How many runs does it take to win at Yankee Stadium?
Today, the answer was one.
The Mariners got it, and oh, man, did they need it.
Let's talk about it.
Colby, hit it.
You are Locked-on Mariners.

Oh, Hoy, Sailors, it is August 13th, 2026.
I am Colby Patnode.

Boy, the Mariners desperately needed to in their six-game losing streak, and they had the
right guy on the mound to do it.
The Mariners battled their way through a 1-0 win at Yankee Stadium.
I believe this is just the eighth time in the history of new Yankee Stadium that an
opposing team has won a game.
Once nothing, the Mariners have now done it twice, the last guy to do it for Seattle.
of course, Felix Hernandez.
It was a rough, rough week here in between wins for the Mariners.
And yesterday felt like the cherry on top of a, well, a not very good Sunday.
As the Mariners blew two separate three-run leads,
despite having one of their best offensive games in a week, and they lost 10 to 5.
But the Mariners bounced back today.
They salvage a game.
They end their six-game losing streak.
pick up a half game on Houston.
We'll touch on that a little bit later.
But really, the star of tonight's game was Logan Gilbert.
Logan tonight six innings, four hits, no runs, one walk, seven strikeouts, 95 pitches,
just three hard hit balls.
He was dominant in this game.
It was a little bit of a throwback, Logan, where the splitter was actually the primary,
secondary pitch for the last couple months now. Logan's been very fastball slider heavy,
and then the split has been the obvious third offering here. Today, not so much. He threw 95 pitches,
28 of them were splitters. He also mixed in a good number of changeups in this one, 15 changeups.
Now, sometimes the change up and the splitter kind of get confused on stat cast, so we don't know
100% what those numbers are, but it was very four seams and off speed heavy. Breaking ball
did not get much use today.
I mean, he threw it 21% of the time, 20 times.
So it definitely got used.
But today was a big fastball and then split change type of day.
And the splitter was very good.
He had a 58% whiff rate on the splitter to go along with a 30% whiff rate on the slider
and a 33% whiff rate on the change up there.
Just a 19% whiff rate on the fastball.
The Velo was very good.
He was at 99 very early on.
in this one. Through a fair amount of first pitch strikes, 14 out of 22, not too shabby.
But he really attacked guys a fastball slider in the first time through the order.
And then the second time, it was much more splitter heavy.
In fact, the second and third time through the order, he used the split 34% of the time and
43% of the time.
The fastball usage in those endings dipped down to 28 and then 22.
So came out early, established the fastball in the slider, and then by the time the lineup
rolled around, he was back to.
splitter heavy. Just really did a nice job of keeping these Yankee sitters off balance in this one.
14 called strikes all in all, 15 whiffs. So a 31% called strike plus whiff. Again, just three hard
hit balls allowed in this one. Average exit velo on the day, 83.7. Despite the two of those
hard hit balls came on the four seam fastball. And despite that, the average exit velo against his
foreseamer was just 82.3 miles an hour. Not much.
loud contact, not a ton of contact overall.
Logan was just dicing guys up.
The only reason he wasn't able to go seven is that he had a couple of outbats where it was
extended.
So Logan, great, great outing for him today, exactly what the doctor ordered.
You know, he needs to be the stopper.
So he was today.
And that's exactly what the Mariners needed in this one.
Just purefils, this is the guy you want to pay $150, $200 million to.
This is what it looks like.
And Logan has struggled against the Yankees in his career.
So this was a big test for him.
And he came out and he just looked awesome.
That's the guy you want starting game one of a playoff series.
That's the guy you want to build your rotation around.
That's the guy you're comfortable forking over $25 to $30 million a year for.
And Logan has shown that for a good chunk of this year.
Kind of got off to a little bit of a slow start.
And then his last handful of starts have been okay.
but, you know, other than that, he's been very, very good.
And definitely looks more like 2024, Logan, than 2025, Logan.
And he has for most of this year.
The bullpen, yeah, it wasn't bad.
It wasn't.
Bizarro came in, got two outs very quickly.
He's been struggling as of late.
Then he proceeded to walk two hitters.
There was an E6 mixed in there where Johnny Parada threw an absolute seed.
to throw out Cabiero, but for whatever reason, Colt Emerson didn't hang on to the ball.
And so he was safe.
He then walked McMahon before eventually striking out of Madrasario to end that threat.
So things got a little dicey there for Bizarro, but overall he gets the job done.
Jose Ferrer comes in.
He goes to clean and he does give up a couple hard hit balls.
But he looked really good.
Velo was crisp and just some really, really.
nasty stuff from him.
So, yeah, I mean, the bullpen, those two guys, the setup guys who have had a hard time,
they were good enough today.
Were they great?
No, I wouldn't say they were great.
But they were certainly good enough today to hand the ball off to Munoz, who was just absolutely filthy.
One inning, no hits, no runs, no walks, two strikeouts, no hard hit balls.
He made George Lombard look awful, and then he followed it up by making Chess Chisholm look awful as well.
Like Munoz is back.
He has been for quite a while now.
I hate that he's being kind of, you know, locked away for only ninth inning duties.
But obviously, you know, we've discussed that at length, and we don't think Dan is going to change his mind anytime soon.
But Moose was filthy today.
a 50% whiff rate.
He had a 67% call strike plus whiff on the four seamer.
Vlo averaged 100.6 today.
So he was averaging 101 on the fastball, just a filthy slider.
Not only through one change up.
And this one, it was just slider, slider, slider, fastball to get ahead,
slider, slider, it was just pure filth.
And this is what Munoz can do.
He can make you look terrible.
And that's exactly what he did in this one.
Through three sliders, two of them were just to get strike one to start the outbat.
Or sorry, two fast, three fast balls.
Two of them were just to get strike one to start the at bat.
The slider was the pitch that he gave up the contact on.
It was close to hard hit.
It was 94.7.
So you want to call it a hard hit ball.
That's fine.
But ultimately, Munoz is just absolute guilt today.
And that is exactly what you want to have happened.
And so it worked out very well.
Munoz and the pitching staff did a very nice job.
Huge shout out today to Johnny Parada, who got to start behind the dish.
He himself got three strikeouts overturned with his challenges.
He went, I believe, four for four today.
I think the one failed challenge was by a hitter, if I'm not mistaken.
But, yeah, three of those challenges turned, you know, what would have been a ball into strike three.
So it was just really impressive stuff from pitching staff.
And it was a big part of that was Johnny Parado who worked very well.
This is only his, I believe, second start behind the dish since being recalled in early August.
And he just, he looked very good.
He also did check in with a base set.
You know, Johnny Parado, we kind of know who he is.
He's a quality backup catcher.
He should have had a caught stealing in this one.
But Johnny Parada, again, Munoz is, or sorry, Gilbert is the star of this game.
The unsung hero is absolutely Johnny Parada, although there were plenty of people singing the praises of Johnny Parada.
So offensively, again, rough day for the Mariners, but going up against Max Free,
they actually did a nice job of getting Freed out of this game relatively early.
He had to throw 88 pitches to get through five.
Unfortunately, they were just not able to get anything going against kind of the front end of the Yankees bullpen.
Freed went five innings.
The Mariners were able to get five hits, only the one run on a Weston Wilson home run,
two walks, but again, 88 pitches of five innings, pretty good, especially against Freed.
But Yarborough, De La Santos, and Cruz really just nailed it down.
Of the last, let's see here, of the last five, nine, 12, yeah, the last 12 outs, six of them were
strikeouts, and the Mariners only had two hard hit balls.
All in all, the Mariners in totality only had eight hard hit balls in this one, just a 20 or sorry, 40% hard hit rate, which is not bad.
Only five hits, though, only were able to draw three walks.
But they did score one run on a solo home run by Weston Wilson, who also had a stolen base combo meal for Weston Wilson.
Randy had a hit today, so did Julio, Canzon with an offer, but he did draw a walk, Cal with a,
a, you know, after a pretty nice game last night,
step back day for him, O for four with a couple of Ks,
Naylor was able to find a base hit had two hard hit balls.
Donovan had a hard hit ball in this one.
Wilson, the big home run.
Johnny Parada had a base hit.
Leo Rivas played most of this game.
He went 0 for two in this one.
So the Mariners played solid defense,
although they still made a mistake.
They pitched the heck out of this thing,
and they hit a home run.
and today that was enough to win.
And that is awesome.
They needed this win.
They got this win.
And now it's off to Houston where the Mariners will have an opportunity,
maybe their last opportunity, to salvage the season.
We're going to talk about that.
But first, today's episode is brought to you by Amazon and Vandul.
So the Mariners are heading off to Houston, no off day.
in between here, they are off to face the Houston Astros, their nemesis, their rival.
And this very likely is the Mariners' last chance to get back into things in terms of the playoffs.
They are eight games under 500.
There are, I believe, 35 games left to go, if I'm not mistaken.
So, yeah, they're in big trouble.
They are five games back of Houston.
They do have the tiebreaker locked up against Houston.
So it's more like four and a half.
But this is their opportunity.
If the Mariners can sweep the Astros, which is not, you know, not an easy thing to do,
particularly the way they're playing.
But they've played Houston very, very well.
They're going to be dialed in.
They're going to have some momentum rolling into the season.
If they can, or into the series, if they can sweep the Astros,
the Mariners would be two games back of Houston at that point with the tiebreaker and their
back pocket. And at that point, regardless of where you are record-wise, you would be five games
under 500 still. If you're two games back of a division title in mid-August, you're very much a contender.
So the Mariners do have an opportunity here to kind of save their season, or at least salvage it.
Now, the tricky part here is that you really do have to sweep Houston. Winning this series
doesn't do that much. You gain one game, your four-back.
you really are in a position, unfortunately, because of how you played,
where you have to sweep Houston to make any kind of dent in this thing,
unless you're going to somehow win a series against Milwaukee and the Cubs and the Phillies.
Like, they're right in the middle of this, this brutal stretch, as we all know.
So the Mariners are going to not have, obviously, Logan available for this series.
It kind of sucks, but what are you going to do?
It's just the way it worked out tomorrow.
the Mariners will send George Kirby to the mound against Pete Lambert.
On Saturday, it will be Hancock versus Hayden West Nesky.
And then on Sunday, the game on NBC will be a really good matchup,
Brian Wu versus Hunter Brown in those games.
So these will all be, I should say, the Friday game is at 5'10.
The next two are at 4 o'clock.
So late start time on Sunday.
But it's a critical series for the Mariners.
If they get swept, the season is over, there is no conversation to be had.
If they lose two out of three, it's almost certainly over.
If they win two out of three, they've kind of extended life support a little bit here.
If they sweep the Houston Astros, they are very much in contention for that American League West.
And that's what it's going to come down to.
So playoff baseball, more or less this weekend for the Mariners.
I would hope that reinforcements are coming.
We have no update on J.P. Crawford, but Michael O'Royo is hitting.
And you need anybody who can hit right now.
Brock Rodden is performing and Leo Rivas is not.
You need somebody who can hit right now.
You need some help.
Cade Anderson, I know they don't want to put him in the bullpen,
but it might be time to pull him up and have him ready to,
go in the rotation or in a piggyback scenario for this week. And you have to pull all the
strings. Like, this is it. This is your season on the line right here. You need to win all three
of these games. And you need to manage it like you're going to win all three of these games.
So, yeah, it's funny how one win can kind of change things. But if you win these next three,
you are very, very much in the race. Again, a series win would be nice. It's certainly something.
but this is going to be your second to last opportunity to ensure that you are gaining ground with every win.
You're going to play Houston two times in late September.
But this is it.
You have five games left against these guys.
You're five games back.
You can do the math.
Of course, you don't have to beat, you know, you don't have to beat them five times out of five to make up the five games you're behind.
But this is huge.
This is huge.
The Mariners desperately need this series.
and we don't know how the bullpen's going to act.
It's been pretty hit or miss recently.
It was solid today, especially in Munoz,
but we don't know how that's going to go.
Spire was terrible last night.
Bizarro is still kind of fighting through this.
We might get Carlos Bargis back,
but it sounds like they want to give him at least one more rehab assignment.
So I don't think we're going to see him.
It's do or die.
It really is.
Three Ritey's on the mound.
Canzone should be in the lineup every day.
Donovan should be in the lineup every day.
Hopefully, Cole Young will be in the line up.
up every day. He got taken out of yesterday's game. He was able to play today for a couple of
innings at the end. So it seems like he's fine, but you really need him. And then it's going to
come down to your pitching. You know, you probably have the pitching advantage on paper in the first
two games. But then it's Brian Wu on the road against Hunter Brown, who's very, very good. And Lambert
is having a really nice year. Don't get me wrong. And West Neski can certainly give the Mariners problems,
but this is your season. I cannot stress that enough. It sounds repetitive. I know.
but it's go time.
Like your season is on the line here.
And you have to do everything you can to win Friday's game.
And then, you know, you have to do everything you can to win Saturday's game.
You have to take it one game at a time.
You cannot worry about tomorrow until you get to it.
It's all hands on deck.
Everything, whatever you have to do.
You have to win the series.
At the very least, you have to win the series.
But if we're being honest, you have to sweep the Houston Astros.
And right now, the way you're putting.
plane, it sure feels like you're much more likely to get swept than it is that you actually pull
off a sweep. So, you know, we'll see, we'll see where it's going. And we'll see how this weekend
looks, but it is absolutely critical. This is your, this is your alamo, right? This is your last stand.
Now, I understand you got slaughtered at the alamo, depending on what side you're on. Obviously,
Texans got slaughtered at the alamo, so maybe not the best. Hey, you know what, Houston, you know, the people
there, Texans. So I, whatever. This is an analogy I'm not going to finish and it's falling apart
on me very, very quickly. But yeah, the Mariners, backs up against the wall, last chance to kind of salvage
their season, maybe get on a little bit of a run. You do hope that playing Houston kind of dials
everybody back in. It certainly has in the past. Houston is like the one team you've seen this year that
you've actually played really good ball against. I believe you've only lost one game against them
so far. Are you seven and one? I think you're seven and one.
against Houston.
So it sucks, but this is the position you're in.
You need to make that 10 and 1 to get back into this thing.
Because gaining just one game net is just really not going to get it done.
We'll see.
They'll certainly need more offense than they got today.
But Houston, pretty good hitting environment.
Again, obviously the guys are going to be dialed to play their division rival.
And they know that if they win these three games, they are right back in the mix.
So season not quite over yet, although I don't blame anybody for thinking it is.
I kind of still do.
I'm not buying into the Mariners all of a sudden turning this around after one win.
But yeah, man, maybe this win is the attitude adjuster that we need.
But it's really going to be decided by these next three.
If you get swept, your season's over.
If you sweep, you're very much in the race.
And anything can happen at that point.
And hopefully if you sweep, you do.
have a four-game win streak and you can kind of gain some momentum and you find a way to survive
the next nine against Milwaukee, Chicago, and Philly. And take your chances with the rest of your
schedule. But yeah, big win for the Mariners today. They absolutely needed a huge shout out to
Logan Gilbert and Munoz and Pareda and Weston Wilson. Go figure, right. Weston Wilson and Johnny
Pareta may have had the biggest impact on an absolutely critical win that you needed to have.
It's a shame they couldn't figure out how to keep black.
last night's lead, winning the series in New York, and then going to Houston, where you have a chance to win two or three or sweep, that would have been potentially conversation changing amount of vibes.
But we'll see, ultimately, the Mariners fate is still in their hands.
And they got to start by playing a good, good clean game on Friday and finding a way to win that game.
That's going to do it here for me on this solo show.
