Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to the Mariners Postcast Anderson Hurst here. Mariners dropped this one to lose the series to the athletics. They are now 10 and 15 on the early season. Can't blame this one on the manager. Let's talk about it on the Mariners Postcast. This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network.
Starting point is 00:00:28 Your team every day. Oh, boy, guys. Yeah. tough, tough one for the Mariners today. They drop the second game of the series against the athletics. They lose five to two. Luis Castillo was just okay. He's your fourth or fifth starter.
Starting point is 00:00:51 He was fine. You know, going five innings, two runs against a decent lineup in the athletics, not the issue tonight. Still not good enough, but, you know, that's not the reason why you lost this game. The offense just looks lost, man. It continues to be one step forward and two step. back with this offense. And the weird thing is, once again, you get three on base and two hits from both Cal and Julio, but almost no one else does anything. And the early part of the season, it was everyone but the middle of the order hitting. And right now, it's only the middle of the
Starting point is 00:01:26 order hitting. And you can take away Josh Naler from this specific game because, boy, he was bad. And a couple of bats there. I just, I don't know where to go from here, guys. They're playing bad baseball. It's can't really explain it other than that. I went on a big rant about Dan Wilson last night and his decision making. He did nothing tonight to, you know, lose this game, quote unquote, for the Mariners. This is the players. This is on the players right now. They're, they're not playing well enough. And maybe you can say a little bit coaches, uh, as well, because I feel like the approach at the plate needs to be fixed. You get, you have a starter in Jacob Lope. who is one of the highest walk rates in major league baseball.
Starting point is 00:02:12 It throws a 90 mile an hour fastball, and you're still going up hacking away, giving him quick outs. I mean, God, it just seems like there's no plan when you go up there. I don't understand how that's the case with these hitters. It's bad. And you're pitching while good, not, I mean, including tonight. I think pitching was fine and just not,
Starting point is 00:02:42 not to the elite status that we expect it to be. And you're not going to be carried by this pitching staff. That was the big kind of factor coming into this year was, would this pitching staff be elite like it was in 2024 and for parts of 2025? It hasn't been elite. It's just not to that top tier, top echelon pitching staff in Major League Baseball. That's not the reason why you're losing games, but if you're relying on that, it's not happening that way either.
Starting point is 00:03:14 I mean, Luis Castillo, like we said, he's a four or five starter, and he's giving you four or five starter stuff. And, you know, five innings two run baseball. I take that every single time from my fourth or fifth starter. So, I mean, you just need better. You need better. It sucks. I mean, I myself complained about Bizarro not coming in yesterday.
Starting point is 00:03:36 and he comes in and gives up the home run to take the lead for the athletics and they never look back. Shea Lange Liers is a great player. You might hit 50 home runs. There might be a catcher in the American League that hits 50 home runs in two straight years. One, Cal Raleigh last year and two, Shaney Lange Lures this year because that dude can mash. Yeah, let's get into this one. There's not a lot in terms of like big moments in the game. I mean, you get the Soderstrom double in the first inning.
Starting point is 00:04:06 gets them the lead after the Nick Kurtz walk. It's just a good hit. He did it again later on in the game against Bizarro, too. Josh Nader does get the sack fly in the third inning to tie it up on one. That was a good sequence because Cal Raleigh gets on base. Then Julio Rodriguez has a nice little ground ball doubled through the left side of the infield to kind of move Cal over. and then Josh Nader hits the sack flies. So that's a nice get him on, get them over and get it in moment for this offense,
Starting point is 00:04:42 but it's not good enough. There's not enough production up and down the lineup. We were used to seeing, you know, Dom Kanzone, Luke Rayleigh dominate. And frankly, they weren't in the lineup today because the Mariners can't hit against left hand of pitching. Them being able to do anything against one of the, I'm not going to call them one of the worst. left-handed pitchers in the game. But if you look at all the starters that are listed in Major League Baseball right now, I'd say he's down there.
Starting point is 00:05:11 He's down there as one of the guys he should be mashing. And they just didn't do a good enough job of that today. They got one solo homework from Cal, which is good to see. Good to see him starting to break out a little bit. Julio gets on base three times, two singles, though. He's still not driving the baseball like I wanted to. This is a very early season, Julio, but I'd still take, you know, his performance today, uh, getting on base three times, two singles and a walk.
Starting point is 00:05:33 That's good stuff from your three hitter. No one else does anything offensively. Rob Reff-Snyder is just not it, unfortunately. And they can't hit left-handed pitching. I'm sorry, it's just the way it is. Let's come back on the other side of the break. Talk about Luis Castillo's start, and then we'll kind of look a little bit bigger picture from here.
Starting point is 00:05:57 We're on the Mariners Postcast. I'm Anderson Hurst. We go live after every single Mariner baseball game. Mariners lose this one, five to two. That's why the confetti craze five-hour energy shop brings that nostalgic flavor back in a whole new way. This is that classic taste you remember, but with a tasty caffeine boost and zero sugar.
Starting point is 00:07:30 It's all quick, easy way to satisfy, you know, sweet craving while keeping things simple. and on the go. You get a nice little taste of, you know, the birthday cake flavor. Then you get some caffeine and you get no sugar. It's a win, win, win situation. I like how convenient it is, super small, just a quick little boost and you're good to go. None of this coffee stuff and like trying to figure out a way to, you know, take it on the go or anything like that. I like it when I'm playing golf, to be honest. It's just a small portable shot. I can grab whenever I need a little pick me up. It's a go-to when I want something sweet without going overboard. The fun fetee, excuse me, flavor is back at 5-hourenergy.com or Amazon.
Starting point is 00:08:13 Crack open the confetti craze five-hour energy shot today. Welcome back, Mariner's Postcast, Anderson Hurst with you. Let me know your thoughts on the games, guys. I might not go super long tonight. It's just not a ton in this one. They're just not playing good baseball right now. There's moments in this game that just make me want to scream. I think the biggest one, not the biggest one,
Starting point is 00:08:41 but one that stands out to me more than anything else, is in the third inning where, you know, that's, you do get a run. You got, sorry, sorry, not the third inning. I'm thinking about the fifth inning, my fault. You got the Rob Reff Snyder fly out to center field, excuse me. Then you got the Cowellie Home Run, and then Julio singles on a ground ball.
Starting point is 00:09:07 And then Josh Neither pops out, and then Randy a Rose and Randi Grounds out. You got this guy on the ropes, and you just, you get a couple nice hits, but the patience just isn't there from a guy that just has not given up, has not thrown strikes all year long.
Starting point is 00:09:27 It's been something that's been frustrating for me for a long time. It just, he has not had to start, Jacob Lopez is for the athletics. He is not how to start this year, where he gave up less than three walks. He has given up three or more walks in every single start this year. The Mariners today against him had two. So this was his first start giving up less than three walks.
Starting point is 00:09:51 And that just kind of tells you where these guys are at right now. I feel like they're trying to hit their way out of the slump a little bit. And it's just that's not the way to go about it. I know you want to be aggressive. I know that their way of kind of doing things is by hitting the long ball. And that really hasn't been. there for them in the early portion of this season, they need to have the more pass the baton, do your job, let the next guy kind of hit me in sort of mentality. And that isn't to say that you
Starting point is 00:10:21 have to have eight singles in a row to score runs. That's not what I'm saying. It's just if the pitch isn't there to hit, if the pitch isn't there to drive, you can still be thinking about driving the baseball, looking for the home run and all that stuff. That's what they're going to do to score runs. but if it's not there, don't go fishing for it, man. Josh Naylor is one of the perfect culprits of it right now. I just feel like he's never been a huge walk guy, but it just seems like he chases way too much and in bad situations. And Randy even had one tonight where I was like, dude, you got two straight walks
Starting point is 00:10:58 and this guy can't find the strike zone. And you're literally swinging first pitch with two guys on base. I just, oh, that, it was so frustrating to watch. It's a tough one for Seattle. The A's, they're a good team. I know not only with the offense, I mentioned one step forward, two steps back. It seems like that with the whole team right now because they had a good series against Texas. And I think that's going to be one of the main teams battling for that top division spot.
Starting point is 00:11:31 But you're coming against the athletics who have a bad pitching staff, straight up, bad pitching staff and you look anemic on the offensive side of the ball. It just seems so easy to get Mariner hitters out right now. If you can deal with Cal and Julio, you'll be able to kind of handle the lineup. It's it's the way to, especially if you're a left-handed pitcher because you're not going to be facing Luke Rayleigh or Dom Canzone. So I don't know how you fix it. I'm not, I don't even know what the plan is moving forward because I don't think playing Canzone. and Rayleigh against left-handed pitching is going to be that, you know, big of a deal or big of a, you know, fix for this team moving forward. But it just, it just seems like there need a little pick-me-up.
Starting point is 00:12:19 And I honestly don't know where that comes from. The vibes don't look great right now either. And it's been a while since I mentioned the defense because they haven't really been in a position where they need to make defensive plays to win baseball games. But that reared its ugly head again today, too. J.P. Crawford had a couple awful throws from shortstop. Josh Schneler made it look okay and saved him a couple errors on that. But dude, it's bad. Cole Young as well, just a noodle arm throw from second base to first.
Starting point is 00:12:48 He can get to the ball. He is a good range. But there's just zero arm strength in this infield right now. So there's a lot of holes right now, guys. And I don't know if they're going to fix it right away. I don't know what the urgency level is in the clubhouse. It doesn't seem like it's that high to be completely honest. honest, which disappoints me.
Starting point is 00:13:08 And I hope that I'm wrong. I really hope that I'm wrong on that because winning these games now matters just as much as winning games in August and September. And you've heard the whole adage, the old adage, excuse me, that, you know, they all count the same, right? These are all games that are going to count towards your record towards the end of the year. And even though I get it, I think Dan Wilson does a good job of playing the long game in
Starting point is 00:13:33 terms of, you know, giving a guy's long leash, long leashes to kind of get their games right. He did it last year with Jorge Polanco. That's a great example. He started off pretty okay, actually really good. And then he had a really bad stretch in May. And then he was great for the rest of the season. He left him that long leash. It's like, hey, I'm going to put you out there every single day.
Starting point is 00:13:56 And I'm going to let you go hit the baseball and do your job. And Polanco ended up being one of the mayor's most important players. So I get their thought process here. It's just frustrating to watch in April. So I just, I don't know where that comes from. I don't know if that comes from up top with Topoto, Hollander, those guys. I don't know if there's a bench coach on there that needs to get them going.
Starting point is 00:14:16 I just, I know Edgar Martinez and Kevin Sizer are revered for their hitting approach and the way they kind of turned things around last year. Feels like a lot of it was built on Cal Raleigh hitting 60 home runs, to be completely honest. And the hitting approach now does not look very good. Crawford's still trying to be a home run hitter and he's just not at all. You're not. You're an on-based guy. Just lean into that.
Starting point is 00:14:41 Stop trying to hit the ball over the fence. And I know he's done it a couple times, but stop doing that. So I just don't know, man. We'll see it ends up happening. Maybe an aggressive trade early in the season that the Mariners normally don't do. They like to wait until the trade deadline. But that's a discussion for another day. And maybe Ty and Colby will talk about that.
Starting point is 00:14:58 You can catch them on the Lockdown Mariners podcast. Every single day tomorrow. I'm sure they'll talk about this game. They'll talk about, you know, what fixes need to be made. You know, maybe Colt Emerson being called up is the answer. They keep kind of teasing that, but it still hasn't happened yet. And I don't think he's ready either. He's still not mashing at AAA.
Starting point is 00:15:16 But we'll see what ends up happening. You need to get this one tomorrow. I know it's not for a series win, but you can't get swept again in division. You've already had that once with Texas in Texas. So you need to get at least one and stop. like kind of dilly dally in here because 10 and 15 guys um that's that's not a very good record i know like you can kind of throw records out the door in the first part of the season in terms of like you know teams that actually end up making the playoffs but these games matter and i have a feeling
Starting point is 00:15:48 like these types of games when you look in september and early october when the mariners are battling for a playoffs box i still believe they will be like games like this are going to be ones where we're like okay what if they had won that one what if they had shown up in this game. And, you know, I wouldn't put this in the category that you deserve to win this game because I just didn't. This is definitely in one of those, you know, you win, you win 50, you lose 50. And it's, you know, it's the other 60 that end up, you know, making, making the difference. But this, this is the one where it just feels like they need to, they need to, they need to kick in the butt, honestly, without a better word for it, they need to kick in the butt. Hopefully that
Starting point is 00:16:31 tomorrow 1-10 first pitch I'll be these guys post game I'll probably be at the KJR studios but we'll we'll chat with you guys a little bit right after the game then hopefully I'm I'm in a little bit better of a mood but I'm tired now guys there's just there's not a lot in this in this team right now that excites me hopefully that's we're singing a different tune tomorrow we'll talk to guys then have a good one go Mariners
