Starting point is 00:00:59 The link as well as our social accounts is, in the description of this episode. This is Mailbag Monday. The show will re-answer your Mariners questions. And we're going to start things off here with Max. And by the way, folks, Colby is currently watching the Mariners Reds game. So we're going to try and keep them on track here. But my apologies.
Starting point is 00:01:18 Yeah, interesting question. My answer is I don't care. See, we're already off to a great start. So Max wants to know, do you see the Mariners ramping up Cole Young's action this year with the hopes of him breaking camp next year? people saying sign an everyday third baseman, but what if they just move Polanco to third base next year and have a combo of JP and Young up the middle?
Starting point is 00:01:39 Is this a realistic thought? Colby, what do you think? And then Cori Polanco needs to swing at that pitch. It's right down the middle. On a two-oh count, what are you looking for? So clearly he shouldn't be the third basement next year. Sure. I'm trying to figure out what you mean by ramp up Cole Young.
Starting point is 00:01:57 Like, what do you mean by that? because yeah that seems like accelerating him but i feel like the plan is already to have him be a legitimate contender to make the roster next spring sure i mean like he might start this year double a yeah so i think you know getting starting the year in ever it is more realistic and then he moves to double a pretty quick but he could start the year in double and if you're in double a you're already within a year of the big leagues in theory yeah right uh so yeah i i think you know the polon thing is interesting. He has a team option after this year. So he has to perform some for that to
Starting point is 00:02:36 still make sense. But assuming he does, which I don't really have any doubts that he will, yeah, then I think moving him to third and having Cole Young play second, even though he's a better shortstop than JP. Yeah, I think that is very realistic. And I think if I had to guess, that's the plan heading into, you know, that's at least what they foresee the plan being. Now, we don't know what the plan is. We don't know how things are going to change. Maybe Young really struggles in, you know, maybe Young really struggles in Double A and he gets pushed back a year.
Starting point is 00:03:09 Or maybe Polanco really struggles and they don't want to pick up the option. But I think if you ask some Aaron, like how do they want this to play out? I think they would really like Young to be so good that he probably gets a cup of coffee at the end of this year. And then is, you know, the deserving opening day second basement next year. I think that's probably how they would like this to play out. next question here from Aaron Hughes, who is a pitcher who has stood out positively and another who disappointed. So we're working off of what 21 innings of data right now. As we record.
Starting point is 00:03:41 As we record right now, because I believe the mares are in what the third, the fourth right now against the rest. Heading into the bottom of the fourth. Yeah. So outside of today, we really haven't seen anyone that I think is going to make the wrong. roster. I mean, Jackson Coar and Maricio Javara are the two guys that have an outside shot of making the team. But for the most part, the guys we've seen pretty inconsequential as far as roster discussion heading into opening day is concerned. So with that said, no one can really disappoint. Right. Jonathan Diaz yesterday showed a pretty solid slider.
Starting point is 00:04:27 maybe there's something there, but I don't really have many takeaways as far as the pitching goes right now. Yeah, it's tough to say anybody's disappointed also because like you said, like there's been maybe two major leaguers, like guys who have a shot at the opening day roster, um, who have pitched. And then most of the guys who have thrown have just been AAA. Like they're, we know they're going to Tacoma. And then at the last couple innings of the game, they've been going to guys who are probably going to Everett. So kind of tough to say anybody's disappointed when you don't have. expectations for them.
Starting point is 00:04:58 Diaz's slider looked pretty good. He could be a lefty reliever they call on later this year. I thought CoR and Javera looked good, which is, you know, good. Coar probably headed to Tacoma. Chevera doesn't have an option left. So he might have an inside shot to get that job. But we haven't seen anybody like Bargis yet. We haven't seen anybody.
Starting point is 00:05:19 We haven't seen Hancock yet. So like, we haven't seen any of the guys who we kind of expect to have a, you know, some kind of run with the Mariners this year. We haven't seen a lot of those guys pitch yet. So it's really tough to say any of them are disappointed. I would say that Diaz's slider looked really good yesterday. And he's almost certainly going to AAA. And I assume they'll keep him stretched out,
Starting point is 00:05:43 but he's a left-handed reliever at the end of the day. So it's kind of a tough question to answer at this stage. All right. We've got more of your questions coming up here in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Mariners podcast is brought to you by Fanduel. Starting point is 00:07:02 Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. Before we get back into your questions, a reminder that we are currently running a giveaway, and we only have a few more days left. Colby, status report on the giveaway? Sure. So we're about last check, 50-ish subscribers from the YouTube channel
Starting point is 00:07:24 away from our goal of 11,000. So a decent chance. we get there, the prize pack is getting larger and larger every time we get to 100, every time we get to 100 subs. So I think when last we left, we had added the Peralander Baroa card to the mix. So it's time to announce the next level, what is it being adding to the box, and then we're going from there. So added to the box this time around, I have this autograph. Kyle Seeger card.
Starting point is 00:08:01 Very nice. And coming with it will be, if we get to 11,000, will be this unopened Kyle Seeger Bobblehead. So a little Kyle Seeger prize pack here going into the box if we get to 11K. There's potentially a bigger prize coming if we get to 11.1.
Starting point is 00:08:22 So yeah, right now the box is Garver, you know, Baroa, Kelnick, Harry Ford, Lasmon. Conte's collection of cards, Kyle Seeger and the ball. Randy win. Randy win. Yep. But yes, there could be more if we get past 1100 or 11,000.
Starting point is 00:08:40 And we'll tell you guys what the next tier is if we get to 11,000. So yeah, to enter all you got to do is subscribe to this channel. Make sure you leave a comment on any of the videos between, you know, last Monday and this Friday. And you'll be entered to win this prize pack. So right now it's pretty good price back. about eight cards, I think, and five of them are auto. A couple of Mariner Legends, a couple of current players. So, and a couple of just really, frankly, beautiful cards.
Starting point is 00:09:10 So make sure you guys enter, subscribe, leave a comment, and check out the terms and conditions in the description down below. Yep. You guys have four days left, including today. All right. The Darren McCacken and Joyer wants to know with Brian Anderson now on the team and proven that Jerry and company love to circle back on on players what role does he have does he break camp with the team or when should we expect him to join or will he be like colin moran and an out and opt out in may slash june and i refuse to read the last part of that tweet it's a minor league signing it's you know it's a minor league signing of
Starting point is 00:09:48 a guy who doesn't have off the field issues so you can't really dislike it but there's just really i don't see any scenario where they're going to pay brian anderson two million dollars which is what they him if he makes the big league team. I don't see anywhere they're going to do that instead of just paying, you know, Sam Hagarty 800K or Samad Taylor the minimum. So, uh, and there's,
Starting point is 00:10:10 I don't think there's anything Anderson can do in camp that would make, you know, make the marriage and think, oh yeah, he's worth $2 million. So, uh, I don't see it.
Starting point is 00:10:18 I think this is just depth. Um, I'm not sure the opt outs are always kind of, you know, like Mike Ford had a June 1st opt out. Some guys have opt outs. Uh, at the end of the camp.
Starting point is 00:10:28 Um, and sometimes, times guys get an opportunity and they just ask for a release and the clubs almost always grant those releases. So yeah, I don't think Anderson's going to be in the org for long. But it is, you know, nice to add depth. And Anderson is certainly a guy who can do some things. He can play a couple of positions. He's got some some power, good power. A lot of home runs and doubles to right center field even. So like he's got some pop and we'll see, you know, maybe the marons can find a week and they could stash him in AAA for a couple
Starting point is 00:10:58 months and he comes up and he plays a big role but I just don't see any way he makes the big league roster out of spring training and I think he's you know even if there are a couple injuries he's behind he's behind Rojas he's behind you know Eureas he's behind
Starting point is 00:11:13 Moore Haggerty Taylor so he might fit better in the outfield so maybe if Hanager goes down but even then he's probably behind Marlow and yeah he can stand out there but he has not been particularly good in a corner, negative 10 outs above average in his career.
Starting point is 00:11:32 He has been slightly above average defensively at third base, but he's been a below average hitter the last three years. Yeah, he's just, he's just depth. I would say, I think the perfect way to describe Brian Anderson is he is a competent big leaguer.
Starting point is 00:11:53 Like, I don't feel like if I have to, to go to him that it's an absolute disaster. Like he's not Ryan court or whatever. The merits have brought up in the past. Sure. Next question here from line down the left field line. Could you do a rapid fire rundown of the most likely next guy up for each position if our starter there gets injured?
Starting point is 00:12:16 But the versatility of your infielders right now, a lot of guys that can play second and third and some that can even play a little shortstop. Like it's pretty much the same cast of characters for all of these. So, yeah, so I would just, I would look at Taylor. I would look at Marlowe. I would look at Haggurdy. Those are the three guys that are going to get called up.
Starting point is 00:12:36 And then you just kind of mix a match with whatever else you have on the roster. Yeah, catcher is really the only one where it's a little different because I think that one, you just call up Hunt and then you kind of split time between Zavala and Hunt, depending on how Zavala looks. So, yeah, I think oddly enough, the answer is pretty. much to all these positions are Sam Haggherty or Cade Marlowe is who you'd call up. But I don't think either of them would become the starter. You know, if it would be Rojas or it would be Dylan Moore ahead of all those guys. So yeah, it's kind of like the same guy can cover for the same three guys can cover for all,
Starting point is 00:13:17 all eight positions, not counting catchers. So, well, poor pitcher. Next question here from Nate. If you had the power to grant guaranteed good health to two M's players for the 24th season, who would it be and why? I think the most obvious answer here is, well, one, Mitch Garber. And then I think after that it's, yeah, I think after that it's Mitch Hanager, right? I would also throw in Jorge Polanco into the mix here because second base has been such a disaster
Starting point is 00:13:44 area for the merrers and he's had his own injury woes on the past, but not as severe as Mitch Hanover, not as severe as Mitch Garber. Right. Part of this is is you're taking a big. bet on who's already going to stay healthy. Right. So like who can you least afford to get hurt? Julio,
Starting point is 00:13:59 but Julio's played in plenty of games the last two years. So that doesn't seem like a good answer here. I think it's the two Mitches because if they're both healthy, they're probably going to produce. And they lengthen your lineup incredibly. So, you know, you got 99 problem,
Starting point is 00:14:13 but Mitches ain't one of them. Like, that's a good problem to have. You've been sitting on that for a while. I have. I know. So I'm just trying to figure out when I could fit it in. And there we go.
Starting point is 00:14:23 There was. Good job. Good job. I'm proud of you. If the Mitches are healthy, Mitches be crazy. So I think, I think the two Mitches are. Don't use it all up. Don't use it all up. No, I'm firing from the hip now. Mitches, please, stay healthy. All right. We're moving on. Abort. Cacy wants to know, how many times does Mitch Garber catch this year? Hopefully zero. but I'm going to go with like 5 to 10 do I make another Mitch pun I hope it's less than like let's see there's 25ish weeks in a major league season I hope it's about 20 if that
Starting point is 00:15:09 like at most I hope it's about 20 ideally I think that number is zero so I think it only exceeds like 5 to 10 if cow gets hurt which knock on one because if Zavala doesn't work they're going to go to Blake Hunt and I think Blake Hunt will be competent at the very
Starting point is 00:15:29 least. Sure. I feel like he's going to be like at least an 85 WRC plus guy and give you good defense. So long as as Cal doesn't get hurt, I don't think the merits will ever get to a point where they should feel like they're forced into having to catch Garber.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Yes. Because I can, because even if Zavala's a black hole offensively and even if hunts a black hole offensively, I can live with that for a day. I mean, they're at least giving you good defense on that day. So yeah, I think the ideally it would be zero, but I think realistically, 15-ish, 10 to 15. But it does not like the Mariners really want him to just focus on being the DH. Like, don't even worry about it.
Starting point is 00:16:13 As they should. I haven't even heard that he's done drills with the catchers or anything like that. So I'm sure he has. But, yeah, it's not going to be a lot. at all when they were doing that blocking drill was he one of the catchers in that video uh he was helping harry ford i saw pictures of him like helping forward through the drill but i don't even think he was in catcher's gear for that so it's just kind of you know you just why why risk it uh you don't have to you actually have pretty decent depth at catcher right now um and yeah
Starting point is 00:16:46 you could get to a point where it just makes sense to risk it but um i don't think that point is anywhere close to happening as long as Cal Raleigh is breathing and able to play. All right, we got a couple more questions coming up here in just a moment, but first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown on Airs podcast is brought to you by eBay Motors.

Starting point is 00:17:59 And you're listening to the Lockdown, I'm Aaroners Podcast. Thank you again for making us your first listen here on Mailbag Monday. We got a couple more questions. This one comes from Matthew. Based on your prospect rankings, how big of a concern is it that the Ms don't have a pitcher in the top 12 of your rankings? And two, where would the prospects that the Ms traded over the winner rank? Gonzalez, Bowen, Barrowa, and DeLoch. So to answer the first part of the question,
Starting point is 00:18:26 I don't know if I would consider it a concern. I would just say that it's an indication of probably where they're going to look this upcoming draft. They're going to go pretty heavy on the pitching. Now, it's not a particularly good draft like we've talked about in the past, but I feel like we're going to see a lot of pitching in this upcoming draft. And it's actually some decent college pitching in this draft, but yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Yeah. And with the way that this organ is, well, that's another good point, right? College pitchers, more advanced, right? Closer to the big. So if you're kind of worried about that, about, you know, how like, all right, for example, the best arm in the mayor's farm right now to us is Jeter Martinez. He's like four, five, maybe even six years away, right? Yep.
Starting point is 00:19:13 You know, but with a college arm, we're probably talking two years. three years especially with the way that the mayor has developed pitching so I'm not too concerned about it I think they're going to get it figured out it's just yeah right now like it's a it's a very obvious weak point of their farm system but nothing that
Starting point is 00:19:33 I'm really losing any sleepover secondly all right where would Gonzales Boen Baroa and DeLoch have ranked in our in our prospect rankings Gonzalez probably like seven he was seven for me
Starting point is 00:19:48 I remember yeah yeah like seven or eight somewhere in there um generally corroborated prospect by the the national guys I'm still a good one but overrated broa I'm typically just not 15 I think is where I had him I'm typically just not super high on relievers in general
Starting point is 00:20:08 even if they're close like 15 to 20ish and then Bowen probably like like 17 to 20 ish? I think I'd bone at 22
Starting point is 00:20:22 I'm trying to remember where I had them before I removed them but I did a lot of polish at the end so Bowen might have moved up but he was around 20 like somewhere in that range
Starting point is 00:20:33 and then Deloche like fringe top 25 yeah I think I had him like 25 26 yeah next question here from O line coach C looking forward to the trade deadline because I don't want Matt Chapman
Starting point is 00:20:44 if the third base plan isn't working, do you have any early ideas about who may be available and trade at third base? Matt Chapman after he signs a one-year deal with pick a team. Detroit. Yeah. No.
Starting point is 00:20:59 It's kind of a silly like question because like we can't possibly know. There are so many teams that are at least like in the discussion for one of those playoffs spots and we just don't know how the season's going to break. So we don't know who's going to be available. We know that there's a lot fewer sellers than there ever happen.
Starting point is 00:21:15 So it's not so much looking for pure sellers even. Maybe you're looking for a team to do just kind of a swap with. So like, you know, I think Patrick Wisdom is a guy who could make some sense. We'll see how that looks at Chicago. A lot of strikeouts there. But yeah, I like there's just like who's definitely going to be a seller? Oakland. Who's Oakland's third basement right now?
Starting point is 00:21:40 Zach Gelloff or is he playing second base? And I have no idea who they're thinking. third basement is. Exactly. So yeah, we'll have to wait and see. We don't know. Uh, like this time last year, nobody would have thought Jemir Candelario was going to be one of the hottest bats available at the deadline. So. Right.
Starting point is 00:21:58 Don't really know. It's not really a big deal right now. Um, but, uh, yeah, like wisdom, maybe, uh, J.D. Davis, like if you want to go rental route, somebody like that. So pretty much anybody you think might make sense now, probably going to make sense in July. Well, because that's just all the information that we have right now. Right. So, yeah, like guys like J.D. Davis. I mean, okay, absolute high end.
Starting point is 00:22:25 Let's say Emerson Hancock gets his stuff together this year. And you're either able to trade him or he's so good that you feel more comfortable trading Miller or Wu. And then you go after you suck parades. And now that's assuming that the rays are comfortable doing that. need pitching, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. But that's like absolute high end. Sure. I mean, like Jose Ramirez, like, I can't see it.
Starting point is 00:22:54 Yeah, yeah, I just can't see that. That doesn't feel like an in-season trade Cleveland would make either. Like, I think they'd probably rather just, you know, wait until the winner to do that. But, you know, for all we know, Brian Hayes or like Matt McLean or like just one of these young studs is actually available. and you just go and you pay the prospect for it to get that guy. Like we just don't know who's actually going to be available. But, you know, maybe it's somebody like that.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Or maybe it's, maybe it's no L. V. Marte for Brian Wu because Emerson Hancock got his stuff together, you know, or something like that. So there's just too many variables to really give you a good answer right now. All right. So that is going to do it for our show. Thank you so much for joining us here on the lockdown Marius podcast. This is going to be kind of a weird week for us in terms of recording.
