Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. I swear it is legally required by law for the Mariners to lose when the Astros lose. Yeah. Every time. Every time. Every time they win, we win.
Starting point is 00:00:40 Yeah. Yeah, this is a tough one tonight, boys. I felt like we battled back after a tough start from Castile. We'll definitely talk about him. Get a couple big home runs from Randy Rosarena and Eugenio Suarez, but Caleb Tird Ferguson turds the bed a little bit. We'll talk about that decision. We'll talk about that execution.
Starting point is 00:01:05 And then they just, just not enough is the phrase, keep using not enough from your starting pitching not enough from your bullpen and then at the end when you needed a couple stuff to fall your way not enough happens so gris crawford initial thoughts on today's game i may be a little off and not aw i know i'm a little off i'm a lot off i'm very very much an odd duck i may have a different take from this game than everybody else does and i understand frustrating and i came out of this game much more encouraged than first frustrated. I love the fight from the Seattle Mariners today. I loved it. And sometimes you get beat by a really good baseball team. Yeah. Sometimes you lose a game to a really good baseball team. And it wasn't to me
Starting point is 00:01:54 managerial decisions. It wasn't one particular player just being awful, maybe one. We can talk about it. it was just a case of a really good baseball team beating a really good baseball team. Yeah. I thought this was a fantastic game. I thought it was one of the, again, I've mentioned this a few times. A neutral party had to have a blast watching this, an absolute blast, especially fifth inning on. Fifth inning on, I think you had to just enjoy the heck out of this. but there were clutch moments, there were some amazing at bats.
Starting point is 00:02:35 There was, I think, some really nice bounce back that we can talk about from the starter today. It's frustrating to lose. It's frustrating to lose a one-run game. I came away with this thinking the Seattle Mariners are a really good baseball team. And if they play like this for the next, I believe there's 20, 30, exactly 30 games to go, right? If they play like this over the next 30 games, they're going to win a heck of a lot of baseball games, and they're going to go pretty deep in October, too. Yeah, I wouldn't say frustrated is the word I would use.
Starting point is 00:03:08 I would say concerned. Not overall, but especially if we're going to do, let's just do it. Let's start with the start with Castillo. That's his third pooper in a row. And his Delo is extremely down. He's looking 92, 94 right now. We need to have a conversation about Louise Castillo because it's weird because during the of July, he led MLB starting pitchers in F-war. He had a very good month of July.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Ever since the month turned to August, though, man, he has just not been good. It's, I think a lot of it has to do with a little bit of regression. If you look at a lot of the expected stats, that month of July was pretty, I don't want to say outlier, but you could expect it to come back down to Earth a little bit. And I think that's exactly what happening. I also, I've said this for a couple years now. I don't, I don't agree with the way they're developing him. And believe it or not, a 33-year-old can still be developed as a pitcher, as any sort of player. I just think they're relying way too much on the fastball for him. And I get it. If you have an elite fastball, you want to ride that as much you possibly
Starting point is 00:04:21 can. But lately, he just hasn't had that. And his secondary stuff just isn't there. And so when the fastball command and now Velo slash stuff is not there, this is what's going to happen. So that's my take on Luis Castillo. I am very concerned with him for the rest of the year, to be honest. I will not disagree with anything you just said, but I will say I was much more than this after the first inning. The first inning was just awful, awful, awful. from the second inning on,
Starting point is 00:04:54 I was really impressed with Luis Castillo. And let's make this abundantly clear. If you have any five-run innings, you can't have a good start. It can't be. Yeah. It cannot be a good start. But I was encouraged by what I saw from Castillo
Starting point is 00:05:11 from inning two on. And I expect him to be significantly better based on what I saw from inning two through five today. Yeah. It's still not okay to give up two homers, including a grand slam in the first inning. It can't happen, right? It's just not it's not conducive to winning. The most obvious point is obvious ever.
Starting point is 00:05:35 But from inning to on, Luis Castillo pitched fantastic baseball. And it's nice to see that version still there. The overall takeaway about the velocity and the overall takeaway, his ERA, before today coming into August was 6.05. It went up today for sure. I was really encouraged by what I saw from innings two through five. It doesn't make anyone okay. And it doesn't mean that you can't take away more from any one than two through five. If you want to do that, you're not. Obviously, you're welcome to you whatever the heck. Yeah, yeah. But I don't think it's crazy to look at innings two through five and say that Luis Castillo pitched like Luis Castillo either.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Sure. What can they do to avoid these big innings? Because that's been the biggest issue with the starting pitching lately. They just, Bryce Miller gives up a four spot in the second inning yesterday. We saw Logan Gilbert give up a five spot, I believe, against Philadelphia over his two innings of work. Yep. What is happening that is creating these blow-up innings?
Starting point is 00:06:46 What also is happening that for the, the most part, those guys have pitched pretty well outside of those blowout innings. So some of it's a good lineup. Ramon Luriano's a good hitter. He had a really nice day today. I want to see Luis Castillo pitch like inning two through five and just forget about inning one. I can't guarantee that's going to happen, but I was encouraged enough by what I saw
Starting point is 00:07:10 from innings after that first inning that I do have a little bit more confidence heading into September. Yeah. And I'm not completely saying. He's cooked or anything like that by any means. Absolutely. I just, I'm, my concern levels raising with him. I need to see some good starts.
Starting point is 00:07:29 Otherwise, you're not going to be in this rotation. And like, for the playoffs. Right. So, like, it's kind of on him at this point. Sure. If we even get there. Hopefully, like, that won't be such a big deal come that time. But I just think, and Adam points it out, he's,
Starting point is 00:07:48 He actually started to use his secondary stuff innings two through five. He started to find that slider. I just, that's what he was when he came here. He was a sinker pitcher, a changeup pitcher, a slider pitcher, and then he threw in a four seamer every now and then. And the Mariners, for whatever reason, and it worked for one year in 2023, for whatever reason they turned him into a four seam basically only guy.
Starting point is 00:08:15 And I get it if it's the elite and it was for, a long time, then you can lean on that as much as possible, but I just don't think it's there right now. So maybe he, I trust that he's going to develop the way he throws. Because I still, I totally agree with you. I think he battled really well. And that's one of the attributes that I think he's very, very strong in is his ability to get through five if he absolutely needs it, even if when he doesn't have his stuff. And he still, like, we haven't had a huge enough moment to really evaluate this recently, but he still pitches well in the big moments, I think. Sure. Yeah. So, like, I still, like, believe there's something there. I just, I need to see more
Starting point is 00:08:57 from him in terms of the results. I don't think there's anything that I can disagree with there. The, you know, and by the way, but what you mean by saying works is he was an ace during that season. Exactly. Yes. He's been a very good pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. Even, even with these clunkers over those things. Luis Castillo's been a very valuable baseball player for the Seattle Mariner's, for the overwhelming majority of 2020. He's the lowest ERA in Mariner history. That might not be the case now, but.
Starting point is 00:09:25 I don't think it is unfortunately, but because his ERA's up to 3.87, and it was down to like 3.1. I'm at his career in his career. Right. Yeah, I'm just saying that if it goes up by 0.6 over this year, it's probably gone up by like 0.3 or 0.4 for his career, something along those lines. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:43 So it's not that Luis Castillo's cooked. It's not that Luis Castillo hasn't been a good Seattle Mariner. What can they do to avoid these blow-up innings? What can the Seattle Mariners do? And that's going to be on Pete Woodworth. That's going to be on Pete and Luis as well. You know, Luis has to take accountability. I'm sure he is.
Starting point is 00:10:04 But what can they do to avoid these just horrible innings, especially early on? Yep, totally agree. Today wasn't all bad, though. I agree with Chris. I think there's a lot to be encouraged with from today. We'll get to that right after the break. Comment in who your unsung hero is.
Starting point is 00:10:22 There's a lot of good choices today. Great to see the bats wake up a little bit towards the end. And like you said, I like the battle. Honestly, I can maybe think of one or two just truly bad at bats. Other than that, up and down the lineup was really good AB after good AB. And sometimes if you run into a buzzsaw, like you said, You're not going to beat the Padres six out of six times in a season. I'm sorry it wasn't going to happen.
Starting point is 00:10:48 You don't want to sleep in the first ever better cup. Come on. No, we got to make them want to come back and then lose more often. So we'll get to that right after the break here on the Lockdown Marriage Postcast. Time to fuel up and turn it up with five-hour energy transfusion. Having something that is, you know, going to help you get through that day, but not make you feel icky as well. That's one of my favorite parts about something like five hour transfusion, is that you're getting that energy, but you're feeling healthy while it happens as well.

Starting point is 00:13:10 because Futures Day is one day and one day only. Fan dual play your game. Brandon White says ads are brutal after a loss. I did not mean to put that one up, but I understand. Happy anniversary. 36 years, James. That congratulations, my friend. I wish Streamyard didn't make the comments go so fast because one of these days I'm
Starting point is 00:13:39 going to put up something horrible, someone says. I'm just going to exit out and live my life. That sounds good. Let's live our life. Let's live the life of the Seattle Mariners in this one. They drop this one final score. Seven six. Seven six,
Starting point is 00:13:56 thank you. One of these days I'll actually have the score in front of me when I do it. I remember moments from the game, guys. I don't go over the box score. That's what we do on the Mariners Postcast here. We don't run through the box score with you. We bring you the biggest moments of the game. And that's why we think we do it really, really well.
Starting point is 00:14:11 Thank you so much for supporting us. Please like the videos you haven't already. Chris Crawford, it wasn't all bad today. offense was great. I am very encouraged with what I'm seeing from Ehuehanyos Suarez. Just, I mean, it's not even the home run. It's the walk before. Julio had an awesome day to day.
Starting point is 00:14:27 I honestly think one of the best overall at bat to at bat to at bat days for Julio Rodriguez. Just tell me what you're seeing from the offense if you want to point out any specific moment or anything like that. We can go to the fifth inning if you want. Sure. So just real quick. the only negative I have from this game, truly, the only real negative. I know, honestly, even Luis Castillo, I can ignore that first inning. Your mileage may vary, but I can't, just because I'm a prisoner of the moment, I guess.
Starting point is 00:14:59 But here's what I'll say. The only thing that I didn't like about this game, the first 11 at bats against Dillen Seas were awful, awful. It was not a good offensive day. And I think they were kind of pressing a little bit because they fall down five nothing, right? from that point on, the offense was spectacular. And I'm saying that, can I get my unsung villain out of the way right now? Let's go. It's A.J. Perelor for building the bullpen of from all Hades.
Starting point is 00:15:26 Goodness gracious. How many guys throwing 101 miles per hour did we see in that game? I think four. More a hon, Miller, Robert Suarez. And then you've got guys like Jason Adam, who is filthy. Their bullpen's really good. So honestly, getting back into this game, and yes, I know they end up not scoring some runs, but the bads look good against those guys.
Starting point is 00:15:51 The bats looked really solid. Even in the ninth inning, we saw Randy Rose Arena pee on a baseball into center field. Then you saw a big dumper just get underneath one in left field. That's probably the worst of them. And then Julio Rodriguez hit, I believe, a 932 mile per hour liner to Fernando Tatis Jr., right? Yeah. I like the way the offense look that fifth inning though was phenomenal and watching randy a rosarina just mollywop the F out of that baseball was so awesome to see and then Julio and I'll be honest
Starting point is 00:16:30 so big dumper draws the walk and then Julio gets to O2 not looking very good I was about to say it was one of his worst at bats but then and then that line into right field, right field, right field, the ability to use the entire park is what makes Julio Rodriguez potentially someday an 80 grade hitter. All of the tools are there. It's just about picking up the baseball better and having a better swing decisions. But you cannot teach what Julio Rodriguez can do with those liners to right field. It's so hard to make hard contact to the opposite field. And then, Gino. That's one of the coolest moments of the year.
Starting point is 00:17:13 And this is why I'm honestly the most frustrated with this game, because you should have won it. Yeah. You should have won it. But that, that swing. And the crazy thing was, too, I was about to throw a dang fit about another long foul ball. The Seattle Mariners hit my long. I was going to say, you could tell Gina was like, okay, I got it.
Starting point is 00:17:34 Yeah. Let's do it again. And the fact that I believe it was the very next pitch. He ends up. just clobbering that baseball and giving you that six five lead against an awesome relief pitcher and Jason Adams. This was a fun offensive effort. And again, even in the six, seventh, eighth, ninth, everything except for their bats against Moron, who is just a absolute goblin of a pitcher, just a goblin. Everything else looked good. You had good at bats against Mason Miller.
Starting point is 00:18:06 you had good at bats against some of the best relief pitchers in the sport. You just ultimately didn't get the results. And maybe if you have a little bit better playing against C. C.C.erly on, you do win this game, right? Question for you. Yeah. First ball, totally agree with you on the Gino moment. Just, I love his approach.
Starting point is 00:18:29 He knows, hey, you're going to give me the couple of strikeouts, but I'm going to get out in front of the breaking ball. And I'm going to just destroy that thing to left field. And that's what he does. I yelled really loud, by the way, when that happened. I was really excited. Very, very excited. Well, what's funny was I went to my grandma's house.
Starting point is 00:18:47 I was watching this game from two margaritas in Allen, Washington with my family. We were celebrating my mom's birthday. And by the way, I just want to get that out of the way. Happy birthday, mom. I love you so much. I miss you more than everything in the world. She should have been 64 today. But so I got to my grandmas listening to the game on the radio, so missing it, but kind of get in the feel that Castillo was pitching well and about a 10 minute drive.
Starting point is 00:19:14 And then my aunt Shannon came over and started talking my grandma's ear off and she missed the homer. And I was like, Grandma, turn around. Look at the score. Oh, but it was such a cool moment. And that's why you make a trade like that. That's why you make a trade. Okay, you had a question for me. Yeah, I have a question regarding.
Starting point is 00:19:37 So after the Mariners get the lead, the six five lead. Yeah. They go to Caleb Ferguson to come out the sixth thing. There can be some hindsight looking back should they have gone straight to Spire. In the moment, I was like, yeah, I'm totally fine with that. There even is a thought, like there, I saw a couple comments. Because of how well Castillo bounced back. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:01 You could have left him in there. Yeah. I would, I still, I think in the moment, I was like, this is exactly what I would do. I would go to Caleb Ferguson right now. You got, I believe it was Gavin Sheets first. So lefty, lefty, who ends up pissing on the baseball. And then you've got reverse split Luriano, who has been much better versus right-hand to pitching. So you got the platoon advantage versus two hitters.
Starting point is 00:20:24 And then I believe the next one, was it Cronenworth? I have to look at their lineup. But I think that's what it was. So it was lefty, two lefties and then reverse split Luriana. So I was like, this is perfect. situation for Caleb Ferguson, he needs to pitch better. Yeah. Caleb Ferguson just didn't get the job done today. I don't think I have, in fact, that's not.
Starting point is 00:20:43 I don't think. I know I don't have any issue with the decision to do what you did. If Castillo would have been facing some righties, I probably would have let him go another inning. But because you're facing those lefties, because you're facing someone in Gavin Sheets, who has 70 grade raw pop and can absolutely take you ding dong city, yeah, I don't have any issue with that. And to be fair, Luriano has reverse splits this year. He has kind of a history of crushing left-handed pitching. That really plays more against, but he hasn't been good this year.
Starting point is 00:21:13 And that does matter somewhat. Caleb Ferguson's just got a pitch better. And, you know, I was looking at the numbers from Caleb Ferguson and thinking, oh, this is a pattern. No, he's actually been pretty good since he got to Seattle, right? Recency bias suggests that the stuff hasn't looked great. It hasn't looked great. He just got to pitch better. Sometimes. you get beat and the only other thing I can think of is and I think that ball probably gets through anyway maybe you're not playing the infield in in that situation I was curious about that yeah I was like wait a second you know it's it's not such a big deal if they tie the game up I just feel like and that runner ends up scoring credit to Freddie for meen terrific safety squeeze that was a great
Starting point is 00:22:02 bun. Like as much as I hate bunting. And bunting to score runs is okay. Bunting to get on base is okay. Bunting to give up outs is stupid. But when you're Freddie for mean and you're going to get out
Starting point is 00:22:17 anyway, you might as well do something successful for your baseball team. No, Caleb Ferguson's just got to pitch better. And I still have confidence that Caleb Ferguson will help this team. In fact, you kind of have to because there's enough you can't do taylor sissetto as your second lefty can't
Starting point is 00:22:36 you can't and you saw what happened with this bullpen when you didn't have a second liftie for most of the year so yeah you can be frustrated i saw a lot of people saying go to spire there i respectfully disagree i want spire for a little more high leverage situation not that's still the six it's still the sixth it's still the sixth i would much rather just have if you want to argue though and again, your mileage may vary with all of this stuff. If you want to argue that, hey, you're warming up Spire anyway. Why not just go to him in that situation? That's fair.
Starting point is 00:23:11 That's fair. Because Gabe Spire is better than Caleb Ferguson. That's not even an insult to Caleb Ferguson. It's a compliment to how good Gabe Spire has been this year. Yep. I love how the bullpen pitched after Ferguson, though. Gabe Spire was excellent. Margis?
Starting point is 00:23:26 That was nice to see because Vargas. It needed, by the way. Oh, absolutely. And the nice thing is now every high leverage reliever should be just fine for this game on Wednesday, which is a massive game. Massive game. I don't have any issues with anything Dan Wilson did today. I know he's often our scapegoat. Wait a second.
Starting point is 00:23:53 Can we clip that? Yeah, fair. Because we may not play it again. We've been very critical of him lately. Yeah. But we have to tell, we have to call the way it is when he does what we think. And like, obviously, our opinion isn't gospel, mine, yours, whoever's, right? Everyone has a different way of looking at baseball games. We just like to kind of contextualize it for you guys. When we, if we disagree a large amount of the time with Dan Wilson, we have to tell you when we agree with them. Yeah. Yeah. And there have been lots of great moments. And if you watch the show religiously, like a lot of you do, we have brought them up. We have brought them up when we have liked what Dan Wilson does. And I had no issue with anything Dan Wilson did today. You just got beat. Yeah. You got beat. Play a little better offense in the first four innings. Don't give up grand slams.
Starting point is 00:24:44 You win this baseball game. And you still have a chance to win this series. You still have a chance. By the way, unsung hero is legitimately the Colorado flipping Rockies. Yes. Thank you. It's amazing that we don't lose any ground because their 17th win on the road this year. 17th. Unsung villain. 26th.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Unsung villain is the Chicago White Sox for giving up a four-run lead to the Royals and two ends. So we got one hero, one villain. Because you hated on Bobby Witt today in the... I did. I really did. It's a two-man race.
Starting point is 00:25:24 All right. He ain't getting anywhere near those two. It is, here's why It's a three-man race because three people have to show up for the MLB reward show thing. But in all real sincerity, it's a two-man race. I didn't see how Aaron Judge did today, by the way. I'm starting to pay super close attention to that. Really?
Starting point is 00:25:44 Oh, yeah. I'm not yet for some reason. I'm usually a scoreboard watching guy. I am not yet to that point. I am so zoned in on the Mariners taking care of their own business when it gets closer to the point where, you know, okay, win here, loss there. puts you into that and start clenching, then that's what I'll start to really pay. Oh, for three with a run score and a walk. He sucks. Aaron Jones sucks. Worthless player. See him in the postseason last year. Yeah. Yeah. Juan Soto's better.
Starting point is 00:26:14 Yeah. He is. Just like you guys now. All right. Thank you guys so much. Just rage baiting over here. Thank you guys so much. Really appreciate hanging out today. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow. 1 p.m. start. Brian Wu versus U. Darvice. Let's go get the series. win. We already secured the better cup. Screw that. Let's go get the series win. And hopefully the Astros lose. I would love to actually gain a game. Geez, that would be great on a day that they're not playing. Or they are playing, excuse me. So that would be massive. Any last words? Chris Crawford. Love you, Mommy.
