I would like to personally thank Dan Wilson because you know how boring it would be if your team just won the games it was supposed to and then, you know, lost the games it wasn't supposed to.
You got to give him something a little bit, right?
And you know how boring this season would be if I didn't get to rant about Dan Wilson ever?
If I talked about him nicely three days in a row, we don't get that tonight, guys.
We definitely don't get that tonight.
Mariners lose.
Welcome to the Mariners Postcast.
This is the Mariners Postcast.
Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Guys, not all losses are created equal, okay?
There are some where it feels like, you know, you just get outplayed.
And your players don't show up for whatever reason.
You feel like the roster construction isn't there.
Or you just feel like maybe injuries are bogging you down a little bit.
And then there are days like today where you feel like you should win, you go up 3-0,
your offense all of a sudden after you go up 3-0, just decides, you know what,
we got this game in the bag.
I'm going to take selfish at bats and try and pad my stats.
Look, I'm not in the mind of any of these guys, but that's kind of what it seemed like to me,
watching the game from, you know, inning one to inning nine.
But then your manager just decides, you know what, we don't care about actually winning this
game. If we luck into a win, great. We want to keep our guys fresh. And we'll get into that
because I don't know, man, it just feels like this is another Dan Wilson disaster class.
There were two massive decisions, and I'm actually going to put this as the poll today,
which decision was worse from Dan Wilson. Number one was pulling Luke Rayleigh versus the lefty
in the sixth inning for Rob Reff Snyder.
And then number two is putting like Casey Legamina in the seventh.
So I'm going to show that on the screen now.
Put one in the chat if you think the Luke Rayleigh decision or polling Luke Rayleigh
for Rob Reff Snyder was worse.
But number two, if you think Casey Legamina was the worst decision.
You can make an argument for either one.
We're not even going to look at the other side here, to be completely honest.
Because both of these decisions were absolutely horrific.
and it is two of the main reasons you lost this game.
Before we get to that, well, you guys are voting.
Let's start with the star with Emerson Hancock.
Look pretty good through the first couple endings.
But they talked about it on the broadcast,
and Ryan Walton Smith made a good point about it
kind of early on before he started to give up the solo shots.
He wasn't getting anything to his left side.
Emerson Hancock's glove side, they say,
because he's a right-handed pitcher getting it to the left side.
And, you know, this new arm.
slot that they've been talking about. It's been effective for him getting to the top of the zone with the
forcing fastball and the sinker specifically. But when you are unable to work the left and right
side of the plate, that's when it becomes very predictable as a header. And this A's lineup is decent,
has some really good hitters. Nick Kurtz is a problem. And, you know, they're going to mash.
Shane Langaleers might have a very good season as a catcher also this year, right after Cal Raleigh did
it last year, they're going to match.
They're going to take advantage when you can't work different sides of the plate.
And when you're a kind of sidearm pitcher, you need to be able to work both sides of the
plate.
And Hancock did, you know, he was able to do that in his first few starts.
And that's why he was so effective.
He was working the sweeper to that kind of backside of the lefties and then away from
the righties.
He wasn't able to do that today.
For whatever reason, he wasn't finishing his pitches or he was trying to
overthrow them and put too much spin and it was going right side every single time.
And you can just zone in on the pitch.
You know, so that's, he does, he is not without fault in today's loss.
He is the reason it became tied.
And he didn't have a good start today.
I know the numbers don't look awful in his final line.
He goes five innings, seven hits, three runs, all earned three Ks, all three home runs.
but they're just they're very i don't want to say easy fixes but it's like it's mistakes you can't make
at this level too much middle middle and it's what happens when you're kind of fiddling around with
the new arm slot i'm not saying he won't be fine next time out but we're reminded today that this is
kind of what makes emerson hancock a back end of the rotation type of starter he's not anywhere
close to being your ace uh and he's not even more close to being your best pitcher okay so
um you know he'll be fine i'm not
worried about him long term. He'll fix that. But it was a mechanical thing that was easy for the
ace to jump on today. Let's go right to the bullpen decisions. We'll talk about the offense
of the second half of the show today. First, let's do pulling Luke Rayleigh versus the lefty and
the sixth inning. Look, I am as big of a proponent and understanding of the platoon situation
as there is in this game. I realize that Luke
Rayleigh in his career has been unable to hit versus left-hand pitching.
I don't even think it's a bad idea in process to kind of think more often than not,
I don't want Luke Rayleigh hitting versus lefties as much as we possibly can.
But let me point out, it just seems like it's so easy right now for managers to kind of
puppeteer Dan Wilson into doing things that we all expect him to do.
And then because they can do that, they can now play the rest of the game with a much,
a far inferior hitter and Rob Reff Snyder for the rest of the game.
And you can kind of play off of that.
And it just feels like he's he's behind.
Dan Wilson is behind the game when it comes to this stuff.
Number one, I don't even think that being.
the sixth inning versus being later in the game is that big of a deal into why I wouldn't
have pinch hit for Luke Rayleigh there. The fact of the matter is there was no one on base and the
game was still tied. I understand that you're looking to take the lead, but it's the sixth inning.
Randy had just struck out and it just seemed like there was no momentum that it wasn't like
a high leverage at bat versus what was going on there.
There was no one on base.
Like, just leave Luke in there.
You give them at least one more at bat.
Make them burn the lefty.
And then if they do it again later on in the game,
that's when you use the Rob Ref Snyder.
But then if not,
it forces them to kind of think about things a little bit differently
later on in the game.
It wasn't a high leverage at bat at all.
I would have pinch hit Luke for Luke Rayleigh
if it were a high leverage at bat.
It absolutely was not.
There was no one on base.
There was one out.
The game was tied in the sixth inning.
Okay.
I actually think this decision, if it were my choice,
this decision is worse than the Casey Legamino one in the seventh inning.
I realized that the leg amina one had more of a, you know,
this is why your team lost the game.
But this decision is a far worse decision in process than in the result.
And that's the bigger issue for me.
Because more often than not, if you go by the right process,
you're going to get the right results.
To the Legamina decision, look, I mean, you burned Brash earlier in the game.
I talked positively about using Brash earlier in the game yesterday
because I felt like that was the higher leverage spot today.
It wasn't today.
Sorry, it was the higher leverage spot yesterday.
It wasn't today.
But that's not even that big of a deal.
I don't hate using Brash when they used him.
in the in the seventh inning there or the sixth inning excuse me but leg amina man it just
oh the big question mark is using bizardo there and and they mentioned on the broadcast
that he had pitched three in the last five days yes okay i understand that and i realize it's
april 20th at this point but two of those three outings
he had 11 pitches it's not like he had he had 20 in the most previous outing but he also didn't
pitch yesterday so those are two ticks in the he should be available category for me and he has one
tick and he should not be available category in the fact that he pitched three the last five days
so i would have gone with bizardo there in that situation i absolutely would have and if this was
their test to see if leg amina could be you know a kind of middle to semi high leverage guy he
absolutely failed because he just isn't isn't it he isn't it guys he is not it um he's been okay
in his low leverage spots to begin the year absolutely not in this situation today it number one
he has a very similar delivery to hancock i think one of the reasons one of the underrated
parts of this is when you bring in a bullpen guy you want to kind of switch up the view or
or switch up, that type of pitcher that you're bringing in to give the hitters who have they been
preparing for that starter for, you know, all day.
And, you know, that's kind of who they've been thinking about their approach, how they're
going to go against Emerson Hancock.
Legamine has a very similar arm angle, has a very similar pitch mix as Emerson Hancock.
Bazaar is completely different.
And that's where an even more of a reason why you should have gone to Bizarre
of let alone the fact that he's a better pitcher, right? So I just don't understand that one at all.
And it shows that Dan Wilson slash the Mariners. You can think if you think that's more of a Jerry
Depoto decision than a Dan Wilson decision, go right ahead. I choose to believe that this is the
manager of the Seattle Mariners making these decisions. It goes to show you that Dan Wilson right
now, his number one priority is not winning baseball games. It's not. If it was, if his, if his
his number one priority was winning this baseball game tonight,
he would have gone to Edward Brizardo in that situation.
And he didn't do that.
He wants to keep his guys fresh, which, again,
if you look at the process,
that can play out to some positive things later on in the year.
I understand that.
But it was just a terrible decision.
And I can't say it any better than Mr. Taylor-Twellman.
What are we doing?
What are we doing?
What are we doing?
What are we doing?
Yeah, I can't say it any better than that.
So bad decision all the way around.
I still think the pulling Luke Grayley in the sixth inning with no one on base,
knowing that that person is going to get another at bat,
and it's so easy to put Ref Snyder right on right.
And I realize, again, if you look specifically at the splits,
Luke Rayleigh is worse versus lefties than Ref Snyder is versus righties.
I still would rather give Luke Grayley one more opportunity to hit if that's what they give to him.
So that's my take on that.
Let's talk about the offense, though, because they're not void of any fault today either.
They had a good start to the game, but definitely not the overall effort that we have been seeing the last few days for this Mariners offense.
It just seems like as soon as they got that three run lead, they kind of mailed it in and were not taking the same at bats as they were earlier in the game.
We'll talk about that here on the Mariners Postcast.
Mariners dropped this one six to four to the athletics of Sacramento, whatever.
But we'll talk more about it here next on the Mariners Postcast.

Welcome back to the Mariners Postcast, Anderson Hurst here.
Mariners dropped this one, six to four against the athletics of Sacramento, question mark.
They go to 10 and 14 on the season.
And clearly that doesn't matter to them, guys,
because if they cared about their record at this point in the year,
this situation that we have with Legamina would not have happened today.
But it wasn't just Dan Wilson's decision to go to Legamina in the seventh that lost this game.
It wasn't just Emerson Hancock earlier in the game that gave up the three-run lead.
This offense, it should have been 6-7-0 by the time the A's got their first run in the game, guys.
I realize you have some positives.
Look, Julio gets two hits.
He looks good today.
A couple good hard-hit balls.
Nailer gets three hits and Cal Raleigh hits the home run.
Like it's weird that we've been just waiting for these three guys to get going.
Julio, Cal and Josh Nailer, and they do today.
But for whatever reason, the rest of the lineup, Canzone looks good, I will say.
Other than that, not much else going on.
And it wasn't just the individual side of things.
I realize you can just get caught looking at box scores and feel like, all right,
how the offense look today?
And you can look at a couple of the good outings that people had today.
it's the team approach, guys.
And we talked about this the last couple days,
and that's what made Seattle look that much better
and give me more confidence,
was the team approach to at-bats.
And you saw a little bit of it in the ninth inning
when the Mariners were down kind of desperate a little bit
in backs against the wall,
battling to come back from a three-run deficit.
But, guys, once they got the three-run lead,
it almost felt like, oh, this pitcher doesn't look like he has it today.
we got this in the bag emerson hancock let's go i'm just going to look to pad my stats and just swing
at everything not take any pitches and oh my god it's it looked so much different than the mariners
of the last few days and it's against a far inferior pitching staff guys this is why it's so
frustrating the rangers are a much better pitching staff than the aes today and the mariners
made them look worse it i don't understand how that happened
but you could tell that as soon as the,
I believe the third run was,
who was the third run?
I believe that was,
Dom Canzon's Homer, yeah, to make it 3-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, it's like,
all right, cool, we got this game in the bag.
There was no battle whatsoever.
There was no, hey, we're going to look to put the pressure on these guys
and put the nail on the cough and none of that.
So the offense, once again, I wasn't impressed.
I was not impressed at all today.
I know you get good outings from individuals, but that's not what this is all about guys.
It's about the team approach.
And that's where I think this team needs to thrive.
They need to walk more.
They need to battle at the plate more.
These outs with one or two pitches, pitches seen as I think a huge stat that a lot of people overlook.
When you're being overly aggressive and grounding out or striking out on three pitches without, you know,
fouling off a bunch or taking your walk, stuff like that.
That's where this offense becomes very, very bad, in my opinion.
So hopefully they find a way to turn it around tomorrow.
Another 640 start on a Tuesday.
We'll see what ends up happening because I really hope they get a little talking to
from Dana Wilson tonight.
But again, I just don't know if wins and losses right now are what's most important
to them.
You got Luis Castillo going tomorrow.
It would be a great time for a bounce back outing from him.
versus Jacob Lopez a lefty, so be ready to see more Rob Reffsander guys and no look really because it is a left-handed pitcher.
So, again, I'm not against platoons, but it's starting to get a little bit ugly in terms of how easy it is to manipulate Dan Wilson into making these decisions.
We'll talk to you guys tomorrow.
640 first pitch.
Go Mariners.
I'm tired.
