time for yet another edition of our Mariners content creator spotlight. Let's get into it. I'm here with
Jay of the Jay's Trident podcast, which is amassed over 2,500 subscribers on YouTube and focuses on both
the M's and the Seahawks.
Jay, thanks for joining me. How's it going?
Good, Ty. Thanks for having me, man.
Really appreciate it and really truly appreciate you doing this with content creators
and kind of paying it forward is what I'd call it essentially.
So doing real good and thanks for having me, man.
Well, I got to say that you were kind of part,
at least part of the inspiration to start doing this because my wife,
shout out to my wife, found your videos.
so they got recommended to her.
And she was like, hey, there's a lot more people I'm noticing that are doing what you're doing, right?
They're talking about the Mariners.
They're talking about the Seahawks.
And that's how I became familiar with you.
And then you invited me on your show not too long after.
And I've really been paying attention to what you're doing.
And it's great stuff.
So I want to start here by asking you how your Mariners fandom began.
No, and that's awesome too.
that your wife connected you because my wife has kind of connected me with some of these things.
So that is really, I don't know why, but that's cooler than you find to get to.
I don't know why, but it just is.
As far as my Mariners fandom, it's very cliche.
But 1995 was living in Seattle, Washington at the time.
And was much bigger football and basketball fan as a kid, just more fast-paced sports.
So I was into it a little bit more.
And everybody was hyped around 1995.
and I was in school.
I was in like third or fourth grade during the game against the Angels,
the one game playoff.
And they got on the PA at my school because we were in class and they announced that
the Mariners had taken a one nothing lead on the Angels.
And everybody in the class started erupting and screaming.
And I didn't really get it.
I was like, oh, okay.
But I was like, wow, that's cool that the school talked about this.
Like we never talked about sports, you know, from the teachers and everything.
So I got home, the game was still going on.
my dad was watching it at home.
And that just got me hooked on baseball.
And ever since then,
I have watched probably almost every Mariners game.
Not as much when I was a kid.
I was more casual,
but that got me hooked.
It's the cliche answer,
but 95 just drew me in.
And then that playoff run was just amazing.
Right.
Do you have a favorite season?
Is it 95?
Is it 2022?
Probably 22, actually.
just because, you know, as a kid, it was just, it's kind of funny because, you know,
I didn't realize the Mariners hadn't ever made the playoffs until that point.
So in 95.
So for me, it was just kind of like the norm.
Oh, this is what happens.
Your baseball team goes to the American League championship series every year.
It's probably how younger Seahawk fans today are like, oh, the team didn't make the playoffs
every season.
What happened?
So, and then and truthfully, you know, up until 0.1, even 0, 0, 0, 2003, where they didn't,
didn't get in. They were really good. And that's unfortunately what I really actually dove more into
baseball. I was always a fan, but I really got into it around the early 2000s. I was in high school,
you know, Saber Metrics was becoming bigger. So I was getting into all that. And then the Mariners
just dive bomb for 20 years. So 22, I won't lie to you. I shed a tear that night when Cal hit that
home run. Even though we knew they were going to get in, their magic number was one. So
they were going to get in somehow. But just that elation of that night and that season. And,
you know, I have so many friends. I spent a lot of time growing up in the Bay Area. So they were
giants fans. They had seen three world series. And they were like, just wait. It's going to be
amazing when you get in. And it truly was. So that's, I think that's probably my favorite season is
2022. So I can't help but notice that sign Kenny Easley jersey behind you. Is there a story behind that?
or is that just something you bought?
Actually, my brother got it for me.
A really nice birthday gift.
He got for me a couple years ago.
And we're actually moving.
I used to have some other stuff back here as well, some penance and stuff,
but I'm in the middle of the move.
So we're taking stuff down.
And I have a lot of Seahawks stuff.
And he was like,
hey, is there any player that you like that you don't have something for all?
I was like, you know, Kenny Easley's always overlooked.
And the dude's a Hall of Famer.
So he hooked it up with that and just,
amazing. That's awesome. That's awesome. Well, I got to say my beard pales in comparison to yours. Like,
I'm feeling some beard insecurity right now. How long have you been working on that thing?
So I got to say, though, yours is much. I should have gotten a trim before coming on locked on me,
especially, you know, I was not to change the subject real quick, but I was bragging to some people,
not but talk. I was like, oh, I'm going on locked on with Ty. And I think I'm the first guest since
Jerry Depoto. So I'm telling people like Jerry Depoto and then me. So I should have been
You got some big shoes to feel. But this beard is actually over a year. I do normally get it
trimmed up, cleaned up mustache and on the sides. But this is about a year, year and a half.
Actually, I think it'll be two years in October of work. But I will say yours is much cleaner than mine
right now. So I'll give you that. So how did.
the podcast began and what inspired you to start making content?
Well, this is why I loved you mentioned your wife found my channel because it was my wife
that actually inspired me to make a YouTube channel because every night after every Seahawks
and Mariners game, she would get a 30 minute rant for me on the game, like literally breaking it
down. I'm sure you probably do the same thing. You know, we just. Oh, yeah. My wife heard a lot from me
the night they drafted Rashad Penny in the first round. Yeah. Exactly.
And God bless my wife.
Like she's a big sports fan.
But she's just kind of like, I'm talking here about like, God, you know, Matt Brash is just getting babbip to death.
And she's like, okay, I have no idea what that means.
So she's like, why don't you start a YouTube channel?
Like, you enjoy talking about it.
You know, just turn on the camera and do it.
I was always very nervous to do it because I'm like, no one's going to care what I have to say.
I have no insight or no inside.
like information on things eventually one day i'm like you know what it's going to be therapeutic for me
to do it because it's going to help me get over really get over losses that was really like
why i started it because i would just drive my driving my car to work i'd be like if they just did
this they would have won so i put on the camera actually i just used my cell phone at first did videos
and i was like you know what if i get 12 subscribers i don't care it's more for me just as almost like a diary
a journal of the Mariner's.
And then did my postgame recaps.
And last year, it really just started to catch on.
And people started subscribing and commenting and watching.
And it just kind of took off from there.
More for my conversation with Jay in just a moment.

I'm here with Jay of the Jay's Trident Podcast for our fifth episode of the Content
Spotlight series.
Jay, I want to know what is your process like running the podcast?
If I had a process, that would probably be better.
It's very relaxed.
I can relate, by the way.
Yeah, no, and that's what I love about like you and Colby.
It's very natural when you guys are talking.
And that was kind of what I wanted my channel to be.
I have two analogies for it.
We're sitting at the bar, having a beer, and we're just discussing it.
It's not trying to one up anybody.
I never try and come on my channel and be like,
I'm telling you this is how you need to do it.
and this is how it is.
And then it's kind of just a diary journal, honestly,
for lack of a better term.
And now when I do videos on like, you know,
players and offseason stuff,
I get to,
you know,
I look up numbers and jot things down.
But in the season with the post game recaps,
it's just very natural.
I just,
once the game is over,
I might take a couple notes just so I can remember like,
okay,
in the third inning,
they left the bases loaded.
I got to remember that for the video.
But for the most part,
it's just a very,
natural, you know, these are just my quick thoughts on it. And I think that is what my subscribers do
like about it. It's not scripted. It's just a very natural, hey, I'm just going to talk to you
about the game, give you my thoughts on it. And that's that. And that's even kind of my other videos.
Like I said, there's notes, but it's just kind of free flowing and very journal diaryish long form
videos. Yeah, I like that. Just a lot of rip, right? Because when Colby and I get in,
here on Stream Yard before we record.
We chat for a while.
We'll chat for 10, 20, even half an hour before we start recording.
But as soon as the mirrors get brought up, I'm like, shut up, save it for the podcast.
Like, I love that approach to it.
You know, the best game plan is no game plan, really, right?
And it's a great point that you made like, shut up, don't talk about it.
Because I'll do that.
I'll, there was a couple times I would do the video before the video, you know, in my head.
And then it doesn't come off as natural because I've,
already said it. You know, I've already gone through and it sounds more scripted. It's more fun when
it's just real and in there. And, you know, I don't if sometimes I start over if I stumble at first in
the first couple minutes, I'll re-record. But for the most part, if I make a mistake,
I just let it go and correct it and move on. Mistakes happen. It's baseball. The players make
mistakes. We make mistakes too. Right. Well, and if you kind of pre-plan, you know, a little too much,
like you're talking about where you kind of just like write the whole show in your head
and you're kind of like going along beat for beat and then it's like oh I missed that thing that
I should have done and then that just kind of like at least for me that like completely
throws me off track and then I just have to kind of start from square one again exactly
same way for me same so what are your goals for the podcast and for creating content in general
um you know I've really you know to continue to grow subs
and the community.
I love that, you know, people like you and Jake from you love to see it.
And Marine Layer, couch GM, all these people have kind of come together.
I think that has been the coolest thing for me.
And it blows me away that like people have invited me into that community.
I never thought like I would be a voice in the Mariners community.
Because I always kind of looked up to all you guys a little bit.
You know, to be honest, it was like, you know, Ties got his thing going on.
He knows what he's talking about.
and all these other content creators.
So to kind of be in that, at least considered in that group is just, you know,
incredible to me.
I don't know if I really have a lot of goals.
I try not to like set certain, you know,
because at the end of the day, this is just, it's for fun.
It's just to talk baseball.
I love baseball.
I love football.
Love basketball.
Hopefully we'll have the Sonics back soon.
We can talk about that as well.
But, you know, I think just for goals, just I want to have a,
I'm going to have a post game recap up for each game this year,
something I did last year,
minus a couple,
and just continue to grow this community and have a good time with it.
And my main goal would be doing a Game 7 World Series live stream
and be celebrating it with everybody.
I think that would be cool if all of us got together
and did like a live stream or something,
would be so much fun to just celebrate that.
So I don't have a ton of goals set necessarily for my channel,
but just grow in the community,
continue to grow my chance.
and just have people, you know, come in and hopefully enjoy the content is really what it is for me.
So who inspires you? And it doesn't just have to be within the community, right? Just in general.
My wife is probably my biggest supporter. Obviously, like, you know, I make a little bit of money off of it,
not, you know, with my YouTube channel, but nothing that would sustain a family or anything like that.
and just her continued support for me.
She never once is like, you know, we have three kids.
So if one of the kids is, you know, tired, sick, a little cranky,
she's never like, oh, can you not do your postgame recap tonight?
There's never anything like that.
She has supported me from the start.
Even when I had like 50 subscribers, her, you know, inspiring me to do this essentially.
So really, I mean, she is the number one.
You know, my dad got me into sports.
That would be the other one.
And then in terms of YouTube, you know, really like not to have,
not that you had me on, I want to brag,
but people like you and Colby with Lockdown Mariners were huge inspirations
in the Mariners community with your channels.
And then, you know, there's some other YouTubers that do other sports and other teams that
I just liked how they're calm demeanor.
And that's really what I try to have is a calm demeanor.
and that's what I appreciate.
I'm not,
if you're into the Skip Bayless types,
good for you,
you know,
enjoy it,
but that's just not my style.
You know,
I'm much more like,
let's look at the process.
Even if you think it's a terrible move,
like even if the Mariners traded Julio for a bag of peanuts tomorrow,
let's discuss why that happened.
Like,
let's try and look at both sides of it,
at least in sports.
You know what I mean?
So that,
but yeah,
in terms of inspirations,
um,
my wife is number one easily.
Is there anyone that you would,
would like to interview or be able to work with one day?
I mean, I would love to do something in sports with the Mariners or something.
Would love to have Jerry on my show or Aaron Gold.
Jerry and Aaron Goldsmith are like the two I would love to talk to.
Aaron just is, I love Aaron Goldsmith so much.
So someone like that would, yeah, he would be awesome to have on.
Truthfully, anybody, I mean, if, you know, anybody in the Mariners organization to interview would be
totally fine. I've always been kind of nervous shy of doing interviews with other people and other
players, you know, stumbling over something and not getting it right. But, you know, I haven't
really thought about that too much. But yeah, I mean, I would love to do something, you know,
get noticed and have something in the Mariners community in the organization would be amazing. But
it's also not something that's like a goal of mine either. I have a nine to five that I do. I'm happy with
it. So if I didn't get one more sub ever, I'd love to have more subs, but if I didn't,
I would still enjoy doing this. I still love talking baseball. That will never stop.

you're listening to the lockdown airs podcast thank you again for making us your first listen
i'm here with jay of the jay's triton podcast so jay let's talk some ball thoughts on spring
training so far i've been the offense has been amazing i mean outside of luke raley i think everybody
is hitting um we were looking at the numbers the other night i'm like i think everybody's
ops is over a thousand right now um a little concerned about the bullpen injuries um any pitch
Pitching injuries always make me nervous just because you're always one pitch away from being out for a season or something like that.
But really impressed with the offense.
And I know the ERA has been high, but I am just not worried about the starting staff at all.
They're all proven.
We know what they can do.
But yeah, I mean, you know, I don't care about the wins losses in spring.
But, you know, I've been impressed.
There's been some really good showings from the position players this spring.
So what are your expectations for?
24 with this ball club world series champs um i mean it's i i try to be the eternal optim i try to be
the eternal optimist here i do you know listen like my head do i think they're going to win the
world series i'd probably say no but i think every team you'd always take the field over one team
if you're a betting person but i do i think this team can do it i think this is easily one of the best
rotations in baseball we can argue but they're easily in the top five
If you get Bras and Santos healthy, there is no better with Brash Santos and Munoz back end bullpen to go along with this starting pitching staff.
And I think this offense, if you can get healthy Mitch Hanager, which so far looks healthy and a little bounce back from Thai France, this offense is, I think it's good.
I think one to nine, it is a good offense.
It's not perfect.
But I think it's going to be an offense that can be consistent, score runs and certainly score enough runs to help.
this pitching staff. They're in a tough division. I never want to come across like a homer.
It's not going to be easy to accomplish that goal. There's a lot of there's going to be a lot of
obstacles and needing to stay healthy is going to be a task. But I absolutely believe the Mariners
can win the World Series. Now, a little more realistically, I would say AL West. I think that is
realistic that they can win the AL West. So I would say that would probably be the starting point for me.
I love it. I love the optimism. It's honestly very refreshing considering. Thank you. I appreciate.
The journal vibe this offseason.
Right.
The fandom.
Oh my gosh.
All right.
So beyond World Series champs, beyond ALS champs, any predictions?
I really think Brian Wu is a guy I have as kind of a breakout player for 2024.
Love the arsenal.
Just a matter of staying healthy for Wu.
I think he's got enough pitches.
He strikes guys out, doesn't walk guys.
Got to figure out how to get lefties out a little more consistently.
but when I look at the profile, I think it'll always be a little bugaboo for him,
but I don't see anything that makes me think he can't get lefties out.
So I really like Brian Wu as a breakout guy if he can stay healthy.
Another prediction is I think the third baseball tune is probably going to be okay.
I know a lot of people are talking like, oh, how are we going to move on from that third
baseball tune?
I, you know, it's sure, I'd rather have, you know, someone more established maybe there.
but I think Urius and Rojas can actually hold it down.
I don't think it's going to be that bad as some people are thinking.
And then I think Mitch Garver really is going to be an underrated signing as well for this team.
And if he can stay healthy.
And I think the team has a good process in place to,
they've got some injury prone guys, Garver, Polanco, Hanager.
But I think they actually have enough depth to keep those guys healthy.
Garver, D-Hing, not catching, should keep.
him healthy. Mitch Hanager, you can platoon them a little bit. You can dh him some days.
Should help keep him healthy. So I actually think there is good depth here. And that's something
I've kind of heard people really criticize about the Mariners, but I actually think their depth is
pretty good. Even with the rotation, you've got Emerson Hancock, who's looked solid so far in
spring, touching 97 is your sixth starter. I was joking on another show this week. I'm Tommy
Malone's probably on retainer somewhere for the Mariners. So you've always got him available.
No, but all jokes aside, I think Woo is probably my big breakout player for 2024.
So, all right, let's eliminate the Julio's of the world.
Let's eliminate the JPs of the world for now.
Who's your guy in 2024?
Is it Brian Wu or is there someone else that you can only pick one guy that you can consider your guy this year?
Who would that be?
Oh, boy.
Taking out Julio, taking out JP.
I think George Kirby would probably be the guy that I think is just can win a Cy Young.
I mean, the guy walks nobody, strikes out guys.
I think he's ready to be an ace of a staff and carry this rotation,
or at least be the best pitcher of this rotation.
He doesn't need to carry the rotation.
And then Cal, I think not only from.
just his play on the field.
But I love Cal Raleigh's leadership.
I love the way he works with the pitchers.
I think he is going to be an integral part.
I mean, obviously he's going to be an integral part of the season.
But I would say those are probably the two guys that I think.
And those are pretty obvious answers as well.
And I think the bullpen is going to be really, really dominant.
Once Santos and Brash hopefully get back in there, I don't see a better back end of the
bullpen in baseball with those three arms.
I mean, you're starting pitching.
We know these stars can all get through six innings.
I mean, and then you're turning it over.
You know, you're another team.
You're the Rangers and they're going, oh, we finally got Luis Castillo out of the game after six
innings.
Now we get, oh, good, Matt Brash, Gregory Santos and Andres Munoz, this should be fun.
Yeah.
And then my other kind of, I guess not my guys, but I think some of the other guys in the
bullpen aren't as bad as maybe some people, I don't know people make him out to be bad,
but like Trent Thornton was pretty good last year.
A little bit of a home run problem,
but the strikeout to walk ratio is really good.
Hopefully Carlos Vargas gets the kind of control command figured out.
I think he can be a weapon.
Spire was outstanding.
Saucito was solid.
So I think some of those guys going to be your unsung heroes a little bit.
Well, Jay, I want to thank you for taking the time.
Where can we find your stuff?
Yeah, so I'm on Twitter at Jay Talk Hawk.
I'm not on Twitter a ton.
It gets very negative on Twitter and I like to keep it upbeat and positive.
So I try not to give too many hot takes on Twitter.
But you can find me on YouTube, Jay's Trident Podcast.
Usually got at least one or two videos up a week.
And then I will have live streams throughout the season as well.
I do some contests giveaways during those.
So if anybody like to hit that subscribe button, join us.
We have a lot of fun.
It is very laid back.
Grab a beer, grab a soda, whatever.
you drink we'll just hang out watch the mariners and have a great time and hopefully be enjoying
