Starting point is 00:00:04 This is the Mariners Postcast. Your instant game reaction for the Seattle Mariners. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Man, I swear every time Chris Crawford leaves me these games to go solo, it's some of the worst baseball Mariners end up playing. Just off the top of my head, the four-game series Ender in Houston with the walk-off to Christian Walker was the other one and just some other bad baseball games.
Starting point is 00:00:38 But here I am. Ryan Solo today in the Mariners Postcast. My name is Anderson Hurst. Chris Crawford taking the day off today, has some other stuff to attend. Should be back with us tomorrow. So hopefully we get some better vibes when he rejoins the broadcast. But yeah, just a tough one for the Mariners.
Starting point is 00:00:56 They end up splitting the series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Today, man, if you had everything kind of the recipe for success yesterday with good starting pitching, good relief pitching, and your stars showing up. You had the opposite of that today because you had Logan Gilbert, who looked really good through four innings, really looked really elite through three innings. Fourth inning was a little shaky, but he got through it. And then the fifth inning, man, just an absolute implosion from him. We'll talk about that when we start with the start. offense gets absolutely dominated by the ghost that is Kyle Hendricks.
Starting point is 00:01:34 I just, I don't know, man, six innings on 66 innings pitch, or 66 pitches. That's crazy. At least you get Cal Raleigh with his 41st of the season. But everything else just looked pathetic today. And it sucks. It really does because this is a big opportunity for the Seattle Mariners as they had a chance to gain three games this weekend on the Houston. Astros and they only end up gaining two.
Starting point is 00:02:03 Houston gets swept by the A's in their home ballpark in a four-game series. The Mariners, this was just with the door wide open. It was a missed opportunity. You still gain two, I guess, but still not what you want. And don't look now, but the Texas Rangers are hot. They have won six in a row and nine of their last 10, including a sweep this weekend. So, yeah, you're not just fighting off. the Astros are trying to catch the Astros.
Starting point is 00:02:33 Now you're trying to fight off the Rangers for that wild card spot as well. So it's going to get tight here. It's going to get tight. The Rangers are now tied with the Mariners and record. So I think the Mariners have the tiebreaker though. So I think that's, we still technically have the wild card position. But it's not going to be that way for much longer if they continue to play this hot. So, yeah, lots of big, lots of big games coming up for the Seattle Mariners.
Starting point is 00:02:58 let's start with the start with Logan Gilbert, man. Because you could talk about how bad the offense was today, because it was. It was very bad. But even when you go through these stretches, if you were to ask me at this point in the season, right, and the Mariners are still in a playoff spot at this point in time, so it's not like their complete underperformance or anything like that. If you were to ask me what part of the baseball team is performing below expectations or standards, significantly below. I wouldn't say the bullpen.
Starting point is 00:03:37 I wouldn't say the offense. I think the offense overall, I mean, they have bad games like today. But the offense overall, I think the aggregate of everything has actually been better than a lot of people expected, especially with Josh Naylor now in the lineup and hopefully one more addition. but it's been the starting pitching specifically Logan Gilbert and George Kirby and you can throw Bryce Miller in there as well when he's healthy because these guys are top 10 starting pitchers in baseball when they're right and you know we talked about it yesterday with George Kirby he doesn't look the same he still get he's effective most of the time but you this is just a classic 2025 Logan Gilbert start man he looks.
Starting point is 00:04:23 looks excellent, like as good as he's ever looked, 2024 looks like for the first three innings. And then he has one bad ending, whether that's in the first inning, whether that's in the fifth inning, like today. It's just, it's an implosion. And I know there's some umpire questions. I really do. The first battered Travis Darneau of that inning, Logan Gilbert strikes him out twice. He does. It should have been one out, nobody on except, you know, he walks him. But then anything after that's all Logan Gilbert, man. You've got to, like, re-center yourself and get through that inning. He had a couple wild pitches, a couple walks. I think at one point he had five straight, three ball counts to the bottom of the Angels lineup, which is just not what you expect from
Starting point is 00:05:09 the guy that I called last time that he had a start. It was your ace. And I just don't know if I can say that right now. So it's something that needs to be fixed. If this team wants to make any sort of noise and I like every direction every thing that I'm hearing is telling me that the mariners are trying to be aggressive for this year for this year 2025 to go and try and win the world series uh if that's going to happen you need logan yield over to george kirby to be who they are uh because they haven't been 100% of themselves up until this point uh but like i said it looked really good uh through the first three innings the first four innings really was getting a splitter to work really well, locating the slider, pumping fastballs, 96, 97.
Starting point is 00:05:55 It looks like he was just cruising to another good start. Both him and Kyle Hendricks were dealing through the first, you know, I think they all both went up, nine up, nine down in the first three innings. So that's something that was positive, but let's go straight to the fifth inning because that's something where I, it's, we've seen it too much from Logan Gilbert this year to the point where I'm going to start to ask, and I'm a little, I can't wait to ask Chris Crawford this question because I want to know, like, I know he's kind of bullish on Gilbert. He thinks there's more positives coming out of his recent starts than negatives. But it just seems like this
Starting point is 00:06:34 start that we had today has happened too many times. You get the Travis Darnell walk. Like I said, he should have struck it. It should be one out, nobody on, almost like, let's continue to go as you have until this point. Then he gets a while. wild pitch gets darned a second walks louis renhifo and then you hit gustavo campero when he's trying to want or trying to bunt excuse me uh just looking wild can't locate a slider out of nowhere uh Kevin Newman grounds out to JP uh they score on that one run um no double play ends up happening Logan gilbert throws another wild pitch and that scores Luis ren hefo Zach netto flies out for the second out and then the big one Mike Trout with his home run, just absolutely piped that one.
Starting point is 00:07:23 It was one of the farthest home runs that I've seen hit against a Mariners pitcher this season. For his 1,000th RBI, dudes just as we sidestep for just a second, he's so good. He's just so good. The last three years have been tough to watch as someone who likes the game of baseball. When Mike Trout is right, he is so dang good. Nolan, Sean, O'all doubles after that. and then he finally gets Taylor Ward to strike out. Kind of a weird inning because on that Nolan Shanuel double,
Starting point is 00:07:53 it was like a bloop to mid-left field down the line, but it's Ben Williamson going for it. Randy doesn't even come to help him out. It was just a really weird inning. But at the end of the day, I feel, I don't know if that non-strike three call to Travis Darnow really affected Loken Gilbert, but it seemed like it did because up until that point,
Starting point is 00:08:13 he felt like he was in command of his stuff. He felt like he could get his stuff by the Angels hitters. And then all of a sudden it just imploded in that fifth inning. And it's something we can't really have. I don't know. I just, I really don't know. And a lot of people are asking maybe you go to a reliever at that point. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:33 But if Logan had looked like he was struggling up until that point, maybe getting a little lucky with the BAPIP, like, yeah, I could understand a quicker hook. in that situation, but he was dominant through three innings and at least good through in the fourth inning and then just all of a sudden implodes. And you, like, at the end of the day, you need your starter to go at least five. You need, six is kind of a bare minimum ask, especially from a guy like Logan Gilbert who has done that. And this is just, it's been his issue this year.
Starting point is 00:09:06 He gets a ton of strikeouts early in the game, but then can't get the length because one bad inning later in his outing ends up kind of. of ruining everything and that's exactly what happened today. It's a missed opportunity for the Mariners because like I said, you got Houston. They get swept at home by the A's. It's just a huge door open for the Mariners to take three games added to the Houston Astros, but you end up only taking two, not the absolute end of the world. And I know it feels like a series loss and the Mariners split two to two, but this feels
Starting point is 00:09:45 like a series lost because you should be winning this series. You should be winning three or four against a bad Angels baseball team. Let's quickly give some love to our sponsors for today. Once again, Anderson Hirstry. I'm going solo. Chris Crawford's just taking the day off. We'll hopefully have him back tomorrow with some better vibes. Like I said, he always leaves me these crappy games. I don't know what it is about. Maybe I need to leave him some of them. So we can kind of even it out in a little bit. But we will, oh, oh, all right. She is. Hi, guys.
Starting point is 00:10:17 What's up, dude? I thought you were taking the day off. I am. I just wanted to stop in and say hi real quick. Are you listening? I didn't get a chance to listen. I just got in my car and, you know, I decided to suggest. Everyone say hi, hi, Chris.
Starting point is 00:10:31 Hi, chat. So hi, hi to Chris. This is the best news I've seen all day after that crappy game. It really wasn't very good, was it? No. I was joking with, like, the chat, like, it seems like whenever you leave me, it's with these terrible games. Yeah, I was just thinking about this, too, Anders, is that the last time we saw Dan Wilson get angry before the game before was that game against the Astros, where he was actually wrong.
Starting point is 00:10:58 Yeah, it was the strike three to Randy, and Randy wasn't even arguing it. Dan Wilson comes out and gets talks and like, what's going on here? Yeah, that was a weird one. So I'm sure you've talked about it. I'm just going to give my quick thoughts, right? Yeah, go ahead. four innings of Logan Gilbert was fantastic. One inning of Logan Gilbert was horrific umpiring and also just a complete meltdown,
Starting point is 00:11:22 a complete meltdown. And it can't happen, right? If you are the top of the rotation starter, yeah, it hurts, you know, there's self-inflicted damage that wasn't actually self-inflicted. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:33 But then you fall apart, right? And it clearly got to him. It clearly got to him in that fifth inning. And I want better than that, right? Like, as good as he was over those first four in.
Starting point is 00:11:43 it doesn't matter as much when you completely fall apart, completely fall apart after. And I'm surprised by it because Logan Gilbert's not somebody that I think of as a guy who can't handle pressure or, you know, the moment gets too big. But today he kind of lost his cool. Today he lost his cool. He got, he did. He got rattled.
Starting point is 00:12:02 It's the perfect way to put it. He got rattled and he's just got to be better. He's just got to be better. Very cool to see even in a game where they are harassed. Riffick offensively, big dumper get 41, right? Like, that's your offensive highlight. I know Julio hit a couple of balls hard. There were some balls to the warning track that I thought maybe could have been, you know.
Starting point is 00:12:26 Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, but still, it's Kyle Hendricks, man. Like, like, you got to score runs off Kyle Hendricks. It's just not, it's not good. And ultimately, the series is a disappointment, right? Like, there were two, two really encouraging games, but then two games that just kind of STB'd, right? Like, it just not good enough.
Starting point is 00:12:48 And it puts a lot of pressure, I think, on this Oakland series, right? Like, you've got to do well. And also, I think, or I hope anyway, that DePoto, Hollander and company watch that game and said, oh, yep, we're not done. We can't be done, man. We cannot be done in terms of improving the offense and also, you know, just improving the offense. Just improving the offense because it's not like you're replacing Logan Gilbert or anything like that. Like if the Mariners are going to do what they want to do this season,
Starting point is 00:13:20 I mentioned this right before you hopped in, I want to hear your thoughts on this. If the marriage are going to do what they want to do this season and, you know, challenge for a division title, make a playoff run, all that stuff. I think the biggest thing that needs to change is Logan Gilbert and George Kirby. They need to be who they are. Because of right now, like this is just a classic 2025 Logan Gilbert start for me, where he looks great. Like his stuff looks as good as it has in his entire career for three, four
Starting point is 00:13:47 innings. And then it just blows up. It blows up. That's how he's not getting the length. We talked a little bit, George Kirby yesterday. Like it looked fine in a different way. But then sometimes he's not like you need your starting pitching to be nails,
Starting point is 00:14:01 especially when you have Bryce Miller out. Yeah, yeah. I think that's fair. I mean, you know, I don't want to go too harsh because we did see Gilbert's the last two starts before that looked. dominant, right? But like, at the same time, like, four, five innings of four run baseball, it doesn't really matter how you get it, right? It's five innings of four run baseball,
Starting point is 00:14:19 and you need better than that. Sometimes you look at ERA and you think five innings of four run baseball, that's not great. That's not great. You do that every game. That's a seven point two ERA, right? You're out of baseball if you have a seven point two ERA, unless you're Sandy Alcantara and everybody wants to trade for you. Seven point two ERA. Actually, wouldn't mind Sandy Alcantara by and team, Seattle, by the way. I would take it like in the very last back end starter. But yeah, I would agree with that. Like the pitching has to be more consistent.
Starting point is 00:14:49 We see flashes of brilliance and more than flashes, right? Like we see, but it's got to be that 2024 staff. It's got to be that 2024 staff, not just to make the postseason, but to be a team that contends for something bigger, right? Contends for something bigger. So go get A. O'Henio Suarez. Go get Danny Colombe to help this bullpen. Good.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Nice shot by the bullpen tonight, by the way. Legamina. Legamina looked great, and it was awesome to see. And I forget who pitched the ninth or the eighth, but I'm sorry. Jackson Coar, who I totally forgot was on the Mariners. But great to see him get a shutdown inning as well. Keep the offense in it. But they just didn't have it.
Starting point is 00:15:34 All right. Be good to Anders. Be wonderful to Anders. Anders is the very best. No, I'm putting you 1A and I'm going to put me 1B. That's just the way it's going to go. It's hot. It's really, really hot.
Starting point is 00:15:50 And I'm tired of the heat. I'm tired of watching the Seattle Mariners not score enough run. I love you all. I'm going to try to exit out of this thing now. Okay. Well, thank. Really appreciate Chris Crawford hopping in to today's stream. It was awesome to have him just kind of quickly give his thoughts.
Starting point is 00:16:08 I like exactly what he said about, you know, it hasn't necessarily been huge blowups from your starting pitching, but you expect better from these guys. All right. Let's give a quick shout out to our sponsors for today, and then we'll get a little bit more into the offense and our unsung hero. Today's episode is brought to you by Game Day Hugh, and so is this hat that I'm wearing. It is a Seattle Mariners hat, but it's kind of a different color one. For fans like me, this one hits the mark. Game Day Hugh makes clean, no logo gear with team-inspired colorways for every pro and college fan base. It's all about letting your colors speak for you.
Starting point is 00:16:48 No giant logos, just smart, versatile style that works on Game Day on the course or anywhere in between. Yeah, I kind of, I'm a minimalist guy. You know, when you do get some Mariners gear or maybe throw in some cracking gear, stuff like that. I like just kind of a small logo with the good colorway, and that's where Game Day Hugh is just perfect. I play a lot of golf, so having just the giant logos don't work in that sort of environment. So if you're looking for something that you can still rep your team and you're going for a certain color way in some way, Game Day Hughes is the way to go. Right now you can get 15% off with code MLB15 at gamedayhue.com.
Starting point is 00:17:28 That's game day hue.com. The code even stacks on bundle deals. Hello. So now's the time to load up. Let your colors talk because colors. Speak louder than words. That's game day, game day hue.com code MLB-50. Ever wish you're managing money felt easier. I do. With Monarch money, it can. Whether you're growing your savings or planning a big purchase, Monarch puts you in the driver's seat. It's
Starting point is 00:17:56 like having your own personal CFO, giving you full visibility and control over your finances. Monarch money is more than a budgeting app. It's a complete financial command center. You can track all your accounts, investments, and spending in one place. So in addition to managing your money, you're also building wealth. As someone who doesn't really follow investment banking or stock markets or anything like that, Monarch money is perfect for me because I just, I use them and have them kind of tell me what the best thing to do with this specific amount of money is. And they kind of break it up in a way. Helps me spend less on things that I really, really shouldn't be spending on. And then they help me kind of grow what money that I am making to make it a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:18:41 So take control of your finances with Monarch Money. Use code locked on MLB at Monarchmoney.com for 50% off your first year. That's monarchmoney.com code locked on MLB for half off your first year. All right, really quick on the offense. Yeah, just bad. You can't have Kyle Hendricks dominate you like that. Six innings gets through with 66 pitches. And then, of course, Cal comes in the seventh inning and hits the.
Starting point is 00:19:10 Homer and he's out of there, a quick hook there from the Angels. And then after that, it was nothing. You got, I think, two hits today, if I'm looking at the box score correctly. Yeah, two hits, the Cal Raleigh home run and the Josh Nailer single. So, and not a lot of walks either because, you know, it's weird with Kyle Hendrix. They talked about a little bit on the broadcast today. A guy that doesn't walk a lot, but also doesn't strike out a lot. He's going to pitch to contact.
Starting point is 00:19:37 He's going to try and kind of fool you with, you know, A lot of changeups, especially to left-handed batters. He throws like 88 for his fastball, but when you're comparing that to his 80-mile-an-hour change-up, and he throws that more often than not, it's going to be tough to kind of tie him up and stuff like that. And the Mariners rough balance all day to day. It's just, to me, it's a bad matchup because I think the Mariners do well
Starting point is 00:20:00 against those kind of dominant stuff pitchers. We've seen that with the Terek Skubles, excuse me, the Paul Skeen's, you know, and all the way down the list, where you can kind of be a little more patient and zone in on one spot. Hendricks is going to do so well hitting his spots that you're not really going to get those. So you kind of just have to be aggressive. And because he doesn't have that good of stuff, you can kind of tee off on him a little bit. But when he gets you off balance like he was doing today, you're going to hit him some quick outs.
Starting point is 00:20:30 And that's exactly what happens. So it's a bad matchup, yes, but you can't be just getting absolutely dominated by Kyle Hendricks like the Mariners did today. And he outpitched Logan Gilbert. So that's not a great look for either side of the ball. Like I said, missed opportunity because Houston, you know, gets swept at home. Texas has won nine of ten, including six in a row. So you have two ways. You're trying to catch this team that's slowing down a little bit.
Starting point is 00:21:00 And this hot team behind you is really picking it up. And now they're not even behind you. They're even with you on record. So unsung hero, let's do. I'm going to go Casey Legamina. I kind of mentioned it with Chris there. Just he looked good. It's weird because I swear like every three or three out of every four outings with Casey Legamana,
Starting point is 00:21:22 it seems like he just looks great. He can dominate the zone, get soft contact and every now and then he'll get a swing and miss as well. And then there's one outing where you need him to just get through one inning and just get through it and he blows up. So he looked really good today though. And especially going two innings, really, really help the Mariners out, kind of saved their bullpen for the A series. You've got to take that series now.
Starting point is 00:21:44 That begins tomorrow, I believe. Let me make sure. And I'll give you your probable pitchers here in just a second. Yeah, you just got to win that. Unfortunately, with the Angels series now, you just got to win that series. And unfortunately, they only get two out of four. So the series tomorrow, yes, it is. release castillo and j p sears on the mound hopefully castillo who's been pretty consistent lately
Starting point is 00:22:13 gets uh exactly what you ordered from so uh anything else to the comments just let me know uh really appreciate you guys hanging out with us even on a bad day like today congratulations to each you're up for going in the hall of fame his speech was awesome if you if you were watching the game while that was going on kind of a weird situation as a mariners fan please go check it out there's there i think there's a video on youtube for the full speech and it's great uh he's hilarious by the way um It's so great to see him be able to kind of connect a little bit more with the fan base since he did it in English. So good for him and congratulations to him. But the Mariners dropped this one.
Starting point is 00:22:51 And yeah, split 2 of 4 against the Los Angeles Angels with Texas kind of hounding you down right now. That will be it for me. Really appreciate you guys hanging out with us. Please join Chris and myself tomorrow for the A's opener. we'll be with you. I think that's a 640 first pitch. It's a 7.05, excuse me, at Sacramento. It's going to be a lot of offense, I think, in that series, because that part does not hold a lot of baseballs. We'll talk to you guys then. Really appreciate you guys hanging out with me today. Thank you for Chris for stopping by. I really appreciate it. And we'll talk to you guys tomorrow.
