Mariners sweep the Cardinals walking them off four to two last night.
The mayor's bullpen and infield defense was sensation.
Leo Rivas proved yet again why he should be in the lineup with consistency.
And the mayor's magic number is now down to 14.
We'll talk about all of it on the show today.
But Colby, if I asked you yesterday,
what is the one thing that just absolutely cannot happen in this game?
I would assume Logan Gilbert going five or fewer innings would be at the top of that list.
But that's exactly what happened last night.
Logan only goes four and two thirds in a start that we have seen.
far too many times from him this season,
where gets a bunch of whiffs,
gets a bunch of strikeouts,
limits of damage to only one run allowed,
but that pitch count balloons,
he gets into a lot of deep counts,
loses some of those deep counts,
either walking a guy or giving up a hit.
And as a result,
he can't go deep.
And this was not a game,
at least on the surface,
where you felt like he could afford to do that in.
Because entering the game,
game. We weren't sure if
Andreas Munoz was going to be available
if Edward Bizarro was going to be
available and if Matt
Brash was going to be available.
Yeah.
And sure enough, they didn't pitch in this game.
So you have
guys like Jose Castillo
and Luke Jackson and
Emerson Hancock throwing
high leverage innings.
I'm sure that went well.
And the Mariners bullpen goes
eight and a third. They basically threw a full
game on their own.
They only give up two hits.
They walk no one.
They strike out six.
And the only run they give up
is the automatic runner there
in the 11th inning.
Crazy.
I still can't believe that that actually happened.
I'm not sure that it did.
It was very late last night.
I might have fallen asleep and just dreamt that.
Yeah.
Probably not. I think that probably
happened because we all had the same dream.
if not else.
But yeah, crazy, crazy situation.
You know, really a funny game all around because you needed your stars to step up yesterday.
We talked about it.
You need Logan to go seven.
You need the offense to score 10.
Like one of those things has to happen.
Neither of them even came close to happening.
Julio, Julio failed multiple times at the plate.
Gino failed multiple times at the plate.
Naylor failed multiple times at the plate.
They didn't even.
give Cal a shot, which, by the way, 100% the right decision on their part.
And Randy failed a couple of times as well.
Like all of your stars had multiple opportunities to win this game for you.
And they all failed.
And the stars in your bullpen, they very clearly didn't want to use them yesterday.
Kind of understandable.
Also kind of like, you know, like this is a what you got to win.
You got to win.
Texas one.
Houston one.
You kind of have to win.
So, yeah, just a very weird game all around.
And, of course, it's the afterthoughts that come up and, you know,
clutch out a win for you.
It's not Munoz and Brash.
It's not, you know, a Rosarena and Julio.
No, it's Leo Rivas and it's Emerson Hancock and it's Luke Jackson.
How many of you guys thought, remember Luke Jackson was on the team before yesterday?
Yeah, put your hands down, you liars.
Jose Castillo.
Did you know Castillo's first name when you were watching?
in pitch. I bet you probably didn't. So
I mean, Ty didn't even realize he was on the team until he made his debut in Atlanta
three days ago.
Yeah. Yeah. To be fair, yesterday, you thought Taylor Sossato was still here.
Yeah. I mean, that's because they don't use that portion of the bullpen.
Yeah. Like, it's correct. Like the furthest down they go on their rung is,
is Caleb Ferguson, who had another nice outing, by the way, gets lost in the shuffle.
Yeah. Because, you know, it happened in like the sixth.
Yeah. I mean, Carlos Vargas,
Gabe Spire, Caleb Ferguson,
like they were all part of this thing as well.
It's just, you know,
those final five innings covered by Jose Castillo,
Luke Jackson,
and Emerson, Ancock kind of take precedent here
because of just how unlikely it was.
Right.
So, you know,
the unfortunate thing is,
is that one of them might be losing their job,
quote unquote,
because of how well they threw last night.
Yeah.
Yeah, you need fresh arms.
You mean, yeah,
you probably need fresh arms.
Now, the interesting thing here is that the only guy in this bullpen with options is Emerson Hancock and Matt Brash, but you're not sending out Matt Brash.
So it's like if you want to move on from, you know, you want a couple, Luke Jackson's not going to be available for a couple days.
You have to DFA him to send him down.
You have to help he clears waivers and the Texas Rangers aren't letting anybody leave Seattle without a one-way trip.
I mean, now maybe that's not the worst thing in the world, but like,
Yeah, so if you want to make a roster move, you kind of have to send down Emerson Hancock, who threw two scoreless yesterday and got the win.
In relief, you'd have to send him down for 10 days before you call him back up.
So you're kind of in this weird situation with the roster.
We'll see how they handle it.
But yeah, those guys were, they came up huge last night.
And, you know, you still, they might not have to make the move because they should have Bizarro.
You should have Munoz.
They should have Brash.
Spire, Ferguson have each pitched each of the last two days, I think.
So they're probably not available.
Vargas is probably okay.
Castillo should be okay.
Castillo should be fine.
Maybe Hancock, maybe.
Jackson is definitely not.
So we'll see how many, if they do make a roster move today.
But yeah, those guys, they threw the ball very well.
They were aggressive in the strike zone.
And, yeah, it helps that they weren't exactly facing a murderer's robe and offense.
because that and also they got some big help from their defense we'll talk about that in a second but
what were you going to say no i mean like it just helps that the cardinals are not the cardinals
at the past there's no brinand donovan here you know there's no nolan aranato like i mean not that
aernado's been great but whatever uh you're you're facing
by thomas de gasey who you actually really struggled to get out yesterday and you're
you have four hits last night yeah uh like you didn't even have to have to
face Mason win. You didn't have to face Contreras in game one. It's just not the same Cardinals
team. And that certainly contributed. And by the way, we saw probably the worst inning of base running
in the history of Major League Baseball. Afon Harare. Yeah. Was that in the 10th or the 11th?
I think it was 11th. Okay, the 10th. Just the worst base running you've ever seen in your entire.
He handed you the game. And then the mayor's offense was like, no, we don't want to. No, no, no, no.
Yeah, so you got a little lucky at some points.
Sure, this bullpen, they didn't strike out a ton of guys,
which is typically what you want in those situations.
But they were just really good.
I mean, they got ground ball outs.
They got soft pop-ups, you know,
and they avoided hard contact for the most part.
Yeah, only seven hard hit balls given up by the bullpen over the course of those
eight and the third.
So the bullpen, again, to do what they did,
regardless of the opponent, without, you know,
three of their four best leverage arms available to them.
In a tight game, obviously went 13 innings with an inept offense who just may as well
gone up to the plate blindfolded for 12.
Especially Julio on those two at best.
Jesus.
You had a pretty nice day before those two at-bats.
And then it's just like, oh.
Yeah, yeah.
Cool.
Yeah, no, I didn't miss 2024, Julio.
I really did.
Oh, yeah.
April Julio.
decided to show up all of a sudden.
I was like, it's not great.
So, yeah, it's, I mean,
Cole Young had some bad at bats too, boy, but, but we'll talk about that a little later on.
Yeah, the bullpen was exceptional.
And it is, it's one of those things where it's kind of the beauty of baseball, you know,
is that you just can't keep throwing the football to the same guy over and over again and have him lead you to victory.
You got to use guys on your roster.
And it's funny, this team.
team, Dan Wilson in particular, has been very hesitant to use these type of players with any kind of
regularity. He's always leaning heavily on his starters. And to a certain extent, that makes sense.
But at some point, you have to trust the guys on your roster and you have to use them.
And last night, it was those guys, Dan Wilson's afterthoughts, who went out there and won him a
baseball game to keep the wind streak alive, to stay game and a half up on Texas, to stay within a game of
Houston. It was the guys that he just doesn't believe in who came through and the guys that
he has relied on day after day after day who fell flat on their faces. And that's baseball.
And that's what makes baseball awesome, even when it's the worst thing you've ever watched
like last night was for like 12 innings. So yeah, it's the beauty of the game and it's
funny to see. And it happens a lot. You know, these guys that nobody expects anything from,
they come up big and they win you baseball games.
And you kind of need that.
In years, if you want to make a deep postseason run, it feels like those teams,
there's always one guy who just kind of comes up late in the year or just kind of, you know,
gets hot at the right time and just kind of carries.
It's the Stephen Pierce's.
It's the Travis Ishikawa's.
Daniel Murphy.
Right.
It's guys like that.
And sometimes it's a really good player who sometimes, you know, a good player who becomes
a great player for a month.
Sometimes it's a guy who doesn't have a role all year who just gets hot.
and Leo Revas, like it's Jake Myers.
It's somebody like that who you're not really expecting anything from who just steals the spotlight for a month.
And you ride that hot streak to, you know, deep playoff run.
And you need games like this to kind of show that there are other people on this team who can help you if you just give them the opportunity to.
And so for those guys to step up is massive.
It's huge.
And it does hopefully send a.
signal that you know we can help this team we can be a part of the solution for one night at least
it was the other guys who who stepped up in one you a baseball game in the middle of a pennant race
and that is always cool you know with heartbreaking losses it's common to say you know hey if
they miss the playoffs look at that game right this is a game where if they win the division
look at this game.
So I want to give some love to the Mariners Enfield defense.
And then we'll talk about Leo Rivas, his big swing last night and why he should be playing more in just a moment.

So again, the mayor's bullpen
was sensational last night,
but not without the help of
some stellar infield
defense. Gino Suarez made a couple
of big plays. JP obviously
had that big diving stop. Josh
Naler, I thought, had a fantastic
game at first base.
an incredible game at first base and i don't think anyone's really going to be talking about that
aspect of it uh once again like josh neeler incredibly smart baseball player the way that his footwork
over at first base is elite his awareness his ability to protect himself and the runner it's just so
impressive and that showed up in a big way last night i mean jp had some wild wild throws and
not only was Josh able to snag those balls,
he's also able to keep his foot on the bag as well.
Josh Naylor was fantastic last night at first base.
Yeah, I mean,
it doesn't always show up.
And defensive metrics for first baseman are terrible.
Like they don't really factor.
I mean, we watch Evan White for a year,
arguably the best defensive first base move ever seen.
And he had negative, you know,
negative run value by Fangraph's defensive scores.
and Matt Olson's elite over there,
and he has negative run values a lot of the time.
So don't look at defensive value when it comes to first baseman.
Just you kind of have to watch the game.
And obviously, Nailer had a big play the night before as well,
and then all the scoops he made here in this game.
And it just got to the point where I was like yelling,
like, can somebody just hit him in the chest?
Like, for the love of God, this guy's going to pull a hammy or something
stretching for these baseballs.
JP tested him several times over yesterday.
So, you know, he made the one nice big play.
But, yeah, he, it was not a good night overall defensively for JP.
But obviously, he made the big play that he needed to.
And Gino had a great night as well.
You know, the reaction time, the range for Gino, not what it used to be,
but he could still pick it a little bit over there.
And Naylor is there to clean it all up.
you know, it's interesting one of the, like the mirrors have had pretty good first base defense over the years.
Ty France is pretty good over there.
Evan White, obviously, like the best we've ever seen, even if it was for only a short period of time.
And now Naylor, but, you know, the thing I like about Naylor is we talked about this, the play he made yesterday,
where he didn't tag the runner, he didn't tag Contreras and they didn't.
Monday.
Yeah.
Yeah, Monday.
he like I think
it was Tuesday it was Tuesday it was Tuesday
I think whatever I still think that's a good play
even though he didn't tag him
because Nailer understands I need to come off the bag
I need to protect myself a little bit
because that's the exact play that you know
messed up Ty Francis elbow and may have
altered the trajectory of his entire career
is that play going for that ball
and trying to stay anchored on first base
and make the tag at the same time and Nailer just says
no I'm you know I'm gonna protect myself here
if I happen to tag him
fine, but if I don't, like, I'm not going to lock my arm in and have him run straight into it.
Like his, like you said, his footwork around the bag, knowing how to protect himself and the runner,
knowing when to, you know, go for a ball between first and second and knowing when to just stay put
and cover your base.
These are all little things that don't really show up when we talk about first base defense.
And we don't spend a lot of time talking about first base defense because objectively,
it is the least important defensive position on the entire field.
It just is.
you can live with bad first base defense.
But the difference between really good defense and really bad defense is noticeable
because we watched Luke Rayleigh for a little while here.
Luke Rayley is an objectively bad first baseman, just bad at it.
And Josh Naylor is pretty good at it.
I don't even think Josh Naylor is elite at first base.
But he had himself a great game last night and he shows he's more than capable there
and he understands the position.
And that's one of the more important things.
All the intricacies, all the nuances, he understands it.
And it makes a big difference in situations like yesterday where, again,
he picks up JP a couple of times.
Like JP and Gino, they had great range yesterday.
And, you know, they got some balls that we didn't think they could.
That doesn't really matter if they spike it in the dirt and it gets by Nailer or
they airmail Nailer.
And he was able to handle all of it multiple times.
So even though Josh didn't get it done at the plate, he certainly contributed.
did to the win yesterday with all his great plays at first.
And again, JP has taken a step back defensively.
He is not even average at the position.
He's well below average.
Yeah.
Can still make a play like he made last night every once in a while.
That just kind of makes you go, huh.
Like, you still got the highlight real play in his bag.
Sure.
I mean, like, for example, the ball that, the one run that the Cardinals scored in extras,
ball gets under JP's club.
You got to keep that in the infield.
Like I know it was hit hard.
I understand it went right under your glove.
Your only job is to keep the ball in the infield.
And that's poor reaction time.
That's poor range on JP's part.
So even when JP has these highlight real plays,
there are still other plays that he doesn't make that he should.
And they don't get highlighted because it's a tough play.
You're playing shortstop.
You're supposed to make the tough plays.
So I still worry about this infield defense.
I still worry about the outfield defense when Robles isn't out there in particular.
Yeah.
But last night, it was very good.
And it was a huge part of the ballgame.
It was a huge factor in the ball game.
And it has to be good.
When you don't have your high leverage swing and miss guys out there,
you have to make plays behind the Castillo's and the Jackson's and the Hancocks.
And they did.
So, you know, kudos to them.
The defense did play a major role last night in this win.
And that's a little bit different.
We haven't seen the Mariners really, you know, win games with their gloves this year.
It's been the home run ball.
It's been the strikeout.
It's been, you know, the walks and the grinded out at bats and the big
innings and all that.
Haven't really seen them just, you know, take away hit after hit after hit in a game like this.
I can't remember a game like this all year where they were just taking away hits left
and right.
So, and kudos because they needed to because Logan was not sharp.
There was base runners all over the place early and obviously late.
Any one extra hit could have, you know, cost you that ballgame.
So really good night for the boys.
And I'm sure Perry Hill was very happy.
with what he saw.
Absolutely.
All right.
We have gone way too long without talking about the guy that put both
Cardinals fans and Mariners fans out of their misery last night.
Leo Rivas.
Leo Rivas, totally known for his power.
It's a two run jack.
There was a,
there was a stat that Sarah Lange's posted last night.
Leo Rivas is the fourth player in Mariners history with a walkoff
home run for his first or second career home run
joining Phil Bradley
Jeff Clement
and Deho Lee
that's right, Dejo mentioned on the show
let's go my goat
let's go
that's one good player and two bad ones
Bill Bradley being the only good player
that is a hell of a list you shut your mouth
that is a hell of a list
yeah so not only
is Leo Rivas
up there and not only is he swinging in a situation where you just assume that Dan Wilson is going
put on the bun sign he's going to butt there just need one run to win in that situation
yeah and the second time he's up there first pitch swinging and he goes yeah yeah crazy
Leo Rivas needs to play more I don't know why he wasn't on this team for most of the year
I do not get it.
And now look, sometimes you're going to have polo play second and Mitch Garver's going to
D.H against lefties and he want to try and get Dom Kanzone and Luke Rayleigh in there, fine.
But Leo Rivas should probably be getting most, if not all of the ad bats that Cole Young is getting right now.
Because Cole Young had a three hit night on August 15th against the Mets.
Since then he has two hits.
And he was awful last night.
and that's and and that's aside from the awful but attempt that he had he was just really bad last night
i mean you just shouldn't be asked to bun he's not good at it like that that that more than anything
it's the most annoying part of that decision including that three hit game since august 15th
cole young is slashing 106 218 213 yeah leo rivas should play over him
I mean, honestly, you want to give Cole Young a game or two here and there down the stretch.
Fine.
Leo Riva should play shortstop on those days.
He's a better defender than JP anyways.
I would send Cole Young back down.
Call up Williamson.
That part doesn't really matter.
Just get Cole Young some consistent playing time while you still can while the rainiers are still playing.
Sure.
Call him back after that.
Yeah.
But yeah, Williamson, Masterbony, whatever.
doesn't matter. Taylor, whatever.
Yeah. That's what I would do.
Sure. Yesterday, both Rivas and Victor Robles
were on the bench, I don't think that can happen. There's a different energy when
one or both of those guys is in the
lineup. There's, you know, and Robles hasn't been very good
like really this year at all.
Granted, it's extenuating circumstances, but
there's just an energy. There's a different, there's just something
different that they bring to the game that really,
you can't get from from canzone or cole young or any of those guys right now and that's not to say
those guys haven't helped certainly they have but you got to start going with the hot hand here you
got to start playing your best players and right now leo rivas is definitely better than cole young
and he's probably better than j p crawford yeah it's uh it really is just a different energy
with those guys um and right now it's not like dom canzones hitting much to justify his spot in the
He had a good night last night, but yeah.
Yeah.
But in general, like...
By Burleson and left. It was funny.
Yeah, yeah.
Terrible route.
Just makes a leaping jump at the last second and catches the ball.
Wow, what a play.
It's like, nope.
Yeah, he, but yeah, he had the sack fly.
He had the hard hit ball that Burleson caught.
Yeah.
So it was a solid night for Canzone, but still like, he has regressed.
I don't know if he's necessarily falling off.
I wouldn't go that far, but he's definitely regressed.
Um,
I'd rather just have the defense with Victor out there right now while Canzon isn't providing much.
And I'm not saying like, oh, Victor needs to play every single game, even against Ritey's.
Yeah, like a healthy amount.
But yeah, I think you need to get back to prioritizing run prevention a little bit here.
And not just fully going like, what is my best offensive lineup that I can put out there?
Plus, you always have Dom off the bench.
Yeah.
So, you know, if you need a big, you know, home runner or something.
Has Dom Canzon ever hit a big home run off of the bench?
I don't know.
Yes, this is back when Ty thought that Dom Canzone was wasting a 40-man spot
and probably should retire from professional baseball, I believe is what he said.
All right.
Yeah.
Relax.
Yeah.
You need guys off the bench you can hit for power.
And there are going to be times where you have to say, you know, screw defense.
I need offense right now.
And that's when you run with guys like Canzone out there.
But right now, I do think the victor.
And the speed and the pressure and the defense that you get from Leo Rivas and Victor being in the lineup at the bottom of your lineup, I think is really valuable right now.
And because Cole Young's not really hitting, because Dom-Kan zone is regressed back to the mean a little bit.
And because you just kind of refuse to use Luke Rayleigh unless you need a bunt to be put down.
Like, yeah, you probably should just stick with the energy guys at the bottom.
who can put the ball in play and run like heck and give you a really good defense.
So again, the Mariners magic number is now down to 14 with the win last night.
We'll tell you how that can go down even further tonight and tell you about some other things to keep an eye out for on the out of town scoreboard in just a moment.
But first a reminder, this episode of the Locktime Marys podcast is brought to you by Nutraful.
You've probably seen a million ads for hair growth products and thought, yeah, sure, like that actually works.
and I don't blame you because there are so many products out there,
and it is so hard to know which ones are actually going to do anything.
That's why you should give Nutraful a closer look.

So the Mariner's magic number now is down to 14 for them to click.
a spot in the playoffs.
The Rangers do not play tonight.
They begin a three-game series against the Mets
who are also fighting for their playoff lives right now,
starting tomorrow in Queens.
So the magic number can only go down to 13 with a marriage win tonight.
But there are some other things to watch out for on the out-of-town scoreboard.
The Astros, by the time that you're watching this,
are going to be wrapping up their series with the Blue Jays.
in Toronto.
Obviously, if they lose that game, that would then provide the MERS with an opportunity
tonight to tie them at the top of the AOS standings with a win.
Also, kind of quietly, over the last few days, with the MERS five-game win streak,
they've picked up quite a bit of ground on the Yankees and Red Sox.
They're two and a half back of those teams now for the second and first wild card spots.
and the tigers are looking for a sweep of the Yankees.
So the Mayors can potentially get within a game and a half of the Yankees.
Also, if the Mariners win tonight, that would put the Rangers two back of them,
which would essentially be three back because of the tiebreaker.
So it would also be pretty nice to accomplish tonight.
And if not, if they lose tonight, then that goes to one game back,
which is essentially two games back.
So pretty much a game different.
depending on what the Maras do tonight.
So pretty significant swing.
Lastly,
Royals and Guardians are wrapping up their series tonight.
It doesn't really matter who wins that game.
I would root for the Guardians just because, again,
the Guardians you know you have the tiebreaker over.
And the Royals are four back now.
And they can potentially be five back if you win tonight and they lose.
So.
Plus the Royals are,
they won their game in the series already.
so you know cleveland's only going to pick up two games total uh ahead of them so yeah i mean if you win
tonight there's not a bad result there uh if you lose tonight you know then you're probably
rooting for still probably cleveland honestly um so yeah it's a bit of a kind of a you know
not really if you win there's no bad night on the out of town scoreboard and that's just pretty much
universally true. If you lose tonight, you know, you're rooting for Toronto, obviously,
and I think you're still no matter what, rooting for Cleveland, just because, again, you have that
tiebreaker. Like, that's secured. And if you can push Kansas City closer to 500 before you go down
there, you might encounter them where, you know, they might be six games back in that series
really not all that important in terms of, you know, them chasing you. Still would be important for Texas
and Houston and all that.
But yeah, so, you know, it's, you'd like to say, well, they're playing the Angels.
They have a good chance to win this series.
But we know better.
We know better.
So we'll see what happens.
Obviously Soriano's big, big stuff.
So the effort from the offense last night doesn't fill me with a lot of hope in this
pitchy matchup.
And it's Miller and Castillo starting game one and two.
The Angels are always pesky and annoying.
especially against you.
So we'll see.
I mean,
the bullpen is not 100%.
It should be okay,
but it's not 100%.
You can't really count on Bryce to go six
innings with any regularity.
I mean, you kind of can't count on Castillo to go six right now.
So,
you know,
last night's win might have come with a cost.
We'll see,
hopefully not.
Hopefully the Mariners can get their sixth victory in a row
and gain even more ground on the teams chasing them.
But yeah,
this is not a roll over series for the angels.
We know the Angels play the Mariners extremely well.
In Seattle,
we'll have to bring it.
They'll have to play much better than they did yesterday
if they want to win this series.
You know,
splitting the series,
not bad,
depending on what happens on that out-of-town scoreboard.
But yeah, just keep winning games.
Keep on lowering that magic number yourself.
And then hopefully you can get to a point
where you go into that Houston series
and you feel really good about where you're at
wild card-wise.
and you can focus on just trying to take that division.
But who knows?
I mean, we're still a week away from the start of that series, a week and a day.
So just got to focus on tonight.
Soriano, again, big, big stuff.
Well, at least some stuff in the middle of the plate, though.
So we better take advantage.
Can't miss cookies like he did last night against McGruevy.
Yeah, absolutely.
