Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Oh, boy. Well, they tried to lose that game. Both Bizarro and Munoz kind of shaky a little bit there at the end. But the Seattle Mariners win this one, win the second game in the White Sox series. Eight to six is the final score.
Starting point is 00:00:35 Honestly, besides a couple of home runs at the end, the end in garbage time. It wasn't that close, but it could have been a lot worse. But the offense is the real story in this game. George Kirby with the good outing. Julio Rodriguez hits another home run. Cal Raleigh kind of breaks out of a slump a little bit, I want to say. I want to be hopeful in that because he has a big knock in the second inning. Let's see. Who else? Josh Nailer hits a home run for his second consecutive game, an absolute tank. But why is the biggest story from tonight's game? Josh Nailer officially like this base-stealing demon, because that's kind of what it seems like at this point.
Starting point is 00:01:13 He just continues to swipe bags, man. Great baseball player. The vibes continue to roll since the deadline. The Mariners have clinched the series win against the White Sox. Hey, I was happy with two out of three coming into this game, or this series, I should say, because I know the White Soxies can be a pesky team. I think they won two out of three against the Angels in their previous series, I want to say. So this isn't the same team that we faced earlier in the season.
Starting point is 00:01:43 This isn't the same White Sox team as last year either. But this is still a team that you should be pretty easily taking two out of three. Now you have done that and you have a chance to go win the series tomorrow. So Anderson Hurst year, Chris Crawford's taking the night off has to deal with a couple things. I think his wife, I was a little shaky as well. So we'll see him back hopefully tomorrow. It gets all that stuff figured out, wish him well. But I'll be breaking this one down solo dolo today.
Starting point is 00:02:13 What do you guys think? Send me your chats. I'll be looking at a few of them. We'll do a little bit of a section in the show today. First, just some reaction to what you guys are thinking about the Mariners right now. Because it's a fun time to be a Mariner fan. But let's start with the start. George Kirby.
Starting point is 00:02:29 His final line goes six innings. I believe it's nine strikeout. Yes, nine strikeouts, two walks, five hits, two earn runs, you know, wasn't vintage George Kirby. This is kind of just what he's been this year since he's come back from the injured list. I don't know, man, it's weird. I'm having to adjust my expectations for him recently because his command is not the same as it has been years past. But I would say his stuff is slightly better. He's getting more swing and miss.
Starting point is 00:03:08 I think if he figures out that balance just a little bit more, you're going to see a great version of him. Still, what you're getting right now is good stuff. But it's just not the same dynamic, you know, top 10, Syung voting as he was in 2023, George Kirby. You know, it's just what it is right now, but because your offense is going so much. And to be honest, like, for what the White Sox did later in the game, he did everything you needed him to do today.
Starting point is 00:03:38 Six innings, two run ball. I get it. It's against not a good lineup. But it also could have been a lot worse. There were some moments, I believe it was in the third inning where they could have blown it open. He had the bases loaded at that time. That's where he was starting to walk guys a little bit. It's just something I'm not used to saying about George Kirby, but that's just kind of where.
Starting point is 00:04:00 he's at right now. But what do you guys think? George Kirby, good enough today. Is this what you expect from him? If this is what you're getting out of him every time, is that going to be okay for the Mariners? Is that going to be good moving forward? Yeah, Godspeed, I'm kind of with you. Could have been worse. I don't have any gripes, but you still kind of feel like you can accept a little bit more. You can expect a little bit more. Yeah, I agree with you, Agent Michael Skar, and it's his stuff's really good, but he just doesn't have his full command. Yeah, when you see two walks, and I think that's happened a couple times in a row now with George, that's just not something we're used to seeing with him.
Starting point is 00:04:40 But at the end of the day, gets the job done. He gets out of the inning that you absolutely need him to. I believe it was still, the Mariners had scored seven runs by that point. So it was seven to one when he got the base loaded in that third inning. That's where he threw 30 pitches. You're just not used to saying that about him. But let's talk about this offense because that's kind of the big moment about today's game. You know, you get the home run from Josh Naylor.
Starting point is 00:05:07 You get the big hit from Cal Raleigh to kind of break it open a little bit. But I think we got to talk about Julio for a sec because everyone's been talking about it. Second half, Julio's here. And I think that at bat that he had was exactly what makes him so much better in the second half. because I'm looking through his pitch sequencing now. And he gets beat badly by two sliders or sweepers, however you want to see it away. And you could just tell, I was about to say, uh-oh, he's about to get overpowered here. And he gets one, if you're a pitcher, you see him flail at two straight sweepers.
Starting point is 00:05:48 You're throwing another one. It's just what you do. I don't, especially in an 02 count, you just bury that thing away. And it wasn't an awful pitch, but it wasn't. located well by Jonathan Cannon. I keep on to say Jonathan Gannon, the Arizona Cardinals head coach in the NFL, but it's Jonathan Cannon, and boy, was he not good today. He just was not good.
Starting point is 00:06:13 Wasn't located perfectly, but man, Julio deposits that into the left field bleachers. That was destroyed. I think it was 437, 107 or something off the bat. That's the Julio that I know, right? he makes the adjustment he says all right you beat me with two sliders that's why i get three strikes all right it's an oh two oh two count i'm still going to attack and he does that and just an absolute amazing swing from julio uh he gets on with a walk later in the game as well i think he's seen it excellent right now he's seen it excellently i'm not going to talk about how he got
Starting point is 00:06:48 rung up on strike three in his second at bat uh or was it his third third at bat excuse me because that was a terrible call it's one of the worst calls i've seen all year long and uh i'm glad by Chris Crawford is not here to complain about both the umpires and his boy, Julio in one perfect situation for him. So, yeah, because it could get bad, ladies and gentlemen. But I'll save that for next time. And we'll make sure to mention that with him. And if you guys just want to get him absolutely mad,
Starting point is 00:07:19 that's exactly what you're going to do. He's going to go on an absolute tangent. And I'm here for it. I'm honestly here for it. But the Mariners end up getting the dub. Um, what other big moments in this game did we see? Um, I want to talk about Cal, um, because I think there's been a lot of, I don't want to say people worried about him. It's just like, yeah, it's the regression. It's supposed to come. We've, he wasn't going to have one dot OPS it for his entire, uh, uh, season this year. It's just, it's not realistic to expect that from him. But he ends up having a pretty good line today. Uh, one for four. with a strikeout with with a walk though two rbis that single could have been a double if he really wanted to stretch it if they threw home um i think it was a big moment for him uh it's definitely one
Starting point is 00:08:09 of those things that i've noticed with him recently it's not the home runs that aren't getting out that's a little bit the case but for me what's going into his slump right now is uh he's not getting the singles and doubles to fall uh and that's going to be what's the major kind of bringing his numbers down as of late. And that's going to happen. He's not a contact hitter, so speak. And that's one of the things that I was so impressed with with the first part of the season, because he was, even when he wasn't like completely scoring up balls,
Starting point is 00:08:39 getting them out of here, he was hitting for contact. He was driving doubles. He was getting singles in big moments. And it's good to see him kind of get one down again. And in a big moment, it was still only one zero Mariners at that time. So, or two zero, excuse me. So with Josh Nellar's two run, home run in the first inning, yes. But having him kind of open it up a little bit, a two run single with guys on base two outs, by the way.
Starting point is 00:09:07 And then Julio's home run right after that, I think kind of sealed the deal a little bit. We'll talk a little bit about the bullpen today because same thing with Cal for me. You're going to expect some regression from the bullpen as well. I love Andres Munoz. I love Eduardo Bizarro. But it's just, they're not going to be nails every single time they come out. It's just the way it is. It's the way relievers work.
Starting point is 00:09:33 You can look at the Yankees situation now who feel like they thought they built a Super Bowlpen and they are throwing away games left and right. So it's how relievers work. Every single fan base thinks that their relievers are the King viz so much better. It's the way it is. And I get it. He does need to be a little bit sharper. When he doesn't have that slider kind of, you know, located, it's not the same with his fastball.
Starting point is 00:10:01 But he ends up getting the job done. I almost feel like lately with Munoz, it's like he lands maybe one or two pitches. And then he just can't land the third pitch. And then he takes a couple batters to get into it. And then once he does, he gets that first out. It's like, oh, okay, that's what it looks like. And I'm good to go. And that's kind of what happened tonight as well.
Starting point is 00:10:22 What do you guys think? Who's your unsung hero or unsung villain if you want to go that direction? Chris Crawford's out tonight. I'm Anderson Hurst with the Mariners Postcast. We go live right after every single Mariners baseball game. The Mariners take this one eight to six over the Chicago White Sox. Secure the series win. Go for the sweep tomorrow afternoon.
Starting point is 00:10:42 Let's give some love to our sponsors and I'll come back. We'll do some unsung stuff. And then I want to get what your guys's thoughts are. We're going to do a little something a little bit different today. We're going to go through some comments, just kind of have an open conversation about the Seattle Mariners, where we're at. If you want to go a certain direction with it,
Starting point is 00:10:59 I'll include you guys into the conversation after we take a quick break. Today's episode is brought to you by Game Day Hugh, and so is this hat that I'm wearing. It's a Mariners hat, and for Mariners fans like me, this one hits the mark. Game Day Hugh makes clean, no logo gear with team and sparring. wired color ways for every pro and college fan base. It's all about letting your colors speak for you.
Starting point is 00:11:29 No giant logos, just smart, versatile style that works on game day, on the course, or anywhere in between. Yeah, and this is big for me because nothing annoys me more than when I really want to buy some gear for a team and they don't have anything that is, you know, tastefully done. I like the kind of maybe either no logo like Game Day Hugh does or maybe. just a small logo thrown in there on a golf shirt or a hat or something like that. Nice and clean, just the colors. And it's perfect just to whether you're going on kind of a sales meeting,
Starting point is 00:12:06 whether you're walking into work and you still want to support the Mariners, going on a golf trip, anything you want. That's where Game Day Hugh comes in. And right now you can get 15% off with code MLB-15 at GameDayhue.com. That's Game Dayhue.com. The code even stacks on bundle deals. So now is the time to load up. Let your colors talk because colors speak louder than words.
Starting point is 00:12:30 That's gameday hue.com code MLB-15. Ever wish you're managing your money felt easier. With Monarch money, it can. So in addition to managing your money, you're also building wealth. Yeah. And if someone is as disorganized as I am, my wife can attest to that. I need something like monarch money to kind of organize everything. I'm both disorganized and I'm not good about, you know, where to spend my money. And having something like monarch money to just, you know, control, not control, I should say,
Starting point is 00:13:19 keep track of everything. Just that's the perfect description. a personal CFO is so perfect. And that's exactly what Monarch money brings you. Take control of your finances with Monarch money. Use code locked on MLB at Monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. That's monarchmoney.com code locked on MLB for half off your first year. All right.
Starting point is 00:13:47 We're going to get into some chats later right after I give my unsung today. I'm still deciding whether I want to go unsung hero or villain. but yeah we can take a direction anywhere you guys want to go are you worried about cow on conversely is hollio back uh george kirby does he need to be better how did you feel about his start tonight bullpen are you where's your concern level right now because you basically threw out three of your four higher leverage guys three of your five of you include Caleb Ferguson uh and it didn't exactly go swimmingly against a pretty, pretty average or so line. I don't know, average, below average line up, pretty bad lineup.
Starting point is 00:14:32 And the Chicago White Sox, they have been hitting the ball better lately. And they mentioned that on the broadcast today. But yeah, it's just, I want to see a little bit more. But this is where you work out the kinks this time of the season and a win's a win. This is why you build the buffer that you do early in the game. So you can kind of go through these ups and downs with the bullpen. And they're not going to be nails every single time they come out onto the field. So where do you guys feel about that?
Starting point is 00:14:57 But I'm going to go with my unsung hero. And I just mentioned the bullpen. For me, it's got to be Gabe Spire. That dude is awesome. It's a pretty cop-out to go with a reliever in the unsung hero position. You know, you could do Josh Naylor with his stolen bases. You could do Cal Raleigh coming up in his big moment. And everyone kind of points the home runs,
Starting point is 00:15:23 whether it's Josh Naylor's home run or Julio's home run. I still think Cal Raleigh's single could have been a double is the biggest moment in this game, to be honest. That kind of blows it open a little bit. But I'm going to go Gabe Spire because after the Bizarro inning in the seventh, it was questionable whether, you know, okay, now the White Sox are back in this game. He gives up two home runs. One was Michael A. Taylor. Or that was Munoz. Never mind.
Starting point is 00:15:53 I can't remember exactly who hit the home runs. against a bizardo in the seventh inning. I was like, okay, we got to lock this down. It's like the offense hasn't really done much since the second inning. And then you do get the sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to Ehuyenios Suarez, who also could be a shout for Unsung Hero. I know he gets a couple of Ks today.
Starting point is 00:16:14 But that sacrifice fly is a bigger moment in the game than a lot of people realize because it's a two-run game with Munoz there at the end instead of a one-run game if he doesn't do that. So it was a first pitch. You could tell the approach for Suarez there was to just attack, excuse me, was to just attack and get the ball in the outfield and score and run. That's all you needed was to get a little bit of buffer room. So, yeah, it's just you could go either way.
Starting point is 00:16:45 I'm going to go Gabe Spire, though. The dude has been so good this year. They mentioned something about uptick and velocity for him this year, which I have noticed as well. And I think that's why he's been able to get righties out too. He's not just a lefty specialist anymore. And that's huge to have that in your bullpen. And now you do have someone like Caleb Ferguson.
Starting point is 00:17:03 You can start to use Gabe Spire in more higher leverage situations, not just waiting for the lefty to come, right? So I think that's going to be a huge kind of upgrade internally with this bullpen because of the addition of Caleb Ferguson. you can move spire up into a more higher leverage role and maybe use Ferguson to be more of a lefty specialist guy. That's kind of what I would do if I was Dan Wilson. And I think that's kind of the direction they're going at this point in time. But yeah, what do you guys think? What do we feel about Cal right now? I think that's a big kind of question mark. I'm going to leave a few minutes for some
Starting point is 00:17:43 comments to come in. How confident do you feel about the bullpen? I'm going to go bullpen and cow. Those are our two kind of conversation pieces here. Are you worried at all about the bullpen? Do you still have confidence in Munoz as the closer? Matt Brash himself has been pretty shaky recently. Godspeed says give Cal a day off. Yeah, I think he kind of needs something like that. And not like a day off, like D-Hing.
Starting point is 00:18:09 I mean day, day off. You've already won the series. I get you're kind of in go mode right now, trying to chase the Astros and that AOL West. I just don't know. Home run derby curse. Yeah, I don't know about that. The numbers do line up, though.
Starting point is 00:18:24 So I'm going to wait a little bit longer before I give the home run derby curse to Cal. He's been, I think most of July, he was pretty bad as well. He had like a 190 batting average. But we'll see what happens. Ben Garrett says, I'm worried about Dan not sticking up for his guys when I'm starting us over. Yeah, that's something Chris and I have talked about big time. And you saw some bad calls tonight. You saw some extremely bad calls from the umpire.
Starting point is 00:18:54 It's unfortunate that Dan doesn't really like to get mixed up in it. And I get it. You're trying to avoid suspensions. And you just kind of ride the highs and the lows. But sometimes, and again, I understand the thought of, you know, you're if you get blown up after every single bad call a la lu panella and the effect kind of diminishes it i'm not saying that's a bad thing but if you're someone like dan wilson and then you're being quiet you've been even keel and then something in a big moment happens and you
Starting point is 00:19:37 explode that is a massive boost uh to the morale of your guys right that's a big moment's like whoa he doesn't normally do that, right? So I get that that's kind of what he's going for, but you have to actually do it every once in a while. If that's what you are going to do. So I don't know. I hope I wish he did it more. I hope he does it more as we get down the stretch.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Maybe it's a he's waiting for his moment type of situation. But yeah, I just, I don't know if that's who he is. I think he's kind of a buddy, buddy with the umpires. Hopefully, if I'm kind of nicer to them, they give us calls down the road. But I'd rather, instead of just getting the calls, I'd rather like, hey, guys, I got your back. We're fired up. Let's go.
Starting point is 00:20:15 Let's go time. We're in the kind of good part of the season where we need to start chasing down those astros. So, yeah, I don't know. Cow Raleigh. I think today's hit was big for him recently. He's been in a little bit of a slump. He's kind of working his way out of it. He's still getting on base, too.
Starting point is 00:20:38 He's taking his walks. he's just not hitting it out of the park as much. He's not finding those doubles and singles like he has earlier in the season. All right. Anything else you guys want to check out? Ty and Colby did an excellent episode kind of breaking down the series went over the weekend against the Texas Rangers. Once again, my name's Anderson Hurst. I'm your host of the Lockdown Mariners Postcast.
Starting point is 00:21:04 Chris Crawford is out today. He will be back with us tomorrow, I believe. He's fixing up some Wi-Fi stuff. some other things figured out. Wish him well. But yeah, I think sitting Cal for tomorrow is not out of the picture. They usually do a day game after a night game. They usually do Garver catching at least. And then sometimes Cal deaching.
Starting point is 00:21:26 I think I would consider going the full day off for Cal tomorrow. Yeah, Seth Johnson, what's going on with Munoz? What do you guys think? I'm someone who's pretty bullish on Andres Munoz. I've been a big fan of his for a long time, but he's not as dominant now as he was earlier in this season. And I get his usage is down a little bit, which is weird, because normally when you're used a lot,
Starting point is 00:21:51 that's when it starts to kind of dial it back a little bit. Your velocity starts to go down, but it's the opposite. He's had a ton of rest. So I don't know. I just, I hope he kind of figures it out. If he's just going through a mid-season lull, figuring some mechanics out here and there,
Starting point is 00:22:07 I think that's going to be kind of the bigger story moving forward. He just has to get right come the end of the playoff time. Now he says Astros lose. That's huge. The Mariners gain another game on the Houston Astros. Let me check the standings right now. And we'll be standing. I should have had this pulled up.
Starting point is 00:22:25 I'm sorry, guys. As of now, the American League West, Astros hold a two-game lead. That is so attainable, guys. Go get the sweep tomorrow. You can do both good things in terms. of giving Cal a day off, but still going for the win because there's some easy things
Starting point is 00:22:41 you can do with this lineup, right? So let's go. I think it's go time. I'm excited. I want an AOLS. I don't want just a playoff right now. I want the ALS. So yeah, that's where I sit with,
Starting point is 00:22:56 but I guess I should be just pretty happy with any sort of playoff berth, considering it's only happened really once in my adult life. So, all right, really appreciate you guys hanging out with us today. We'll be back to It's a 110 first pitch. Let's double check the probable starters. We got Shane Smith against Logan Gilbert.
Starting point is 00:23:15 A pretty good matchup. St. Smith's a good pitcher. The White Sox can pitch. I know you didn't see the best from Jonathan Cannon the night, but both Shane Smith and who you saw on Monday, they both can pitch. And Logan Gilbert, I have been, similar to George Kirby. I've been really looking forward to kind of seeing
Starting point is 00:23:37 him break out and be the Logan Gilbert that I expect him to be. So I think this is a perfect opportunity for him to do that tomorrow. We'll, and if you go get the sweep and if the Astros lose again, they're a tire fire right now, man. So if that happens, it's full on go mode for the Seattle Mariners. Let's continue to ride the wave. Continue to tune in on the Mariners postcast. If you haven't liked the video already, please do. Really appreciate you guys coming to hang out with us every night. I love breaking down Mariners games for you guys. Chris Crawford will be back with us tomorrow. We'll talk to you guys about, I'd say, 330, 345, maybe 4 o'clock, depending on, or sorry, not 4 o'clock. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, probably 3.30, I'd say, depending on,
Starting point is 00:24:20 you know, how quickly the game goes and everything. So, uh, let's go get this week. Mariners win this one, 8 to 6, George Kirby was good, Julio Homers, Josh Naylor Homers, and Josh Naylor is a good baseball player. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow. Have a good one.
