This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day.
Welcome into the inaugural episode of the Mariners Postcast here on the Locked-on Mariner's
Postcast page, excuse me.
I am Anderson Hurst.
This is Christopher Crawford here with me.
We're going to go live after every single Mariners game, break it all down for you guys.
Kind of a tough one to get us started here as the Mariners drop the first of three against the New York Yankees.
Kind of a little bit extended of the postgame show because we had to wait for the Oswaldo Cabrera to kind of happen.
Before we get into it, let's just prayers out to him.
It looked like a tough injury.
For sure.
Yeah, that's the exact opposite of what we were hoping to have.
obviously where you're hoping the Mariners could win,
but most importantly,
just seeing something gruesome like that
is just not a fun way to get this started.
Yeah, not at all,
including an L with that as well.
But before we get into kind of the nitty-gritty of things,
I'm just going to introduce myself.
I'll start with our expert.
Some of you may know him as the host of Maya Y,
but to me he's a weekly contributor on Maliwap Mondays,
who I will be leaning on throughout the season
to not only tell me that I'm wrong,
but how wrong I am and why I'm wrong. You might fear, you might hear him from time to time
talk me off the ledge when I get a little too emotional about my favorite baseball team.
My good friend and colleague, Mr. Christopher Crawford, hello, and how are you?
I'm doing well, man. I'm bummed out by that injury we just saw, but I'm just super excited to be
doing this to get a chance to talk to this awesome locked on audience, the job that Ty and Kobe
we have done in building this audience and a chance to, you know, talk to Mariners
to Mariner Baseball, the highs and the lows, there's going to be good, there's going to be
bad, there's going to be ugly.
Tonight, a little more bad and ugly than good, unfortunately, but there's some good stuff
to talk about as well.
I'm just super excited to get to do this and super excited to get to do it with a person
I consider a friend.
Oh, I appreciate that very, very much.
So let's get into it.
For those who don't know me, my name's Anderson Hurst.
I am a constant contributor on Sports Radio KJR.
And you know, you might hear me talking Mariners.
You might hear me on the Ian Furness show.
You might hear me on the Molliwap Monday segment.
And I'll also make appearances across all the other shows as well.
But welcome it.
We're super happy to have you guys here.
The idea here of the Mariners Postcast is to go live right after the game,
break it all down for you.
As if we're your two buddies sitting at the bar with you watching the game.
So I really appreciate you guys coming and hang with us for a little bit.
For those of you who are curious right away, what's going on here?
Colby and Ty aren't going anywhere.
This is just an addition to the locked on Mariners page.
They're still going to do their daily podcast every single day.
They're going to kind of give a 30,000 foot view of the team a little bit,
bigger picture sort of stuff.
Chris and I are here to just break down the game that just happened.
And let's get into it.
The Mariners drop game one against the New York Yankees,
Emerson Hancock takes the mound looks pretty good through four innings,
but that fifth inning was rough.
Yeah.
So what's your overall value?
of the Hancock start tonight, Mr. Chris.
You know, I don't think he was as bad as the line necessarily suggests, but that doesn't
mean he was good. And it was pretty clear, you know, there's a reason we've got in that little
side thing there, Hancock command. It was clear he did not have his best command. Now,
for those unfamiliar, command and control are not the same thing. Controls the ability to throw
strikes. Command is the ability to throw quality strikes. And he just didn't throw enough today.
And he had some control issues, too, especially early on that we can talk about. I don't think
it was a disastrous start, all things considered. Looking at the line right here,
seven runs, five strikeouts, four walks. That is not what you're signing up for. And you're hoping
for better, especially after coming off a sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays. But I don't think
it was a disastrous first start, but certainly not the way we were hoping that this series would
start. Yeah, to me, there's kind of two really big moments in this in this game where the things
could have changed. Julio hits the home run in the bottom of the first inning. And
absolutely crushed.
It was funny because the broadcast was just talking about how Ritey's
have not had a lot of luck against Clark Schmidt,
and then he hangs one,
and Julio sends it into orbit,
which is great to see him hitting mistake pitches once again,
because I think that's been a little bit of a,
not issue,
but he hasn't done it as much as we expect him to do.
He's been getting on base a lot higher rates,
but his mistake pitch calculation has been a little bit off,
so it was great to see him get the most of that.
Top of the second.
Hancock gets in a mini jam based off some walks, which we'll get into that in a little bit.
But, you know, he's never going to be the type of guy to get a bunch of strikeouts and blow you guys away.
So you got to avoid the walks if you're Emerson Hancock.
That didn't necessarily come to bite him this start, but it will if he continues to make that happen.
Bottom of the second, though, this is going to be kind of the first big moment we talk about.
Randy gets a walk.
Rowdy gets a walk.
So you got first and second, nobody out with Laotie Tavaris coming to bat.
And they or him, I don't know if this was a Dan decision or a Laoti Tavares decision.
I tried to go with the sacrifice bunt to move the guys over.
It was a well-executed sacrifice bunt by a lady Tavares moves rowdy.
Second and third with Dylan Moore up to bat with one out.
Dylan Moore strikes out.
You kind of give away that opportunity to have an out, to have an out be a productive
out to get a run.
Right.
And now you get the Ben Williamson fly out to right field.
What do you think about the sackbunt decision and then anything after that?
Yeah, I didn't love it.
And I'm hoping that was Tavaris trying to bunt on his own.
Well, kind of a weird one, right?
It's like you don't want your manager to be giving a way out,
but you don't want your player thinking that's the right idea as well.
Just didn't seem like the right time to be given up out.
So you had Clark Schmidt on the ropes.
You can play for the beginning there.
And knowing how this Yankees offense operates, you need beginnings against him.
This is the highest scoring team in baseball with the best hitter in baseball by a large margin.
You can aren't playing for one run in this situation.
Even in the bottom with the bottom of the lineup coming up, I really didn't like giving up that out.
Now, I didn't love the at bats that they received after that bunch either.
It wasn't a good at bat from Williamson.
It wasn't a good at bat from more.
But you're taking away those chances to have that beginning.
Maybe you have different luck.
You put pressure on Clark Schmidt, a guy who is a good pitcher.
but certainly not someone who is going to be dominant.
And I don't think he was dominant tonight,
even though he did a much better job after that first inning Homer to Julio
and the second inning Homer, or excuse me,
whatever inning it was for Polanco.
Yeah, third inning.
Thank you, my friend.
That is what you are here for.
Outside of that, though, I don't think that they really did a great job against Schmidt.
And it's disappointing that they took away the chance for a big inning early on.
Yeah, and he looked pretty sharp.
I'm not going to say that it was necessarily a mariner's having bad at bats that was the part of the equivalent.
But in the most key moments, that ended up being the case.
I'm going to just throw it out there right away.
For those you guys who don't know me, I hate bunting almost all the time,
especially sacrifice bunting to the bottom of the lineup.
I'm not a huge fan of it, not like giving away and out to the bottom of the.
of your order after Clark Schmidt walks two straight batters, at least try and work a walk there.
The one positive, I will say, from it is it takes away the double play, which I think is not
nothing, especially the Mariners have been hitting a lot of double plays lately.
So again, bottom your lineup, you could go both ways with that.
I don't love it.
I would have rather had the three chances to get a run instead of two.
They end up getting nothing, though.
Yeah.
So that was a big moment in the game.
After that, we go top three, Julio, after Trent Grisham destroys a ball to center field,
Julio slightly missed times his route to that spot, tries to leap up to make the catch.
I don't know if it was going out if he wasn't there.
It was hard to tell on the broadcast, but it looked like he may have, in some way,
gifted a home run to Trent Grisham.
And then it happened again, a couple of innings later, basically the same.
same hit from Trent Grisham.
This time it got over the wall without Julio making a run at it.
But what are your thoughts on kind of the defensive side of things?
He's been so good all year.
Yeah, he's been great.
But I will say that I bet you if you ask Julio Rodriguez after this game,
he might say that maybe I should have caught those balls.
Like those are plays that Julio Rodriguez can make.
Now, I'm not going to say he should make them.
I'm not even going to go say that it's a 50-50 proposition thing.
It's really hard to rob homers.
It's hard to get the timing.
It's hard to just get back on the.
baseball sometimes. But I bet you, Julio Rodriguez thinks he should have caught at least one of
those baseballs. And it's not to excuse the pitch or to take credit away from Trent Grisham,
who was a absolute menace today against the Seattle Mariners, really solid player. It's nice to have
a Trent Grisham on your roster, especially when you don't need him to be an offensive force,
and the Yankees do not. And he's an offensive force. Yeah, he's been hitting the ball awfully well,
and he sure did on Monday night. But I think if you asked Julio honestly, say,
should have probably caught at least one of those baseballs.
I'm not going to hold too much against him, though.
He's been so good defensively that, you know,
not robbing a couple of home runs on poorly pitched balls from Emerson Hancock.
I'm not going to go too crazy.
But at the same time, kind of would have been nice to see him bring at least one of those
baseball back, at least putting the baseball into play, you know,
knocking it down and turning it into a double.
But that might be a little bit beggars, can't be choosers there.
Yeah, and then bottom three, Polo hits another.
their home run. You get a, you get a home run from Julio Rodriguez in the first inning. You get a
home run from Polo in the third, and then you get one from Cal. I think it was in the seventh inning.
So the three of your big bats that you need to come through tonight, it's a little nice
constellation prize, even though the Mariners don't come up with a win in game one against the Yankees.
Top five. Let's get into it. This is where things get a little bit rough for Emerson Hancock,
like we talked about earlier in the episode.
First four innings, he looked pretty good, was limiting damage.
Even though he had a couple walks here and there,
he seemed to get the pitch to get the out when he absolutely needed it.
It was the Aaron Judge single factory slash walk factory today,
which he will take every single time.
He comes to bat.
But the top of the fifth inning was a tough one.
Let's go through the sequence here.
Grisham hits another dead center home run.
We just talked about that was the second one with Julio there.
Judge gets a single, Rice gets a double, Goldschmidt RBI single, first pitch after a mountain
visit. I made a note there. Cody Bellinger, RBI single, and then Austin Wells, it's the three-run
Homer. What happened with Emerson Hancock in the top of fifth there? Just completely lost
command of it. Just completely lost command of it. And good hitters are going to take advantage of that.
And we're talking about, look, Cody Bellinger hasn't been great this year. Former MVP,
Paul Goldschmidt, former runner-up MVP, Aaron Judge.
obviously we know what he's done. And Austin Wells is an awful nice player as well. You can't make
mistakes to those type of hitters. It doesn't matter if you're pitching in T-Mobile Park. It doesn't
matter if you're pitching in Yellowstone Park. You are going to have trouble if you're facing
those type of hitters and you don't have really good command of your stuff. And Emerson Hancock,
even though he's been pretty darn solid, especially after that disastrous first start, he did a nice
Boston was one of the best starts I think of the year. You know, those eight strikeouts,
getting a ton of swings and misses, did a nice job against the Angels, did a nice job in his last
outing, you know, the three walks come around to score, but you still get a quality start from the guy
for a team that just has not had very many quality starts this year, as weird as it is to say.
But tonight was an example of what can go wrong with Emerson Hancock, and it's an example of,
and we're going to try and keep this more on what's happening per game.
Right.
But you cannot ignore the fact that Emerson Hancock is not George Kirby and he is not Logan Gilbert
and not having those guys in this rotation right now puts a lot of pressure on guys like
Emerson Hancock.
He ideally is your sixth starter, your swing man.
Right now, he's a mid-rotation starter for you.
And tonight was an example of why maybe that's not ideal against a team like the Yankees.
Yeah, you need those guys back.
And it sucks that this is kind of the fourth game in a row.
The Mariners have lost after the three-game sweep against the Toronto Blue Jays over the
weekend. But let's go over the exit velocity from those, that sequence in the fifth inning here.
You got the Trent Grisham-Hone run, which was 106 off the bat.
The Aaron Judge Single, which was 112 off the bat. Maybe you could say Randy could catch that,
but then when you look at that exit, Delo, with the top spin, which they talked about on
the broadcast, that's going to be a tough catch to make. He's not a defensive first guy.
I think he did a good job just getting in front of it and letting it into the single.
So 106, 112, 103 with the Ben Rice double.
on the dot was the Paul Goldschmidt single. 98.7 was the Cody Bellinger single,
96.3 for an Anthony Volpey lineout and then 105.7, Austin Wells, the three-run homer,
which kind of was the difference in the game. That kind of where things started to unravel a little
bit for your Seattle Mariners. So when you give up that much hard contact, it's going to be,
it's going to be tough to win in any sort of situation. No, and again, it's just a case of
Emerson Hancock has to either have impeccable command or see a much bigger jump in his secondary
offerings because if you take a look, he's done a really good job of avoiding hard contact this
year even without great secondary stuff. He relies on that sinker so much, but it didn't sink
enough tonight. That's for dang sure. Yep. It seems like lately he's one of the reasons he's
had kind of a jump, I think, in his ability this year is because of those secondary pitches
that he's been able to locate, but he was hanging them a lot, especially in that fifth inning.
So hopefully that's just kind of a blip in the radar.
But we're starting to get that concern.
I think we talked over the weekend, like, okay, the sweep to the Toronto Blue Jays,
this next series kind of determines what that series was.
Right.
If they can win two out of three against the New York Yankees here and maybe, you know,
do what you can against the Padres later in the week, that three-game sweep to the Blue Jays
looks like just a blip in the radar.
But anything less than that, you start to think,
this is where things start to turn down a little bit after a nine game or nine series winning streak.
Before we move on to our underrated performance of the evening,
which is something that Chris and I are going to do every single episode with you guys.
We're going to bring kind of an unsung hero, so to speak,
into the end of the fold a little bit, talk about something.
Maybe it was a play.
Maybe it's a streak they kept alive, hint, hint.
But it's going to be something we talk about after every single.
game. But before we do that, I want to tell you guys a little bit about Monarch money. It's,
it's pretty crazy that we have all of these things that cost so much money and it's hard
to keep track of everything. But if you ever check your bank account and wonder where your money
went between dining out online shopping and entertainment, it's easy to lose track. And that's where
Monarch money comes in. Your personal CFO giving you full visibility and control over your
finances. It's just a great thing to have. Yeah, Monarch Money just isn't a budging
an app. It's a complete financial command center. You can track all your accounts,
investments, and spending in one place. So you stop just managing your money and start building
wealth. Anders, I hate having to go through a billion different things to find my millions
upon millions of dollars. It's just so hard being so rich and having so many apps to go
through. So the fact that Monarch money is also saving me money and cutting me at my time,
because as a millionaire, my time is very valuable. And as a fellow millionaire, right, Anders?
You all know how valuable that is. Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah, it's, I'm getting there, but probably,
probably not to your level just. You have a couple years on me. But if, if you are like us and you
struggle in that way, take control of your finances with Monarch money. Use locked on MLB at
monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. That's monarchmoney.com code locked on MLB for half off your first
year. And what you might need to use that saved money that you would get from Monarch Money for
is some wonderful pistachios. And I'm a huge pistachio stance. This is a great thing for me.
If you're looking for a snack that's both delicious and nutritious, crack into a good source of protein with wonderful
pistachios. Wonderful pistachios is one of the highest protein nuts. Each one out serving has six
grams of protein giving you over 10% of your daily value. Plus, they're packed with fiber and better for you
unsaturated fats to help you keeping fuller longer. Now, I personally, you know, we talked about not
wasting time. That's why I like the no shelf pistachios. I love being able to open that thing up,
just going right in. I love the honey mustard ones. I also have had the hot honey ones. They're
So good.
I think a pistachio, especially wonderful pistachios, is probably an 80 on the 2080 scale.
Oh, you're going full scouting department here.
Okay.
I need to crack open.
I need to have that feeling of cracking open the nut and putting it in my mouth every single time.
So, yeah, that's kind of my, that's my snack of choice when I go with pistachios.
So get snacking and get cracking.
With the snack that packs a protein punch, visit wonderful pistachios.com.
to learn more. All right, Chris, let's get into our underrated performance of the evening.
I'll let you go first. Our inaugural episode here, what we'll do for anyone who is kind of new to this,
as everyone is here, every single Mariners game, we're going to give you an underrated performance
of the evening, kind of under the radar sort of unsung hero, so to speak. So who is yours for today?
There's a few options I think you could go with, but I'm going to go with Casey Legamina.
I think the job that he has done since entering this bullpen outside of one kind of shaky effort against Boston has been really solid.
And being a bridge to be able to get to the high leverage guys to be able to have that performance.
And you know, hope you get back into the game.
And they did kind of get back into that game.
I think Casey Ligamina has been a huge pickup for this bullpen.
Give some credit to Bizarro as well.
I know he gives up the run, but two winnings of one run baseball with three strikeouts.
You'll certainly take that.
I'm a little concerned that Bizarro's arm's going to fall off with how often they've had to use him.
The mop up guy, and you've had the mop up a lot recently.
Oh, my goodness.
Well, he might be having to mop up a new right arm pretty soon if I'm being completely honest with you
because he is just being very, very, very overworked in my personal opinion, but doing a nice job of it.
But Legamino would be my guy.
Yeah, I think that's a good choice.
Going with the safe choice, I see with the relievers there.
I'm going to go with something a little more.
I don't know if this is unsung.
hero or specifically from this game.
But Randy Rosarayne had another great game.
Two for three at the walk and a double.
And the big reason I'm giving it to him is because he extended his on base streak
at 34 games.
If you're getting on base out of 34 straight games, you are providing excellent value
to your team on the offensive side of the baseball.
I think his at bats are incredibly professional.
He'll have his step out every once in a while.
But it seems like if you need a guy to come through in a big moment,
And Randy's, might be my choice right after Jorge Polanco and maybe Cal Raleigh.
But Randy's right there.
You expect him to have a good at bat in a big situation.
He's taking his walks, which is leading to his on-base streak.
He's hitting the ball hard, too.
It's not like he's just a walk merchant or anything like that.
He maybe hasn't hit any long balls as you'd expect at this point.
But I think that'll start to come.
His in-depth look really, really good.
And I'm just happy for him.
And I'm excited to watch him play more baseball for the Seattle.
And honestly, I only didn't pick Randy Rose Arena because I wanted you to have Randy.
Oh, that's so sweet of you.
Yeah.
I'm a very, very unselfish person 15 to 20% of the time.
No, he's been awesome.
Like, you know, you take a look at some of the offensive efforts tonight, and there's not some, J.P.
Crawford really struggled tonight.
And he was due for some struggles, to be fair, but O for four with three strikeouts.
Julio's three at bats after the homer wasn't so great.
You hit a homer.
You're doing pretty well.
The guy who took the best at bats again was Randy a Rose Arena.
And, you know, we know that the locked on sports audience is a smart audience,
but if you're ever looking for examples of why batting average is not the stat to look at
and on base percentage, the Mariners have two perfect examples in Big Dumber and Randy a Rose Arena.
Guys who just make such quality at bats, and it doesn't always end well because baseball,
of course it doesn't always end well.
But they do enough, they get on base enough to be well above average offensive players.
Now, the defensive difference between the two is palpable.
There is no doubt that Randy or Rosarina gives me the hebie-jee-g-be sometimes in left field.
But it's not bad enough that you would be like,
we got to get rid of this dude because his offense is so good.
And my buddy Matthew Hogue brings up that Ben Williamson once again really struggling.
I just want to see a little more pop from Randy.
That's the only thing that I could complain about here is I'd like to see the baseball go over the fence a little bit more.
but getting on base is the most important thing in the sport.
And he's doing such a good job of doing that.
A month plus of getting on is awesome.
Yeah, I think you can't ask for anything more that he's given you at this point.
If he starts to hit the ball over the fence,
then he's going to give you all-star boats at that point.
So I really, really think what he's brought to the table has gone under the radar a lot,
especially with the bottom third of the lineup with what Polanco's done.
Everyone loves Cal Raleigh, and they should.
Julio is a spark plug for conversation, especially his early season statistics.
But I really, really think Randy has gone under the radar.
And I absolutely love what he's bringing to the team at this point.
So yeah, those are our underrated performances.
Anything else to add before we move on to the next game, Mr. Chris Crawford?
A few people talking about the decision to bring in Troy Taylor after you bring it within an 8-5 game.
I got to be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of that decision either.
Now, I am long term a big Troy Taylor fan.
He's someone who has been in my top 15 prospects.
But the way he's pitched this year,
that was kind of given up on the baseball game,
especially against this Yankees lineup.
And, you know, I think we talked about this on Maliwap Monday,
but for those who missed it,
I talked about their need to get a right-handed hitting outfielder.
Getting a reliever might be just as important, if not more so.
Because relying on Matt Brash this year to be your,
true setup ace, not a real term, but you know what I'm saying.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The swing man, the guy who is going to get you that ultimate best bridge to Andres
Munoz, I don't know if you can count on that this year.
Like, you're going to have to limit some of his work because of how much time he missed.
And you take a look at these rest of these guys.
Is Colin Snyder a good reliever?
I think so, but he's not a great one.
Is Gabe Spire a good reliever?
I think so, but he's not a great one.
I think you really need to add something else to this bullpen.
and unfortunately, I don't think you can rely on Troy Taylor to be anything more than a mop-up guy.
And I will say down three, I don't think that's mop-up time quite yet.
Okay.
Yeah, I was a little bit curious about that.
I think at that point in the game, you had felt it kind of get away from you a little bit,
the big fifth inning.
It wasn't on top of my list for things that made the Mariners lose this game.
But I like the way you put that.
It's not mop-up territory yet.
You still have a chance to win that game.
I'm with you on that one.
So I think they just need some bullpen depth at this point.
They need COAR.
I don't know if he's supposed to come up at any time soon,
but that's going to be a big leaning on point.
If you're going to leaning on him to come back,
other than that, you need to go get someone.
We're at the point in the season where,
especially with how little the starting pitching has gone deep into games,
you need bullpen depth that you can trust in situations
that aren't necessarily the eighth or ninth.
inning. Yeah. And you know, I'll be interested to see, too, when Gilbert and Kirby come back and
hopefully soon. If you give Emerson Hancock a look and relief, because the stuff has played up
there in the minors at times. He looked great in the futures game performance. Logan Evans looked
like a disaster in the bullpen last year after he made that switch. Do you think about that?
Do you think about making one of those guys a reliever? They've done it with Brandon Garcia and
AA and it has not gone very well so far.
So I'll be really curious to see what they do with those two guys or if they just say,
hey, we got to keep these guys stretched out, knowing that the unbelievable, and I am going
to use the word luck here, pitching luck that they have had in terms of injuries has completely
run out.
Like we've already seen 40% of that rotation be put on the injured list.
So be really curious to see if they consider using one of those two guys when those guys
come back.
and hopefully it's very, very soon as a relief option.
Well, we'll monitor that situation moving forward.
If you want kind of a bigger breakdown on the bigger picture for the Mariners,
be sure to catch Ty and Colby with the Lockdown Mariners podcast tomorrow.
You will see a regular episode.
Once again, those who may have joined the stream late, we're not replacing them.
There's nothing like that going on.
We tried.
We tried.
We begged.
We were no, they're as good as it gets.
And we are super appreciative of them being.
welcoming to us and making this a one of the best teams on this whole network.
Yeah, absolutely.
And so the idea here is Chris and I will be breaking down post game, everything from
the previous Mariners game that we just watched.
And then kind of a bigger picture will be a kind of with the actual lockdown Mariner's
podcast, I should say, with Ty and Kobe will be every single day still.
That will not change.
You will just see more of us.
So hopefully that's a good thing.
We went a little long today.
We had to do introductions and all that fun stuff,
but just expect 15, 20 minutes after the game.
We'll break it all down for you guys.
This has been the Locked on Mariner's Postcast.
Come check us out tomorrow.
It's Max Freed.
Tough match up here.
Max Fried for the Yankees,
but you do have Brian Wool on the mound,
who probably has been your best pitcher in the first part of the season.
So hopefully he pitches perfect,
and the Mariners can find a way to get the dub.
So come visit us tomorrow right after the final pitch, same place.
around the same time depending on how things go.
And again, be sure to check out the Lockdown Mariners podcast releasing at the same time tomorrow.
So we'll see you guys tomorrow.
Thanks again.
Good stuff, dude.
