The Mariners are looking for a series win,
either tonight or tomorrow after beating the Reds 9 to 3 last night.
We're going to get into Jonathan Klossay's debut,
the new look slider from George Kirby,
and also get you ready for tonight's matchup between Hunter Green and Logan Gilbert.
but I actually want to start with this offense from last night.
It was the best game we have seen from this group here in the early going,
putting up nine runs on 10 hits and six walks.
Now, look, Frankie Montes was terrible last night.
He only goes two innings in this one,
didn't even record an out until it was already three nothing Mariners.
He walked five, gave up five, his command was terrible,
his fastball Vila was down.
You could add a bunch of qualifiers to this game.
But look, at the end of the day, the Mariners were presented with a prime opportunity to put up runs and they took full advantage of it.
And that's all you can ask for.
So what did you make of it last night, Colby?
Last night's offense is what I've been looking for the entire season.
We've pretty much been screaming at these guys.
You know, you got to get your head in the game.
You just can't stick to the status quo.
Something's got to change with the offense.
And last night we saw, we saw them take walks.
we saw them put the ball in play.
They didn't have a tremendous amount of hard hit balls last night.
What they did have is only seven strikeouts, six walks.
They had two home runs.
They had quite a few extra base hits, doubles, triples, things like that.
We also saw them, you know, just get a base hit with a guy on second base where I just
score, run the old-fashioned way.
They scored four runs.
They scored in four separate innings.
They got the early lead, and then they didn't just coast.
They tacked on.
They continue to put pressure on the Reds.
The Reds are a dangerous team.
Even when you have elite, they have a lot of speed.
They have a lot of power.
This is a team that you can't just sit back and say, oh, we got three.
We're good.
Like, that's not going to work.
You have to continue to add on.
And they did.
So, you know, first inning starts right away.
Like you said, very clear, Montes just didn't have it.
His velocity was actually down a couple of ticks from what it was in his previous start.
Now, it was a cold night.
And the velocity thing is something that, you know,
Mariners pitchers also experienced last night.
Not so much George Kirby, but everybody else.
So, you know, maybe just cold night, whatever, early in the season.
Velocity dips sometimes.
Okay.
But also the command was really poor and control for Montes and the Mariners took advantage of that.
Very early on, they get the back-back walks to start the game.
Jorge Polanco, who's really turning the corner here really since that first series against the Red Sox.
Since then, he's been really good.
Yeah, I think he's reached base 21 times in his last 13 games, something like that.
Right.
And then it's been especially good in like the last week or so.
He's been one of your best hitters.
Like Jorge Polanco has arrived.
Kind of the nice little bonus here is that you probably knock two relievers out of this entire series last night.
You knock Nick Martinez out of the series.
And you probably knock Buck Farmer out of the series.
The latter probably not great.
Sure.
armor a little bit more.
Sure.
Yeah, the reds are going to be two guys down in your bullpen for the rest of this series.
Your bullpen is fine.
It's in really good shape.
So, you know, it's a great first win.
It was easily their cleanest game just all the way around base running, defense,
pitching, and that's what it's supposed to look like.
Now it's not going to, right?
Everything kind of went right for them last night and everything, you know, they played really well.
There's no denying that.
They played really well.
and there are going to be days where they don't.
You know, there's going to be stretches where they don't.
We know that because we've seen it.
But overall, that is what it's supposed to look like when everything's clicking.
They are a very dangerous team.
And oh, by the way, we're still waiting for Julio and JP and Garland.
Right, right.
So it was a much needed win.
You know, you lost a really frustrating one on Sunday.
You kind of didn't want that to start to snowball a little bit.
So you just come out and he just more or less bludgeon a pretty good Reds roster to death.
And you do it with
on singles and doubles and triples and stolen bases and walks and home runs and
stellar defense and really,
you know,
good pitching and you just kind of suffocate.
The other team,
and this is what we talk about or is what Scott Service talked about all the time.
We want to be hard to play against.
The Mariners play like that.
They're going to be extremely difficult to beat.
Absolutely.
That's sequence to start the game.
The two walks from JP and Julio and then the Homer from Polanco,
that's kind of the proof of concept of what
this top three, top four in this order can be.
Sometimes it's going to be Julio that gets that home run.
Sometimes it's going to be Hanager that gets that home run.
But the point is that you have guys that can work counts, right?
Especially in Polanco and JP that are going to run that pitch count up.
They're going to frustrate pitchers.
And when you frustrate pitchers, more often than that, they're going to make a mistake or two.
I was so impressed with this offense last night.
It was a lot of fun to watch.
God, I love Mitch Hanigler.
I texted you this last night.
I love Mitch Hanager.
Like, I'm so glad that he's back.
So glad that he's back.
And he is good, right?
It was like one thing to be excited that he's back.
He's back in a marriage's uniform.
But now, like, he's actually contributing.
And he's one of the mayor's best headers here so far in the early going, which
low bar to clear.
Don't get me wrong.
But Mitch has been very, very good.
And then last night has a home run to the pen, has the RBI double as well.
It was great night for Mitch.
after they tried to clip his head.
Right, yeah.
With the fastball,
not too happy about that.
And then the double-dain one.
Yeah.
Yeah, I mean,
like,
we know that he's the head Mitch in charge.
He's the alpha Mitch.
So it's nice to see him get off to a good start.
He did,
you know,
he is getting a little pole heavy recently.
And so I was really happy to see that the home run last night was to left center field,
just trying to stay up the middle of the field.
Yeah.
But Mitch does on occasion try really hard to get to his pole side and,
and,
you know,
launch.
to his pull side.
And that's when you kind of start to see the slump.
I like it when Mitch is using the whole field.
He's staying up the middle.
It doesn't mean he can't turn on a ball like you did for the double.
It just means that, you know, you don't have to because Mitch, as we know, is one of the few right-handed hitters who has the power to hit home runs into the gaps of Team Mobile Park.
So how do we know that?
He's literally done it.
Like so, yeah, Mitch was very good last night.
You know, it's funny.
Julio looked awful at the plate last night.
Just awful.
He's in a bad spot right now.
still reach base twice,
score two runs,
stole base.
Still found a way to contribute.
Yeah.
So yeah,
it was great.
And then obviously,
the real story of the game,
Luke Rayley,
just shown off the big male wheels,
triple,
bunt single.
I saw the shift right away.
They did that pan out
where you can see where the defenders are playing.
And I was like,
wow,
they're just going to give him that entire side.
That's like,
that's the most,
extreme shift you can possibly get with the restrictions in place.
And he just like, okay, I'll just bond it right down there.
And it was beautiful.
No.
And it's just one of those things with Rayleigh's speed.
It doesn't even have to be that good of a bond.
You just have to get it past the pitcher.
And you're going to get an easy single.
And so, yeah, you know, I continue to really like Luke Rayleigh.
He can run.
He can hit for power.
He's just a good ball player overall.
And I hope he continues to get opportunities.
He should.
There's another riding on the mound tonight.
night. Yeah. So hopefully he's, you know, playing first base or right field or left field
or DH, like whatever. I think tonight would be a good night to give Ty France a blow.
Yeah. We've talked about this. We don't need to rehash it. There are plenty of ways to get
Rayleigh in the lineup. Yep. Without sacrificing, you know, just the last two days, you gave Julio
day off. You gave Garbury Day off and Rayleigh filled in both times. So you can continue to do
this and I hope he does. And I think he needed a game like last night.
Absolutely. Absolutely. So I have a couple other things that I want to go over with the offense.
And then we'll get into George Kirby's night. Saw new grip on the slider. We'll get into that and a little bit here.

So, Colby, let's talk a little bit about Jonathan Kloss's major league debut, gets his first
major league hit pokes a single right past ellie which he's outrunning that ball anyway they were
going to try to you know double him up and he with clausay's speed he would have made it as at first he would
have gotten the rbi i either way but his first major league hit is an rbii as well and we saw a cool
moment with with him and ellie after the inning ended as well so what did you think about clausay's
debut he did strike out he ran a couple of o2 counts what do you think overall yeah he's no
Cade Marlowe.
No, I think Kloss
they handled himself pretty well.
Didn't look overwhelmed at the plate.
You know,
did get into some counts and then,
you know, some bad counts and then he managed.
He managed the count.
Now, you know, fell off some tough kids.
You know, work some counts.
And, yeah, nothing,
nothing super special in terms of just
something we've never seen before.
But obviously, your first major league kid is special
no matter how it comes.
And the fun thing about Claese is that if Ellie doesn't catch that ball,
that's probably a double.
And he only hit it, you know,
135 feet.
And it would have been a double.
So yeah,
you know,
haven't gotten to see Clause's best tool yet,
which is his speed,
you know,
I was hoping to see him swipe a bag or,
you know,
turn a single into a double like that type of stuff.
And he will if he gets enough playing time and if he,
you know,
produces enough.
But yeah,
I thought he looked pretty good.
Didn't look overwhelmed.
nothing too terribly difficult in left field.
So we didn't get to see or we didn't see any kind of potential issues he does have.
And he does have issues defensively.
But yeah, I mean, there was no tough play he had to make.
There was no like, oh my gosh, that's a debut to remember forever for us.
Now, for Class A, everything is something to remember.
So, yeah, I thought he was, I thought he handled himself very well, you know, for a 21-year-old,
he's barely played above A ball.
So, or has barely played above AA.
So I thought he handled himself well.
Didn't look overmatched.
Was a little disappointing to seem to swing through 92, like belt high for a strike three,
but whatever stuff happens.
So yeah, I think Klossi handled himself pretty well.
Nothing that, you know, I saw that drastically altered my opinion on their decision there.
But I thought he handled himself well.
He certainly didn't look overwhelmed.
Yeah, we'll see.
You know, it seems like they're going to keep on playing him.
And it seems like, I mean, we talked about this yesterday.
I don't think he's a bridge to getting Sam Haggurdy on the roster or anything like that.
I think he's going to be on this roster for the foreseeable future until, you know,
he gives him, he gives the mayor as a reason not to have him on the roster.
We did hear yesterday, too, that Canzone's injury may not be as severe as initially feared.
So there's a possibility that Canzone is back, you know, before May is over.
so we'll see we don't have an exact diagnosis yet but we did hear that it is not right
it was relatively good news and that would seem to imply that there was no clavicle fracture and also
that it's not the you know the serious grade three I think is the serious one that would be six to eight
weeks so it might only be a couple weeks it might be a month uh it still be six to eight but
he'll still have to he'll still have to go on a rehab stand and get his timing right and all that
Probably at least a month, but it might be closer to a month than two months,
which is what we kind of initially, two and a half months,
which is kind of what we initially assumed.
But Scott yesterday said that, you know, Clause is up here to play, right?
They're not going to just, he's not just a bench player, right?
He's not just a guy to fill out.
Yeah, he's not just a guy that's going to fill out the open roster spot.
Not until October anyways.
Sure, sure.
But, yeah, so I think we're going to see him play quite a bit.
I would be fairly surprised if he wasn't in the lineup tonight and maybe even tomorrow, you know, get him a chance to face a lucky tomorrow.
Yeah.
So.
I don't want him in the lineup at the expense of Rayleigh that often.
Sure.
But yeah, no, you know, I definitely, it's the guy I want to watch when he's up there because I really like the profile of guys who just create chaos with their speed.
And that's certainly that something class they can do.
Well, in the base hit last night, right?
not doing too much just kind of poke the ball through and found a hole right yeah he puts the ball in
play he's got a chance to get on base yeah we also know that he can draw walks so uh yeah like
i said i think clausay handled himself pretty pretty well for a 21 year old all right so let's
talk about george kirby it was a uh nice little bounce back performance from george a couple of
mistakes here and there uh but the the really interesting thing that we saw last night was uh the
slider. The slider looked a little bit different because he had a different grip on the pitch
using Logan Gilbert's grip. He used it during his most recent bullpen and carried it over into last
night's game and it worked out pretty well for him. So tell us a little bit about that. Yeah,
you know, George, he talked about it in his post-game presser. He mentioned the bullpen and how Logan
and kind of gave him this advice,
and he described the pitch as having more vert,
which I love it when pitchers talk nerdy.
But, yeah, it was a pretty effective pitch last night.
Kind of interesting in that he didn't get any whiffs on that pitch.
He threw 14 of them, but he got 10 strikes,
five called strikes on that slider.
And you kind of think back, the called strikes,
they were dotted on the lower outside corner to a variety,
pretty much all of them.
And four foul balls, only one of them put in play at a measly 84 miles an hour.
So the slider, while it wasn't a swinging miss pitch last night, it was extremely effective.
He threw 10 strikes with 14 sliders.
Only one of them had the potential to do any damage, and it was very softly hit.
So, yeah, the slider really complimented really well.
Kirby last night was very fastball heavy.
He was aggressive with both the four seamer and the two seamer.
And he actually got really good results on the four seamer.
as well. He had, what was it? Yeah, eight whiffs on 28 swings with the four seamer.
That's not bad. Five called strikes. Eleven foul balls. So they're still, you know,
fouling off the foursseamer. That's something we know George Kirby's just always going to be a guy who
he's going to give up some foul balls because he's always going to be around the zone. So even with two
strikes, hiters know that they can foul, they're going to get a strike at some point to hit. So that's just
kind of something he's got to work with. We've talked about this. Kirby doesn't have overwhelming
mean stuff. It is pretty good stuff with elite command and control. And so he's got to be on
the corners. And he's got to find a way to have these really great games. He's got to find a way to
make you chase somehow. And, you know, so far this year hasn't had a lot of success at that.
But last night was very good. It did seem at times last night that he expanded his zone a little
bit. Did you notice that as well? Sure. There were a few times where he was purposely missing,
well, not purpose. Like he was missing by pretty good chunk. And he ran a couple three ball counts
last night, including a stretch where he had three or four guys in a row where he got to 3-1.
Dangerous game with George, because again, the stuff isn't good enough to live down to 0-3-1.
He's got to be in the strike zone, and he's got to be careful with it.
So, yeah, I did notice that he nibbled a bit more, and he kind of pushed the boundaries.
And he had an umpire last night who was willing to give some pitches an extra, you know,
inch or two off the plate.
And so George was definitely trying to find that.
And it was very clear early on that he was testing limits.
And he was trying to find like where can I steal strikes here and all that.
So yeah, an interest.
He threw 20 some odd pitches in the first and he still got through six throwing only 89 pitches.
So, you know, I thought it was very solid George Kirby.
It wasn't elite George Kirby.
It wasn't dominant George Kirby.
But this is good George Kirby against a pretty good lineup.
And in a game where they were almost certainly using those bouncy Super Bowl.
balls, the juice balls last night. I mean, come on. Yeah. Come on. Yeah, you and I both had the same
thought. We were, uh, we were texting with one another last night. It was like, like the,
the, um, the ball that Cal hit to the opposite field that just continued to carry and carry.
I was like, okay. Yeah. I mean, even Hannager's home run, like to left center field to the
pen in April on a cold night. Yeah. That's probably a double. Freilies. Fraley's,
Homer got out in a hurry.
Polanco's Homer got out in a hurry.
Whatever.
I mean, both teams had the same advantage or disadvantage, whatever you want to call it.
So, yeah, I thought that curvy was pretty good.
And the slider is interesting.
We'll have to see he's, you know, going to have to get some whiffs on it at some point.
But last night was interesting.
It was 66% fastball.
And then the breaking pitches, it was, you know, it was 16% slider, 10% knuckle curve, only 8% split.
So pretty interesting night for George,
a little bit of a basketball heavy approach against a lineup that,
again, as we talked about,
it has a lot of power,
a lot of speed,
a lot of fun players in it.
So he had to be pretty fun.
If you're going to go fastball heavy,
you better be on the corners than he was.
And he was,
you know,
just off the corner.
And it didn't get a ton of chases,
but he was very effective.
And I think my favorite pitch of the night is the splitter he threw to,
I believe Benson to strike him out.
And his second at bat,
just absolute fill.
you know had it 95 96 on the low at the knees all night and then he just drops the split on him
yeah George Kirby definitely needed and by the way that completes a full turn through the
rotation where every single starting pitcher was more than good enough to win the game for his ball club
and that is much needed after the previous you know a trip through the the rotation which was
pretty much the exact opposite so yeah offense is a story last night but George Kirby getting
back on track, that would be significant.
And Logan Gilbert, looking to carry that torch tonight, we'll talk about him and Hunter
Green in just a moment.

And so the Mariners, of course, looking for their first series win of the season.
Either tonight or tomorrow would be great if they could just do it tonight.
But they're going to be facing off against a pretty good pitcher.
Former second overall draft pick Hunter Green, 486 ERA 394 FIP, 11.88Ks per 9, 3.24 walks per 9 over 16 and 2 thirds.
Endings pitched.
So tell us about Hunter Green, Colby.
He throws very hard.
It's pretty much a two-pitch pitcher.
It's a fastball and a slider.
The fastball fits in the upper 90s.
I believe he's topped out at 105 in his career.
So he's going to throw a ton of fastballs.
He's going to throw a ton of sliders.
My suggestion would be go up and look for the fastball.
And if he can throw three sliders for a strike, then you lose that at bat.
But go up there ready to hit the heater.
You know, there's the guy who's kind of steadily gotten a little bit better with
his control and command every year.
And I think, you know, the Reds are certainly hoping for a true breakout this year.
And he might get it.
Like those numbers that you mentioned, they're certainly not bad.
The ERA is a little elevated, but the FIP and the Ks per 9 and the base on ball for nine,
those are all very projectable to, you know, a high-end starter in this league.
So you're going to see a ton of fastballs.
You better be ready to hit the fastball.
You better be ready to, you know, hit VLO.
And I think your best shot is to just kind of assume you're getting a fastball.
And if he can flip three sliders by you and strike you out that way, fine, whatever.
I highly doubt that the Mariners are going to have another night where they only strike out seven times.
My guess is that green is going to befuddle them a little bit, particularly the first time through,
simply because these guys haven't seen 100.
And he typically don't in April.
So, you know, we'll see what green comes out with.
Maybe he's down a couple ticks like Montes was yesterday,
and maybe he leaves some pitches in the middle of the plate.
But, again, because of the velocity, the sheer velocity of the pitches,
he is going to get away with some more mistakes than Montes did last night.
So you just be prepared for that,
and it's probably going to look ugly at times.
But Green is a guy who, you know, if you get him in the middle of the plate,
he's like any other pitcher in this league, he throws 105.
If it's in the middle of the plate, you can hit it 110.
you know,
120. So it's all about not chasing.
And I think it's about attacking the fastball tonight.
And, you know,
if he's got the great slider,
then I guess,
you know,
you just find a way to manage it.
But I would sit on the fastball all night
and try to attack that pitch.
Easier set than done.
Green's given up a couple of home runs already this season.
He's also hit four batters already this season.
So it might be a good day to get Mitch out of the lineup.
Yeah,
maybe.
And maybe talk grants.
But if this is a,
regressive night for the offense.
The guy that you want on the bump is certainly Logan Gilbert.
He's been the mayor's most consistent starting pitcher here in the early going.
So start number four for Logan.
What are you hoping to see?
Yeah, it's been a really interesting year for Logan.
Thus far, it has been much more of a kitchen sink arsenal for him,
throwing all of his pitches at roughly 15 to 30 percent rate on any given night.
And we know that he has a lot of pitches,
the foreseamer of the cutter, the knuckle curve, slider, split.
He's got five or six pitches.
You know, throw all of them.
Now, typically he's not going to throw a ton of knuckle curve.
So if you want to eliminate that pitch, fine, whatever.
But I think this is a really important night for him.
I think the cutter is going to be the pitch here.
You know, if you look at the left, he's a Benson, Freilly, De La Cruz.
I think that cutter is going to be.
Candelario.
Yep.
Get the ball in on their hands.
You know, saw them off a little bit.
get the ball moving off the barrel because this team has a lot of power.
They can hit the ball very hard.
They're very good at barreling up baseball.
So I think that's the pitch to watch tonight.
And then I think the split is going to come into focus.
And if he has those two pitches, I think he has the opportunity to dominate tonight.
But we'll have to wait and see.
You know, again, the kind of the beauty of Logan right now,
he's kind of hard to game plan against because his, how he wants to attack you is almost entirely dependent on
you know, you and what you do well. Like he's he's not the same guy where it's like, well,
he throws a fastball and then the split is his best pitch. So you're just going to go fastball
split or fastball, fastball spitter. Now he's going to pitch to what you don't do well. He is a true
you know, uh, student of the game's type of pitcher with really, really good stuff to back it up.
So I think the cutter will will be the determining pitch tonight. And I expect Logan to pitch pretty
well. Reminder tomorrow, we are going to be doing a postgame show after the game. So we'll see you
