This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day.
Now, that is a Mariners pitching performance that we are used to.
We are live with the Mariners Postcast show here on the Lockdown Mariners YouTube channel.
Thank you so much, everyone, for tuning in.
It's Anderson Hers here with Christopher Crawford.
what a win to snap the four-game losing streak,
winning game two against the New York Yankees,
Brian Wu excellent.
Christopher Crawford, instant thoughts
after that extra inning win for the Mariners.
Oh, boy, did we need that.
And by we, I mean the Mariners, I mean Mariner fans,
the nation, everyone outside of whatever area code
the New York Yankees are playing in.
We needed that.
To lose that game after you get that starting pitching performance
and to potentially lose it the way they could have
would have been absolutely devastating.
I would have been thrown off this channel
for saying way too many swear words.
It's just something that would have had to have happened.
But now I'll just say,
expletive, yeah, go M's.
That is one of the best wins of the year.
And one of the most, you can tell me how early it is all you want,
one of the most impactful wins of the 2025 season.
Yeah, I think kind of we set the table yesterday
with this series kind of tells you what that Toronto series is if you kind of come back and set things right.
Even if you lose the series, but you lose like close games.
I think that kind of make sure that the Toronto sweep was a blip in the radar and not anything bigger than that.
Wins like this is what's going to kind of get these guys back on track.
You're going to go through ups and downs throughout the season, but wins like this are huge.
What a net bat from JP.
What a net bat from Ben Williamson right before.
that. I just think these guys
battled and battled and battled, but I'm going to start
with the pitching. Because every single pitcher for the Mariners
who pitched tonight, I think, did their job.
And you can maybe say Munoz,
there was some iffy things going on.
Really bad luck with the
check swing hit by pitch on his
hands, then the check swing
swinging bunt to first baseman
Dylan Moore. We'll get to that play later. But just overall,
the pitching performance. Brian Wu,
I don't know if it's hyperbole to
say this might have been the best start by any mariner at this point in the 2025 season.
What say you? I can't think of a better one. I really can't. And you have to take the context in here, too.
You have to add in the fact that you're talking about a team that has lost four straight games after
such a good road trip and such a great round of games to have, you know, a must win is probably
a little too hyperbolic, but it's pretty close. And for him to have that good of command, the
fastball up in the zone was just dominating, just absolutely dominating.
You know, Aaron Judge has some hard contact.
We have to talk about Julio and the play he makes in center field and just the unreal
athleticism that that dude possesses.
But his command was so good today.
The stuff was so good.
Relyed heavily on the fastball because the fastball was working.
It was such an effective offering and they couldn't catch up to it.
When they did catch up to it, they made weak contact with it with one exception and a
terrific play. Yeah, I don't think there's any question that this was. And maybe it's just me
being short on memory. I don't think there's any question. This was the best start from a
Mariner this year. Yeah. I mean, maybe there was a Logan Gilbert one in there, maybe even other
Brian Wu one. Yeah. But he's him against the Rangers was awfully good the other day. But that Texas
lineup is 10 pounds of crap at a five pound bag right now. This Yankee lineup is not. It is the
very best run scoring team in baseball. So to do that, sorry to interrupt you, sir. No, no. One that I was
thinking of that maybe. Yeah, I completely agree. I think what you were saying about the context,
about who you're going against, especially given the previous, I think five or six starts,
the Mariners gave up at least five earned runs. To have him go seven plus, or sorry, six plus
into the seventh inning. Right. To give your team some length after having to use a lot of
bullpen recently, even though you still had to eventually do that because you went to the 11th inning.
Right. Still having Brian Wu get into the seven.
seventh inning was so huge for this team. So absolutely must-needed performance. And I think that
solidifies him, at least at this point in the season, that solidifies him as your ace. He's the guy that I
think you trust right now the most to get a stop start, like where you're in a losing streak.
You need someone to go six plus innings and just dominate a really good lineup. I think I trust
Brian Wood the most right now. I wouldn't disagree with you, especially now that, you know, it maybe
he seems like an obvious point with Logan Gilbert and George Kirby unavailable.
Yeah.
But even with those guys available, all due respect to those guys, the way Wu has pitched.
And look, it's worth pointing out, he wasn't great in his last start against Oakland,
aka Sacramento, AKA Las Vegas, AKA Modesto.
I don't know where the hell they're moving.
They still, the way he's pitched for the overwhelming majority of the year,
he's the guy I most relied to give me six innings of two-run baseball.
Now, Logan Gilbert might be the guy I'm most, if I need seven innings and 10 strikeouts,
that's probably the guy I want to go to.
But there's just a good a chance right now the way Logan Gilbert is pitched and coming
off the injured list that you're going to get five innings of seven or seven run baseball.
Absolutely not.
He's not Emerson Hancock, five innings seven strikeout, which, you know, it's still good.
But I trust Brian Wu as much, if not more than any starting pitcher on the staff.
And that is not a darning with faint praise whatsoever.
there are very good starting pitchers on the Seattle Mariners,
but Brian Wu right now is the one I trust the most.
Yeah, and it wasn't just him.
You got Brian Wu, Gabe Spire in the seventh inning to clean it up.
Matt Rash after him looked excellent, probably the best he's looked in a long time,
obviously coming off the injury.
I still think Andres Munoz did what he needed to do,
made the pitches he needed to make a pretty bad missed strike call
before the check swing, grounder to first base.
Obviously, he's still, by the way, anyone who isn't keeping up,
even though they did score the run.
It is counted as a blown save,
but he keeps his 0.00 ERA
because of the error charge to Dylan Moore.
That was a terrible throw.
Oh, my gosh.
Get to that in a second.
But then Carlos Vargas in 10th and Casey Legamina in the 11th,
the guys that you don't expect to necessarily put up zeros
with the guys starting on second base,
just an overall pitching masterpiece by the Mariners today.
So good.
So good against such a good lineup.
Like, you know, they're not the 27 Yankees and obviously, you know, not having Giancarlo's stanton
hurts their lineup depth a little bit.
But you dominated.
Like there were so few scoring chances and the few scoring chances they had, they put them away.
The job Gabe Spire did was second and third and one out to be able to get out of that
with that big punchout was, and look, I got to be honest with you, I questioned the decision
to remove Brian Wu from that game.
I was going to ask you about that, yes.
It is not my favorite decision that Dan Wilson made.
If I'm being honest, there's quite a few decisions in this game that weren't my favorite decisions that were made by Dan Wilson.
But, man, just as such a good job from that bullpen.
I talked about Casey Legamina yesterday as my unsung guy.
And it's going to be tough to do an unsung guy for this one, to be honest with you.
Yeah, there's a lot of them.
Like a hero.
But he's just been so good outside of one blip against Boston.
He has looked like a high leverage reliever.
Like, it's been so fun.
And look, I still hate the Aohenio Suarez trade more than probably any trade the Mariners have made in a long time.
But Carlos Vargas has at least made me only kind of miss A.ohenios Juarez, you know, only a smid as much as I used to anyway.
Just a terrific job from the bullpen.
And Andres Munoz pitched really well.
Just an awful play by Dylan Moore.
And I hate to be too negative.
That whole gold glove thing still cracks me up because it's silly.
It's really silly.
And look, Dylan Moore has been an important part of the Mariners success this year.
The job he's done hitting at the top of the lineup against lefties, he's not a good
defensive player.
He makes some nice plays because he's a really good athlete.
He's not a very good defensive player.
And it almost really killed them today.
But thankfully, thankfully, it did not.
Yeah.
And I think we should like kind of decipher the difference between, you know, him not being
an elite defensive player at any of those positions.
Right.
That doesn't mean he doesn't bring value to the defensive side of the ball because he can play so many positions.
Jackapult trade master of none.
Exactly.
He's the exact type of player that's not good enough at any one position, but can play almost all of them adequately.
So you don't feel terrible about him going into that spot.
It should have been over in the bottom of the ninth.
We should have been, you know, going home after that point.
But thankfully, it doesn't come back to bite the Mariners.
day get the job done in the 11th inning.
Let's talk about, let's start at the first inning.
You mentioned this earlier with Julio Rodriguez.
Oh, my gosh.
Just an insane catch on just a blistered ball by Aaron Judge.
We talked about a little bit with his defensive struggle yesterday, not struggles,
just like, the misjumped, mistimed run on the Trent Grisham fly ball, maybe
gifting him a home run.
Yes.
You know, everyone's going to talk about how, you know, he's the superstar.
He needs to make that play.
And he would say the same thing.
Yeah.
He made up for it today because that was a crazy catch that could have turned into a disaster first inning for Ryan.
No question about it.
Like that really, sometimes I think people use set the tone a little too much.
But the difference there of a double that really maybe if that ball bounces weird,
could have even been a triple with Julio making that bounce in Randy Rose Arena,
not running very well.
That easily could have been three bases for him,
but no, because Julio Rodriguez is the best center fielder in baseball.
I was going to say that myself.
Yeah, he is the best defensive player at the outfield position right now in baseball.
And that is very high praise because there's some really good ones out there.
But Julio's athleticism is a major reason why they win this game,
because we'll talk about it more.
But his athleticism of being able to score on that play
from Big Dumber, and I know we'll get into it in a second.
Yep.
There's a handful of players that can do that at most.
Handful of players, and hits a ball very hard up the middle to get on base in the first
place.
That's just special stuff.
You cannot teach that stuff.
We get frustrated with some of the strikeouts.
We get frustrated with the chase rate.
We get frustrated with the whiffs, even though they have been way down in May, and that's
been awesome to see.
But he's still a special player.
He is a special baseball player, and I wish more Seattle Mariner fans of
appreciated him. I understand constructive criticism. I think we go way past constructive criticism sometimes
with Julio Rodriguez. And tonight, he almost single-handedly, Brian Wu's there. There's some other guys
who are heroes too. But without those two plays, without that diving catch and without that play
of scoring from first base on a ball that very few players do, they don't win this game.
Yeah. And I think you mentioned this right before we went live, but you think because he didn't
have to slide that, you know, oh, he beat it by a mile. It was actually the smart decision not to
slide there because it slows him down and then it can get the tag in for, what was it,
Austin Wells playing catcher at that point. So, I mean, yeah, take us through why that's such
a special play from him, not just the single to get on base, but the way he had to wait to see
if Grisham would catch the ball in center field and then just the special athletic ability to get
all the way home from that. It's just you cannot teach it whatsoever. Like,
that is just pure speed and pure baseball instinct as well, because the ability to wait there, too,
you know, because if Trent Grisham makes that play, he gets back to first base and you're maybe
hoping that he can steal a base. I'd love to see who you'll run more, by the way. Just, you know,
I get that they're taking things a little cautious with him, but I'd love to see more stolen base attempts.
Just the ability to get through and the smartness, too, to keep running through home plate.
because a slide there, maybe he doesn't make it.
Because no matter what anybody tells you,
no matter what Tom Amansky video you're watching
that is telling you otherwise,
it is not faster to slide.
You slide to avoid a tag.
You run to beat a throw.
And he ran through that play,
showing off that upper echelon speed.
You just can't teach it.
It just is not able to be taught.
And that's going to be there for a very long time.
And we should really be appreciative of it.
completely agree with you. Before we get to extra innings and kind of the two ways to go about
extra innings, which the Mariners showcased, I want to point out really quick that even though
they just scored one run and it seemed like, oh, they may have gotten dominated besides that
one inning where Julio did score, which we're just talking about. I actually think they did a really
good job against Max Fried tonight, working a lot of counts, getting him out after the fifth inning.
for someone who has just above a one ERA, that is an excellent.
And for a team that struggles against left-handed pitching, especially this year,
I think they did a really good job getting him out of the game and getting into the Yankees
bullpen, which could prove as a big thing for tomorrow.
Absolutely.
It was very big to make them use their relievers.
And awesome to see Max Freight only last those five innings.
And you have to give a ton of credit to two at-bats in particular, one by Ben Williamson
and won by Donovan Solano, who they don't get hits,
and I get everyone's frustration.
If it was my decision, Donovan Salano would not play for the Seattle Mariners
after, well, a couple of weeks ago, to be honest with you.
But that was a huge at bat that made him throw.
I believe 10 pitches, it was massive to get Max Freed out of that game,
not just because you've got him out of the game,
but you make these guys use those relievers before a matinee game tomorrow.
A lot of those guys are just not going to be available tomorrow,
and they've got a pitcher in Warren who is beatable.
He threw seven and a third innings of good baseball on his last one.
But I feel very confident in them getting there.
Ben Williamson had a terrific baseball game today.
Two terrific at bats, that liner.
Anders and I were kind of debating whether or not they should have sent Tavares on that play.
On second look, the outfield was playing pretty darn shallow,
so I kind of get it.
Playing it safe with the top of the lineup coming up there.
I still think he probably could have beaten.
that throw, but just a terrific job by him. And what a great redemption for an awful series from
J.P. Crawford. Yeah, absolutely. And I think it's worth noting that there was zero outs at that point, too.
So I think you're saving yourself at least one more or two more opportunities to score without
getting a hit. So I understand the not sending Tavares at that point a little bit more on
retrospect. But let's talk about the extra innings. Let's start with the 10th.
we all know what happened in the ninth inning.
Andres Munoz comes in, gets a couple unfortunate plays go his way, the hit batter,
and then the throwaway by Dylan Moore needs to make that play.
We all know that.
But then the Mariners get the job done in the top half of the 10th with, I believe that's
Carlos Vargas, if that's correct, no run score with the runner starting on second base.
The Mariners try pinch hitting.
I believe it was Miles Master Boni coming in and try a sacrifice.
Fice Bunt to send Mitch Garver to third base.
We all, we talked about it yesterday.
I'm not a bunting fan.
And this kind of showcases exactly why.
Because right after that, I think who was the first out in that one?
Was it Rowdy Teles?
Routy Teles.
Yeah.
Flyed out to center, not deep enough.
Not even close to deep enough, no.
To send Mitch Garver, not a fast runner.
And then Leone Tavares comes out and grounds out.
So take us through the 10th inning.
Is that what you would have?
done. Yeah, I just got to swing the bat. It just does it. They're not as good as this offense
has been for a lot of this season. They are not a good enough offense to give up outs. They're just not.
And look, the situational hitting has been pretty decent this year for the most part. But those are
just guys that you can't rely on to drive in those runs against really good pitchers too. Like
Devin Williams in that case. Yeah. You're hoping. And Devin Williams, boy, you talk about a guy who was due
for some success and looked really good in this one as well.
When he throw strikes, he's as good as any reliever.
Yeah, I didn't love that bun decision.
And I loved the decision not to bun the 11th inning.
Yeah.
And I just want to go a little bit deeper into that because when you say give-up outs,
I think most people think if you're an offense that struggles to score runs,
especially in situational hitting areas,
I think the logical thing would be, okay, let's move the runner over.
That's easier to do than to try and just.
swing away three times.
Explain why statistically that isn't necessarily the case.
Hey, Anders, why don't we talk about FanDuel and then we'll talk about that.
Okay, yeah, that's a great idea.
Hold on just a second here.
Sure.
Well, the NBA playoffs are in full swing and every night delivers highlight-worthy performances,
major momentum shifts, and can't miss moments, unfortunately.
Wish I could have missed the Thunder winning game five tonight over the Nuggets.
Yikes. Whether it's a game-winning shot or a breakout player, there's never been a better time to get in on the action.
Fan duel makes it easy to stay in the game before tip off and live with player props, performance trends, and same game parlies.
Fans have more ways than ever to play smart and win big. I'll tell you what, Anders, whatever Nicola Yokic's points above, I'm betting the house on.
Because Nicole Yokic is going to take at least 35 shots in this next game.
He was so good tonight.
It's just a shame that those demons were able to win that game.
You know what else I'm betting on?
I'm betting on the over for the goals for the Florida Panthers against the Toronto Maple Leaf.
That's just a little shout out to one of our buddies who might be rooting for the other team.
Mr. Ian Furness, if you're listening, I am so sorry.
But go Panthers and go Fanduel, the best way to make all of your bets.
If you're new to Fandul, it's the perfect time to sign up.
head to fanduil.com and place your first $5 bet.
And if it wins, you'll get $200 in bonus bets.
Make sure to make every moment more with Fandul,
the official sports betting partner of the NBA.
So we were talking just a second about the two different approaches in the 10th and 11th inning.
Right.
The 10th inning, they tried to do the sacrifice button, move the guy over,
maybe get a sack fly situation to go there, didn't go their way.
And then the 11th inning, they just decided to swing away with Ben Williamson, gets a good knock.
Who was on second at that point?
Riodi Tavar.
It was because he ended the 10th.
That's correct.
And then JP comes up with a big hit with nobody out just to put the ball in play.
So as I was saying before, explain to us why I think most people think if you're a team that struggles to score runs,
and I think this game is an example of that.
Mariners only scoring one run for 10 innings.
Right.
You would think that just putting the ball in play and sacrificing a guy over to get in a better scoring position, I think naturally that's what people think would be the easier thing to do and the better chance of scoring runs.
But explain to our listeners here if they're possibly new to this, why this isn't the case.
Sure.
So the difference is that pitching is so much better than it used to be.
And it is so much more difficult for situational hitting because of pitcher's ability to locate where they want to locate.
and the fact that there is so much data now on where guys are going to hit the baseball,
even with the limiting of the shift.
And boy, is it limiting the limiting of the shift?
We still see plenty of it.
Yeah.
It's just way too hard to have success that way.
Let your guys swing the bat.
And the reason why I really like the decision to let Williamson swing away there is,
yes, J.P. Crawford was abhorrent coming into this, to that at bat.
He was 0.4 8 with six strikeouts in the first two games.
So talk about a guy who's due.
But he has also been super good for you lately.
Give him a chance to swing the bat.
Give Julio a chance to swing the bat.
If one of those guys gets on,
you have big dumpers swinging the bat, right?
One of those guys should be able to get the job done.
I understand it a little more with the bottom of the order
when you're not super confident and even Rowdy to Les Pinch hitting there.
And he obviously doesn't get the job done.
Tavares is not a great offensive player.
Ben Williamson, even with the hit, not a great offensive player,
even though I thought,
he had a terrific game today, both defensively and some really good at bats.
Not always the great results.
I just think Ben Williamson is such an important part of the Mariners success.
Like his job, I don't think people realized how bad Jorge Polanco really was defensively as well.
Because it's easy to forget because of how good he's been with the bat.
And it's been a while since he's played defense.
But let those big guys swing the bat.
Let them be the reason you either win or lose this game.
Not a sacrifice bunt.
and letting the Yankees play the infield in and manipulating the defense against J.P. Crawford to make it difficult.
No, you've got to play him straight away now because of first and third.
So you want that double play chance except a double play is going to allow the run to score.
So you're not playing two in there.
You're hoping for a hard ground ball that can go four, six, three real quick.
That's massive.
Let those guys do what they do best.
And that's what Dan Wilson did today.
Some really questionable decisions from Wilson, I think, over these first 40 plus games.
but some really good ones as well.
And the best one I think so far, at least in the last six games or so,
not to be too hyperbolic, was letting Ben Williamson swing the bat.
Yeah, and I think it sounds like that might be your unsung hero.
So let's move over into the unsung hero segment of the day.
For those of you who are new to our stream here,
the Mariners Postcast here on the Lockdown Sports Network,
every single Mariners game will be live right after the final pitch.
Myself Anderson Hurst and Christopher Crawford here.
I will break down the game that you guys just watched.
You guys can catch Colby and Ty on the Lockdown Mariners podcast tomorrow.
Don't worry, you'll still get your daily content from them.
We're just here to break down the game.
You guys just watched.
But who's your unsung hero from today's game?
You know, it's so weird to call him unsung, but I got to go with Matt Brash.
I'm going with your leader back to back.
To be able to dominate Aaron Judge the way he did, the best offensive player in baseball,
and it's not even close right now.
All due respect to show Hey, Otani.
All due respect to some really good players.
He made Aaron Judge look like Aaron Gordon was swinging the bat.
And I think they may have switched slices for just a second because they look really similar.
Oh, they are a carbon copy of each other.
It could have been anybody.
It could have been Jeff Gordon swinging the bat there.
They had no shot against those sliders.
That's the best I've seen Matt Brash fish in a long time now.
Part of that is because we didn't get to see him at all last year, right?
But just the slider was so good.
The fastball command was actually pretty solid today, too.
Like the hit that Trent Grisham had, that was 97 on the black with movement.
He just, Trent Grishman is just on one, as the kids used to say anyway.
But Aaron Judge is a offensive force.
And Matt Brash made him look atrocious in that at bat with those sliders.
It's easy to forget because of everything else that happens in that game.
And I questioned the decision to go to Matt Brash there.
I kind of thought Moundre Munoz might make more sense.
in that situation. You want your best
pitcher facing Aaron Judge in that
situation. It's nice to have your
closer. What if your closure isn't
going to be necessary because of something Aaron
Judge does? But Matt Brash said,
shut the heck up, Chris Crawford. I have
got this and he just dominated him.
Yeah, I'm going to go with another pitching performance and I'm going to kind of
cheat a little bit. But we talk
about the two approaches offensively in the
extra innings. I'm going to go with the two pitchers
that we used in the extra innings. Carlos
Vargas and Casey Legamina, two guys.
that you don't expect to be higher leverage guys and come through in big moments.
Like I said, pitching in extra innings is not easy.
Starting with a guy in scoring position means you're starting from the stretch.
You're already one hit can score a run.
And to get two innings, and looking good, by the way, I think it was just one walk,
was only guy got on base.
I think it was Carlos Vargas did in the 10th inning.
We just got a walk.
But other than that, everything else looked excellent from those two guys.
guys. We can add a little bit more higher leverage depth. If those guys can be good options that
you can use in the sixth, seventh, eighth, and like we saw today, extra innings, that'll be
huge for the Mariners going forward. So I go with the extra inning. Oh, I think we lost Anders.
We lost Anders, but that's okay. He was just going to say nice things about me anyway,
and we'll go ahead and add him back to the stream. That's okay. That's okay. You don't,
what? It's our spring training, but we don't get a spring training, Andrew. Like, we just,
we only did 37 practice shows. And so those 37 practice shows clearly, it's probably more than
the spring training does. Real quick, I just want to give the flowers to, I want to give flowers to
two people. Number one, Randy Rose Arena has his on base streak and tonight. Congratulations, though,
for having just one of the most impressive on base streaks that we have seen in a long time.
34 straight games getting on base. He did not have his best game whatsoever.
tonight, but he would do for one of those bad games. And I also want to give a shout out to
everybody who's come and watch these first two, man. Like, I, um, I get emotional thinking about
how hard it was for me to stop doing what I was doing and how appreciated I am of Anders and
everybody at Lockdown giving me the chance to do this because it was really hard. But like,
seeing in the comments, so many people who have been commenting on Maya Y for oh so long and coming over
to watch has just meant the absolute world to me. And, you know, we've got some irons to kink out.
There's no question about it. I appreciate all the feedback we've received from people.
Most of it, very positive, but with some constructive criticism, we love constructive criticism.
Yes, we do. We want to make this the very best show that we can. We are just super appreciative
of everybody who has come out, given this show a chance. And thank you to Ty and Colby as well.
More Ty than Kobe. It seems like Kobe just may not like us all that much.
We take some getting used to.
It's all right.
You know, he's that grumpy uncle right now.
And that's okay.
We will, he ends up, I've seen the movies.
He ends up like saving us from drowning or something like that.
I find out that he has really tough war stories that he'll tell us.
But we just really appreciate all of the support.
Yeah.
I share those sentiments 100%.
Sorry, I cut out there.
Well, he's good about my underrated performance there.
Totally, totally, totally agree.
Huge thank you to all you have come to now.
