This is Mailbag Monday.
but before we answer your questions,
we have some news to talk about,
some big news, actually.
With Domkan Zone, heading to the IL
with a sprained AC joint,
mayors are calling up
outfield prospect Jonathan Clasey,
not Sam Haggerty,
who of course is still rehabbing down in Tacoma,
not Samad Taylor,
who is eligible because he would be replacing
an injured player,
and not Cade Marlowe.
It is Jonathan Clossey,
who is, of course,
one of the mayor's top prospects right now.
Now, Colby,
last night you tweeted from our locked on account that you didn't like this you've had the chance to sleep on it now though so do you still feel that way uh yeah not a huge fan of this of this you know idea uh well now it's not even an idea now it's just a plan uh not not a fan of it um i think what my biggest concern here is is that clausay hasn't doesn't have any track record of
success in the high minors. Last year he was painfully mediocre in AA. And this year,
you know, he surprisingly got promoted AAA to start the year. And he got off to a really good start
and the numbers look great right now. But he's also now struck out seven times in the last
three games, I think, four games perhaps. And that's been a big issue for Claise,
is that he does swing and miss, particularly last year. First crack at double A, he struck out
28% of the time. Like, that's a big number for a player who doesn't have 30 home run power,
probably isn't going to hit for a high average, and doesn't provide really any defensive value
of which to speak. It's certainly not, you know, up the middle, which is where you might live
with more strikeout. So I think when I look at Clause saying, I look at what he brings to the
table. It's a smaller dude, 5 foot 8, 5 foot 9, very, very fast. He's 70, some still say 80 grade speed,
You know, it's elite speed.
It's way up there.
Definitely can steal some bags.
There's no denying that.
He's a pretty good base runner.
He's got some pop.
He's a switch hitter.
He's got some pop from the left side.
He draws plenty of walks.
Like, he's never had an issue taking his base.
You know, he's,
but he swings and misses a lot,
particularly in the zone.
And he is known to chase a little bit.
So it's just one of those things where I look at this guy
and I go at 21 years old,
having about 10 games,
10 really good games above the A ball level.
and he's just being thrust into the majors as kind of the first option, really.
This is the first serious injury replacement that the Mariners have had to make this year.
And they went with the guy who's proven the least out of all their options.
Obviously, Claucet hasn't had a chance to prove himself at the big league level like Marlowe and Haggerty have.
But Marlowe and Haggerty have both done nice things at the big league level, in particular,
Haggerty, who's been, you know, a valuable role player for Seattle for the last three years.
So, you know, again, Haggerty might not just be ready yet.
There might be a little bit.
And perhaps this is a very short-term thing where Clase gets called up or gets sent back down when
Haggertie's ready.
And Haggerty just kind of assumes this role because, quite frankly, I think what's
fair to expect from Clase in his however long of a run this is at the big leagues,
is pretty much Haggerty
and I feel like that's a ceiling right now
I don't think that there's a whole lot there
So but if that's the case right
Why would you call up Jonathan Clause say to serve as essentially a bridge to Sam
Haggerty in a few days?
Right
Because Justin Hollander got on the radio a couple days ago and he says that
Haggadi is probably a few more games away from being major league ready
Why not just call up Samad Taylor who again is eligible to be called up because he would be
replacing an injured player even though that his 10 days haven't haven't run out yet since he was sent back down or
or Cade Marlowe or literally just anyone other than Jonathan Clossey because at that point
like he's finally building some momentum down on the miners down on the high miners why impede
that just for a few days worth of him being on the roster well I think part of it could be that he's
the guy swinging the bat the best right now Marlowe's starting to figure things out he's starting
get back in the swing of things but he's running like a 40% strikeout rate so if you only need a guy who's
going to play for three or four days, you know, why take Marlowe out while he's just now starting
to, you know, figure things out in Tacoma? Why take him out of his rhythm? Why take Taylor out of his
rhythm when both of those guys not exactly crushing it in a AAA right now? Just go with the guy who's
actually, you know, found something that's working. And then because you only need him up for a few
days, you just kind of roll with that. And then you just make the swap when you're ready. And it's
worth keeping in mind that, you know, Classe's already on the 40 man, just as Taylor and Marlowe,
so you don't have to make any additional moves there. So there's no advantage roster-wise,
roster construction-wise, and picking one of those players over Closset. So if it's a short-term
thing, I think it could just be, you're just riding the hot hand and you're hoping to catch a little
lightning in the bottle. If it's not, I would prefer that you go with a guy who's actually
shown some stuff at even the big league level. Like, as you guys know, we talked about
This lot in the spring.
I'm a big Marlowe guy.
And Marlowe has shown quite a bit, not only a lot more than Closier in the high miners,
but also a pretty decent amount in the big leagues that, hey, this guy can help a little bit at the very least.
So I would have preferred Marlowe.
I think that would have been the smartest way to go.
The Mariners clearly disagree.
And we'll see who ends up being right.
But, you know, I don't have super high expectations for Clossay, just because I don't think he's ready to
to really battle big league pitching and that's my concern.
I agree, but I also don't think this is a short-term thing.
I don't think that they call him up if this is a short-term thing,
if he's just serving as a bridge until Harry is ready to go.
I don't think that's the case.
But yeah, I have my reservations here.
And I think with the way that this offense has played,
the fact that this team is six and ten right now,
they are not living up to expectations here in the early going.
And obviously this team has talked a lot about, you know,
leading up to the season about wanting to get off to a better start than they have in previous
years and they haven't done that so far and i feel like this is kind of a desperation attempt
at least from the outside looking in this is just kind of how it reads to manufacture a spark
and i get it right because like good jonathan clausay if they're right what jonathan clausay's
ceiling at least right now is a 21 year old he gives you a speed and base running element that you don't
have a ton of right now on this roster.
He gives you another switch hitting element that you could use more of and makes you more
dynamic and how you can play matchups, et cetera, on a night-to-night basis.
And he's someone that could potentially produce in a lot of different ways.
And he's a guy that, you know, if he gets on board with just a single or a walk,
he can easily turn that into a double because of his speed.
He can be a weapon.
So I'm excited by it.
I don't like it.
But I am excited about it.
I would be lying to you if I said I wasn't, right?
And this is, you know, one of the more noteworthy prospects in the Marys Farm
system right now.
So that's always an exciting thing when a guy like that does get called up.
But yeah, I just don't know if he's ready to face major league pitching right now.
Because again, he has, he was a 94 WRC plus and 108 games last year in AA.
That's not good, especially with the strikeout rate that he's running.
And he's only been good for like, what, 12 games so far in Tripoli?
AAA, 15 games in AAA, I don't know how many it's been.
And especially because he is building that momentum,
do you really want to interrupt that now that he's finally starting to produce a little bit
in AAA?
Like if you're wrong about this, I just, I don't know.
So we'll see if it works.
I assume he's going to play a lot.
I assume he's going to be in the lineup tonight against Frankie Montes and the Reds.
I assume he's probably going to be hitting nine.
We'll see if there's any other lineup change.
changes. We'll actually be getting into that in a little bit here with the mailbag questions,
but I just, I don't know if he's the best option to help this team right now.
Doesn't mean that he's not the best option long term.
Doesn't mean that I don't think that, you know, of the group of Marlowe, Taylor,
Haggertie and Claude, and Clauss say that I, I think long term he's worse than those guys.
It's just right now, can he help you the most out of those four guys?
I just, I don't think so. I don't think so.
But hopefully I'm wrong.
Because again, if they're right,
This could be a difference maker.
It's not the thing that will fix the offense, right?
The thing that's going to fix this offense right now is Julio, JP, Cal, et cetera, carrying their weight.
But this might be the next best thing if he's able to actually produce because, again, he can produce in a lot of different ways.
Colby, do you have any closing thoughts on Clause A before we move on?
Kid Marlow's better.
I think Marlowe gives you a better chance right now.
I do.
But again, hopefully we're wrong.
Oh, yeah.
It'd be great if he was, you know, cabby.
Right.
You know, we know how valuable the spark that Cabrero did give this offense was last year.
And they did start to produce a little bit more when they added him over, you know, Colton Wong.
Now, you're not replacing a struggling player with Class A.
You're replacing a injured player with Claese.
And unfortunately, one of the guys, a few guys who was actually starting to hit is who you're replacing.
So, yeah, I think this is all just about tempering expectations.
And again, like if you guys want my opinion on what you should hope to get from Sam Haggard or from Jonathan Klossade this year at 21 years old in his first taste of the big leagues, I think if you get anything close to what Sam Haggertie has given you over the last three years, you should be very, very happy with that and consider that a success.
Right. The one thing, too, real quick, you know, he strikes out a lot, but he also has walked a lot down on the minors. I think he's run around a 13% career walk rate down on the,
So if he can counter out the strikeouts that way and can still get on base quite a bit, then, you know, again, because of his speed and what he can do on the base pass, then that's a pretty valuable player.
And something in it, and he gives a tool set to the Mariners that the bearers don't really have right now for the most part.
The risk with Class A is that he's Billy Hamilton, minus the centerfield defense.
minus the defense yeah the defense is an adventure as we saw during spring training uh so you know he'll be playing
left field presumably maybe he'll play some right but i would assume he's probably going to play left
field uh he won't be playing center field so that's at least good but even in left field he had some
interesting moments we'll say down in spring training including a ball that almost hit him in the head
uh but uh i digress uh so again hopefully we're wrong i'm very excited you know congratulations
the Jonathan Glassee, of course, on getting the call to the major leagues.
That's awesome for him.
And again, hoping we're wrong and hoping for the best here
and hoping that he can provide this lineup with a much needed spark.
But just from the outside looking in,
it does seem a little desperate with the way that this team is playing right now
and seems pretty unlike how this front office has acted in the past
with some of its young players.
All right.
So we're going to get into your questions here in just a moment.

All right.
It is Mailbag Monday after all.
We are going to answer some of your questions.
And we're going to start here with Cowell's Bobbleface.
Josh Rojas leadoff hitter.
I'm good.
I don't know.
I'm kind of into it.
He's had really good plate appearances, which, look, relative to what else we've seen in
this lineup for the most part, any sort of positive result.
looks amazing.
But I don't know.
You look at the slide-up right now.
JP and Julio,
they're the two guys that are pretty much killing you the most right now
because they're your two stars.
They're not producing.
And they're guaranteed the most set bats on a nightly basis.
If they move them out of those spots,
Scott Service move them out of those spots
for the time being while they figure it out,
I wouldn't hate it.
And I wouldn't hate Josh Rojas sliding into that lead-off spot
for the time being, right? It's not going to be a permanent thing, assuming that JP hasn't fallen
off of cliff, which I don't think is the case. But until JP and Julio get it together,
I'm cool with it. Sure. I just, I don't think you're going to see a huge difference.
I think you're better off at this stage still, just assuming that the rebound is coming,
because we know that particularly Julio is much, much better than this. So, uh,
Yeah, I mean, like look, if they want to tinker with the lineup, I'm fine with it.
I don't care that much.
They want to leave it as is at the top, then I'm fine with it.
I understand what the rationale is behind that as well.
So, you know, Scott wants to make some changes.
And he already has made a few tweaks here and there throughout the year.
So I'm not saying it's not something you won't do.
But, you know, I think JP and Julio kind of more or less earned those spots over the last year or two.
And so again, now we know that they're definitely willing to move Julio.
They moved him from leadoff to two to three.
They had six for game.
Yeah.
Yeah, that's what I was going to say.
And he went like three for four or whatever.
And they moved him right back up to one.
And then he went over for four again.
And people were like, ah, he should hit six at forever because that's clearly where he's
comfortable.
That's not a thing.
But yeah.
So we'll see.
Scott's not afraid to tinker with his lineup.
I do think that sometimes though, you're just kind of rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
and as long as
Julio and JP
and Garver,
as long as those guys aren't hitting,
moving around the deck chairs
isn't going to avoid the iceberg.
Orbit Reverse wants to know.
It seems that they always get off
to a slow start here of late.
Talking about the Maris, of course.
Are you confident they're going to turn it around
like they have the last couple of years?
Not getting runners in from third
is extremely frustrating.
Yes, I'm confident they'll turn it around.
Well, because right now, it's not your role players that are killing you.
It's your stars.
It's JP.
It's Julio.
It's Cal.
It's Garver, etc.
The guys that are supposed to be the driving force of this offense, they're not producing at the moment.
Sure.
We also shouldn't overlook the disappointing starts of George Kirby and Louise Castillo.
More stars who aren't performing.
Though Castillo was pretty good yesterday.
23 whiffs.
The slider was excellent.
So it's like we've talked about with him.
It's not the stuff.
We've seen glimpses where it's like, okay, that looks like Luis Castillo.
It's just the command has completely disappeared specifically when he's gone into the stretch.
And it did it did again a little bit yesterday as well.
But he was able to rein that end for the most part and actually had a pretty good start.
He had his typical start where everything just kind of, his typical ending where everything just kind of falls apart.
but thankfully you know Dominic Canzon's own sacrifice his shoulder to you know not give up any more damage on that despite there being like three or four hard hit balls that in it and then pretty much cruised the rest of the way he made a mistake with I think it was the change up down and in right in the loop zone of Michael Bush and that ended up being the difference of the game bummer but castile was pretty good yesterday shouldn't have been if you could just hit with bases loaded yeah exactly like cast like basically the mariners have been about the last four starts the
Mariner starters have done more than enough to help you win the games.
Like they're starting to figure it out.
And that's a big part of the reason why I think they're going to turn it around.
I think the pitching is going to be better.
And I think the offense is going to be better simply because there's a lot of really good hitters in this lineup who aren't hitting really good.
And so it's just one of those things where it's like for me to think they're not going to turn it around.
Like I have to believe that Mitch Garber is a bad hitter.
I have to believe that Julio Rodriguez is a bad hitter.
I have to believe that J.P. Crawford is a bad hitter.
Yeah.
I don't.
I don't.
I don't either.
Yeah, I'm confident they'll turn it around.
The key here is, is just not to dig yourself too big of a hole.
And as things stand right now, interestingly enough,
I think we can all think of games that the Mariners should have won.
There's probably, what, three or four already this year,
where they probably should have won that game.
If they win two of those, they are in first place today at 8 and 8.
So you haven't dug yourself too big of a hole at all.
Yeah, yeah.
thankfully the um you know no one in the division is pulling away from you where you're going to have
to spend the next couple of months chasing basically yeah um but yeah this offense has to get it
together but the again the good thing is that you know it's it's a good and bad thing right
the bad news is your your stars are not performing the good news is it's your stars that are not
performing and you know therefore they should be able to turn it around here like the fact that
you i mean think about it if you were just getting
league average production out of
JP, Julio, Cal, etc.
right now with the way that your
role players are playing with the way that
Mitch Hanager is hitting with the way that
the third baseman are hitting, etc.
This team
would probably have 10 wins by now.
Yeah.
But
Tullio's been a sub 40 WRC plus.
JP's been right around that area as well.
Cal except for when he's
played against Toronto has been pretty bad.
Yeah, it's not
Let's make one thing perfectly clear here.
Those guys aren't, you know, disappointing.
They're flat out bad right now.
Oh, terrible.
Like Julio's by WRC Plus,
Julio's a bottom 10 header in Major League Baseball right now.
Right.
So again, it's not like, oh, yeah,
they've been, you know,
they've been struggling,
but it's like,
no, no, no, that underscores
how bad they've been for this team so far.
They have been awful.
They are the problem, full stop.
It's not Bram Brown.
It's not Jared DeHart.
It's not Scott's service.
It's not Jerry Depoto.
It's not Rojas or Urias or all the guys we thought that we were going to be able to blame if this thing went sideways.
It's not of their fault.
It's your stars.
They have to play better.
And they just start doing it pretty quick here.
This team desperately needs a series win.

Ham Swaggerty 69 wants to know what have you guys noticed about JP the first two weeks.
A lot of ground balls and some uncharacteristic chases from him.
Do you think it's approach, timing, or mechanical?
Yeah.
So a lot of ground balls actually underscores how many ground balls JP is sitting this year.
This year, JP has a 57% ground ball rate.
Now, you might think like, oh, well, JP, aside from last year, has always been a heavy ground ball guy.
Not like this.
Not even where close to this.
This would be a career high for him by.
11%.
So he's hitting a ton of ground balls.
The fly ball rate is fine.
He is only hitting 10% line drives.
Last year he's at 28%.
Typically, he's around 27%.
So he's not hitting line drives at all.
He's sitting everything on the ground.
And, you know, it's a launch angle problem.
Clearly, he's hitting everything in the ground.
He's not hitting it as hard as he was last year.
So there's clearly something mechanical that he needs to tweak
to get the ball airborne, a launch,
little bit more. J.P.'s never going to be a super high, you know, uh, exit Velo guy. Like,
that's not his game. He'll turn on a couple pitches. He'll hit a few home runs. Uh,
but for the most part, he's not a high exit B low guy, uh, even last year in his breakout year,
29th percentile on average ex of below, just not part of his game. The good news here for J.P.
Is that it may seem like he's chasing more. Uh, and statistically he is, uh, but last
year is 95th percentile in chase. This year he's 89th. So he's, he's, um, so he's, he's,
It's not like he's chasing badly.
It's not that he's swinging and missing a lot.
It's not that he's not taking his walks.
It's not that he's not or it's not that he's striking out.
Like all the stuff that makes JP a pretty good hitter with a high floor,
he's still doing.
It's just when he's making contact right now.
It's almost exclusively weekly hit ground balls to the second baseman.
That's a huge problem.
He's got to get the ball airborne a little bit more.
Line drives turn.
Do you think about even the home runs JP hits?
Not a lot of fly balls.
Line drives.
That's a JPS to get.
back to he's got to put some backspin on the ball but it's a launch angle problem right now which to me
says it's mechanical yeah well also we need to keep in mind here that he made even more changes
to his setup and his swing this off season he completely eliminated the battle was a risk and so i
i do wonder if this is just kind of uh taking a time you know it's a matter of taking time for
things to gel a bit more for him because the ground ball stuff was a problem for him even in spring
training. This isn't something that just suddenly
cropped up once the season started and
pitcher started actually game planning for him.
Just getting two on top of the ball right now.
It's got to elevate.
It's also worth noting that J.P. Crawford has been
for most of his career, a pretty streaky hitter.
All right. So,
that is going to do it for our show.
