This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Oh no, we suck again.
Who gets that reference?
Yeah, I mean, that's a little overblown.
Whatever it is about bad weather,
the Mariners tend to not play good baseball games.
When either in rain,
rain delays or what probably should be a rain delay.
But that's not the reason why the Mariners lost today.
They had opportunities to win this one on both sides of the ball.
And they are unable to do, you know, what the Tigers did.
And that's get a hit with runners in scoring position to put the game away.
And it's been kind of a little bit of a kryptonite for the Mariners in this,
entire season, to be completely honest.
But sometimes they can get away with that when they hit the long ball.
And that's what they were doing during their winning streak.
And all of a sudden when that, you know, you're in a ballpark that is not conducive
to home runs in Comerica Park in Detroit.
So you're going to need to string some hits together.
And they did that for their first run, which is good to see.
Can't blame Rob Refs Snyder.
He gets two hits today, including an RBI to make it 1-0.
But then after that, the at-bats against Framber Valdez just, I mean, I won't say they were awful at bats because that would indicate they weren't working counts.
They get him out pretty early.
He only gets through five innings.
And then you see the bullpen and you actually have a couple opportunities.
But again, when you have the opportunity to kind of really get a chunk of runs, whether that's a guy, bases juiced or a guy on second or whatever it is, the Mariners tend to have their worst.
bats of the day. And then when they have no one on base and they're down by four runs,
that's when you get the double from Josh Nader or the double from Randy or Rose Arena.
And it just, unfortunately, they can't get the big one. And, you know, some of that's luck.
Some of that is approach. But it's hard to really call it luck when you've seen it all year long.
So I don't understand what the offense, you know, if you look at the source, you know, if you look at
the surface numbers today. The Mariners get 11 hits. There's what, one, two, three guys with
multiple hits. And then everyone but Patrick Wisdom and Dom Kanzone and Victor Robles
slash Luke Rayleigh end up getting a hit today. So in terms of the surface level numbers,
the offense actually did some work, but it's always in the moments where you need a hit that the
Mariners can't get it. So hopefully I can start to figure that out. Let's start with the start
with Brian Wu. He was good, but it wasn't great today. And that's fine, usually. Tough at bat
to carry Carpenter who just continues, continues to just be a menace to Mariners pitching. And after
you take the one zero lead, you know, in the Tigers half of the third inning,
You get two outs pretty quickly.
Actually, sorry, you get Zach short and then Glavitoris singles,
Kevin McGonigal singles, and then you get the bloop to center field from Dylan Dingler.
I don't know why Julio's playing so deep in that situation either.
He should be able to get to that ball.
I don't know why he's starting so far back.
and then Kerry Carpenter hits the home run after that to kind of make it 3-1.
And it was just a bad bitch.
Who knows it.
And unfortunately, it's just it put the Mariners in a hole early.
But that wasn't, you know, necessarily, it wasn't out of reach at that point.
But the way the Mariners at Bats were going, they were, you know, working some traffic.
Josh Naylor gets a single and literally the next half inning.
Rob Ref-Snyder singles as well to make it first and second, nobody else.
And then you get Mitch Garver, Cole Young, and Victor Robles all with just pathetic at bats.
And that was a common theme tonight.
You're able to get some foot traffic on the base pads.
And then you weren't able to necessarily get them in.
But I'm kind of getting ahead of myself, talking about Brian Wu here.
He was good, not great.
He shouldn't have been out for the seventh inning.
Normally what happens in these situations is I realize he only had eight.
83 pitches.
But he was good against the, you know, the Tigers lineup.
He was basically everyone by Kerry Carpenter.
He looked pretty good against.
But it's not like he looked like, oh, my God, we can't take this guy out of this game.
And that's usually the kind of vibe you have to get in order to pull him from the seventh
inning personally.
That's for me.
Because it's the third time through the order.
Everyone has those stats.
and I realize it's just the new age of baseball now,
but you saw exactly why that that is the case with a lot of these starting pitchers.
So I don't, he wasn't dominant, but he only had 83 pitches.
It's not a super egregious decision.
The egregious decision from Dan Wilson in that situation was to go to Edward Bizarro.
Like, it's your fifth best reliever.
That's base is loaded and you're down by a run.
I, that was questionable.
to me. I just don't. I know usually you want to save your high, high, high leverage guys for when
you have a lead or maybe if it's tied, going into later parts of the game. But, man, I am tired
to say, you're down to your fifth guy. I would have loved to see Brash in that moment. Brash is, you know,
notoriously the type of guy who, you know, when they come in with bases loaded are people on base,
right? I feel like Bizarro's better with, in a clean inning, similar with Gabe Spire, similar
with Jose Ferreira, right? Brash is the type of guy that comes in and puts out the fire. He's the fireman.
I don't know why you're not going to him in that situation. Maybe he's not available. Maybe we're
going to hear from Dan Wilson and hear that, you know, for whatever reason, they're resting him tonight,
but that made too much sense to me to go to Matt Brash. And it's not like if you, if you
end up not coming back that you don't have arms to use. You just had a day off, number one.
Number two, you have Munoz Bizarro, if you don't use him there.
Jose Ferrer gave Spire, all to use instead. But you needed to get that out of those two outs in that
situation. So two kind of mistakes there, in my opinion, of leaving Wu-in for the seventh,
who had a good day again, but not great.
And then Phil felt like the perfect time just to cut it off after six innings of three-run baseball.
But you tried to get more out of it.
And you end up getting a big hit from Glaver Torres, who I've always liked.
He takes really good at bats.
That kind of put the game, I don't want to say, out of reach,
because then the Mariners end up getting a solo shot from Colt Emerson later in the game.
So it's, I don't know, man.
Actually, sorry, Colt Emerson homered before that to make it three, two.
And then you get Mitch Garver in the eighth inning singles on a pop fly to right field that should have been caught.
I don't know why, what happened there.
And it's interesting not to see.
Just the Mariners get bapipped to death because right after that Cole Young singles on the bloopiest of bloopers that just goes over the shortstop's head.
But then again, so you have, you know, what is that, first and second and one out, I believe at that point.
Luke Rayley comes in, awful at bat, and Colt Emerson drowns out.
So another missed opportunity for the Mariner's offense.
It's just, it was too much of a common theme tonight.
And I realize you're not going to win every single game, right?
The eight-game winning streak was, it was never going to last super long.
and dropping that last one to the Mets in that series, you know, it was okay.
You still won the series, right?
And you can kind of get the off day and kind of get back on it.
But all of a sudden, the Mariners have lost two straight games.
And they're looking more like the team they were before that eight game wing streak as opposed to during it.
So they need to get back on the horse.
I'm a big believer in momentum, especially in baseball.
And especially with the Mariners in baseball, I think with,
you know, different teams.
They, they ride the highs and lows of the season a little bit more even keel.
The Mariners, when they're playing well, they look fantastic.
The gap between them playing well and them not playing well is just too great, unfortunately.
So they need to get back to the point where they can kind of gain some momentum and get back on the horse and get things going again.
Then you bring in Alex Hoppe after you don't take advantage.
and he just wasn't good.
Wasn't good at all.
And another situation where, you know,
I would have liked to see someone different.
See, that would have been where I bring in Bizarro.
So maybe you do Brash in the first instance,
and then you bring him Bizarro in the second instance,
and you're talking about a completely different game,
and maybe you have a better chance later on in the game to make something happen.
But, you know, Riley Green singles and then Spencer Torrance.
Orkisland hits a home run after a hanging slider.
And that put the game out of reach at that point.
So tough one for the Mariners.
They lose this one to the Detroit Tiger 7 to 3.
They fought a 33 and 31 on the season.
And they come back tomorrow with Bryce Miller on the mound.
So it'll be interesting to see kind of what that looks like with a full start for
Bryce Miller for the first time.
Let's take a quick break to our unsung hero and then preview tomorrow's matchup.
here on the Mariners Postcast.
The NBA playoffs are here.
The NBA finals are here and every possession matters.
If you're looking to get even closer to the action,
Fandual has a great offer to get you started.
Right now, new customers can bet just $5 and get $150 in bonus bets if your first bet wins.
That's right.
Turn five bucks into $150 in bonus bets just for getting started.
I like using Fandle during the playoffs because everything I need is right there in one place.
You can check stats, trends, and matchups before making.
your picks, which makes the whole experience feel a lot more informed, and they give all the
information right there for you, whether you're looking at player props or just following your
favorite stars, it adds another level of excitement to every single game. It's a super easy
app to navigate to, and it makes playoff basketball even that much more engaging from start
to finish. For me, I'd check out the futures look, and it's not a basketball bet,
but check out Colt Emerson Rookie of the Year futures odds. I feel
like you can get it at a pretty good value right now. I haven't checked specifically what it is right now,
but I know for a fact he's not in the top five as of right now. So, and I feel like that you definitely
is going to start climbing here in the next maybe week or so because he just continues to do good
things. Head to fendool.com to get started. Fandual play your game. Welcome back. Mariner's
postcast myself, Anderson Hurst, with you guys. Mariners lose this one seven.
three against the Detroit Tigers.
They just can't get the big hit.
The tigers in multiple instances when they had guys on base were able to get either
a gapper like Glaver Torres or a home run like Spencer Torkelson.
So it's just that's the difference of the game, straight up.
Unfortunately, you know, you pitch decent, especially with Brian Wu, leave him out maybe a little
too long and then you go to your, you know, second or third option.
And unfortunately, when that happens, and you're facing a team that's hot right now, the Tigers,
they're going to take advantage of you.
So unfortunately, the Mariners drop this one.
They go to 33 and 31 on the season.
I got one unsung hero and one unsung villain for you guys.
First, it's not my unsung hero, but I want to shout out, Colt Emerson.
I'm going to continue to give this guy props because you get two strikeouts today, but it hits the long ball to kind of bring the Mariners within one.
it was kind of a big moment in this game because it felt like after the, you know,
tigers got that two-run shot, the offense wasn't working.
And then all of a sudden you get a home run from Colt Emerson and it's a one-run game.
So good to see once again the bottom of the order.
I'm interested to see how long he's going to stay at the bottom of the order because I wouldn't put him near the top,
but I put him in the seven, six-seven range right now because I want him getting a couple more at
bats. But you don't want to screw with it too much. What he's doing, I think, is working well.
It's not putting a ton of pressure on him right now. You kind of seen what happened to Cole Young
since he's moved up in the order, slightly less effective in the last couple weeks. So
it's obviously, it's a different animal, but, you know, having the pressure on you facing,
you know, better pitchers when you're higher up in the order. So I think as of now, he's okay.
but if he continues to do what he's been doing lately,
I wouldn't be opposed to moving him up in the order
just to see him get a couple more A-Bs here and there.
My unsung hero for today, a couple good options.
I'm going to go with Julio personally
because normally when we talk about Mariners not coming through
in runners and runners,
scoring position clutch situations, it seemingly always is attached to Julio rightly or wrongly.
That was not the case today.
He was always the one kind of starting the run and kind of getting things going, which is
where I think his role is best as, to be completely honest, that's why I've always liked him
as a lead off hitter personally.
I like him kind of getting things going instead of having the guy, having to be the guy
to hit them in, you know what I mean?
So, but he gets two hits in a walk today.
He continues to be consistent offensively, which is something that I really like to see,
especially at this point in the season.
If he can kind of keep this as his baseline and then have the July, August, September
that we're used to seeing from him, he'll be in the MVP conversation with, especially
with Aaron Judge going down.
It's just, it's what he does.
So hopefully, like I said, that's a big.
gift. Because when we say, oh, you know, Summer Julio is here, that's such a high expectation to bring
on someone who, for the vast majority of the season, is, you know, a good player, but not that
elite. And then all of a sudden, every single time, he turns into just, he catches fire
at that point in the year. Just expecting that from him is a little bit, I think, ahead of our
skis, but if he can, because he has done it in the past, because of his baseline is so much
higher than where it has been in years past, he's going to have some, he's going to have some
shouts to win ALMBP this year.
So hopefully, and that's another part of that is if his defense improves because that's a
thing that makes his value as high and it hasn't been nearly as good this year in center
field.
So a couple things to ask of him, but also saying that the way he's playing,
offensively right now is a pleasant surprise for me.
Unsung villain.
I know he gets two hits today and a walk.
He also gets two hits and, you know, gets on base.
But a couple of bats with Josh Nailer with running and scoring,
runners in scoring position, man.
They were pretty bad.
I'm not going to give him the unsung villain, though.
I'm probably going to give it to, let's say, Patrick Wisdom,
O for three with a K.
I know he comes in for JP and kind of it wasn't ready to be a part of the team today.
You could give a shout to Mitch Garver too because he really doesn't, I don't say deserve credit because, you know,
he ends up getting the hit to score a run, but it shouldn't have been a hit.
It should have been caught.
It would have been probably a sack fly anyway.
But I want to see Johnny Parada.
It's one of those situations where these two guys are probably battling for the backup catcher position.
Oh, other on Sun Hiro, I totally forget.
got to mention this guy, Rob Raff Schneider, who's gotten a lot of flack, but he does end up getting
two hits today. And, you know, good for him. One of them was an RBI and one of the few guys who
did come through with runners in scoring position in the first inning. And then he started the
rally that didn't end up turn into anything. I believe it was in the fourth inning. Yes.
when you get the first two guys on base,
Josh Naylor and Rob Reff Snyder,
and then you get three straight outs after that.
So quick shout out to Rob Reff Snyder.
I know there's still a lot of him.
Maybe he shouldn't be on this roster right now,
but he does his job today.
So good for him.
I'm going to give him a quick shout out.
We'll be back with you guys tomorrow.
Mariners have Bryce Miller going on the mound.
They're going against Cater Montero.
Finally a righty starter.
So maybe this is one of the other.
offense kind of picks it up again. Hopefully, they kind of get, you know, things back,
get the momentum back a little bit, and they can kind of move on from there. Mariner's dropped this one,
seven to three against the Detroit Tigers, lose the first game of the series. Go win tomorrow's
game and you have a chance to win. What is that, your fourth straight series at that point.
So we'll talk to you after tomorrow's game, day game, 10 o'clock a.m. Actually, morning game,
really, for those on the West Coast, 10 o'clock a.m. Pacific time. So we'll,
We'll talk to you after that one.
Let's turn it around.
You lost a little momentum.
We can easily get it right back with a win tomorrow.
We'll talk to you after the game.
Go, Mary.
