This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
The Ben Williamson game, hilariously.
And a night that the Mariners kind of needed it, to be honest.
No doubt.
Wow.
Wow, what a win.
On a night where the Astros, Rangers, Yankees, Red Sox.
there's one more team that lost tonight as well.
The Mariners gained ground against almost every other team in the American League
playoff race.
A big win for your Mariners.
La Piedra just was awesome today.
Love to see him kind of round into form at the perfect time throughout the season.
Josh Naylor hits his first Mariner home run.
He has officially arrived.
And the vibes are good.
The vibes are good.
hopefully we get some good vibes only here pretty soon,
but we'll see what ends up happening on that front in the next couple of days.
The Mariners win this one.
I think the score was three to one.
Let me double check.
Yes, it is three to one.
And kind of an all-around effort there with your starting pitching.
Not a great offensive effort.
You look pretty good throughout the first four or five innings against J.P. Sears.
We're working some really good counts.
didn't really do much against their bullpen,
which was a little unfortunate.
But when you pitch the way you did tonight
and you play defense the way you did tonight,
that is a good recipe for success.
This is the mayor's postcast,
Anderson Hurst, Christopher Crawford, right to my left.
We're going to talk about La Piedra, the rock,
and his start tonight.
We're going to talk about Josh Naylor's first home run
as a Seattle Mariner.
We're going to talk about the Ben Williamson game hilariously.
And we'll do our unsung hero slash villain.
Chris Crawford, what is your original thought about the Mariners victory tonight in Sacramento?
Big win, big win.
And, you know, I know you take a look at Oakland, who's 46 and 63.
Oakland, who's Oakland?
Yeah, Oakland, you take a look at Oakland and you take a look at their 46 and 63 record.
Their 20 and 32 record on a neutral field that is Sacramento, because I'm still holding out
hope that they're going to move back to Oakland someday.
I am too, actually.
And, you know, it's not a great baseball team, but it is a sneaky team, right?
And they just are coming off a sweep of the Houston Astros.
And by the way, thank you, A's.
Thank you for that very, very much.
Big time.
And we can thank some other people in a second, too.
I really like this win.
I like this one because you saw a lot of facets of the game look good tonight,
particularly the starting pitching, of course.
But I thought there were good offensive moments.
I thought there were some great defensive moments.
I thought that there were some really good moments from the bullpen, some shaky moments from the bullpen as well.
But I do think that this was a win that you like pass the eye test, right?
Even with a game that you only score three runs, a game where you give up a decent amount of base runners, I think you pass the eye test tonight.
And it's a big start to a, this is a huge week.
This is a huge week for a lot of reasons.
It's a huge week because it's a trade deadline.
But it's also just a huge week because I don't think you can,
overstate how big these four games are coming up against the Rangers. So you need to take care of
business to make those games matter more, right? Like you want to be in control of your destiny. And I
realize how much baseball there is left to be played afterwards and stuff like that. But I want to
see this team start to click more. And there were flashes of brilliance in that series against the
Angels. Like I talked about it on Molly Wat Monday today. It was a weird series because I had fun
watching it, even though the series didn't exactly go the way we wanted.
Tonight was it a good start to the series going the right way, and I had a pretty good time
watching it, too.
Yeah, I'm with you.
And I don't know what it is.
Maybe it's just I'm used to watch in the last couple years of Seattle Mariners baseball.
But I need the starting pitching to be good for me to have any sort of, like, confidence
in this team and their long-term outlook going forward.
And when I see Luis Castillo do what he did tonight in one of the most hitter-friendly environments in Major League Baseball against a lineup that's been pretty hot lately, you just said, they swept the Astros in Houston scoring like 26 runs or something like that.
And he looks as good as he did tonight.
Like that is a big development for me moving forward.
I know the offense, there are still some holes and there are some things to be, I don't know.
want to say concerned about, but places where you can improve for sure.
But when you're starting pitching is that good, that's what this team is built on.
And like, again, it's probably just me being used to the last three years of Mariner
baseball and I need to see that for me to have any sort of like confidence in this team.
But it's just, it's so big for me moving forward.
Let's start with that start.
Luis Castillo, what did you see from him tonight?
He was awesome.
He was so good tonight.
And it wasn't a night where again generates a lot of swing and miss.
he only generates six tonight, which is tied for third.
Elvis Alvarado got as many swings and missing his one inning tonight than Luis Castillo did.
Well, he faced Dylan Moore.
That doesn't count.
Well, that certainly helps right now.
I thought the fastball command was spectacular tonight.
And even we were talking about this in the group chat, Anders.
You guys should be jealous.
We're in a group chat with some famous people, famous adjacent people.
We talked about that even when he was made.
missing, he didn't miss by very much, right? And he had to be perfect tonight because that lineup's
good. That park sucks a lot. That sucks. That's the word. I honestly think Polanco hit a home run.
I'm not going to lie. I still think he hit the home run. It looks fair to me. I'm not like,
swear to God. I have an unsung hero and an unsung villain today. And I'll talk about that in a second.
Well, it might be a few seconds, to be honest with you. But you like you had to have a good fastball tonight.
I believe he threw something 80% of his pitches tonight were fastballs. And, you know,
I thought Angie Metick made a great point that he got his Brian Wu on tonight. He was throwing that
fastball, locating it, generating a ton of weak contact. How many pop-ups did Dylan Moore
catch a shortstop tonight? Like, how many-broken that pop-ups? Yeah. Yeah, just like, you know,
and that's not an insult to Dylan Moore that they were like, they just ball went right to him,
right? And it was great to see because this is a lineup that can give you a lot of trouble.
and in a park that can give you a lot of trouble as well.
This was, and it was so nice to see him bounce back from kind of a shaky start the last time, right?
Like, we have such high expectations for La Piedro that sometimes, you know, but tonight he met up
them and then some.
And I was concerned about this one because the one thing Piedra has struggled with is giving up
the ding-dongs, right?
He's had some issues with keeping the ball in the park.
There really wasn't much tonight that you thought, oh, that might get out, you know, there
was a ball hit into the gap once, you know, off of him, actually two. And you could talk about
your on sung hero making one of those plays in a little bit. But I just thought he was so solid.
Like, that's the rock. That is the rock, right? That is the guy who, and you know what,
kudos to Dan Wilson for giving him the seventh inning. I agree. Right. And not only did they give him
the seventh inning, they didn't have anybody loose for the seventh inning, right? That was his
inning. And, you know, sometimes I've been critical of Dan Wilson for managing to pitch counts
and scores like, oh, well, if he's only thrown this many pitches, he has to get this next
inning. Tonight it was a case of he was super efficient and super good. And not sixth inning got
a little shaky. We'll talk about Ben Williamson just makes a spectacular play tonight. Two
spectacular plays defensively. More like three. It was just such a solid start. And solid seems like
an understatement, right? It was a
not dominant, but you never
felt like Luis Castillo wasn't in
control of this baseball game. It feels
like the anti-Logan Gilbert start
for this year, where it's like
he never looks like he's dominating the lineup,
but he's so efficient
that he can get through seven innings.
And it's like, it's the opposite of Logan
Gilbert. Like he looks like an
ace, one of the best pitchers in baseball
for like the three, four innings.
And then he has an inning that blows up
and he can't get the length because of
one bad ending. And it's, it's, you know, it's two different styles of pitching. I totally get it.
But it's, I love it. I love what I saw from Luis Castillo tonight. I think I'm not getting
ahead of myself here, but I just as how I think of things. I think if the playoffs started now,
he is starting a game for me. Oh, no doubt. For sure. It's him, Brian Lew and probably Gilbert
at this point as your three starting pitchers. So that says a lot for a guy that a lot of people
kind of writing off coming in this year.
And a guy that was rumored to be traded so many times.
And if not for John Stanton, not wanting to open up the pocketbook for a certain player,
and if you know, you know, and if you don't, you don't, I'm not going to go too far into it.
He would be playing in Boston right now.
He would be, La Piedra would be eating some New England clam chowder right now.
But I say, so we took a look at last, we compared it to yesterday, or last start for a
Castillo, right, where he gave up six runs, three.
The big difference here, too, is not only was Castillo good, the defense behind him was fantastic.
And, you know, I love having Benny Williamson be my unsung hero, but you can't do it tonight.
Like, Ben Williamson was massive tonight.
There were two plays made that were as good of plays as I've seen from a third baseman,
not named Cabrion Hayes this year.
And it's funny, I was just taking a look at the, I always forget.
forget the exact name of the website, but the one that has the defensive run saved, right?
Yeah.
Brian Hayes saved 15 runs this year, which is just a spectacular number, just a spectacular number.
He is as good of a third baseman as there has been in a long, long time.
He is Beltrade-esque with the glove, which is-
quick question before you give the stat for Williamson, do you, is there, are there certain
positions where you value like DRS over OAA?
Yes, yes.
It is third base one of those stats.
Third base is one of those because third base could be a tough one to judge range for, right?
Because you're kind of hugging the line a little bit, you know?
And, you know, it can also be one where they take a look at arm strength and you say,
ah, the ball didn't get there.
But a lot of times that ball is bouncing up on purpose.
It's an easier play for the first baseman.
It gives him a better chance to stretch out for that baseball and get it quicker, right?
So I think Ben Williamson is, and by the way, he's second in baseball at like seven.
And I think it went up tonight, folks, because he makes that spectacular diving catch.
And then the play in this, I believe it's the sixth inning to prevent a double and to get that out.
Now, I'm not sure what Sacramento slash Oakland slash Las Vegas is doing and not challenging.
Sacra Vegas, I don't know what they're doing, not challenging that play.
because Horri Polanco's foot was clearly off the bag. Clearly off the bag. I don't know why they didn't
challenge it. But I joked in our group chat, it's just, it's a way to think Ben, or appreciate Ben Williamson
and to say, oh my gosh, what a play. Because that was massive, right? If that ball gets by him, a couple of runs
probably scored, and we're talking about a brand new ball game. Ben Williamson is a fantastic
defensive player. And nice died at the plate. Now, it's funny, too, because
The very first flight appearance for Williamson, he hits into a double play, right? A bad.
In an inning that you kind of needed to get some stuff. Yeah, absolutely. So you're thinking,
oh, no. Now, it was hit hard. And the Mariners hit into a few hard hit double plays tonight, right?
Like, yeah, but routine, routine because they went right to fielders. But it was great to see him
drive that double, drive that double. And then great job by Big Dumper to drive him in as well.
I thought it was a fantastic game. And here's what I'll just ultimately say about Ben Williamson.
If he played for a different baseball team, I would be totally fine with Ben Williamson being my third basement.
Totally fine. And I'm actually okay with him being the third baseman on this team if you get a significant offensive upgrade somewhere else, right?
Because you can't rely on him offensively. He just can't. There's no power. And he is a guy who I think,
we sometimes forget, this guy's very little professional experience. He was a
two thousand, twenty three second round pick who had like, what, 12 games in Tacoma
before he gets the call up? Like, you're asking a lot. It's not an insult to Ben Williamson.
It's an insult to what they thought they had at third base, right? That's the issue.
So if you make that massive upgrade at second base, if you make that up massive upgrade potentially
at shortstop moving somebody to second base, right? Right field, designated hitter, right? If you can do
something along those lines, I'm okay with Ben Williamson being the third basement.
I'm okay with one automatic out. If you have eight good hitters in this lineup,
I'm okay with one automatic out. What I'm not okay with is six pretty good hitters,
two meh hitters, and one automatic out. That I don't think works, even as good as he is defensively.
But Ben Williamson deserves a ton of plotts for coming into a very difficult situation and being
much more helper than herder overall.
Yeah, he said, I honestly, he saved the game today.
I think the Mariners probably lose if they have.
Oh, that's a great call.
A lesser third baseman.
I think that's true.
Defensively.
And this is, again, I'm going to sing the praises of how important defense is,
especially to this team, right, where you're not scoring buttloads of runs
where you can outscore your problems a little bit.
I think he saved you the game.
He saves Castillo in the six.
or seven. But then, especially in the eighth inning, I think the diving stop to end the inning
and touch that third base bag with guys on second and third, that changes the entire game
because they probably tie the game up if he doesn't get to that. So instead of it's still
a free one and you're going to Munoz in the ninth inning. So all right, we're pushing it a little
long here. Let's say hello to our sponsors. We'll come back with a little bit on the offense and
some unsung hero. Sounds great. Today's episode is brought to you by
game day hue and so is this non-existent hat that I am wearing maybe you can take a look at my polo as
well for the cracking uh in terms of you know me and chris both wearing some stuff like that uh and some
other whatever kind of team you follow if you're a seattle sports guy you can do crackin seahawks

this one hits the mark game day hugh makes clean no longer
logo gear, excuse me, with team inspired colorways for every pro and college fan base.
It's all about letting your color speak to you.
No giant logos, just smart, versatile style that works on game day, on the course, or
anywhere in between.
You can wear it to tailgates.
You can wear it to tea times.
If you're just outrunning errands, if you're going to Whole Foods and getting a $17 salad,
you can wear game day hue.
It's that kind of hat that or gear that keeps your team without screaming it.
It's subtle, but it's also good looking, and I think that is a nice distinction from Game Day Hugh and some other folks.
Yeah, I'm a big minimalist guy.
So having something that doesn't have like loud logos everywhere is so key for me, especially because I like to play golf a lot too.
No doubt.

Welcome back into the Mariners Postcast, Anderson Hurst year,
Christopher Crawford right to my left.
Man, Mariners win this one three to one.
take the first to take game one of three to the athletics in Sacramento.
Luis Castillo was excellent, but we got to talk a little bit about the offense.
I got to throw in my boy Josh Naylor.
That home run was a tank.
Lefty, lefty, I might add.
I also just love his like mannerisms.
Not even just on the home run and other stuff too.
There was a play that Castillo made on a ground ball where he kind of flipped it over to
first base and Naylor was like, yeah, let's go.
And he's hyped.
and he's giving him like fist bumps and stuff.
I just love that he's already kind of endearing himself to all the players around him.
And he's kind of that energy burst in the infield that we need and have to look for for a long time.
What do you see from Naylor tonight?
Cal Raleigh, just a nice two-hit RBI day, just really quiet somehow.
And then, of course, Ben Williamson with a big hit as well.
Yeah, you know, I thought it was actually a better offensive day than maybe the score suggests.
some frustration like hitting into the double plays you go just one for six with runners in
scoring position i didn't love big dumper trying to steal that base at that time if i'm being
completely honest but really nice job of hitting there into showing so much that he's so much
more than just a power hitter the power is obviously the calling card but he's so much more
than that i thought it was a solid offensive game i'm going to have a kind of weird unsung hero let me
quickly give my unsung villain. My unsung villain is to whoever decided that foul territory
exists. Because if foul territory didn't exist, I think the Mariners have 32 home runs tonight.
Like every single Seattle Mariner hit a ball that was absolutely cranked, but just went foul.
Who didn't hit that tonight? Ben Williamson, I think it was the only one tonight who didn't have
an almost home run. Even Dylan Moore had one that just went foul.
Dylan Moore is kind of the king of almost home runs. Yes, he does have his share.
because he is just very much a mistake hitter.
Right now it's a mistake to watch Dylan Moore hit.
Here is going to be my weird unsung hero for this one.
I don't feel good about it.
Don't feel good about it.
But my unsung hero offensively is going to be Julio Rodriguez.
And I'll tell you what.
It's an 0 for four game.
It's with two strikeouts.
Julio sees 19 pitches in the first three at bats.
And I think that's actually significant.
because not only did it get J.P. Sears, who has pitched really well against the Seattle Mariners
out of the game quicker, it gave guys a chance to see Sears stuff that day. And that,
the leadoff hitter's ultimate job is to get on base, of course. But another thing that the
lead off hitter wants to do is give the opponents, or your hitters, a chance to see what the
opponent is throwing. And because Julio saw so many pitches tonight, that helped Josh Naler,
that helped Kyle Raleigh, that helped Randy a Rose Arena.
That helped everybody because everybody got to see.
Of course I want to see better results.
There was a pitch today that he should have hit to what's across from Sacramento.
Like he should have hit it into like either the Oakland new state old stadium or he should
have hit it into the Pacific Ocean, right?
Like it should have been one of the two.
But I did like that he saw those pitches.
Like he took that lead off spot and he took it seriously, right?
Not that I'm surprised you would do it.
Julio's shown moments of being a really good leadoff hit.
Both of us would like to see him hit lead off more option.
More often, excuse me.
But I really like that Julio saw so many pitches there because it really helped the offense in the middle
innings, I think.
That's the unsung portion of it, right?
Yeah, sure, the results are the results.
But the fact that he was able to make Sears work and the fact that the Mariners got to see so
much of Sears Arsenal gets him out of the game after four and two-thirds innings and also
give him the chance to hit some baseballs hard tonight. Yeah, I think no one's questioning the team
nature of Julia Rodriguez. He is like all in, I think almost too much to be honest. I think he rides
with how the team is doing. If he had a little more selfishness to be completely honest,
where like, hey, I just need to do my job. I don't need to worry about what other people are doing.
I think he would be a better player. But I, I, I, I,
actually like that he's that selfless.
And he's the guy that's going to take team at bats, work the count, especially when he's
the lead off hitter.
I think that's a good shout for sure.
Now, I don't want to be, you know, hyping up the pitch count every single night.
No, no, it's got to have results.
Right.
But, yes, he has an 0 for four night with two Ks.
If that is still something that he's doing, I can live with that for sure.
And I think the timing's coming back a little bit.
You kind of see it just every now and then it comes back.
I'm waiting for that full, you know, two-week stretch where he's just locked the F in.
Yeah.
All right.
Let's do our unsung.
Let's do it.
You did your unsung villain.
Yeah, I did my unsung villain here.
And you did your unsung hero.
So you give me eye.
Go ahead.
Sorry.
My unsung hero is.
I'm talking over you now.
And this is while the shows go is sometimes people talk over each other.
And I'll shut up.
Yeah.
As I say that.
My unsung hero is Dom Canzon.
He made actually a really good defensive play in right now.
I think that was in Castillo's last inning in the seventh, I want to say,
where he gets to a ball super quickly and gets it in.
A guy was already on first base.
So instead of having second and third with like one out, I want to say,
you keep the double play available first and third.
So it keeps it to a single instead of a double.
That makes a big difference in how you're pitching,
even though it didn't turn into a double play.
Castillo was able to get out of it with just one run after that.
And real quick, without Canzon cutting that baseball off,
there's no force at second base there.
There is no force.
And that's how you got out of the ending?
Yeah.
And as good as that play was from Williamston,
all it is is a stop, right?
It's just a stop.
So, yeah, that play was absolutely massive by Canzon to cut that baseball off.
Yeah.
And then offensively, like, that's almost a bigger development for me.
he goes lefty, lefty, which is something I have yet to really see a ton of success from him.
It's two walks and that very hard hit single.
Now, I know the single was against the righty, but, you know, if you're starting against left-hand
and you're on base two out of three times against the starter, that's excellent from Don Panzone.
You do that, play some right-field defense.
I can start to live with him being my everyday right-fielder.
I'm really starting to come around on him and believe that this is for real and who he is right now.
I agree with you except for the one thing I'll say,
you got to have a platoon bat for him in terms of laid-in situations
and somebody who can play defense firmly.
Like as good as that play was,
so I want to give him a ton of credit.
I still want somebody like a Victor Robles.
Or if they're not going to get a Victor Robles,
how about a Ramon Luriano is a guy who could be a defensive substitution
and rush his left-handed pitching?
I think that's a guy who makes a lot of.
sense to pair with the Don Quanzone.
But I love that call. And honestly, I was thinking about making him my unsung hero as well,
but I chose the Julio route to be a little.
Yeah, because I actually told you before we went live that I'm doing that.
So you wouldn't steal it from me because you've done multiple times.
Well, I just, you know, I go with what I go with.
And I think Don Quanzone is really kind of an unsung hero since that call up.
He has been a massive addition to this offense and it's been fun to watch.
Yeah, totally agree.
and Ramon Loney-Rone was a great call.
I've always liked the way he plays too.
He plays good defense, can match lefties.
And no, I'm not talking about Dylan Moore.
Dylan, please know more.
Dylan, please know more at this point.
That's all I'm going to say.
Because, like, at this point,
it's just we're going to keep repeating the same stuff every single time.
It's too much sample, guys.
I'm sorry.
There is now a two-month sample of him being as bad as any player in the sport, guys.
This is not like, we have our grudges.
against Dylan Moore. We're jealous of...
I do, but it's that plus other stuff.
But it's just, this is two months now. It is, it is a sample size right now that
suggests that Dylan Moore is really hurting this baseball team. I don't like it.
And just being honest with you and we can talk about it because it happened today,
you know, I think this was a bit of an audition for Dylan Moore because there's been talks
about trade stuff, MLB trade rumors talked about, you know, this is a great time for
Jerry to leak that too, that, hey, we'll shop Dylan Moore.
You know, this is a, I think he's available kind of addition.
And to his credit, Dylan Moore looked fine defensively today.
Dylan Moore looked fine defensively.
So that was nice to see.
But this is a large sample now of being like bad hitter doesn't even begin to describe it.
Yeah, it's just bad.
He can't honestly past trade deadline.
I, if he, I don't even say if he continues.
He can't play anymore.
He just cannot play anymore.
Well, he's a pending free agent.
He's a pending free agent and there's just, you know,
I think right now at this point,
if we looked it up beforehand,
he was $3.9 million, what we said.
Yeah.
It would be a $1.3 million hit if you let him go.
Like that, that's nothing.
That's absolutely nothing.
Trade him because somebody's going to have interest in him
based on previous success.
Yeah.
But I don't think he can be a Seattle Mariner for much longer.
