Starting point is 00:00:03 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Oh, boy. Good to see the Toronto Blue Jays still own us, unfortunately. But yeah, man, that's just not good enough for the Mariners. This is a big series, and you've now secured the series loss, and you're trying to avoid a sweep tomorrow.
Starting point is 00:00:35 It's the second time you've gone up one zero. in these two games and failed to see out of victory. And even more egregious today because you went up 3-0. Just mistakes galore. Kate Anderson, look, we're seeing why it's such a big jump to go from AA into the major leagues. Not that he was awful by any stretch of the imaginations. But he was definitely, he's not as dominant. moment at this level and that's that's expected um you know his command's still good but he doesn't have
Starting point is 00:01:16 the um the efficiency to get through you know enough endings yet and especially when you have a kind of an 80 pitch cap on him and it should be that and i'm not arguing that that's a wrong thing to do at this point for him but yeah it's just um it puts you in a tough spot and uh bizardo just an awful mistake not only to walk. Honestly, there's multiple things with that inning. There's walking the nine-hole hitter, which is just can't do. That's probably the worst of the mistakes,
Starting point is 00:01:47 honestly, even more so than the wild pitch and failing to tag. Then you walk George Springer with the base is loaded, and then you cover home plate, but then you forget you have to tag the guy as well. So they score two runs on a double. So I don't want to hear anyone, when I advocate for walks versus singles,
Starting point is 00:02:05 people that say, oh, you can score two runs on a single and you can't on a walk. Well, I saw them score two runs on a walk today. We're going to start with the Star Wars. We'll talk, Kate Anderson, what he had going for him today, what he didn't. Offensively, the Mariners basically just had two guys doing anything today. A couple unsung moments and a big unsung hero. We'll kind of get to those a little bit later on the show.
Starting point is 00:02:33 But let's start with Kate Anderson. It's his second start in the major leagues. His first star was against the Cubs. Second star was against the Blue Jays. And yes, the Cubs at home is probably still a tougher assignment, considering how good of an offense they are this year. But the Blue Jays, yes, if you look at their numbers, they don't jump off the page offensively this year.
Starting point is 00:02:54 But you saw, with your own eyes today, that there's even the players that are struggling like Vlad Guerrero, the dude is smoking the baseball. when he hits a 116 mile an hour lineout to Randy and two pitches before that, he cranks one that's like just barely foul. It's not like he's completely lost at the play. He's not having a Cal Raleigh season. A lot of people compared the two.
Starting point is 00:03:18 They're not comparable. In terms of the overall season, I know Cal Raleigh hits the homer today and gets the walk and it gets the single as well. So Cal Rale, good to see him kind of turn things around a little bit. But overall in the season, while Guerrero's power has just been non-existent, he's at least been able to make contact and just hasn't gotten the ball in the air very much. That's really been the only thing. Cal Raleigh's just looked completely lost for the entirety of the season.
Starting point is 00:03:47 So all in that saying is that this lineup, while they are underperforming similar to the Mariners in the Blue Jays, they are still a good team. They have a lot of tough at-bats, Alejandro Kirk. Ernie Clement. Nathan Luke's yesterday had a really good day. Bateman who plays center field and right field for them. Good contact hitter. They have a lot of good, tough at bats that you can have a tough time with if you don't
Starting point is 00:04:16 have your A stuff as a pitcher. And I don't think Kate Anderson has really quite figured it out yet. Not saying he won't. Not saying that he's been bad, not even. He's been good. It's about what I expected, though, right? He's not going to come up and go seven innings of shutout baseball. He's not Paul schemes.
Starting point is 00:04:32 He's not going to come up and do that instantly. He showed, I think the biggest reason why he had so much success at the minor league level is because he's about as major league ready as a 22 or 23-year-old pitcher can be, right? And that's just, it's too much for those guys. So seeing him come up here and not struggle is a good thing. And, you know, get through four and a third today. probably still late on the hook. Dan Wilson was not as egregious as his first outing for sure,
Starting point is 00:05:10 because you would have liked to see him get through maybe five, and he felt pretty good about him against the bottom of the order, but letting him face the top of the order again in Bateman, it's the second time that's happened, right, where you're close to Kate Anderson's pitch limit, and he gets through the bottom of the order for the second. time, the full order for the second time. And for whatever reason, you leave him out there for the top of the order just because
Starting point is 00:05:38 it's a lefty, it's not smart, especially for a guy making his second major league start. So it should have been a quicker hook. It would have been a less stressful situation for Bizarro to come in, not giving him any excuses. He actually doesn't get tacked for either of the runs. but he is definitely a big part of the reason why the Mariners were in that situation. A couple big parts that could have made things a little bit different. We're talking bullpen now.
Starting point is 00:06:15 I mean, you just can't walk guys, right? Three walks for Kid Anderson, two for Bizarro, two for Ferrer, seven walks total by Mariners pitching today. compared to six strikeouts. That's just not what we're used to seeing with these guys. It's just not good enough. So, yeah, Ferreira wasn't able to get the job done either in the following inning, gives up the lead.
Starting point is 00:06:40 It's just everything comes crumbling apart. It feels like whenever the Mariners have something go wrong, a bunch of other things go wrong, right? Instead of with other teams, you can see one part of the team go wrong, but then another part of the team kind of pick them up, right? If your offense is struggling, but you get a dominant start and dominant relief pitching, you're able to get the win still or vice versa.
Starting point is 00:07:04 If you have a tough start, but your offense gets going, it feels like the Mariners either put it all together for one game or none, right? And it all kind of falls apart. And that's what I think has contributed to them being such a middling or even below middling team. They're not 64 and 72 on the season, guys. thankfully Houston is losing but I'm tired of relying on
Starting point is 00:07:31 other teams losing for the Mariners to get in the playoffs and it's August 29th it's almost September now so we're past the point of having to do that at this point but just mental mistakes too like obviously the bizardo ones the classic like A you walk the bases or you have two walks to load the bases because you came in with guys on base as well. And then you walk with the bases loaded to score a run.
Starting point is 00:07:59 And then it's a wild pitch, not even close, by the way, on a three-two count, like, what are you doing? It gets by Cal. You cover home play and then you forget that you need to tag the guy. Like, oh, wait, that's what I have to do. It's just, it's an encapsulation of what this season has been for the Mariners. And the players are to blame, the managers to blame. It goes all around. The leadership is to blame.
Starting point is 00:08:21 The roster construction is. to play all of it all of it it's all not good enough for the seattle mergers right now so um vargas comes in and actually does really well 2.1 innings uh 2 k's but just efficiency and he's going to be your multi-inning guy moving forward which i love him in that role so hopefully he's able to stay healthy we've missed him uh for the majority of this season we've had to really plug some holes uh if we were to have vargas it would have been a different story but uh here we are let's talk about the offense now um um Um, tough day for Randy, tough day for Dom, tough day for Julio.
Starting point is 00:08:58 Josh Naylor gets two hits, Cal gets two hits. And then Taylor Ward is the, the, the two RBI single in the fourth inning with the bases loaded. And that's really it, guys. Everyone else just can't do anything. Brock Rodden's not a major league player, unfortunately. He needs to not be on this team anymore. When you're kind of debating whether it should be him or Leo Rivas, that's telling you he's not a major league player. a great start. Don't get me wrong, but
Starting point is 00:09:24 he's at bats are atrocious and it's been consistently that way for at least a week now. Jay Mc Crawford gets the hit. You know, he's been playing okay at shortstop. You're going to have to live with him there moving forward. But man, do they need Brandon Donovan back ASAP? And oh, wait,
Starting point is 00:09:40 there was, it feels like there would have been a third basement available maybe on waivers or something that the Mariners are familiar with that it wouldn't cost you anything to get besides paying him, what his contract is. But the name's slipping me for this moment. But anyways, Cole Young also really cooled down in the last month or so.
Starting point is 00:10:03 He now is a below 700 OPS. He had a great start to the season and kind of a good middle of the season as well. But now under 700, man, it's just, it's, it's a tough watch for most of this offense. Really, besides Cal's finally starting to figure it out a little bit. He gets the two hits and the walk. strikes out in a big moment though in what was it the sixth inning I want to say it's just
Starting point is 00:10:27 yeah it's not good enough guys I mean and there needs to be some sort of lineup shakeup because there's no way Julio should be hit in third he's not a top three hitter on this team right now it's sad to see
Starting point is 00:10:41 we've had the Julio discussion a couple times recently I don't want to have it all the way again it sucks he is a 712 OPS I mean that's just not good enough man at this point the season. We never got the hot Julio. In fact, we've gotten a worse Julio in the second half of the season than what he was in the first half, which is a highly unfortunate.
Starting point is 00:11:02 Taylor Ward, two out RBI, which is fine, but three K's after that. It's just not what you expected when he traded for him. So let's take a quick break. We'll come back. We'll discuss our unsung moment and unsung hero, two parts of the game, which I think can fly under the radar a little bit, both in a positive way. But the Mariners lose this one, four to three against the Blue Jays. They lose the series. They now are, I think there's still three games back of the Houston Astros at the top of, the four and a half, excuse me.
Starting point is 00:11:36 I didn't know where the three games came from. But it's just, it's getting late. It's getting late. And there's not a ton of hope left. This was a big series for the Mariners. If they were to kind of come through, then you could really put together a good. good final month, but you're going to put yourself in an even bigger hole now.
Starting point is 00:11:53 So we'll come back. We'll discuss unsung part of the show here on the Mariners Postcast after a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. Mariners will lose this one four to three of the Blue Jays. They're still third in the AOS, 64 and 72 on the season, and they're running out of games to get themselves back into this one. apologies for missing yesterday's episode.
Starting point is 00:15:24 It's just, it's tough with a six-month-old amount about. My wife has her schedule as well. So I apologies for missing you guys on that one. But I'm here today. And it's just, it's a series loss versus the Blue Jays, no matter what happens tomorrow. So hopefully you can at least salvage it, but we'll see it ends up happening.
Starting point is 00:15:43 They won't be doing that playing the way they are right now. And the unfortunate thing, excuse me, The unfortunate thing here for the Mariners is you're looking across the diamond at another team that has severely struggled this year compared to expectations, even more so than the Mariners. And you're actually seeing some desperation. You're seeing some almost not must win, but a playoff like vibe with the Toronto Blue Jays where they feel like they need to get back on the horse. And you're not seeing it from this Mariners team. And it's extremely frustrating that it just continues. to happen. You keep thinking you have these moments where they'll wake up and figure it out that
Starting point is 00:16:22 this is not good enough, but they keep falling back into the same habits. And unfortunately, it's a representation, not just of the players, but not just of the manager even, I think, but the entire kind of organization at this point in time. I blame most of it on the manager, but it's not all of it for sure, because, I mean, he's got to have his guys ready to play, but the players also themselves need to, you know, check yourself at the door, right? Let's, let's, you should have some sort of self-evaluation process here. That's not good enough. But there's not coaching involved either.
Starting point is 00:17:00 You're seeing the same approach now, as you saw three months ago. For a lot of the players that are struggling, too, like Julio, it's just, where's the coaching? Where, where's the improvement? Where's the player development at the major league level? It's not there right now. So, unsung, hero of the game. not I wear, Brizardo,
Starting point is 00:17:19 Carlos Vargas, comes in for Jose Ferrear after Bizarardo kind of coughed things up and Ferreira coughed him up even more. Vargas goes two and a third and really saves having to burn any more arms, which, I mean, it sucks that that's what we're really taking the silver linings of
Starting point is 00:17:38 from this game instead of a win and taking your team to a victory. That's unfortunately not the case today. So we have to look at things like, hey, we saved bullpen arms on August 29th, 2026, as we're what, 64 and 72 on the season. But hey, that's a positive. An unsung moment in the game, if the Mariners were to come out with the victory today, I believe it was the fourth inning.
Starting point is 00:18:06 Let me double check here as I'm looking. Yes, it was the fourth inning. The Mariners are up 3-0. Looks like they're kind of cruising along. Kate Anderson really starts to hit the bumps a little bit. This is another reason why it was pretty frustrating. Not seeing the quick hook from him from Dan Wilson once again is the inning before he gets out of it, but he was still kind of looking to struggle.
Starting point is 00:18:31 You have a George Springer double on Okamoto walk. And then McAdoo flies out. But then Ernie Clement hits a pop-up into just behind first base between. Josh Naylor and Dom Canzon in right field. And Josh Naylor makes an outstanding catch, kind of Willie Mays-esque walking in. And it would have been a fair ball. This is not something that you can just let drop and live to buy another pitch.
Starting point is 00:19:01 That was a fantastic catch by Josh Naylor. Canzone was nowhere near it, so it's not like he was going to save him from it either. He needed to make that play. And if the Mariners had come out with a, you know, a 3-1 victory or something like that today, that would have been a huge point in this game because that's, that's a moment where they could have scored even more runs if Josh Naylor doesn't make that play. So unsung hero, Vargas, unsung moment, Josh Naylor with that catch. But unfortunately, it comes into a mariner loss, 4 to 3 against the Blue Jays.
Starting point is 00:19:27 They're 64 and 72 on the season. And it's just, like I said, they're running out of time. They're really running out of time. And the urgency is just continuously lacking. We'll talk to you after the game tomorrow, guys. I believe it's like a 1037 first pitch. Of course, being on the East Coast. Yes, it is. 1037 first pitch.
Starting point is 00:19:48 It's just, it's just, the Mariners need to win this game. I don't care that you've already lost the series. It's just not good enough to continuously punt games. That's why the third game against the Cubs was frustrating. It's just, it's, it's too late in the season to be doing this stuff, guys. Logan Gilbert's on the mound versus Max Scherzer. Tomorrow, Max Scherzer's had a rough year. So hopefully they can only get to him.
Starting point is 00:20:14 But I don't know, man. It's tough watch right now for the Mariners. We'll be with you after the game tomorrow. Let's wake up, please. Go, Mariner.
