way. This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Yes, Chris, I did see that Brad Marchand thing, by the way.
He said me. So thank you for saying that right before we go live.
I loved it.
I loved it almost as much as I love the Seattle Mariner game, Anderson Hurst.
Yeah, what a game, huh?
Anderson Hurst here, Christopher Crawford,
left this is your mariner's postcast thanks for hanging with us during the day uh three straight day
games there in chicago uh wiggily field overrated ballpark i stand by it with chris proffer
but underrated mariner performance huh how about that one uh herbie struggles but the offense man
i i get that the wind was blowing a little bit but uh cow raleigh's MVP is still is still there for the
taking for my opinion i i still think it's there's a possibility that it might happen if he continues
to do what he's doing now but the big story i think of the game is is the kind of the veterans that
stepped up today you got uh and i this is kind of weird starting off with unsung hero but i think
it's kind of where we need to go today to start off this episode because you could go with donovan
salano having a three hit day including an rbi i and playing some excellent defense at first you could
go mitch garver getting two home runs his first two home runs his first two home
runs that were not off a pitcher this year to get his total for his career up to 100 and two big
moments as well. And then Luke Rayleigh, welcome back. Pinch hit double to kind of get things going
and a good dive and catch defensively. God, it feels good to get contributions from guys that you
may not expect it. This was a lot of fun. And it was, you know, the final score ends up being
nine to four. I think that's extremely misleading. This was a really good baseball game, a really good
baseball game between a team that could be good in the Seattle Mariners and a team that I just think
is flat out good in the Chicago Cubs. I think the Chicago Cubs are a flawed team and I would expect
them to make some roster moves, you know, during the summer to make it that this is a World Series
contending team, tough to do in the National League for sure. But this was a really good baseball game.
There were some struggles from some guys, too, that we can talk about, number one, the starting
pitcher, but I think the bounce back from Kirby after the first inning was really impressive.
Getting the contributions that you get from Garver and Solano today cannot be overstated.
It just flat out cannot be, because I'll be honest with you, and we'll talk about it.
When I saw Garver up to bat, when it was four to two off of Ryan Presley, I screamed,
why why and then I remembered oh I know why because they'd lose their DH because they have to move Cal
and I just I'm just so happy for him I'm happy for him because and I'm happy for both Solano and
Garver because these are good dudes and good dudes doesn't mean that you should be on a major
league baseball team we saw a good dude get designated for assignment today but it's awesome to see
when those guys are rewarded and it's awesome to see
when those guys are maybe not the reason that you win,
but a focal point of the victory,
an absolute focal point of that win.
This is, in our time doing this,
this is my favorite win of the year by far.
Really? Okay. Wow.
Garver was DH, by the way.
So you could easily pinch it for him and not lose your DH,
just so you know.
Yeah, that's true.
That's true.
But if there's an injury to go to rally,
then you're, well, you know what?
And far from home,
just not a and it's something that I hope Ty and Colby if they haven't talked about it yet and they do a great job but like I'd love to hear their thoughts about adding a third catcher to this roster so that you can start making more roster moves right so you can or it's not roster moves but like in game decisions right somebody who can just handle catcher like not a emergency situation guy a guy who actually has the ability to be behind the play and maybe play the corner infield and some quarter outfield spots too those are rare
one of them could be Harry Ford, but we'll see.
I was going to say, if only you had a guy in AAA, it's one of your top prospects that's
hitting really well.
Yeah.
I just, that would be so perfect, wouldn't it?
It certainly would, but I, it's a tough one.
It is a tougher one than I think people give it credit for.
But just seeing those guys swing the bat that the way they did, Kirby battling, Matt Brash
battling, not using your closer again.
And there's just so much to talk about from this one.
But the overall experience, it looked like it was going to be an ugly one.
And I think we can just kind of start with the starter, right?
Yep, let's start with the start.
That first inning from George Kirby was awful, awful, awful.
And I thought he was going to get away with it.
So Mariners get one in the first, right, from a guy that we might talk a little bit more about.
He likes big dumps.
He does.
He does.
He's got dumps like a truck, truck, truck for sure.
immediately Ian Hap hits that home run.
Then he gives up two hard hit balls.
I thought Julio caught that ball, actually, at first in the gap.
But it was a nice play.
And credit to say,
a Suzuki, one of the more underrated players in baseball,
he gets that double at second and third.
And then he does a really nice job getting those next two outs.
And I was like, okay, he's avoided it.
And then Michael Bush does a fantastic piece of hitting
and dumps that ball into left-
beat for those two runs.
He's a good player.
Cubs have a very good lineup.
It's a very fun team to watch when they're not playing the Seattle Mariners anyway.
But after that first inning, I thought Kirby settled down very nicely.
And the command looked so much better.
He ends up giving up that homer.
So a what could have been a quality start ends up turning into a pretty middling one in terms of the results.
But I don't think you can completely ignore how much better he looked from innings two through five, right?
Like this could have been an easy disaster start for George Kirby.
At the very least, he kept them in the game.
And he allowed that offense to work back.
It's not George Kirby at his finest whatsoever.
This was, in my personal opinion, a step back from those previous two.
Obviously, it's a step back from the 14th strikeout effort, you know, obvious point is obvious.
But this wasn't even as good as last timeout, five innings of two-run baseball.
But I will give them credit for battling and keeping Seattle in the game through it because it was
clear that George Kirby didn't have his best command today.
Another knock on the George Kirby starter, I guess observation is that it was once again,
it's Cal Raleigh catching him today.
I'm going to keep bringing this up until I noticed a difference in the trend.
Unless he just absolutely deals with Cal Raleigh behind the plate, or he gets Mitch Garver
and he still ends up struggling a little bit, I'm just going to point it out.
I mean, he's only had one start with Mitch Garver this year.
But that happens to be his best one by a large margin.
And I looked at the splits last year with cow catching versus Mitch catching.
It wasn't astronomically different, but it's almost a whole run in ERA.
So I don't know if there's something there.
I'm going to keep looking out for that, especially because today you went up against the left-hand
of pitcher.
So you could easily have justified catching Mitch Garver and B.H.
and Cal Roll.
Yeah.
And I will say this.
number one, the way Kirby looked,
Mitch Hanigur could have been catching it.
It wouldn't have mattered in the first inning.
So I don't think it was that.
But the other thing I will say is if George Kirby wanted Mitch Garver behind the plate,
Mitch Garver would be behind the plate.
So this might be a situation where maybe you give it one more,
one more start with him behind the plate,
and you say, hey, if this doesn't.
doesn't go well, let's go back to what really worked in 2025 because, or excuse me,
2024, because Kirby was struggling before that move. And it kind of awoken some stuff. And then,
you know, Kirby made some really good starts with big dumper behind the players as well.
Afterwards. Yeah, yeah. So maybe you think about that. Maybe you think about having just those two
work together. I, it's a really hard thing for me to say because I don't think there's anything
with pitch sequencing that I see that's different. I don't see. I don't see.
anything in terms of the, why am I not thinking of the term, the target that is being
getting into Kirby?
Yeah, I don't see any difference there.
But maybe it's just a comfort thing.
Maybe it's just George Kirby likes seeing that guy behind the plates and I don't know.
It's a really weird one.
And the way Garver hit today makes it easier to justify him being in the lineup as well.
By the way, well, we'll get into it.
You have to give us that stat for Mitch Garber and his homers.
today that is pretty bonkers.
But ultimately, I do think Kirby was more helper than hurt her today.
Interesting.
So just because of what he did through those innings and keeping them in that game.
But at the same time, it's something you have to look at.
You do have to look at the fact that the numbers have been substantially better with
Garver behind the plate than Kirby.
George Kirby should not be catching, by the way.
Yeah, I'm with you there.
Let's give our sponsors today a little love.
And then we'll have a fun conversation about Unsung Hero because I really want to talk about it.
We'll obviously talk about Cal's Big Day as well.
He ends up, I don't know, breaking two records, not records, just he's setting the pace at an extremely high level than we've ever seen before.
But first, Chris Crawford, I want to talk to you about wonderful pistachios.
I want to talk to you about it.
I think everyone wants to talk about wonderful pistachios, to be honest.
Because if you're looking for a snack that's both delicious and nutritious,
cracked into a good source of protein with wonderful pistachios.
Wonderful pistachios is one of the highest protein nuts.
Each one out serving has six grams of protein,
giving you over 10% of your daily value.
Plus, they're packed with fiber and better for you on saturated fats
to keep you feeling fuller longer.
So all of that is true, Anders.
For me, there's something satisfying, like watching a close game like today,
having something to crunch on, having a nice snack to crunch on so that you kind of feel like
you're out of control, but maybe in control of your snack.
I love Wonderful's Pistachios because I get that crunch and they taste awfully darn good too.
Get snacking and get cracking with a snack that packs a protein punch.

the NBA. All right. Well, yeah, please, please. We're going to chat for a couple minutes here
about Cal Raleigh, just because I don't know, I'm going to struggle to find something more to say
about him than we've already said, but he's just having an absolutely historic year so far in
2025. And then we're going to have a fun conversation about Unsung Hero because there's a lot
of options today. Comment in who you guys think, whether it's a moment in the game, whether it's a
player that, you know, you got contributions from that you weren't expecting.
We'll talk about that here in a couple of minutes.
But it's big dumper. Big dumpers, the guy that kind of sets the table.
It takes the two-run, home run, or takes the lead with the two-run home run in the top of
the seventh inning after the Mitch Garver game tying home run in the top of the sixth inning.
It's just great to see Cal being on this much of a heater right now.
It looks like he can just barrel anything up in the strike zone.
The improvement that he has shown as a right-handed batter in particular is probably the most understated thing or underrated thing about Big Dumber season because he was really solid with the left-handed bat last year.
With the right-handed bat, it was a little bit shaky.
It was a little bit of a, well, this is the time to get the day off, you know, type of thing.
And most switch hitters are like that.
They all have a side that they're better from.
Like even you think about a guy like Chipper Jones who is one of the most, he had a better side.
everybody has a better side. But the fact that Big Dumber has been a well above
average bat with his right-handed swing, it can't be overstated. And it was such a big moment
to hit that home run, to give them that lead, to make sure that Garvers to run Homer didn't get
wasted. I will say this. And, you know, people get tired of me praising Julio. Let's not forget
that Julio lines the single with two outs before Big Dumper gets that hit because it was two outs.
It was a four four game and the offense did not look good.
Outside of Garber, we were kind of talking about outside of Garver and Solano and Rally,
nobody's getting anything done kind of in our group chat.
Yeah.
But he lines that single to the opposite field and gives Big Dumber the chance to bat there
and getting the chance to bat there with a runner on.
Big Dumber should be the MVP of baseball.
If we took it literal, then big dumpers should be the literal MVP of baseball.
Because as I've said, billions of times, the Mariners are nothing without Cal Raleigh.
The Yankees probably still win their division.
So if you go by literal definition, that's not how we do it.
That's never going to be how we do it.
But if you went by literal definition, there is no more valuable player in all of baseball
sans Shohay Otani than Cal Rale.
There just isn't.
But I did want to quickly mention Julio just because this was the most encouraging offensive game he's had in a long time.
Even while going one for four, drove the baseball, hit the ball in the air a couple of times.
When's the last time we saw him hit the ball with any authority in the air whatsoever?
So getting, and I believe there were three balls that he hit above 105 miles per hour today,
that's super encouraging.
It's not the reason that they won, but it's nice to see that he has.
had a quality offensive day, even if the hits didn't drop as well.
But big dumper, man.
Like, that's just, that's just such a special baseball player right now.
And boy, I'm so excited that I get to watch him play for a very long time.
Yeah, he's a mariner for the next six years, but that's fun.
With Julio really quick, I'm just going to mention he's still not pulling it.
So that's going to be the next step for him.
Yeah, I mean, the center field is not technically pulling, but that's fine to me, right?
Right. Like if you're hitting the ball into the center field gap, yeah, but what you're saying about pulling the ball to left field is absolutely true too.
Yeah. But I will take driving the ball to center field as well. A couple of balls today that were into the outfield that had a batting average expected above 600.
Maybe it's a little bit beggars, can't be choosers in that situation. But it's great to see hard contact.
Yeah. And that's just another example of that hit you're talking about. I think it's another example of why he should be batting lead off.
Like I think he's just so much better when there's no one on base and he's the guy to start things.
I'm going to say it a bunch.
Then the guy to puts too much pressure on himself, I think, to be the guy to hit people in when it's a clutch situation.
So I just think it's so much more conducive to his play style, especially right now where he's kind of a singles merchant in that aspect.
Right.
So then he can, you know, make havoc on the base paths with his speed as well.
So I'm interested to see how that plays out.
I'm fine with him at the two hole right now.
but, you know, J.P. continues to be hot, then you kind of have to keep them in that spot, which I think is.
Real, real, real quick.
Yeah.
Great to see the Mariners scored nine runs in a game where J.P. Crawford was awful.
Yep.
J.P. Cros. Cod had a horrible game. Did he ever have a liner? Oh, boy, did he ever have a liner that had almost murdered Matthew Boyd.
And if we were a Cubs channel, we'd probably be spending the next hour talking about why you pull Matthew Boyd from that start because he was, you know, there was a lot of hard contact.
but like the result was getting people out.
That's probably the best catch I've ever seen from a pitcher.
Because if you watch the replay, it's not the baseball catching him.
He actually catches that baseball, like makes the play squeezes that glove.
That is some of the best reaction time.
And one of, I thought Aaron Goldsmith's call was absolutely perfect.
Like the what was absolutely phenomenal.
But having a game like that.
this where the guy who has carried you offensively, all due respect to Big Dumper,
there were some struggles in the earlier portion of June, right?
Big Dumber was, or excuse me, J.P. Crawford kind of was that offense to score that many
runs without him getting on base is pretty big.
Yeah, I agree with you there.
Only three players don't get on base today, and it's J.P. Crawford, Ben Williamson,
and Cole Young. Oh, sorry, one more. My favorite player.
Dylan Moore.
I forgot he played today.
Because Luke Rayleigh comes in for him.
And let's move to Unsung Hero now because there's a lot of options.
There's a lot of options.
I'm just going to go through the ones that pop up in my head.
Number one, Luke Rayleigh, welcome back.
I know you DFA, Rowdy to Les now.
I was a little questionable about that decision because I think I like Rayleigh better
in right field.
And he showed that today with a nice diving catch.
Man, it's different with him out there than Dominic Panzone.
Sure.
He also pinch hits and hits a double for Dylan Moore.
Please don't play Dylan.
I'm just going to say that.
But, you know, it's just good to have him back in the lineup.
Then you got someone like Mitch Garver, a pretty obvious one, two home run day for him,
including the game tying home run in the sixth inning.
He gets his total up to 100 in his career, which is good.
It's his first two home runs that aren't off a pitcher this year and his first home run
since which date, Chris Crawford?
April 26th.
Oh my God.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And the drubbing against the Miami Marlins.
You could also say Donovan Solano.
Dude was great today.
Three hits, two of them against a right-handed pitcher.
And some excellent defense involved there as well.
You forget he also had the second RBI in the fourth inning, I believe it was,
to drive in and cut the lead to three-two for Chicago,
kept him in the game a little bit.
in a big spot. So there's a lot of good options out there. You could say Eduardo Bizarro
look good today. Gabe Spire comes in and cleans up and gets Kyle Tucker out in a big spot,
which could have turned into something totally different. Even like Amina in the ninth thing,
when you don't have to go to Munoz, he looks pretty solid, getting the double play when he
absolutely needed to. Out of all those, is there anyone I missed? Yep. And that's why he's going to be
my unsung hero. So I'm going to take the literal definition of it, kind of like we were talking about
with big dumper, the literal definition of most valuable player.
We didn't talk about Randy Rosarina.
Oh, yeah.
Three for five with a couple of runs scored, and it's so nice to see him looking so much
better at the plate lately.
And we've talked about this a bunch too.
We can't help it.
We're literally on here every single Seattle Mariner game, right?
He goes through these things.
That's literally been his reason why he won him on your roster and the reason why he's not
like a MVP candidate is because he has these lulls.
He has these times.
Well, it looks like he's breaking out of that lull.
By the way, I didn't get a chance to talk about it yesterday,
so I'm going to talk about it today.
MLB scorekeepers need to be used.
That's the worst call I've ever seen from a scorekeeper.
For you not, for you to call that a double instead of an air on Jaron DeLant is criminal.
It's criminal.
I'm glad it worked out for a Seattle Mariner.
But he drove that baseball, right?
And you're starting to see him look.
so much more confident at the plate.
I thought he had a really nice game.
Before you mentioned him,
I was literally going to go with whatever player he didn't mention by the play.
Okay, great.
It was there.
I was thinking it was going to be Gabe Spire
because I thought that was probably the biggest out of the game.
Yes, it was.
To get that guy out there.
Gabe Spire is going to get lefties out.
I know he had that one issue against James Wood.
Everyone's going to have, like, it's fun.
Nobody's perfect.
Pobody's perfect.
I was really impressed with what Gabe Spire did there.
And then the rest of Bullpen does fine.
I would say if we were going unsung villain,
if it wasn't Dylan Moore,
we almost had an unsung villain moment for Matt Brash.
That did not look good.
That did not look good whatsoever.
But good for him, becoming a more complete pitcher as we see.
But man, it's tempted to go with Solano as well
because that play to end that inning was spectacular.
All due respect to my big beefy boy,
Routy to Les ain't getting to that baseball.
No chance, man.
And it's not like Donovan Solano as like elite range there.
You don't need to at first base.
No, but it is nice when you can get that play.
And credit to Brash for getting over to first base as quickly as he did.
We saw George Kirby almost make an oopsie daisy earlier in the game where he was a little late.
Very nice job by Brash getting to that baseball.
But gosh, you could go with so many guys.
Ben Williamson made a couple of terrific defensive plays today.
The double play to end the game.
That flip is a really difficult play.
It would be tempting to just cut across and make the easy out at first.
No, he had enough confidence to make that flip.
Everybody today had a good moment.
J.P. Crawford was fine defensively.
Cole Young didn't make any mistakes.
This is just a really complete win.
And outside of the first inning, the Seattle Mariners dominated the Chicago.
Cubs in Chicago.
And they're a good team.
That's not like a no, that's not like, oh, that's a team you should beat.
I think Chicago Cubs is our good baseball team.
If they're in the American League, the Chicago Cubs would be the easy favorite right now
in the American League.
It's not overall.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, they're easily the most complete team.
By the way, seeing Ryan Presley, who Goldsmith brought up, he had like 16 straight appearances
where he hadn't given up a run, but still seeing him work in the sixth inning is crazy.
after seeing him close for some of the best teams in baseball.
It's great to see that they were able to get to him, though.
Yeah, this kind of seems like we talk about, like, formula for Mariners victories.
You don't need all these guys to come up big.
But the fact that you weren't getting very many just standout performances from anyone besides maybe JP and Cal Raleigh
and Julio sprinkled in here and there, that getting like some good spots.
from Randy, from Mitch Garver, from
Johnovan Solano from Luke Rayleigh coming back.
That's going to be huge.
Just having these role players kind of pitch in when they need to
to get wins for the Mariners is going to be so big.
Because big dumpers on a tear.
He is in the MVP conversation for a reason.
And if he continues to do what he's doing,
you can count on that and then just one or two other guys doing something
offensively.
And I was about to go heading into that sixth inning
when the Mariners were down four to two.
I wasn't even going to go to the offense, so to speak.
I was going to go to the pitching staff because that's been what's really disappointing to me for this team in terms of expectations to where they are now.
Sure.
This pitching staff is average at best right now, at least the starters are.
And I really need to see more before I can really feel good about this Mariners team being a playoff slash world series contender.
Yeah, yeah, I think that's totally fair.
Like that, I mean, Jerry DePoto brought it up on MLB Network.
they need their pitching to carry them.
Now, that is a both compliment to the pitching and an insult to the roster that he's
felt, if we're being completely honest.
But he's not wrong.
This pitching staff is going to have to carry the Seattle Mariners.
So if they can do that, and you can get complimentary pieces like Solano, like Mitch Garver,
to perform.
Randy, JP, you know, if they can get the job done, this team has a high ceiling.
It has a very, very high ceiling.
It also has an incredibly low floor because we have seen so many struggles from those guys that we mentioned as well.
But yeah, this was a great win.
A great win gives you a great chance to win the series.
And this would be the best series win for the Seattle Mariners, I think.
All due respect to that sweep against the Padres, I think the Cubs are a better baseball team than the Padres.
And I think that this would be the first time if they can win this series.
And we'll see what happens to next two.
By the way, grandma's really upset about.
the 11 o'clock starts, man. This is ridiculous. She's not a happy camper. She just doesn't have very much
to do at night. She's 95 and she doesn't hit the club nearly as often as she used to.
But if you can get that series win here, oh, you're feeling so much better. So, so, so much better.
And it's so much easier to win a series. Obvious point is obvious when you win that first game.
Yeah. And James, I didn't expect the starters to be as good as last year either,
but it's not just last year that they were good.
It was 22, 23, and 24 that this team proved that they were at least top five starting
rotation in baseball.
They just haven't been this year.
They just haven't been.
Some of that due to injury.
Some of that due to Bryce Miller injury slash regression and some of it due to just some
inconsistent results.
Some inconsistent results outside of Castillo, there just hasn't been a ton of consistency.
I guess Brian Wu belongs.
Castillo have been good. George Kirby hasn't really been great.
Vice Miller hasn't. Yeah. Great to get Gilbert back, obviously. Yeah. Getting Logan back is super
helpful and he looks like he's back, like fully back. But I think George Kirby's kind of the
lynch pen and all that. If he can get back to what we saw like a top five Cy Young voting guy
in 2023, then this, that changes everything for this pitching staff. And that's something that I feel
like we can lean on.
But all right, guys, 1120 once again tomorrow.
I believe who do we got tomorrow?
Emerson, Hancock against Kate Horton.
Kate Horton is one of the better pitching prospects in baseball.
This will be a very interesting test for both him and for the Mariners.
He has really good stuff, a very, very good secondary arsenal that he can throw against Seattle.
First time looking at him, that can obviously be a little tough.
But for me, it's just avoiding the disaster from Hancock.
Like if he can pitch the way he has for the overwhelming majority of the year, you got a real chance of winning this game.
Yep.
Emerson Hancock, he's been good lately.
So hopefully he can continue that against a really good Cubs lineup in a, as we saw today, pretty hitter-friendly ballpark, at least when the wind's blowing out.
That's a, I thought we were going to get actually more runs than we did today.
I did too.
And I remember, like, that was the place where Jared Kellanick hits it like 500 feet.
And I was like, how did that happen in 20?
Whoa, you went Nathan Bishop there, Kellanick.
Wow, man.
I said Kellynick.
I said Kellynick.
I'm going to replay it for you and you're going to be speaking.
All right.
Chat, did I say Kellanick or Kelnick?
Tell me.
Tell me.
All right.
Anyways, moving on.
He doesn't deserve me to get his name right anyway.
All right.
We'll see you guys tomorrow after the final pitch of the Mariners versus the Cubs.
Let's go get the series win tomorrow.
Talk to you guys.
