Kate Anderson gets the win in this one, going six innings for the first time in his career, allowing one run on a Jake Berger's solo home run. It winds up allowing six hits in total on 10 hard-to-hit balls, which is not great, but five strikeouts. And a walk, bit of a regressive start, though, for Anderson's fastball with the lowest average spin rate out of his first four starts and a dip to just,

Starting point is 00:01:05 15 inches of induced vertical break. However, his secondaries, mostly pretty good in this one. So Colby, what did you make of Cade's outing? I mean, it was good. I mean, statistically speaking, his best outing.

Starting point is 00:01:22 I think the outing he had against the Cubs was a little more impressive considering the quality of the opponent and whatnot. But here he is facing a team who's in the middle of a playoff race pitching for a team that is basically choked away any shot they had at the playoffs over the last couple of weeks.

Starting point is 00:01:40 And, you know, it's kind of an empty crowd a little bit today. The vibes are definitely not, you know, with the Mariners, they're across the street a little bit there. And he went out there and he threw the ball well. He didn't dominate. But he really, you know, you mentioned 10 hard hit balls. Not a lot of traffic in this one, though. It's kind of the important thing there. So, yeah, he had some bad, bad bit luck in his last couple starts today.

Starting point is 00:02:04 he maybe had a little bit better Babbat Buc, but there really weren't that many innings where the Rangers really threatened to, you know, get back in this game or blow this game open. And the few times that they did, Cade was able to navigate it very well. And he was able to do it without his best fastball. The fastball stuff is going to be inconsistent for his next couple starts. That's just the way it goes this winter. He'll throw a ton with the major league ball and he'll figure something out there. I'm not worried about the fastball value for Cade. But I did think that the off speed stuff was better today, including the change up, which I can tell.

Starting point is 00:02:34 to believe is going to be a really important pitch for him. He sailed a couple high in a way as he's done, and he left a couple in the middle of the plate that he got away with. But it's because of his willingness to throw that fastball, regardless of what the metrics say about it, that really sets up that change up. Well, he had a, you know, absolutely filthy strikeout of Corey Seeger on a curveball.

Starting point is 00:02:56 He struck out Jake Berger in kind of a big moment with a changeup. So, you know, again, not a ton of value out of the fastball in terms of and yeah, the induced vertical went down, as you would expect, with a lower spin rate. But he was still able to throw that pitch for strikes. He was able to get, you know, steal strikes with it. And he did not leave too many of those in the middle of the plate, minus the Jake Berger one. So, yeah, the fastball was still effective. And one thing he did a lot better today than he has done at any point this year is he

Starting point is 00:03:25 threw strike one. He had his highest first pitch strike rate of any of his starts, I believe 71% today. And he got ahead of these guys. And, you know, these Cade starts have kind of started to follow this kind of, you know, path where it's like, hey, first time through the order, pretty good, usually throws up a zero. Maybe he struggles a tiny bit, but pretty good. Second time through, he'll just kind of randomly lose his control. And he'll walk a guy or two.

Starting point is 00:03:53 And he kind of has to like grind through and then he'll give up kind of the fluky hit. And then it's like, uh, we're in trouble now. And then the third time through, that's typically when he really starts to struggle. and guys started to hit the ball hard off of him. But today, you know, first time through pretty good, minus the burger at bat, second time through. He did lose, he did have one four pitch walk in this game. That's not ideal, certainly.

Starting point is 00:04:15 But that was it. Really didn't struggle after that. And he was able to get through the lineup two and a half times and give you six innings that you really needed on just 80 pitches after Bryce Miller was able to go four innings yesterday on 85 pitches. and the bullpen as bad as it has been. Every inning they have to cover is a disaster. And fortunately for you,

Starting point is 00:04:38 K today was able to give the Mariners six and the Mariners were then able to run out their three best relievers. Unfortunately, two of those guys are Sir Anthony Dominguez and Gabe Spire. You'd like to have those guys a little bit further down on the pecking order, but what are you going to do? You're just kind of trying to finish this season out before Munoz came in and absolutely slammed the door.

Starting point is 00:04:57 That change up for Munoz is, man, that's a game changer right there. But Cade was very good. Again, it was aggressive. The breaking stuff was a little bit more consistent today than it was against the A's and his last outing. I thought the change up took steps forward. And we kind of saw the classic kind of like bulldog mentality that Cade has because

Starting point is 00:05:17 if you look at the numbers in the sixth inning, as he's trying to finish that game off, his VILO went up in that sixth inning. So it wasn't a guy who was running out of gas. it was a guy who was able to find it and, you know, get the big strikeout to end his, two strikeouts, actually. I believe he cade, Langford and Berger, right, for the last two outs of his outing with the runner on second, I believe. So, yeah, Anderson, very good today.

Starting point is 00:05:43 Kind of saw a little bit of everything that he has to offer and still understanding that he's got more to go. He's got more to get. The fastball value will get there. He will get more consistent with the change up. It was just nice to see him be aggressive in the strike zone, early in counts, get ahead of guys, attack them, put them away. And again, the few times that Texas really had an opportunity to, you know, put some runs up on him, he really bared down and was able to make big pitches and big spots and secure his first major league win.

Starting point is 00:06:11 And also show the Mariners a lot of the kind of, you know, bulldog ace-like mentality that he had when they drafted him number three overall. And he was able to do it again against the division rival who has owned you this year coming off of another terrible loss when your bullpen desperately needed him. he was able to get that done. And I think that speaks volumes about who Kate is and who he can be going forward. So it was a very, very impressive outing for Kate, who, I'll remind you, only had like 90 innings in the minors, 90 professional baseball before he made his major league debut. I don't care how highly touted you are.

Starting point is 00:06:44 That is not a lot of time to figure things out. And Kate's kind of trying to figure some of this out at the big league level. And he did a really nice job with that today. Yeah, had a battle a little bit. And like you said, you know, had a bit better bab of luck than he's had in the past because is, you know, the 10 hard hit balls and he didn't really pay the price for for most of those, you know, made, made a few mistakes over the heart of the plate, you know, the one to Burger he pays the price for, but, you know, he made a mistake to Corey Seeger later on on a slider

Starting point is 00:07:11 that he hung in the middle of the plate. Fortunately, Seeger fouled that off, you know, just a couple other mistakes here and there over the course of the day. And then obviously there's the fastball issues that we've talked about and that led to some of the hard hit balls that we saw over the course of the day. But overall, I thought he really battled and then shoves when he absolutely needed to. I thought it was a very, very impressive start from Kate Anderson today against the lineup that not many guys on this Mariners pitching staff have been able to crack the code on.

Starting point is 00:12:00 So yeah, I'm glad the mayor is won. Cool, awesome. You know, nice little three to two win against a division opponent. But at this point, you know, going into today, they're down seven games. What I really care about here is the fun factor. And Michael O'Royo and Lazaro Montas had a lot to the fun factor of this team. And neither of those guys were in the lineup today. So, like, there was still some fun factor because obviously Cade started.

Starting point is 00:12:26 But, yeah, when I saw that lineup today, I, I, I had a lot less interest in this game than I thought I was going to have going into today. Yeah, not really sure why Michael O'Royo didn't play today. Las eventually got into the game, doubled, fought off a pitch, was able to get a double out of that. Not the most impressive piece of hitting we've seen from him, but, you know, that's high bar. Yeah, but still, you know, contributed today. And so that's fun. But, yeah, did see Michael O'Royo.

Starting point is 00:12:59 and instead, you know, watch Taylor Ward, who like, to his credit, had a good day, you know, had the RBI, had the RBI. Also had a big walk with two out, yeah, with two outs, which led to Cole Young's two run double. So it was a good day, but still. Yeah, it was a good day for Taylor Ward, but like seven games out, however many games we have left. So I don't really care to watch Taylor Ward at this point, frankly. I guess, but also it's a veteran who's going into free age. agency and it's like, okay, let's, I mean, to me, like, you could still find a way to get a Royo in there and also Ward. It's just kind of this like delusion that like, oh, we're still in it.

Starting point is 00:13:38 So we have to maximize our, our lineup every day. No, you don't. No, you know, you're not in. Yeah. Like you're, you're, you lost that, that right to, to pretend that you were in it, you know, really this weekend. Uh, when you drop three or four to the A's. So, uh, let's, let's, let's in the charade or charade if you're pretentious. And, uh, let's go ahead and, like, let's look the young guys play.

Starting point is 00:13:58 Now, Laz not starting today. Kind of get it. He's never been very good against lefties. Lefty on the mound today. Texas has got a lot of lefties in their bullpen. That being said, Bradford's not exactly the most dominant,

Starting point is 00:14:11 tough lefty that you're going to find. So if you're going to give Las any Fats against lefties, it's kind of a good guy to give him one. But whatever, okay, fine. Laz is the plane because there's a lefty and he's not good against lefties and we don't want to put too much on his plate. Like, okay, fine, whatever. There's really no reason for Royo not to be in the lineup.

Starting point is 00:14:27 And I remind you, again, Weston Wilson played third base in this game. Like, it's not just that Taylor Ward played in this game. It is that Weston Wilson played in this game. And frankly, I don't care how bad you think Michael Oroyo would be

Starting point is 00:14:42 at third base or how bad you think he'd be second base. Well, I think the solution there is more so Young to short, JP to third. Yes, exactly. Exactly. But still, but still, even if you don't want to do that, you don't want to move Cole Young for some reason or JP for some reason. I would still rather

Starting point is 00:14:58 have Michael Arroyo play third base left-handed, then watch Weston Wilson swing the bat ever again for the Mariners. And I want to see a Royal hit, particularly against lefties. And this is a very good matchup for him. When you look at Bradford, this is a good matchup for him, a guy who's trying to get his first major league hit. And so far, you've given him four at bats in three days.

Starting point is 00:15:19 And you're going to put him in the lineup tomorrow against Jacob to Grom. This was the spot to use him. And it is kind of funny, though, because like the two spots that you would traditionally think to use. them second base well Cole young had the game winning rbi i double to rbi double taylor ward out in right field well taylor ward had the game tying rbi single and and so you know it's kind of one of those things but weston wilson didn't do anything today i mean randy had a double but you could dh randy god forbid you give him a d h day like there was plenty of opportunities to get him in

Starting point is 00:15:48 the lineup and they just chose not to and it just doesn't make any sense why call him up at all if you're not going to start him in this game like that makes no sense you're going to have them pinch hit once every three days and that's supposed to do anything for him. Yeah. It doesn't make sense. It was just foolish. It just feels like you're wasting time. Like you're just wasting an opportunity here to collect data because that's what's

Starting point is 00:16:11 most important now at this point. It's collecting data on guys, giving guys some runway. You just got to recognize what the situation is at this point. Be real with yourself. Like Michael Oroyo and Lazaro Montes should be playing almost every day for the rest of the season. they certainly shouldn't be playing every other day. And honestly, it really shouldn't even matter what the matchup is.

Starting point is 00:16:32 I don't care. Just give them playing time. Again, if it's about trying to protect them from particularly tough matchups, fine, whatever. If the mayors were facing Chris Sale, and they're like, hey, let's not have Las. Like, fine, but this is Corey Bradford. Before we get out of here, got to talk about that Lazz home run last night. My God. That's what the longest. the longest home run

Starting point is 00:16:55 in the stat cast era at T-Mobile Park. He cleared the J-Rod squad, Colby. He cleared it. He hit it to the concourse and right center field. I have spent a lot of games sitting in the back row

Starting point is 00:17:11 of the J-Rod squad. It is a long way from home. You're like, yeah, I'm choosing to sit here knowing there's zero percent chance I'm going to get a ball. A dead center field in a cool night in September, by the way, in Seattle. Like the ball is not going to carry at all.

Starting point is 00:17:28 And then all of a sudden, like, not to death's center field. It doesn't carry. And that ball cleared the J. Rod's score. It almost took out somebody on the concourse. 474 feet, was it? 474. 116 miles per hour off of the bat.

Starting point is 00:17:51 So, yeah, like, obviously, we've seen the deficiencies and Laz's game quite a bit. We've seen a lot. Yeah, we've seen the swing and miss. He's only running a 71% end zone contact rate right now. Which honestly is better than I thought it would be. Not counting today,

Starting point is 00:18:05 going into today, though. I don't know what it is. He had a couple whiffs in the zone. Well, yesterday. So that, yeah, today I don't like you whipped in this.

Starting point is 00:18:11 No, the first pitch. He swung and missed. It was just in the zone. Yeah. So I don't know what it is now after today. It's honestly higher than I thought it would be, though. Yeah.

Starting point is 00:18:19 But, um, he's chased. But, but, but there is the proof of concept with laws of Romantus. it's been just about everything you could have guessed a las montez cup of coffee in september would be because his two home runs have been to dead center field in traditionally

Starting point is 00:18:35 extremely difficult places to hit home runs to dead center field in uh both of them have been absolute nukes and he's also looked completely overmatched for like seven eight you know played appearances in a row and then the k rates high and he's not making nearly enough contact in the zone and then you're just just when you're like oh man this guy just nowhere club boom oh okay yeah no okay i i get yeah yeah so again i don't know how much you're actually going to learn in september like in regards to how good i feel about this guy being on the opening day roster next year i think if he is you failed but regardless that's a conversation for later but yeah the proof of concept like the the idea of like this is

Starting point is 00:19:22 probably who last is most likely to be. Honestly, we're seeing it play out. It's such a small sample size. Things are probably going to get worse at points. They'll probably get better at other points. But like he's striking out a lot. He's hustling, got a couple hustle doubles. He's worked some counts.

Starting point is 00:19:37 He's able to draw a couple good walks and have some long at bats, but he's still whiffing at fastballs up in the zone. That's a real struggle for him. And then when he does, when you make a mistake, though, you try to go upstairs and you leave it kind of middle. Yeah. Heads up. Kissy goodbye.

Starting point is 00:19:56 Yeah, he's He's electric. He's going to get some pitchers Whiplash. They may have a fastball in the middle of the plate. That was The most impressive home run I've seen. I think that's more impressive than going to the third deck in right field.

Starting point is 00:20:13 And I mean, that is his first home run in that ballpark. Again, to dead center field. And that's what he does. He has the concourse. He clears the train rod squad. Oh, man. Yeah, to me, that's more impressive than hitting it in the third deck.

Starting point is 00:20:32 And they talked about that today. How many guys have hit it into the third deck at Team Gold Park? And the list is like eight guys. Cowrale did it last year. Luke really did it a year or two before that. They'll go back famously. If Las Montez is here long enough, like if he has a long enough career in Seattle and he's not traded, he will join that list without question.

Starting point is 00:20:51 but he's also probably going to take out a couple windows of the former hit-a-hear cafe while he's at it. Yeah. Boy. All right. That is going to do it for our show.
