This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Well, if we were happy with one win out of this series on Friday night,
and we were extremely happy with two wins and winning the series last night,
Chris Crawford, I don't know what else we can say about a series sweep against the San Diego Poder.
who came into this series pretty dang hot,
and the opposite can be said about your Seattle Mariners
after a one in five homestand,
just probably the best series of the year.
But Chris Crawford, Anish and Hersheyer with your Mariners Postcast Show.
Well, immediate thoughts right after that huge, huge, huge sweep
for your Seattle Mariners in San Diego.
I'm annoyed that I forgot my broom.
Like, I was tempted to have a nice little broom
to bring into the corner here and I forgot it.
This was awesome.
And it was great to see them win a game like this that they don't win in 2024.
No.
They just didn't, they didn't win these types of games.
And, you know, after the first three and a half innings, I'm going to be honest with you,
I start thinking about, well, sure is great that they got the first two because Michael
King just isn't going to let them get into it.
But nope, nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
They were outstanding.
And it was fun to see a bunch of two.
out hits. Two out hits are just such bites in the tookus when they're when they happen against you and so
wonderful to have when they're going right for you. I believe five straight hits in that fourth inning.
It's just a great win against a very good baseball team. And I won't say anything more about Pearl Jam
because I got yelled at offline about it as well. So I'm just, I'm just thrilled. And a bunch of people
brought up that the Vetter Cup isn't over, but they guaranteed a tie of the Vetter Cup. So that's
great. What's the tie-off that you have to listen to that Going Hungry song with
them and audio slave or whatever the heck it was? I don't know. I don't like Pearl Jam.
Yeah, that was my bad yesterday. I was a little premature on the Better Cup champions.
We get excited. Proclamation, but that just goes to show you how little I care about the
actual champion of the Better Cup. But yeah, huge series, I think overall in the grand scheme of the
season. This, I think, at least negates the homestand, even though it's only three games versus
the six games that you had in the homestand. You had a bad series against Toronto, and I think
the Mariners are a better team than Toronto Blue Jays. But the Yankees series, like, that was just
against a good team, and the game three could have gone either way. I think you performed better
than a one in five homestand overall in that homestand.
But this absolutely makes up for it because a lot of people are saying the Padres are one of the best teams to MLB.
And I don't necessarily disagree with that.
But the Mariners came out and absolutely dominated 15 to three run differential over a three-game series in San Diego with two of your non-starting five starters going.
I think says a lot about where this team is at.
right now. There's no question about it. And the fact that they were able to get those wins with
those six and seven starters. And then then your ace is on the mound. And I, and I'm just saying it.
He is your ace right right right now. The way he's pitched over these last three of the last four
starts has been absolutely spectacular. And what's funny is, and we'll talk about Mitch Garver
and a spoiler alert, we'll talk about Mitch Garver in a second. But I thought Mitch Garver actually
called a pretty poor game today and relied too much on sliders. That call for a one-two slider to
Tatease. Oh, I was mad. I was really, really upset because there was no reason to do it. Like,
throw that fastball. He should be at that 70% fastball mark. It is a really, really, really good pitch
that he should rely on. They tried to use the slider, I think, a little bit too much today.
But his fastball was so good, it didn't matter. And sure, he didn't generate the type of
to swing and misses he did against the Yankees.
But he got enough of them and so much weak contact.
How many times did we see San Diego hitters pop up today?
Like just meekly fly out to either center field or in the infield.
So such little hard contact, especially after the first two innings, Brian Wu was absolutely phenomenal today.
And if we started a playoff series tomorrow, if we started it tomorrow, Brian Wood wouldn't be available.
But if the playoffs were to start, Brian Wu, you're lining up to be your game one starter, if that's all possible.
Yeah, I mean, look, you don't have Logan Gilbert and George County available.
Right.
So that adds to it a little bit.
But if this is your rotation, all due respect to Luis Castillo, Brian Wu is that starter.
Brian Wu is him right now.
Yeah, and as you can see on our little side of the on today's page, Brian Wu is him as the kid.
kids say. And you were talking about those two out hits. You know, another thing that kids say,
those just hit different. They hit different. So I'm with you on that one. Yeah, I think the ability
to go six plus, he's gone six in every start that he's had this season, at least. And he went seven
a day. He probably could have gone eight, honestly. I think he should have gone eight, by the way.
We could probably talk about that a little bit. This was not necessarily my favorite Dan Wilson
managed game after one of me.
my favorite Dan Wilson managed games.
I didn't understand going to Vargas there in the 8th.
And it ends up working out.
You know, he gives up those two runners.
Let Brian Wu cook.
Let Brian Wu get to 100 pitches.
I want to get to Brian Wu to 100 pitches as much as possible because you're going
to need Brian Wu to be at that mark when you get into these games matter.
But when these games really, really matter, I need Brian Wu to be built up to go 100
pitches as much as possible.
Let him at least get in some trouble.
Let him at least like, and I get exiting him when you have success and you want to say,
oh, seven innings of one run baseball and that's great.
Brian Wu easily could have given you eight innings of one run baseball today.
I would have let him keep going.
Carlos Vargas was extremely fortunate to get out of that mess, a hard hit double play ball.
But, okay, he does get the job done.
A little bit of scariness there after Dan Wilson was my hero from last.
game. It wasn't my villain. It just wasn't my favorite game from him today.
Yeah. And I think managers always, it's such a delicate balance between trying to be
proactive and take the pitcher out before he implodes versus maybe doing it too early and
trying to outthink the room a little too much. And there's many ways you can think about it.
If you're up by five runs, maybe it's like, all right, let's get our start to some rest.
We can put in our kind of lower leverage relievers to kind of get through the rest of
inning or you just let him go i'm i'm usually in the type of guy in close games and it this is kind of a
feel thing if the last couple innings the guys have started to get to him a little bit uh and and
he still gets through seven innings even if the pitch count isn't super high that's where i'm like
all right you could tell he's about to implode you i did not think that for one second with brian woo
today i would have been totally fine putting him out there for the eighth inning and uh especially after having
to go at least four and two-thirds innings with your bullpen last night.
Four and a third.
Yeah, sorry, four and a third.
But, yeah, I would have thought that that would have been at least a consideration for
Dan Wilson, but it seemed pretty instantaneous as soon as he got through seven that he was
going to Vargas in the eighth inning.
Yeah, absolutely.
And that's not my favorite thing.
And it's, you know, those who kind of wonder how much the manager is making decisions
for the Seattle Mariners,
may point to a game like this and say, oh, okay, okay, maybe this is a little bit from the upper
powers suggesting just have them go seven today at most. But look, it ends up working out.
Carlos Vargas does end up getting that double play. But to your point, it was actually on the
contrary. Like, he struggled in those first two winnings. He was fortunate to just give up that one run.
From that point on, Brian Wu pretty much sailed. And that matters too, because look, pitch counts are pitch
counts, it's not a battery that you can just recharge, you know, you do tire out.
But there's no doubt that there's those pitches from inning three to six were not stressful
pitches. Like he didn't deal with base runners all that often. And when he did, he quickly got
rid of him. It was a sensational start. I'd just like to see my ace, who he is your ace right now.
Yeah. Go eight innings when you can get him eight innings. Yeah, I think there is a little bit
the part of the season that you're at,
like the ability to
kind of go to a couple lower leverage guys
like a Carlos Vargas,
maybe get just get some innings in for those guys
who maybe haven't pitched in the last couple days.
I don't hate the decision,
but I'm with you.
I probably would have gone to it.
But we're grasping at straws at this point.
Yeah, for sure.
Huge, huge series.
I am such a big fan of how the Mariners played.
I'm as impressed as I've been in at least a year,
at least last maybe even two years.
of how the Mariners are playing baseball at this point.
This is one of the better series that I can remember in a long, long time.
Brian Wu's start to the offense performing.
Send us in on your comments who your unsung hero is.
I have an idea who I'm going with for mine,
but I'll let you know.
I can be convinced otherwise.
So if someone puts in a comment that is really smart,
doesn't really happen that often.
Sometimes it does.
If you could convince me of your unsung hero,
might change it and give you a little bit of credit on the way.
But let's break it down a little bit.
After the Tate's Homer, and literally the first battle that Brian Wu faced,
it looked like he kind of was cruising through.
Let's go, let's go to the offense for a little bit here.
Our unsung hero a couple times, last couple games,
Randy or Rosalena with the game tying home run, that was a big point in the game,
in my opinion.
It's massive.
Like, I don't think you can overstate how big that Homer was.
because for the first three and two-thirds innings, this offense looked, as the kids say, cooked.
Like, it looked like it was going to be one of those days where they just didn't have it.
But then Randy Rose Arena comes up massive and ties that game.
And then they get four straight hits.
And, you know, it doesn't matter when it happens, but it's nice for that to happen all in a row like that.
Because, you know, I think it probably hurt King's confidence a little bit to have.
have that home run because you're thinking no hitter before that Randy home run.
Yeah, he was breezing through this thing.
His command was so good.
But then the Homer, I believe that Tellez double right after that.
Then five straight hits.
And I believe I saw that this was the first time the Mariners have had five straight hits with two out since like 2004 or something like that.
It's been a long time.
It was great to see.
And it was huge.
And to be honest with you, it was nice to see especially a little bit of luck.
with the Mitch Garver infield single there.
Oh, excuse me, the Master Boni infield single there.
Because Leone Tavarrobbard a baseball.
And if not for the ground rule double, that run was going to score.
And you're kind of thinking, you only get two out of this inning
after you have so much hard contact back to back to back to back.
But then a little bit of fortune breaks their way.
And they do get that third run.
I felt so confident once the Mariners had that two run lead that this was going to be a win
based on how Wu was pitching, who by the way, it's five and one now.
And I know wins and losses, blah, blah, blah.
It's really fun to see him be rewarded for his success.
I just saw that stat right now.
It was awesome to see, but it all starts with that a Rose Arena Homer because it literally
opened the floodgates.
Yeah, again, King had no hitter before that point.
We're at top four at this point.
That's not nothing going into the fourth inning without a hit.
Randy ties it with the solo blast, Rowdy with the double, Garver with the
single, Tavares RBI double, and then the Master Boney RBI infield single, big inning for
the Mariners who get four on Michael King, who's been one of the better pitchers in the National
League all season. They get him out similar to Max Fried, very, very, very reminiscent of the
Max Free game, one of the better pitchers. They get him out before the sixth inning, and guys
who have just like cruised through many lineups, many good lineups in this league seem to have
issue with this Mariners team. And I think that's a huge development for this offense.
I can't help but look back on 2024.
And the Mariners were a bad offensive team in 2024.
I had somebody arguing with me that, and I appreciate their opinion,
but I would think that scoring 20 being 20th and runs would equal bad offense.
But, you know, some advanced stats that disagree with that.
But I will say this, the Mariners were absolutely carved up by aces,
carved up by anything that you could even call an ace.
Well, look what they have done again.
against Tarek Scoubel, what they have done against Garrett Crochet, what they have done against
Max Fried, and now what they've done against Michael King. And even Nick Povetta, although, you know,
Nick Povetta pitched pretty well. So we'll take that back. The guys that they have faced that are
considered top of the rotation guys, they've had their way with. And they've gotten them out of the game
quickly. Like they have done such a good job of working counts, even if the results aren't great at first,
doing just enough to make sure that these guys can't go seven innings, eight innings.
It's been massive. And to see those kind of results against quality pitchers,
yeah, you're supposed to beat up on the bad guys. But when you're competent against the good guys
and beat up on the bad guys, that makes you a good offense. And right now the Seattle
Mariners, with a few exceptions, and especially at the beginning of the year, but that's over now.
Yeah. The struggles are done. And the Seattle Mariners are playing well.
against really good pitchers.
Yeah, and especially if you look at the eye test,
like I'm someone who likes to look at the stats a lot.
But when it comes to how an offense is performing
at least less than two months into the season,
it's an eye test thing, right?
How good are they at bats?
Are they getting pitchers out early in the game?
Are they, you know, battling out there with two strikes?
And all of those things are true at this point.
Things that you couldn't say about the 2024,
and 2023 for that matter, Seattle Mariners teams.
So I think that's the biggest development for me.
And like we've mentioned before, it takes a toll.
You get into their bullpen earlier later in the series when they want to go to those
higher leverage guys, they can't.
You saw Matsui today work for the second straight time, walk the bases loaded.
That's how the Mariners get their two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning.
It's just these things add up in a long baseball season, whether it's a series,
whether it's a month or whether it's the entire season, these things add up.
And those little parts of being in a good offensive team, I think, is the biggest development
for why the Mariners team is performing so much better on the offensive side of the ball this
year.
I would absolutely agree.
One thing real quick before I forget about it.
Anders and I were, you know, we get in here ahead of time because we want to make sure we
don't screw up.
Eduardo Vizardo nearly gave us a heart attack today when it was a 6-1 game and he could
not find the strike zone today. We just about went apoplectic. It's just so hard to watch a
five run lead and watch a guy not be able to throw the strike zone. But credit to Bizarro,
just like Vargas, they give up a couple of guys on base with nobody out and they end up
getting the job done. It wasn't pretty. And anybody who walks anyone with a five run lead should
have to be audited. But at the end of the day, it worked out. But Anders and I just about lost our
you know what while we were watching bizardo not find the strike zone yeah and he's he's being
nice when he says and i was really just me uh yeah i was going a little crazy because there's there's
there's meltdowns like i guess the first one i could think of is uh vargas when he threw the pitch
to erin judge and he hits it out great you just you tip your cap sometimes a really good hitter
hits a really good pitch but when you're up five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning trying to
close out a sweep, you should not be walking anyone.
Just throw strikes every single time.
And I know that's easier said than done.
But my God, it's like if they hit a solo blast, I would rather them hit a solo blast
at that point than walk two guys.
I straight up would rather that.
Yeah, I mean, that's a little Jack Morris of you and that you may not get that reference
because you're a young guy that the whole pitch to the score thing is kind of.
But I also understand that self-inflicted damage when you're up.
by five runs is incredibly frustrating.
But at the end of the day, he got the job done.
And really, outside of a few clunkers, Bizarro has gotten the job done.
Like, he's been a fairly average relief pitcher.
And since he's the 12 or 13.
He's probably your lowest leverage guy at this point.
A thousand percent.
Yeah.
Absolutely.
He honestly, to me, when, when Trent Thornton is ready to come back,
they're going to have an interesting decision to make there about
which guy you send down. Maybe it's Troy Taylor because you want to have him getting more
consistent work in Tacoma. But I think Troy Taylor in the long term is really important for you.
And, you know, maybe you want to keep him up on the major league roster to work with those guys.
It'll be an interesting decision. Yeah, that'll be for time, Colby, to figure out.
Once again, guys, remember, you can tune into their show on Monday. They're going to have a
big breakdown of the full series. We're just reacting to this game specifically, but we're pretty
excited. Mariner sweep the San Diego Padres 15 to three run differential over the entire weekend. That's
huge. That's just an absolute domination by the Seattle Mariners pitching staff more than anything
else, but then the offense as well, doing everything they need to do really quick before we get into
our unsung hero segment. I want you guys to comment in who your unsung hero of the game was today.
Like I said, I have an idea of who mine is. I can't speak for Chris. But I have an idea of who I'm
choosing. But if you guys convince me otherwise, I might be able to choose you. And,
give you some love along the way. But before we get to that, let's get and talk to,
talked about some wonderful pistachios. Now, Chris Crawford, I don't know if I'm going to be
able to talk the wonderful pistachios ad read that I did on Monday for our first broadcast,
but I will try and do as much as I possibly can to get to that point. So if you're looking
for a snack that's both delicious and nutritious, crack into a good source of protein with
wonderful pistachios. Wonderful pistachios is one of the highest,
protein nuts. Each one ounce serving has six grams of protein giving you a 10% of your daily value. Plus,
they're packed with fiber and better for you unsaturated fats to help you keeping fuller longer.
We talked about this before. I'm going to say it again, give me the unshilled pistachio. I'm a very
busy man who is making tens of dollars an hour. Need to make sure that I do have to waste time
pulling that. I get the feel of the nut, but at the same time, either way, if you give me a
pistachio, I'm going to eat it. And I'd like some right now, please, and thank you. Yeah, I'm with
you on that. And I just overall, in terms of the nut hierarchy, just go crazy with that one. Why don't
you comment section? Please do. I think pistachios is near the top for me, because like I just, I really like
the taste. What they say about feeling full after you eat it is very, very true. Plus, you get a little
Yep.
Protein when you're kind of just snacking on some things,
but you can't be said about other things.
But get snacking and get cracking with the snack that packs a protein punch.

And one more thing that we need to talk about, Chris Crawford, is Fanduel,
because unfortunately, with the NBA playoffs going on right now,
we saw the Thunder absolutely dominate game seven.
It wasn't even close.
Actually, it was pretty thankful that I could turn it off as soon as I could so I could focus on the Mariners game.
But with the NBA playoffs in full swing, every night delivers highly worthy performances, major momentum shifts, and can't miss moments.
There were some missed moments in that Thunder Nuggets game, but that's okay.
Whether it's a game winning shot or a breakout player, there's never been a better time to get in on the action with Fandual.
Van Duel makes it easy to stay in the game before tip off and live with player props, performance trends, and same game parlays.
fans have more ways than ever to play smart and win big.
If you want to play smart and win big, bet on Anthony Edwards to have some monster games against the Denver Nuggets.
Bet on my good buddy who doesn't know who I am, but I love watching and play.
Tyrese Halliburton to have a bunch of big games against the Knicks.
And bet on the Florida Panthers winning game seven tonight.
Just do all of those things, become rich.
And if you want to send me some money, I'll let you know how to do that.
All right.
That sounds fun, Chris Crawford.
You're the Fandul.
It's the perfect time to sign up.
Head to Fandul.com and place your first $5 bet.
If it wins, you'll get $200 in bonus bets.

All right, let's get to it.
Our unsung hero portion of the show.
Chris Crawford, a lot you go first.
I think I have a pretty idea for who mine is.
But I'm seeing a couple other shouts out there for a player.
that I was also thinking about, but who's yours today?
Yeah, I was going to do it before the comment section,
just to make sure that's high. I'm cool.
I'm going Leo Rivas.
Okay.
The Jockey did defensively was so good today.
Another couple of quality at bat.
Leo Rivas needs to be the starting second basement of the Seattle Marit.
Totally agree.
All due respect to Miles Master Boni,
all due respect to Dylan Moore,
who can definitely play second base against left-handed pitching.
Yeah.
Leo Rivas is just a more complete player,
is so weird to say about a guy with on the 2080 scouting scale,
I'd probably give his power a negative eight.
But it doesn't matter because his batts are so good.
He makes pictures work.
He's kind of like having that second leadoff guy.
It's been nice because you have J.P.
Crawford as a real lead off guy doing a nice job.
And then you have a guy who can get on base in front of those guys in Rivas as well.
Now, it's going to fall, but you cannot deny the job that Leo Rivas did.
And that play he made today.
Oh my goodness gracious.
That is one of the best plays I've seen from a second baseman since Robbie Canoe.
And it has been a real treat to watch somebody who was not on the Mariners radar whatsoever in 2024
and didn't make the roster in 2025 to begin the year.
Well, now he's become a pretty important part of their roster.
And I'm not saying you don't look to upgrade at second base.
But the fact that Leo Rivas had had games like today so often has made
that less of a hindrance.
Yeah, and I think he brings value in so many different ways.
I think he might be your best defensive player at second base at this point.
He's a switch hitter.
He gets on base at an insane clip.
Does he still have an above 500 OBP?
Probably not at this point.
All the way down to 441.
RIP 500 on base.
Yeah, that's all right.
We'll take a 431 OBP from your nine hitter.
Yes. But yeah, I think a platoon at second base of Leo Rivas against Ritey's and Dimo against lefties would be absolutely the way to go at this point moving forward. Should be also noted that, you know, you give Ben Williamson the day off today with Master Toney playing third base. I think he looked fine there. He made a couple of plays that you need to do. He's not the elite defensive player as Ben Williamson, but it's good to know that he can fill in at that spot when you absolutely need him to. But I'm going to go with.
I know we talked about him earlier on the negative side,
but I'm going to go positively here with Mitch Garver.
For someone who, you know, has gotten a lot of hate
because he was signed ahead of 2024 to be your full-time DH,
really didn't work out last year,
was a little bit better when they moved into the backup catcher role,
catching only for George Kirby every fifth day.
He's been better this year offensively,
and today two for four, an RBI, a run scored, and 105 mile per hour exit Velo lineouts.
That could have easily been another hit.
I think, yes, he has his limitations behind the plate.
And I think if we were comparing into almost any other catcher besides Cal Raleigh,
we wouldn't notice it as much.
Maybe not.
But I think there's something to be said about being able to give Cal that fifth day off from behind the plate
without feeling like you're throwing an absolute black hole into the lineup,
like a lot of teams do at this point with their backup catcher.
I think he still has a pretty damn good off base percentage at this point in the season.
He's starting to feel a little more confident at the plate.
If he can provide zero to slightly above average offensive value to you,
he's a good player to keep on this roster.
He had a good day today.
And a couple big moments in the game with the RBI and the run scored as well.
So just a little quick shout out to Mitch Garber because I know a lot of people kind of feel similarly about him as Donovan Solano.
I think he has a much bigger role in this team than Solano does.
Oh, absolutely.
Yeah, well, in part because the Mariners aren't going to dump that salary.
Like maybe at the halfway point, if he was hitting like Donovan Solano, they would maybe consider it.
But no, Mitch Garber's done a nice job.
I'd love to see him drive the baseball a little more.
He made pretty good contact today.
I think you said 106 on that ball that was lined out to left field.
That was hit pretty hard.
Yeah, Mitch Garver is not the guy that we wanted, but that doesn't mean that Mitch Garber
can't be a useful player for you.
Like there's the purpose for him to play against left-handed pitching, to give Big
Dumber a chance to DH.
Hopefully someday Mitch Garver or Cal Rally will actually get a day off.
Like, I don't think the goal is for him to play 162 games.
If anybody could do it, though, it is my sweet, sweet big dumper.
But yeah, Mitch Garver has done a very solid job.
He's become a dink and dunk hitter more than a power guide, which is weird to say.
By the way, Anders and I were looking up the stats just before.
It's still crazy how much better he is offensively when he catches compared to DH.
And it's no longer that's all of a sample size.
So he's clearly more comfortable behind the plate.
Maybe something the Mariners should have done a little more due diligence before,
but they know now that he is a catcher, a guy who occasionally will get some time at DH,
but he is a catcher, not as good as Big Dumber, but that doesn't mean he doesn't serve a purpose.
Yeah, and that's, you know, that's not saying much because Big Dumber right now is the best
catcher in the game.
So if you're not as good as the best catcher in the game, you're still, have a chance to be
pretty and good.
So yeah, absolutely.
Yeah.
So I think he's a perfectly serviceable backup catcher at this point.
It's, I don't, I'm not one to look into how much you're paying a back.
up catcher. I understand. It's not
nothing, but
I don't care. I think
we really, really, really
can kind of overlook that
part of the game. Bring Ty Dayne back.
Yeah, he's still here, just so you guys know.
You'll be getting him
tomorrow with the
Locked on Mariners podcast. We're just the
postcast, myself, Anderson Hurst, and Christopher
Crawford. We're reacting to every single
Mariners game right after the
final pitch. You guys will still get your daily
podcast with Ty and Kobe. Don't you
worry about that. You won't have to look at our faces for that much longer. I'm pretty worried.
I'm pretty worried. It's very concerning. I hope they bring thank you dang back as soon as possible.
I assume that's what TY stands for, right? Thank you, Dane. Oh yeah. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what the
kids say nowadays when you get res'd in Fortnight.
