Locked On Mariners - Daily Podcast On the Seattle Mariners - Mariners Find Some Magic to Overcome 6-1 Hole, Stun Rays

Episode Date: July 3, 2023

Fresh off their worst week of the season, the Mariners were staring down the barrel of a potential season-killing series loss early on Sunday. But the 6-1 hole the Rays put Seattle in quickly vanished..., with the latter rattling off a four-run bottom of the third to bring things within one before Tom Murphy and José Caballero drove in the game-tying and winning runs later on in the afternoon. Colby and Ty discuss whether or not they trust this to be the much-needed turning point in the Mariners' season, how Luis Castillo managed to overcome a rough first three innings, Tom Murphy staying red-hot at the plate, and more.Be sure to follow or subscribe to Locked On Mariners wherever you prefer your podcasts! Mariners get a convincing win yesterday, and they complete one of their few come from behind victories today with a seven to six win over the best team in baseball, which, again, not surprising.
Starting point is 00:01:42 We talked about this on Friday's show that, of course, the Mariners would either sweep or win a series against the best team in baseball after losing 203 to one of the worst teams in baseball, because, because that's Mariner's baseball, baby. It's Colby. How are we feeling? And let's just get this out of the way. We've tried recording this episode a couple of times. And you know us. You know the deal.
Starting point is 00:02:08 You can fill in the blanks at home. But Colby, how are we feeling after this 7 to 6 win for the M's? A lot worse about it than I was 35 minutes ago when we tried to start recording this thing. Yeah. yeah yeah yeah still feeling this was a lock on
Starting point is 00:02:28 merit is special yeah yeah I think this is our fourth attempt maybe fifth attempt yeah one of them I couldn't even say the date
Starting point is 00:02:37 I couldn't say the date right the last or the first time that we did this yeah yeah it's been a whole we had a lag issue and then our room just completely collapsed 22 minutes in
Starting point is 00:02:46 so yeah this is try number four awesome yeah so if you're seeing this right now that means we did it. Congrats. Yay. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:56 The Mariners did it, Colby, to tie everything together here. They were down six to one today after a rough start to this game for Luis Castillo. But then they quickly responded in the bottom of the third with a four-run bottom of the third for themselves. And then eventually Tom Murphy hits a game-tying solo home run to left field. and then the mariner's get the game winning run on a basis loaded hit by pitch for Jose Cabiero because that's what Jose Cabriero does. So yeah so again, that's not all he does. We talked about this on
Starting point is 00:03:35 Thursday show, Friday show, I forget, but we talked about the hypothetical of the Mariners winning the series or sweeping the series, whatever, and we asked the question, would we trust it if it happened? I said no, you said no. I assume, well, I know for a fact, because we've had this conversation already, but I'll ask you anyway, for the sake of our listener here who was not privy to those conversations, multiple conversations, that is, do you trust it?
Starting point is 00:04:04 Have your feelings changed at all now that you've actually seen this happen? Absolutely not. How could you? How could anybody? this is a team who just like four days ago literally decided they didn't need to try and win a game against the worst team or one of the worst teams in the National League. And then, you know, they have their cruising. They get up four nothing off of McClanahan and you're like, oh, snap, here we go. We're doing it, baby.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Bryce Miller's shoving. And then Miller has to leave the game with a blister issue and it just collapses. And you're like, well, yep, that's the mental fortitude we've seen from this team. Now, the last two games, they've shown, you know, what's the word? Desire, want to, talent, skill, discipline, whatever. Sure. Pick what, pick whatever you want. But they've shown it the last two games.
Starting point is 00:05:01 And that's great. Obviously, it's nice to see, particularly since, you know, I got to see yesterday live. Shout out to Hunter. But, yeah. Gunner. Gunner. Sorry, Gunner. I asked him that.
Starting point is 00:05:14 Anyways, different story. Gunner, thank you. I think you have to do this like three more series in a row, four more series in a row. Or, you know, you could just sweep the Astros. Then I'm back to being all in. But, you know, no, I don't think you can just go out and just, you know, oh, everything's solved now. Like, no, it's not. It's nice to see.
Starting point is 00:05:40 It certainly is nice to see. And I'm not trying to take anything away from these two wins. They were really good wins. But no, no, this team hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt that they've turned it around now, just because they've won two in a row. We've seen this before, you know, go out on this road trip, go five and two or something like that. And then we can talk. We can talk about, you know, have they turned the corner.
Starting point is 00:06:02 It's time to recognize the talent of this team, blah, blah, blah. But no, I'm not drastically doing a 180 based off of where I was 48 hours ago. I will not be gaslit by the Seattle Mariners again. I refuse. I refuse. Yeah, yeah. Go six and one on the upcoming road trip and then maybe. Is that the number?
Starting point is 00:06:25 Maybe. Maybe. Look, you know, you can't go 500, of course, on this road trip. You have to either finish above or below. And into the all-star break. Four and three would be nice. But I feel like this team, this team really needs five. and two, six and one.
Starting point is 00:06:47 If you can get five, it would be great. Sure. Yeah. If you got five, it would get you back to 500, which is not where you wanted to be. But also the rest of the American League
Starting point is 00:07:00 has really slowed down a bit. So it gives you a shot. Particularly if you do a lot of that damage against the Astros, you can pick up, you know, two, three, four, went well you can't pick up three you can pick up two to four wins depending on you know the configuration of that series in in one weekend but uh yeah uh no you're you're not i am not you know all of a sudden all in we're not we're not we're back like we're not doing any of that stuff
Starting point is 00:07:30 yeah we're so back we're so not i mean maybe we are but we're not going to know that until at least the all-star break and that's only if the mariners go like six and one or five and two or something like that. So we'll see. It's it's definitely a great start. And obviously these two wins are there are a lot of fun because we got to see so many elements of, you know, the last two Mariners teams, the gritty, you know, the gritty side, the come from behind ability, the one run wins, the dominant bullpen, the dominant starting pitching, like the timely hitting, the, the willingness to just take ball for and let the next guy be the hero. We saw all of that the last two days at various points and that's great.
Starting point is 00:08:12 But it's not a skill until you can repeat it over and over and over again. And this marriage team just hasn't repeated that over and over again. So I'm not saying they can't, but I'm just not saying that I'm going to proclaim they will after the last two days because I still don't trust it. They haven't, they haven't earned that yet. I'm not buying it. Now, that shouldn't take away anything from how great these wins were the last two days, especially today.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Because today was the antithesis of what we said this team is, was whatever, on Wednesday and Thursday's show. And it was really nice to see. You know, this team was able to,
Starting point is 00:08:53 especially, you know, you find yourself down six to one after, you know, a really nice, feel good win on Saturday. After,
Starting point is 00:09:02 you know, of course, the race score 15 unanswered on Friday. And then, you know, losing two of three to the nationals and going two and four on the last road trip it just felt like another nail in the coffin but they were able to you know when the the stadium felt dead essentially they were able to pick up their own energy right which is something that
Starting point is 00:09:24 they haven't been able to really do much and i tweeted on friday after the 15 to four loss like things weren't already weird they were going to get very weird in the clubhouse and to see that that I mean, we're not there. We're obviously not in the clubhouse. But to see that that hasn't really taken shape, at least on the field to just a cataclysmic point yet, was nice. It was nice to see it wasn't,
Starting point is 00:09:54 it was nice to see that they didn't just get their ass kick today. And they were able to mount, you know, a really fun coming from behind victory. That was awesome. And look, again, big nod to the to the bullpen after just, getting demolished on on Friday.
Starting point is 00:10:10 Paul Sewell, great last two days. Matt Brash with a solid inning today. Andres Munoz, you know, but, you know, the bullpen was really good the last two nights. And so, you know, and that's huge, right?
Starting point is 00:10:25 That's the formula for the Mariners. And get to see them get some offense, especially against a bad bullpen. Because, like, they were going up against a bad bullpen with Washing a series ago, and they weren't really able to take advantage of that. So to see them be able to do that this time around, pretty cool. All right. So we're going to talk more about Luis Castillo, Tom Murphy, and more in just a moment. But first, a reminder,
Starting point is 00:10:48 this episode of the Lockdown Marys Postgame show is brought to you by I Bada. Picking up burgers and hot dogs for a summer barbecue. You know you're already doing it. You can earn cash back on hundreds of online brands and really. retailers too when you start with iBata including lows macy's seora best buy and more right now iB is offering our listeners five dollars just for trying ibata by using the promo code m lb when you register and you're listening to the locked on merri's postgame show thank you again for making us your first listen after the mayor's seven to six come from behind victory over the tampa bay
Starting point is 00:11:59 raise the mariners are hitting the road like we mentioned in the first segment going to be facing San Francisco Giants of the Bay Area tomorrow night. You can catch all the action on the mayor's hometown broadcast of Sirius XM via the SXM app. Unfortunately, no Mitch Hanager playing in that series. He is done for the year. All right. So Luis Castile, weird start for him.
Starting point is 00:12:23 First three innings gives up six runs, five of them earned. And then the final three innings of his outing, he was Louis Castile. So what happened? What was the difference between the first half of the start and the second half of the start, Castillo? Yeah. You know, Castillo, a pretty interesting day. I don't think he was as bad as the final line might indicate. Give up a couple solo shots.
Starting point is 00:12:55 Neither were particularly bad pitches. You know, a Rosarin is just really good. And Paredes, you know, just happened at the ball in the exact right spot. so that it would clear the fence. You know, he was kind of lunging after a slider. You know, Rosarena hit a ball that most hitters would hook foul, and it just didn't. So, yeah, you know, it's a little bit of a little bit of a, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:20 I don't want to say no home run really has an asterisk, but they weren't awful pitches. They weren't middle, middle, right? They weren't mistakes necessarily. They were just, you know, pretty good pitches that just the hitters did a better job, And then in the third, you know, things kind of start off with the air. But so you're Luis Castile. You should be able to get the double play.
Starting point is 00:13:42 You should be able to get out of that inning unscathed. He just didn't. You know, he was down in the zone pretty much the entire, you know, first three innings. It was on the corners for the most part, not a ton in the middle of the plate on the hit set he gave up a couple. But a lot of them were just right on the corner, but they were down. And Tampa Bay was being really aggressive. They weren't letting him get to his secondary stuff.
Starting point is 00:14:02 they were hunting the fastball really early. We saw teams like St. Louis do this earlier in the year, Boston, where they were just, we're going to get a first pitch fastball. We're going to swing at it. And so they took advantage. You know, they had a really good game plan, good for them. The second three innings, Castillo really changed things up. He threw the slider more than he has in a long time.
Starting point is 00:14:25 Kind of ditched the two seamer. Not a lot of sinkers in this outing, mostly four seam slider and change up. So not a ton of two seamers. That seems to be a pitch that he decided to scrap today. And you saw the difference. And, you know, it's huge. We talk Castillo's over. I'm not going to say Cassio was good today.
Starting point is 00:14:44 19 whiffs is a pretty good number. You know, obviously six innings, six strikeouts against this team, no walks, one walk. But you look at those numbers, fine. But you gave up five earned still at the end of the day. That's too many for how good you are. But I don't think this was a case of Cassidy. being especially bad. I think this is a case of the race being good, having a good game plan,
Starting point is 00:15:08 and it taking a little bit longer than you would like for Castillo to adjust. But he did. And him coming out and throwing up that really quick zero after the Mariners answered the Ray's third with their own four-run inning, that was huge. And that kept the momentum on your side that gave you the belief that you could win this game. So don't underestimate how important those last three innings from Louis Castillo were. they were huge and they gave the Mariners the opportunity to not only get their, you know, claw their way back into this game, but also set up the bullpen to do exactly what it's set
Starting point is 00:15:39 up to do, which is to go, you know, Munoz, Brash, Seawald, in whatever order, the lineup dictates. So yeah, Castillo, it was big, you know, it was big day. It wasn't his best day. Nobody's saying that, but that, that's what, you know, a number one pitcher does when he doesn't have his best stuff, when he doesn't quite have, you know, when he needs his team to pick him up when they do, he does his part and keeps the game right where he needs to be and gives you a legitimate opportunity to win that game. So, you know, kudos to, you know, now three-time All-Star Luis Castillo and I'm finding a way to work his way through that lineup pretty dominantly after the first three innings. Yeah, no walks for Castillo. He did give up the two
Starting point is 00:16:18 homeruns, like you mentioned, obviously not super convincing the home runs, but that's now 10 over his last four starts. That is a pretty concerning trend there for Castillo. A lot of solo shots, fortunately. I mean, yeah, well, Verlander led baseball in home runs the year he won the Sion. So it's not necessarily an indicator, but it just means you're aggressive, right? You're aggressive with the fastball like Castillo is. You can give up home runs. The key there is the zero walks.
Starting point is 00:16:48 Yeah, that's the big number. Yeah. Not having guys on base that don't need to be there. But also, also, too. Try giving up a few less home runs. That's fine, too. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that would be, that would be good as well.
Starting point is 00:17:02 But like you mentioned, he was named the, an All-Star, the Mariners only All-Star in the upcoming All-Star game, yeah, for now. We'll see, I mean, obviously, Yordon Alvarez isn't going to play in the All-Star game as far as we know. He was named, so there's, they're going to need one outfield spot, filled out at least two now. Judge. Judge. Judge, like you mentioned. So there might be an opportunity there for. for Julio, of course, maybe George Kirby, Paul Seewald.
Starting point is 00:17:34 I'd be pretty surprised. Yeah, I'd be pretty surprised if Kirby didn't make the team as a replacement for somebody because he's been really good this year. And Paul Seawald absolutely, absolutely deserves to be an all-star. So, you know, we'll see what they drop there. And then I don't think they do a last, like the last get-in vote thing. They haven't done that since the secure a year, I don't think. The Mariners broke. Sure, when the Mariners fans, when they flex their voting power. We got to scrap it. This is unfair. When the Blue Jays in the country of Canada does it every single year, like, oh, well, that's just baseball. There's nothing we can do about that. Bite me. Major League Baseball, bite me.
Starting point is 00:18:12 You're listening to the Lockdown Marries. Postgame show, thank you again for making us. Your first listen after the Mariners, 7 to 6 come from behind victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Again, you can catch the Mariners and the Giants starting tomorrow on the Marriss hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via the SXM app. Tom Murphy has been sensational the last three games and just this homestand in general and just as of late really Murphy's been really really good at the plate he finishes this homestan over his last three games six for his last nine nice by the way obviously had the game tying home run earlier this afternoon he's had a couple walks over that stretch he's just been really really good his slash line is now up to and keep in mind 98 played a
Starting point is 00:18:56 appearances, not a whole lot, but his slash line is up to 281, 337, 551. That's a 146 WRC plus. Tom Murphy, I mean, statistically, again, he's not qualified because of the limited plate appearances, but offensively speaking, and really defensively, too, Tom Murphy is one of the best catchers of Major League Baseball right now. And so that creates an interesting conversation that I'm sure we'll have, you know, later on on a on a future episode of locked on depending on what the the mariner's do from here on out that uh murphy might be your most valuable trade ship because of how you know few and far between
Starting point is 00:19:34 guys like tom murphy become available at the trade deadline guy that can catch and plays good defense and can hit on top of that that can net you something nice even though that he's a rental but in general we should just be talking about tom murphy more because he's one of your nine best hitters right now. He should be playing as close to every day as possible. And so, I mean, isn't all that possible. Which isn't all that possible. Well, I mean, that, I guess that brings up the question of,
Starting point is 00:20:07 do you call up like Brian O'Keefe to have a third catcher on the roster just so you can play Murphy more? I don't think it's about that. I really don't. I think it's more about, you know, just a, Tom Murphy's health. You know, he's not been the healthiest guy. throughout his entire career. And so you don't want to put too much unnecessary stress on the body,
Starting point is 00:20:29 particularly since he's gotten plenty of stress as just a catcher in general. He already plays a really stressful position. And the other thing, too, is that Mike Ford's been really good too. And honestly, you can make a pretty compelling argument that Mike Ford is better against D.Rides than Tom Murphy is. You feel better about that. And you just can't play Ford anywhere about D.H. Your first base, you can't play Murphy anywhere but catcher or D.H.
Starting point is 00:20:50 You can't play Cal anywhere but catcher or DH. So you just kind of really don't have the versatility to move those guys around all that much. So really what it comes down to is, is you know, do you just bench Mike Ford? Is Tom Murphy the full-time DH now? I mean, no, because Ford's been good. I think Ford's up to about a 120 WRC plus. You probably don't want to do that. And you feel better about forward hitting righties than you do Murphy, at least on a consistent basis.
Starting point is 00:21:16 So, yeah, it's pretty easy when there's a lefty on the mound to just go, okay, well, yeah, will just use Tom Murphy, either a catcher or DH, when the lefties on the mound. And I think you could give Murphy some DH starts against right-handed pitching. I really don't think it is the whole, like, we don't want to sacrifice the catcher, you know, a spot if Cal gets hurt, now we have to bring in that.
Starting point is 00:21:37 I don't think it's about that because that last one game. And then you just bring up Brian O'Keefe the next day. So I don't think it's about that. I think it's just about like we don't have the versatility with Ford, Raleigh and Murphy in the last. lineup to get them all in there with the kind of regularity we want to. So to me, if you want Tom to play more, you're saying you want Cal to sit more, which, I mean, we could have that conversation, but you're not going to bench Cal Raleigh, essentially,
Starting point is 00:22:05 you know, especially right now when you're kind of a fringe playoff team. So yeah, yeah, it's kind of a tough spot to be in with Murph in his playtime because there are other factors. But I think you should probably try and find a way to, you know, even if there's not a lot of lefties on the schedule. I think you should probably try and find a way to get him three, four starts a week. Maybe, you know, two catcher and one DH or two DH, something like that. But yeah, it's not as easy as just, you know, he's the DH, everyday DH now.
Starting point is 00:22:36 Did you see what he did after the game? You mean where he emptied out the Gatorade buckets so nobody could give him the, yeah. Just because Tom's always the one given the Gatorade baths, he knows. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he knows. And he knows how all that works. So I'm sure he knew well ahead of time that he was probably going to get the post game interview as they won. So, you know, Galaxy Brain move there from all stop and Tom. You know what wasn't a Galaxy Brain move, by the way?
Starting point is 00:23:05 What? Bringing in Colin Pochet to face Tom Murphy. You brought in a lefty to face the lefty crusher Tom Murphy. Kevin Cash is manager of the year over Scott Ser. is get out of here with that nonsense time for policy wall to pitch you brought in a lefty to face tom murphy yeah a lefty not even a good one he's brought in a run of the mill lefty and you're like oh yeah no he'll get tom murphy out hmm guess not l guess not it's a real kevin move of you kevin cash more like kevin broke my right uh huh ha ha ha my right
Starting point is 00:23:52 See, I thought you were going to make a chili joke, but okay, that works too. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Kevin Cash dropped that win, like Kevin Malone dropped that chili. That was worse than mine. That was working. Let's just move on. I don't know if it is. I don't know if it is.
Starting point is 00:24:06 Let's move on. All right. During our other recording that got lost, you talked about the possibility of actually extending Tom Murphy, instead of entertaining the idea of trading him, even if you're just kind of where you are. right now. Do you want to talk about that just quickly just to get it out there?
Starting point is 00:24:27 Because obviously that that recording has been deleted and gone. Sure. And we're already tempting faith by pushing this one. Yeah. So if the team is out of it and they truly are sellers, then yeah, you could trade Tom Murphy, you probably get something pretty decent for it. So it's definitely worth exploring. But if you're like fringy, like, I mean, or if you're like in a good position after a few weeks,
Starting point is 00:24:50 I don't think it makes any sense to trade them, not only because you need to protect yourself from a Cal Raleigh injury, but also, you know, beyond this year, you don't have a guy. Like, Harry Ford is not him next year. Like, that's not the guy who's going to be your backup catcher. Brian O'Keefe, we know what they think of Brian O'Keefe. They don't think Brian O'Keefe is a major leagueer.
Starting point is 00:25:11 That's very clear. So they don't have that guy, and those guys are really expensive to go out and get. You know, you can't just, I mean, Murphy right now as a free agent if the season ended today, he would probably, even on the back of what, what would you say 98 played appearances, he'd probably get six, seven million bucks. Like that is what a backup catcher goes for. And they think you can start and a lot of teams are going to think Tom Murphy can start.
Starting point is 00:25:35 They might give them 10 million bucks a year. So to me, I want to go out there and I want, I want, I want Cal Rale to be my starter, but I want a good backup. I just don't want, you know, Brian O'Kee for Pedro Severin. I want a legitimately good backup who can do something with the bat to. I just don't want a glove only backup catcher. I don't care about those guys. They aren't that valuable.
Starting point is 00:25:55 So yeah, if, you know, I can go to Tom right now and I say, hey, you want to lock this down, I'll give you one and six beyond this year, one in five, something like that. If he was open to it, I would be extremely open to it as well because that's one less thing I have to worry about this winter. And I can just go and do what I've done with the catcher position for the last few years, which is just, you know, Brian O'Keefe, Jacob Nottingham, just four A guys. and just manage the position that way. So yeah, I think, like, based on what we know right this second, I would say I would be more inclined to offer Tom an extension than I would be to trade him.
Starting point is 00:26:30 But that can really change the next few weeks as it can with a lot of players in terms of whether or not you should trade them or not. So, yeah, I just, it's hard not to think about what you could possibly. Oh, you should absolutely think about it. Yeah. Because I, like, if you can get like a guy who could play. play second base every day for you for Tom Murphy, then yeah, maybe you make that trade anyways and you say, look, you know, Cal's going to play five days a week, six days a week, and that means we got to bring Colin O'Keefe up for two days or it means we got to go sign Mike Sanino to play
Starting point is 00:27:03 for couple days a week. Do you say Colin O'Keefe? Oh, sorry. Brian O'Keefe, the good O'Keefe, let me put it that way. The good O'Keefe. You call him up or maybe you go sign Mike Zanino for, you know, whatever, and he starts two games a week. If you can get Murphy for something that helps you, like on a more regular basis than Tom Murphy is probably capable of, great. But you know what? You're not getting, you know, you're not getting Luis a rise for Tom Murphy. So, you know, and you're not traded for Gene security. You're not. Sure. Yeah. Totally. But yeah, like if you can, if you can get that guy who can help you at probably second base is probably your biggest need right now. Yeah. If you can get that guy for
Starting point is 00:27:45 Tom Murphy, then you might just run that risk of just going with O'Keefe or signing Zanino or whatever. If you can't, if it's just like, do you guys want another middle bullpen guy? No, no, I don't. I want a guy who's going to be in my lineup four or five, six days a week if I'm trading Tom Murphy this summer, if assuming, again, if you're actually competing for a playoff spot, if you're just pure sellers, all bets are off, get the best thing you can and go forward. But if you're trying to do a sideways trade with Tom Murphy, you're going to give me somebody who's a legitimate, you know, everyday option at one position or another.
Starting point is 00:28:20 Yeah, like I said, we'll talk about this more in a future episode. Again, depending on where the Mariners are at, of course, if it actually makes sense for them to entertain the idea of selling Tom Murphy. But, again, it's very rare to find a guy like Tom Murphy at the trade deadline. So even though that he's a rental What does that cost? What does that opportunity cost for a team looking to get better at catcher? Because there's going to be quite a few contenders out there
Starting point is 00:28:55 That are going to look for an upgrade at catcher And Tom Murphy As much Yeah, Murphy could start on what, 18 teams, major league baseball right now 20 teams maybe even like Keep in mind, you know Christian Vasquez last year went for willier
Starting point is 00:29:16 Brayu and Emmanuel Valdez and Valdez has already made his major league debut and he looks like he has a shot to be a an everyday player so right you can get quite a bit but you do have to you know weigh all the options right yeah a guy that can play good defense and hit on top of that from the
Starting point is 00:29:35 catcher position that's going to be something that a lot of teams are going to be interested in adding and potentially even you know get into a little bit of a bidding more for. But it's a conversation for another day. And, you know, we're not waving the white flag on this season yet. But we need to see more of what we saw the last two days of this Marys Ball Club to hop back on the bandwagon. But hey, good start. And let's have a good road trip. All right.
