, you know, it begets a lot
of questions still. But hopefully he's able to stay healthy this upcoming season and we get a better
look at, you know, who he is and what he can be. All right. So coming up,
out how you can win some of Colby's cards.
And we're also going to talk about Julio getting nominated for the gold glove
and a couple of the snubs that the Mariners had,
unfortunately, in the gold glove department.
In just a moment.

So Colby, yesterday we announced a new Locked-on Mariner's giveaway.
You're giving away more of your cards.
Which of your cards are you given away, sir?
Yeah, so there are four cards that we are giving away this time around.
It is a tiered giveaway as we've done in the past.
But I think we've got some good ones here.
I think we got some cards that people,
will want.
And it starts with this cool little Matt Brash Auto.
If you guys can see that if you're watching on YouTube.
And then I can't remember which is the next tier up.
But either way, we have this Brian Wu auto card.
If you guys want to see these, check them out.
They are on the YouTube if you're just listening on your favorite podcast platform.
Next up, we have this Bryce Miller auto card.
And then I think probably the big draw.
but it's up to you guys, really.
But we have this cool Harry Ford autograph card.
So hopefully planning on giving away all four of those,
but that's up to you guys.
If you want to know how to enter,
Ty is about to explain it to you.
Yeah, so all you have to do is subscribe to the Lockdown Mariners YouTube channel.
So if you're listening on a podcast platform,
head on over to YouTube.com,
type Lockedon Mariners in the search bar and just hit subscribe.
And then after that,
just leave a comment on one of our videos being posted
between yesterday and October 30th.
That's when the giveaway ends.
We'll be announcing the winners, one winner per card on Halloween.
So look forward to that.
So again, like Colby mentioned, this is a tiered giveaway.
We have subscriber goals that we want to reach.
So once we get to 9,750 subscribers, we will give away the Matt Brash card.
At 10,000 subscribers, big 10K, we are going to be given away the Bryce Miller card.
At 10,250 subscribers, we will be given away the Brice-Miller card.
we will be given away the Brian Wu card.
And at 10,500 subscribers,
we'll be given away the Harry Ford card.
So if we don't reach some of those goals by October 30th,
we're not giving away those cards.
So it's up to you guys ultimately
to get our subscriber count up there to those goals.
Tell a friend to come over and subscribe.
Tell your worst enemy to come over and subscribe.
So it's true.
Because otherwise I get to keep them all.
That's right.
That's right.
all right so feeling pretty confident i'm going to get to keep them all because most of you guys are too lazy to subscribe
sure see what i did there yeah big brain big galaxy brain all right so
willio rodriguez is nominated for the centerfield gold glove uh no surprise there for
willio uh so what do you think about his odds to win it fullby uh pretty good he was i think he was
the best hitter of the three nominated players.
So that pretty much carries the entire load.
So in terms of who's the best center feel like who should win it, I think Robert is a little bit better, but I'm not really sure what the metrics have to say about that.
Julio was fantastic.
I do wonder, you know, does Julio have that like, that like, wow, like Heisman moment type of play?
And, you know, I think people point to the Tatis home run thing where he kind of juked.
Yeah.
I don't know.
That was kind of an ordinary play.
The ball was really high.
And like I didn't think that was a spectacular play.
It was a good play, but it wasn't spectacular.
Now the home run he took away in Baltimore, that might be the highlight real catch.
And, you know, that doesn't really matter all that much.
It's just kind of something that like I think of when I think about gold glove.
Like was there a play that you just like, whoa.
And so, yeah, there was certainly that one.
But yeah, I think Julio has a pretty good shot to win.
I think that, you know, do I think he's the best center fielder in the American League defensively?
No, but it doesn't really matter how good you are defensively, as we're about to discover.
So, yeah, I think Coelio's got a good shot to win this award.
I would not be shocked.
He's also got a chance to double dip here, grab that Silver Slugger Award as well.
So I don't know how many Mariners have won a gold glove and a silver slugger in the same year.
I could take a guess.
I'm sure Griffey has.
Echiro, Brett Boone, would be my guess.
There might be some more, but I think that's probably it.
That's a good list.
Maybe Buehner.
I know he won a gold glove.
I don't know if he won a Silver Slugger,
but either way, to win both in one year would be an incredible accomplishment,
especially when you consider Julio is 22 years old.
It's kind of funny.
know, we had talked as Julio was coming up, and it was Kellnicks, the centerfielder,
Julio's the guy you're going to have to move.
And the opposite is true.
And then it was, well, I mean, how much defense are you sacrificing with Julio?
And then last year, you're like, oh, no, none.
He was fine.
He's totally average.
And then, like, wow, if he's an average center fielder for the next three or four years,
you're really playing with fire here.
And it turns out that Julio got even better defensively somehow.
And now he's a legitimate, true center.
interfielder. There's no reason to move him off the position for at least a couple more years.
And that, you know, it's, it's kind of fitting with Julio because you remember when he,
even when he was like a top prospect, people are like, oh, yeah, it's 50 grade speed.
And Julio took that personally. And now Julio's got, what, 70 grade speed.
So, and he's an elite center fielder defensively, which is not something anybody saw coming.
So Julio's resume continues to get more and more impressive.
He's absolutely deserving to win, even if he's not, you know,
technically the best center fielder.
But he absolutely deserves to win.
And if he doesn't, I'm not going to be shocked.
But I would say he's probably the favorite.
And sadly, it's because he did have such a good year offensively.
Yeah.
So he's going up against Kevin Kiermeyer and Luis Robert.
A couple of juggernauts, defensive juggernauts there for sure.
this is just a testament to the work that he's put in to become this guy to become one of the best
defensive center fielder's in all of baseball to become one of the best athletes in the game of
baseball like this itself is an amazing amazing accomplishment in its own right so yeah hope he wins
but this is like this is a massive w for him in general as well so we're going to be talking
about a couple of the guys that probably should have been nominated for the gold glit.
love for the Mariners but weren't in just a moment.
But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Mariners podcast is brought to you by

Thank you again for making us your first listen.
So, Julio was of course nominated for the American League's Center Fielder Gold Glove,
but we were expecting to talk about a couple of other names today,
or at least one name today on this show.
And unfortunately,
we're going to be talking about them,
but not because they were nominated,
unfortunately because they were snubbed.
A. E. E. E. Hennio Suarez was not nominated for the American League
third base gold glove award,
nor was Cal Raleigh for the American League Catcher Gold Glove Award.
So instead,
at Catcher, Adley Ruchman,
Jonah Heim, and Alejandro Kirk were not.
nominated. And at third base, it was Matt Chapman. Of course, naturally, we fully expected
Matt Chapman to be involved there. Alex Breggman and Jose Ramirez. But a lot of takes on Twitter
about this. So we'll get into all that. But Colby, your reaction to both of these guys not
getting nominated. I don't care. I really don't. Look, was Gino Robb? Yes, absolutely. You look,
pretty much any number you want.
You look at the range numbers.
Gino was 97th percentile and outs above average.
He had fewer errors than all of those guys with more opportunities than all of them.
Fielding percentage was the highest, like pretty much pick a metric.
Gino is at the very least deserving of finalist nod.
Unfortunately, he didn't hit.
And Matt Chapman did for like a month.
So that's enough.
And also Chapman's kind of a legacy.
So yeah, it's, it was a surprise.
It certainly was, but also not really because this is what gold gloves are.
They're meaningless.
They don't carry any value anymore because half the time they don't even get the nominations right.
I mean, let alone give it to the right person.
Gino was the best defensive third baseman in the American League this year.
I don't think that's honestly debatable when you look at pretty much any metric you want of these.
guys pregnant is a joke like at least chapman and ramirez are really good third bestman
bregman is like average maybe slightly above average like he's okay but he is not deserving of this
not it should have been gino ramirez and chapman uh and at that point any one of them could win and
i'd be like okay i i understand it but yeah uh gino got robbed uh certainly of at the very least of a
nomination he was better than those three guys i don't think it's statistic
statistically debatable.
But hey, you know what?
Those three guys are superstars and they've won a gold glove before.
And that's all that matters.
You just,
you have to hit.
And if you want a gold glove before,
there's a good chance you're going to win another one.
Because they stopped caring about this award 20 years ago when they started handing them out
to Derek Jeter,
who sucks.
So yeah,
it's a bummer,
but I can't sit here and pretend that I'm like super upset by it because I'm not
all that surprise. I actually texted
Ty when we found out that Cal Raleigh
wasn't nominated and I said, Gino's not going to get
nominated either. And
unfortunately, as is
often the case, I was right. So
you know, Pat's on back for me.
But yeah, you were right.
It's all about me. It's all about me, Ty. Yeah.
But yeah, it is
an egregious error. Something that
Gino did not have any of this year,
but it is an egregious air by
by Rawlings and, you know, the people who
side the gold glove.
Gino played 161 games.
He had the fourth fewest errors
amongst all qualified third baseman in Major League
Baseball, not just the American League, all of Major League
Baseball, and significantly fewer errors
committed than Breggman,
then Ramirez and Chapman.
All those guys were in the mid-teens
and errors. Gino had a
so errors is not a good argument
against Gino like I've seen on Twitter,
like I've seen people make on Twitter,
which it's really weird. I've seen
Mariners fans or people that claim to be
Marriors fans, like aggressively
arguing against Gino
for the Gold Glove. Arguing
in my mentions against Gino
for the gold glove. The other argument
You know why they're doing it? Why?
Because Gino didn't hit well enough for them to
support. Right. That's pretty much what
Gino ran like a 98 WRC plus or
whatever, so he wasn't good defensively.
That's the logic.
So the other argument that I've heard is
defensive runs save, which yes,
Gino was significantly worse than the
guys that were nominated in.
He had negative two defensive run saved.
I think Chapman had like plus 14.
I think Bregman was like plus 10 or something like that.
Like those guys were significantly better than Gino in that category.
But defensive run save has never mattered.
And the gold glove nominations before.
Juan Soto had a negative two DRS last year and he got nominated for right field.
So like what are we talking about?
I don't think he won.
Did he win?
Yeah, Wonsoto won.
Really?
Wow.
Yep.
and by the way,
you love those metrics that you don't know
how they're possibly quantified.
Like you can't quantify them because you don't know
the formula and whatnot.
Gino was 97th percentile and outs above average.
So which one's accurate?
I don't know.
And either do you.
You're just picking the ones that you like
is essentially how.
Hoopi won by the way.
It wasn't.
Oh,
Mooky one?
Okay.
Yeah.
Are you sure it was Leftfield?
I feel like Soto was nominated.
Left field was Ian Hap.
Okay.
Well, that's good.
At least that didn't get that didn't happen.
But I know.
But still,
DRS hasn't determined,
you know,
nominations of the past.
Like that's the point that I'm trying to make.
No,
but I'm also making the point that you're just,
not you,
but like you're just handpicking these metrics that you like because you don't
know what they mean.
Because again,
outs above average,
Gino was one of the three best third baseman in baseball.
At outs above average,
which one's more valuable?
Defensive runs saved or outs above average?
You don't know.
You,
the person saying that you know,
doesn't deserve to be nominated you don't know you don't because nobody does because defensive
metrics are honestly in a large unless they're in a huge sample size they're pretty dumb
because one year you know again j p crawford is is the worst shortstop in baseball according to
the metrics we've watched jp crawford play shortstop we know he's not a bad shortstop we know
it right he's probably average at best but like yeah i mean i'm not saying he's not deserving of a
gold glove but we know that we know that j p crawford
is not the worst defensive shortstop in baseball.
It's as ridiculous to say that he's the worst shortstop in baseball as it is to say that he should have won the gold glove this year.
Right.
Like he's just like just split the difference there.
He's probably somewhere in between.
And look, like if you want to say we're being homers about Gino, Josh Young probably should have been nominated too or at third base.
He had a very strong case to make.
So like Gunner Henderson too.
And I get like Gunner Henderson didn't have the innings accumulated to qualify at third or short.
but that's stupid.
Like he played both.
He played both shortstop and third base
at a very high level this year
and we're just going to punish him
because he didn't have the innings.
Seriously?
Like that's just like that's,
that's another issue with this award.
Bobby Wood Jr. didn't get nominated at shortstop.
Like what are we doing here?
Yeah.
Nolan Aaron Otto wasn't nominated.
Right.
At third base.
It's just like we have eyes.
Right.
And like, it just feels like we're in such a rush to like, know for a fact, like, we're going to treat defense like we treat offense and we can quantify it.
And we know for a fact how good a player was because we have these numbers.
And it's just, it's not there.
You're not there yet.
So, yeah, I just, I don't know, man.
Like it's the whole thing is a joke again, Derek Jeter 1-1.
Derek Jeter is a terrible shortstop.
Terrible.
You know, you look at Vlad Jr.
1-1.
he's awful. He's so bad at first base.
And it doesn't matter because these awards, remember I think Paul Merrill won won,
where he played like 10 games in a year and they still gave him a goal.
Like these awards are meaningless,
but the gold glove without question is the lowest value award you could possibly win.
Uh,
because the selection process is stupid.
Like they,
they don't even get the nominations right most of the time.
How are they supposed to give it to the right guy?
let alone, you know, if they can't get the knobs right.
Yeah.
I just, whatever.
It is what it is.
Again, it's a bummer for Gino because he worked very hard.
He definitely deserved to be in the conversation.
There's no question about that.
But I just, I can't fain surprise that the gold glove is, is messed up again because nobody
knows what the hell they're looking at.
Yeah.
So.
It just every year, it's astonishing how it's somehow find the way to make.
itself even more of a joke.
Again, like Bobby Wood Jr. should be nominated at shortstop.
100%.
The numbers support that.
The eye test supports that.
Like every like across the board,
everything that you could possibly take into account here in nominating guys,
like says that Bobby Wood Jr. should have been nominated at shortstop.
That Gino Swarres should have been nominated at third base.
Yeah.
So it's it's frustrating because like,
like I'm frustrated for Gino.
I'm not frustrated as a Marinus fan.
I couldn't care less to be quite honest with you.
But for the player themselves,
like it does,
it does matter.
It does matter to those guys.
And it obviously,
it helps with like things like contract negotiations
down the line and stuff like that.
And sometimes,
you know,
incentives are tied to awards.
So,
I hope nobody's dumb enough to put gold glove incentives
into their contracts.
Right.
Like,
that's a bad agent who puts those in.
Right.
So,
you know from that perspective
I feel for Gino I'm disappointed
for Gino I'm frustrated for Gino
and I'm frustrated for Cal because Cal had a
had a great year defensive
it was kind of a mixed bag especially you know
in the first half but towards the second half he was
I mean show me a catcher who was playing better
defense than Cal Raleigh in the second half especially
those like the last six weeks
of the season just a ridiculous stretch that
that Cal went on from behind the plate
the fact that he had to play so much and the rapport
that he has with all those pitchers a lot of different
styles in that pitching staff both in the rotation in the bullpen like cowl had a fantastic
year defensively and the numbers also support that as well um you know nothing against adly and
jonaheim and alexandra kirk but uh you know i feel like cal should have got more uh consideration
there than he wound up getting all right anything else before we get out of here colby
