This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Well, it was fun for one night. One night of Grand Mariners Baseball since I've come back to the postcast. But unfortunately, they weren't able to follow it up. The Mariners lose today, 4 to 2 to the Cincinnati Reds. They move back to 500 at 50.

51 and 51 on the season. Chase Burns continues to just be lights out. He's 12 and 1 on the season. He has a 2.42 ERA, and he showed why today against the Mariners offense. Luis Castillo was good, not great, but, you know, not exactly the moment that you lost this game. It wasn't because of Luis Castillo. Yes, he could have been better a couple times, but a couple solo shots and a sack

fly getting through seven innings. We'll absolutely get the job done. It should get the job done more often than not. So unfortunately, it's just the offense once again. It always feels like one step forward, one step back with these guys. And that's exactly what their record shows. That's why they're 51 and 51. They show the signs of a good baseball team mostly over the weekend.

And then yesterday, for the most part, for sure. And then you get a couple big moments in the game with opportunity against a pretty bad Cincinnati Reds bullpen and you aren't able to get it done. So Cal Raleigh kind of, he gets the Grand Slam yesterday. Yes, he gets a walk to keep the ending going, but he should have had something else before that because he just missed an absolute cookie down the middle. But gets on base. I will never fall to a guy from getting on base. We'll go through that whole kind of sequence a little bit later on in the show. Let's start with the start, Luis Castillo.

Against his former team and was good. Pretty good, I will say. It's kind of the phrasing I will use on that one. Look, again, if you give up a couple solo shots and then a sacrifice fly, but you get through seven innings, that's absolutely, A, it's a quality start by the definition of it. it, right? But B, the seven innings is what's key there. And his length has been an issue this year. So keeping your team in it while only having to cover two innings of a bullpen is absolutely the case. And we'll get to those two innings of bullpen in the second.

He was working the two-seamer, and I like how he's used more of the change-up as of late. I think that's been a key to him really looking better the last few weeks. So that's going to be something where either A, you're showcasing into trade or B, you know, if he's going to be on this team, he's going to need to play a role. He's going to need to be an important part, whether that is starting or that is in the bullpen down the line. But overall, I think, you know, he looks way more confident now than he was earlier in this season. And it seemed like he wasn't, for whatever reason, confident in his stuff, getting by hitters. And now he feels like he can just throw it. And yes, he's not going to blow you away with a lot of that stuff.

But he's not going to blow up in his own starts, so to speak. So a good start from Luis Castillo. He's not the reason you lost this game. It was the offense. Julio doesn't start the game. So let's get to that offense. He doesn't start the game, but then comes in and hits a home run. And I do have a little bit of a question mark here because, well, if he's good enough to play, he should be playing, right?

We're past the point of being able to keep guys out for precautionary reasons and then use them late in a game in a pinch hitting situation. And that's the other part about this that I'm going to start to get into here. Yes, the offense was bad. Just too many times where they don't know. great let me put it in this frame first chase burns is really dang good like i read you his stats he's 12 and 1 on the season for a reason um he's a fantastic pitcher with a really bright future and the reds have locked him up good for them good for him as well um but there needs to be some sort of approach and

usually with the mariners when they struggle uh against these high-end pitchers it's due to them either being a little too aggressive or missing mistake pitches. And it was more the latter. They were missing mistake pitches today. Yes, Chase Burns has probably the second best or third best fastball in the game behind Jacob Mizurowski. They showed his average fastball Velo. It's not just the VLO. It's the RPMs as well.

The spin he gets on it is crazy. It gives it some ride. but I don't think today specifically he was just all out dominance no one can touch him sort of thing he left a little bit on the table for the Mariners to get some and it just didn't it didn't they didn't have any sort of answer for it it almost felt like yeah okay well we'll you know get through chase burns and then try and see what we can do with the reds bullpen without any sort of feeling that they can get to him specifically. So that's a little disappointing. We'll talk about the later game situations in the second half of the show. But just overall,

the Mariners lost this game because of their offense today. Too many key situations. Let's talk about quickly the seventh inning. Weston Wilson hits a homer, right? So good for him. he was finally the guy to hit that mistake pitch. So you're still able to kind of get yourself back into this game. But having him kind of get things going after Colt Emerson grounds out, and boy, we need to start talking about Colt Emerson because he looks a little bit lost at the plate. He doesn't look like a big league hitter right now.

It makes a couple good plays at shortstop, but he does not look like a big league hitter right now. Cole Young grounds out, Rosarano walks. Then they bring in Brock Burke for Antone, Canzone walks, Raleigh walks. So now you have bases loaded for Josh Naler. And this is just the epitome of Josh Nailer right now, guys. It's what, two pitches into the at bat, and he weakly grounds out to first base.

On a very hitable pitch, I just, I don't know, man. I don't know if he specifically is one of the most frustrating players for me this season. Yes, Cal is the most underperforming player for the Mariners this season. But Josh Nehler, when you watch him play, is so frustrating because he looks like he's so overly aggressive trying to either not strike out or to hit pitches early in at bats. And he just is flailing right now. It's just, it's one of the, like, he, he, used to be the guy that you trusted one of the most in clutch situations last year.

And now I almost want almost anyone else to be up there. It's rough. You don't have many other options. Obviously, you just paid the guy. And he's not great at first base right now either. It's a rough watch right now for Josh Naylor. He needs to figure out how to lift the baseball and to have a little more patience. I realize that walks aren't his thing.

he's usually a high average high contact guy that can hit you know 20 to 30 bombs but we need him to he's just he's killing too many rallies right now um with him having people on base in front of him and then just being way too ultra aggressive trying to hit anything that he can see whether it's at his eyes whether it's way down low so um that's my assessment on josh naler it's just You don't have any other options. And unfortunately, it's not really his makeup as a player to change that very much. So hopefully he can just find a way to lift the baseball a little bit. That's really the only difference between him this year and him last year.

So let's take a quick break. Let's come back. I want to discuss Julio not starting. I want to discuss the bullpen situation. Their winning streak ends at three games after winning two against the Giants in the first game against the red.

So the rubber match will be tomorrow. It looks like Emerson Hancock versus Brady Singer is the pitching matchup. But first, before we get to that, I want to talk a little bit about the late game situations. First of all, with Julio, A, great for him that he's healthy enough to come in and hit a home run. Like maybe him sitting on the bench with that sort of perspective changed something in him because he hits a hard ground ball in his first at bat when he comes in for Luke Rayleigh at like 110 miles an hour to L.A. Dela Cruz. But again, it was a mistake pitch.

He needs to elevate that. And of course he did in his second at bat. So he hits the home run, which is great. Makes it three to two. And when it's three to two, top of the ninth inning, Dan Wilson opts to go to Michael Rucker instead of a multitude of options. There's so many better name, literally any name in the bullpen

is a better name at that point. I mean, I just, this is where it's tough to really judge how much of it is him versus how much of it is Depoto slash Hollander slash just the Mariners strategy. I tend to just think it is a lot of Dan Wilson. Look, Michael Rucker coming in

and making it four to two instead of three to two is not the reason you lost this game today. But it shows that there is a miscommunication or just a misjudgment, at least, with what is a winning situation for this baseball team? Because Julio hits the home run to make it three to two in the eighth inning. And you have momentum. You feel like, okay, if you put, get any sort of traffic, if you can get through the ninth, the top of the ninth,

if you get any sort of traffic, you're putting a ton of pressure on a reds bullpen that hasn't been that great. Okay. So giving that up because you want to save arms, even after yesterday, you used Michael Rucker, Cole Wilcox, and Nick DeVila, I believe. Like, what are we doing? What are we doing?

There's no reason to save arms in that situation. There's plenty of guys available. I know Brash is still hurt, but, I mean, Spire, Bizarro. Like, maybe there's something that I'm missing in terms of availability, but I don't know, man. It just didn't seem like there was a lot of urgency there. And what's weird is, okay, if you think that situation is not enough to put in one of your higher leverage arms, you don't have to put in Andres Munoz, but higher leverage arms would be preferred. Then why are you subbing in Julio Rodriguez as after leaving him out for precautionary reasons, right?

So that's where there's a disconnect because on one hand, you're playing with urgency and you're bringing in a guy who supposedly can't start, but then he gets subbed on because you need to come back and win this game, which I like, and he helps you to do that for sure. But then on the other hand, once he does his job to make it closer, you put in a guy who is literally the least lowest leverage arm in your bullpen when it's three to two. I don't like that whatsoever.

There's just there, you can't have it both ways, right? You either have to go all in on the, hey, we'll play for tomorrow sort of thing. Julio, you'll get the full day tomorrow. And I'm not advocating for that. I'm just saying if you're going to do one, you should be doing the other one, right? Or you go all in on trying to come back in this game. And if you don't, that's okay. You have other arms.

Castillo went seven today. You used no high leverage arms yesterday. there's like very little risk involved with doing that. Not to mention Munoz once again has talked about how he is better when he doesn't have these large gaps in between his outings. So you could have used him in that situation. I just use, again, he's not the reason you lost this game today. This isn't as egregious as other situations. And I've seen a lot of worse from Dan Wilson.

but there needs to be some sort of, you know, what's the word I'm looking for? Cohesion strategy where it feels like every move is following that strategy. Not one is going one way and one is going the other way, right? So I don't know, man. It just that's one of those things where I feel like that could have easily been a situation where you throw in another shutdown inning and you can really put pressure on the Reds. get any sort of foot traffic and you're putting a ton of pressure on them to come back in this game. So unfortunately, it's a Julio Homer wasted, but good for him for coming on and hitting

it. So I assume he's healthy now. But him coming on does not match the urgency with putting Michael Rucker out there in the top of the ninth and a one-run game. So that's my grievance for today. A reminder for tomorrow, Ty and Colby will have your post-game content. due to it being a day game. Middle of the day, they'll just release their episode right after the game. So that'll be kind of your postgame content. I hate to come back and then leave you guys. But remember, that's just the normal schedule.
