Anders and Chris breakdown a tough loss for the Seattle Mariners in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. Bryce Miller pitched well, and the Mariners built a 3-0 lead. Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Well, the boys chose quite a game to have an absolute bullpen blow-up, so to speak. So game five it is in Seattle. Friday, might be afternoon, might be evening.
Starting point is 00:00:37 We're still waiting to see on the timing on that, depending on the other ALDS game. We'll update you guys, of course, when that happens. But things just didn't go your way today. It was kind of the inverse of yesterday, to be completely honest. And I'm just going to say it right now. I don't blame Dan Wilson at all on this one. I think most of the decisions he made,
Starting point is 00:00:59 I'll point one out that I don't think had a huge impact on the game that I didn't like. But in terms of the bullpen usage, those are the guys that I wanted in those situations. And it just didn't work out. They were not good. Detroit seemed like they were a little bit more urgent in this one. Of course, it is an elimination game for them. Mariners go up 3-0.
Starting point is 00:01:25 They get a couple opportunities to really put it away, but it ends up not working out. And it's a 9 to 3 loss for the Seattle. Mariner's. I was about to say eight, I forgot they got that last one too. Nine to three loss for the Seattle Mariners in game four of the ALDS. Chris Crawford, initial thoughts on this game. It's just a bummer. It's a bummer that you build a three nothing lead.
Starting point is 00:01:51 It's a bummer that, you know, everything seems to be set up so perfectly for you to just close this out, advance to the ALCS for the first time in 24 years. You know, I saw a lot of people pointing out this has been a pretty. pretty good day in franchise history in the past. Today is the 30th anniversary of Edgar's double. It's the 30th anniversary of that massive comeback against the Blue Jays. Well, that doesn't mean a gosh, gosh darn thing because you absolutely poop the bed today. And it's disappointing. And I totally agree with you, Anders. Today was not about X's and O's. It was Jimmy's and Jose. And your guys just flat out didn't get the job done. Just didn't get the job done. A lot of blame all around.
Starting point is 00:02:34 a lot of blame all around. The offense doesn't score another run after the fourth inning, I believe, and your bullpen just absolutely craters, just freaking craters. And that's disappointing. That's disappointing. The good news is, because you took care of business yesterday, we're not talking about the feudal. This is not the eulogy of the Seattle Mariners.
Starting point is 00:03:01 They get one more shot. They've got to beat a really little. good pitcher for the fourth time this year to do it. But they still get one more shot. So it's not the end all, but it's very disappointing they weren't able to get this done. And it's very disappointing why they weren't able to get this done. Yeah, that's kind of how it conspired or yeah, conspired was conspired. I didn't even try to do that. I promise. So I think one of the only people you can't blame for today. We'll start with. Bryce Miller.
Starting point is 00:03:36 Oh, he's fantastic. It was awesome. I, before we get to the decision to take him out, I just want to point out how good he was. If you were to tell me he would go, what was that, into the fifth inning? Or was it into the fourth inning? No, it was into the fifth inning.
Starting point is 00:03:51 Into the fifth inning, allowing technically that first run is his. But into the fifth inning, starting the fifth inning without allowing a run. Yeah. I think I would have taken that every single day for today, especially giving how many guys you got available in the bullpen. And he was awesome.
Starting point is 00:04:12 I think he was dealing. And I also think it was the right decision to pull him when they did. So I'm curious. Let's start with your evaluation overall of Bryce Miller and then the decision to take him out there in the fifth inning. I thought he was terrific. And I think it's actually kind of crap that he gets charged for one of those runs. If Randy Rosarina is the left fielder next year, I'm going to have a fit.
Starting point is 00:04:34 He has no freaking idea what he's doing out there. None. He's one of the worst left fielder's in baseball. The garbage route that he took, and then what pisses me off is how freaking lazy he looks after the garbage route. I can deal with bad routes. I can't deal with laziness. Randy Rosarina was freaking lazy.
Starting point is 00:04:52 And oh, I'm close to using a different word than freaking. Sorry, already locked on. Garbage, hot garbage, which is so disappointing because Bryce. Miller was so good today. The control and the ability to locate down and up, which is something we just haven't seen from Bryce Miller this year. He was really good, really, really good. And yet, I have no issue taking him out in that situation. He gave you 55 pitches. He's been a guy who has really struggled the second and third time through an order this year. So I have no issues whatsoever with pulling him there. Obviously, in hindsight, it looks like a
Starting point is 00:05:28 horrible mistake because of just how freaking awful Gabe Spire and Edward Bizarro were. But the process there was fine. The results sucked. You know what? But the actual process of pulling Spire there, I had no issue with. But it was really encouraging, and I know nobody wants to look at long-term stuff. It was really encouraging to see this version of Miller, excuse me, because he's an important
Starting point is 00:05:51 part of that team. This was the guy who was their best pitcher in the second half of 2024. It was nice to see maybe not that exact version of that guy, but a semblance of that version of that guy. He pitched terrific and deserved a lot better. So then they go to Gabe Spire for at the time was Parker Meadows into, it was right after Dingle. I have to look up the actual box score for what part of the game that was at.
Starting point is 00:06:19 At first I was thinking, why not go to Bizarro first here and then wait for Spire to get the top of the order with Carpenter and Green. But then I thought about him more, and I was like, well, you know, I just, you probably want Spire for both of those pockets. You need him in the biggest moment. He's the guy I probably trusted the most in that spot.
Starting point is 00:06:40 And I was fine with, again, putting him back out there for, what was that, the sixth inning? And it was, yeah, sixth inning. It was the sixth, yeah. So do you have any qualms with the decision both to lift, put it in this order. Lift Miller, go to Spire, and keep Spire for the top of the sixth inning.
Starting point is 00:07:02 Yes. So this is where I slightly disagree. Here's the thing. I would have gone to Bizarre there. Bizarreta was so freaking garbage that I can't say, oh boy, I'm sure worth being his pitching. He was awful. Like, awful today. Both of them were. Like, they just didn't have their command whatsoever. I mean, those balls were absolutely pissed on. It wasn't like it was.
Starting point is 00:07:24 dink and dunk stuff. They would absolutely shellact those guys. And the big concern is, you know, there's been a lot of study about this. These guys have seen Gabe Spire now for four games. These guys have seen Yorm, or, I always want to call him Yormon. These guys have seen Bizarro for four games now.
Starting point is 00:07:41 You're still going to have to rely on these guys in game five. Have to. Have to. Have to. Have to. But they clearly had a pretty good idea what they were doing at the plate there. I probably wouldn't have let Spire keep going just because of how freaking terrible he looked, though, in that. And, you know, I do happen to remember that Riley Green has homered off of Gabe Spire
Starting point is 00:08:03 this year, that the only home run he had today off of a left-hander coming into today was off of Gabe Spire. So he's the baseball pretty decent against him. That's my only issue with what Dan, well, I have one other freaking issue. Yeah, we'll talk about it in a second. I'm sure it's the same freaking thing. It's the same thing. Luke Wright sucks. I have no issue with anything else. And ultimately it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter because the guy I would have brought in was hot, flaming, wet garbage today. How can you be flaming and wet?
Starting point is 00:08:37 Oh, it's possible if you suck ass like your or Edward Bizarro did today. Holy crap. He had nothing today. He's so lucky that there was an awful base running move to just get him out of that inning for a little bit. just absolute hot flaming, smelly, garbache. It was just awful. It was awful. It was awful.
Starting point is 00:09:00 And it's disappointing because we have sung the praises of him all year and deservedly so. He was so good, so good in these first three games. And so terrible at baseball in this game four. Just terrible. Terrible. It sucks. Yeah. So the only other question I have,
Starting point is 00:09:19 I think we're basically on the same page here. I don't think there was much better than, like, maybe you don't take put Spire out there for the sixth. I still would have wanted a lefty for Carpenter and Green, but, well, you know. Well, but Carpenter's done. He gets Carpenter on a, carpenter hits the hit stick to get Josh Naylor at first base.
Starting point is 00:09:37 And by the way, the one guy you don't want to hit the hit stick on against is probably Josh Naylor at first base. You're not going to win that one, buddy. Did not feel bad for him whatsoever. It was green to. Start at the bottom of the second. And I get it.
Starting point is 00:09:52 But at the same time, you got to watch what you saw there, Daniel. And what you saw there was a guy who just didn't have it today. Right. Didn't have it at all. And now you have burnt pitches for Spire coming into a game five, which is going to be just so freaking pivotal. That's the only reason I would have gone with a fresh reliever there. But I get it. I also, I can't say it's like the worst decision in the world.
Starting point is 00:10:16 And it doesn't matter because both guys sucked. And it doesn't matter. I just look at it like if you had put Pizarro in to face green and the same thing happens, which we saw what Pizarrodo looked like the same thing probably would have happened. Then we're saying the same thing. Like, why are you putting in a Ritey to face Riley Green who is so much better as Riders? So like I think both you're kind of you're damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. So hard to blame Dan Wilson. This is just the guys executing today.
Starting point is 00:10:43 It's been out of the bullpen. They just weren't good. And two guys that you have been able to rely upon all year long. So, I mean, it's tough to say that's just baseball, but sometimes that's what happens. And I think you made a really good point. This is like the third time. I think they've seen both Spire and Bizarro in the series. And guys, this is what happens when you have a longer series.
Starting point is 00:11:03 Your face guys more often, you start to time up their pitches. You could see what their sequencing looks like a little bit. So that's just something that that's why having just good dudes instead of guys that maybe fool guys a little bit, maybe not with the stuff as much. and that's kind of what I feel like with Gabe Spire. It ends up being the case. That's what happens in a little bit longer of a series. Last question before we moved to the second half of the show.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Any thoughts? I saw some people, and I was trying to think of a good way to explain this, but I want you to kind of help me out here. With just one more game in the series and a possible only one more game left in the season, is there any thought to use like a George Kirby out of the bullpen or a Luis Castillo out of the bullpen in those situations? No, not with it. If you're starting a clean inning, sure, I would absolutely think about going there.
Starting point is 00:11:51 Not with runners on. It's so hard. There's a mentality there. And you're going to need both of those guys. I think both Castillo and Kirby are going to have to be guys who pitch multiple endings for you in game five. You have to think about it. I know you want to manage to win this game. And also managing to win this game, putting George Kirby in in a high leverage situation.
Starting point is 00:12:13 Let me stop you right there. Anyone ask for Emerson Hancock? No. No, God, no. You're not going to Emerson Hancock in that situation. You're not going to Carlos Vargas in that situation. No, you went with your best and your best got beat. It sucks. It sucks. But that was absolutely the right decision. It just didn't work out today. Totally agree. Let's talk about the offense a little bit. There was a couple moments. I mean, you scored three runs early in the game. It looked like things were kind of humming along. And then one big, uh, oof, inning happens. And, uh, you don't really get much for the rest. of this game. We'll talk about a couple of performances that stand out to us here on the Mariners Postcast.
Starting point is 00:12:51 Don't go anywhere. What do you get when you have a bald eagle standing on top of a silverback gorilla riding a T-Rex? Man, that's a strong T-Rex. If that's the case. Confidence, pure confidence. If you're looking for something

Welcome back to Mariners, Postcast, Anderson Harris, Chris Crawford with you. Mariners lose this one, nine to three in game four of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers. It seemed like early on the Mariners were rolling. They looked like they were ready to close this out and have a couple days rest to wait
Starting point is 00:15:19 for who they might have faced in the ALCS. Hold your horses, says Detroit, because they are not battling out of this yet. and honestly, but I know some Mariners postcast, credit to them. Sure. Totally credit to them. I don't think that, I know we kind of view things in Mariners scope a little bit. This feels less of it in terms of X as a nose.
Starting point is 00:15:41 I know you didn't execute with your relievers, but this feels less of a Mariners lost this game and more of the Detroit Tigers just took advantage of what was given to you. I would agree. I would agree. I think that the Detroit Tigers absolutely were. A team that was kind of due for an offensive game like this. They were a pretty darn good offense before September. And, you know, Zach McKinstry, who has just been wretched in the postseason, was due for a good game.
Starting point is 00:16:09 Riley Green has finally his game. I literally saw, I was reading the comments, which is a terrible thing to do, never do that. But I was looking at the Tigers lineup. And I saw several Detroit fans asking, why is Zach McIntyre in the lineup and why is Riley Green in the lineup? I mean, everybody panics at this time, right? And to be fair, Riley Green has been atrocious coming into there. Atrocious.
Starting point is 00:16:33 But that's what's scary, right? Like good baseball players, you know, go through lulls and go through highs and go through lows. And usually the lows are followed by highs. And today, you know, he takes advantage of a just dreadful game spire pitch. Tigers were good today. The tigers were good today. And what I keep coming back to, Anders, and I meant to mention this in my opening soliloquy, for lack of a better term, that.
Starting point is 00:16:54 Hang. should have won Saturday. Should have won Saturday and today doesn't happen. And Friday doesn't have to happen either, which is, oof. Yep. They have a task in front of them now. It's going to be monumental, going to get scoble. Now we've seen them do it before.
Starting point is 00:17:12 We'll leave the kind of preview episode to Ty and Colby for tomorrow. Please tune into them. But let's react to today's game. Early on, you get some good stuff from Cal Raleigh hits a pitch in or hits a single end. I think it was Randy that scored at that point. Dom Canzon singles, Victor Robles, even though it should have been more rounds into a double play.
Starting point is 00:17:37 Let's talk about that fourth inning because I think that's going to be one of the things that we think about from today, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Tyler Holton comes into replace Casey Meis, which I'm like, why are they taking out Casey Meis? He's looked pretty dang good at this point, even though the Mariners at that point were up one zero. I was very surprised to see them kind of go to that point.
Starting point is 00:18:02 Josh Naylor singles, Ehueño Suarez singles. Then you bring in, oh, excuse me, I'm looking at the, no, that's the right one. Yes. A. Eugenio Suarez singles, you bring in Mitch Garver for Dom Kanzon. We'll talk about that decision here in a quick second. He walks and then they bring in Finn again. again and for Robles with the bases loaded nobody out and Victor Robles grounds into a double play guys for everyone that's obsessed with putting the ball in play. Yeah there you go.
Starting point is 00:18:34 This is one of those situations where I would have rather Victor Robles struck out. Okay. I realize he scores the run and there's a slight chance that you don't get that later, but you gave yourself one less opportunity. And by the way, if you had gotten a single from J.P. Crawford or an extra at bat that you get without having the double play, you would have scored two that have run, right? And then gets to the top of the line. It's just there's so many things that a double play in that situation really, really hurts you. You get bases loaded, nobody out and score one run. Chris, were you happy at that point to get the run? No, no. It was a disaster to only get one run in that situation. And, you know, looking back on it now,
Starting point is 00:19:17 you lose by six. So you can't just say, hey, that's the reason they lose. But you had a chance to put this game away. absolute chance to put this game away. And, you know, Robles does walk twice in this game, but he's got to be my unsung villain for this one because, holy crap, that was just an awful, awful result to get the double play there. And, you know, unfortunately, J.P. Crawford doesn't get the hit there. He goes over two with runners in scoring position after having such a good game there. I do want to point out that Mitch Garver had a really good at bat before that, too,
Starting point is 00:19:50 to draw that walk. I had no issues pinch hitting there. I'm not using Dom Kanzone against the lefty guys. I'm just not having said that. If I see Luke Rayleigh make another abat for this Seattle Mariner team in the postseason, I'm going to call for Dan Wilson's job because it's malpractice. It's absolute malpractice. This guy sucks.
Starting point is 00:20:09 He's a bad baseball player right now. He helped you at times in 2025. He really helped you at times in 2024. He's worthless baseball player. He's not a good defensive player. He's speed is fine. His ability to lay down a bunt because he's a freaking idiot and because he doesn't mind getting hit in the ding-dong by anything that could come near him.
Starting point is 00:20:28 That's the only thing he can do right now. He's garbage. He's hot garbage. As much as everyone here hates Mitch Garver, and I mean hates Mitch Garver. Mitch Garber is substantially better at the sport of baseball right now than Luke Rayleigh. Absolutely a huge mistake to pinch hit Luke Rayleigh. There is too much Montgomery Burns managing, from Dan Wilson, where he just says it's called playing the percentages and bringing in a lefty
Starting point is 00:20:54 for a righty, full crap. It doesn't matter if he's left-handed, right-handed, switch-handed. He can stand in the middle of the frickin' play. He's not going to do anything with it because he sucks. Luke Rayleigh sucks. And Luke Rayleigh should not get another at bat for the Seattle Mariners in 2025. He's garbage. He's garbage. I don't care if he hasn't played, by the way, at all. Even bigger, dumb-ass decision then to bring him in. Why are you using a guy who it doesn't have the ability to hit whether or not he's played a lot or not. Horrible, horrible decision from Dan Wilson. It's the only one that I can truly say, as much as I didn't love Spire starting six,
Starting point is 00:21:31 the only one I can truly say, this is stupid, is Luke Rayleigh hitting for anyone right now. Let freaking George Kirby come up to bat over this guy right now. He sucks. Yeah, I just want to say, number one, totally agree with the sentiment that Luke Rayley sucks and he should not take another bad. Number two, I would have even taken if it meant throwing away one of Dom-Can zones at bats because you want to keep him in the game, burning him. Like, I would have been fine with three Dom-Can zone at Bats other than one Dom-Can zone,
Starting point is 00:22:06 one Mitch Garver, and then one Luke Rayleigh. If that's what the alternative is, that that's fine. I would agree with that. I had no issue with going to Garver in that situation. Yeah. But keep Garver in the game. Yeah. Keep Garber in the game there.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Just not what you did. No, there you go, exactly. And again, this is a small thing. It doesn't make you lose this game. You lost this game because your bullpen didn't execute. But again, these are domino effect moments that you don't know what can happen. If someone else comes through, it just, it sucks. It sucks that the Mariners drop this one.
Starting point is 00:22:40 Little things happen like this. And that's, I agree. If that's about the only time I can point to a Dan Wilson decision that I don't love. So that will be my unsung villain because usually when we, I don't know, when we evaluate bad decisions, it's usually a sung villain situation. It's an unsung villain situation for me with Dan Wilson today because of that decision. So hopefully they kind of figure it out that he can't hit right now. Period. And I'm fine with a pinch runner, but that is. Yes. Yeah. If he's got to run, he's got to run, man. He is such a,
Starting point is 00:23:15 he is a good athlete. He is a good athlete. And Luke Rayleigh has had success. And it won't be shocked if Luke Rayleigh helps somebody next year. I kind of doubt that it's Seattle based on how the roster is built right now. He just isn't good enough right now. He stinks. It's okay.
Starting point is 00:23:31 It's okay to say he stinks, guys. He's not the reason they lost. But I can crash you out over watching Luke Rayleigh have zero shot in the batters box right now. It sucks. Yep, absolutely sucks. Mariners lose this one, nine to three. we're having a game five of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers back in Seattle on Friday. Terrick Scoobel versus I don't even think the Mariners have announced who they're throwing out there.
Starting point is 00:23:55 They could throw Castillo out there if they really wanted to. They could also do George Kirby. I think it's going to be fascinating to see who they decide to start because you could make an argument for either one. Well, I know George ends up giving up the two-run homer, but he was fantastic outside of that. and more of an issue for Wilson, not lifting Kirby in that situation, right? What I would probably do, and this is Dian Colby territory, I understand.
Starting point is 00:24:21 I would probably go to Castillo for three, and then I would go to Kirby for three, and then rely on the high leverage guys. That's what I would probably do. And what you did today? Yeah, yeah. It's just... Really quick, Chris Crawford,
Starting point is 00:24:34 because I know we're already short on time, and I want to make sure I get your thoughts on this. Why isn't that double-challengeable down the line? Oh, because the ball makes contact before it lands. So there is, if it would have just been a line drive that goes over into that section, then it's a challengeable play. If it makes contact before. Oh, and the honest reason why is because MLB is a stupid organization and that they just, and the MLBPA is one of the most powerful unions in sports for better or worse. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:09 Was it a fair ball? No, no, it was clearly a foul ball, clearly a foul ball. But it's not because it bounced outside. It has because it bounced in the field. It has where it goes over third base, correct? Correct. So, and if they would have been able to challenge it and look at it, that ball was foul.
Starting point is 00:25:27 It was clearly a foul ball. But because it's not challengeable because of where it landed in the first, or where it started its end trajectory, it sounds like NASA when I'm talking about. Yeah, no, I know what you mean. Yeah, it's. And most people, most people, Most people pointing out like, oh, that bounced three feet outside the line.
Starting point is 00:25:44 That's not where that is determined. It's because it bounced before the base in the infield. It depends on where it crosses, like on a vertical line above third base. But even though that was the case, that was still fell. You still the foul ball. Yes. All right. I want to get your thoughts on that.
Starting point is 00:25:59 I know, again, these are small things where when you lose by six runs, it's like, okay, is that the reason why you lost this game?
