Starting point is 00:00:01 Welcome to the Mariners Postcast. The Mariners lose their fourth straight game and still are finding ways to not score runs. It's a tough one. We're going to break it all down here on the Mariners Postcast. This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the locked on podcast network. Your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:32 What is going on, Mariner fans? I see a lot of you in the chat. saying hi to Chris, say hello to Chris. For those of you who don't know, Chris Crawford is no longer going to be doing Mariner Postcast with us, at least for the time being. So I will be going solo. And he left me quite a game to go solo on in terms of, you know, hopefully this thing gets turned around because I don't see it really happening right anytime soon because,
Starting point is 00:01:00 boy, the Texas Rangers seem to have the Mariners number right now. That's their, what, fourth straight win over the Mariners. It's the Mariners' fourth straight loss overall after getting swept by the San Diego Padres. And if you take out the four-game sweep of the Houston Astros, the Mariners are four and 13 on the year, guys. The Mariners are four and 13 without that Houston Astros sweep. So I don't know, man. I'm finding a tough way to find positives in this game. It's not like your entire lineup did nothing today.
Starting point is 00:01:33 You had okay days from Josh Naylor, which is good to see. uh cole young gets on base three times you're finding yourself kind of allergic to scoring runs and it's they just keep finding ways to lose games whether it's on saturday in san diego uh sorry uh tuesday in san diego uh wednesday wednesday in cio the second game i keep them having things mixed up but you have the seven run lead or the six run lead and then uh then the five run lead in the ninth inning and you end up losing that game uh it's tough right now guys the Mariners are fighting it right now. And I'm curious what you guys thought of this one because I struggle to find a lot of positives with this team right now.
Starting point is 00:02:17 Logan Gilbert was pretty good today. Still not the efficiency we want to see from him. A couple tough pitches and tough spots. But, you know, he exits the game in the sixth inning. It's just, I don't know. The couple big moments that I want to mention, guys, is, first of all, in the bottom of the first inning, offensively. We'll get to Logan Gilbert's overall outing in a second here. I want to talk about the two big moments in this game.
Starting point is 00:02:50 Bottom of the first inning, Cal walks, Julio doubles, Nailer walks. I believe it was Brendan Donovan, who actually either grounded out or struck out at the top of the order. and then you have bases loaded with one out and Randy strikes out and really strikes out. And God, that was a huge opportunity there. It seems like they've had a lot of those this year. I know the memes with the Mariners and their inability to get things with the bases loaded is, it's there. I see a lot of them on the social media websites and such. But I actually don't think that was the biggest moment in this game.
Starting point is 00:03:28 The biggest moment in this game was the bottom of the sixth inning. The Mariners are down to zero at this point. Logan Gilbert gets out of the third inning, even though he probably should have given up more runs. Bottom six, Nader's single, gets him on base. And then there's a couple other outs. I forget where they come from. But Nailor ends up on second base, two outs.
Starting point is 00:03:51 JP hits a single, and it's two zero at this point, guys. And my God, Christopher Nogroen sends, Josh Naylor, one of the slowest players in baseball, from a weak, hit-it-it-the-other-way single from J.P. Crawford, when you're not even down by one or a tie game, he sends him home with two outs, and honestly, at that point, it kind of shut everything out. It's just so bad.
Starting point is 00:04:27 the there they're there whether it's dan wilson making decisions whether it is you know the third base coach making decisions whether it's kind of lazy defense that i notice a lot of the times with these guys j like the the the pop out in the bermuda triangle that erin goldsmith called it um it just feels like jp crawford should have gotten that ball um it just i don't know there's so many ways that this team is losing baseball games right now. And I apologize. I just found out it's Carlos Cardoza, who is now the third base coach. My fault. It was Negrowing last year. It doesn't matter. Third base coach sent him in a terrible situation. There are, there's zero things that in that in that situation that indicated that you should be sending Josh Nader. It's a slow runner.
Starting point is 00:05:19 It's a good left fielder that has a strong arm in Wyatt Langford. It was, you're not even down by one run. can sort of understand it if you want to be aggressive and it's like okay it's the tying run it's not it's not the tying run the tying run is jp crawford and you just ended the inning and then uh it just kind of all went downhill from there so i just don't see a lot of good baseball being played right now with these guys um let's move over to the start with logan gilbert uh his final line tonight actually looks okay. He goes 5.1, 7 hits is not ideal. Two runs, both earn one walk, 7Ks, and the home run to Brandon Nimmo.
Starting point is 00:06:03 This is a very 2025 Logan Gilbert start for me because his stuff actually looked really good for a lot of this game. And whether it was his splitter or change up, they mentioned it on the broadcast and I hadn't thought about it this way. It just seems like he has kind of two different. speeds. Even though he has like six pitches, he basically has two different speeds. It's the fastball and cutter. And then it's the change up slider curveball splitter that are all very similar speeds at that point. And yes, they all move differently. I understand that. But as a header, if you can just zone in on two
Starting point is 00:06:42 different speeds, that can help you so much when you're trying to narrow it down in terms of your approach at the plate. And I think that. That has a lot to do with the fact that he just can't keep putting it away, whether it's, you know, taking four extra pitches to get a strikeout or maybe issuing an extra walk because guys are fighting off his pitches there. I just, I don't know where that can change. Maybe you, you know, we saw this with Munoz when he was good before he kind of fell off the last couple days. He took a couple miles per hour off his slider. Maybe that's something that you can, you know, work with a little bit. I'm not sure.
Starting point is 00:07:24 But it just seems like he has two different speeds. And hitters have an easy time kind of once they see the spin. They're not going to make hard contact and they're not with him, which is one of the reasons why he's actually still doing okay. And the results are fine. But his efficiency is not very good. He's getting into the sixth inning and it's kind of capped at that at that point. And it's so much different than the Logan Gilbert we were used to seeing in 2024,
Starting point is 00:07:49 where he led the majors in innings pitched. And he was extremely efficient, getting lots of strikeouts. And that's the kind of ace like Logan Gilbert that I was hoping to see coming into this year. So tough one for the Mariners tonight. It's their fourth straight loss. What are you guys' thoughts? What's your worry meter with the Mariners right now? We'll kind of check in with those.
Starting point is 00:08:13 We'll do our unsung hero in a second. But I just wanted to give a quick shout out once again, Chris Crawford. guys have been tuning in the last couple days really appreciate him filling in for me he's stepping away from the postcast uh he's been awesome it's been such a good time with him so i'm gonna be riding solo here with you guys uh for the remainder of this season at least uh unless you know something else happens but i want to hang out with you guys let me know what uh what you guys thoughts are in this game because it's it's becoming tough to evaluate at this point i at what point does it not become early is my question to you guys so um let's uh let's talk about that here in the
Starting point is 00:08:52 next segment uh we'll come back with the mariners postcast here on locked on mariners we will be right back mlb season is back and you can feel it fresh starts big expectations and that first crack of the bat whether it's a breakout rookie or division race that goes down to the wire there's nothing like being in the ballpark for it the only problem is getting tickets and that can feel like a grind. Starting point is 00:09:41 included in the price you see, which is the price you pay, period. That's the biggest thing for me. me so many times you can be looking for tickets and then you have an idea of how much you want to spend and then you should pick out the seat do you want and then next thing you know it's 20 bucks more because all the fees that get added on what you see in game time is what you get you can even get zone deals which lets you pick the section you want to sit in and then save even more while game time selects the exact seat so uh it's two taps and it's done no stress no hidden fees just great seats in minutes that's what makes it so easy to decide last minute to hit game. Download the GameTime app today. The NHO playoffs are here where every shift matters. Every moment is intense and the pressure is at its highest. I'm a cracking fan. They're not in the playoffs. I really wish they were were, but it just, it's the NHL playoffs are one of my favorite sports playoffs. So I'm going for the Buffalo Sabres this year. First time in like 14 years, it would be great for them to kind of get things done. As a Mariner fan, who knows what it's like to go through those types of droughts, I feel a little
Starting point is 00:11:08 bit of a kinship with the Buffalo Sabres fanhood. And just like performance matters on the ice, it matters off the ice too. And that's where Ruggiat comes in. Ruggiat performance medicine for men. Welcome back. Mariner's postcast. Marriers dropped this one 5 to 0 to the Texas Rangers.
Starting point is 00:12:07 They lose more ground in the AL West race. Move to 8 and 13 on the season. And as I mentioned earlier, it just, besides that four games with the Houston Astros, where Houston could not throw over a strike. And you took advantage of it.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Like, don't give you wrong. They took advantage of it. The Mariners are four and 13 this year. And I get it. It's only April 17th. So hard to draw any conclusions. But man, the start of the season has been bad.
Starting point is 00:12:34 And we've seen some bad starts with Mariner baseball over the years. So how worried are you guys? I'm starting to ramp up my worry meter because while there were some signs in the first couple weeks of this season that, you know, made me feel like this team was getting out of it a little bit. Lately, they are finding ways to lose baseball games. And it's not the, like, ways that are super fixable either. It's bad defense.
Starting point is 00:13:03 They don't have enough defenders, guys. They just don't. Even Julio Rodriguez, who I think is a fantastic center fielder. He has a weird read on a ball that I feel like he would have caught last year. You're finding just ways to lose baseball games. and Brennan Donovan gets hurt for the second time already. I thought he comes. He gets traded to Seattle,
Starting point is 00:13:25 barely been injured in his career, and all of a sudden he has two injuries and an illness in the first four weeks of the season. I just, I don't know, man. There's a lot of bad luck involved, I will say, as well. I'm not going to be that guy and say that I expect positive regression because I don't at this point. But there's a lot of bad luck.
Starting point is 00:13:45 There were a lot of soft contact today with the Rangers. They get 14 hits. Not all of those were earned. And it feels like every time the Mariners are in that situation, they're not getting those hits. I mean, you look at Rob Ref Schneider, who still does not have hit, have a hit in 2026. He absolutely destroyed a ball and it goes right to someone. And it's just like, okay, that's kind of how things are going right now. But they're not doing the right things either.
Starting point is 00:14:10 Right. So when you're both kind of getting unlucky and not doing the little things right, like base running, defense, and situational hitting. that's a recipe for bad baseball. And that's exactly what we have right now. I want to take a couple positives from this game. I feel like offensively, I want to separate a couple things because, yes, I completely agree that the Mariners need to get better
Starting point is 00:14:36 at situational hitting and runners in scoring position and all that jazz, right? But I do like the way they battled against Jacob de Grom today. They got him out really early, drove up his pitch, count. And I think they were mentioning on the broadcast right when it happened. It's like, okay, even though it was two zero at that point, you felt like you were in a good position to kind of take advantage of a bullpen. It's kind of what they did in the Houston series too. Obviously, different level of pitching staff. But when you get into the bullpen before the fifth inning or during the fifth inning, that's when you feel like, okay, let's get it going here. We have an
Starting point is 00:15:15 opportunity to score some runs. And then they just, they got away from what was working in the first few innings, right? And I don't think that who the Rangers threw out there, Collier, Alexander Beeks. Now, Collier, actually, he was nasty, I will say. That dude had a sweeper that was going somewhere. Tyler Alexander, Beeks, Cole Wynn, and Lats, like, those aren't guys you should be having that much issues with, but Collier looked nasty. But compare that to the Grom, and you're battling up there going through multi, lots of, you know, pitch isn't in at bat, and you get him out in the fifth inning, and you feel like you can kind of take a little exhale because you don't have to face Jacob de Grom anymore, and then you take, you go away from
Starting point is 00:16:00 what was being successful. And I get it. It's hard to game plan for relievers, because you don't know who is going to come up in what situation and stuff like that versus you can prepare for a starter. But it seems like the offensive. approach all of a sudden change they were like all right now in the bullpen let's let's swing away and uh you not get patient not battle and uh you know foul off tough pitches and stuff like that and it just it just seems like the approach is kind of going out the door in that moment um although having josh neither get two hits today and two walks um so he gets on base four times uh is a big development um so he'll be my unsung hero.
Starting point is 00:16:43 Pretty easy one for me because you need him to get going. And I feel like, you know, Cal and Julio have, you know, still gone through it a little bit here in the last few days. Julio does get that double in the first inning. Hope, I wish they would have brought him into score. Cow goes 0 for three with a walk. So he gets on base once as well. But it's still not to the point where we expect with those guys.
Starting point is 00:17:11 So having all three of them being bad is one thing. If you can just get one or two of them going, that would be so helpful to this offense. Because you're getting decent performances from the, from the Luke Rayleigh's. No, Luke Rayleigh at a bad day. But Luke Rayleigh, Cole Young's definitely coming back down to Earth a little bit, but good to see him get on base three times. And Brendan Donovan, but guys, Brendan Donovan got injured. I have to wait and see what Dan Wilson says about that.
Starting point is 00:17:37 So if you guys see anything, please let me know in the chat. but we'll kind of wait and see what that is because it kind of came out of nowhere. He gets the double play. I believe it was in the third inning. Yeah, it was the third inning. And all of a sudden, it's Leo Rivas that's playing in the fourth inning. And we're like, wait, what's going on there? So that would be tough.
Starting point is 00:17:58 That would be a tough one for Seattle. Hopefully they can come back tomorrow, get this one back. It is a 415 game tomorrow. So keep that in mind. it's also a national TV game, so no Mariners TV and all that jazz. It's on Fox. So you need to break the street, guys. It needs to happen now.
Starting point is 00:18:18 For me, it's getting late to be early. And, you know, a good kind of break out of the funk a little bit. Because I still feel like even though you do get the four-game sweep at the Astros just two series ago, their managers are still in this funk because I can kind of put that one as an outlier now. They need to get out of it against a good pitching staff like the Rangers. And it's a good time to do that. All right. We'll talk to you guys tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:18:40 4.15 starts, so maybe around 7 o'clock for the postcast. Hopefully it's a better result. We'll talk to you guys then. Have a good one. Go, Mariner.
