Locked On Mariners - Daily Podcast On the Seattle Mariners - Mariners Make Colby's Dreams Come True, Reacquire Austin Shenton
Episode Date: November 20, 2024A little over three years after trading him in the deal that brought Diego Castillo to Seattle, the Mariners have reacquired former fifth-round draft pick Austin Shenton from the Rays for cash. Plus, ...the Reds and Royals are reportedly working on a deal that would send Jonathan India to Kansas City and Brady Singer to Cincinnati. If the trade is completed, could the Mariners benefit from India potentially pushing either Michael Massey or Maikel Garcia out of their respective roles? On today's episode of Locked-on Mariners, Colby's dreams come true, which honestly says a lot more about how small Colby dreams than anything.
But whatever, Colby, hit it.
Hate, hate, hate, hate.

Ahoy, sailors.
It is Wednesday, November 20th, 20, 24.
This is Tadda Gazzalus and Colby Padden.
for the Lockdown Marriss podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
The Marrists have made their first trade of the offseason.
We'll discuss that as well as how this rumored Brady Singer for Jonathan India trade between the Reds and the Royals could impact the Mariners.
Though that trade still hasn't been completed, even though that rumor came out, I don't know, four or five days ago.
But before we get into all that, shout out to our title sponsor today.
FanDuel.
New customers can place a $5 bet and you'll get started with.
$150 in bonus bets.

All you have to do is click the link in the description
of this episode.
So, uh, congratulations, Colby.
You got what you wanted.
Austin Shetton.
He's back.
Former fifth round pick of the mirrors back in 2019.
Was obviously part of the Diego Castillo trade in the summer of 2021.
The mayor has reportedly tried to reacquire him a couple of summers ago in a deal that would have reportedly sent Tayasca Hernandez to Tampa Bay.
That ultimately fell through and Teo wrapped up the year with the M's.
But the mayors get Shetton back nonetheless after he was DFAed a few days ago by the raise to make room for Shetton on the 40-man roster.
The Mariners DFAed J.T. Chagua, who they of course acquired for.
from the Miami Marlins, this previous deadline.
Cash goes back to the raise in this deal,
so nothing really to speak of in terms of the return.
So Shetton is going to be part of at least the infield depth for the Mariners.
We'll see if maybe he's able to earn himself a role on the 26-man roster exiting camp.
But this is a guy that, of course, has dominated pretty much every level of the minors.
he's never posted a WRC plus south of 100 in the miners.
He even had a 120 WRC plus in his cup of coffee at the Major League level this past year
with the raise.
Just 19 games, but slash 214, 340, 405.
It's 120 WRC plus.
Like I said, 28% K rate, 16% walk rate with home run and 3 RBI.
So, yeah.
Again, you got your man, Coli.
How are you feeling?
feeling really good really good that's you know the clean way to say it so uh yeah you know family
friendly podcast here more or less uh so yeah i'm feeling good you know shenton is a guy that
that i've liked since the mariner's taking him local guy born in spokane raised in bellingham went
to belview uh cc before he transferred to florida atlantic uh fifth round pick and he just
like you said he hits he hits everywhere he's been all along the miners he's
He's got probably, I would say, average to above average, left-handed power.
You know, pretty decent average, just like hit tool in general.
He's probably more of a first basement at this stage, but he has played a lot of third.
So it'll be interesting to see what the mayors want to do there is Shinton.
Part of the third base mix, and he's going to go down to Tacoma and play triple A or play third base in AAA and see if he can actually still do that.
I think that's probably what's likely.
He's got two options left.
So plenty of flexibility here.
he's got him for six years if you want it but he's going to be 27 entering this year so it's really
you know kind of now or never for shenton if he's going to be anything more than kind of an
up and down back and forth type of middle or corner infielder so pretty interesting just
you know player profile in general really a player profile just like taking away how i how much
i like austin shenton like the person like just taking that away like yeah this is a good move for
the mariners they needed some corner infield depth in the high miners guy who can come up and can
actually play the big leagues and survive and manage at the very least.
And you know, you kind of look around at what the Mariners have now and you go, okay,
you know, if disaster strikes, they have Shinton, they have Locklear, they have Bliss,
they have Rivas, and that's obviously on top of guy like Dylan Moore.
So they have some good depth in the minors with guys who have, you know, at least been to
the big leagues and survived, gotten their cup of coffee and, you know, they're a little bit
older.
They've been around the block.
So it's a good, solid depth move.
absolutely worth a 40-man spot.
But yeah, Shinton is just, like I said, it's an awesome story.
Born in Spokane, was, you know, adopted when he was five years old, moved to Bellingham,
grew up there, and, you know, went to Bellevue Community College to start his college career
for transferring to Florida Atlantic.
And then fifth round pick and all that, he's worked his way up to the big leagues.
This guy's had to earn it everywhere along the way.
By all accounts, he's a really good dude.
He's a great guy.
And teammates seem to really.
enjoy, you know, being around him and playing for him.
So it's a good guy with a good track record of hitting in the minors and even a little
bit of a track record of some major league success.
Again, only 50 plate appearances, I think.
So it's not anything to draw, you know, massive conclusions from.
But this is the type of guy that, you know, is not surprised that Jerry wants and he goes after.
It's, again, high character, high minor league performer, uh, who has, you know, obviously,
uh, really impressed the Mariners for the brief.
brief period he was here because the mariner this is not the first time that the mariners fed tried
to get him back after trading him they didn't want to trade him in the first place so uh obviously
the mariner's really see something here i think the bat uh just the power profile fits really well
at team mobile park as well so i think he given enough at bats he could do enough damage 20 25
home runs type of thing uh and yeah and he performed in triple a and again it's worth noting he
performed in the triple a in the uh not in the PCL but in the international league the
PCL is bandbox and, you know, you put up 250, 350, 450, 450, and be like a 98 WRC plus in the
PCL.
He did it in the International League, which is much more pitcher-friendly.
Again, 20, he'll be 27, I think, in January.
So he's not exactly a prospect.
He's not exactly a big leaguer, but this is exactly the type of guy you needed to add
and the fact that the Mariners really like him and the fact that, you know, he is a Pacific Northwest
guy and he's got the cool story about, you know, growing up.
in foster care before being adopted.
It's all great.
And so I'm really excited to see him.
I hope he survives the winter.
I'm pretty sure he will.
He makes a lot of sense on this roster because he does have the two options left.
And because you can move him up and down, up and down as needed for the 2025 season.
So, you know, really excited.
I hope he gets an opportunity.
He's going to have to hit.
He's, you know, both buried a little bit on the depth charts.
But he's going to have to hit to get here.
And I think he probably will.
the only red flag really in his profile,
strikeouts are a little bit higher than you want him to be.
So something he's got to work on.
He does counteract that with the walks, though.
Yes, it walks a lot.
Again, good pop.
Probably more like 30 doubles, 20 home runs than like 35 home runs type of power.
But it should play fine at first base.
And if you can get him to a point where he's even like playable at third base for,
you know, a couple times a month, like that would really improve his odds of, you know,
helping this team and really grow odds of sticking at the big league level.
So yeah,
I'm really excited for Shent.
I'm,
it's fun.
You know,
I'm excited.
It's fun when you kind of,
you know,
you just randomly kind of pick a guy and,
and you just kind of ride with him for a while.
And,
you know,
you know,
I've made calls like this before.
They usually don't work out that well.
So I'm hoping that Shinton has at least one or two moments that I can hang
on to.
But yeah,
you know,
the Jake Bowers and the Keon Broxons of the world,
It didn't exactly crush it with the Mariners, but, you know, I think, you know, maybe Austin Shetton's the exception to the rule.
It'd be nice.
It would be a cool story.
It'd be cool to see it, you know, all kind of come full circle for Shetton, going to, you know, go back to the organization that he was drafted by, getting to, you know, go back to the state that he's from, all that good stuff.
So, yeah, we'll see.
It's a fun acquisition.
And again, it costs the Mariners literally nothing to land.
So it's free.
It's free depth.
Yeah.
It's, I would say given what he's done down on the miners, it's high quality depth, too.
It's kind of like Dom-Can zone like where you're like, okay, like he can do some things.
And there's a possibility left that he's still kind of, it all clicks for him and it pops.
And all of a sudden you find this diamond in the rough.
So yeah, just kind of thing like, yeah, you probably don't, you don't want to build around the idea that he's going to be anything.
but he certainly could be.
And if he does, it's all gravy.
But if you do need him for a couple weeks,
he'll probably find a way to contribute.
So in that type of thing,
like we talked with Ryan Bliss and Leo Rivas and Dom Gansone,
you need those guys at AAA that kind of been there,
done that, but are young enough,
have options and all that stuff.
So Shetton's a great add to the back end of your roster.
100%.
All right.
So we are going to talk a little bit about this
rumored Jonathan India Brady Singer deal that still hasn't gone through.
But it could have an impact on the Mariners if it does go through.
And we're also going to tell you how you can win some of Colby's cards and some gift
certificates to Simply Seattle in just a moment.

And you go walk away
with one of these really cool cards
and quite possibly some new swag as well.
So that's right.
Let's do it.
In the description,
of course.
So be sure to refer to those.
if you want to see it all laid out.
All right.
So a few days ago, it was reported,
I forget who first had it.
I think it was the athletic.
It was Roosevelt, I think.
Yeah, it was reported that the Reds and the Royals
are discussing a trade centered around Jonathan, India,
and Brady Singer.
Typically, when you hear a report that's that specific,
something's about to go down.
But at the time of this recording,
that trade still hasn't happened.
So maybe something's falling through.
I don't know.
But nothing has been reported that suggests that it's fallen through.
Nothing has been reported that suggests it's moved forward either.
So I don't know.
It's kind of in this weird purgatory right now.
But obviously, India is someone that we've talked about a lot with the Mariners.
So that aspect.
to it obviously pertains to the merrars, but also
India
doesn't make a ton of sense for the royals
because second base they have Michael Massey, at third base,
they have Michael Garcia.
So you would think that if they did land India,
they would look to move off from Michael Massey
or Michael Garcia, correct?
So Colby should the merrists have interests
in one of those guys if the royals do complete this trade
and land Jonathan India?
Sure. As always, it's about cost. Particularly, Michael Garcia is really interesting. He is a phenomenal defensive third baseman who hits much more like a speedy second baseman. But times he's tried to play second. It hasn't gone that well now. It's a very small sample and he's played third his entire life. He's a really good athlete. He had 37 stolen bases last year. So I think, you know,
given enough time at the position, he could transition very nicely to second base.
But he is a fantastic defensive third baseman, which, you know, kind of cloud slings.
Because if you're acquiring him, a lot of his value is based on third base defense, which is valuable.
But he's not a third base bad, particularly this last year.
He had a terrible year at the plate.
So it's kind of this weird little, you know, gray area where he might be valuable.
he might not.
He might be just be, you know, a more souped up version of Josh Rojas, which the Mariners just had.
So that doesn't really help.
But at least he steals 30 bags, you know, and that is interesting.
So Garcia is super interesting from that regard.
Apparently he's already generated trade interests.
So, you know, we're not the only ones thinking this.
And he's 24, I believe, 25.
So he is young.
He was pretty good in 2023 at the plate.
So Michael Garcia is interesting.
Michael Massey to me feels more like a mariner target.
He is a second baseman, true second baseman,
who kind of profiles more offensively as a third baseman, right?
It's kind of this weird flip-flop thing here.
Now, Massey doesn't have like tremendous over-the-wall power,
but he's got good pop.
He slugged 445, I think, 450 somewhere in that range.
You know, he's got 20 home run power in his bat.
I'm really certain of that.
But despite me saying he feels more,
mariner E than Michael Garcia.
Dude doesn't get on base, like
sub 300 on base.
So he is an interesting player
as well. So you have two players who aren't
like your prototypical
bat profiles
for the position that they are best at.
But Michael Garcia
is a righty.
Massey is a lefty.
Massey more power. Garcia, more
defense and speed. So
they're both interesting to
a certain extent.
I don't know that I would be like super aggressive on either of them,
just because the warts are pretty obvious.
But when you have a hole as big as the Mariners do at second and third base,
you have to consider everybody.
You have to consider all possibilities.
So yeah, I think the Mariners will be interested in either of these guys.
If this India trade does go down, you know, the nice thing about both of these guys is
neither one of them really strikes out much, a lot of contact.
So again, it just kind of, do you want more on base and speed upside or do you want more power upside?
And again, it's just, Messi's pretty good at second.
Like he's not elite at second base, but pretty good range at second base as well.
So it's not like you have to move Massey.
And we talked about it.
Like if you're going to have a below average profile at third base, you got to make up that power in a traditional nonpower position.
The mayors are already doing that a little bit with Julio and Cal.
well, they could do it at second base as well
and actually improve pretty significantly defensively
over what they had last year as well.
So Massey is the guy that I would prefer.
Garcia would be super interesting though,
especially if you think you can get them back to the 2023 version.
And, you know, I think Mariner fans probably remember
how much of a menace Michael Garcia was to the Mariners
a few years back where it was just him and Bobby Witt hitting one and two
and just destroying Mariners pitching in 2023.
So he's got to get back to that.
But again, both these guys, pretty interesting.
And the price, I'm not sure what they would cost, but that's my hang up.
I think they might be a little bit too expensive for the production they put forth so far.
76 WRC plus and 1,100 plate appearances, over 1,100 played appearances.
I think I'm out on Garcia.
No power to speak of at third base.
Massey's interesting, though.
If they're up in a movie, Massey, and maybe they would be more so than Garcia,
if they landed the, because, you know, they would just want India to play second.
He hasn't played third, I believe, since he played in college at the University of Florida.
So, yeah.
I mean, you probably should play third.
Yeah.
Just saying.
You're listening to the Lockdown Mariners podcast.
So before we wrap things up here, let's go over a couple of house cleaning items.
There was an interesting report last night from Evan Drellich of the athletic.
Drellich, of course, deals with a lot of the,
the business side of things in Major League Baseball.
He spoke with Rob Manfred, obviously, Commissioner of Major League Baseball,
who said the Mariners are now partly in MLB's in-house broadcasting group.
Quote, it's just complicated because they have distribution agreements that ran longer.
We'll do the production for them, not clear how much more.
So it seems like Root Sports is.
still around for Nell, but it might be produced by Major League Baseball. I'm not really sure how to read
that quote. Yeah, we're also not like big on the business side of like, you know,
like that's not our thing, you know, and I try to have a little bit of knowledge of it, but ultimately
I just get sleepy when people talk about this stuff. And so it's not my thing. I honestly,
I don't have like a good person to tell you, like, um,
Yeah, like Jeff Baker usually is pretty good with this stuff, but like I don't know anybody who's like out there talking about this that I feel like I would trust their knowledge on what this means all that much right now.
So we're still trying to learn about this just like you guys are.
Ultimately, it doesn't sound like there's going to be that much of a difference, you know, just that we would see.
It does sound like the goal, though, is for Major League Baseball to produce all 30 teams.
teams and by 2028, I think is the timeline laid out there.
And their goal would be to like in local blackouts and and, you know, sell certain like a, like,
subscribe like, hey, you could just buy the Mariners package or that's all you.
Or you could buy the ALS package or you could buy the whole league, you know, at different
price points and all that stuff.
So I want to see how this impacts the Mariners, you know, bottom line because unfortunately
they care about that stuff and want to see if there's any extra money coming in or
or how they do this, but ultimately, like,
if you're hoping to learn more about this and what it means,
you came to the wrong podcast.
Unless Ty did some homework, I got nothing on this.
It's interesting, but I don't know why.
That's the only quote we have to work with.
And you see it on Twitter.
A lot of people are confused about what this means ultimately.
So I'm sure we'll get more information about it here in the coming days, weeks, months,
whatever.
Maybe Kevin Martinez wants to come on the Mariners podcast of record.
and explain it all to us i'm down no austin chinton but he'll be pretty good
yeah and i can ask him about my awesome chinton uh giveaway idea and i mean kevin we know you watch
the show so you want to come on we'd be happy to have you and uh have you explained
totally won't get you too many giveaway ideas i know that's not really your thing anymore but like
come on who else we're going to talk to about this yeah uh how else are we going to talk about
the randy a rosalera straight jacket giveaway
straight jacket
that's the cross-arm hoodie
the way that it's described
it does sound like a straight jacket
I need to
I need to see literally just Randy doing his
thing on a hoodie
yeah yeah I assume that's what it is but
you can check that out yourself if you ever came to
Seattle
yeah yeah yeah whatever
what do we get Kevin on and he allows you to
throw out the first pitch will you get on the plane
to come to Randy Rosarina hoodie night
and drop the first pitch as long as
as long as you're not allowed to also throw the first pitch next to me.
I mean,
I've long said that if given the opportunity,
I would throw a submarine.
Yeah,
or at the very least,
like a very low sign hour.
I don't know if I can get all the way down to submarine,
but it would be entertaining because if I nail it.
I love to see you try.
Well,
because if I nail it,
right,
like it's,
it's one of the best first pitches of all time.
Nobody throws a submarine.
And obviously,
Austin shouldn't have to catch it.
I,
hopefully he's up,
but sure.
Yeah. And Randy has to catch mine or Victor Robles since I did break the news that he was coming to Seattle.
We broke the news technically.
Well, yeah, according to ESPN, according to ESPN, the Lockdown Errors podcast broke the news.
So, yeah.
But yeah, so Kevin, if you want to hop on and explain that to us, feel free.
Yeah.
Doors always open for you, Kevin.
For sure.
Yeah, always.
It's always a good time talking to Kevin.
All right. So lastly, Mike Kirto, long time Rainier's broadcaster, has officially retired.
So not only as Dave Sims gone, now Kurtos apparently gone. Now, DeVish is trying to get the Mariners to hire Kurto as like a semi replacement for Simsy just on the radio side of things.
Yeah, yeah. I think it would be pretty cool if like,
Kurto
like they do like a thing like
Kurto gets the call or whatever
and it's like the call to the big leagues
and I think he's done a handful
of Mariners games in the past. I think he's
done major league games before
I remember incorrectly but still that'd be cool
you know like yeah long time AAA broadcaster
and right on the step of retirement
they're like you know what we're going to
the kid down in AAA and
they bring them up and he does a game or two
I think it would be a really cool thing and
And, you know, Kurto is great.
You know, he's a fixture in, you know, the Mariners minors,
and by extension, therefore, the Mariners themselves.
So, you know, this is the end and there's no like second act or no follow up with the
Mariners, you know, enjoy your retirement.
Mike, I have no idea if you listen to the show.
I imagine you don't.
But you do enjoy your retirement.
Thank you for all your calls and for, you know, helping, you know, connect to Mariners
of the future and all that stuff.
So this is the end.
Then, you know, good luck.
And I wish you a happy retirement.
So that's going to do it for us.
